A new process of direct solvent extraction of nickel from sulfuric acid leach solutions of low grade and complicated nickel resources using a novel extractant HBL110 was proposed. The basic performance of new organic system was investigated and the continuous pilot plant and the industrial test were conducted. The results indicated that the extractant of HBL110 can be used to directly extract nickel selectively over iron, aluminum, manganese, magnesium, calcium and chromium from sulfuric acid leach solutions. The loaded organic solution can be easily stripped using dilute H2SO4 solutions. Both kinetics of extraction and stripping of nickel were fast. The continuous pilot plant test with the sulfuric acid leach solution of laterite containing 6.22g/L Ni2+, 14.1g/L Fe3+, 0.73g/L Fe2+, 33.9g/L Mg2+, 1.58g/L Al3+, 0.495g/L Ca2+, 0.97g/L Mn2+ and 0.5g/L Cr3+ as feed in mixer-settlers showed that the process had run stably with 98% recovery of nickel. The concentration of nickel in strip liquors reached as high as 50 g/L while the removals of Fe3+, Fe2+, Mg2+, Al3+, Ca2+, Mn2+ and Cr3+ were 98.5%, 91.5%, 99.95%, 99.8%, 99.1%, 98.6% and 99.5%, respectively. The industrial test with the sulfuric acid leach solution of electroplating sludge containing 11.5g/L Ni2+, 2.68g/L Fe3+, 7.54g/L Cr3+, 0.61g/L Mg2+, 2.09g/L Al3+, 0.68g/L Ca2+, 0.022g/L Mn2+ and 0.154g/L SiO2 as feed in mixer-settlers also showed that the process had operated successfully with 99.5% recovery of nickel. The concentration of nickel in strip liquors reached 42.7 g/L while the removals of Fe3+, Cr3+, Mg2+, Al3+, Ca2+, Mn2+ and SiO2 were 99.2%, 99.77%, 99.73%, 99.56%, 99.57%, 98.51% and 98.75%, respectively. The new process exhibited big advantages of short flow sheet, high recovery of nickel, high removal of impurities, low chemical reagent consumption and low cost. Application of this process in industry is expected to make important impact on the extraction of nickel from sulfuric acid leach solutions and to deliver good environmental and economical benefits.

The mining activity results in environmental impact and thus requires the adoption of techniques to minimize its effects. The rock blasting process is required to break up and move the rock enabling the haulage of the material, however, it might also cause undesirable effects such as flyrock, overbreak, excessive ground vibration or air-blast at the neighboring communities and damage to civil or geological structures located nearby. The Serra Sul mine, commonly referred to as S11D project, has obligations to preserve two natural tropical montane lakes and several maximum relevance natural cavities whose legal preservation radius represents constraints to the mine development and operation. Controlling measures are undertaken to ensure preservation of the cavities, especially during rock blasting stage, with limitations of the maximum instantaneous charge (MIC) and ground vibration control. The demand for high productivity and the large areas with hundreds of blastholes to charge are challenging factors to the charge control. This work presents the development and field application of a map for limiting explosive charges in the rock blasting process at the Serra Sul mine, used for the definition of maximum charges according to the blast location, ensuring the preservation and compliance with the defined ground vibration limits for each cavity. The map is applied at the mine for every blast and when there is a charge constraint, the map helps to define the areas with different charging profiles in the field contributing to higher charging productivity.

Sanes are utilized to make molds for metal castings in the foundry industry. Approximately a half ton of sand is disposed of for each ton of metal cast in this country. The purpose of this investigation was to study and develop a process to separate chromite sand and silica sand from reclaimed sands for a steel foundry. Physical separations were utilized to yield silica and chromite sands with desirable molding properties. Several different separation methods, including electrostatic, magnetic, and various gravitational approaches were examined. Experimental results are presented. A method was developed to separate chromite sand from silica sand after mechanical or thermal reclamation. The reclaimed sands are passed through a rare earth magnetic separator to separate chromite sand and magnetic impurities from non-magnetic silica sand. Chromite sand can be recovered from magnetic silica sand or magnetic impurities very effectively using a wet concentrating table. The applicabilities of the separation methods are discussed.

