The purpose of tins paper is not to present new date on the pressure losses due to bends and chances of area in mine openings through which air flows, but rather to correlate existing data, determined mainly on small duct systems and expressed in a variety of ways, according to uniform methods that facilitate their use in pressure-loss computations. These are required in such, air-flow problems as determining the quantity that will flow through is mine openings under a certain pressure difference or, conversely, the pressure difference that will be required to maintain a certain rate of flow. Air flowing through h ducts, such as mine airways, encounters resistance to flow due to interference of the individual air streams with each other caused by the wall surfaces. The result is that part of the kinetic energy of the flowing stream is converted to heat; and constant renewal of the kinetic energy from the total energy of the flow is required to maintain it. This process manifests itself by a decrease of the total pressure (static pressure plus velocity pressure; of the air in the direction of flow; in order that flow pray occur, there must necessarily be a differences in total pressure between the two cads of the air-ay equivalent to the pressure losses occasioned by the flow, which automatically adjusts itself in magnitude to the pressure difference maintained.

Minerals beneath the surface may be made the subject of separate ownership either by a grant of the minerals by the owner of the land or by a grant of the land excepting the minerals, and thereby an estate in fee simple is created in the minerals, as corporeal things real. Colby, In re, Iowa, 169 Northwestern 443, p. 444. DEEDS EXCHANGING DIFFERENT MINERALS-RIGHTS OF PARTIES. The lands of two adjoining owners were underlaid with cement rock and clay at a depth of about 100 feet from the surface and with coal veins some 600 feet below the surface. By an exchange of deeds one of the land owners conveyed to the other the cement rock and clay with the right to mine and remove the same without entering upon the surface, but the deed contained no covenant not to injure the surface. The other deed conveyed the coal seam and so much of the rock and other minerals just above and below the coal as might be required in connection with the mining and removing of the coal, together with the right to mine and remove the same, and the adja- cent rock, clay, and other minerals, without entering upon or injuring the surface, with one immaterial exception. The deeds do not define the word "surface" and neither expressly nor by implication did they secure to the coal owner the right to subside the overlying cement rock; but the implication is to the contrary, as the deed gives the right to mine and remove coal without entering upon or injuring the surface. The provision that the coal owner should not enter upon or injure the surface amounts to a clause that the coal mine. shall not be worked so as to let down the surface and this does not create any inconsistency with the provision giving the right to mine and carry away the coal.

The mine of the year 2020 will need to be based on a new way of mining. It will employ technology in a paradigm that assumes responsibility for sustainable development: taking account not only economic but also ecological and social issues. This will require a holistic approach to mine design and planning, considering all controlling factors and impacts (technical, economic, environmental and social). A national collaborative strategy is required to address the several options that exist for the development and application of 2020 mining technology. Key issues in implementing 2020 mining technology will also relate to human resources, in terms of employment, skills and education. A need exists to proactively prepare for 2020 through development of a comprehensive education and training strategy.

Much attention and publicity has been given, during recent years, to grinding, classification, flotation, and thickening. The various technical papers, and symposiums held to discuss these important phases of milling, have contributed to a better under- standing of the fundamental principles and operating variables involved. Another important part of milling- to the flotation operator-is a treatment step to which frequently too little attention is given-" conditioning," or the treatment the ground mineral pulp receives before it enters the flotation machines. Conditioning" is a hackneyed and frequently misused term, commonly employed to describe the pretreatment of surfaces of minerals in ore pulps or mill pr6ducts prior to froth flotation. In general, such pretreatment is for the purpose of changing the flotation characteristics of these mineral surfaces to enable them to respond in some desired predetermined manner when subjected to flotation. Taggartl states that the function of conditioning is "either to insure selective collector coating of one mineral species while another species is not; or to take such steps as will compensate for departure there from."

