Roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines continue to experience overexposure to respirable dust. One potential source of dust in roof bolting operations is the exhaust from the roof bolter dust collection system. A wet exhaust conditioner (water box) has been developed to reduce dust emissions from the exhaust of the vacuum dust collection system on roof bolting machines. The exhaust conditioner consists of a muffler chamber and a water chamber with four internal partitions to direct airflow over the surface of the water. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a series of laboratory tests to assess the respirable dust capture ability of this device as compared to the standard exhaust muffler. To determine the dust collection efficiency, both devices were placed in the exhaust stream of a simulated roof bolter dust collection system. Gravimetric samplers were operated upstream and downstream of the exhaust conditioner and muffler to evaluate the ability to capture both respirable coal and limestone dust. Researchers observed a 41 % reduction in dust concentrations for the water exhaust conditioner in the laboratory configuration. Significant levels of dust deposition in the sampling chambers may have contributed to this effective capture rate.

"Drilled Displacement piles are a product of screw pile technology originally developed in Europe. The process involves rotating tool into the ground that displaces the soil laterally as it advances, then grouting or concreting through the hollow stem of the tool as it is withdrawn. They were first introduced in the United States in the 1990’s and have become a mature and accepted technology since that time. They are now used to support a variety of heavily loaded structures including electric power and LNG facilities, stadiums and arenas, airports and mid- to high-rise commercial and residential facilities. In urban environments, the technique has a number of advantages including, low noise and vibrations, no removal of the existing soil, and reduced pile material cost due to the improved stress state of granular soils after installation (smaller or shorter piles can be used). For these reasons, displacement piles have been used to support various facilities in Northeastern United States (US). The paper presents case histories of the performance of displacement piles in the Northeastern US including the use of full displacement elements as a settlement limiting ground improvement system.INTRODUCTION“Drilled Displacement” (DD) is an industry umbrella term for a number of proprietary or commercially available cast-in-place pile installation systems which involve a hollow-stem tool that laterally displaces soil as it advances and the placement of grout or concrete through the hollow-stem tool as it is withdrawn. The systems include grout/concrete placement methods by both sand-cement grout pumped under pressure and tremie grout/concrete placement through bottom-hole discharge. The system discussed in this paper includes grout pumped under pressure, also referred to as Auger Pressure Grouted Displacement (APGD). A schematic of the APGD tool is shown in Figure 1. The tools require significant torque and downward force to advance; a typical installation platform is shown in Figure 2."

This paper covers briefly the particular field of dolomite and magnesium limestone; certain uses of high-calcium limestone are mentioned only to show more clearly the limita¬ tions of the magnesian rocks. Such a comparison is helpful because magnesium carbonate is essential for some uses; for others it is immaterial; and for many its presence in an appreciable amount is objectionable. Magnesium carbonate, occurring as a rock resembling limestone or dolomite, is described in United States Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6437, Magnesite. Other com¬ pounds of magnesium are described in United States Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6406, Magnesium Compounds (Other Than Magnesite). Limestone, geologically, is a rock composed essentially of calcium carbonate; commercially, however, the term may include dolomite and magnesium limestone.

Foreign mining publications describing successful hydraulic mining installations, and successful domestic hydraulic mining in a gilsonite bed, have prompted the Federal Bureau of Mines to conduct a literature survey of foreign publications to determine if the hydraulic mining method can be applied to domestic coal mining. Most foreign publications do not give detailed data about the water pressures, water capacities, and production and manpower requirements for successful hydraulic mining, However, they do provide enough general data on mining conditions, manpower, and equipment used to show that conditions in many bituminous coal deposits in the United States may be favorable for economical coal extraction, using high-pressure water jets. Therefore, the Bureau proposes to conduct a field investigation to determine the most appropriate natural conditions, water pressures, and equipment for successful hydraulic mining of coal beds in the United States with variable dip, thickness, and hardness. In the past, technical personnel reviewing foreign mining reports assumed that a steeply pitching coal bed was necessary for successful hydraulic mining. Although the structure of the coal bed may be a factor in gaining assistance from overburden pressures or help in an integrated hydraulic mining and transportation system, the coal is broken mainly by the action of high-pressure, water-penetrating cracks, fissures, or cleats; therefore, the slope of the coal bed is not necessarily a determining factor in hydraulic mining.

