This report summarizes Bureau of Mines laboratory tests of four tungsten¬-bearing materials of various grades, The test work has demonstrated that the dry reaction between sodium carbonate and scheelite is best conducted at 900° C. or a few degrees less. The sodium carbonate requirement, in addition to the stoichiometric equivalent of the scheelite, is in some inverse relationship to the grade of tungsten in the ore. Residence time and particle size exert a definite but minor control on the reaction. Pressure-digestion tests on an impure concentrate indicate the technical feasibility of extraction by this process. INTRDUCTION Over 100 years ago Oxland discovered that tungstic oxide could be removed from wolframite and converted to a soluble form by reacting the mineral with a soluble alkaline salt at elevated temperatures. He patented this discovery, and this patent 4/ since has been the basis for most tungsten extraction. Much literature exists on this process and its modifications, and the characteristics and possibilities of the reaction are quite well defined.

ABSTRACT With the gold industry processing more complex ores, the online measurement and control of cyanide addition to the gold leaching circuit has become more critical. This paper compares the two commonly employed ‘free’ cyanide online analysis methods (amperometric and potentiometric endpoint silver nitrate titration) with the rhodanine endpoint silver nitrate titration and ion selective electrode methods common at site laboratories. Measurement differences between these methods are presented and discussed for cyanide solutions containing copper and zinc with varying cyanide to metal ion ratios. The resulting cyanide available to leach gold is also compared using these measurement techniques.

In different nonferrous metal-producing industry sectors, the impurity element iron has to be removed from the process solution. Examples for the arising residues are jarosite or goethite precipitates from nickel or zinc production but also red mud from aluminum production. Regardless of environmental concerns, the material is landfilled in almost any case, although valuables such as indium, silver, nickel, or zinc are present in considerable amounts. Within the presented research, a low carbon dioxide emitting multi-metal recovery from such iron-containing residues by means of a selective chlorination extraction has been fundamentally evaluated by experiments but also by comprehensive thermodynamic calculations. The paper summarizes the thermodynamic fundamental concept exploited to separate the dominating iron matrix from the valuable elements and shows verification experiments in a lab size of several grams. Through thermodynamic calculations and smallscale experiments with pure metal oxides and sulfates, it has been proven that the metal chlorides AlCl3∙ 6H2O, FeCl3∙ 6H2O, and MgCl2∙ 6H2O are viable and effective reactants for chlorination. In trials with actual industrial iron precipitation residues from the zinc industry, especially, the use of MgCl2∙ 6H2O and FeCl3∙ 6H2O leads to high extraction rates for the investigated valuable metals Ag, Au, Bi, Cu, In, Pb, Sn, and Zn.

The engineer tries to be exact in all his measurements; he should measure his language with similar exactness. The technical term is a word of precision. It is not only precise, it is a word-saver. To the unscientific the earth is "a ball slightly flattened at the poles, something like an orange". To the scientific it is "an oblate spheroid". A similar contrast between the precision of the technical term and the vagueness of common words is afforded by a conversation between Ivanhoe and Rebecca: "' What device does he bear on his shield?' asked Ivanhoe. 'Something resembling a bar of iron, and a padlock painted blue on a black shield.' 'A fetterlock and shacklebolt azure', said Ivanhoe "-using the technical terms of heraldry. It is good style in writing, however, to adapt your manner of expression to the intelligence and experience of the person or persons to whom the writing is addressed. The description of a mine should be worded differently according as it is intended to inform a mining engineer, a director, or a bishop. REMEMBER THE READER. It is as incorrect to write in a technical way for a non-technical reader as to write in a popular way for a technical or scientific reader. That style is best which enables the writer to place himself in the closest mental touch with his reader, to establish the maximum of sympathetic understanding. Let your precision be\ proportioned to your accuracy. You should not try to be precise in matters that do not admit of

"Mutmansky, J.M. and· Lijun Xu, 1989. Some observations on particulates collected in underground coal mines using diesel and non-diesel equipment. Min. Sci. Technol., 9: 207-218.The results obtained when sampling twenty underground coal mine sections, each in a different mine, are outlined. The sampling effort was oriented toward a detailed characterization of coal mine dusts and thus eight-stage Anderson Model 298 impactors were used as the primary collection instrument. This instrument allowed a fairly detailed size distribution for each of the particulates sampled. Because four of the mines used diesel outby equipment and/or diesel shuttle cars at the face, it is possible to make some comparisons of the particulate distributions in diesel versus non-diesel mines.One of the more interesting results is the pattern that exists in mines lising diesels only for outby utility haulage. Particulates in these mines seem to be consistently heavy in the fine size ranges, perhaps being of significant concern to the industry. While no definite conclusions can be drawn from the limited data, a more detailed study of particulates may provide a better picture of particulate loadings.IntroductionThe subject of particulate emiss1ons from underground diesel equipment is currently a very important topic as health concerns and regulation of diesel particulate emissions have created new environmental problems for mine operators. The amount of particulate matter originating from diesels has not been extensively measured and problems of differentiating coal and mineral dust from diesel particulates make existing data questionable.However, it is necessary to make an assessment of the problem in order to solve it. It is known that particulates from diesel engines are solid aerosols formed in the combustion process. Technically, this places the particles in the category of fumes. It is also known from tests where no mineral dust could be a factor in the measurements that about 90% of diesel particles are less than 1 µm in aerodynamic diameter [3]. To measure the diesel component of a coal/diesel particulate to measure, Johnson et al. [2] have developed procedures for utilizing laser Raman spectroscopy. The determination of diesel content in a coal/diesel mixture is difficult due to the chemical similarity of the two organic materials. However, laser Raman spectroscopy, which is often used for identification of organic materials, has potential if the Raman spectra for the two materials are different and unique. The study concluded that an accuracy of ±~% could be achieved for mixtures containing up to 55% diesel particulate. The method is relatively complex and would need further development for routine application."

Several case histories from Glencore’s Sudbury Operations show how passive seismic monitoring data is used for geotechnical decision making. The data comes from three different seismic arrays monitoring two open stoping deposits, and a narrow vein cut and fill/blasthole operation. Mining depths range between 1000 to 1680m below surface. The deposits are hosted in hard igneous rocks typical of the Sudbury basin, with characteristically high horizontal stress (approximately 1.8 times the depth of overburden). Rockbursting is the main geotechnical risk, due to the strong brittle nature of the rock and local high mining extraction. Fault related seismicity includes both fault slip events, and the stress channelling effect as the mining front approaches a major fault structure. Planar data trends generally line up with known faults and often indicate early stage fault activation. The structures are risk ranked based on their seismic response. This has been particularly useful at the Nickel Rim South Mine (NRS) where the structural fabric (jointing and small-scale faulting) is generally parallel to the more through going faults. The persistence of structures is difficult to measure, and the NRS faults generally have low offsets and thin gouge. The visual difference between the more persistent structures that occasionally generate large seismic events (up Mw 2.9 to date) and localised joints/slips is often minor. The seismic monitoring data clearly shows the more active structures. This information is highlighted on mine plans to help guide enhanced ground support and seismic re-entry protocol barricade locations. Pillar loading/yielding is a key element to the blasthole operations where a primary/secondary mining sequence is used. The secondary pillars are mined in a yielded state with just-in-time development. An example of the seismic signature of a secondary stope is shown with emphasis on the need for high location accuracy given the stope widths of 12.5 to 15m. The ratio of the shear wave energy to primary wave energy (Es/Ep) has long been used as a method to estimate source mechanisms; the higher the ratio, the more likely the event is fault slip versus rock fracturing. Data sets are filtered on Es/Ep ratios to highlight both fault slip populations and stress fracturing mechanisms. Examples of seismic data quality checks, high stress development, and re-entry protocols are also shown in the case histories.

There was no need for the people of Cleveland to ask “Where does the raw sewage go? We want to know!” because it was clear. The raw sewage was being discharged into Lake Erie during heavy rainfall events due to the outdated design of the combined sewer system. In efforts to resolve this ongoing issue for the City of Cleveland, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District developed Project Clean Lake in collaboration with the US EPA. Project Clean Lake is a 25-year, $3 billion program consisting of seven large-diameter CSO storage tunnels to be constructed beneath the city’s existing infrastructure. The first four tunnels have been completed using traditional hard rock TBM excavation methods. The fifth tunnel, the Shoreline Storage Tunnel Project, presents unique challenges and complexities as it will be the first large-diameter EPB TBM to dig under the City of Cleveland. The project itself consists of one tunnel drive 14,100' (2.7 miles) in length, two pipe jacking tunnels, three large slurry wall shafts, two diversion structures, and three regulator reconstructions. Upon completion of the project, 12 permitted CSO locations along Lake Erie will be taken offline, reducing overflow volumes by approximately 350 million gallons per year. This paper will discuss the current status of construction and the chosen means and methods, including the myriad of nuanced differences between hard rock and EPB TBM tunneling methods. Particular attention will be given to the site preparation, setup, and organization; TBM assembly; and TBM launching practices.

The Tropicana deposit was discovered in 2005 after AngloGold Ashanti followed up an unexplained gold-in-soil anomaly. Discovered in a remote, barely-explored area of Western Australia not previously thought prospective for gold, Tropicana is the most significant gold find in Australia for more than a decade. The new, large scale open pit gold mining operation will produce an annual production of around 330 000 to 400 000 oz over a ten year mine life mining around 60 Mt/a.Process plant construction started in early 2012 and is due to finish in the December 2013 quarter. The mining contract was awarded to Macmahon Holdings (Macmahon) and mining commenced in July 2012 using conventional drill and blast, truck and excavator open cut methods.As a construction and start-up project in a greenfields location, the establishment of mining activities at Tropicana Gold Mine (TGM) involves the implementation of technical and operational systems, including the mining contract. Some of these systems and likely challenges were identified during earlier studies, while others were not foreseen until they were encountered. Alternatively, the time frames around implementation change depending on the changing knowledge of the project and industry environment. These systems include those common to the industry and those specific to the operation and location.This paper examines the implementation and development of a number of the systems specific to the establishment of mining operations, including the history, process and some outcomes. Although expected to be discrete systems to implement, they become interdependent. First in a projected series on the use of flexible liners for support of underground mine openings, this report presents information obtained from an extensive review of the literature on this subject. It also includes results of some preliminary test work by the Bureau of Mines. Investigations thus far indicate that flexible liners offer numerous advantages over rigid-type sup-ports, By deforming in the direction of the applied stress, the stresses are redistributed from the liner to the surrounding material. The corresponding buildup of passive resistance in the direction of diametric extension causes an equalization of stresses around the liner, thereby enabling the liner to carry loads in a more efficient manner. However, additional experimental data are needed to establish design criteria that will permit maximum utilization of the flexible liner concept in mining. Testing of small-scale models, accompanied by measurement of free-field stresses in material surrounding the model, is recommended as the most suit-able approach to the problem. The experimental procedures necessary to such an approach are outlined in detail and a statistical design for the experiments is proposed. The report also describes a device developed by the Bureau for measuring free-field soil pressures to 1,000 psi and a technique for evaluating the response of the device.

In 1996, bath smelting technology for lead recovery from concentrates and secondary materials was introduced in Nordenham to replace the common sinter plant/shaft furnace operation. Since start-up, a continuous improvement of equipment and operation lead to a steady increase of capacity and plant availability. The decision to skip the reduction stage for slag treatment now allows the treatment of 200000 t/a feed materials with a secondary fraction of up to 70 %. The main feed source for the furnace is automotive battery recycling, which offers oxide paste and metallics to be molten under oxidizing conditions in the lance fired furnace. The lead bullion is transferred to the refinery, where copper, silver and other impurities are removed. Silver is recovered as doré quality. All loopings are recycled to the BSF. Inert feed material is collected in a so-called lead concentrate of metallurgical origin, the primary slag, which is sold. It is rather a valuable feed material for further processing than a slag The off-gas is cooled in a flux-flow system, entering then an electrostatic dust precipitator. Having passed a further washing and cooling system, SO2 is oxidized and collected and sold as concentrated sulphuric acid. The presentation will cover a review of the start-up phase, the development of significant production parameters over the last years and actual production routes and figures. A comparison of environmental data between new and old applied technology is made.