As TRC (tensões residuais compressivas) induzidas por shot-peening (SP) podem ser relaxadas e redistribuídas sob cargas cíclicas mecânicas, térmicas e termomecânicas. O objetivo desta pesquisa é avaliar a redução da TRC por SP através da difração de raios-X fast in-situ (DRXin-situ) na superfície do aço SAE 4140 durante tempo (t) de patamar de t [s] = 54000 em três diferentes temperaturas (T) de T [K] = 423,16; 523,16 e 623,16. É investigada a relaxação de TRC por cargas térmicas, mantendo as amostras, previamente tratadas por SP, em um forno com diferentes temperaturas de patamar, enquanto são medidos os valores de TR ao longo do t. Foi construída uma câmara de vácuo acoplada a um difratômetro de raios-X. Obteve-se 100 % cobertura por SP, as TRC aliviaram com o aumento da temperatura de patamar e o tempo. A maior variação de TRC ocorreu nos primeiros minutos de ensaio, no restante do tempo a TR permaneceu constante. A macrodureza superficial e FWHM das amostras diminuíram com o aumento da temperatura de patamar ao longo do tempo. A macrodureza superficial das amostras e FWHM são maiores após o tratamento de SP, antes do aquecimento. O FWHM reduziu ao longo do tempo com mesmo comportamento da queda da TRC, correspondente e proporcional à redução da TRC. A energia de ativação do processo, calculado pela função Zener-Wert-Avrami não foi coerente com a autodifusão do Fe-a. Logo, é recomendada a repetição para verificar o resultado. Com base nos dados obtidos, se pode concluir que esta pesquisa possui relevância industrial.

February, 1926) The Pioneer mining district, better known as the Superior district, from its principal town, is located in Pinal County in south-central Arizona about 80 miles east of Phoenix and 22 miles west of Miami. The region embraces a, confused series of mountain ranges of moderate height but precipitous slopes, between which lie irregular valleys filled with alluvial detritus. The average elevation is about 2800 ft. in the valleys and the summits of the ranges reach 2000 ft. above this. Superior is situated on the north bank of Queen Creek where it emerges from one of those ranges into a more or less basin-shaped valley. The drainage of Queen Creek is to the southwest and the flood waters spread out and lose themselves in the desert northeast of Florence, the county seat of Pinal County. Esse trabalho tem por objetivo, propor a utilização de um dispositivo, criado na UFPE, para estudar a fadiga funcional e mecânica num atuador de Ti-Ni com memória de forma. Inicialmente, fios de Ti-Ni com efeito memória de forma, com 0,89 mm de diâmetro, foram submetidos a um tratamento térmico de homogeneização por 24 horas a temperatura de 500ºC e têmpera em água a 25ºC. Posteriormente, os mesmos foram submetidas a calorimetria diferencial de varredura para obtenção das temperaturas de transformação. De posse desses dados, foram confeccionados atuadores com a forma de mola helicoidal. Utilizando o dispositivo proposto, esses atuadores foram submetidos às deformações cíclicas, com expansão total de 10mm, num banho térmico programável, a temperatura constante de 85ºC, na condição supereslástica, essa etapa é denominada neste trabalho de ciclo rápido. Com o objetivo de analisar o efeito dessas deformações cíclicas sobre as temperaturas de transformação e a capacidade de recuperação de forma dos atuadores foi realizada um segunda etapa, aqui denominada de ciclo lento. Nessa etapa, os atuadores foram solicitados à esforços de tração equivalentes a tensão de cisalhamento no fio de 70 MPa, dentro do intervalo de temperatura entre 15°C e 85°C, e tiveram o deslocamento e as temperaturas de transformação monitorados por um sensor LVDT e por um termopar respectivamente. Os ciclos rápidos e lentos são intercalados periodicamente. Dessa forma, observou-se a influência da ciclagem termomecânica na degradação do efeito de memória de forma.