To provide realistic up-to-date cost data and to disseminate knowledge of technical developments, the Federal Bureau of Mines, with the cooperation of individual mining companies, is presenting a series of mining methods and costs reports similar to those it issued before 1939. Gas stirring, simultaneous arcing, chemical additions are some basic steps in the secondary steel making. From tap to team however, there are enough uncertainties and several in-situ decision making required to match the fmal composition and temperature in the given amount of processing time. Currently available control algorithms rely on overall material and heat balance coupled with a self-learning regression based tuning of model constants. In this paper we demonstrate the capabilities of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in modeling and analyzing the thermo-chemical aspects of secondary Steelmaking. These models take advantage of scientific and engineering advances in computational tools and provide almost real time speed of analysis. This can be a very effective tool for operator training, process debugging and improvement as well as new innovations. The study of minero-petrographical characteristics and the subsequent textural and structural characterization of an ore mineral represents the first step of each industrial processing whose aim is the beneficiation of each valuable mineral phase present inside the ore. Analytical, mineralogical and petrographical, chemical and multispectral image analyses based investigations, applied to eclogitic ore samples deriving form "in situ" sampling campaigns, were applied. These procedures enabled to point out some textural and structural aspects characteristics of ore litotypes belonging to eclogitic-amphibolitic dikes. Such dikes are characterized by a paragenesis constituted mainly by siliceous gangue and accessory "useful titanium minerals" as rutile [TiO2], "pseudolilmenite", ilmenite [FeTiO3] and sphene [CaTiSiO5]. In the beneficiation process applied to ore s is of preliminary importance to establish a strategy in order to obtain a recovery of high quality "mono-minerals concentrates" as rutile, "pseudolimenite", ilmenite and phene. To reach this goal is thus necessary to develop a preliminary study of the textural, structural, petrochemical and minerochemical characteristics of the samples. Different ore samples (eclogitic rocks), resulting from sampling campaigns carried out in the Piampaludo area (Sassello district: Savona, Northern Italy), are examined.

High temperature, methane, dust and other disasters are getting more serious with mining depth getting deeper and the development of mechanization in underground mines. An application of a descensional ventilation to a coalface is one of the effective measures to solve the above problemes. The descensional ventilation is an venttilation that an airflow in a coalface wouuld downflow along an inclination of a coalface and the direction of the airflow is the same as coalflow. Since 1960's, the descensional ventilation has been applied to 171 coalfaces in 46 coal mines of 23 coal mine administrations in China, such as Pingdingshan , Zhongliangshan, Pubai, Huangshi coal mine administrations. Among the 171 coalfaces, there were 104 coalfaces taking 60.8% in gently inclined seam. The coalfaces in inclined seam and steep seam were individually taking 18.7 % and 20.5 %. There were 77 coalfaces taking 45 % of the total in low gassy coal mines and coal and methane outburst mine were individually taking 17% and 38%. There were 141 coalfaces taking 82.5% of the total in potential danger of dust explosion. There were 125 coalfaces taking 73.1% of the total in potential danger of spontaneous combustion. Therefore, the descensional ventilation can be used in coalfaces under different conditions in China. The practice at home and abroad shown that the application of the descensional ventilation to coalfaces has obvious results in dust control, temperature control, preventing methane accumulation at top corner angle and control of spontaneous combustion in goaf. To more safely and reliably apply the descensional ventilation to coalface and to provide a way for the development of mine ventilation technology in China, the paper will have discussions on the following problems: METHANE EMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION AT COALFACE WITH DESCENSIONAL VENTILATION Methane emission in a coalface with a descensional ventilation is an argued issue for many years. Base on the coal practice, special similar model tests and researches in China, the followings are our main comments. The Descensional Ventilation can Reduce the Methane, Accumulation at the Top Corner Angle. The measurements in six coalfaces with the downward airflow in Qinhemen Mine, Fuxin Coal Mine Administrations shown that the methane concentration at the top corner angle is often up to l% when the coalface has the upward, airflow. The max. methane concentration at the top corner angle is about 0.49 to 0.7% when the coalface has the descensional ventilation. Therefore, with the descensional ventilation, it basically solved the overlimited gas concentration at the top corner angle which is a potential danger to coal production. Because the direction of upfloating gas is opposite to the direction, of the descensional airflow, the descensional ventilation; could increase a turbulent flow mixing capacity of the methan gas and air, and reduce a possibility of methane; accumulation. Due to an air leakage in goat when the coalface with the descensional ventilation lower than an air leakage in goat when the coalface with the, ascensional ventilation, a less methane quantity will release from goat at the descensional ventialtion. It should be pointed out that due to a higher air leakage at ascensional ventilation and the direction of the air; leakage same to the direction of the natural upfloating methane in goaf, those will cause a large methane; accumulation at the top of the goaf and easy bring about, methane accumulation and overlimited methane concentration at the top corner angle with an ventilation vortexflow at the top corner angle. On the other hand, because the direction of the upfloation force function is upward, the descentional ventilation could minimize as possibility of methane accumulation at top corner angle in coal with the descensional ventiltion.