The C. E. Weed concentrator treats 51,000 tons per day of 0.5% to 0.7% copper ore received from the Berkeley Pit, the Continental East Pit and the Butte underground mines. Improved operating techniques and conversion from semi-autogenous secondary grinding to ball milling have increased tonnage from an original design of 42,000 tpd. Separate treatment of sands and slimes, with recovery of soluble copper from the slimes, has increased total copper recovery. Concentrator tailings are pumped 600 vertical feet and 20,000 horizontal feet for disposal.

Red mud (RM) is a solid waste product generated during alumina refinery process, and is usually stored in SFs (SFs) because it canÆt be disposed of easily. In this paper, environment degradation caused by RM-SFs was systematically assessed by the method of single factor pollution index based on the analysis data of water, soil and atmosphere sampled around one newly-built and one decommissioned RM-SFs, which are managed by an alumina production company in China. The results revealed that the ambient environment around RM-SFs is seriously polluted by alkali and mercury (Hg). The pH value of RM leachate, surrounding surface water and groundwater are all higher than the limit of water quality standards in China. And as a possible result of overflowing of high alkaline leachate, soil pH value for the decommissioned SF decreases with increasing distance between the sample collection points and the closest side of RM storage facility (RM-SF). Total Hg concentrations in RM leachate, surrounding surface water and groundwater all exceed Grade III limits of ChinaÆs Environment Quality Standards for Surface Water and Groundwater. Stopewall or room closure can be a problem in nining operations. In some mines, wall closure causes ore passes and nanways to collapse when they are enclosed in nine fill. When this phe- nomena occurs, heavy ground and, or, rock bursts frequently happen. Often, ground problems become progressively worse as mining in the stope block progresses toward the upper level. The sill and pillars in the level above may experi ence heavy ground and bursts. Sometimes the conditions get so bad in the stope that it is unsafe to mine the ore, so the stope is abandoned and the ore is lost.

A research project was carried out on a gold mine in the Vaal River region of South Africa (Witwatersrand Basin) to evaluate the effect of two particular aspects of rockbolt installation – the angle of inclination of the bolt relative to the orientation of the rock surface, and the protruding length of the bolt – on the mine’s gully support system. A keyblock analysis approach indicated that these factors do not have an adverse impact on the stability of the strike gullies. This was confirmed by extensive empirical data collected from the case study mine. While safety is the primary concern, cost saving opportunities can be realized through reconsidering historically inherited support standards that are perceived to be correct and appropriate. The research described in this paper sets forth a practical approach, that is easy to implement and repeatable, to evaluate the role of rockbolts in stoping gullies.

THIS CHAPTER reviews the highlights of developments in mining technology during 1956 and presents a special report on the design of mine openings in stable ground. This special report is presented each year in an endeavor to stimulate use of the scientific approach to the solution of problems related to mining technology. Assuming that the literature on mining technology reflects trends in mining, it appears that two areas of activity were given most attention in 1956. One was research on mining technology,4 and the other was improvement of transportation, particularly trackless transportation, both at surface and underground mines.

Without a doubt, the scope of China?s coal boom has been nonstop. Despite the world economic slowdown, China?s year-on-year gross domestic product (GDP) jumped 10.3 percent year-on-year in 2010, boosted by a faster than expected 9.8 percent expansion in the fourth [ ] quarter. And, the first quarter of 2011 expanded another 9.7 percent. According to a frequently cited statistic, the country is building two mid-sized coal plants each week. This amounts to a yearly increase equivalent to the entire power grid in the United Kingdom. China?s coal production was doubled in the last 10 years, from 1.044 Gt (1.15 billion st) in 1999 to 3.2 Gt (3.52 billion st) in 2010. This is 3.2 times the U.S. production (986 Mt or 1.085 billion st) and nearly half (46.3 percent) of the world?s total coal production (6.91 Gt or 7.6 billion st). This rapid increase of demand for coal has made China the world?s largest coal importer in 2009. With the economic situation improving, this trend is expected to continue.
