Mine-to-mill studies have previously demonstrated downstream productivity benefits from relatively modest increases in blast energy, or powder factor. These increases have up to now been limited by safety and environmental constraints, since excessive blast energy can result in flyrock, unacceptable vibration, airblast and wall damage.Here, a new blasting method that overcomes these constraints is presented. For the first time it is possible to employ powder factors that are several fold higher than conventional blasting. Independent modelling has shown that such powder factors can potentially increase mill throughput by 20 to 40 per cent. The economic implications are substantial, both in terms of increasing production in existing operations and in consideration of capital and plant requirements for greenfield sites. In addition, mill electricity and grinding media consumption and their associated costs and energy and emissions penalties can be reduced.This method represents a step-change in blasting practices. It involves a novel design utilising dual blast layers within a single blast event, all initiated with state-of-the art electronic blasting systems. The energies in the lower layer can be as high as five times the standard energies, providing for intense fragmentation of the ore. Results from blast models have been confirmed in field trials of the method.Open cut gold mining, in particular, stands to benefit from this method. As gold grades decline, milling costs and throughput increasingly become constraints on production that can be alleviated with this new method. Additionally, it opens possibilities for improved recovery. Blast modelling studies show that dilution of gold ore within the blast can be managed with the new method. Furthermore, it has been shown that vibration from the new method is actually lower than from conventional blasting, allowing the use of the technique in proximity to mine highwalls and other key infrastructure such as underground orepasses.It is concluded that this new method could substantially increase gold mine production and profitability while reducing overall energy consumption and associated emissions.CITATION:Brent, G F, Dare-Bryan, P, Hawke, S and Rothery, M, 2013. "A survey of 281 mineral exploration agreements examines the ratios among three ways that may be used to purchase an interest in a mineral property, viz: pay cash, pay shares and make future expenditures on the property.The dollar value of the future expenditures exceeds that of cash or shares by about nine times in most of the 110 agreements that contain cash-expenditure or share-expenditure components. Results suggest that cash and shares are treated about the same in terms of value.Buyers and sellers have opposing priorities for the way that they prefer to purchase a mineral property. These opposing priorities should give rise to a perceived 50:50 balance between cash/share payment and future expenditures to satisfy the idealized situation described by most definitions of fair market value (FMV). This balance between cash/share payments and future expenditures appears to be rationalized in negotiations to a FMV when expenditures are nine times greater than cash and/or payments.On this basis, it is proposed that the FMV of a property may be determined by aggregating the dollar amount of the cash/share payments plus one-ninth the dollar value of future expenditures, as set forth in the respective purchase agreement, and proportionately applying such aggregate to full property value."

Powder metallurgy processing of commercial Raney nickel powders was examined. The typical angular particle shape, in conjuction with aluminum present in a eutectic phase, facilitated interlocking leading to excellent green strength after compaction. Density and porosity as influenced by the compacting pressure were studied over the range of 37.5 to 207 meganewton per square meter (MN/m2). Sintering in an inert atmosphere from 575° to 850° C caused a volume increase which is attributed to a solid state reaction between Al and Ni2Al3 phases. The reaction is 3Al + Ni2Al3 ? 2NiA13. A thermal pretreatment of 70 hours at 700° C was required to prevent this reaction from occurring during sintering. Density and porosity as a function of compacting pressure and sintering temperature were determined after a thermal pretreatment of the powder.

The extraction of groundwater to produce gas from coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs has highlighted the opportunity for beneficial uses of groundwater in Australia. This paper presents an assessment of alternate groundwater modelling approaches that can be used for assessment of one beneficial use option, that of injection. This assessment examines the outcome of the use of different simulation methods on predictions of hydrodynamic behaviour.In this paper, a simplified hydraulic concept of a multi-aquifer system within the hypothetical injection field was used to investigate the hydrodynamic behaviour of injection into the Precipice Sandstone. Comparisons were made through the analysis of a Theis 3D analytical solution with 2D and 3D numerical solutions. The paper discusses the different solution methods and the impact of these on predictions of pressure and flux. Differences in 2D and 3D solutions result in implications if planning injection as a beneficial use of water. For example, the 2D solution resulted in faster and higher injection pressure build-up when compared to the 3D solutions. The 2D modelling could result in either plans that require higher capital expenditure for a greater number of wells in order to spread the pressure effect and remain below the maximum injection pressure or a reduced injection rate. Meanwhile, the 3D modelling with sensitivity analysis could result in planning for lower capital expenditure for fewer wells required to spread the pressure effect and remain below the maximum injection pressure. Continuous experimentation utilizing a 3- by 36 - foot rotary kiln was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of simultaneous induration and reduction of magnetic taconite concentrate . Lignite , or lignite - anthracite mixtures , and green magnetite pellets (64.2 percent Fe , dry basis ) were heated in a rotary kiln to about 2,100 ° F. After separation from excess reductant , the product pellets were found to be highly reduced and acceptably hard . A total of 140 tons of prereduced pellets with an average Fe content of 79.0 percent was produced at Minneapolis and smelted in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace at Bruceton , Pa . Two additional supplies of prereduced pellets were obtained from The Steel Company of Canada , Ltd. , Hamilton , Ontario , which contained 83.8 and 91.3 percent Fe , respectively . Smelting of prereduced pellets was compared with that of unreduced pellets obtained from The Hilton Mines , Shawville , Quebec , and from the Erie Mining Co. , Hoyt Lakes , Minn . Blast furnace tests established that a substantial decrease in coke rates and higher production result from the use of prereduced pellets .

