The Bond and the Hardgrove methods are widely used for the determination of the material?s grindability. Generally, the determination of the Bond work index of inhomogeneous materials can be carried out with high deviation using the conventional apparatuses and methods, because of the highly different grindability of components. This is more significant when the composite cement?s grindability is measured, which highly affects the design and operation of cement grinding mills. A possible solution can be the combined application of the Bond-method with the determination of the component?s weight ratio in the product and perform the Bond measurement until the steady state conditions of grindability coefficient (G) and chemical composition of the components are reached. To prove the applicability of the above mentioned idea systematic Bond and Hardgrove grindability tests were carried out of two phase composite materials. The experimental results showed that the application of the combined procedure is proven in order to have a more accurate and reliable calculation of the Bond work index of composite materials, especially when the components have significant difference in the grindability and concentration. The measurements also showed the possibilities and limits of the grindability test methods.

The Stave Falls Project of BC Hydro, situated 65km east of Vancouver, BC, Canada, involved the construction of a new two-unit 9OMW hydro-electric facility to replace an existing powerhouse. The final phase of the intake excavation consisted of a plug blast to break the channel through into Stave Lake. The plug consisted of a rock and till wall topped with a fill cofferdam, about 51m wide and between 8 and 12m high. Total rock volume was approximately 2600m3, overlaid with about 4600m3 of till/fill. This paper describes the methodology and practical techniques used in planning and loading the blast, and the precautions taken to protect the new and existing structures and equipment. Blasting of the plug by the normal method using downholes would have required the placing of extra fill and much drilling through casing, so the contractor made the decision to drill horizontal holes from the dry, downstream side. Because of poor rock conditions, all 183 holes had to be drilled oversize at 3.5” dia. and fitted with 2.5” id. plastic pipes to keep them open. Hole lengths ranged from 2.5 to 18rn, with a pattern of 1.5m spacing and l.Om burden (with the holes slightly fanned vertically). Because of significant water exposure, a film-packaged emulsion explosive was used, placed using a pneumatic cartridge loader for maximum borehole compaction. The powder factor averaged 1.3kg/m3 (2.21bs/yd3, rock only). An initiation system of combination surface/downhole delay shocktube units was employed, with double and triple redundancy. The maximum number of holes firing in any 8ms window was limited to three (to minimize vibration), while the whole sequence was fully activated before the first hole fired. All shocktube connections were secured and covered over at the foot of the rockface before flooding the excavation downstream of the plug prior to the shot, To protect the powerhouse gates from hydraulic shock, all hole collars were grouted and an air curtain was provided. The blast was completely successful. A maximum vertical displacement of 6m was recorded, but no flyrock was evident. Readings for peak over-pressure and vibration were well below the allowed limits. Mucking proved to be easy, with fine fragmentation, full pull, and no tights.

A study was undertaken to determine whether interrelations between mineral grains affect ore breakage during grinding, and to establish a correlation between ore breakage and mineral liberation. A base metal ore from the Brunswick No. 12 deposit in New Brunswick was ground for different periods of time in a laboratory ball mill, and both the unbroken ore and the ground products were analysed by image analysis. The results show that the mode of breakage is strongly influenced by the behaviour of pyrite. Similar size distributions were obtained for material from the 15 minute grind in a laboratory ball mill, for the grinding circuit discharge from a commercial mill, and for pyrite grains in the unbroken ore. This similarity indicates that a 15 minute grind breaks poorly bonded pyrite grains along grain boundaries, and represents the limit of easy breakage for the ore. Such a grind liberates both large separate grains of ore minerals and poorly bonded mineral grains that occur in interstices among pyrite. On the other hand the 15 minute grind does not separate moderately bonded mineral grains nor release moderately bonded interstitial minerals from pyrite; a 45 minute grind in a laboratory ball mill is required. It is assumed that, for Brunswick No. 12 ore, a 45 minute grind in a laboratory ball mill is equivalent to regrinding in a commercial mill. Grinding beyond 45 minutes in a laboratory ball mill breaks the ore by fracturing pyrite across grain boundaries and by chipping grain edges. Such intense grinding does not markedly increase sphalerite liberation from Brunswick No. 12 ore, because most of the sphalerite that can be released was liberated at the 45 minute grind. In contrast the intense grinding increases galena liberation because a significant proportion of the galena occurs as minute inclusions in pyrite. These findings show that ore breakage and coincident liberation depend upon size distributions, intergrowths, and mode of occurrence of the minerals in an ore.

