"INTRODUCTIONHydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts are ubiquitous in the ocean basins and play an important role in marine mineral-deposit research because of their widespread occurrence and high concentrations of valuable and rare metals. Directed research, which started in the last quarter of the 20th century, has provided significant results, with substantial amounts of data produced on Fe-Mn crusts structure, composition, and distribution in the global ocean [3, 4 - 8]. Now, commercial interests gain more and more attention. Mining systems are being developed which involve fragmentation of the crusts and their separation from the substrate. The effectiveness of such activities greatly depends on physico-mechanical characteristics of the crusts and rocks on which they form. This determines the importance of the engineering geological study of the objects.This article comprises the results of the engineering geological studies of the crusts samples (72 samples) and their underlying rock substrates (75 samples), which were carried out during the research cruises 6-06, 6-07, 6-08, 6-13 (2006-2013) on the Magellan Seamounts guyots in the Western part of the Pacific Ocean by the specialists of the State Scientific Centre Yuzhmorgeologia [10 - 13, 19, 20]. The iron ore beneficiation plant at Serra-Azul Mines of ArcelorMittal, Brazil operates at a rated capacity of 3.2 million tons per year. The ore is concentrated using magnetic separation, jigging, hydrocyclones and spiral concentrators. The tailings from the process plant are generated from classifier overflow of 135 tons per hour dry solids and thickener underflow of 48 tons per hour dry solids. A systematic experimental program was carried out using Multi-gravity separator (MGS), and wet high-intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS) for recovering the iron values from both of the tailing streams while minimizing the total quantity of tailings to be discarded. The classifier overflow contained 32.3 percent iron, 49.9 percent silica and 2.18 percent alumina and was 45 percent finer than 45 microns in size. The thickener underflow sample contained 47.3 percent iron, 27.6 percent silica and 2.49 percent alumina and was 16 percent finer than 45 microns in size. Separation results on the classifier overflow sample with the MGS indicated that a concentrate containing 62.1 percent of iron, 10.8 percent silica and 0.36 percent alumina can be achieved with a weight recovery of 24.5 percent. The results with WHIMS at 6500 Gauss indicated that concentrate containing 62.6 percent iron, 8.3 percent silica, and 0.65 percent alumina can be achieved at a weight recovery of 34.7 percent. 4.7 percent. WHIMS studies at 6500 Gauss on thickener underflow sample indicated that a concentrate containing 61.4 percent iron, 8.8 percent silica, and 1.74 percent alumina can be achieved at a weight recovery of 57.2 percent. Based on these results, and further in-house test works, a WHIMS installation was adopted for the recovery of iron values from the tailings in the operating plant at ArcelorMittal Serra Azul Mines, Brazil.

Neste trabalho foi estudada a corrosão dos aços API 5L B e X52MS em soluções ácidas descritas nas normas NACE TM0284 e TM0177. A susceptibilidade ao trincamento induzido pelo hidrogênio (HIC) foi determinada em cada meio, os produtos de corrosão foram caracterizados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e espectrometria de energia dispersiva de raios-X e, posteriormente identificados por difratometria de raios-X. Conclui-se que o pH afeta diretamente a solubilidade dos produtos de corrosão e a permeação de hidrogênio. Na solução 177-A, ambos os aços sofreram corrosão generalizada, enquanto que na solução 177-B foi evidenciada a presença de um filme fino descontinuo. Somente o API 5L B não passou no teste de HIC. Na solução 284-B de maior pH, os aços apresentaram filmes espessos e o trincamento pelo hidrogênio não foi observado.

