As the number of driven concrete piles with Embedded Data Collectors increases, it has become possible to compare the widely used Beta Method to assess pile damage (using the change of pile impedance) with the so-called Measured Pile Integrity (MPI) method (a combination of two approaches using both the change of pile impedance and the change in pile pre-stress levels). After a brief introduction of both methods, this paper presents the outcome of that comparison based on data from more than 400 concrete piles driven in Florida, which brings into question the reliability of any damage assessment method based solely on the change of pile impedance (such as the Beta Method), especially to detect damage near the pile toe. Moreover the paper demonstrates the need to re-assess the damage classification used for the Beta Method as well as the use of Pile Driving Analysis (PDA) to detect pile toe damage.

Low strain dynamic tests are performed to evaluate the structural integrity of driven or cast-in-place concrete piles. This type of testing requires minimal pile preparation, and is simply performed by attaching an accelerometer to the pile head and striking the pile head with a hand held hammer. The measured data is processed by a dedicated system, inspected for wave reflections, and interpreted based on one dimensional wave propagation theory. Piles are normally tested shortly after installation so that problems can be identified early and corrective measures taken before construction of the superstructure. However, evaluation of existing foundations is occasionally required. Often, pile installation records are not available rendering impossible any rational foundation reanalysis. This paper discusses three case histories where low strain dynamic measurements allowed determination of pile lengths and structural integrity under existing structures where pile heads were not accessible.

Spring stiffness of soil and rock at different depth is often required for a pile structural model. If the pile is rested in multiple layers of soil, then it is rather more complex to simulate the soil in a structural model. The spring stiffness will vary based on density of soil strata over the depth. When a pile is socketed in weathered rock followed by a soil layer, a sudden change in subgrade modulus can influence the pile deflection drastically. Determination of soil spring and simulation of the pile in this condition required correct interpretation of subgrade modulus. The conventional approach of pile spring calculation underestimates the spring stiffness by ignoring underlaying stiffer layers. A finite difference method (FDM) of analysis can reasonably estimate the p-y of soil / rock based on subgrade modulus of each layer. However, the transition between the layers can be better simulated as per the deflection pattern of the pile. The lateral deflection of the pile is mainly dependent on the stiffness of soil layer surrounded by the pile. Generally, the lateral influence of a pile varies from 4D to 6D depending on the soil type. Therefore, soil spring stiffness around the pile would require special attention of a Geotechnical engineer to avoid uncertainty in the prediction of pile behaviour. In this paper, emphasis has been given to develop an approach for pile spring stiffness design. A standard software program LPile has been used to develop p-y curves of soil and rock layers at different depths and then converted to soil/ rock springs over the depth. Modulus of Subgrade Reaction as given in IS 2911 (Part2) was also used to correlate the spring value for different type of soil. Obtained analytical results were compared with full scale field trial for lateral deflection of pile. A good agreement between these two approaches has been established. The effect of soil structure interaction in the structural model shall be simulated by assigning an equivalent vertical and horizontal soil spring, which is developed by Winkler’s soil spring approach. A simplified design principle for calculating the pile spring is discussed in this paper. This approach has been extensively used in Mumbai metro elevated line pile design.

THE present paper is a progress report. on an investigation of the physical factors of oil and gas and especially of their sands, I such as-pore space, size of pores or permeability, retentivity, viscosity of the oil, temperature, pressure, thickness and area of the pay sand, water relations, and capillarity. The purpose is to determine as many of these physical factors as possible, and to ascertain the relations existing, directly or indirectly, between these physical factors and the production of oil and gas. As yet only pore space2 and size of grains of pay sands have, been investigated, although an apparatus has been designed to determine the permeability of a sand to oil, water, or gas under definite drops of pressure between the entrance face and exit face of the sample. Messrs. E. W. Shaw, R. Van A. Mills, D. Dale Condit, G. B. Richardson, G. C. Matson, and C. H. Wegemann collected the samples upon which the physical determinations were made. Acknowledgment is made to my colleagues of the United States Geological Survey for many suggestions and criticisms; to Mr. Mills for the production data given of the oil wells from which some of the samples were collected; to Mr. A. The radioactive isotope radium 226 is a contaminant of potential concern in effluent waters from metal mining operations in Canada. Acceptable release levels of radium 226 are governed by Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations. Since radium is invariably present as a companion element in uranium ore, monitoring and controlling of radium 226 is a must for uranium mining operations. Measurement of radium 226 is traditionally carried out through a radiochemical technique involving selective co-precipitation of radium with barium sulphate followed by alpha spectroscopy for quantification. As of 2010, Cameco has also been using an ICP-MS based radium analysis method developed in collaboration with a research team at Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario. This method, which is highly automated and requires significantly less sample handling, with improved turn-around-times, is being used by Cameco site laboratories at the McArthur River and Cigar Lake mines as well as the Port Hope Conversion Facility. This paper compares the benefits and drawbacks of this new method, compared to the traditional alpha counting procedure drawing from almost ten years of field experience.