Separation Technologies, LLC (ST) has developed a processing system based on triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. The environmentally friendly process can eliminate wet processing and required drying of the final material. The process requires little if any pre-treatment of the material other than grinding and operates at high capacity ? up to 40 tonnes per hour by a compact machine. Energy consumption is low, approximately 1 kWh/tonne of material processed. Since the only potential emission of the process is dust, permitting is typically relatively easy. In contrast to the other available electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the ST belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (300 µm) materials with very high throughputs. The triboelectric particle charging is effective for a wide range of materials and only requires particle ? particle contact. The small gap, high electric field, counter current flow, vigorous particle-particle agitation and self-cleaning action of the belt on the electrodes are the critical features of the ST separator. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through charging / recharging and internal recycle results in far superior separations and is effective on fine materials that cannot be separated at all by the conventional electrostatic techniques. Since 1995, this triboelectric process has been extensively used for the beneficiation of coal fly ash with eighteen separators in place and over 130 machine-years of operation at locations in North America and Europe. ST has also installed separators for the beneficiation of industrial minerals in North America and Europe. The technology has been successfully applied to the beneficiation of a variety of minerals including calcium carbonates, talc, barite, and potash.

Introduction The sliding-form method of erecting concrete structures was first devised and used in the early part of this century by the Sante Fe Railroad Company for the erection of a grain elevator at Santa Fe, New Mexico. A somewhat related principle has been employed for a number of years in shaft lining work and, to our knowledge, was perfected in Butte, Montana, but until the building of the concrete headframe at the Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Company, Ltd., at Asbestos, Que., the method, as applied to surface structures, was quite foreign to the mining industry in Canada. The current shortage and cost of structural steel shapes has no doubt contributed more than any other single factor to the investigations that have led to the use of reinforced concrete as a headframe building material. Mining men in western Quebec and northern Ontario have shown a great deal of interest in the design and construction of the headframe at the East Sullivan mine in Bourlamaque township, Que., and we have had many queries regarding the methods used and, in particular, for an explanation of the sliding-form principle. This article is written in an attempt to set forth the conditions which were to be met; to explain the construction methods used, and to discuss the economy of concrete headframes as compared with the conventional steel structures with which the mining fraternity is familiar.

They directly Impact revenue and hence operating philosophy. The mineral engineer needs to develop an optimum operating strategy to meet his overall objectives, One would expect that, In the modem era of complex computer models, it would be easy to develop an economic model to maximize profits and/or cash flow. Discussions with mill managers Indicate that one mine/corporation&apos;s optimum operating strategy is not necessarily optimum for another. This paper approaches the problems from basics "Economics 101" and Illustrates the complexity of developing a universal model which can be applicable to all mines. Case examples are used to illustrate the need for better communication to avoid the basic economic fallacy “that optimization of segments leads to optimization of the whole system.” TECHNICAL MODELS Technical models are a prerequisite to the development of economic models because they provide the necessary Input data to these models, The flow of material from a mine through the sale of the finished product is shown In Figure 1. The ore Is mined and milled, and the concentrate can be stored for sale or smelted and refined In-house or at a toll facility. The finished product(s) are held In Inventory until sold either through existing contracts or in the spot market. [ ] Fairly reliable technical models have been developed for mining, milling and smelter operations. Mine plans are developed to provide a good Indication of the relationship between production and cut-off grade. It is easier to change surface mine plans than plans for underground mines. However, there are limits to maximum production that can be achieved with existing equipment. It Is possible that mine benches may not be developed to handle additional equipment, even If It was purchased to enhance production. More often than not, the cut-off grade Is lowered to Increase throughput goals.

