This paper proposes a classification model to predict the split coefficient of gold ore particles as a function of the particle size and gold content. The model is calibrated and validated using data obtained from the sampling of an industrial grinding circuit. Model calibration is based on a complete simulation of the circuit and involves parameters related to the gold grain distribution in the ore as well as a grinding and liberation model. Since cyanide is added into the studied grinding circuit, assumptions related to gold dissolution in the mills are made to allow simulation results which reflect industrial behaviour patterns.

In 1985, an extensive longwall mining research project was initiated by the West Virginia University Research Center entitled "An Improved Longwall Mining Technique" with the purpose of providing operational guidelines for the mining industry to enable efficient operation of its existing and projected longwall installations. One task involved in this extensive research project was monitoring ground movements due to longwall mining and evaluating their impact on surface and subsurface structures. This paper presents an analysis of the effects of topography on quasi-static and dynamic ground movements and the severity of damage inflicted on surface structures. The site was chosen for the study with an attempt to obtain a representative account of the topography experienced in the Northern Appalachian region, and more importantly to contain a substantial number of varying topographical features i.e., mountains, hillsides, valleys, and flat bottom land. The study was made possible by typical subsidence monitoring technqiues, however subsidence monuments were surveyed on a frequent basis, intermittently during face advancement. Ground movements were investigated under both quasi-static and dynamic conditions. This provided insight into the propagation of subsidence and the dynamic affects it has upon surface structures.

This Bureau of Mines report describes 147 known fluorspar deposits in New Mexico and briefly mentions 54 miscellaneous occurrences for which little or no information was obtained. Most miscellaneous occurrences are minor and too poorly exposed to be considered more than prospects. History and production of fluorspar in New Mexico, type of deposition, mineralogy, uses, and grade specifications are discussed. Total mine production of fluorspar in New Mexico is nearly 641,000 tons of various grades of crude ore and hand-sorted material. Fluorspar deposits occur in 13 of the State's 32 counties. Grant, Valencia, and Luna Counties account for 86.4 percent of the total production. During the investigation, 141 deposits were visited. A total of 72 character samples was collected for assay, and 3 larger samples were collected for bench-scale metallurgical tests. Results of these metallurgical tests indicate that an acid-grade product can be obtained with 95 percent recovery of the CaF2 content of the crude ore.

Hydrothermal mineral deposits are the dominant mineral deposit type in the Cullen Mineral Field, and have been important sources of tin, tungsten gold, silver-lead, zinc and copper. The deposits are mostly in north to northwest-trend- ing shear zones, and are confined to Early Proterozoic contact metamorphosed metasediments or synorogenic to postorogenic granitoids. The distribution of the vein-type deposits with- in the contact aureole defines a district-scale metal zonation of uranium closest to granitoid, through tungsten, copper, tin, silver-lead to gold with increasing distance from granitoid contacts. This zonation probably reflects de- creasing temperatures within the contact aureole during granitoid emplacement, and at the time of generation of a variety of metal-bearing fluids. A magmatic source for some of the metals is indicated by the positive spatial relationship between uranium, tungsten, copper and silver-lead deposits and granitoids abundant in those metals. There is little evidence for any such relation- ship for tin and gold deposits, except for an association of some tin deposits with tin-enriched mafic rocks. Most of the granitoids with anomalous metal values are late stage highly fractionated leuco- granitic phases forming younger plutons peripheral to the main body of the Cullen Batholith, They probably form cusps connected to the main body at shallow depths.

The diverse nature of inadvertent mine fires does not lend them to general treatment. But evolving from the unfortunate fires over past years is a simple principle in dealing with all fires to bring combustion under control. Control, in brief, means that the products of combustion, themselves possibly still with fuel values, are not revitalised by addition of fresh air. There are problems with fire- fighting, especially with water, as this may lead to production of CO and H2. Panel ventilation upstream of the fire must be controlled to direct all air over the fire. Some advantages in fire fighting are found by the use of "sails". Early diagnosis of fires and early treatment are essential for safety of personnel and safeguarding and recovery of property. Preparedness extends to up to date documentation, but first hand knowledge also is invaluable to the diverse personnel gathered to fight a fire, and in the decision making Involved.