The quality of refractory bricks and castables could be determined by direct measurements of their material properties such as elastic properties, porosity, density, etc. using conventional static or non-destructive testing (NDT) dynamic techniques. Quality monitoring of refractory linings is much more challenging and complicated. The static methods require undesirable drilling and sample extractions from the furnace structure. A more desirable alternative is the use of NDT techniques for material quality estimation. The Acousto Ultrasonic-Echo (AU-E) technique is a new stress wave propagation approach for monitoring the quality of refractory linings in operating furnaces. In this paper, the conceptual methodology for the AU-E technique is described, the capabilities and limitations are expanded, and the results from two case studies are discussed.

IN concentrating mills, where several millerals are recovered for realisation in more than one product, various systems are used to express the relative economic value of the work done, and, in the hope that it may prove of use to other operators, the writer will describe a system which, in his opinion, is more complete than any other that he has seen published.The controlling factor in all mill work must be based on the economic result represented by the greatest margin possible between the realizable value of the products and the cost of obtaining same.From a mill-man's point of view these are affected by the following factors:1. Metal contents of ore.2. Grade of products.3. Recoveries.4. Working costs.The grade of ore milled is usually outside the mill-man's control, but this may exercise a considerable influence on the grade of his products, metal recoveries, and revenue per ton of ore. This study explores the use of co-collectors to enhance the recovery and determination of rhodium during fire assay with lead collection, followed by acid dissolution using conventional hot plate methods. Rhodium, a critical platinum group metal, poses analytical challenges due to its low natural abundance and complex chemistry. Among the co-collectors tested, palladium and tellurium demonstrated significantly improved rhodium recoveries, ranging between 100% and 120%, whereas silver resulted in poor recovery and higher error margins. These findings highlight that co-collectors can enhance the efficiency and sensitivity of platinum group metal analysis, although their effectiveness is dependent on the chemical interaction with the target element. Acid dissolution was essential to ensure complete digestion of prills prior to analysis, enabling accurate quantification of rhodium. Overall, the findings suggest that palladium and tellurium are effective co-collectors for rhodium determination in fire assay, while silver and lead flux alone are unsuitable. This work provides important insight into optimising fire assay procedures for reliable rhodium analysis, with potential benefits for platinum group metals recovery and economic evaluation.

Gardner[$] THE present known petroleum reserves are limited, and unless important new fields are discovered the Nation will be dependent, in the not too distant future, upon imports or upon synthetic liquid fuels to supplement domestic petroleum supplies. As a national defense measure, it would appear desirable to develop a substitute source of liquid fuels within the borders of the country if new discoveries of petroleum should prove disappointing. Congress undoubtedly had this in mind when it passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (78th Congress, approved April 5, 1944). The act directed the Bureau of Mines to construct and operate demonstration plants for producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal and oil shale, and from forestry and agricultural products. As a part of this program, the Bureau of Mines has built a demonstration plant at Anvil Points, near Rifle, Colo., for retorting the oil shale, and has developed a mine to supply the plant with oil shale. At the beginning of mining operations, the physical qualities of the oil shale, which would have a bearing upon the selection of mining methods and practices for exploiting the deposits, were largely unknown. A comprehensive mining-research program has been set up to determine the best methods and practices to follow to obtain the lowest overall practicable mining cost for producing the oil shale on a large scale. Unusually low mining costs will be necessary for shale oil to be produced commercially. Consideration now is being given to exploiting a series of flat-lying beds 70 ft thick by a room-and-pillar method of three benches with the advance heading at the top. This report is one of a series giving the results obtained in research on mining problems. INTRODUCTION The structure and physical qualities of the oil shale indicate that the 70-ft interval of the oil-shale measure can be safely mined in open stopes; studies indicate that this method would be the most economical one to use.1 As labor will be a major item of expense, the largest equipment that could be operated efficiently in the workings would be required to obtain the lowest practicable mining cost. It was therefore desirable to know the maximum safe span of unsupported rooms and the size of pillars necessary to support the overburden. This paper describes the work done at the Columbia School of Mines Barodynamic Laboratory in determining the maximum safe unsupported roof spans and the minimum safe pillar dimensions for the oil-shale mine at Rifle, Colo.