Magnésio e suas ligas são promissores para armazenagem de hidrogênio devido à alta eficiência, boa reversibilidade, baixo custo e segurança. Entretanto, hidretos à base de Mg apresentam cinéticas de ab/dessorção lentas, temperaturas de operação muito altas, e alta reatividade ao ar para aplicação práticas. A moagem de alta energia (HEBM) combinada com o uso de catalisadores têm produzido nanocompósitos à base de Mg com cinéticas mais rápidas. Recentemente, processos termomecânicos e de deformação plástica severa (SPD) têm sido investigados para produzir nanocompósitos em volume com melhor resistência ao ar (processo de ativação) e que podem ser facilmente fabricados em escala industrial. No presente trabalho, amostras 2Mg-Fe foram misturadas com CNT (0-5%p.) por HEBM, e em seguida processadas por extrusão a quente (termomecânico) a 300oC e/ou laminação a frio (SPD) a temperatura ambiente. Pós com 0%p a 5%p. de CNT mostraram padrões de DRX muito similares indicando similares nanoestruturas. Todas as amostras puderam ser laminadas, mas somente amostras com menos que 2,0%p. de CNT puderam ser extrudadas, e submetidas pela combinação de extrusão-laminação. As propriedades cinéticas, medidas pelos métodos Sieverts e DSC, foram piores para as extrudadas, intermediárias para as extrudadas/laminadas e melhores para as somente laminadas. Nessas últimas, os picos de Bragg mostraram baixa intensidade e textura favorável ao longo de (002) no Mg, que possivelmente explicam esses resultados. Quanto maiores foram as quantidades de CNT melhores foram as propriedades (cinética e temperatura de dessorção).

A Unidade Niquelândia da Votorantim Metais possui 9 fornos multi andares usados para a redução de minérios lateríticos com o uso de monóxido de carbono e hidrogênio como agentes redutores. Cada forno possui 10 câmaras de combustão para geração destes gases que trabalham em contra-corrente com o minério alimentado pelo topo do forno. Já utilizado como combustível óleo A2 incorporado ao minério bem como sua combustão em câmaras. O trabalho consiste na substituição do óleo por uma emulsão de combustíveis líquidos e sólidos a fim de flexibilizar a matriz energética e promover redução do cash cost sem queda na eficiência operacional. A utilização industrial da emulsão teve início em 2006 através da sua incorporação ao minério alimentado na proporção de 19% de coque de petróleo e 81% de óleo A2 em poder calorífico e em 2014 esta mistura alcançou a proporção de 39% de coque e 61% de óleo A1. Em paralelo e após testes de combustão em planta piloto, foram realizados testes industriais de queima também nas câmaras de combustão em dezembro de 2012. Com o bom desempenho, em dezembro de 2013, 14 das 90 câmaras já estavam nesta condição com previsão de 20 câmaras até junho de 2014 otimizando a capacidade da estação de óleo+coque. Com isto a substituição (%) global dos fornos em poder calorífico avançou de 6,38% em 2011 para 16,12% em 2014 acumulados até abril. Com uma nova estação existe a possibilidade de operar 90 câmaras nesta condição e chegar a um valor de 39% de substituição global.

This study compiles data on the zircon resources of the Pacific Northwest States, Alaska, and California, to determine the productive capability of industrial concerns to make ductile zirconium and hafnium, and to investigate markets for the nonmetallic products of zircon. West coast zircon resources are large but mostly marginal to submarginal. Development of a stable and profitable zircon mining industry on the west coast will depend upon recovery and utilization of the other associated heavy minerals needed by regional and national markets. The west coast has the only completely integrated facility for processing zircon sand to reactor-grade zirconium and hafnium and for making fabricated products from these metals. The future of the zirconium metal industry appears to be good because of increased use of the metal for nuclear propulsion and power-generating plants.

The production of coal from underground mines in Washington declined during the recent war owing to shortage of manpower, and coal was shipped to the Pacific Northwest from mines in the Rocky Mountain region. The movement of this coal into Washington required the use of railroad equipment that otherwise could have been used for transporting war materiel and personnel. Strip mining uses a minimum of manpower, and the development of coal areas in the Pacific Northwest that can be mined by the strip method should increase production in the area, thus releasing railroad equipment from the necessity of transporting coal long distances and also providing consumers with a lower-cost product. The development of a strip mine to supply the demand at low cost requires a large investment in heavy equipment. In order that the fixed charges due to large investment in plant and equipment may be kept at a minimum, large reserves of coal must be proved. A reconnaissance of an area near Toledo, Lewis County, Wash., indicated a large bed of lignite that could be mined by strip methods. The area is approximately midway between Portland, Oreg., and Tacoma, Wash. (refer to fig. 1), and the opening of a large mine in the area would supply fuel to these and other nearby centers.