The mine is entered by a central vertical shaft, strongly timbered, and containing two compartments-one for the passenger cage, the other for the large skips bringing the ore to the surface. A man-way, for emergencies, is also provided, parallel to the shaft. The cage is a single-deck steel box, carrying about thirty persons; by means of arrangements above and below, it can also hoist and lower materials needed in the workings. Levels are run at intervals of 100 feet. In special cases, where the ore conditions warrant, sub-levels are operated, such as those at 1,113 feet and 1,123 feet (Fig. 7), which are connected by winzes with the 11 th level. One of these was pushed for 40 feet, and then abandoned because it was unprofitable to take up ore of the grade encountered. The ore between levels is removed by stoping. The drifts follow the course of the veins as much as possible, with numerous cross-cuts. Winzes, raises, connections, etc., are blasted out where needed. The main drifts are at least 8 ft. high by about 9 ft. wide. All former narrow drifts had to be widened sorne time ago, by ruling of the Ontario Department of Mines, to lessen the danger of accidents with cars in the small passages. Accurate plans of the under-ground workings are kept in the office, and extensive surveying is always being done underground to keep the maps up to date, measure the cubical contents of stopes, and so forth. Timber is extensively used in the construction of supports and chutes, and in the sinking of the shaft. Steel and concrete are too expensive to compete with timber, which 1s abundant in such sections as have escaped forest tires.

Precast concrete segmental linings have enjoyed widespread use around the world, and are the lining type of choice for tunnels constructed using a shielded tunnel boring machine. However, there is significant variation in the design of such linings from one country to the next in such areas as materials, geometry, fixtures and fittings, waterproofing and reinforcement to name but a few. This arises because the speed at which the technology has developed within some countries and regions has sometimes outstripped the transfer of such technologies to the rest of the world.This paper provides some insights into the variations in lining design in different parts of the world with the aim of providing designers and constructors alike a reference for the different methods adopted. It provides a context for these developments by briefly summarising historical reviews of this subject before looking at some of the developments around the world over the last 15–20 years. The developments are presented with some reference to the reasons for implementation, and the advantages and limitations commented on. Edward Stafford, Chester, Pa.:—Doring all my business life, I have been engaged in the manufacture of Bessemer and open-hearth steels, but, during my long connection with the Shoenberger Steel Co. of Pittsburg, I had some experience in the manufacture of high-grade puddled iron for horseshoes, and in making, by Dr. Otto Wuth's process, extremely pure, low-phosphorus puddled blooms (analyzing from 0.005 to 0.01 per cent. of phosphorus and sulphur), which were melted with low-phosphorus pig-iron in acid open-hearth furnaces, to make extra locomotive fire-box steel. I have also seen the Danks puddlers in operation at different times and places, notably where they were most successful, at the Otis Steel Works, Cleveland, Ohio; then under the management of our friend, Mr. S. T. Wellman. These Danks blooms were made solely for open-hearth melting-stock, to which they were well adapted. (The unavoidable presence of bits of ore-fix imbedded in the mass of the metal always prevents the profitable manufacture of merchant iron from Danks' blooms.) With the experience just described, I was to some degree in position to value fairly the means, methods and results of Mr. Roe's mechanical puddling from the metallurgical or technical and economic points of view, when given an opportunity by Mr. Roe to see his puddling-furnace or machine in operation in Pottstown, Pa. Briefly, the furnace, with water-cooled bottom, is rectangular in plan, about 20 by 8 ft. in the clear, suspended by trunnions at the middle of the long sides, at a height of 17 or 18 ft. above the general level. Chance find of an economically important mineral on the sur- face and its exploitation without proper exploration work, has become the habit of humanity since the Bronze Age. The explora- tion and exploitation techniques have, however, been substan- tially improved in the technologically developed western world and system controlled major communist countries. Nevertheless, the greatest need is felt in the Third World countries where large mineral potential exists, but with inadequate investments in exploration and exploitation techniques, a handicap that has been beneficial to the more developed countries, since long. The great number of the Third World countries which are striv- ing hard to develop, need to formulate mineral exploration and exploitation strategies which could enable them to develop their resources. This requires planning and creating new concepts of ore deposit types and genetic models, rheology, economics and their innovation and integration. The following approach could help them to be economically "more independent" by the end of this century. 1. Bridging of pure and applied geology gap, and creating con- sciousness of research and development. 2. Revision of mineral resources concepts adopted to modern technological world. 3. Improved mineralogical research, and determinative miner- alogy as an important asset. 4. Creative research and establishing know-how, with philosophical base for regional exploration projects. 5. Indepth investigation into the origin and growth of earth as a system, and its importance in the association, quality, and quantity of metallic, non-metallic and energy resources con- centrations. 6. Mineral beneficiation, targets and strateties; methods of eco- nomic and improved recovery systems. Development of alter- native technology, and utilization of mineral technology strategies. 7. Theoretical and practical modelling by conventional and com- puter techniques of the existing and expected mineral resources, and mineral development. 8. "The Property of Rix Athabasca Uranium Mines Limited is in the Beaverlodge area of northwestern Saskatchewan. The mine is 7 miles by road north from the Lake Athabasca port of Bushell which is 250 miles north by aircraft or boat from railhead at Waterways, Alberta.The Rix property is a portion of the former DD 1 concession, obtained in 1949 from the government of Saskatchewan when private prospecting for uranium became permissible. The concession was prospected in detail during the 1950 and 1951 field seasons and a great many radioactive show-ings were discovered. Development and drilling were concentrated in two and later three of these areas, and by late 1952 enough ore had been indicated in the Leonard series and ""Smitty"" zone to justify underground development by adit-drift and shaft respectively.Four hundred feet of drift development on the Leonard No. 1 vein and the sinking of a two-level vertical shaft with related lateral development on the Smitty zone were completed in 1953. In April 1954 the Smitty section was placed in production at a rate averaging 100 tons per day, thereupon becoming the first privately owned post-war uranium producer in Canada. The ore is shipped for processing 12 miles by truck to the mill of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited.Until recently all of the Company's production was drawn from the Smitty orebody. In April, 1955, ore production commenced from the faulted west extension of the Smitty structure, known as the Rix 62 zone, and from the Leonard No. 1 vein.The Smitty orebody (see Figure 2) is an intensely brecciated lenticular zone bordering both sides of the Smitty fault. The breccia areas are irregularly mineralized with pitchblende, very sparse galena, and pyrite in a gangue of feldspar, chlorite, calcite, and silica, all thoroughly soaked with fine-grained hematite to produce the locally-called ""red alteration"".Tenor of the ore currently being mined is classified information. The average grade estimated, prior to production, was 0.20 per cent (4.0 lbs.) U308 per ton."