"Water is increasingly being recognised as a material business risk that many companies are still not well-equipped to deal with. Despite a raft of water-risk focused initiatives, methodologies and guidelines, the challenge of managing the strong link between the technical and operational water issues, along with the growing external challenges and interests in water, remain a significant risk to a companyÆs ability to deliver value.This paper provides an overview of the key lessons learnt from ERMÆs experience of working with companies across a range of water sensitive industry sectors, in particular, the mining and oil and gas sectors, to develop and implement practical approaches to manage business critical water risk. These examples highlight the importance of managing water risk by linking technical and operational aspects of water management - with the longer term strategic and social license aspects. Four key ingredients were identified that are central to providing companies with a leading edge in the successful mitigation of water risk: understanding and evaluating water risk including the technical and operational aspects of water management, plus the longer term strategic and social aspects articulating a strong business case that prioritises water risks and their financial exposure to the organisation constructing a clear roadmap that practically links the water strategy objectives with on-the-ground implementation and action building capacity in the organisation to manage, engage and coordinate on water to mitigate risk.CITATION:Ringwood, K and Tang, A, 2013. Renewable energy, in the form of wind and solar, has emerged as main source of energy in the modern society. The wind industry has substantially grown over the last two decades to become a key player in providing energy to public. Wind turbines are getting larger, taller, and more efficient every year. The foundation is a major component of the wind turbine system. The wind turbine foundation must provide short and long-term stability for the overall turbine to allow continuous and safe turbine operation for energy production. The turbine serviceability and stability requirements must be geotechnically and structurally satisfied. In North America, major foundation types currently utilized in the wind industry include gravity spread foundation, mono pier foundation, and pile foundation. In this case study, a Post Tensioned Pile Cap (PTPC) foundation was used to support a 3.15-3.4 Megawatt turbine with 125M Rotor supported on 87.5M-hub-height tower. Soil anchors in the form of Auger-Pressure-Grouted-Displacement (APGD) piles and Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles were utilized. Four distinct subsoil conditions were identified, and for which four pile designs were adapted. Due to the occasional encounter of stronger soils at 50 to 55 feet (15.2 to 16.7 m), shorter pile design was preferred. To satisfy the design uplift load, pile post grouting were utilized to increase the shaft capacity of the piles. In this paper, the pre-production pile load test program will be described. The pile load test procedure, analysis, and results will be presented. A discussion will be provided, which led to the selection of the optimum pile design to support the high tension loads taking into consideration pile length limitations.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 256 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 17 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1977 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Nineteen previous publications have presented the results of 11,317 gas analyses prior to 1977. The first three, Bulletins 486,4 576,5 and 617,6 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other 16

In view of the current interest in the constituents of low-temperature tar, the Synthesis of three known xylenols and their hydroxyacetic acid derivatives has been undertaken by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. One of these xylenols, the 1,3,2 derivative first reported by Steinkopf and Höpner,4 has been described by Brown and Branting.5 The other two derivatives, the 1,3,5 first reported by Schütz6 and the 1,2,3 reported by Steinkopf and Höpner, have now been studied in greater detail. In the present work the synthesis of 1,2,3-xylenol and 1,3,5-xylenol was repeated, with some improvements in the former. The hydroxyacetic acid derivatives were also prepared, and it was found that while the melting point of the 1,2,3 derivative agreed with that of Steinkopf and Höpner. that of the 1,3,5 derivative was found to be 111° instead of 85 to 86° as reported by Schütz, by Steinkopf, and later by Bruckner. The discrepancy between the melting-point figures is doubtless due to differences in the purity of the xylenols used in the synthesis of the acids. Schütz obtained his 1,3,5 acid by recrystallizing an impure sample obtained from a mixture of xylenols. The difficulty of obtaining a pure acid by starting with a mixture is demonstrated by Bruckner, who despite painstaking efforts was unable to obtain the pure 162.5° melting 1,2,4 isomer from a mixture that persistently melted at 138° C. Steinkopf did not repeat Schütz's work but merely used the latter's figures in compiling a table. Bruckner, on the other hand. apparently also made the acid (by an improved method), and it is difficult to explain his checking Schütz's figure, unless it is that he, too used a symmetrical xylenol obtained from a tar and not prepared synthetically, as was the one reported in this paper.

