"The current control method of grate-kiln iron ore oxide pellet production is lack of accuracy and normalization due to the limited detection conditions. Therefore, mathematical models of grate-kiln temperature field are presented. With calculation of gas-particle heat transfer as well as enthalpy changes of moisture evaporation and magnetite oxidation, the thermal history of pellets throughout grate-kiln process can be acquired and used for production status estimation. Taking the calculated results as well as detected data in production as inputs, process parameters such as running speed, fan opening and coal injection rate as adjusting objects, expert system for grate-kiln pellet production is outlined. And the preheating section dominated control strategy is explained. Results of production application show that the stability rate of gas temperature in gas hood of preheating section is increased from 91.0% to 94.2%, compressive strength and first grade rate of pellet are increased by 3.62% and 2.36%, respectively, while FeO content is 18.18% lower. Control guidance of this expert system can solve production anomalies effectively, stabilize grate-kiln iron ore oxide pellet production and improve pellet quality.IntroductionSteel industry in China has developed rapidly in recent years. China’s crude steel production in 2010 is nearly 627 million, which is 44.2% of the world total production. Burden with higher quality is demanded by enlargement and modernization of blast furnaces. And oxide pellet production has become a growing concern. In 2010, the total production of pellet in China is 110 million, and about 60% is produced by grate-kiln process."

The fundamentals of domain knowledge, knowledge base building, system structure, principle of inference mechanism, function of explanation mechanism, application analysis on Expert System of In-situ Leaching of Uranium (ESILU) are described, especially the Dempster/Shafer theory on inexact reasoning, which was used in ESILU, is detailed discussed. The application of in-situ leaching for abstraction of uranium and the analysis of parameters required for evaluation of uranium deposit. the procedure of evaluation of uranium dewsit for the purpose of in-situ leaching as well as the concept related were introduced. For building knowledge base, discussion is emphasized on production rule, which wasused in ESILU, on representation of rules and facts and application as well. From the system menu provided in the paper, the readers will, in a certain content, under- stand the functions of system structure and the way to set up. Several paragraphs are written concentrated on the procedure of backward reasoning and the principle of inference mechanisms combined with knowledge bases. Tracing interpretation and acquisition of knowledge with interactive method, which the system flexibility is considerably strengthened, are the main specific features of ESILU.

"Metallurgy at the Polaris Mine is approaching an impasse, with lead and zinc concentrate grades and recoveries approaching their theoretical maximums. In an effort to increase productivity, plant throughput and operating material costs became a major focus of milling personnel.one method of increasing plant throughput was to minimize flotation circuit upsets by; standardizing operating strategy, decreasing control action response time of operators, increasing training of operators, and providing a more available decision support system for operators.To achieve these goals, Polaris personnel decided to utilize expert system technology to develop a real-time process controller for the flotation circuit which would be capable of justifying its actions to operating personnel.This paper describes the procedures followed in constructing the first process controller in the mineral industry which is based on the principles of Artificial Intelligence.IntroductionThe Polaris Concentrator was constructed in 1980 on a barge in Trois Rivieres, Quebec and towed to its present location on Little Cornwallis Island, North West Territories, about 1450 kilometers from the North Pole. The plant presently treats about 2,800 MTPD of new feed with average feed grades of 3% Pb, 13% Zn and 5% Fe. Current production averages 36,000 tonnes of lead concentrate and 220,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate annually.In an effort to increase the efficiency of the concentrator, the decision was made to implement an innovative control system on the flotation circuit. This system would embody and utilize heuristics ""rules-of-thumb"" gained from operators to make on-line process decisions. It would also justify these decisions on a demand basis."