Molten Salt electrolytic processes offer unique opportunities to extract and refine metals where gaseous or metallothermic reduction, hydro metallurgical extraction and aqueous electrolytic methods are thermodynamically constrained. Production of aluminum and magnesium by molten salt electrolysis are well known commercial processes. Several other reactive metals, such as lanthanides and actinides, as well as beryllium and calcium, make use of molten salt processing for extraction and refining. This presentation describes the science of molten salt chemistry and electrochemistry for winning and refining of several metals. In addition, recovery of metals from waste process salts by molten salt reduction as well as oxidation have been discussed. Material issues in design of molten salt reactors have been included. Various applications have been presented through case studies. Experimental data have been included to justify the suitability as well as limitations of these specific processes.

This report describes an experimental method for determining parameters for the rate of reaction of CO2 with solid carbon. The method involves the simulation of a flow reactor by a mathematical model based on a hypothetical multistage reactor which permits calculation of the analyses of effluent gas and carbon consumed as functions of the flow rate and duration of the reaction. The method is applied to experimental data on the reaction of coke with CO2 in fluidized-bed and fixed-bed flow reactors. A method is described whereby two parameters may be determined simultaneously. The method involves a reiterative procedure that finds the values of the parameters that minimize the sum of squares of deviation between calculated and observed analyses of the effluent gas.

Mining operations, whether new or existing, are constantly looking for ways to maximize production and improve energy efficiency, while keeping the footprint required to a minimum. The Nordberg MP1250 cone crusher was designed with these three goals in mind. A series of side-by-side evaluations comparing an MP1250 to an MP1000 were completed at two Freeport-McMoRan operations. The first evaluation began October 2009 in a tertiary position and the second began March 2010 in a secondary position, where it remains in full production today. Utilizing 25% higher power capacity than the existing MP1000 tertiary crushers, the MP1250 had 29% higher capacity and 17% lower specific energy, adjusted for differences in feed and product size. The MP1250 compared to the existing MP1000 secondary crushers achieved 30% higher capacity at a slightly reduced specific energy, while achieving a finer product. The MP1250?s higher capacity and energy efficiency may have application in many crushing plants. Depending on site specific economic factors, greenfield projects may benefit from a smaller footprint and less ancillary equipment, whereas brownfield projects may benefit from higher capacity or a finer product within the same footprint.

"In recent years, the recycling magnesium metallurgy has developed new types of alloys, some of which exhibiting special electrochemical characteristics. Their application has found a fertile field in the energy conversion technologies. The paper introduces some technologic data on the recycling of aeronautical parts and scrap materials generated from the disassembling of magnesium alloy components, attempting to also solve the recycling of magnesium painted parts. The approach is meant to establish a superior quality method for recycling discarded parts or the excess of re-melting material in order to reduce environmental impact and costs. Magnesium-base alloys used as anodic materials are characterized by a high uniformity of the structural properties as well as by superior electrochemical performances, as compared to the ""classically"" used materials: Zn, Pb, etc. In nonconventional applications of magnesium alloys used as sacrificial anodes working in seawater, special alloying elements contribute to improving anodic processes. The influence of these alloying elements on magnesium sacrificial anodes was studied. It was found that the use of recycled materials in anode manufacture could reduce the Mg alloy cost by as much as up to 75% of the cost for virgin material, including the costs for the entire sequence of collection and transportation from a molding factory to a refinery, re-melting and composition adjustment.1. IntroductionMagnesium alloys are valuable materials because they exhibit low density, good forming and machining qualities, particular electrochemical properties and have a high recycling potential. There exists a false idea about the high costs of the use of magnesium alloys, partly justified by the lack of secondary materials suppliers and the insufficient knowhow in the diverse user industries to provide for an efficient substitution of conventional magnesium alloys for multipurpose applications. These circumstances have lately spurred the magnesium industry to develop new alloys and coatings and to improve processing techniques [1]. As a result, magnesium supply has greatly expanded and so have the research and development efforts to achieve complete recycling of Mg alloys.In consumer markets, magnesium is frequently selected because it helps reduce enery consumption. For example, an equal volume part made of magnesium is 23% the weight of a steel part and 64% the weight of an aluminium part."