A sedimentação consiste em uma operação unitária de separação entre sólidos e líquido, realizada em tanques denominados sedimentadores, que se baseia na ação do campo gravitacional sobre as partículas para decantá-las e removê-las da água. Sua eficácia é extremamente dependente do tamanho das partículas, tendo em vista que a velocidade de sedimentação é diretamente proporcional ao tamanho delas. Dessa forma, no espessamento das lamas, é imprescindível a utilização de reagentes químicos (coagulante e floculante) que possibilitem a formação de agregados de maior tamanho. Neste contexto, realizou-se esse trabalho para investigar o efeito da dosagem desses reagentes sobre a sedimentação de lamas de minério de ferro. Para isso, empregou-se o Planejamento Fatorial, por meio do qual se planejou uma série de ensaios de sedimentação, variando-se as dosagens desses reagentes. As variáveis resposta monitoradas foram: a área unitária de sedimentação, o índice de turbidez do líquido sobrenadante e o percentual de sólido do material sedimentado. Baseado nos resultados experimentais, concluiu-se que os menores valores de área unitária de espessamento foram obtidos em dosagens maiores de coagulante e floculante, ao passo que dosagens excessivas desses reagentes, especialmente de floculante, provocaram um aumento do índice de turbidez do líquido sobrenadante e uma redução do grau de adensamento da polpa espessada.

As part of the initial investigation and validation of a new boundary-clement formulation for stress modeling in coal mines. the underground stresses and displacements at two multiple-seam coal mines with unique stress problems are modeled and predicted. The new program, LAMODEL, calculates stresses and displacements at the seam level and at requested locations in the overburden or at the surface. Both linear elastic and non-linear seam materials can he used: and surface effects, multiple seams, and multiple mining steps can be simulated. In order to most efficiently use LAMODEL for accurate stress prediction, the program is first calibrated to the site-specific geo-mechanics based on previously observed stress conditions at the mine. For this calibration process. a previously mined area is "stress mapped" by quantifying the observed pillar and strata behavior using a numerical rating system. Then, the site-specific mechanical properties in the model are adjusted to provide the best correlation between the predicted stresses and the observed underground stress rating. Once calibrated, the model is then used to predict future stress problems abead of mining. At the two case study mines, the calibrated models showed good correlation with the observed stresses, and also accurately predicted upcoming high stress areas for preventive action by the mines.

According to the annual Bureau of Mines survey of refinery capacity, there were 343 petroleum refineries in the United States as of January 1, 1953, with a total daily crude-oil throughput capacity of 7,638,661 barrels. Compared with the previous year, this represents a decline of 7 in the total number of refineries, but a gain of 305,776 barrels in daily crude-oil throughput capacity. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased to 22,270 barrels, a gain of 1,319 barrels during 1952. All refining districts reported increases in installed capacity for the year, with Texas Gulf Coast accounting for 28 percent of the increase; California, 21 percent; and the Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky district, 18 percent. Additional crude-oil capacity under construction January 1, 1953, was 60 percent greater than at the beginning of 1952. The total reported, 509,721 barrels daily, is a record high for refinery expansion. In addition to the new facilities under way, facilities for 127,755 barrels daily are being installed to replace those that are obsolete. Four new refineries were under construction at the beginning of the year, and three of these are now in operation. Plans for five' new refineries have been announced, but actual construction has not been started.

IN examining the progress of metallurgical science, the critic must remember that most of our present knowledge of metals and alloys has been accumulated through the needs of industry and commerce rather than through the desire and efforts of a large body of scientists interested primarily in developing a science of metals. The progress of metallurgy, scientifically speaking, has been irregular, and little given to the exhaus-tive exploitation of important scientific fields. The experienced engineer now recognizes the need for the development of the basic science upon which his engineering rests. In addition to the increase in knowledge which results from the normal requirements of industry, a development of the basic science of the behavior of metals and alloys is as desirable in metallurgy as in any other branch of science and engineering. The continued growth of the science of metals-as of every other science-requires studious attention to the principles that underlie the behavior of matter, with the result that knowledge in the several fields of interest should continue to increase. Among the various subjects recognized as important in physical metallurgy few have a wider significance than that of diffusion in solid metals. The phenomena of diffusion are intimately related to many basic problems of the metallic state, but in addition to this, the process of diffu-sion is of first importance practically. The formation of alloys by the annealing of mixed powders, first practiced by Faraday and Stodart81 in 1820 and in more recent years investigated by Masing187,189 and others, has led to the development of special alloys like Carboloy, Vascoloy-Ramet, Genelite, Elcon68, and has recently been applied to the production of noble-metal alloys for electrical contacts"'.