On January 1, 1959, the United States had 313 petroleum refineries with a total installed crude-oil throughput capacity of 9,819,846 barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines annual survey. Compared with a year ago, this represents a net decreased of five in the number of slants mild a net increase in capacity of 412,139 barrels per day. The continued increase in total capacity and decrease in number of plants raised the average capacity of a refinery to a new high of 31,373 barrels per day. During 1958 total capacity increased in every refining district except the Louisiana Gulf district, which showed a 2-percent decrease due mainly to the retirement of the American Oil Company's plant at Destrehan, La. The largest increase, 14 percent, occurred in the Texas Inland district followed by a 12-percent increase in the Arkansas-Louisiana Inland district. At the beginning of 1959 the industry was building facilities that would add 108,400 barrels per day to crude-oil capacity. It also had under construction a capacity of 226,100 barrels per day as replacement. On January 1, 1959, no new refineries were under construction.

Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company, located in a semi-arid climate in Arizona, continually struggles with a water problem. This applies to quality as well as quantity. When the EPA considered installing a new centralized sewage plant to handle the combined waste from the municipalities of Globe and Miami, Arizona, they automatically assumed that He could use the sewage effluent for process water in flotation. The treatment plant was to be a tertiary system producing 1600 gpm of sewage effluent. Inspiration decided that this could possibly be a source of additional process water. It was decided to test sewage effluent from Miami Treatment Plant at the rate of 400 gpm since it was only a primary treatment plant. The 400 gpm was combined with the 5000 gpm of process water going to the Concentrator. After one week the results were disastrous. The recovery and final grade had each dropped approximately 5%. With the results from this brief run, it was concluded that sewage effluent from a primary treatment plant could not be used. Research was then brought into the problem to begin an evaluation of sewage effluent in flotation.

In many practical combustion systems ignition may occur through contact with hot burned gases . Such a process plays a vital role in flame stabilization on bluff bodies . It is also of importance in the ignition of firedamp by the hot spent gases of explosives used in mines . Also , in the communication of flames through narrow channels , a problem of practical importance in flameproofing electrical equipment , the propagation of the flame is essentially a reignition process in which hot burned gases are the agent of ignition . In the actual ignition problem a great variety of conditions may be visualized . Ignition may occur where pockets of hot gases are surrounded by cold explosive mixtures or where pockets of cold mixture may be surrounded by hot gases . Alternately , a flowing stream of combustible mixture may be initially in contact with another stream of hot combustion products , or a jet of hot gases may flow into a cold quiescent mixture ; the jet may be laminar or turbulent , continuous or discontinuous . The hot gas may also consist of the oxidant ( air for instance ) and the cold combustible pure fuel . This study by the Bureau of Mines is concerned only with ignition produced by a continuous jet of gas ( hot ) flowing into a practically quiescent cold mix- The investigation of ignition by bursts of hot gases or by turbulent jets is outside the scope of this report , and work performed on this phase of the problem has been published elsewhere

Large structural faults create serious ground control hazards, as well as adversely affect coal mineproduction. Two faults related to the Pine Mountain overthrust sheet in Buchanan County, VA, were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine their effect on ground control and to develop recognition criteria for prediction. Five underground mines encountering these faults were visited and mapped for structural information. This information, along with surface mapping, indicated that Pistol Gap and Keen Mountain Faults show right-lateral, strike-slip faulting and bedding planes slippage, which can be projected linearly and vertically. These fault zones are up to 200 ft wide, with coalbed offsets up to 18 ft vertically, coalbed swags (depressions) up to 15 ft, and roof falls up to 20 ft high. Recognition criteria include bedding plane slips, coalbed offsets, fault gouge, coalbed swag (depressions or synclines), and disturbed bedding. These recognition criteria will help an informed operator realize that many sudden coalbed discontinuities are related to larger geologic events (in this case thrust faulting) and can be projected linearly and vertically. Ground control strategies include mine designs that minimize fault exposure. Mining plans can be adjusted based on type and extent of fault movement.

There are 14 operations that supply 97% of the Market Economy Country (MEC) manganese and contain nearly all of its resources. Six mines account for about 70% of the production and 85% of the resources; there are no known resources that are economically close to those that are currently being mined. Costs (January 1989 dollars) of producing manganese concentrates from the operations evaluated are estimated to range from $ 0.96 to $ 1.86 per long ton unit (ltu or 22.4 lb) of contained manganese. Total MEC demonstrated resources evaluated amount to about 1.2 billion tons of in situ ore containing 474 million tons of manganese. Identified resources amount to about 1.8 billion tons of in situ material. Key results of the study indicate the following: 1. The MEC supply of manganese will be from the currently mined resources well into the next century. 2. Centrally Planned Economy Countries (CPEC's) will be increasingly dependent on MEC manganese ore and concentrate in the future. 3. At the 1976 to 1987 demand increase rate, total MEC resource needed through the year 2000 would be about 282 million tons of in situ material. 4. Transportation and infrastructure support will continue to be major elements of production costs.

