I. DESCRIPTION OF THE CLINTON ORES AND ASSOCIATED POCKS. THE Clinton rocks in Stone Valley comprise (1) thick layers of deep-red shale, (2) layers of reddish-gray shale interspersed with beds of sandstone and thin beds of extremely fossiliferous limestone, and (3) yellowish-gray shales alternating with thin layers of olive-colored shales. These layers of shale are all very thin and are at no point massive.1 A bed of gray-white sandstone varying in thickness from 12 to 30 ft. occurs in the tipper portions of the Clinton shales. This is called the ore sandstone, a name given to it by Rogers and adopted also by the Second Pennsylvania Geological Survey. It is the surest guide to the presence of the iron-ore bed, which lies below its lower edges at distances varying from 10 to 20 ft. This ore sandstone, in the valley, lies generally at very low inclinations, but often is locally subjected to considerable changes in dip. At its outcrop this ore sandstone weathers very easily and yields a rather sparse crop of stone, Composed of dirty, iron-stained boulders. Upon the roads these boulders are quite well rounded, and bear fragments of crinoid stems and other fossil forms. The ore sandstone exhibits at many points evidences of former movements in this very great thickness of the shales, and as it is the only stratum in this series competent to transmit and record stresses due to structural movements, its evidence is of considerable importance in determining the occurrence of movements in times past.

"The uranium deposits upon which the Rabbit Lake project story is based are located at the eastern margin of the Athabasca Basin just west of Wollaston Lake in northern Saskatchewan. This paper provides a general review of the exploration history for the major deposits and the influence of an expanding geological data base, which served to guide the continuing exploration programs.A brief description of each of the deposits is provided in order of their discovery and with emphasis upon their relative geological and mineralogical characteristics.The Rabbit Lake and Eagle Point orebodies are monometallic uranium deposits localized by thrust faults within the Aphebian Wollaston Group. The Cof/ins Bay A-zone, B-zone, and D-zone are polymetaflic U, Ni, As, Co (Au , Ag) deposits located within the Helikian Athabasca Group at its unconformable contact with the underlying Wollaston Group. INTRODUCTIONThis paper demonstrates the importance of applying the accumulated geological knowledge, gained through the exploration, mining, and development process, to the ongoing success of exploration programs. To emphasize this point, the basic geology of each of the major Rabbit Lake area deposits will be presented in chronological order of their discovery and subsequent development. These depos its include Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point. The geological descriptions are based primarily upon the detailed observations of many current and former geologist s employed by both Gulf Minerals Canada Limited and Eldorado Resources Limited. Much of the early historical data was obtained from Dr. E.E.N. Smith, formerly with Eldorado Resources Limited. Regional GeologyThe Rabbit Lake area which includes the Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point deposit s, is located on the eastern edge of the Athabasca Basin close to the western shores of Wollaston Lake (Fig. I). The area is in the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield within the Wollaston lithostructural domain, at the eastern edge of the Athabasca Group. The uranium deposits occur within both the Wollaston Group metasedimentary assemblage of probable early Aphebian age, and the diagenetic ally altered quartz sandstones and conglomerates of the Athabasca Group of Paleohelikian age. Both units unconformably overlie granitoid gneisses interlayered with metasediments and a graphitic iron formation all believed to be of Archean age. All uranium depo sits in the Rabbit Lake area occur in close proximity to the Paleohelikian - Aphebian or Paleohelikian - Archean unconformity."