A revised and expanded edition of a previous paper** dealing with reactions of calcium and magnesium oxides and hydroxides with pulverized coal fly ash is presented. Lime-fly ash specimens were cured at constant temperature and subjected to X-ray diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, pozzolanic reactivity tests, and microscopical investigations. Bars of limefly ash were subjected to cycles of wetting and drying, and measurements of length change were recorded. A discussion of variations within and among types of lime and types of fly ash is presented. The nature of the pozzolanic reaction is reviewed, particularly as related to compounds which are used up and formed during the aging process. The relationship between the pozzolanic reaction and the resultant physical properties of the mixtures is examined.

In the 1953 National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest, 58 teams from 9 States participated, 14 teams from 6 States in mine rescue and 47 teams from 9 States in first aid. Three of the teams were combination teams in that the same team participated in both the mine rescue and first-aid contests. The States represented and the number of teams from each State are shown in table 1. This contract final report summarizes the design, fabrication and testing of canopy air curtain devices under Bureau of Mines Contract H0232067. The canopy air curtain device is designed to reduce the level of respirable dust exposure to a continuous mining machine operator while having a minimum effect on operator safety, mobility and comfort and being compatible with mining equipment. This contract was devoted to the development of a device which utilizes an invisible curtain of air to envelope a mining machine operator's breathing zone with filtered air to provide respiratory protection. Various concepts were evaluated by means of laboratory tests. One concept was selected and was tested on various mining machines at underground sites by means of MSA personal samplers. The canopy air curtain was found to be effective. The percent reductions over the ambient dust concentrations were about 30 to 75 percent depending on the amount of time the operator spent under the air curtain. At one test site, the device enabled the mining machine to operate within compliance. Donaldson Company is presently working on the commercial production of the device.

Gold recovery by the cyanidation process is often accompanied by the leaching of other species. This leads to the depletion of the level of free cyanide and oxygen available for gold cyanidation. The largest proportion of the consumed cyanide is diverted by the cyanicides (eg S, Cu, Zn, Fe, etc) into non-valuable complexes.COREMÆs Extractive Metallurgy team has been conducting a research program on the improvement of the gold cyanidation process. As a part of this program, the current study aims to investigate the effect of certain operating parameters on the reactions involved during preoxidation and cyanidation. Flotation tailings and single mineral samples such as pyrite, sphalerite and chalcopyrite, along with their different combinations, were analysed to highlight the influence of ore mineralogy on the operating conditions. The effects of different kinds of oxidants (oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, ferricyanide and ozone) and chemical additives (ammonium sulfate) were investigated.Experiments conducted in alkaline solutions reveal that mineralogy is a key parameter since pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite react quite differently during preoxidation and cyanidation. A significant increase in sulfur dissolution, especially on pyrite, was observed by applying preoxidation. H2O2 preoxidation showed a positive effect on increasing sulfate formation, a desirable by-product from the cyanide consumption point of view. Preoxidation of synthetic ores with ferricyanide resulted in boosting thiosulfate formation. Tests conducted on flotation tailings from a polymetallic mine revealed that a short preoxidation increases the dissolution of the ore leading to higher gold recovery and lower cyanide consumption. Regarding the formation of thiocyanate, the most undesirable by-product of the cyanidation, ferricyanide and ozone were found particularly efficient to hinder their formation. Com o intuito de estudar o sopro combinado através de um modelo físico, similar com convertedor da thyssenkruppCSA 330t, foi utilizada uma análise visual associada a métodos colorimétricos para mensurar a penetração do jato e a melhor configuração de ventaneiras. Com base nesses métodos, encontrou-se a distância banho-lança que reduz o tempo de mistura com menor probabilidade de slopping. A partir dos resultados obtidos no modelo a frio, os parâmetros foram recalculados para a prática industrial.

