The age-hardening of Fe-18 to 21 pct Ni marten-sites containing small amounts of titanium, aluminum, copper, or molybdenum has been studied by hardness measurements, transmission electron microscopy, extraction replicas, and X-ray and electron diffraction. Electyon-probe microanaly-sis of the extracted precipitates was also performed. The effects of temperature and composition on the aging kinetics have been studied in detail for Fe-20 pctNi-Ti martensites. All the martensites hardened on aging at 400" to 500 "C with a single aging peak. In the Fe-20 pct Ni-Ti martensites hardening was associated with the formation of a fine dispersion of NisTi. No precipitation was observed in an Fe-21 pct Ni-2.6 pct A1 alloy, although the hardness increased from 327 to 545 Dph during aging at 500°C. Copper was precgitated from an Fe-20 pct Ni-10.7pct Cu alloy, at least during the later stages of age-hardening. Hardening in an Fe-18 pctNi-5pct Mo alloy was associated with the precipitation of an intemzetallic compound tentatively identified as NisMo. The formation of austenite and the recovery of the defect structure of the martensite occur simultaneously with the normal precipitation processes &ring aging of these alloys. THE age-hardening of substitutional iron-base martensites is an important subject for study since age-hardening is one of the principal means of strengthening the substitutional iron-base martensites in precipitation-hardening stainless steels1 and maraging steels.a~4 In contrast to Fe-C martensites, these martensites are relatively soft and ductile in the as-quenched condition, due to the low solid-solution hardening effect of the substitutional elements as compared to carbon. Also, these martensites are hardened by aging at low temperatures in contrast to Fe-C martensites which generally soften on tempering. Titanium and aluminum, singly or in combination, as well as copper and molybdenum, have been the principal alloying additions to stainless steels to obtain an age-hardening reaction.' Ti-A1 or Co-Mo-Ti combinations have been used in the case of maraging steels.3"4 The present work has been confined to a study of the age-hardening characteristics of an Fe-18 to 21 pct Ni martensite to which small amounts of titanium, aluminum, copper, and molybdenum were added in order to study the effects of each alloying element separately. The age-hardening characteristics of these alloys were studied by hardness measurements, transmission electron microscopy, extraction replicas, and X-ray and electron diffraction. Electron-probe micro-analysis of the extracted precipitates was also performed. The types and dispersion of precipitates, the formation of austenite, and the recovery of the defect structure of the martensite all were studied. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys. The compositions of the alloys studied are listed in Table I. The level of 18 to 21 pct Ni was chosen to assure complete transformation to martensite on quenching and is the same nickel level used in maraging steels. The concentrations of titanium, aluminum, copper, and molybdenum were chosen after a study of the and Fe-Ni-MO' ternary diagrams indicated how much of each alloying element could be dissolved in austenite. Alloys with 2 and 4 pct Cu were also studied, but these did not show precipitation hardening at the nickel levels studied and will not be discussed further. The alloys were prepared from electrolytic iron and high-purity* nickel, titanium, aluminum, copper, and molybdenum by vacuum melting of 20-lb heats. These were vacuum-cast into two 8-lb ingots. The ingots were hot-rolled at 1100°C to 1/2-in. plate and subsequently cut into 3/8-in. cubes. The cubes were sealed in evacuated quartz capsules and solution-treated for 16 hr at 1100°C, except for the Fe-20 pct Ni-10.7 pct Cu alloy and Fe-21 pct Ni-2.6 pct A1 alloys which were solution-treated for 16 hr at 1300" and at 1250"C, respectively. The magnetic field characteristics due to electromagnetic stirring in the secondary cooling zone of an extra-thick slab during continuous casting are numerically determined using Maxwell's equations, with particular emphasis on the distribution of magnetic induction intensity and electromagnetic force, as well as the influence of process parameters on the magnetic field. The orientation of the electromagnetic force is the same when the electromagnetic stirrers at the 30° and 60° posistions of the arc-shaped slab are powered in the same direction; otherwise, the orientation is opposite. The magnetic induction at the centre of the section of the stirrer's central axis at the 30° positio, as well as the current, frequency, and fitting formulae, are as follows: B = {0.075I.(1/A)-0.3} mT and B = {-1.75f.(1/Hz)+22} mT. The electromagnetic force and current fitting formula at the central point of the B-B section is F = {0.03168I2.(1/A2)-03.762I.(1/A)+326.7} N/m3, and the fitting formula of electromagnetic force and frequency at the centre point is divided into two segments. The first takes the form of a parabola: = {-21((f-4.3).(1/Hz)2)+970} N/m3, and the second segment is negative linear: F = {-1.65f.(1/Hz)+51.5} N/m3.