The rate of FeO and MnO reduction from silicate and aluminate slags by carbon-saturated iron is dependent on both slag composition and temperature. Owing to variable stirring rules during- the course of reaction, the reduction processes occur in two stages in stationary graphite crucibles. In the first stage the slirring caused by CO evolution results in forced convection conditions in the slag. As the boiling action subsides during reduction, the flow conditions within the system become those defined by natural convection. Analysis of the data by an unsteady-state penetration model indicates that the rate of reduction is controlled by the rate of cocur-rent flow of' cations and anions from the bulk slag to the interface during both stages of reduction. The hearth reactions of the blast furnace have been extensively investigated from the viewpoint of equilibrium by deductions from controlled laboratory experiments. However, the literature contains relatively few studies that have been directed toward the area of slag-metal reaction kinetics, and the majority of these have been concerned with the rate and mechanism of sulfur transfer between iron and slag. More recently, attention has turned to the kinetic factors in the reduction of oxides from liquid slags. One of the first investigations in this field was conducted by Dancy1 on the reduction of pure liquid FeO and pure liquid Fe3O4 by carbon-saturated iron. The integrated form of the rate equation indicated that the reduction of FeO was of the first order up to 80 pct reduction. Over the initial 30 pct of reduction, the magnetite reaction was also interpreted as a first-order process. The rates of reaction were extremely rapid as indicated by a 30 pct reduction of the liquid magnetite in a time interval of about 1 to 2 sec. Phil-brook and irkbbride' studied the reduction of FeO from a lime-alumina-silica slag by carbon-saturated iron and solid graphite in stationary crucible assemblies. With the use of the differential form of the rate equation, the rate of the reduction reaction was found to be proportional to the second power of the concentration of the reactant FeO for both the slag-metal and slag-graphite reactions. These authors presented a number of comments in an effort to explain the difference between the molecularity of the above reaction and the observed second-order relation. One such argument, recently extended by Wagner,3 was that the rate-limiting step may well be one of transport control. A complete discussion of the proposed mass-transport control mechanism of this reduction reaction will be presented in a later section of this paper. Kinetic studies of the reduction of other oxide species, namely chromous oxide, titania, and silica, have also been reported. McCoy and philbrook4 used rotating crucible assemblies to investigate chromium reduction from Ca0-SiO2-A12O3 slags. First-order kinetic law was obeyed for the slag-metal reduction reaction as determined by the integration method of data analysis. Due to scatter of the data, any dependence of the rate constant on temperature or slag composition was obscured. Concentration-time data for the reduction of titania from blast-furnace type slags under reducing conditions were obtained by Delve, Meyer, and Lander.' The data were too few, however, for a formal kinetic interpretation. Kinetic data for the very slow reaction of silica reduction have been observed by McCoy and Philbrook6 and Fulton and chipman.7 The former experimenters found the reaction-rate constant for silica reduction by carbon-saturated iron to be 20 to 60 times less than the rate constant for chromium reduction. In their work on the reduction of SiO2 in mechanically stirred systems, Fulton and Chipman also found small values for the specific reaction rate and derived a high value for the energy of activation for the reaction. In both of these investigations, the reduction process was assumed to follow first-order behavior. schuhmann8 proposed that the rate-limiting step in this reaction is the diffusion of oxygen from the interface through a boundary-layer film to the bulk metal phase, and Rawling and Elliott9 have reported experimental confirmation of this hypothesis for temperatures below 1600°C. Turkdogan et a1.10 have also concluded that the rate of reduction of silica is a slow process and controlled by the diffusion of oxygen in the metal, but only in the absence of carbon monoxide bubbles at the slag-metal interface. In the presence of bubbles, achieved either by injecting carbon monoxide at the slag-metal interface or by blowing it through the metal and slag, these investigators found a rather rapid reduction of silica which appeared to be controlled by an interfacial reaction involving the de-sorption of silicate ions from the slag-metal interface to the metal phase as silicon and oxygen atoms. A generalized mathematical model has been developed to describe the kinetics of gas-solid reactions with special attention given to the hydrogen reduction oj dense spheres of hematite. This reduction process must pvoceed through a sequence of transport and chemical .reaction steps acting in series. Under typical experimental conditions, none oj the individual transport and reaction resistances may be neglected in the development of a physically significant model. A linear vate of thickening oj the product layer, usually taken as evidence of interface-controlled .reuction, may be observed even though transport resistances play a dominant role in the over-all kinetics. The temperature and pressure dependencies of all terms have been carefully evaluated in order to .make fill use oj arailable expe-inzental data in evaluation oj the model. FOR obvious technological reasons, the kinetics