Eddy current separators have become generally used in waste recycling industry during the last decade. There are many papers dealing with separation processes on eddy current separators, and also many article describes particle trajectory and different particle features affecting particle trajectory. These data are used in modeling as well. Within the frame of R&D project called ‚Fundamental research into the exploitation of the economic development potentials of critical raw materials in international co-operation - CriticEl?, authors are aimed for using Eddy Current Separator (ECS) as a mechanical separation step of high value critical elements recovery of selected WEEE’s like display panels, PCB’s. ECS, equipped with 305 mm wide belt, and a concentric magnetic rotor is used for experiments targeted development of methodology for determining separability of different particles on ECS. The subject of our work was to investigate the behavior of model particles with different shape, conductivity (aluminum and copper), orientation and size in order to separate Al and Cu according to the results of many experiments were carried out in this field. However it looks like that throwing distance of one particle is only possible to describe by a certain distribution for even the same particle within the frame of the same conditions. Sample mean and standard deviation are depending on some of the particle feature and acting forces. The paper is going to draft the first results on the relationship between distribution of throwing distance and particle properties.

The feasibility is demonstrated of reconstructing the volumetric distribution of liberated particles and middlings by use of a damped, weighted least-square regularisation method. This allows a precise mass balance to be obtained around a separation/concentration unit, permitting evaluation of the partition curve (Tromp curve) of the separator. Areal grade measurements are made on polished sections of feed, concentrate and tailings and a kernel-based inversion technique is then used to obtain the volumetric grade distribution of the three assemblages. A plain kernel (number of occurrences) and a weighted kernel (each occurrence counted with its area) are used for the solution. Testing of the method on computer-generated synthetic areal grade measurements indicates that it offers a valid alternative to the tedious conventional procedure of conducting experiments with heavy liquids

"The Lady Loretta lead-zinc deposit in Northwest Queensland, Australia contains an average of 5.9% lead, 17.1% zinc and 97 g/t silver. Ore mineralization is mostly comprised of fairly complex intergrowths of pyrite, sphalerite and galena. Starting in 1998, Noranda Inc., the major joint venture partner of the project, conducted extensive metallurgical test work, which culminated in July - August 2000 in a series of Pilot Plant tests. A common thread to all the metallurgical work has been the deportment of a large portion of silver into non-payable metallurgical products. Average silver distribution from four Pilot Plants shows a distribution of silver in lead concentrate of 28%, whereas silver in zinc concentrate was 49%, and 23% in the final tails.The consistently poor silver recovery as well as the fairly unusual silver distribution, particularly in zinc concentrate, was considered an issue to be thoroughly investigated. A mineralogical plan was devised to determine if these particular metallurgical results were somewhat related to the nature and mode of occurrence of silver carriers. Work was performed to determine discrete silver-bearing minerals and/or silver contained in solid solution in a suite of commonly occurring sulphides. A standard procedure for determining size-specific gravity distributions of fine coal (including the -400 mesh fractions) by sieving and centrifugal sink-float separation is described. The significance of using a centrifugal sink-float technique and the effect of the magnitude of the centrifugal force on the separation of fine coal are confirmed in the present study. The relative merits of cumulative versus incremental sink-float are discussed. The procedure is evaluated quantitatively using data obtained for the products of froth flotation of -100 mesh coal.

AT most smelting plants, forced draft, induced by high stacks or fans, is used to carry the gases away from the furnaces, roasters, or sintering plants. Gases moving under forced draft carry varying amounts of solids in the form of dust and fume. Where the weight of the solids is material, and the metal content high, it is usually profitable to treat the gases to recover these solids. Baghouses, Cottrell treaters, and settling chambers are the common forms of plants used to recover solids from gases. To check on the efficiency of these plants it is necessary to know the volume of gas leaving the plant and the amount of solids carried by the gas. As the volume of gas is equal to the product of the velocity of that gas and the cross-sectional area of the flue, the determination of the volume includes the measurement of the area of the cross section and the determination of the velocity. The velocity is generally measured by means of the Pitot tube and Ellison differential pressure gage, although low velocities are best determined by means of an anemometer. The dust concentration is determined by passing a measured volume of sample through a filter and weighing the dust caught. From this the dust concentration per unit of volume may be calculated. It is necessary to assume that the gas is homogeneous or that each cubic foot of the gas contains the same weight of dust as every other cubic foot. Having the volume of gas passing through a flue per unit of time, and the dust concentration of the gas per unit of volume, the amount of solids may easily be calculated.