Computerized, real -time monitoring had its beginning in the U.S. coal industry in the early 1970's. Over the last 10 years, developments in technology have made systems available that are capable of monitoring and controlling many mine parameters that can increase safety and production. However, situations currently exist where computerized monitoring systems are not being utilized to their fullest capability. They produce reams of printed output that are not sorted in a useful format, and human operators are not able to react fast enough in emergency situations tn tile large amount of information that the systems generate. A solution is the application of an expert system as the interface with real-time monitoring. An expert system would use an extensive knowledge base and human-type reasoning ability to make decisions on optimum strategies. Expert systems have been applied successfully to problems in other industries, and could provide significant benefits to mine information management systems. The use of an expert system with real-time mine monitoring is discussed in this paper.

"This paper describes the implementation of an expert system for monitoring and control of the NO. 4 autogeneous mill and spiral circuits at Wabush Mines.This process control system incorporated the mill operating expertize of Wabush Mines operating personnel and was implemented to improve spiral iron recovery and mill productivity by:1. Continuously monitoring the mill power draw and ensuring that the mill feedrate is regulated to prevent damage to the mill motor, while simultaneously maintaining the feedrate at or as close as possible to the maximum feedrate determined by the process supervisor.2. Improving control over the spiral density and feed rate.3. Improving control over both tbe rougher and cleaner wash water.4. Reducing the frequency with which pumps are plugged.5. Allowing modifications to be made easily and quickly to test various operating strategies.This system was installed using COMDALE/C, a real-time Expert System for Process Control. It was readily accepted by the process operators and produces higher production performance in comparison to the other 5 parallel mill lines at a lower power draw."

"SGS implemented two rules-based fuzzy logic expert applications on two grinding circuits operated by Peñoles Group in Mexico. Both expert systems are based on control strategies that push against process constraints to improve throughput. Based on proven methodologies, the projects also required some new approaches that led to permanent changes to the mill control strategy.This paper provides descriptions of the implementation, operation and performance of both expert systems. It also reviews how improved production rates were achieved through the use of a common set of expert technology tools. An overview of the resulting control strategies implemented on the two circuits is presented. The paper also discusses the identification of the process constraints within each circuit and how these constraints are used within the expert systems.INTRODUCTIONMexico-based mining company Peñoles Group and the Advanced Systems group at SGS, formally known as MinnovEX Technologies Inc., collaborated on the implementation of two expert systems in two grinding plants, both located in Northern Mexico.The primary objective of the expert systems was to increase throughput whilst still maintaining the cyclone overflow product size within an acceptable range. The secondary objective was to achieve a high level of utilisation of the expert technology.In order to achieve these objectives, SGS proposed a proven methodology which leveraged the existing operating and technical expertise at site through the client’s involvement in the design and implementation stages. The in-house operating and technical expertise of SGS was also brought to the project and implemented with the client’s approval at all stages. At both sites the final acceptance was defined upon meeting both process and utilization parameters.The development and deployment of rules-based fuzzy logic applications has matured as a technology and consequently, clear definition of process states and their place in the logic structure to control a given circuit are now transferable. The key to the robustness of the control logic depends on selection and tuning rules for maintaining stability and optimizing a given circuit. Application integrators need to have a standardized approach for timely integration and deployment; a critical component to avoid the common critiques that expert applications are idiosyncratic and difficult to maintain."

Mining is a risky business. The cost of exploring for new mineral deposits is high and the success rate of finding one worthy of development is relatively low. And once a deposit is identified, there is no guarantee that it will become a mine. Mining companies have to spend a lot of time and money on due diligence, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, and sustainable development and environmental issues before deciding whether the deposit will become a profitable mine. And then there are the millions of dollars spent in developing the deposit and building a mine. No wonder the mining industry has trouble attracting investment capital. Companies take a large risk in developing reserves and investors take a similar risk in investing in them. So mining companies must be as accurate as possible in determining mineralization that makes it to reserve status. After all, reserves are a company’s most important asset and one of the critical factors analysts and funding sources look at when determining if a mine or mining company is worth the risk.