of reduction of iron oxides has become the subject of intensive experimental and theoretical investigation during recent years. Continuing efforts to construct mathematical models to describe the kinetics of reaction between a gas stream and a granular bed of solid particles have demonstrated the necessity of a thorough understanding of the reaction kinetics of a single particle within the system as a prerequisite to the construction of physically significant models of complex, reacting systems. This paper presents a critical examination of the transport and chemical-reaction processes involved in single-particle oxide reduction and develops the mathematical expressions necessary to evaluate their importance. Comparison of theoretical predictions with experimental results contributes important new understanding of the complex nature of this process. The reduction process has been studied under a wide range of experimental variables, and it is not surprising that apparent conflicts in observation and interpretation appear in the literature. The interested reader is referred to the reviews of Themelis and auvin"? and Manning and philbrook3 for a description of much of this work. The course of reaction commonly has been followed by measuring the oxygen weight loss from the particle as a function of time. A number of authors have suc- cessfully correlated their data in terms of a model which assumes that the reduction process is controlled by the rate of reaction at a single, sharply defined, advancing interface. According to this model, the interface will advance linearly with time. A mathematical model for gaseous reduction in a packed bed developed by the present authors in an earlier paper4 recognized that reduction must proceed through the series hematite (Fe203), magnetite (Fe30,), wiistite (Fe,O), and finally metallic iron. The reduction scheme permitted a stepwise topochemical reduction of the individual particles to metal or to the lowest oxide thermodynamically possible for the local gas composition in the bed. The limiting situations of theoretically dense and very porous oxide structures were considered. On the basis of available experimental evidence, the simplifying assumption was made in each case that all product layers would thicken linearly with time. A generalized single-particle model has now been developed to determine the significance of transport resistances in the product layers and in the gas film surrounding the particle. The analysis shows that the interplay of transport and chemical resistances is such that an apparently linearly advancing interface may be observed despite the fact that the reaction may be under significant transport control. Attention thus far has been focused on the development of a model for the topochemical behavior of dense spheres of hematite in atmospheres capable of reducing them completely to metal. The formation of successive product layers of iron, Fe,O, and Fe304 is assumed to follow the mechanism originally described by dstrijm.' All oxygen removal from the core occurs at the iron/Fe,O interface, intermediate oxide layers being propagated by sol id-state diffusion without change in the oxygen density of the core. Since fractional reduction is operationally defined in terms of oxygen weight loss, the kinetics of the over-all reduction of FeZ03 to iron is properly studied in terms of the gas-solid reaction occurring at the iron-wiistite interface. The fractional reduction of a partially reduced oxide sphere is given by: here refers to the radial position of the iron/Fe,O interface. This model is not universally applicable because, as explained in the earlier paper,4 a consideration of porous particles or of dense particles in atmospheres not capable of reducing wiistite must allow for the possibility of gaseous reduction at interfaces other than the one between iron and Fe,O. "Cretaceous sands and clays underlie an area of approximately 5,000 km2 in Northern Ontario, southwest of James Bay. The deltaic deposits occur as a wedge of continental sediments to the north of an east-trending fault scarp referred to as the Precambrian Escarpment. They rest on older sedimentary formations of the Moose River Basin (Jurassic, Devonian) and are covered by glacial tills and marine sediments of the Quaternary period. Outcrops are restricted to occasional exposure in the deeply incised riverbeds.In 1975 and 1978, drill programs sponsored by the Ontario Government provided new information on the extent and quality of the deposits. Fourteen holes at approximately 12-km intervals were drilled to a maximum depth of 189 m by reversed- circulation chip drill methods. Some core was obtained as well. Analytical results show that the thickness of Cretaceous deposits exceeds 100m in several instances. Abundant kaolinitic clay and quartz sand of glass-grade quality, both unique materials in Ontario, are available in an area where hydroelectricity and lignite resources combine to enhance the energy outlook.IntroductionThe presence of refractory clay in deeply incised riverbeds in Northern Ontario was known to geologists travelling the rivers as early as 1875. Robert Bell (1877) reports outcrops of clay and lignite on Coal Brook, a tributary of the Missinaibi River. E.B. Borron in 1880 collected a sample of clay from the bed of the Missinaibi River which H.H. Croft of the University of Toronto considered to be ""nearly if not quite, equal to the Cornish clay used in the manufacture of English porcelain"" (Keele, 1920, p. 42). The Cretaceous age of the clay, sand and lignite deposits was determined with the help of plant remains collected by Keele. He referred to the deposits as the Mattagami series, which later became the Mattagami Formation."