China has a traditional segment of Copper Smelters with its own Chinese technology, typically small in size from 20.000 to 50.000 tCu/a, and they are responsible for the processing and production of more than 600,000 tonnes of blister copper per year. For occidental experts, like one of the authors, it is not so easy to believe that they are profitable, because the size and the use of old Blast Furnaces, but they are with simple and effective production lines. The authors are convinced that China has a good alternative to improve theses old copper production lines with small innovative changes in its process arrangement, jumping to higher level technology, more efficient in production, productivity and cost, assuring copper as a raw material for the country and its high speed development. The key to improve that the traditional Chinese Copper Smelter is white metal as an extra raw material as a first step doubling the copper production from raw materials and the complete replacement of concentrates by white metal (WM) in a second step increasing it four times or more as the final goal. It is not so difficult nor expensive to make it happen, but there are a couple of questions for implementing this innovation in the copper smelter industry: 1 - Will the old fashioned mentality be open to this new direction for China being the biggest copper consumer on one side, and the biggest copper Primary Producers on the other hand? and 2 - Will they be open to follow this "win-win" strategic way for both ends of the copper market? We don't know if anybody will take up the challenge to improve it but our responsibility as a consulting expert and a university professor is to put the alternative on table for others to decide whether to implement it.

A breakwater is a construction for protecting the marine structures like port, harbor, or anchorage-basin and berthed marine vessels from the destructive influence of the sea waves. The breakwater is constructed by using geologically competent, heavy, massive rock like granite, basalt etc having physical and mechanical properties within the limits specified by the designers. The construction requires boulders in varying sizes ranging from 0.5 kg to 20,000 kg. The stones from 0.5 to 1000 kg are called as core fill and boulders greater than 1000 kg are termed as armor blocks. These armor blocks cover and protect the core fill and prevent it from escaping. The requirement of armor blocks ranges between 25 to 35 %. The rest is core fill. However, the actual requirement depends on the breakwater design. In this context, the task of the mining engineer is to economically produce armor blocks and core from the designated quarry in right proportion with minimal losses. The whole bunch of engineering ingenuities should be put forth for obtaining the required armor blocks. The armor block production from any blast depends chiefly on geological conditions, bench dimensions and blast design. This paper is an attempt to bring out the various parameters affecting the performance of the blasting for armor block production using a case study.

The mining industry is becoming increasingly focused on pre-concentration due to its potential economic and environmental benefits, particularly for the more complex, low-grade, high throughput operations now being developed. Advances in technology have seen bulk ore sorting (BOS) trialled at several operations. However, BOS should not be seen as a ‘silver bullet’, it can offer significant benefits, but only under the right conditions. Deposits with interspersed mineralogy or disseminated, fine-grained minerals can be difficult for BOS. Large batches of barren or low-grade material are required for BOS to be effective. Hatch has recently completed several studies for clients who believed that bulk sorting was the most suitable pre-concentration technique for their operation, based only on an assumed sorter recovery or on laboratory trials of the chosen sensor. However, minimal consideration had been given to the heterogeneity of the deposit, the achievable separation batch size or sensor repeatability. Evaluation of BOS needs to consider both heterogeneity and sensor suitability. The valuable or gangue mineral must be present in such a way that it can be separated effectively in the large bulk sorting batch sizes, without competing minerals or changing ore characteristics affecting the metal upgrade or recovery. Also, the sensor chosen must be able to detect either the valuable mineral, a proxy for the valuable mineral, or a gangue mineral for rejection with sufficient accuracy and precision (repeatability). This paper presents three recent case studies, emphasizing markers which indicated that bulk sorting was unsuitable for the project whilst highlighting the pre-concentration technologies which were applicable (including particle sorting, and coarse particle gravity separation). The modelling methodology, equipment sizing and forward work plans developed to verify these alternative solutions are also presented, demonstrating the key factors contributing to a thorough scoping assessment.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of laboratory experiments to test a cutting technique for hard rock using large-scale drag cutters. Cutting experiments were performed on rocks ranging in compressive strength from 10,000 to 27,000 Ib/in2, using large drag cutters from 3 to 6 in. in width. The tests were conducted on a special test apparatus, called a ripper tester, which made a curvilinear cut across the rock sample while measuring the cutting force acting on the drag cutter. The cutting method that evolved from these experiments is called ripper cutting, and its energy efficiency appears superior to all other large-scale mechanical fragmentation techniques. In addition, the method cre-ated very little dust, and the wear on the bits was negligible. A fragmentation system based on ripper cutting was then devised, and a large-scale test device was fabricated to allow full-scale laboratory testing of the system. The results of these tests will be published in future Bureau reports.

