As escórias de aciaria, além de ser um coproduto da fabricação do aço, desempenham um papel importante na qualidade dos aços produzidos. Entender como elas se comportam durante o processo de refino é fundamental. Por exemplo, no refino secundário, a absorção de inclusões pela escória é umas das principais formas de se obter aços com maior limpeza inclusionária, e consequentemente, mais nobres. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo a caracterização de fases de escórias de refino secundário do sistema CMAS (CaO, MgO, Al2O3, SiO2), a fim de se obter informações a respeito de sua composição e fração líquida, além de prováveis fases sólidas. Para isso, quatro amostras de diferentes composições químicas foram fundidas em forno elétrico resistivo a altas temperaturas. As amostras também foram analisadas por diferentes técnicas como: microscopia eletrônica de varredura com sistema EDS acoplado (MEV/EDS), difração de raios X e simulação termodinâmica. Os resultados obtidos experimentalmente foram condizentes com as simulações termodinâmicas e com os resultados encontrados na literatura.

O mexilhão dourado Limnoperna fortunei é uma espécie invasora que tem causado diversos problemas no ambiente aquático em razão da sua habilidade de formar colônias em estruturas. A espécie adere nas superfícies por filamentos proteicos, causando sérios danos ambientais, sociais e econômicos.O combate à incrustação biológica através do tratamento de superfícies submersas em ambientes de água doce com produtos naturais, em especial os oriundos de algas vermelhas, é o desafio apresentado.Com o banimento, em dimensão mundial, de insumos à base de tributilestanho - TBT na composição de tintas, desde 2008, tratamentos alternativos e ambientalmente adequados ganham maior apelo, considerando os riscos dos produtos alternativos atualmente aplicados. É descrito um conjunto de condições para espécies produtoras de metabólitos secundários com atividade anti-incrustante importante. Portanto, o trabalho tem como objetivo reforçar uma linha de pesquisa ampla dedicada a consolidar informações sobre o potencial de organismos marinhos como produtores de metabólitos secundários (produtos naturais) com atividade anti-incrustante, à luz da produção científica a ser analisada no espaço destinado à apresentação de resultados.

Investigations were conducted by the lndiana Geological Survey for some dry methods of bene-ficiating low-grade gypsum ore. Seventy-two batch and continuous flow tests were performed with a roller mill, rod mill, pebble mill, electronic color sorter, electrostatic separator, and an air separator. Approximately 650 size analyses and 550 chemical analyses were performed during the investigation. Batch samples were tested by the Survey, and most of the continuous flow tests were handled by com-mercial laboratories. INTRODUCTION Although many companies producing gypsum have been interested in dry beneficiation, very little information has been published in the past. One of the most comprehensive investigations was reported by the Canadian Department of Mines.5 Other reports of interest have been published by the Canadian Department of Mines,' the South Australian Department of Mines,2 and the U.S. Bureau of Mines.3 Some beneficiating practices, such as hand picking, selective mining, crushing and screening, milling, and air classifying, were already in use in the Canadian industry prior to MacPherson's investigations.5 MacPherson examined the effect of tabling, air separation, screening, flotation, electrostatic separation, calcining, washing, and various types of milling, in his efforts to eliminate dolomite, limestone, and small amounts of silica and clay from the gypsum ore. RAW MATERIAL Gypsum and anhydrite occur within the lower part of the St. Louis Limestone (Mississippian) in southwestern Indiana. Gypsum in single beds 10 or more ft thick occur at Shoals, Martin County; near Freedom, Owen County; near Bloomfield, Greene County; and in the Devonian strata of LaPorte County. Only the Shoals deposit has been exploited commercially. The western edge of the Shoals deposit is contaminated by a continuous bed of shale, about 1 1/2 to 2 ft thick, near the top of the evaporite and by thin continuous strata or irregular masses of carbonate rock. The low-grade material used in these investigations was obtained from the waste pile of the National Gypsum Co.'s plant at Shoals. The waste ore averaged about 67.4% gypsum and was contaminated by various amounts of shale, dolomite, and limestone. All the material had been previously crushed and screened to minus 1 1/4 to plus 3/8 in. X-ray analyses of powdered, sedimentated, gly-colated, and heat-treated samples of the shale showed that it was composed of slightly structurally disordered illite, Fe-rich chlorite, and very finegrained disseminated silt. The clays and silt were partly cemented with carbonate material. Light-gray argillaceous limestone and gray or brown porous dolomite made up most of the carbonate rock contamination. Crushing Characteristics: The rate unweathered gypsum, carbonate rock, and shale reduce in size was determined by crushing handpicked samples in a rod mill and screening at minus 100 mesh (.0059 in.). Fig. 1 graphically represents the data. These data indicate that carbonate rock should be relatively easy to separate from gypsum, but that shale should be difficult to separate from gypsum by differential crushing. Controlled Samples: Eight rod mill tests of hand-picked samples of mixed gypsum and shale and mixed gypsum and carbonate rock were made. Sample weight and crushing weight were standardized, but the scalping screen size was varied from 3 to 10 mesh (.265 to .0787 in.) in order to obtain the optimum purity and recovery. The data obtained from the tests (see Table I) illustrate that the relatively hard carbonate rock allows appreciable beneficiation (13.6 to 18%), but the low strength gypsum and shale allows only minimal separation (3.1 to 7.5%).* Semi control led Samples: During the investigation considerable slaking of the shale was noted when the ore was subjected to alternate wetting and drying. As demonstrated in laboratory tests, as much as 76% shale can be removed by two cycles of wetting and drying in a 48-hour period with subsequent screening at .265 in. Five ore samples, stockpiled and weathered, were screened, rod-mill crushed and rescreened at .157 or .187 in. with excellent results (Table 11).