As part of its mission to assure an adequate domestic supply of metals essential to the Nation's welfare, the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, investigated a particle agglomeration technique as a means for improving the flow of leaching solution through heaps of clayey or finely crushed, low-grade, gold-silver ores. Bench-and pilot-scale experiments showed that the percolation rate of cyanide leaching solution was markedly enhanced by mixing the ore with a portland cement binder, moistening the mixture, and mechanically agglomerating and aging the feed prior to heap building and leaching. The rate of gold and silver recovery markedly increased because of the increased, uniform percolation of leaching solution through the agglomerated feed. The use of concentrated cyanide solution instead of water during the agglomeration procedure decreased the leaching time required to obtain maximum recovery. Results of bench-and pilot-scale experiments are discussed.

"Kidd Creek Mines primarily employs sublevel blasthole stoping for underground mining operations. During pillar recovery in No.1 Mine and panel mining in No.2 Mine, the free standing fill exposures may reach a height of 100 m or more. Consequently, a competent consolidated rockfill has been required to fill the mined openings.Since 1976, a total of more than fifty stopes and pillars have been filled with over four million tonnes of backfill. Fill exposures, up to heights of 100 m, have stood up well after blasting adjacent to the backfill.The fill material consists of a graded aggregate, Portland cement and ground slag. Sand has been occasionally mixed in the fill material to serve as avoid filler. The aggregate is prepared in a fill crushing plant, transported underground through raises, and hauled to the filling stopes by conveyors in No. 1 Mine and by trucks in No.2 Mine.Two mixing methods are currently in use. No. I Mine utilizes the free fall of gravity; the fill materials are sprayed with cement slurry as the aggregate departs from the conveyor into a mixing culvert. The other is the use of a rotary mixer on a batch basis in No. 2 Mine.This paper describes the fill systems, filling operation s, and the backfill quality control practice, together with various testing results related to improving fill quality as well as reducing fill costs.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek minesite, located 27 km north o f the city centre of Timmins, Ontario, produces 4.5 million tonnes of copper, zinc, lead, and silver ores annually from its No. 1 and No.2 underground mining operations. DURING recent years nickel has had an increasingly important role as an alloying element in the copper-tin bronzes. Nickel additions not only produce better casting alloys but also make alloys whose properties can be varied by precipitation hardening; thus leading to increased commercial application of copper-nickel-tin alloys. Recent investigations have indicated a decrease in the solubility of tin in the alpha phase as the annealing temperature is lowered and as the nickel content is increased within certain limits. A further change caused by the nickel additions is produced in the excess phase of the copper-tin bronzes. The alpha plus delta eutectoid is replaced by a clear precipitated constituent in the alloys containing up to 15 per cent tin and not less than 1 per cent nickel. This paper has a dual purpose. The first is to present a new determination of the alpha-phase boundary in alloys containing from 0 to 20 per cent nickel, together with the liquidus and solidus temperatures above that field. The second purpose is to give the equilibrium conditions existing in alloys exceeding the alpha phase containing up to 31 per cent tin and 5 per cent nickel, so that the disappearance of the alpha plus delta eutectoid constituent may be explained. After considering the earlier investigations of the related alloy systems and the experimental procedure used in this investigation, the alloys will be discussed in groups as separate quasibinary systems containing constant amounts of nickel. The systems considered contain 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 and 20 per cent nickel. The straight copper-tin system was reinvestigated in order to establish a foundation on which to build the remaining material. The 1 per cent nickel alloys studied give the relations existing in the region of the eutectoid transformation between the copper-tin system and the 2 per cent nickel copper-tin system which has been investigated in detail. Evaporation mechanism of S from liquid Fe–C–S alloys at 1873 K was proposed by analyzing available experimental data. It has been known that increasing C content in liquid alloy increases activity coefficient of S ðfSÞ, and it could raise driving force for the evaporation reaction S = S(g). However, experimental data of the evaporation of S in the Fe–C–S alloys could not be accounted for only by considering the increases of fS. In the present study, formation of carbosulfides, CS(g) and CS2(g), was additionally taken into account in order to explain role of C for the accelerated S evaporation. Surface adsorption of S was also taken into account, which retards the evaporation rate of S. An evaporation model equation was formulated. It can be applied to calculate the evaporation rate of S over wider C content (from zero to its saturation to liquid alloy).