Lightweight aggregates have become increasingly important to the construction industry. From 1953 to 1960, the quantity of the aggregates used in concrete block, precast and prestressed concrete, and monolithic structures increased about 92 percent. The present study was conducted in Bureau of Mines Area IV which encompasses the South-Central States of Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. This is an administrative area and does not delimit a market area or imply an economic unit. Because of the increasing importance of metropolitan areas in evaluating economic growth, significant data showing relationships between growth of the metropolitan areas and the lightweight aggregate industry are included.

This paper takes a look at the optimal velocity to be used in coal mine entries and determines a statistical relationship for optimal velocity that can be applied under current mining conditions. This relationship provides the optimal velocity for coal mine airways under variations in power cost, mining cost differential, airway friction factor, time value of money, airway lifespan, and quantity of air carried. This enables the ventilation engineer to make an easy, rapid determination of the optimal velocity for planning purposes.

"INTRODUCTION The object of the techniques described in this report is to determine the possibilities of separating the components of a raw coal into such grades as may be necessary to recover some exceptionally clean functions for special purposes.To do this commercial gravity methods would require separation at very low specific gravities, entirely outside the range of conventional practice. Hence, a technique has been developed for breaking down cool ample, into very close fractions within the gravity range of the (-lean coal matter as well as for separating it from the refuse and particles.Such data on the fundamental specific-gravity consist of the clean-coal matter will serve to appraise the difficulty of the problem and to chow be accomplished if and when effective methods of making such separations commercially are developed."

The use of sheet and strip metal has increascd rapidly during the last few years and manufacturers have been called upon for an ever-increasing tonnage, better drawing quality, and better surface. The automobile industry is probably the most insistent in striving for a better product and a desire to reduce costs. Confronted by these demands, the mills have directed their efforts toward the delivery of material. Their personnel has been occupied largely with the problems incident to production, as any increase forced the use of new sources of raw material with their problems. These problems, combined with those met in the daily routine, have demanded immediate attention, with the result that the standardizing of heat treatments, quality, or temper, etc., have been neglected. Considerable work in standardizing has been done by many companies, but no acceptable method has been developed. The following method, therefore, is given with the hope that some method that can be accepted by the manufacturers and users may be developed. The problem of selecting a material with such properties that the losses in processing are a minimum is interesting and difficult. A description of the properties required is likewise difficult, largely because of loose terms. Another handicap is the number of methods of testing which have not been standardized and concerning which little information is available. In the selection of drawing or forming stock, it is advisable to eliminate as many variables as possible; consequently the method of testing the material is of the utmost importance. The method should be rapid and comparatively easy of application, as it is more important that a large percentage of the stock be tested with reasonable accuracy than that

Deposits of gold, silver and other precious metals often display a high variability of grade values, usually a very low average metal content and are frequently not easy to sample reliably. The characteristics, together with the volatility of precious metal prices, make evaluations of precious metal deposits extremely difficult to make. Geostatistical estimation techniques can be used to make grade estimates of precious metals and to assess the reliability of these estimates. Two case studies are presented.