D. A. Dahlstrom—Mr. Falconer has done an admirable job of proving the adaptability of the cyclone to the beneficiation of a very difficult size range in the preparation of coal. The addition of the cyclone to other coarser size methods makes it economically feasible for the coal operator to rigorously control his marketed products at a high and uniform quality level down to the 48 and 100-mesh size. Furthermore, it should be pointed out that by utilizing the cyclone as a deslimer or classifier the —3 200-mesh fraction, usually containing large percentages of undesirable material, can also be quickly and cheaply removed from the clean coal. Advantages of such a step are several: (1) Reduction of ash content, especially where clays and slimes are serious. (2) lower moisture content of the final coal. (3) easier mechanical and thermal de-watering of the fine coal due to higher cake and bed permeabilities. The author has indicated that adjustable control means should be installed on the cyclone operating on a heavy-media slurry. This also holds true for the cyclone acting as classifier, deslimer or preliminary dewatering agent and is worthy of special emphasis. Such controls, while not necessarily automatic, must be simple, rapidly adjustable, and require a minimum of attention. Three methods available to the operator are (1) throttling valve on the feed line, (2) back pressure valve on the overflow, and (3) adjustable diameter underflow nozzles. The first two, while fulfilling the specifications, suffer the disadvantage of restricting capacity if severe throttling is necessary. The third method has little effect on capacity and easily maintains an underflow of correct moisture content. Several designs are possible, but two find the widest application. The first was developed by Robert Piros of The Truax-Traer Coal Co. and uses a simple casting containing two holders for underflow nozzles which can be rotated about an axis parallel to the cyclone centerline. These holders retain the underflow nozzle flush with the conical section walls. When a change in nozzle diameter is required, the new size is placed in the spare holder and rotated into place. A second design utilizes a soft rubber cylindrical tube which is compressed or released from three sides, causing the inner diameter of the tube to decrease or increase. "IntroductionThe Kitsault molybdenum mine is located 600 m above sea level on Lime Creek at the head of the inlet of Alice Arm, 140 km northeast of Prince Rupert, British Columbia (Fig. 1). The area of the mine is characterized by rugged topography and deeply incised creeks which drain into the Portland Canal - Observatory Inlet fjord system. Access is by air service or boat from Prince Rupert, or by secondary road from Terrace.HistoryThe deposit was first staked in 1911, at which time the main feature of interest was a polymetallic vein with values in silver located southeast of the molybdenum deposit (Woodcock and Carter, 1976). Turnbull (1916) was the first to describe the extensive zone of crisscross quartz stringers with Mo~ on the banks of Lime Creek which, although it clearly had the potential to contain a major deposit, was not then believed to be of commercial value.Following sporadic work through the 1920s and early 1930s, the ground lay idle unti11959 when Kennco Explorations (Western) Ltd. commenced a program of systematic diamond drilling on the stockwork-type mineralization adjacent to Lime Creek. In late 1964, Kennco announced the presence of an orebody of 36 million tonnes averaging 0.230Jo Mo~ which was to be put into production at a rate of 5450 tonnes per day under a new subsidiary, British Columbia Molybdenum Ltd., at a forecasted capital cost of $20 million (revised to $30 million).Between January 1968 and April 1972, 10.4 million kg of molybdenum were produced from 9.3 million tonnes of ore, at an average mill recovery of 90%, and with an average mill head grade of 0.206% Mo~. The ore was mined in an open pit with a waste to ore stip ratio of 1.5 to 1. The. operation was terminated in 1972 due to weak molybdenum prices and escalating costs.In May 1973, the deposit was purchased by Climax Molybdenum Corporation of British Columbia, Limited and in 1979 transferred to affiliate Amax of Canada Limited. In early 1979, following completion of detailed feasibility studies, Arnax commenced construction of the 10 900 tonne per day Kitsault mine and mill complex based on a mineable open pit reserve of 95 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.192% Mo~, sufficient for a mine life of 25 years. The original capital cost estimate was $143 million; it subsequently escalated to approximately $200 million."