Both the 8 and A-C ore zones of the Heath Steele Mine contain extensive areas of brecciated ore. This texturally distinct ore type has been tentatively defined as a fragmental or conglomerate massive sulphide. It consists of subangular and round fragments of pyrite up to 30 em in diameter, smaller quartz clasts and chloritized, mineralized, lithic fragments in a faintly banded matrix of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. The chalcopyrite is concentrated in the pressure shadows of the fragments and appears to reflect remobilization and recrystallization during a deformation which postdates the formation of the clasts. A generally conformable relationship with the underlying banded pyrite-sphalerite ore, discordancy with the host banded argillites, spatial distribution and similarity to Kuroko ores suggest that the fragmental ore is of primary origin and that breccia formation is probably due to soft-sediment slumping or sliding initiated by volcanic explosions, as hypothesized for similar massive sulphides in various Japanese mines. It is nevertheless recognized that certain structural features in some clasts may result from deformation preceding the formation of the breccia, and at this stage a tectonic origin cannot be completely eliminated.

"Abstract - The demographics of Nunavut indicate a very young and poorly educated population spread over wide areas in small isolated communities. The current economic sectors will be unable to expand and meet the demands of this emerging workforce. Given the realities of Nunavut, the most promising direction in which the economy may expand is through mineral development. The Nunavut Land Claims Agreement (NLCA) has established the legislative framework for sustainable development in Nunavut through mineral development. The NLCA has transferred ownership for much of Nunavut’s potential mineral resources to beneficiaries of the lands claim. Royalties generated from mining operations on subsurface Inuit-owned lands, and to a lesser extent on Crown land, will flow back to beneficiaries of the lands claim through their administrative company, which may then be invested in the communities. Additional benefits of mineral resource development in Nunavut will be realized through impact and benefit agreements.To realize the benefits from mining operations, Nunavut has to be able to attract and support exploration and development companies through the release of high-quality geoscience data. However, due to Nunavut’s isolation and the expense of conducting geoscience fieldwork, the jurisdiction lags far behind the rest of Canada in terms of quality and quantity of government geoscience. About 70% of the territory is inadequately mapped to attract exploration companies or to make informed land-use decisions. The role of government-funded geoscience in Nunavut is to stimulate exploration and discovery through new framework mapping and focused thematic projects. The timely delivery of high-quality geoscience products will attract exploration companies to Nunavut and further their efforts to discover and develop mineral resources in order that the subsequent benefits of this activity may flow to the beneficiaries of the NLCA as well as all other residents of Nunavut."

"There are more than 300 occurrences of fluorite in Canada. Deposits of economic significance, however, are confined to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in eastern Canada, Ontario in central Canada, and British Columbia in western Canada. Fluorite has been mined and processed intermittently in Ontario and Newfoundland until November 1990, when Canada's only producer Minworth Ltd., a U.K. based company, with a mine and concentrator near St. Lawrence on the Burin Peninsula, Newfoundland, closed its operation.CANMET has processed ore samples from each of the major mineralized areas, and thirty-one studies were conducted between 1920and 1970. A summary of the important aspects of the various testwork studies is presented. The production of acid-grade fluorite was possible by flotation, and ceramic-grade, by flotation and gravity concentration methods. Gravity concentration methods included heavy media separation, jigging and tabling. Flotation was by direct and reverse techniques; associated minerals, quartz, calcite, barite, etc. were depressed by a variety of depressants. The function of the major depressants is discussed briefly. The various uses offluorite which include hydrofluoric acid, chlorofluorocarbons, aluminum production, petroleum alkylation, fluxing and ceramic applications etc. are discussed briefly."