Introduction During the past summer, detailed geological mapping was extended to cover the entire group of 31 claims owned by Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery Mines, Ltd., and considerable new information was revealed by development and exploratory work underground. These new facts provide a more complete view of the lithology and structure of the area than has heretofore been available. They also necessitate revision of certain interpretations presented last year by Peale (l), and have served to straighten out some of the problems suggested by Porritt (2). The purpose of this paper is to outline in a broad way the relations as now understood and to discuss in detail certain points which should be of interest to members of the Institute. Maps and records by the mine staff have been freely used in arriving at the interpretation presented in the following pages. The writers are especially indebted to Mr. R. V. Porritt, the mine manager, with whom many of the problems touched upon were discussed on the ground and whose intimate knowledge of the geology of the underground workings aided greatly in testing various hypotheses. The writers have profited greatly, also, from close association with Dr. W. F. James during the course of the work. Permission to publish the included data has very kindly been given .by the management.

El presente texto describe los principales métodos usados en las etapas de prospección por petróleo para así establecer la inversión en la búsqueda de petróleo. La exploración de petróleo es una de las más riesgosas dado que los estudios geológicos previos a la zona, no siempre se corresponden las espectativas de la inversión. Pese a estos inconvenientes, el petróleo se sigue consolidando como la principal fuente de energía del país, tanto por su Es bajo costo, poder calorífico y las ventajas para el transporte y manipuleo. De forma que la provisión de productos de petróleo, como su abastecimiento nunca ha representado un problema en el país, sobrepasando los 15 000, 000 barriles de petróleo hacia 1958. De otro lado, el circuito de prospección de petróleo comprende la roca reservorio, la roca madre y la roca sello, cuya acumulación de capas genera irregularidades y forma las trampas petrolíferas. Reunida estas condiciones para la acumulación de petróleo, hay posibilidades de que la zona a explorar contenga algún yacimiento petrolífero. Sin embargo, existen casos donde se hay una superposición de estratos a manera de reservorio que ocultan la posibilidad de un yacimiento, como es el caso del desierto de Sechura o la montaña del Perú. En estos casos, se emplea los métodos geofísicos de prospección que verifican el indicio de las condiciones estructurales del subsuelo. Entre los distintos métodos utilizados, tenemos a los gravimétricos, basados en la medición de variaciones de la atracción de la gravedad sobre la superficie de la tierra; los métodos magnéticos, que miden las variaciones del campo magnético terrestre, generados por las propiedades magnéticas anómalas del subsuelo; los métodos sísmicos que son los más usados dado que informan de forma precisa sobre la condición geológica del subsuelo, y los métodos eléctricos, que son los menos usados puesto que otorgan datos superficiales sobre las condiciones geológicas del subsuelo. Finalmente, para el costo de exploración del petróleo se tiene que equilibrar los siguientes factores: los métodos de prospección, costo de materiales y equipo, sueldos del personal, número de puntos de observación, facilidades de transporte y las clases de terreno y clima.