As fibras naturais extraídas das folhas do curauá estão entre as mais fortes fibras naturais utilizadas como reforço de compósitos poliméricos para aplicações em engenharia. Tais compósitos, até agora, são limitados em relação às propriedades mecânicas e energia de impacto. Assim o objetivo do presente trabalho é de investigar a possibilidade da melhora da resistência à tração bem como a energia de impacto dos compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçados com fibras de curauá com variados parâmetros de processamento. Os parâmetros observados foram a quantidade de fibras com diâmetro fino e pressão aplicada durante o processamento. Utilizando 60% de fração volumétrica de fibras finas (diâmetro médio variando de 50 à 80 µm) contínuas e alinhadas foi possível se obter resistência à tração superior 200 MPa. Ainda, aplicando-se 30 MPa de pressão durante a cura foram obtidos mais de 270 MPa de resistência a tração. Já para resistência a impacto Izod, uma resistência de 340 J/m foi obtido pelos corpos de prova com entalhe feito em sentido perpendicular ao alinhamento das fibras.

O trabalho tem por objetivo de mostrar uma otimização da performance de sistema de lavagem de gases (conjunto espessador e filtro a vácuo) do Alto Forno de uma siderúrgica localizada no Nordeste, a CSP, Cia Siderúrgica do Pecem. A unidade entrou em operação no ano de 2016, inicialmente com orientações/informações de projeto, tendo muito desvios no controle da turbidez e sólidos suspensos da água da saída do espessador, em função da tecnologia aplicada, que não estava funcionando adequadamente para a realidade da região e ocasionava custo elevado, além de muitos problemas operacionais. A metodologia aplicada baseou-se em teste na planta com produtos químicos, ensaio de laboratório com teste de jarro e análises físico-químicas da água de recirculação. Os resultados obtidos foram excelentes na redução da turbidez e sólidos suspensos, aumento da retirada de lama pelo filtro rotativo, maior tempo de uso da manta dos filtros a vácuo e uma redução de custo com produto químicos e mão de obra, totalizando uma economia significativa em reais/ano.

Em uma linha de decapagem contínua, o tempo de parada da entrada para realização da solda é um dos fatores que mais afeta a produtividade. Estratificando-se o tempo total dessa parada, parte significativa é composta pelo tempo de centelhamento, que é um dos parâmetros fundamentais da soldagem a topo por centelhamento. Adicionalmente, a energia elétrica e o gás natural, consumidos durante o processo de soldagem, contribuem para onerar o custo de transformação da BQD. A fim de reduzir esse tempo e os custos de transformação, avaliou-se, através de análise metalográfica, ensaios de embutimento e dureza, a qualidade de juntas soldas com tempos reduzidos e sem o uso do sistema de depleção de oxigênio, para aços de baixo carbono, de acordo com referências da literatura. Com base nos resultados obtidos, foi possível reduzir o tempo médio de solda em 5s em materiais com espessuras superiores a 2,50mm e eliminar a necessidade do uso de gás natural em todos os aços da GRADE 0, o que representa em torno de 76% das bobinas produzidas nas LDCs.