"During the summer of1989, Les Mines Selbaie, with the cooperation of Université Laval initiated a research project to evaluate the column flotation technology for its concentrator near Joutel, Quebec. The experimental work involved both a 5 cm by 11 m laboratory column and a 45 cm by 10 m home-made pilot unit Amenability tests were conducted using both units on various streams of the plant. Results showed that columns are not suitable for the copper cleaning circuit because the loss of precious metals, associated with the rejected pyrite, overcome the improved copper metallurgy. On the other hand, column testing at the zinc circuit showed improved zinc selectivity.Scale-up testing was', therefore, conducted on the first zinc cleaner concentrate using the laboratory-size column. The influence of variables such as porous parger grain size, wash water flow rate, airflow rate and froth depth values on column performance was' first assessed. Scale-up parameters were then determined using the optimal operating conditions from the previous tests. Simulation facilitated the determination of the most convenient plant-scale column arrangement.A number of conclusions concerning the experimental determination of scale-up parameters are also presented."

In the way towards sustainability, the next generation of efficient and heavy duty of Sandvik’s crushers, CH860 and CH865, are introduced for efficient crushing. As the secondary, tertiary and/or pebble crusher, these new crushers are designed to over perform in tough mining environment. Featuring higher crushing forces relative to the mantel diameter and 500 kW motor, combined with advanced automation system, i.e., sophisticated HydrosetTM and Automated Setting Regulation (ASRTM), combined with overpressure system with dedicated air supply in dust collar, etc., the new crushers provide higher safety, productivity, and reliability with the same foot-print of conventional cone crushers.Since crushers are more energy efficient than mills it makes sense to effort in fine crushing to save energy and protect environment. That has been the logic behind development and introducing stronger and more efficient crushers by Sandvik. The results on crushing hard iron and gold ores by CH865 have proven its efficiency in fine crushing at a higher productivity, availability and reliability rates through increasing throughput for defined size fraction and extended crushing chamber liner life.Within this paper the performance of the CH865 to deal with two different ores are presented discussed with a glance at how the downstream milling process can be benefited by saving energy and reducing the operation cost. In plant practice, the implementation of the new CH865 provides between 25 and 30% of the crushed ore in the size range of first step milling, i.e., < 2 mm, that offers opportunity for reduction in energy consumption in milling and even changing the process plant configuration by directly forwarded that part to gravity separation. Furthermore, potential of converting the rod mill to ball mill to improve productivity has been considered by plant engineers. Furthermore, some potential applications for such efficient crushers are brought into considerations and discussed. The new developments provide about 30% higher crushing force to efficiently deal with competent ores and pebbles. The CH860 and CH865 crushers are well suited to replace conventional secondary and tertiary crushers respectively; nevertheless, CH865 is virtual option for pebble crushing in SAG and AG milling circuits."

Downhole survey uncertainties observed at various De Beers operations prompted an investigation into their possible effect on deposit shape and volume. An accurately surveyed artificial æboreholeÆ was constructed and different downhole survey instruments tested. In this way an empirically determined error range of 0.1 per cent to ten per cent was derived for downhole survey data. These survey errors were applied to an orebody model at an existing mine. Visualising the sphere of uncertainty associated with a borehole trace using a general mining package (GMP) gives an indication of possible volume variance. The resulting orebody maximum and minimum volume scenarios for three different depths (200 m, 500 m and 800 m) are presented. For certain instruments and borehole angles, the 3D positional error can be as high as 100 m at 1000 m down the hole. At depths below 200 m the resulting volume deviations can become significant for borehole survey errors exceeding 0.35 per cent. At 800 m depth the volume difference can approach 25 per cent. These figures assume that the error is compounded. The impact of these downhole survey errors is greatest for pipe-like orebodies such as porphyries and kimberlite pipes. Subhorizontal sill-like orebodies (and coal seams) will not be significantly affected by these errors. The impact of this type of survey error needs to be stated (and quantified) and is significant in JORC classification.