No presente trabalho, processos de conformação a frio e recozimento foram aplicados à liga de magnésio ZK60A (Mg-6%Zn-1%Zr) com o objetivo de determinar a cinética dos fenômenos de recuperação e recristalização para permitir o refino de grão. Para tanto, foi desenvolvida uma série de matrizes de conformação para a trefilação incremental de barras circulares da liga ZK60A inicialmente recebida no estado envelhecido (T5), resultando em reduções de 7,8%, 15,4%, 22,6% e 29,4%. Após cada passe de trefilação, as propriedades mecânicas do material foram determinadas. O estudo do recozimento foi realizado em amostras com o máximo encruamento a temperaturas de 400°C, 350°C, 300°C, 250°C, 200°C e 150°C. Pela metodologia aplicada, foi possível avaliar a cinética do processo de recristalização da liga ZK60A e determinar a sua energia de ativação.

The most commonly used material for terminals in spark plugs is commercial nickel wire, because of its relatively high temperature of melting, excellent heat conductivity, and slow rate at which the metal is oxidized, even upon continued heating at high temperatures. The grade commonly used for this purpose averages 97 per cent. nickel, the remainder being manganese, cobalt, iron, copper, with traces of other impurities always found in commercial nickel. A peculiar and interesting type of deterioration that occurs in these nickel terminals during the service life of the spark plug was recently brought to the attention of the Bureau of Standards. Commercial spark plugs vary greatly in their size and shape and the terminals differ considerably as to their relative size, shape, number, and arrangement with respect to one another. Although this defect was studied in detail in only one form of spark plug, the deterioration is a characteristic of the material, i.e., of nickel wire, rather than of the particular type of spark plug in which it was noted and studied. The mechanical features of the plugs, however, have a considerable bearing on the time required for the deterioration to become serious. The results of this study of the deterioration of nickel terminals in service should be of value to the makers of all types of spark plugs in which the terminals are made of this metal. CharacteR of Deterioration of WIres During Service Macroscopic Appearance and Properties of Changed Wire.—The nickel terminals in which the deterioration was studied were taken from spark plugs having a central terminal with the ground or side terminals attached firmly at both ends to the shell of the plug. In some of the plugs, two side terminals were used, one on each side of the central one. Although both terminals were found to have deteriorated to some extent, the attack of the central one was quite negligible compared to that of the side ones. These latter wires had developed, in service, transverse cracks that, in many cases, were as sharp and definite as a knife-cut. This Bureau of Mines report describes photolineaments obtained from stereoscopic examination of vertical aerial photographs and by the Ronchi grating study of aerial photoindex sheets. The photolineaments are compared with the trends of oriented fracture systems procured by measuring the compass direction of joints in bedrock. The relative reliability of the methods is shown, and the results are presented in graphical, tabular, and written form. Analyses of field measurements of strikes of bedrock joints in the project area indicate for the most part two intersecting sets of major joints oriented N 76° W - N 15° E, and N 57° W - N 27° E. The analyses of lineaments determined by stereoscopic examination of aerial photographs show dominant trends of lineament zones of weakness to be an average of N 65° W - N 20°E. Analysis of lineaments found by Ronchi grid viewing of aerial photoindex sheets indicate dominant trends of N 70° W - N 27° E. The three methods give similar findings and verify the work of previous authors. The Ronchi grid method is a useful guide, but it cannot be substituted for the two more painstaking methods.