Drying operation can have a major importance in a mineral processing undertaking. The proper sizing of dryers can ensure the specified dewatering level without energy wastage. However, often the sizing of fluidized bed is done disregarding the actual residence time distribution (RTD) of the particles inside the reactor. In this case it is usual to adopt the average residence time as a design criterion. In this work, we have quantified the effect of residence time distribution on drying, ensuring that a previously adopted fraction of the particles remains inside the reactor for the required time lapse needed for drying. Design criteria such as particulate flow rate and drying time, taking into account the statistical distribution of residence time was studied, matching the thermodynamic and fluid dynamic aspects of the drying process. Experimental tests carried out have confirmed the RTD for a teetering bed as the same for a canonical ideal mixing system. Although the fluidized bed volume using the proposed formulation was higher than that found for the average time based procedure, the efficiency gain in drying has proven advantageous.

"Automatic driving at high speed of an underground truck was tested at Brunswick mine in September 1995. Modifications to the truck included: a remote interface to control actuators, front and back video cameras to follow a roof mounted optical guide and proportional hydraulic controls on the steering.The mathematical model of the hydraulic system was adjusted using least square regression. The steering data, used in calculating the regression parameters, were acquired from the moving truck. The automatic steering control used three measured variables: lateral deviation, angular deviation and steering angle. Lateral deviations are obtained using the cameras, which are in continuous view of the guide, while steering angles are acquired from an extensiometer placed at the articulation point of the vehicle. Gain scheduling was used to compensate for vehicle speed and available hydraulic flow. Non-linear characteristics of the modeled hydraulic system were offset using open loop compensation.Speeds up to 23 km/h in forward direction and 13 km/h in reverse were achieved deviaduring continuous testing along one of the mine’s production drifts. Proportional steering was essential in achieving high speeds, as it enabled more precise positioning of the vehicle’s steering direction while reducing the abuses on cylinder and cylinder pins via diminished oscillations about the optical guide at high speeds."

Computer visualization can be employed in industry as an aid to the understanding of the complex interactions between variables encountered in production. The examples of ingot casting of rimming steel and that of hot rolling of low carbon steel strip are presented. Both processes are mathematically modeled, and their results are presented in a graphical way. Such models have been proven to be an asset in quality improvements and increase of productivity as the personnel involved get a better understanding of their job.

This paper reports the results of solution calorimetry conducted to obtain the heats of formation of crystalline FeS04?6.952H20 and FeS04?1.008H20, from. which values were derived for the stoichiometric compounds FeS04?H20 and FeS04?H20. Also included are derived values of the free energies of formation and dehydration. This work was undertaken primarily to fill a need for data for pure, easily obtainable ferrous compounds that are suitable for use as calorimetric intermediates, The ferrous sulfate hydrates meet the essential requirements for this use.

Before entering into a discussion of wet washing, it will be advisable to consider the various phases and conditions sur- rounding the problem of cleaning coal from the Corbin mines. Corbin is located in the south-east part of British Columbia in the Crowsnest Pass district, about 35 miles north of the International boundary and about three miles west of the Flat-head Range of the Rocky Mountains. It is reached by a rail-way, about thirteen miles long, from McGillivray, B.C., a point on the Crowsnest branch of the Canadian Pacific rail-way, owned and operated by the Eastern British Columbia Railway Company, a subsidiary company of Corbin Coals, Limited. The coal is assumed to occur here, as principally elsewhere in the Rockies, in the Kootenai series of the Lower Cretaceous, but owing to the disturbed condition of the surrounding country and, therefore, the magnitude of the geological study involved, this has never been definitely worked out. The coal is of the usual Crowsnest high-grade steam-coal, containing from 9 to 12 per cent. of ash, but appears to have 4 to 5 per cent. less volatile combustible matter than other coals being mined in this district, a representative analysis being about as follows:
