"The Afsin-Elbistan coal deposit with its 3.4 billion metric tons of reserve is the biggest coal basin and one of the most important resources for electrical energy production in Turkey. The coal deposit is located north of Elbistan, Kahramanmaras Province, in southeast Turkey (Fig. 1).The Kislakoy sub-basin of the Afsin-Elbistan basin was selected as the first open cast mine to feed four power station blocks of 340 MW each. The mine is equipped with six identical bucket wheel excavators of the type Sch Rs (2300/5) 32. The annual coal demand of the power station is 18.5 million metric tons. The Elbistan basin encompasses an area of 900 km2, and its centre lies about 1150 m above mean sea level. The sedimentation took place mainly in the upper Pliocene period. The thickness of the coal bed varies from 20 m to 60 m, respectively. The basal part of the coal beds consists of clay, marl and sandy clay. These formations are overlain by gyttja, which may also occur in the form of calcareous ooze, enveloping coal beds. The thickness of the gyttja is up to 35 m (Otto-Gold, 1969). The coal of Afsin-Elbistan is soft coal and the quality has been found to vary considerably throughout the deposit. The thicknesses of the sterile intercalations vary from 0.50 m to 2.2 m and average 1 m in thickness. From the quality control point of view, the coal seam is regarded as upper seam where the gyttja formation occurs as sterile intercalations, and lower seam where the clay formation occurs instead of the gyttja (Fig. 2). The CaO content of upper Kislakoy coal is very high, grinding resistance is low and base to acid ratio of ash, that is, the ratio of acid oxides of metals to base, is greater than one (Ural and Onur, 2001). Contrary to upper Kislakoy coal, CaO content of lower Kislakoy coal is very low, grinding resistance is high and base:acid ratio of ash is smaller than one. Modified Impact Strength Index (MISI) tests are used to determine the grindability of the Elbistan coals (Ural, 1999)."

Este trabalho tem por objetivo principal sintetizar e caracterizar nanopartículas de ferro de valência zero (nFVZ) para degradação de substâncias recalcitrantes, através de Processos Oxidativos Avançados. A primeira etapa consiste na sintetização nFVZ, através da reação utilizando reagentes ferrosos, com o agente redutor borohidreto de sódio, em condições controladas (pH, temperatura e velocidade de agitação do sistema). Agentes complexantes e dispersantes, como o ácido cítrico e o etilenoglicol, respectivamente, foram utilizados durante a sinterização para avaliar a variação da formação do tamanho das partículas obtidas. A caracterização foi realizada através dos ensaios de distribuição de tamanho de partículas, microscopia óptica interfacial e microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET). Foi observado que a concentração de ácido cítrico de 0,009 mols e o volume de 100 mL de etilenoglicol, mostraram-se como os melhores valores obtidos. Todavia o ácido se tornou um interferente na reação ao ser utilizado com o SDS. Os resultados da microscopia eletrônica de transmissão comprovam que as partículas obtidas estão na escala nanométrica.

Some of the significant facts that will affect the supply and demand for metals during the next few decades are given in this presentation. This is important because the only hope for intelligent guidance of the national destiny depends upon presenting a consistent and accurate picture of basic problems. The metals problems now fomenting are only slightly less important than those precipitating the energy crisis. Admittedly, it is difficult to generate serious thinking on this subject when the world is enjoying easy access to all metals at modest prices. This is possible because of the current world capacity to over-produce, and United States credit standing, at least up to now, has permitted buying freely on world markets. Although both these vital conditions are subject to change, there is little doubt that if the U.S. financial house is kept in order, we can muddle along for a while on a generally expanding, metal-based economy. But should our credit standing be permitted to collapse, or should there be a tightening of world supplies of metals, the nation would immediately find itself in trouble. Unfortunately, clear signals indicate that both of these conditions are threatening. The metal age started many centuries ago, and with the exception of the noble metals, barely a dent was made in world reserves until the present century. Then, as a result of the pioneering ideas of D. C. Jackling and Paul Gemmel, and the willingness of the McNeals, Penroses and Guggenheims to back ideas with money, a virtual explosion of metal production was propagated throughout the world. It is important to examine the causes of this expansion to determine whether it is a trend that may be sustained or whether it is anomalous and therefore attributable to circumstances not likely to be repeated or continued. This period of plenty is a once only phenomenon. Vast metal resources have been sitting around here for eons, while the world was unaware of or unconcerned with their existence. But when population began to grow exponentially, and ways were discovered to use metals to develop machines to do the work of men and animals, the exploitation of raw materials increased at a staggering rate. And now the realization is dawning that minerals are a wasting asset and are beginning to present supply problems that should begin to be of concern. Two main factors have caused this condition; One is the population growth, and the other is the expanding demand for irreplaceable raw materials as nations become more developed. A group of systems analysts, at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a book Limits of Growth, has warned that at present rates of population growth and resource consumption together with environmental constraints, a point will be reached within 100 years when the world population will become totally incapable of supporting itself. The authors conclude that this end result could be avoided if a planned equilibrium could be established at a lower rate of population growth and resource consumption. Fortunately, there is evidence that the population problem is moderating. The growth rate in the U.S. has decreased from 2.3% per year in 1900 to 1.1% in 1970. But, even at the lower rate, population will double in 70 years. The world rate is greater, and if it continues, world population will rise from 3.5 billion to nearly 10 billion in 50 years. All of these projections are questionable because the dangers of growing population are now being recognized. A marked decrease in growth rate has been noted in the more developed countries-in fact, it was zero in the U.S. in 1972. The other factor affecting consumption of raw materials is the increase in per capita use of most items as individuals become more affluent. Many economists believe that developing countries such as China and India represent a vast future potential market; but there are others, with whom the author agrees, who believe over-population tends to stagnate development. Nevertheless, it is a fact that vigorously developing societies increase consumption at a rate far above their population growth rate.

This paper presents a review of research conducted at the University of Waterloo concerned with the application of aluminum alloy sheet and tube in automotive structures and body panels. The research has focussed on formability prediction and results using a range of damage-based formulations. These models include continuum-level damage approaches and, more recently, a so-called percolation damage approach intended to capture microstructural heterogeneity effects on damage development. This paper presents applications of these damage approaches to simulate formability of experiments considering stretch flange panels. The experiments consider drawbead effects associated with the bend/unbend deformation as the material flows through the drawbead. Recent work on simulating in situ X-ray tomography experiments that capture damage evolution during tensile deformation will also be reviewed.

PRODUCERS of alloy steels recognize the importance of chemical composition in rela-tion to the hot-working properties and the typical surface defects found in their prod-uct. Each analysis of steel has its own peculiar characteristics. Under conditions of standard mill practice each analysis is susceptible to certain types of defects. Mill practice must be varied to obtain the best combination of surface and internal quality in the product. Chemical composition influences the cast structure and crystallization character-istics of the ingot. It also determines the rate of heating and cooling, the plastic hot-working range, and the phase structure of the steel at various temperatures as well as the tendency toward scale formation and decarburization, This paper endeavors to emphasize the manner in which chemical composition affects the various properties of steel, and to indicate the relative impor-tance of these factors in relation to the hot-working properties and surface charac-teristics of killed steel. The influence of chemical composition may be outlined as follows: I. Effect on the cast structure of steel, including: A. State of deoxidation, and type of inclusions. B. Gas content of steel. C. Freezing point and melting point of steel.

"In this paper, vacuum distillation technology has been employed to study the possibility and regularity of separating copper and enriching lead, silver and other valuable metals from copper- based multi component alloys. The result of experiment indicated the practicability of vacuum distillation dealing with copper base complex multi-component alloy to separating lead and silver, when the vacuum distillation temperature was 1637K, distillation time was 60min; residual gas pressure was 20-30Pa, the removal rate of silver was 95.86%, of lead was 99.63%; the evaporation rate of copper was 0.745%. The removal rate of arsenic, antimony and tin respectively were 83.09%, 48.12% and 24.54%. Vacuum distillation method is applicable for dealing with the copper-based multi component alloys, silver and lead can realize effective recovery.IntroductionCopper generally go with lead mineral, therefore, to remove copper from lead becomes an inevitable link in lead smelting. Dross from removed copper usually contains lead, arsenic, antimony, tin and noble metal silver. In abroad, soda ash-iron dust is adopted to process copper dross of this kind. The outcomes of this process are lead matte, wet lead, scoria smoke dust etc[1~5] The dominant components of all the outcomes are copper and lead. Moreover, in the process of tin smelting, copper contained by-products are produced, such as, crude tin alloy, tin lead electrolytic anode slime and so on. Copper content of all the products are ranging from few percentages to several tens percentage. Those products, no matter merge into main producing process, or separate treatment cost losses of valuable metal. For one hand, the containing of copper of outcomes from pyrogenic attack is less than 50%, for the other hand, a lot of valuable metal need to be processed, which increase the cost of retrieve."

Determining the correct combination of mix components and water for high-density paste backfills with the transport and deposition properties necessary in a mining operation is a difficult task. Rheologic properties cannot be determined without conducting full-scale pumping tests, and data from existing tests are very limited. The following presents the findings of investigations undertaken to determine if paste backfill rheology can be determined using existing techniques and which mix and system variables have the greatest influence on transport pressure loss. Data from lab-oratory-scale pumping tests were used to produce a rheologic model of flow behavior for comparison, and a statistical analysis was conducted to determine the most significant factors affecting transport pressure loss.

Australia was one of the world's principal producers of minerals and metals, and its minerals industry was a leading catalyst in promoting growth of the country. Australia was the world's largest producer of alumina, bauxite, diamond, ilmenite, monazite, opal, rutile, sapphire, and zircon. It was the premier exporter of alumina, coal, ilmenite, refined lead, monazite, rutile, and zircon, and was the second leading exporter of iron ore, after Brazil. Ranking behind China, the United States, the U.S.S.R., the German Democratic Republic, Poland, and the Federal Re-public of Germany, Australia was the seventh largest producer of coal (all grades) in the world. Australia was the fourth largest gold producer in 1988, after the Republic of South Africa, the Soviet Union, and the United States. It was the second largest producer of zinc, the third largest producer of nickel, the fourth largest producer of uranium, and the seventh largest producer of copper. 2 The country's mineral wealth was so extraordinary that it was virtually self-sufficient in most mineral commodities. Endowed with abundant resources of coal, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and uranium, Australia was one of the few market economy countries that was a net exporter of mineral fuels. About 90% of Australia's consumption of crude oil was supplied by domestic production; this was expected to decline significantly about 1990, unless significant new oilfields were discovered.

The problem of strata control has of necessity been prominent in mining, and accounts of individual experience and research abound in the literature of most mining countries. Organized rescarch began in Britain by the formation of a committee, upon the recommendation of the Safety in Mines Research Board in 1923, to investigate methods of reducing accidents from falls of roof in coal mines. This committee examined current practice in supporting underground workings in the principal coal fields, and its findings have been published in the Board's publications.' - Toward the end of these investigations it was suggested by the Chief Inspector of Mines that committees of the several mining institutes be formed to examine the problem in their respective districts. The formation of these committees marked a new phase in research on strata control. The work, though being done in the separate coal fields, followed a scheme outlined by the chief Mining Engineer of the Research Board, and was coordinated by his office. FACTORS INVOLVED The subject is being considered in Britain from two aspects: 1. To provide. by supports, means to prevent falls of fractured ground. 2. TO develop methods whereby the strata can be maintained in the least broken condition and thus make falls less likely. The first aspect is the one that will most likely lead to immediate results from the accident standpoint. It depends largely upon the assimilation of already acquired knowledge regarding the properties of supports and their correct application. The second aspect is perhaps more fundamental, and involves also the properties of the strata and their behavior under the influence of the forces induced by mining. The problem involves many natural factors that cannot be controlled, such as depth, inclination and thickness of seam and nature of the rocks. Other factors, which may be considered to a certain extent controllable, cannot be varied readily and with sufficient frequency to facilitate easy investigation; some of these are: rate of advance of the working face, length of face, direction of the face with regard to cleat and inclination, system and arrangements of rock packing behind longwall faces. In any given case the very many factors present have a mutual influence upon the effects produced in the mine. For example, a study of the effects of rate of advance cannot be done without considering the effects of other factors such as nature of strata, direction of face and quality and arrangement of supports. "The valuation of mineral properties in the U.S. is only partially regulated. The regulations which have jurisdiction or impact appear to have such mainly as a consequence of unintended fallout, since the regulations were designed for other purposes. Court case history can also be important. The combined results are a mixture of bad and good, with important lessons to be learned.Since 1981, the Securities and Exchange Commission has prohibited U.S. listed companies from reporting quantitative estimates of mineralization and the value of mineralization, other than proven and probable reserves. This results in the minerals appraiser (valuator) working with a shortage of data in his everyday work, both on the subject property and in sales analysis.Between 1989 and 1995, all 50 states and essentially all Federal agencies adopted the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) for real property appraisals (valuations). The major national appraisal societies also require their members to abide by USPAP. A significant portion of minerals appraisals must now follow these standards. This paper will discuss the content of USPAP. It provides a very good framework for the valuation of a minerals property or a mine, both as real property and as a business. However, the credentialing standards for real property appraisers are now prohibitive for minerals appraisers."

Despite the fact that a great many industrial processes depend on efficient contact between a gas stream and a bed of broken solids for their operation, the data in the literature are very meager. Several investigations3 have been undertaken, but the work has been limited in scope and application. BUREAU OF MINES PROGRAM OF RESEARCH For the past 10 years the United States Bureau of Mines has been engaged in research with the object of formulating a more or less complete quantitative theory of the workings of the iron blast furnace. Obviously, in order to do this one of the essentials is to have considerable definite information on the laws of gas flow through beds of broken solids. This report in a brief summary of the experimental work on the problem which has been done at the North Central Experiment Station. The complete report with more detailed tabulation of the data and explanations of the experimental procedure is in process of publication in the form of a bulletin.

Global practice in hydrometallurgical production of copper cathode by electrowinning is reviewed, based on individual plant operating data for 2018. Data from 29 plants were collected, representing 38% of world cathode copper production. Similar surveys were carried out in 1997, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2013. This survey includes analysis of historical and current data. Evolving trends in operating conditions and performance, as well as equipment design and process technology choices, are analysed and differences in operating practices with location are assessed. Examples of recent technology and operational choices to increase productivity, improve copper quality, and decrease electrical energy consumption are discussed. Significant project expansions, particularly in Africa, and the consolidation of numerous small Chinese operations are also presented. INTRODUCTION Global trends and operating practices in copper electrowinning (EW) in 2018 are reviewed and evaluated. Similar world and African surveys were carried out in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007, and 2013 (Robinson, Davenport, & Jenkins, 1997; Jenkins, Davenport, Kennedy, & Robinson, 1999; Davenport, Jenkins, Robinson, & Karcas, 2001; Robinson, Garbutt, & Davenport, 2002; Robinson, Davenport, Jenkins, King, & Rasmussen, 2003; Robinson, Davenport, Moats, Karcas, & Demetrio, 2007; Robinson, Sole, Sandoval, Moats, Siegmund, & Davenport, 2013). Contributing operations included sites from the USA and Mexico (9), Chile and Peru (6), Laos (1), Kazakhstan (1), and Africa (9). Despite fewer contributions compared with past experience, this survey nevertheless represents 2018 copper EW cathode production of 1.76 Mt, or about 38% of world production of 4.64 Mt (International Copper Study Group, 2017). This drop in permission to contribute is attributed to the more competitive nature of the industry and unprecedented production pressures; furthermore, several operations in Australia have shut down, while large operations that are currently commissioning or ramping up to full production in Africa and Asia declined to participate. Of the Chinese operations, which represent an increasingly important proportion of global electrowon cathode copper, particularly in Africa, only Tenke Fungurume (Democratic Republic of Congo; DRC) participated in this survey.

Mr. F. W. Gray: It is not my intention to read my paper as it is too long, so I will touch only on the high lights. The Sydney field is the most favourable example of undersea coal mining that exists, and I have not been able to find anything like it elsewhere. The nearest approach to it is a field in England where the Whitehaven collieries are operating, but it has a lot of faults. The net result of these faults so far met with in the seaward advance of the workings has been to increase, by something over 100 feet, the gain in depth of cover, in a distance of approximately three and three-quarter miles. In the Sydney field there are no faults of any consequence. On the east side, the English measures rise. In Australia the sea bottom fell and the cover became too light. On Vancouver Island the coal ran out, and in Japan the seams are steep and contorted. The Chilian fields resemble our own to some extent. An inundation of two collieries took place there some time ago, due, it is said, to the rise workings being allowed to approach the sea bottom too closely in the vicinity of a fault. The Cape Breton undersea field has been proved over a frontage of about thirty miles and has been attacked and penetrated for a considerable distance along that front. We have passed the prospecting stage and now generally use developed land areas as points of attack to win the undersea coal. Of our mining under the sea, it can be said that, with the exception of No. 1-B and Princess colliery, Sydney Mines, no real attempt has been made to win the undersea coal.

This report contains Bureau of Mines analyses of 291 samples of crude petroleum from the Gulf Coast Area of Louisiana and Texas. Included are 65 analyses from 51 Louisiana fields and 226 analyses from 216 Texas fields. Analyses from the Texas fields include 90 from 58 Upper Gulf Coast fields, 47 from 28 Middle Gulf Coast fields, and 89 from 40 Lower Gulf Coast fields. The analyses represent fields that produced 1,000 barrels or more per day during at least one of the years 19.57 through 1961, with the exception of 23 analyses from the Texas fields. The fields considered are listed by state and geographical groupings, with field names arranged alphabetically within each grouping. The tabulation also includes information concerning the geological sources of the samples. General characteristics of the crude oils and analytical and computed data determined from the analyses are summarized. Crude oil production data are given for the fields for 1960 and 1961 and are cumulative through 1961.