Solvent-coated air bubbles in the Air-Assisted Solvent Extraction (AASX) process achieve the dual role of high solvent specific surface area and ease of phase separation. The thickness of the solvent film is of fundamental interest but difficult to measure directly in the process itself. As an approach interferometry (in the UV-vis region) was used to measure the time dependent thickness of a film formed by blowing an air bubble in kerosene-based solvents. The film was stabilized by the presence of 1.5 ppm silicone oil, as employed in AASX. The film appears to comprise two layers; an outer "free" layer of almost constant thickness and an inner "bound" layer which decreased in thickness with time. The bound layer is considered relevant to AASX. For a 20 mm diameter bubble blown in LIX/kerosene solvent the initial thickness was ~ 3 um which decreased over 10 minutes to a final rupture thickness of 500 nm. The bound layer thickness and time to rupture decreased with decreasing bubble size. Correspondence to prior indirect estimates of solvent layer thickness is examined.

That grinding may change a crystalline material both in a physical and in a chemical sense has been shown by a number of authors in recent years. Thus Mackenzie (1) and Bartha (2) reported the effects of careful grinding on muscovite, quartz, gypsum, dolomite, etc. Increase in specific surface produced by grinding implies increase in total energy of a system. Newly produced surfaces are chemically more reactive; dislocations may be introduced during grinding, and existing strain may be released by the same process, as shown by Holt et el. (3) All these changes are easily detected by thermal analysis, but it is not easy to separate the multiplicity of effects registered and to arrive at quantitative interpretations. This paper is an attempt to analyze by the use of thermal analysis some effects produced in grinding. In differential thermal analysis (DTA) one measures all thermal changes occurring in a substance during heating or cooling. Chemical changes, such as decompositions, synthesis, oxidation, reduction, etc., and physical changes such as phase transformations, changes in specific surface and in thermal conductivity, strain release, etc. By thermo gradmetric analysis (TGA) on the other hand only chemical changes involving weight loss or gain are recorded. Similarly gas evolution analysis (GEA) will register only reactions involving gas evolution, including water vapor, and oxidation-reduction. By performing two or all three of these thermal methods of thermal analysis simultaneously and on the same specimen one can separate the different effects registered and by difference evaluate their magnitude.

The jigging of ferrous ore to produce higher-grade products has been practiced for many decades. This is due to easy separation, a beneficial trade- off between operating cost and reduced yield relative to Dense Media Separation (DMS). Jigging becomes prominent for beneficiation of iron ores in the coarser size range. At present drive is towards the use of under bed air pulsed jigs for the beneficiation of ferrous ores. The main advantage is that the under bed air pulsed jigs are capable of generating the large pulse of amplitudes required to fluidize a deep bed of heavy ores particularly lump iron ore up to 40mm size. The major jig parameters effecting the jigging operation are bed height, shape of the pulse, residence time, operating pressure, valve cycle time and water flow rate. With the pulse shape set correctly for optimum stratification rate, even it is still necessary to provide enough residence time, to ensure the difficult material will take time to migrate to the expected layer in the bed. In order to find the Jig Stratification Index (JIS) parameters like bed height, operating pressure, water flow rate, cycle valve time and shape of the pulse were optimized first by conducting various tests. Typical Iron ore samples from Odisha (both lump and fines) were subjected to stratification studies at residence time of 1, 5 and 15 minutes. Jig Stratification Index (JSI) for both lump (0.30) and fines (0.20) were determined by using APIC Jig. The maximum possible JSI was calculated by using heavy liquid separation test (0.42 for lump and 0.24 for fines). It is found that the jig bed JSI is less than the Heavy liquid JSI for both lump and fines. The ratio of Jig bed JSI to the heavy liquid JSI is 0.83 for lump and 0.71 for fines. The JSI and ratio of Jig bed JSI to Heavy liquid JSI are low for fines due to fluid turbulences causing some degree of remixing in the jig bed. The fluid turbulences are more for fines than lump, hence jigging of fines is difficult and challenging. The results of FLAC3D modelling on chromitite Upper Group 2 Reef pillars from the Bushveld Complex of South Africa are described. The model input parameters were determined from laboratory triaxial tests with post-failure measurements. These geomechanical tests were performed on rock materials within the pillars and the immediate pillar foundations. In the models, postfailure behaviour was simulated using the concept of cohesion softening. Models were built to determine the strength and behaviour of pillars with a width-to-height ratio of approximately two. The original research aimed to find a suitable depth below the surface where Impala Platinum Ltd could safely introduce crush pillars; however, the paper only describes the model results: the ideal depth of the crush pillar introduction is not discussed. The results of the modelling are compared with the PlatMine formula for peak pillar strength and with an underground instrumented pillar located elsewhere on the same reef. Some insight into the effects of grid size on strength is also provided. Further underground measurements are recommended to verify the model results