A series of Al-Cu alloys has been cast from constant superheat to solidify either with a hot top or with a free liquid/air interface. All the other variables which affect relative fluid motions were kept constant except the imposition of slow rotations m oscillations of the mold. Depending upon the exact circumstances, evi-dence could be found for the nucleation of equiaxed grains from dendrite bits detached from the columnar zone, or from the free surface, or from solid bits induced at pouring; a special experiment showed the solute buildup during ingot solidification and by inference the reality of constitutional supercooling. All methods of grain nucleation are thus supported. When solidification is arranged in a static mold the columnar- to-equiaxed transition occurs by one of these nucleation paths, subject to the natural decay of temperature gradients which promotes nucleation or the survival of nuclei. But when solidification is forced under special fluid flows it may display odd transitions. In one of these the equiaxed zone is synihesized from. dendrite bits detached from the solid/liquid interface. These survive under the concurrent lowering of temperature gradients and eventually cause transition by impeding columnar growth. GRAIN structure control is desired because real experience shows that specific properties are associated with specific cast grain structures. But since control is thus a matter of need and does not require understanding, much of casting remains art. For example, the manipulation of relative fluid motions in simple ingots provides a control of grain structure development,1-4 but theoretical insight is not required in order to broaden its potential applicability. Fortunately, however, once a variable like fluid flow is recognized it can also provide paths toward new insight. New observations using this variable have provided an insight which is curious. All the theories or descriptions of the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) seem to be supported as long as the appropriate experiment is carried out. In order to develop this idea, let us ignore segregation, the chill zone (until a later section of this paper), and the origin and development of the columnar zone.= The details of questioning how equiaxed material forms in a casting may be divided in two. The first part is simply a questioning of the origin for equi-axed grains: are there fresh nuclei from heterogeneous nucleation, or dendrite bits broken off or melted from the columnar zone or elsewhere,6 or other solid bits surviving from the outset of freezing? The second is more complex, a questioning of the CET: does columnar growth slow down and allow the dominance of equiaxed grains, however they are formed, or do equi-axed grains take over and force columnar growth to stop? This "chicken-or-the-egg" second question can be quite useful, especially because it allows us to delineate the ordinary or NATURAL EQUIAXED ZONE and the induced or SYNTHETIC EQUIAXED ZONE. A natural equiaxed zone occurs if solidification proceeds in the absence of disturbances or extraneous forces such as ultrasonics, stirrings, and so forth. Both the CET theory proposed by Winegard and Chal-mers, 7requiring constitutional supercooling, and the CET theory suggested by Chalmers,8 requiring nuclea-tion only on pouring, pertain to the natural equiaxed zone. The best collating evidence to date for both these theories is contained in the work by Biloni and Chal-mers;9,10 the former theory7 is supported by special versions of the unidirectional growth experiment performed by Plaskett and winegardl1 and the latter theory&apos; is supported in detail for the solidification of small ingots. An equiaxed zone can be synthesized when disturbances caused by forced fluid flows2-4 or other artificial means9,10 break off or melt off dendrite tips from an advancing solid/liquid interface,* if (and only if) temperature gradients in the melt are (forcibly) reduced enough to ensure the survival of these bits of dendrites, 2&apos;3 Willful disturbances even so trivial as those produced by rapping a mold might be included here; as will be shown for example, this follows Southin&apos;s suggestion that the free liquid/air interface

IT is well known that particles of different sizes are not distributed evenly throughout the average charge in an iron blast furnace. Just how great the disparity in particle size in different parts of a single plane in a furnace may be is indicated by the results of some recent investigations1 conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a furnace operating on Lake ores. The wide variations found in gas velocity, gas composition, and temperature from the periphery to the center of the upper charge column were caused by the great variation in particle size of the raw materials used and were also greatly influenced by the methods of charging. This paper summarizes the results of an investigation of the influence of different methods of charging and of the treatment of raw materials upon the size distribution of the solid particles in the blast furnace. A more complete report will appear later as a Bureau of Mines technical paper.