The continued worldwide shortage and strategic value of nickel place great importance upon the continued development and exploitation of new sources of nickel in the United States, The deposits of nickel-bearing minerals in Oregon and Washington have attracted considerable attention, particularly since the Hanna Development Co. has engaged in development work aimed at producing ferronickel from the Nickel Mountain deposit, near Riddle, Douglas County, Greg. The Red Flats nickel deposit in Curry County, Oreg., was first examined by the Bureau of Mines in dune 1945, but it was not until 1952 that the deposit was drilled and sampled. In 1953, a 15-ton sample of Red Flats material was procured and subjected to continuous smelting tests in the Bureau's Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Greg.

The viscosity reduction effect of varied concentrations of leonardite (a naturally oxidized form of lignite) and leonardite-caustic on the rheological properties of a standard bentonite drilling fluid was studied and evaluated. The minimum plastic viscosity was found to occur at application rates of 4 lb of leonardite and 1.33 lb of caustic per barrel of drilling fluid. Leonardite-caustic treatment was not beneficial in treatment of salt-contaminated drilling fluids. Although filter loss rate was reduced; both yield values and gel strength were increased. Compared with other viscosity control agents) including quebracho) ligno-sulfonate) humic acids extracted from leonardite) as well as other reaction products of lignite) leonardite is less effective at low application rates but is an effective treating agent at rates of 2 Ib/bbl or more. Considering the comparable merits of the substance tested) the major factor in determining which agent to use should be based on cost consideration.

Research conducted by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated the feasibility of preparing columbium and tantalum metals by the application of Kroll-process techniques. Yields in excess of 95 percent were obtained in a modified Kroll-process reduction apparatus constructed from nickel and Inconel.4 Operating conditions during reduction and distillation were determined. Optimum temperatures during sodium reductions ranged from 650° to 750° C and for magnesium from 700° to 800° C with retort pressures ranging from 3 to 7 psig. Undesirable vapor phase reactions occurred when temperatures exceeded 750° C during sodium reductions or 850° C with magnesium. Vacuum distillation at 850° C effectively removed volatile salts and excess reductant from the reduced metals. Calculations based on the results obtained in small scale tests indicate that reaction rates of up to 34 lb/hr could be obtained during columbium reductions and up to 60 lb/hr during tantalum reductions in production scale reac¬tors. The small, laboratory-scale techniques used in this study could be adapted to commercial practice. The reduced powder or sponge metals can be consolidated by conventional arc-melting techniques, and the arc-melted metals can be fabricated into ductile sheet at room temperature. Analyses of arc-melted buttons prepared from Kroll-process tantalum or columbium showed that tantalum of greater than 99.8-percent purity was obtained and that columbium purity exceeded 99.7 percent. A significant purification of the reduced metals occurred when they were consolidated by electron-beam melting, and the purity and ductility of electron-beam-melted Kroll-process tantalum and columbium compared favorably with the commercial metals. After electron-beam melting, the purity of the tantalum exceeded 99.95 percent, and columbium purity was approximately 99.9 percent.

Small amounts of arsenic trioxide were shipped in 1988 from remaining stocks at ASARCO Incorporated's closed plant at Tacoma, WA. Imports of arsenic trioxide were at about the same level in 1988 as in the previous year. Legislation and Government Programs The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) levied a $1.6 million fine against Asarco for exposing its workers at its East Helena lead smelter in Helena, MT, to unacceptably high levels of lead and arsenic. The bulk of the fine was for violations of a respiratory protection program. The same smelter and its environs has been listed as a Superfund toxic-waste site by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Tests had shown high levels of lead, cadmium, and arsenic in the soil near the smelter. EPA planned to extend the cleanup to areas within the town of East Helena because high levels of arsenic had been found in shallow test wells outside the smelter site. Federal and State health officials have warned residents living in the vicinity of East Helena to avoid eating certain home-grown vegetables because of high concentrations of heavy metals.2