Engineers at a West Virginia coal preparation plant owned by one of the nation's largest coal producers sought a fire suppression system for the plant's MCC and cable spreading rooms. Officials considered the traditional options of water-based sprinklers, dry chemical, and clean agent systems; however, each of those options presented challenges. Sprinklers can damage electrical equipment, proper delivery of the agent and adequate coverage/protection can be an issue with dry chemical systems, and clean agent systems require room integrity. An alternative to traditional systems was discovered in the Victaulic Vortex Fire Suppression System. The first hybrid inert gas/water mist system (FM 5580), Vortex adequately addressed these concerns. The system, which deploys a high-velocity, low-pressure mixture of water and nitrogen, is not damaging to electrical equipment and extinguishes fires in open, ventilated areas. This is one of the first installations of the Vortex system in a prep plant, and is a compelling example of how new technology can overcome the challenges of traditional technologies. The paper will detail plant specs, situation, and system evaluation, selection, and configuration.

"The International Cyanide Management Code (the Code) is a voluntary industry program for gold miners and associated cyanide transporters and cyanide producers. By becoming a signatory, a company commits to follow the CodeÆs principles and implement its standards of practice.Signatories are required to undergo an initial certification audit within three years and a recertification audit every subsequent three years. Recertification audits evaluate compliance over the preceding three-year period. This approach presents a number of challenges. Golder Associates has undertaken in excess of 75 initial certification audits and 25 recertification audits; more than any other audit firm. This paper outlines some of the challenges identified and lessons learnt from the recertification audit process. Central to the process is the challenge for organisations to maintain commitment to compliance over the full three-year period and effectively address deficiencies or non-conformances that may have occurred during that period in a prompt manner.The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) provides guidance in evaluating deficiencies or non-conformances, which requires consideration of the æcauseÆ, ædurationÆ and æongoing compliance effortsÆ and an assessment of the concept of ægood faithÆ in response actions. Golder AssociatesÆ experience with the recertification process highlights some common deficiencies with Code compliance programs, such as: system breakdowns (leading to ineffective communication between departments or loss of information) exceedance of discharge limits inadequate inspections, maintenance activities and associated record-keeping.Such deficiencies can be attributed to: personnel changes organisational changes or structures management systems (eg integrated or standalone) awareness and interpretation of Code requirements transparency of management decisions with Code implications.We have identified that ongoing programed assessment is an effective strategy in maintaining Code compliance.CITATION:Beazley, R J and Woods, M C, 2013. A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

Part of the work of the Precious Metals Section is to conduct oretesting experiments on ores selected as representative of various mining districts or areas . The projects are authorized by the Metallurgical Division , and only those ores in which gold and silver or gold or silver constitute an essential part of the total values are assigned to the Precious Metals Section . Such ores include those containing the precious metals only as commercially important ingredients , as well as those containing base metals such as copper , lead , and zinc along with the gold and silver . In many instances the "ore " may be a tailing product of a grade good enough to warrant retreatment , or a concentrate for which it is desirable to develop a method of treatment to avoid the expense of shipment to a smelter . It is evident that in general the greater part of this ore - testing work is done according to standard testing procedure , such as cyanidation, amalgamation, gravity - concentration , and flotation , or a combination of these methods . The standard methods of conducting such tests have been outlined in previous reports of ore - testing studies . However , since the inauguration of this oretesting program 6 years ago , the ores submitted under authorization have become increasingly more refractory to simple methods of treatment. Consequently, a considerable number of the projects completed during the fiscal year 1941 have required an unusual amount of work and in some instances have developed into real research problems . El presente texto describe la forma de realizar la extracción y recuperación de cobre y zinc a través del empleo del hipoclorito como agente oxidante y del amoniaco como agente acomplejante de los cationes metálicos. Entre las ventajas de su utilización respecto a la lixiviación tenemos: que las soluciones obtenidas son más limpias y los interferentes como el hierro, manganeso y aluminio se precipitan como óxidos hidratados en este medio, facilitando los procesos posteriores de recuperación de metales. Asímismo, se evita la etapa de extracción por solventes, obteniéndose de ese modo un precipitado metálico o de electrodeposición directa desde las soluciones de lixiviación final. En ese sentido, la extracción y recuperación a partir de minerales complejos con altos contenidos de carbonatos mezclados íntimamente con sulfuros secundarios en condiciones normales es la alternativa técnica económica viable.