It frequently occurs in the establishment of reduction works, in an entirely new and untried mining district, that the metallurgist in charge finds considerable difficulty in determining the process best adapted to the ores which he receives for treatment. At the first glance it would seem easy enough to decide what style of furnace is best adapted for beneficiating any one class of minerals. If the ore possessed a quartzose gangue and was comparatively free from base metals, while salt could be obtained at a reasonable price, one would naturally resort to a chloridizing roasting, and pan or barrel amalgamation for the extraction of its silver contents. If galena or carbonate of lead was the prevailing mineral, and charcoal could be obtained at moderate figures, the blast-furnace would beneficiate the ores most advantageously. But if, as is usually the case in Colorado, the ores consisted of an intimate mixture of galena, zinc-blende, copper-pyrites, and noble silver minerals, associated with an overwhelming mass of siliceous heavy spar, or limestone gangue, the common reverberatory furnace can be used to the greatest advantage ; and, although the product is only a copper matte, I do not hesitate to affirm that it can be treated, and the silver, gold, and copper produced at nearly the same price for which silver and lead can be separated. In Germany, blast-furnaces are frequently used for this same purpose, both for argentiferous and non-argeutiferous copper ores; but any one who will take the trouble to examine the statistics of smelting at Fahlun, the Oberharz, and other Continental works of this description, will see that the expenses are far too great, and the production much too small to think of employing this method in our mining districts, where only the softest and most miserable kind of charcoal is obtainable. I propose in this paper to give an accurate account of the expenses incurred at the Mount Lincoln Smelting Works in treating the same kind of ore, and producing the same end-product in both blast and reverberatory furnaces. I have taken for comparison a favorable campaign of the blast-furnace, and a good average month&apos;s running of the reverberatory. A shortage of anthracite for home heating indicates the necessity of using other fuels for this purpose; low-volatile bituminous, or "soft" coal is the most feasible supplementary fuel, either burned alone or when mixed with anthracite. Comparison of Bituminous Coal and Anthracite Whereas anthracite is clean, burns without smoke, and requires little attention, bituminous coal is dusty, tends to burn with a smoky flame, and forms coke in the fire pot that must be broken up to maintain a continuous high output of heat. When properly fired, however, bituminous coal responds more quickly than anthracite to changes in damper settings and consequently can supply more heat in a short time. It is generally less expensive and usually contains less ash than anthracite.

The Bureau of Mines drilled and sampled the more important magnesite deposits in the Currant Creek Mining District, White Pine County, Nev. The properties of the Ala-Mar Magnesium Co., Inc., and the Nevada Magnesite Co. were examined in August 1942 by D. W. Butner, engineer of the Bureau of Mines, to determine the advisability of investigating the deposits under the strategic minerals program. Development involving diamond drilling, trenching, and sampling was started September 1, 1942, and was completed in the latter part of November 1942. The deposits are on unsurveyed public land in T. 12N., B. 59 E., M.D.B.&M., in an area of high relief ranging from 7,300 to 8,100 feet in altitude. Both properties are situated northwest of the Tonopah-Ely Highway, U.S. Highway 6, from which a dirt road extends about 4.6 miles northwesterly, about 35 miles southwest of Ely, to the Ala-Mar property, and another dirt road extends about 10 miles westerly, about 26 miles southwest of Ely, to the Nevada Magnesite property. The magnesite occurs as irregular nodules, veins, and lenses in a bedded calcareous tuff formation, which overlies a group of volcanic rocks, and which is capped by remnants of rhyolite flows.