In the EU-region, the automatically operated approximately 200 (rotating hammer) shredder plants processing large technical equipment (end-of-life vehicles, large household appliances) annually produces 8-9 million tons of non-metallic grinded by-product, which ends in landfills, without recovery. Although this by-product is organic material, still contains large amount of metal components worth recycling. These operations, such as shredding and processing end of life vehicles or mixed metal components are a growing market and it is become more potential if EU directive 2002/96/EC will become obligatory for new member and candidate countries and they have to apply EU regulations. Eddy current separators (ECS) are one of the most important units of separation of non-ferrous metals from insulators in waste recycling. The product of ECS processing of shredded ELV?s is usually a mixture of Al, Cu, Brass and stainless steel. This mixture has relatively low price on the market, while purified metal products are required by smelters for which shredder operators are able to get even higher price. Our aim at University of Miskolc was to find solution producing pure metal products using dry separation processes. Authors are presenting a possible solution, using ECS. Institute of Raw Material Preparation and Environmental Processing possesses an ECS, equipped with 305 mm wide belt, and a concentric magnetic rotor. The subject of our work was to investigate the behaviour of model particles with different shape, conductivity (aluminium and brass), orientation and size in order to separate Al and Brass. We used model particles with similar shapes of shredder plant originated ones. The magnetic flux and magnetic frequency was constant and derived by the design of the rotor. During our research work, belt speed and rotor speed of ECS were varied. The particle distance and trajectory caused by throwing was determined and the results are reported in this paper.

"In washability, the objective is to establish the set of maximum possible separation performance criteria for a given mineral feed. The method of choice for this has been the conventional sink-float analysis. Time, cost and safety aspects of the sink-float method have prompted the search for a new approach for establishing separation performance criteria, especially as performance levels of separator plants can be maximized if reliable information based on an analysis of washability in conjunction with particle size distribution, elemental constituency becomes readily available. The new method to establish washability and associated performance information utilizes at least two measurement technologies concurrently: single energy x-ray transmission and image processing. For porous or very inhomogeneous materials the results can be refined further by using dual energy x-ray transmission and image processing. The value of the collected data increases considerably if the washability data were additionally available in time to be considered in the control of the process plant. The incorporation of an automated washability monitor gives near real-time data that would impinge positively on the profitability of the plant operation. The method was extensively tested with a range of sample with different densities, varying from 1 g/cm³ (coal) to 5 g/cm³ (iron ore).INTRODUCTIONWashability of minerals like coal and iron ore is expressed by a curve or graph showing the results of a series of float-and-sink tests. Several of these curves are drawn to illustrate different conditions or variables, usually on the same axes, thus presenting the information on one sheet of paper. Washability curves are essential not only for the design but also for the operation of preparation plants.In determining the washability analysis, particle density is the underlying feature of all washability curves. Conventionally, the particles are separated into density fractions by immersing them in fluids of a predetermined density followed by skimming of those particles that stay afloat. The particles remaining afloat thus have a density lower than that of the fluid they were subjected to. The particles that remained at the bottom of the fluid container thus had a higher density higher than that of the fluid. By progressively increasing, for example, the density of the fluid and immersing the remaining particles so as to be able to skim the next density fraction, the particles would be fractionated into density groups. The liquids used range from aqueous solutions to organic liquids to suspensions. Unfortunately the liquids used for this separation process are often toxic and expensive. It stands to reason that a new method of determining washability is sought."

The South African Iron and Steel Company Ltd operates a large Iron Ore Mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The Mine is situated on the farm, Sishen, approximately 600 km west of Johannesburg. The annual capacity of the Mine is 100 million ton of ore and waste and the present production level is 60 million ton. The Mine operates continuously for 6 days a week. The primary equipment used to maintain the above production are 55, 154 t trucks (Wabco and Unit Rig) and 14 P & H shovels. During 1979 an urgent feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched at the Mine. This was due to the unrealistic escalation in the cost of diesel fuel and the appeal from the South African Government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technical feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50% and the diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 million litres in the next 10 years. Management subsequently approved the implementation of the system at Sishen. The construction of 7,7 km of line and the conversion of 66, 154 t trucks were completed in March 1982.