O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a influência das fases sólidas e líquidas formadas na desfosforação de ferro gusa. As escórias foram feitas a bases de Cal, resíduo de mármore e carepa. Neste trabalho também foi investigada a utilização de fluorita e barrilha nas escórias produzidas, objetivando avaliar as melhores condições para o processo de desfosforação de ferro-gusa. Experimentos em escala laboratorial foram realizados com a adição das misturas desfosforantes iniciais, na forma in natura, a temperatura de 1.400ºC e de composição química conhecida. Para efeitos comparativos das adições, os experimentos foram realizados com agitação mecânica. Foram utilizados cadinhos de MgO para a fusão do ferro-gusa. Amostras do ferro-gusa foram retiradas em intervalos apropriados, para o monitoramento de sua composição química e, após o tratamento, foram obtidas amostras da escória final, sendo comparadas as composições finais as iniciais. Os resultados foram comparados com vista na análise da eficiência das escórias e no processo de desfosforação, com o uso dos programas ThermoCalc e FactSage.

The Minerals Availability Program of the Bureau of Mines conducts cost evaluations of current and potential mineral operations in the United States and foreign countries. The International Mining Cost Indexation System (IMCI) allows data of different time periods within a country to be updated to a common base year for analytical purposes. The IMCI comprises 12 factor cost indexes and an exchange rate series for 96 market economy countries, denominated in both local and U.S. currency. The IMCI for each country contains 12 time series indexes that measure the average annual rate of change in the cost of factor inputs to the mining industry within that country. Mining industry factor cost indexes include wages, plant and equipment, construction and mining materials, power and transportation, and other measures considered to comprise the majority of capital and operating costs. Cost data or proxies are collected in local currency. Index series within each country are constructed separately and indexed on a 1975 base year. The local currency index is converted to a U.S.-dollar-based currency index using an exchange ratio.

The research to be described is directed to the construction of an instrument that detects methane in air. The principle on which it is based is that methane gas absorbs infrared radiation in the wavelength range of about 3.2 to 3.4 micron. Solid state p-n junctions of composition In, .97Ca.03As emitting radiation in a band centered at 3.3 micron were grown by liquid epitaxy on InAs. Fight separate growth cycles and a total of 200 diodes were measured to determine total power, wavelength peak, spectral. half width and reproducibility of the method. In order to compensate for temperature changes, dual emitter systems (one InGaAs, and one InAs diode) mounted on the same TO-5 header were made. These devices were imaged, using a folded optical path cell, on large area InAs detectors, grown by a planar diffusion technique. In the 0-50°C range the primary temperature sensitivity is in the InAs detector rather than in the emitters. Several methods to reduce the overall temperature sensitivity to within acceptable limits were demonstrated. Humidity was shown to have a negligible effect on the measurements.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing quarrying methods and costs at stone quarries throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scrope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a resistência ao crescimento de trinca por fadiga de juntas soldadas de aços inoxidáveis ferríticos do tipo UNS S40910 e UNS S41003, com entalhe na ZTA. Os ensaios de fadiga foram realizados em juntas soldadas com alta e baixa energia de soldagem realizadas pelo processo GMAW, tendo como metal de adição o consumível austenítico ER 308 LSi, e em amostras do metal de base de ambos os aços. Os ensaios foram realizados sob controle de carga com a amplitude de carregamento constante, e razão R entre tensões de 0,1. Os resultados foram obtidos na forma de curvas (da/dN) vs. ?K, com caracterização das regiões I e II do crescimento de trinca por fadiga. Analisou-se também os aspectos microestruturais e fratográficos por intermédio de microscopia ótica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura, respectivamente, como suporte para se justificar o comportamento sob fadiga das amostras. Embora os dois aços tenham comportamento distinto, pode-se concluir que as juntas soldadas não apresentaram efeito do aporte térmico, não sendo influenciados pelas alterações microestruturais existentes na ZTA.