"Drilling and blasting are fundamental operations in the mining cycle and constitute an important component of the mining costs. Problems associated with improper drilling and blasting practices can create losses of several millions of dollars per year. For this reason, a Blasting Technology program was initiated in 1984 at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC). In this paper, advances made at NTC in drill and blast technology are reviewed. Impacts of drilling and basting for Noranda are assessed in terms of dilution and ore losses. Future challenges are addressed. IntroductionUp to 1997, Noranda was a diversified natural resources company that operated in three sectors: mining and metallurgy, forest products, and oil and gas. Seeking to reduce the likelihood of uncontrolled personnel entry into the operating footprint of a dragline, Coronado Global Resources initiated a review of proximity detection systems currently available and equipment interactions in and around dragline operational areas. At the time of the assessment, there were no established personnel proximity detection systems in compliance with functional safety standards for large machinery in Australia. Our primary objective was to guarantee a functionally safe outcome, particularly by implementing a performance-level-rated system in accordance with AS4024 (Safety of Machinery series of Australian Standards). Applying appropriate detection technologies, the goal was to reduce the residual operating risk for machine-to-machine and machine-to-personnel interactions. A comprehensive analysis of available or in-development technologies was conducted, and a layered approach (demonstrated in Figure 1) was adopted to achieve the desired risk reduction by segregating the sensing zones into distinct areas using diverse and disparate technologies consisting of radar (short); light detection and ranging (LiDAR) (medium); and optical (long). To address the potential limitations of each technology, overlapping layered sensing zones were designed. With LIDAR and optical using two distinct artificial intelligence (AI) systems to classify detections, these were specifically trained to handle the unique environments of a mining operation.

Dolomite, heretofore regarded merely as a variety of commonplace limestone, has suddenly attained headline prominence, partly because of the increase in demand for dolomite refractories to line metallurgical furnaces now working at an unprecedented rate of activity, but chiefly because it has become an ore of the light-weight metal, magnesium, needed in vast quantities for the manufacture of war machines. A multitude of inquiries, chiefly from war agencies and prespective operators, for data not only on locations of dolomite deposits but on their size and quality, has made it necessary for the Bureau of Mines to assemble all information available on this important subject. From the Bureau&apos;s own records, published information, and correspondence, date on locutions, extent, thickness, accessibility, workability, and chemical composition of high-grade dolomite deposits throughout the United states were accumulated for presentation herein. The report includes about 1,000 tabulations of analyses and a map showing locations of the deposits. The uses of dolomite are discussed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7192, "Occurrences and Uses of Dolomite in the United-States," published in 1941. The cordial corporation of many State ecological surveys and various individuals who have contributed information is gratefully acknowledged.

As a part of a wartime program to aid in the development of known ore bodies and in the discovery of hitherto unknown deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of diamond-drilling the Christmas copper deposit, in Gila County, Ariz., to increase the reserves of milling ore. Upon recommendation of the examining engineer, drilling was begun in September 1942, from the bottom (770) level of the mine. One month later, in cooperation with the Bureau, the Federal Geological Survey started geologic mapping of the mine workings. Since extensive and costly development would be required, the War Production Board concluded that ore below the bottom level could not be mined at that time because of the wartime shortages of equipment and man-power. In January 1943, drilling was moved to the 300 and 400 levels to locate reserves readily accessible for continued production of fluxing ore. This drilling, which was under the supervision of L. G. Marshall, was completed in January 1944.