The minerals industry in Australia is currently regarded as the country's economic saviour; the bastion of economic security. As Fitzgerald (1974) stated, 'Australia's natural endowments in minerals are the envy of most countries of the world'. As a result the proposed new mineral developments are on a scale that hitherto in the sixties would have been completely unenvisaged. It is reported that Australia is poised on the verge'of a sixteen billion dollar mining-based investment boom: a boom that will see Australia dominate the energy export field, the mineral processing field, and create the 'coal dollar'. This growth scenario has many inherent dangers, and it is the authors' contention that these should be carefully considered before further development proceeds. Two of the major problems related to the mineral industry growth scenario are the predictability of the future metal market, and the energy cost of mining. The latter problem is the one discussed here. The mining-mineral processing industries in Australia currently use about 36% of Australia's primary energy

Normalmente estos controles se efectúan durante la voladura en Bench and Fill, generalizando los resultados para un nivel completo los cuales están sujetos a prueba y error, sin considerar ciertas características del macizo en diferentes zonas de ese nivel.

Introduction A prime goal in the design and operation of uranium milling waste or tailing disposal systems is to mitigate adverse effects of tailing liquid on the adjacent groundwater. Adverse effects are often defined as modifying the groundwater quality in such a manner as to have detrimental health effects on downstream users. To accomplish this goal, the following three types of systems are employed with regard to the seepage and groundwater aspects of waste disposal: Type I Systems Seepage is allowed to occur unabated from the tailing disposal facility. Detrimental radionuclides and chemical elements are prevented from causing adverse downstream effects by natural purification actions in the subgrade geologic materials and the near zone groundwater. Monitoring is required to assure the predicted natural purification is occurring. The consequences of seepage loss is minimal since the m be predicted with current investigation and analytical techniques and can be evaluated as to effectiveness during operations. Type II Systems Seepage is partially retained in a waste impoundment or leakage from a designed retention system is anticipated. Natural purification is relied on for controlling migration of detrimental radionuclides or chemical elements, or contingency planning is employed to collect and return the tailing liquid to the impoundment. Installation efforts and concern for escape of tailing liquid are greater than for Type I systems, but extra precautions to preclude all seepage are not implemented. Monitoring is required to detect leakage and/or assure the natural purification of escaping tailing fluid. The consequence for accidential excusions are moderate, and will be excessive only if massive system failure occurs. "The supply chain for coal-fired power stations involve a multi-stage network of mining units, preparation plants, blending facilities and transportation systems. Attempts to optimize the supply chain have historically been difficult due to the lack of communication/coordination between the various groups involved in coal production, transportation and utilization. In light of this issue, a new approach for globally optimizing the coal supply chain called Micro-Price Optimization has been developed to simplify the optimization problem and to provide coal producers with fundamental insight needed to improve the profitability of their operations. This fundamental concept assigns unit values to each particles (or groups of particles) passing through production units. Optimization occurs whenever the maximum tonnage of positive value particles are recovered and passed to market, while the minimum tonnage of negative value particles are recovered. Elements considered by the concept include factors such as target boiler cost/efficiency, waste disposal costs, coal quality parameters, emission penalties, transportation charges, or other quantifiable impact factors. This article reviews the basis for the micro-price concept and provides a detailed industrial case study involving the determination of optimum coal qualities that need to be supplied by mine operators to feed a coal-fired power station. INTRODUCTION The performance of coal preparation plants have long been known to play an important role in determining the overall profitability of mining operations. This significance is due to the fact that the misplacement of just 1 ton/hr of clean coal to reject resulting from poor plant performance can represent nearly $300,000 per year in lost revenues for a mine producing a steam market coal (i.e., 1 ton/hr x $50/ton x 6,000 hr/yr = $300,000/yr). This loss can be even more pronounced, occasionally approaching $1 million per year for each 1 ton/hr of misplaced clean coal, for operations producing high-quality coking coal products sold into the premium metallurgical market (i.e., 1 ton/hr x $150/ton x 6,000 hr/yr = $900,000/yr). Detailed economic studies indicate that improvements in plant yield resulting from increases in organic efficiency have one of the largest overall impacts on mine revenue when compared to other cost centers within the mining operation. One of the first studies to show this important financial impact was reported by Norton-Hambleton Consultants (Norton, 1979). Their study indicated that an unfavorable change in plant efficiency was second only to coal transportation in terms of its impact on profitability, while an unfavorable change in the cost of underground mining was a distance third. This longstanding realization has continued to provide a strong financial incentive for coal producers to optimize the separation efficiency of their coal processing and blending operations."