During the past three decades, the oil industry has expended increasing eflorts seeking improved drilling tools or systems to reduce drilling costs. The total cost of these efforts is unknown, but it certainly amounts 10 tens of millions of dollars. Most of the "new" system that past and present investigators have sought to develop actually are old public information. In seeking to implement new-systern concepts, investigators have tested the following: impact at frequencies ranging from 6 to 300 cycles per second; electrical, mechanical and hydraulic meam of actuating percussors; bit rotary speeds up to 2,000 rpm; electric and hydraulic bottom-hole means of rotating bits; bottom-hole machines with power outputs up to 400 hp; shock waves; explosives; high-velocity pellets; flame; arc; grinding wheels; abrasive jets; erosion by high-velocity gases; chemical attack; electric current; magnetic waves; retractable rock bits; reelable drill pipe; continuous coring with reverse circulation; and automation of drilling rigs. Table I shows how these investigations are grouped for discussion purposes in this paper. In spite of these efforts to discover new and improved systems, rotary drilling main;aim its economic leadership. Undoubtedly, rotary drilling costs will continue to be reduced by rigid application of the best available technology and by development of new rotary technology. In view of the extensive past development programs, however, significant long-range improvement appears to be a research, not a development problem. Research must postulate and prove theories and principles governing variour subsurface rock-failure processes pertinent to both rotary and new systems. Ah, research must produce physical and engineering data relative to these processes. When such information is available, earth boring will graduate from an art to a science. Major improvements in rotary drilling can then be expected, and the systematic evolution of an improved drilling method can be initiated—with a strong probability for success. Development of drilling methods other than rotary drilling has been one approach investigated by the industry as a means for reducing drilling costs. Major cost-reduction efforts, however, have been centered on engineering development work aimed at incremental improvements in rotary drilling. A relatively minor effort has been expended to establish basic physical principles and engineering data pertaining to the earth-boring process which can serve as a foundation for the development of cost-cutting drilling hardware. Current oil-industry economic trends have added impetus to the need for effective programs to reduce drilling costs. However, areas for expanded future efforts should be selected only after careful study of past investigations. It is the purpose of this paper to review past and Dresent industry efforts to develop new drilling tools or systems and to suggest areas where additional science is needed. Past reviews of drilling methods have been limited to a few processes prominent at the time the reviews were made. This paper seeks to present a concise, well organized review of all methods that have received actual development or test work. The preparation of a paper seeking to review all past developments is fraught with many difficulties, not the least of which are errors in or obsolesence of printed matter used as source material and the lack of data on industry developments which have not been published. Iodide zirconium was combined with calculated amounts of nitrided zirconium sponge and arc melted to prepare alloys in the 0 to 6 wt pct N region. Annealing treatments were carried out at 21 temperature levels. Metallographic examination of the heat-treated specimens permitted construction of the binary phase diagram from 0 to 6 pct N. Features of the diagram include the peritectic formation of both a and ß solid solutions. The maximum solubility of nitrogen is 0.8 pct in 8 zirconium and 4.8 pct in a zirconium. An X-ray study of nitrided materials was made in the range 6 to 13 wt pct N region because serious nitrogen losses were experienced when attempts were made to arc melt these high nitrogen alloys. PHASE relationships in the Zr-N system have been determined. Due to the inability to retain nitrogen in nitrogen-rich alloys subjected to arc melting, definitive work was possible only in the range 0 to 6 wt pct (0 to 30 atomic pct) N. Sufficient complementary X-ray work was done to permit construction of the binary phase diagram up to 13.3 wt pct (50 atomic pct) N (ZrN). Small ingots were prepared by arc melting master alloys with enough zirconium to produce an alloy of the desired composition. Following pretreatment, alloys were annealed at temperature levels between 600" and 2020°C. Determination of the phase boundaries was then accomplished by metallographic evaluation of specimens quenched from the various temperatures. Incipient melting techniques were used to corroborate solidus curves, and X-ray diffraction was employed to study the nitrogen-rich region of the a + ZrN phase field. Materials Westinghouse Grade 1 iodide zirconium crystal bar served as the base material for this investigation. The as-received bars were lightly sandblasted, pickled in a 20 pct HN0-5 pct HF aqueous solution, rinsed in water and acetone, and dried. They were rolled to about 1/32 in. strip and acid-pickled, followed by water and then acetone rinses. The material was sheared to approximately 1/4 in. squares, cleaned with acetone, and stored for use. Pure zirconium nitride is not commercially available, according to correspondence with possible suppliers. A literature survey indicated that nitrogen may be introduced into zirconium metal by passing nitrogen or ammonia gas over zirconium at an elevated temperature. After considerable experimentation, a train was devised whereby high quality nitrogen was passed through a series of bubblers to remove the last traces of oxygen, through an H,SO, bubbler and a cold trap to remove moisture, and finally over zirconium within a resistance furnace. Hand-picked Bureau of Mines magnesium-reduced zirconium sponge proved more amenable to nitriding than the crystal bar. The nitrogen used was extra pure gas purchased from Linde Air Products Co. The first two bubblers through which the gas was passed contained a solution suggested by L. F. Fieser" as being ideal for removing the last traces of oxygen from nitrogen. The solution contains 20 g KOH, 2 g sodium-anthraquinone ,9-sulphonate, and 15 g NaHSO, dissolved in 100 ml water. It is blood-red and turns brown when contaminated with oxygen. A saturated lead acetate solution, next in the series of bubblers, removed any H2S which might have formed in the 0, removal stage. An H,SO, bubbler and cold trap removed moisture before the nitrogen was passed over the zirconium. The zirconium was contained in a stainless steel screen within a Vycor or quartz tube in a resistance furnace. Unreacted nitrogen passed out of the system through a mercury bubbler. A nitriding run was performed in the following manner: Zirconium was placed in the screen within the furnace tube. The unit was assembled, suitably clamped off, and evacuated to remove the air and moisture within the tube and that trapped by the zirconium sponge. The unit was flushed with nitrogen and evacuated twice. After nitrogen was allowed to pass over the zirconium for about 30 min, the furnace was turned on; several hours were required to reach temperature. The reaction was allowed to continue at temperature for about 4 hr and the screen was then withdrawn from the hot zone of the furnace by means of a Nichrome or Kanthal rod. The screen and its contents were allowed to cool at the end of the tube and were then removed. At 800°C no more than about 5 pct N could be introduced into the sponge zirconium. This material was designated M-1 (master alloy No. 1) and reserved for the preparation of alloys in the dilute nitrogen region. A second set of experiments was conducted at 1000°C; no more than 7.2 pct N could be introduced into the zirconium at this temperature. Enough material (M-2) of this nitrogen content was prepared to produce a second set of alloys to complement the first and to provide alloys in the 0 to 6 wt pct N range. It was hoped that a diffusion anneal plus a re-nitriding might yield a material of higher nitrogen content. The material containing about 7 pct N was therefore given a homogenization treatment at 1000°C for 6 hr under an argon atmosphere. It was