THE CHAIRMAN (ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.).-Any information likely to throw light on the constitution and proper treatment of high-speed steel in order to obtain maximum results, should surely he welcomed. All users of high-speed steel, I believe, will agree with the authors that, in order to obtain satisfactory results, it is not sufficient to heat all brands of high-speed steel to one and the same temperature; apparently very slight differences of chemical composition seem to call for marked differences in temperature. I think that all of us agree that a properly treated piece of high-speed steel should have a fine austenitic or polyhedral structure and that an appreciable quantity of free carbide may be present in the case of very high tungsten steels. What we seem to lack is a satisfactory method, quick and reliable, of ascertaining when the proper structure has been obtained. I think Mr. Bellis&apos; paper is a step in the right direction. To the untrained eye, however, it is not an easy matter to select from some of his photomicrographs the one representing the best structure; for instance, in the case of steel A, we wonder why temperatures of 2,250 and 2,300 do not yield the same results, seeing that both structures are apparently alike, and the same might apply to some of the other samples. I have no doubt, however, that the experienced observer is capable of detecting structural differences that are not made plain here and by which he is able to select the proper quenching temperature. J.-On page 68 the authors say that the use of a barium chloride bath to eliminate this difficulty has the disadvantage that the surface of the tool becomes decarbonized." I would like to ask whether they actually found that the surface was decarbonized, or whether they base this conclusion on softening alone? A. E. BELLIS, Springfield, Mass.-No, we have never demonstrated that it was a decarbonization, it is just the softening of the steel. The addition of ferrocyanide to the ferrochloride bath has been suggested. I think that is not altogether satisfactory, because the ferrocyanide bath changes composition very rapidly at these high temperatures, and it would be just a question of luck whether or not it had too much or too little ferrocyanide in the bath giving equilibrium with the carbon content.

LIABILITY OF RAILROADS, ETC., FOR BURIAL EXPENSES.-When any railroad company, stage or any steamboat, propeller, or other vessel engaged in whole or in part in carrying passengers for hire, brings the dead body of any person into this State, or any person dies upon any railroad car or in such stage, steamboat, propeller or other vessel in this State, or any person is killed by cars, or machinery of any railroad company or by accident thereto or by accident to or upon any such stage, steamboat, propeller, or other vessel, or by accident to or in or about any mine, mill or manufactory,* the company or person owning or operating such cars, inachinery, stage, steamboat, propeller, or other vessel, mine, mill or manufactory shall be liable to pay the expenses of the coroner's inquest upon and burial of the deceased and the same may be recovered in the name of the County in any court of competent Jurisdiction. NOTE--The original Act of February 15, 1855 (Laws 1855, p. 170), makes no reference to the dead bodies of persons killed" by accident to, in or about any mine."

INTRODUCTION The economic structures of industrialized countries require a continuous supply of reasonably priced and appropriately processed nonfuel minerals. As a result, national policy makers are sensitive to real or perceived threats to the effective operation of these commodity markets. Their most persistent concerns can be subsumed into the related political economy issues of supply availability and marketplace stability. These concerns are not new. For over a century the "global struggle" for mineral resources has influenced national policies and international relations (Eckes, 1979). During the past two decades the complexity of these issues, if not their place on national political agendas, has increased. Dramatic changes in the structure of mineral industries and in the nature of international economic relations have redefined policy needs and response options. This paper focuses on how selected OECD countries have responded to nonfuel mineral industry issues over the past twenty-five years. Particular emphasis is placed on the impact these policy decisions have had on the size and location of productive capacity and its utilization rates. The results, perhaps, are not surprising for this group of market- oriented economics. While individual cases of significant impact are easy to identify at various times in most countries, the overall importance of policy decisions has not been great. This is especially true for the past decade when excess capacity reached unusual highs of magnitude and duration. Macroeconomic forces and market structure changes played much more important roles. PERSPECTIVES ON THE ISSUES OECD nations dominate the international nonfuel minerals marketplace as producers, consumers and traders. In 1986, these twenty-four countries accounted for 75 percent of the Western world&apos;s export trade value in minerals, ores and metals. They imported 88 percent of the total value. During 1966, the respective percentages were 70 and 94. Japan was the world&apos;s largest importer in 1986 followed by the US, FRG, UK and France. The same five countries led the 1966 list except that, then, Japan was ranked fourth. Table 1 ranks the fifteen largest Western exporting nations in the two specified years. It also indicates the growth in current export dollars earned in 1986 compared to 1966.