The approach to the disposal and storage of mine tailings is slowly evolving. Tailings disposal has been based on minimising short-term capital and operating costs, with rehabilitation costs discounted by the application of a high discount factor in a net present value approach to accounting. This has led to the widespread adoption of surface tailings storage facilities (TSFs) to store slurried tailings delivered by robust and cheap centrifugal pumps and pipelines. Depending on the site climate, rate of rise of the tailings, nature of the tailings and the extent to which supernatant water is removed from the surface TSF, the tailings may or may not dewater, densify and gain strength. High rates of rise of dilute tailings to a facility used to store both tailings and supernatant water results in a wet, low-density, soft tailings deposit that not only occupies a large storage volume but also presents rehabilitation difficulties. A low tailings density results in high containment wall costs, very high rehabilitation costs and a low potential for future land use or ecological function. Overall, the cost of slurried tailings disposal, thought to be low, is actually high. However, low rates of rise, even of dilute tailings, in a dry climate with efficient supernatant water removal can produce a dewatered, high-density, stiff tailings deposit that may occupy a large footprint but to shallow depth that is relatively easy to rehabilitate. There are advantages in dewatering tailings in the processing plant to recover process water and chemicals, facilitate tailings disposal in a more solid form and facilitate rehabilitation. However, the cost of dewatering in-plant can be high, and the process water may not lend itself to reuse. There are also advantages in removing supernatant water to facilitate solar and wind drying of exposed tailings, although water is lost to evaporation and the dried tailings may best be harvested prior to inundation by fresh tailings or rainfall run-off. This paper discusses the background and trends towards the elimination of conventional surface slurried TSFs, with examples presented of the management of black coal and other tailings, including those that are clay mineral-rich.CITATION:Williams, D J, 2015. The increase in f.o.b. mine prices of coal from $5/ton to over $18/ton in five years [1] has increased the significance of transportation costs. Coals produced in the vicinity of the consumer bear a much lower transport cost than those produced in the west. This differential may be used for flue gas desulfurization, other cleaning, or further processing of local coals. To the extent that western coals are cheaper to produce and have a lower sulfur content, they offset the locational disadvantage. To the extent that they have a lower heating value, the disadvantage is exercabated. Given the other conditions, an accurate analysis of transport costs will help suggest the location of coal mining and the moue of transport both transport costs and tariffs have risen. Together they have increased delivered coal prices, altered the balance between the use of coal and other fuels, helped to alter the location of mining activity, and put pressure on consumers to examine the cost effectiveness of alternative transport modes. Transportation options for long distance coal movements include rail, barge, pipeline, and EHV transmission lines. A summary of system parameters is shown in Table 2.1. Barge transport, pneumatic and slurry pipelines are discussed elsewhere in this report. Together with EHV, they have been the subject of previous studies [2,3,4]. Slurry pipelines have been shown to be especially useful where rails are not available [2] but the technical problems of dewatering, handling, and utilization of lines [5] remain unresolved. They are discussed in Section 3. Barge transportation depends on the location of the mine and consumer with respect to the waterway system. One drawback of barge shipment is interruptions due to winter, and low or high water conditions. Mine mouth power generation followed by EHV transmission of over 500 miles has been shown to be the most expensive means of delivering an equivalent amount of energy to consumers [2].

Among all pure metals, copper has the second highest thermal and electrical conductivity, next to silver. These properties coupled with a reasonable cost, make copper ideal for use in metallurgical vessels as a conductor of electrical current, as well as a lining material and protector of refractories and steel superstructures. Treatments of copper to address it’s softness and low melting point, specifically hard surfacing and calorizing, will be discussed. This paper will cover the evolution of copper to its current form, offer comparisons to other materials, and theoretical and empirical evidence on its superior performance in metallurgical vessels such as blast furnaces, basic oxygen converters and electric arc furnaces. Some case studies will be provided and finally a brief summary.

A Samarco Mineração utiliza combustível sólido para geração de energia térmica nas pelotas de minério de ferro. Este insumo torna possível a redução da utilização de gás natural na etapa de queima nos fornos de endurecimentos e ainda melhora a qualidade física das pelotas. O tamanho das partículas é chave para eficiência do processo e a cominuição destes combustíveis é realizada nas plantas de moagem da empresa, tanto para o antracito quanto para o coque verde de petróleo. Tradicionalmente, um dos principais itens de controle de moabilidade do insumo é o HGI (Hardgrove Grindability Index), que avalia a dureza do combustível sólido no processo de moagem. Porém, este parâmetro não reflete as dificuldades produtivas encontradas nas plantas de moagem da Samarco Mineração. Portanto, foi desenvolvida metodologia através de uma modificação da equação proposta por Bond para avaliação energética de moagem. A lei de Bond tem origem empírica e considera que a energia consumida na cominuição é proporcional ao comprimento das fissuras iniciais que se desencadeiam na quebra das partículas. A metodologia proposta, no presente trabalho, avalia com maior representatividade as dificuldades encontradas na cominuição destes insumos. Ainda, testes em planta piloto de moagem de combustíveis sólidos foram realizados para validação da abordagem.