"Construction of mountain roads at north westerly Saudi Arabia is a difficult task in rugged terrains, where the rock masses are steep slopes, and full of geomorphological constraints.Werka descent lies at the north west region of Saudi Arabia. The Werka descent, constructed four years ago harmed due to rainstorm. The rock masses are metabasalt and metaryolite tuff rocks. The road is eight m-wide, surround by unsupported sharp manmade slope cuts, reaches up to 15 to 40 m height on both sides. Failures took place at both sides of the road, and blocked it. The road of almost 2 km long subjected to all modes of slope instability such as rockfalls, manmade slope failures and debris flows in the absence of the remedial measures. The very precipitous 40 m-high rock slope-cut along the road has no benches, backed by a natural slope of almost 80 m height. Both types of slopes suffer from rockfalls and slope failure’s incidents, frequently took place mainly in rainy seasons. The steep manmade rock slope cut is less than 1 m close to the road, with no ditches, form a potentially source area for rockfall’s hazards.Intensive geotechnical study includes utilization of the RMR and GSI rock masses classifications indicates that the rocks are fair to poor quality. The DIPS, RocFall, Swedge, RocTopple, RocPlane computer program, in addition to GIS and DEM image utilized to perform modeling and deterministic analysis, in order to suggest the mitigation measures for the natural and manmade slope cuts and rockfalls. The seismic coefficients of 0.1 to 0.4 taken into consideration in modeling processes. Input parameters to model the rockfalls and slope failure’s characteristics were studied such as GSI, block size; seeder points, locations of fallen blocks; slope angle, restitution coefficients, and slope roughness. The programs modeled the proposed location, height and energy of the rockfall barriers, collectors, and rock bolts. Two manmade slope cuts studied and modeled utilizing the integrated techniques were to eliminate the risk of slope failures and rockfalls through the construction of remedial measures, this is the study objectives."