Os processos de redução direta utilizam-se de gases redutores (CO e H2) para redução do ferro e produção do DRI. A geração deste gás se dá através de reforma de metano que pode ser feita em um reformador, ou dentro do reator de redução com o DRI como catalizador. O último caso ocorre nos processos auto reformadores. A cinética da reforma de metano com H2O catalisada por DRI foi estudada em temperaturas entre 875°C e 1050°C. Os resultados mostraram que até conversão de metano de 0,50, a reforma é controlada por reação química catalítica conforme mecanismo proposto por Münster e Grabke(3,4). Acima desta conversão, o mecanismo não foi determinado. O uso de gás com potencial abaixo do limite para carburação (CH4/H2O < 1) resultou em DRI sem carbono. Com gás de potencial igual ou acima do limite, a carburação do DRI ocorreu e no caso do gás similar ao do processo industrial a carburação impediu a reação catalítica de reforma.

Surface tension, density and viscosity coefficient of acidic copper sulfate solutions simulating electrolyte solution for electrolytic production of copper have been measured and are summarized as a function of the solution composition and temperature. Nickel sulfatc is taken to be a representative coexisting sulfate that affects the physical properties of the copper sulfate electrolyte solution. The sulfates in the solutions, including sulfuric acid, increase the physical properties under consideration. Gelatin, representing organic additives for electrolyte solution, was found to sensitively affect the surface tension of the solution at low concentration of up to 200mgIL. The surface tension was markedly lowered by the addition of gelatin and the increasing concentration of gelatin led to a more pronounced decrease in the observed values. The surface tension gradually increases with time after addition of gelatin and the increase is enhanced by higher acid concentration and higher temperature. The observed change in the surface tension is considered to reflect the preferential adsorption of gelatin to the bubble-solution interface and the decomposition of gelatin due to hydrolysis to form various molecules having smaller molecular weights.

The technology of the liquid-phase reduction process known as Romelt was developed in the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys in 1979. The pilot plant was constructed at the Novolipetsky Steel Works (Russia) in 1984. Investigations into processing zinc-containing blast oxygen furnace dust and slag from the Lead and Zinc Works at the pilot Romelt plant proved the perspective of using this technology for processing zinc and lead-containing materials. In this article, the description of Romelt technology, basic technological information of trials at the Romelt plant using zinc-containing materials, compositions of charging materials, metal, slag, gas and dust are presented. The influence of flue gas composition on the composition of zinccontaining dust is shown.