"The ProblemMany science activities receive substantial funding from governments without much direct economic benefit accruing to state or individuals. In contrast, the search for knowledge has never been an acceptable so le justification of geoscience activity, perhaps because of its utility right from its inception. William Smith's geological activities were embraced because of their usefulness in building canals. Utility has been expected ever since.For decades it has been accepted at senior level s of government, without much understanding of the process, that geological surveys are necessary as a basis of resource evaluation and utilization. Recently, government treasury board s, staffed with economist s, have questioned these near axioms and in many cases the budget s of geological surveys have reflected their stone y-eyed appraisal s. Are government surveys necessary? Can their functions be reduced? Can some or all of their functions be privatized?Government geologists have been muted in trumpeting their successes outside their own ranks. Companies have been reluctant to give specific public feedback on the work of government surveys that have truly aided or guided them toward discovery. Lack of acknowledged linkages between survey work and discovery has dogged survey managers in budget reviews. Impoverished surveys cannot perform adequately so the circle is completed and the doubters' prophecy fulfilled. This is the genera l problem; British Columbia is the archetypical province."

INTRODUCTION IN the sinking of bore holes, there are but two fundamental operations -drilling and hoisting,-which determine in the main the character of drilling mechanism and structures. There are endless ramifications, however, in the execution of these fundamental operations, according to the purposes for which the bore holes are drilled, their maintenance after completion, the protection and convenience of workmen, etc. The three main lines of use for bore holes are in mineral exploration, the sinking of water and salt wells, and the exploitation of petroleum and natural gas. This paper has to do more especially with the last. Here again there are many divergences. Wells may be drilled by either the percussive, the hydraulic, or the abrasive method. Finally, each of these methods, as applied by drillers of diverse nationalities, has followed somewhat different lines of development. The American system of cable-tool drilling has perhaps had the widest application; the hydraulic rotary is also in extensive use; but the Canadian system, the Galician system, and the Russian free-fall system all have their points of recognized merit and are preferred by operators accustomed to their use. These differences in drilling procedure, which rest ultimately on essential variations in geological conditions, are reflected in the chilling structures as well as in the drilling mechanism. The purpose of the present paper is to record those stages in the development of the application of steel to the construction of drilling mechanism and structures with which the writer has been intimately associated, and to contribute to the history of the art of drilling other data acquired in the course of his personal investigations. It is necessarily limited by reason of space to American practice, with especial reference, therefore, to the cable-tool system and the hydraulic rotary method of drilling wells for oil and gas.

THE Tri-State zinc and lead-mining district is in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas and the southwest corner of Missouri. The area throughout which active mining has been conducted is about 45 miles long and about 5 miles wide, extending northeasterly from Commerce, Okla., to Alba, Missouri. Although the lead ores were mined on a very small scale in the vicinity of Joplin, Mo., as early as 1848, nothing of any importance was done in the district until 1870, since when both mining and smelting have been prosecuted with considerable vigor. In the beginning the lead ores only were exploited, but within a few years extensive deposits of zinc ores were found and since that time the production of zinc ore has far exceeded that of lead. Both the surface and mineral rights in Missouri and Kansas were under individual ownership by the time ore was discovered. Although some of these rights were purchased by mining companies, most of the mining has been done under leases covering small areas, usually 40 acres, although in the past many leases were given on much smaller tracts. In Oklahoma most of the mineral land had been alloted by the Government to various Indian tribes and although the title to some of these lands had been acquired by various white men before the discovery of the rich Picher field, the title to most of the land has remained with the Indian tribes and the leasing of the mineral rights has been done by the Federal Government for the benefit of the Indians. The Indian allotments were of 200 acres each and some of the mining leases covered entire allotments, although many leases were granted for only 40 acres or even less.