The Mattagami mining district encompasses a favour-?able belt of folded Keewatin-type rocks, with intercalated sediments and intrusives of late Keewatin age. This environment has been subjected to periods of basic and acidic intrusion. The orebodies lie within the fold structure and are associated with faulting and shearing of considerable magnitude. The No. 1 orebody contains 60 to 70 per cent massive sulphides. The minerals, in their order of abundance, are generally: pyrite, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, magnetite and chalcopyrite. It is evident that the broad geological structure of the district is amenable to ore deposition. There are two ? prominent linear expressions which comprise this broad structure. Both strike directions lie at the edge of, or are related to, a complex gabbro-anorthosite-peridotite zone. The fact that eleven of the ore zones discovered to date coincide with the broad structure indicates its over-all importance. It is estimated that the production from Mattagami Lake Mines will be in the range of 600 to 700 tons of zinc concentrate and 70 tons of copper concentrate per day.

"INTRODUCTION The characterization of groundwater hydrogeology is a common component in feasibility studies, geotechnical investigations and regulatory permitting for mining operations. The lithology at a location of interest may include several discrete water-bearing units; and the means of isolating each for testing can be accomplished through the use of inflatable packers. Consideration for testing during drilling program planning and communication between all stakeholders is essential to ensure that the Mine, Drilling Contractor and Hydrogeological Testing Specialist (Specialist) are ready to perform packer testing when the call is made to mobilize. Often, the notice to mobilize can be delayed and then occur with little warning due to the issues that can occur during drilling of very deep boreholes, as well as other factors. Hydrogeological investigation reports and journal articles generally discuss testing methods and results, with limited information available describing the planning and coordination of the field testing program, as evidenced by the lack of references cited below. The source of inspiration for the subject matter of this paper is grounded in the author’s past shortsightedness; with the hope that others not share similar misfortunes but experience success through thorough preparation for their future hydrogeological testing programs. The sections below focus on the planning stages of a field investigation using inflatable packers, including considerations for site specific conditions, designation of stakeholder responsibilities, and communication of testing expectations. Following these sections is a presentation of two examples of successful field programs and lessons learned in addressing problems encountered along the way. PRELIMINARY PROGRAM PLANNING & CONSIDERATIONS From the onset of planning for drilling programs, the Specialist should be in communication with the Mine to review plans and identify fatal flaws which could impede collection of hydrogeological data. Preliminary scope decisions can significantly affect the budget and duration of hydrogeological field programs and may dictate the means by which the field data is collected. The issues that need to be considered include the following factors. Testing Objectives The setup of the packer tool is dependent on the testing objectives. Is the goal to estimate bulk aquifer hydraulic conductivity or to identify discrete discontinuity hydraulic characteristics? Are groundwater samples needed? The answers to these questions affect selection of test interval length and what instrumentation might need to piggyback on the packer tool. Identifying the testing goals initially will provide adequate time to prepare packer equipment for mobilization. Borehole Size While inflatable packers come in many shapes and sizes, some sizes are more readily available and easier to procure on short notice. Packers for NQ and HQ size boreholes have been historically easy to procure and are commonly used in exploration drilling. Packer equipment is available for smaller holes, but it becomes more difficult to fit instrumentation down-hole as the borehole size decreases. This is particularly a consideration if collection of groundwater samples is required. In addition, risks of losing the hole or equipment downhole are greater for smaller boreholes. Larger boreholes require larger packers and clearly require more effort and heavier capacity machinery to manually manipulate due to the increased size."

An Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between glass sphere and silica plate in CnTAC1 (n=12, 14, 16, 18) solutions. The results showed the presence of long-range attractive forces that can be fitted to single exponential functions. With a given surfactant, the attractive force increased with increasing concentration, and reached a maximum at the point of charge neutralization (p.c.n.). The decrease in the attractive force above the p.c.n. is probably due to the inverse orientation of the surfactant molecules. A plot of the log (p.c.n.) vs. the number of carbons in the hydrocarbon chains of the Cn TACI homologues showed a linear relationship with a slope of -0.37, indicating that the surfactant adsorption entails a decrease in free energy by -0.85 kT per mole of CH2 (or CH3) group. These results suggest that the adsorption of long-chain surfactants is controlled by hydrocarbon chain association during the process of forming surface hemi-micelles (or domains). Possible origins of the long-range attractions are discussed on the basis of the results presented in this communication.