Thiourea solutions can be used as leach liquors to treat gold ores or slimes. It is also efficient to elute resins or strip solvents that were loaded in cyanides solutions. The hydrogen pressure reduction is a practical step to recover gold and silver from leach solutions, and strips and eluates without any destruction of thiourea. It is a critical point because these processes have to consider the recycling of the liquors to be irore economical. The effect of temperature, pressure, acidity, compotation of the solution and the nature of catalysts on pressure reduction by hydrogen were investigated. An electranetallurgical study was? carried out to investigate the mechanism. The composition of the products was studied by different analytical methods. The process shows a good selectivity to precipitate gold and silver in a thiourea solution containing iron and copper. Gold and silver concentrations can be decreased to 0.2 ppm and 0.1 ppm at respectively 70 KPa H2 and 28°C. No decomposition of thiourea was evident during the tests. Metals such as nickel powder or platinum activate the reaction and improve the reduction.

"Seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) deposits have been identified as important marine metal resources for the future. However, literature on mineral processing of SMS is currently limited, and to date, no research has been published on processing of SMS from either active or inactive hydrothermal vent fields on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge. In this paper, individual SMS rock samples from the Loki’s Castle area were tested. Chalcopyrite, isocubanite and sphalerite represented the main copper and zinc bearing minerals in the SMS samples, whereas the gangue consisted of barite and silica. Based on the X-ray transmission response (XRT), i.e. differences in the atomic number of elements in tested samples, and using portable XRF (PXRF) values of elemental composition, individual particles were classified as a either product (low barium / high to low silicon / high copper and zinc) or waste (high barium / high silicon / low copper and zinc). The classification was based on the elemental composition of the samples with the cut-off grade equal to 0.5% for copper. It was shown that the XRT discrimination analysis correlated well with elemental (PXRF) data classification. The results clearly indicate that X-ray transmission sensor-based sorting can be used a useful technique for preconcentration of SMS rock samples. INTRODUCTION Due to different compositions of investigated samples, sensor-based sorting is a useful technique for preconcentration of different materials. The aim of using sensor-based sorting is to upgrade an ore by reducing the quantity of overall waste material reporting to the next processing stage. This can be achieved by eliminating (reducing) the waste fraction. By applying sensor-based sorting, the energy consumption for particle comminution as well as the required process water and reagents can be decreased. The total volume of the waste rejection leads to a proportional reduction in the total energy costs (Lessard et al., 2014, 2016)."

In December 1975, a report entitled "An Evaluation of the Accuracy of the Coal Mine Dust Sampling Program Administered by the Department of Interior" [1] was prepared by the Analytical Chemistry Division of the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), in response to a request by Senator Harrison A. Williams. Chairman, Committee on Labor and Public Welfare. The report attempted to evaluate the adequacy of (1) the personal sampler unit used to measure the coal dust concentration in the mines, (2) the procedures used by the Department of Interior (DOI) to analyze the dust samples obtained from mine operators, and (3) any recent studies made by the Department or private industry concerning the coal dust sampling equipment. Recommendations in the report of NBS included continued research efforts by the appropriate organization to correct the personal sampler deficiencies and to consider the use of area or stationary samplers as a supplement to the personal samplers. Concurrent with the NBS report cited above, the General Accounting Office (GAO) also issued a report in December, 1975 [2], suggesting that improvements are still needed in coal mine dust sampling programs and procedures relating to penalty assessments and collections. Among recommendations made by GAO, the following paragraph specifically called for actions by the agencies involved:

Recent research has shown that enhanced gravity separators provide the opportunity to effectively clean I mm x 37 micron coal. At Southern Illinois University, a detailed experimental program was performed on a continuous Falcon Concentrator, which was found to achieve separations at mass throughput capacity values in excess of 100 tonnes/hour. The apparent particle separation density for I mm x 73 micron coal was about 1.60 with relatively high efficiency (Ep = 0.12). Typical ash and sulfur rejection values of 85% and 70%, respectively, were achieved while recovering 85% of the combustible material. Metallurgical and efficiency data from the evaluation are presented in this publication.