[This investigation of the refractory properties of seven Pacific Northwest chrome ores and concentrates has shown that five of the ores and one of the concentrates are suitable for making refractories and that all may be used in combination with high-grade chromite. The specific objectives of the investigation were to determine the inherent physic al and chemical characteristics, to shapes using each of the chrome ores and concentrates, to compare the refractory qualities of the laboratory-prepared with commercial chrome refractories. This work is a codification and annotation of the Congressional enactments relating to minerals, mineral lands, and mining. It covers every enactment of Congress from the original ordinance of 1785 to the present time, as well as all sections of the Revised Statutes of the United States relating to these subjects. These laws are grouped according to their general subject matter, and are arranged thereunder in numerical or chronological order. Many of the mining statutes include matter not pertinent to the subject, and only those parts of such acts are quoted as will properly show their relation to minerals and mineral lands and indicate how they should be construed. Some mining acts have been repealed or have become obsolete, and others have become incorporated substantially in sections of the Re- vised Statutes; but these are retained in order to show the changes made, and the constructions placed thereon by the courts are given as aids in construing the new or repealing acts. The annotations consist of legal propositions abstracted from the decisions of the various courts and executive officers of the Govern- ment that have interpreted the sections and statutes so codified. These legal propositions are arranged under the different sections and acts with appropriate headings, titles, and subtitles, in logical order, exhibiting the present status of each particular section or act and its application to the subject of mines and mineral lands. The annotations do not purport to be abstracts of decisions on the sub- stantive law of mines and mining generally, but are limited strictly to the interpretation placed on a given section or act definitely re- ferred to by a court or executive officer by the number of the section of the Revised Statutes or the volume and page of the Statutes at Large in which the Congressional enactment is found. It may be observed that the legal propositions stated are not always pertinent to the particular section or act under which they are classed and of which they purport to give a construction. The arrangement, however, is not an arbitrary one, but is so made for the reason that the courts or officers in the construction of a particular section or act definitely referred to by number or volume and page incorporated in the decision matter not strictly pertinent to the par- ticular section or act so designated. This statement applies especially to the interpretations placed on the sections of the Revised Statutes. The Minto coal basin lies in the central part of the province of New Brunswick, near the head of Grand Lake. The village of Minto which is the centre of mining activity of the district, lies about 35 miles east of Fredericton and somewhat greater distances to the north and west of the cities of St. John and Moncton respectively. Although coal has been mined in the basin for a number of years, it was not until recently that the production became sufficient to warrant a thorough geological investigation. The summer of 1922 was spent, in accordance with in structions from the Director of the Geological Survey, in making a detailed study of the geology and coal resources of the Minto coal basin, which is covered by the Minto and Chipman map sheets, each embracing an area of 200 square miles. The present paper is a short outline of the principal results obtained in the field. The writer wishes to acknowledge the assistance cheerfully given him by the managers and officials of the various companies operating in Minto. He wishes especially to thank Mr. W. B. As a follow-on to previous investigations, reduced treatment levels for the optimum fire retardant/preservative system were evaluated. An impregnation of 3.5 lbs/ft3 of Fyreprufe followed by 3.5 mils of Albi 107A plus an Albi 144 top coat provides adequate flammability and flame spread protection. However, there is a significant loss in compressive strength at this retention level, particularly parallel to the grain. A pilot-size pressure impregnation cell was installed for use in treating larger quantities of wood. Based on the optimum fire retardant/preservative treatment system - Fyreprufe/ACC impregnation followed by Albi 107A/144 intumescent paint - a model treatment pro¬cess was developed, capable of handling 3 million board feet per year. Associated annualized costs per thousand board feet (K bd. ft.) for treating 12" x 12" timber were calculated to be: Impregnation: $-63.00/K bd. ft. Coating: $112.00/K bd. ft. A literature search was conducted to identify materials and techniques suitable for a localized stench warning system for heated mine timbers. Based on this review, a number of stench warning concepts were developed. Those based on surface coating were given a preliminary laboratory evaluation.