Gold-based nanoparticles in the size range of a few nm have attracted increasing interests in catalysis, sensors and biomedical applications. The study of the unique catalytic properties of nanosized gold was inspired by the pioneering work of Haruta on the nanogold-catalyzed CO oxidation (1-4). There have been a number of excellent reports discussing both fundamental and application aspects of gold nanoparticles in catalysis (3-8). Our work reported herein is aimed at investigating the preparation and application of gold and its alloy nanoparticles for potential applications in fuel cell catalysis. Fuel cells operating by electrochemical oxidation of hydrogen or methanol fuels at the anode and reduction of oxygen at the cathode are attractive power sources due to their high conversion efficiencies, low pollution, lightweight and high power density. While methanol offers the advantage of easy storage and transportation in comparison with hydrogen fuel cell, its energy density (~2000 Wh/kg) and operating cell voltage (0.4 V) are much lower than the theoretical energy density (~6000 Wh/kg) and the thermodynamic potential (~1.2 V). The poor activity of the anode catalysts and inefficient activity or issue related to "methanol cross-over" at the cathode electrode are associated with the loss of about one-third of the available energy at the cathode and the other one-third at the anode. Extensive studies have been focused on Pt-group metals (Pt+Pd+Rh+Ru+Ir (PGM)) for both anode and cathode catalysts. A major problem is the poisoning of Pt by COlike intermediate species (9,10). Recently, oxide-supported gold nanoparticles in the <10 nm size range have emerged as one of the best catalysts for CO oxidation (1-3,11), and for water gas shift reaction in reforming stage using 5 nm Au on Fe2O3 (6). Gold and its alloy with other metals in the nanosize range present new alternatives (2,12). Whether the unique properties of gold nanoparticles can be exploited for addressing these problems is a focus area of our work. The ability to harness the large surface area-to-volume ratios and the unique surface sites of nanoparticles in <10 nm size range, especially in heterogeneous catalysis, constitutes a major driving force in fundamental research and practical applications of nanoparticle catalysts. It is this size range over which the metal particles undergo a transition from atomic to metallic properties. The understanding of factors controlling the morphological and surface reconstitution associated with such a size range is of fundamental importance to the ultimate exploration of nanostructured catalysts. We have been investigating the interfacial structures and properties of core-shell types of nanoparticles consisting of gold or alloy nanocrystal cores and organic monolayer shells that were prepared by twophase synthesis (13) and processing (14) protocols. Important attributes of such nanoparticles include controllable size monodispersity, processibility, and stability towards size- and composition-tunable catalysis (15-21). Some of these attributes were studied for understanding their electrocatalytic properties in the oxidation of methanol and reduction of oxygen, which are of fundamental interest to fuel cell technology.

Potash from kelp.In this discussion very little more than passing reference, if any, will be given to those projects which up to date have been developed only slightly, if at all, beyond the small scale laboratory stage, or for the development of which there appears to be very little financial and technical backing at the present time. Nether or not many of these proposed projects have merit can be determined only by an actual operating demonstration.Generally speaking, the potash industry of the United States has been hardly more than marking time since the armistice. This is, largely due to the fact that the consumers of potash have been expecting that heavy shipments of foreign potash to the United States would be resumed soon at somewhere near the pre-war prices, and they have not seen owing domestic potash at present prices for many months. The result has been that domestic producers have been unable to sell their product at even cost and many producers of potash have been obliged to close down. Thu Nebraska lake plants were closed down in February. The California saline plants were operating at below capacity, and the only large alunite plant is closed down. Even the cement plants have little or no inducements to recover the potash being lost in their waste gases and the production is very small at present.This condition will doubtless continue until a definite policy is decided upon as to the future importation of potash salts from Germany and. France. If unrestricted importation is allowed at prices even 50% greater than in 1913, only a very few, if any, of the domestic projects will be in position to compete with the foreign potash immediately, and the present industry will probably greatly decline with little or no prospect for a future resumption of the industry."