Rather than attempting to present a summary of the many and highly varied papers that have been presented at this symposium on sampling and grade control, I will attempt to extract the general philosophy of analysis and approach, and attempt to identify the trend of future developments. First, the term "sampling" is used with its broadest connotations. A sample consists of a representative portion of a larger mass, and must represent the mass not only in the grade of contained metals or minerals, but also in all other respects in terms of mineralogy and mineral quality (1, 5), deleterious materials, recoverability of economic components, physical behavior, geophysical response (I), and even archaeological and environmental aspects (7, 11). The sample must be taken from a locality and in such a manner and quantity that it is representative of the larger rock mass. This calls for complete and accurate geological control and an understanding of the nature and distribution of the contained chemical and physical elements and a record of the effectiveness of the different sampling methods. Second, value of a given mass of ore material is based upon its profitability - the difference between recoverable value and costs to achieve recovery, beneficiation and sale. There is a strong movement in mining geology control toward more complete analysis in determining cutoff grades and in grade control, as illustrated by the kriging of metallurgical recovery factors as well as grade at the Mercur Mine (8). To achieve a "profit- ability factor" as a guide for economic mining practice requires further integration of: 1) the value of contained metal or mineral, 2) percentage recovery of values, 3) dilution of ore with waste rock, 4) addition to, or loss of value as a consequence of by-product materials or deleterious components, 5) cost of producing a saleable product plus mini- mum profit to justify the effort (cutoff), and 6) cost of land restoration (7, 11). All these parameters vary with the rock type, rock structure, mineralogy, depth, geometry, mining and metallurgical methods, but they must be sampled and analyzed if sampling and grade control are to reflect profitability. A wide variety of deposits has been presented at this symposium; each deposit with its own problems and special solutions. Deposits containing high unit-value components, e.g. precious metals and diamonds, present special problems in the obtaining of accurate samples and generally require statistical analysis control methods or may disregard or modify occasional high or occasional low values, based upon experience (12 ) Grade control may be accurate for the long term but may vary for the short term. Bulk sampling is always essential. Deposits containing metals or minerals with low unit value are very sensitive to transport costs, and they are often very sensitive to small amounts of deleterious components or differences in physical or chemical behavior. Problems of sampling and grade control change with the genetic type of deposit, with the stage of deposit development and with the size of the information base. Precious metal epithermal deposits (2, 6, 8), because of rapid vertical zonation and erratic lateral distribution of values, have always been difficult to evaluate and maintain grade control and ore reserves. On the other hand, evaluation and grade control are relatively easy in bulk-low- grade deposits (4, 13). However, these deposits generally have a low margin of profit and are sensitive to mining and beneficiaton costs, price fluctuations and political costs. Industrial mineral deposits (5) often must be evaluated on the basis of their behavior, rather than by chemical analysis. Environmental impact generally increases with the scale of the operation, but certain elements or minerals have especially high impact effects (7, 11). In the exploration phase there is no production control of sampling procedures and careful geological observations are particularly essential. The greatest number of problems is related to the oxidized outcrop where the chemical environment of the ore body has changed and the contained values may have been enriched, depleted or values left unchanged (2, 6). Present evidence suggests that gold values may be very mobile under certain conditions (2, 6) and stable under others. Everything must be sampled in detail. Principal values and by-product or deleterious elements may vary dependent upon their position within the soil profile. Such factors as geomorphic position, erosion rate, vegetation, climate, etc., may affect the interpretation (1, 3). Bottom sediment sampling by means of a box corer, as a direct method of deep seabed exploration for polymetallic nodules, is the most comprehensive way to obtain various types of geological information on points forming a network of stations. However, direct information is lacking from areas separating those stations and has to be approximated by interpolation or extrapolation, which leads to uncertainties. Sediment sampling with a gravity or piston corer can provide information on the superficial, up to 4 m thick, part of the sedimentary cover. As opposed to box coring, gravity or piston coring provides no information on nodule abundance. Information for unsampled areas can be gained by application of remote techniques of exploration. The techniques of choice in visualising nodule-rich fields, nodule-free areas, hard rock outcrops and other obstacles for seafloor mining involve using sonar and continuous deep sea (CDS) camera. Seafloor mapping can be rendered with two major sonar types: the side scan sonar used to obtain seafloor imagery and multibeam sonar for bathymetric data; the two types are usually combined and work with an intermediate frequency profiler. Photo-profiling by means of a deep sea towed camera provides a series of seafloor photographs, each supplemented with information on the area covered by each frame, including the nodule abundance. Remote techniques have been quite frequently applied by the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) in nodule field exploration. Recently, geoacoustic techniques (side scan sonar + profiler) and CDS were applied for exploration of IOM?s first prime area H11 (5372 km2) on 6 transects. During the IOM-2009 cruise, a total of 295 km of geoacoustic transects and 344 km of photo-transects were surveyed. The data obtained were processed with the aid of earlier information produced by multibeam sonar surveys. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the advantages of remote techniques, particularly with regard to application of the towfish device, for geological and geotechnical applications in exploration for polymetallic nodules.