Blaine number has long been used to evaluate the pelletising ability of iron concentrate in the industry. Much information and practical data are available about the effect of Blaine number on pelletising efficiency of different concentrate types. But not many researchers have focused on the effect of Blaine increasing method on pelletising behaviour of coarse concentrates. In this paper the effect of two different grinding methods (i.e. HPGR and Ball Mill) on physicochemical properties of coarse magnetic concentrate green and fired pellets were investigated. Microstructural studies by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) showed that the concentrate for which the Blaine number had been increased through HPGR grinding, has flake-like morphology. In contrast, increasing the Blaine number through ball mill grinding results in more granular particles. Two samples were prepared using HPGR and ball mill. The Blaine number of the HPGR product and ball mill product were 900 cm2.gr-1 and 1200 cm2.gr-1 respectively. The results revealed that pellet properties of this HPGR product are comparable to that of the ball mill product; this is due to the fact that the flake-like morphology leads to enhanced pelletising performance of coarse magnetite concentrates. Central Colliery was developed to exploit large underground reserves in the German Creek lease. It was planned from the outset as a retreating longwall operation and is the first longwall mine in Queensland. Longwall mining is not new to Australia but all previous experience has been confined to the coalfields of New South Wales. There was no precedent for longwall extraction in the markedly different geological setting of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. Various investigations were thus carried out during the initial development of Central Colliery, prior to the installation of the longwall, to ascertain the geotechnical characteristics of the coal seam and the adjacent strata and to predict the performance of the heading and pillar design as mining proceeds to depth. Laboratory tests showed the coal to be weak with an unconfined compressive strength of 9.6 MN/m2. Site inspection and geophysical correlation revealed a shear zone and extensive intraformational shear planes in the seam. The latter were found to exert a controlling influence on rib reaction in the headings. This behaviour was predicted by finite element modelling of the development headings which indicated that mining induced stresses in the coal would be relieved by block movement of the ribs. A chain pillar width versus depth curve was established for yielding pillar design based on empirical and computational methods. This gave pillar widths from 25m to 48m over the proposed depth range of 150m to 300m. Finite element modelling of the 25m pillars chosen for the first gateroads confirmed the overall stability of the design but suggested that rib spall could be significant in the adjacent tailgate. This paper describes the development of an approach to sustainable development for application at the feasibility study stage for a proposed bauxite mine near the community of Aurukun, south of Weipa on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. The general environment for development was complex in all dimensions. In particular, the socio-demographic profile of the Aurukun community (population 1200) characterised it as being amongst the most disadvantaged communities in Australia. The traditional owners of the area, the Wik and Wik-Way people, were at the forefront in the efforts of Indigenous people in Australia to secure land rights over the past 30 years, and they had previous experience negotiating an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (the Western Cape Communities Coexistence Agreement) with Rio Tinto Alcan, the operators of the Weipa bauxite mine. Through this they had shown a well-founded sense of entitlement with respect to the development of resources on their traditional land. The Queensland State Government had recently cancelled an existing mining lease over the bauxite resource as the holder of the tenement had not fulfilled the terms of a development agreement that had been in place for 30 years. The Government was anxious to avoid any future æbankingÆ of the resource, and had decided to offer tenure to the resource on an international competitive basis, subject to the requirements of the Commonwealth Native Title Act 1993. This would require a negotiation process with traditional owners and potentially involve companies with whom the traditional owners had no existing relationship (typically developed during the projectÆs exploration phase) and who possibly had no project development experience in Australia. As well, the State Government envisaged an approach to development that drew on the significant work that industry and other stakeholders had undertaken over the previous ten to 15 years, commencing with the mining, minerals and sustainable development (MMSD) process. This work was aimed at rectifying acknowledged deficiencies with industry recognition of stakeholder interests, in particular with respect to environmental management and socioeconomic development. The approach adopted aimed to define the strategic community interests and sustainable development outcomes to which the development of the resource would be expected to contribute, and to embody these within an easily usable management structure that could be applied to each stage of project development from feasibility study through to mine closure. The logical framework (AusAID, 2006; ICMM, 2005) was the management tool utilised to order the identified interests and desired outcomes. The structure included components aligned with the key areas of development interest expressed by the community, and the initial baseline sustainable development plan (SDP) developed established component objectives, outcomes, indicative outputs and activities for the feasibility stage of the project. This established an objective framework to guide potential bidders when developing their response to the State GovernmentÆs Request for Proposal. The paper will describe the evolution of the competitive process and the parallel process for development of the SDP. While the institutional environment was politically and socially complex, the use of simple visual representations of the environment and the analysis and ordering of issues, objectives and criteria through methods such as stakeholder analysis and the logical framework approach, enable the development of a dialogue on the contribution that the development of a mining project can make to sustainable community development, and for the development of an agreed program of community support to capture the contribution. The use of the logical framework was found to have good functionality for plan development. Achieving plan outcomes though, is highly dependent on the skill of key project personnel in facilitation, team building, conflict resolution and leadership, as well as their ability to influence the behaviour of key stakeholders with the capacity and authority to require the integration of local economic development criteria in to key project development decisions.

Allis-Chalmers has combined a new heat transfer device, called the ROLLER GRATE, with a unique processing scheme, resulting in the ROLLER GRATE Oil Shale Processing System of Allis-Chalmers. In order to test both the process and the equipment, a batch Process Development Unit (PDU) ROLLER GRATE retort was designed and built. This unit vas designed with the flexibility to process shale over a wide range of test conditions in order to demonstrate the attributes of the oil-shale processing system. Instrumentation on the PDU and extensive sampling of the effluent streams permitted the PDU test data to be used in the design and scale-up of the process. Over 30 tests have been conducted with Colorado shale, and over 25 tests have been run with an Indiana shale. In addition, rests have been run with California and Utah tar sands.

This Section describes four alternative methods for load testing of drilled shafts: high strain dynamic test (HSDT), rapid load test, static load test, and bottom load test. Until recently, static load tests were the only method available for verifying the capacity of a drilled shaft. However, because many drilled shafts carry very high design loads, the static load test was prohibitively expensive. The alternative methods, HSDT, rapid load testing, and bottom load testing are gaining acceptance because of their lower cost and faster implementation. However, these different methods do not necessarily yield the same results. This section describes the load testing methods and the differences that may occur when interpreting the test results.