This work reviews the new version of GB1499.2-2018 Chinese national standard and specification, which governs the production of high-strength reinforcing hot rolled ribbed bars in China. In addition, it discusses the main concerns from Chinese rebar makers that might affect production and application of Nb-bearing rebars, like reheating temperature required to dissolve given niobium additions, the promotion of bainite microstructure and continuous yielding, as well as Nb strengthening effects. Through extensive investigation involving both thermomechanical laboratory simulations and industrial trial, the existing state and effects of Niobium along the reheating, rolling and cooling are illustrated. At the end, optimum processing conditions have been established to produce high strength rebars for the specified requirements. The adoption of new process conditions reflected in an amount of about 20.0 million tons of Nb-bearing rebar being produced in China in 2018 with required tensile properties and microstructure, and helped rebar makers to reduce production costs considerably. Based on production data, Niobium demonstrated positive strengthening effect for high strength rebars, in particular for small diameter rebars with earthquake resistant performance. What is more, the results of the research enrich the knowledge of the application of Niobium in steels when TMCP rolling is not used.

Municipal governments recognize the importance of aggregates in the local economy and the need to manage this resource in the interest of the public good. They have encountered problems with regulating the industry and the dichotomy between the urban need and the rural source. They have suffered from a lack of financial benefit, an adequate aggregate inventory, provincial strategy, economic information and public understanding. A provincial strategy for ensuring the availability of aggregate supplies to developing areas of the Province is essential. The Province should also be responsible for licensing, research, technical expertise on rehabilitation, public education and financial assistance. Upper-tier municipalities (regions or counties) should assume responsibility for resource management, including resource availability, demand characteristics, truck routing, phasing of resource development and sequential land-use planning. Area municipalities (towns and townships) can best determine the social and environmental impact of a specific aggregate development proposal and should therefore have the primary responsibility for the location of new pits and quarries. They should also have the authority to supplement provincial regulations concerning operating standards and the phasing and standards of site rehabilitation.

"BACKGROUNDLake Hamilton in Hot Springs, AR was created in 1932 when the Arkansas Power and Light Co. completed Carpenter Dam on the Ouachita River to generate electricity. Today, the 7,200-acre (2,914 hectares) impoundment is one of Arkansas’s most popular recreational and residential lakes.U.S. 70 crosses Lake Hamilton by means of a seven-span bridge featuring nine steel girders per span. Constructed between 1982 and 1984, the 1,410-foot long (430m) bridge carries four lanes of traffi c across the lake. The bridge is supported by six intermediate reinforced concrete piers composed of hammer heads, stems, footings and seals, which sit on the underlying rock. (See Figure 1). The bridge rises to a maximum of 33 feet (10m) above the surface of the lake and the footings and seals extend a maximum of 29.5 feet (9m) below the surface of the lake. The seals are situated on hard, fractured sandstone and shale.Routine underwater inspections in 1993 revealed large cracks in the lean seal concrete and refl ective cracks in the reinforced concrete footings. Infrastructure Engineers, Inc., The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department’s (AHTD) design consultant, then conducted an in-depth underwater inspection of the pier foundations. The investigation included cross-hole sonic logging, singlehole sonic logging, visual examination and strength testing of core samples, and petrographic analysis.The investigation revealed extensive cracking and low-strength concrete within the seals of all intermediate pier foundations. Many voids within the seal concrete had become fi lled with silt. There was evidence of continued seal deterioration between underwater inspections.AHTD and its engineers considered three rehabilitation solutions in the preliminary engineering stage: micropiles, a cofferdam supported concrete jacket, or a pile supported concrete jacket. The three alternatives were estimated to cost $1,250,000; $4,320,000; and $3,030,000 respectively. All three options would transfer the loads from the pier footing directly to the rock below, bypassing the seal concrete."

Acid mine drainage containing heavy metal ions is a large environmental problem facing the mining and mineral processing industry. The femte coprecipitation is a novel technique for removing heavy metal ions from waste water, recently applied to acid mine drainage. The fenite precipitation is usually performed at high temperature and therefore if applied in conventional manner, it becomes uneconomical to treat large quantities of acid mine drainage. In this paper the ferrite precipitation at ambient temperature-is &died. The possible mechanism of ferrite formation is discussed Experimental results from Noranda Tailing and Berkeley Pit water treated by this process are presented.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen: It is a pleasure to be here this morning as a representative of Dean Witter Reynolds; one of the foremost international investment firms in North America. My colleague, Hugh Wilmer (who will be speaking to you a little later), and I are involved as research analysts in the research and writing of published reports containing recommendations on the buying or selling of North American and South African gold and silver mining shares. Our talk this morning will focus on the gold mining operating costs of North American and South African gold producers. However, I am not going to bore you with reams of statistics on the operating costs of large numbers of gold mining operations; how meaningful would this data be to you? Instead, I will discuss what the investor should look for, and how he should use this knowledge in making his investment decision.