"El presente texto señala las formas en que se presenta el sílice libre y las principales rocas constituyentes del material generador de la silicosis. En ese sentido, el ""sílice libre"" se presenta a través de tres formas: cristalizada, criptocristalina y amoría. Sus diversas variedades en forma de cuarzo son el cristal de roca, el cuarzo amatista, cuarzo rosado, amarillo, ahumado, lechoso, ferruginoso, etc. De otro lado, la presencia del cuarzo en las rocas ígneas sirve de base para su clasificación en ácidas, intermedias, básicas y ultrabásicas. Las rocas ácidas son las que contienen más de 10% de cuarzo, las intermedias menos de 10% de cuarzo y las básicas y ultrabásicas, carecen de este mineral en su esencia. Asimismo para determinar el grado de peligrosidad del polvo es necesario revisar la concentración de partículas de polvo, a través de una muestra y cuenta de los mismos. El muestreo se basa siguiendo diferentes técnicas basadas en principios fiísicos como filtración, estrellamiento, precipitación electrostática y térmica. Mientras que la cuenta de partículas se efectúa mediante un microscopio provisto de un sistema óptico standarizado y diferentes tipos de celdas (Dunn, hemacitómetro y la celda Hatch). Cabe aclarar que no es posible la comparación de peligrosidad de dos polvos, basándonos solo en el componenente sílice, sino que el tamaño de las partículas y la concentración en el ambiente, son factores a considerar para su evaluación. Entre los métodos importantes de determinación cuantitativa de sílice libre tenemos: químicos y físicos. KEYNOTE of the mining geology sessions was the preparation for an extensive war with all that this implies as to the need for strategic minerals, both metallic and nonmetallic. Nevertheless the sessions also included many papers of less urgent, more theoretical interest. The stress of wartime production had the effect of giving an unusually full and rich program, the longest in recent years, with sessions continuing virtually throughout the meeting. Some papers dealt with geophysical prospecting as applied to mining geology; others were concerned with the grand strategy of mineral reserves and thus involved the industrial minerals; such "borderline" subjects were presented before sessions held jointly with the Geophysics Committee or the Industrial Minerals Division.

The 2003 redoubling in power to 68MW on the Polokwane Smelter furnace represented a significant intensification in platinum group metal (PGM) smelting. Combined with onerous ‘green’ PGM concentrate smelting requirements, this yielded conditions unusually corrosive to copper coolers and refractories. This presented unexpected operational and design challenges to reliable crucible operation and maintenance. Combined with specific operational control intervention, development of protective coatings has led to the life of water-cooled copper components improving from 9 to 40 months. The furnace matte endwall was extended in 2010 to address accelerated wear of refractories and the potential risk for contact of copper components by superheated matte. An 18 month planned endwall rebuild cycle has been demonstrated (versus catastrophic failure within 9 months). Finally, benefits including lower energy consumption, improved metal recoveries and higher productivity resulting from operational and in-house design developments will be described, that justify “Celebrating the Mega-scale” in PGM smelting.

The portion of the earth's surface covered by peatlands has been conservatively estimated at over 420 million ha (Kivinen and Pakarinen 1980). It is estimated that there are about 170 million ha of peatland in Canada. New Brunswick contains about 140,000 ha. Harvesting of peat for horticultural purposes has been carried out in New Brunsiwck since 1942. This industry, and the potential for using peat for energy purposes, indicated the need for an accurate assessment of the resource. In 1975, therefore, the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources began a detailed peatland inventory. Assistance from the Canada Department of Regional Economic Expansion permitted acceleration of this program and field work was completed in 1982. Information gathered by the program will form the basis for a management plan for future use of the resource.