In this paper, the differential equations governing the mass transport and the electrochemical reaction in a cathode catalyst layer of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are solved based on the polynomial series expansion method. Explicit expressions for the polarization curve as well as for the distributions of oxygen, current density and overpotential are obtained when a quadratic, cubic or quartic polynomial is employed to approximate the oxygen concentration distribution. These kinds of explicit solutions are desirable for MEA design and diagnosis purposes. The comparison between the conventional numerical approach and the explicit solution approach proposed here shows that satisfactory accuracy can be reached by the first four terms of the polynomial series. The effect of the catalyst layer thickness on the accuracy of the obtained explicit polynomial solutions is also discussed.

In a visionary move, the Planning Commission and the Ministry for Planning in Western Australia decided to invite three extractive industry quarry operators, local government councils and State Government departments (Minerals and Energy, Environmental Protection, South West Development Commission) to contribute jointly to study the impacts of blasting on areas surrounding basalt quarries in the Bunbury region of WA. The results of the study will help establish suitable zones in which land uses will be controlled under a proposed Greater Bunbury Region Scheme and in local planning schemes, to minimise conflicting land uses. This paper discusses the blasting program conducted to characterise and model the vibration behaviour of the rock under the effects of pilot-scale and full production blasting, and highlights some of the benefits achievable when a thorough blasting impact program and assessment is conducted at the planning stages of land-use establishment.

"RésuméComme l'exploitation d'un gisement à grande profondeur représente un défi de taille et que la profondeur à laquelle se situe celui d'Ansil varie de 1200 m à 1460 m, nous avons dû mettre en place une infrastructure de surface d'envergure incluant un treuil de production et un chevalement d'une très grande capacité. De même, l'infrastructure sous terre a été proposée en tenant compte de ce fait important; d'ailleurs, l'excavation de deux puits circulaires dont l'un est en beton et acier et l'autre exclusivement en béton en témoigne. De plus, la plupart des cheminées principales qui furent excavées sous terre sont de forme circulaire.L 'exploitation du gisement s'effectue par une méthode chantier ouvert (abattage par longs trous), remblaye immédiatement âpres avec un mélange de roche stérile et ciment. Un taux de minage de 1750 tonnes par jour est requis pour assurer la production.L 'utilisation d'une technologie de pointe tels: les ventilateurs et les portes de ventilation sous terre contrôlées de la surface, un système de relèves macroséismiques, de chargeuses-navettes contrôles à distance, en passant par le dessin et la planification assistes par ordinateur nous permet d'optimiser l'exploitation du gisement Ansil.IntroductionEtant donne la grande profondeur a laquelle le gisement Ansil se situe, no us avons à mettre en place une infrastructure souterraine et de surface d'envergure pour nous permettre d'atteindre nos objectifs d'exploitation.Infrastructure de surfaceLa mine Ansil dispose d'une infrastructure de surface d'importance possédant une grande capacité (Fig. I). Les deux facteurs qui furent déterminant pour le dimensionnement des infrastructures furent le taux d'extraction de 1990 t/jour et la profondeur a laquelle I 'exploitation s'effectue, puis que cette dernière affecte le temps de cycle et la capacité de hissage.La première composante principale de I 'infrastructure de surface est un treuil de production a 2 tambours de 3.65 m de diamètre et de 2.0 m de largeur chacun. Ce treuil de marque Fullerton, Hodgart & Barclay construit en 1970, opère avec 2 moteurs de 930 kW a une vitesse de 700 m/min. et il a une capacité maximale de 32000 kg. Deux câbles d'acier de 45 mm de diarnètre et de 160 000 kg de résistance a la rupture servant au hissage des bennes d'une capacité de 12 tonnes. De plus, un moteur/générateur de 3000 kW (M.G. Set) raccorde au treuil de production sert a stabliser son alimentation électrique."

Entre 1983 et 1997, l'exploitation de la pierre de taille au Québec a été marquée par l'émergence et la consolidation de plusieurs nouvelles variétés de granit, provenant exclusivement ou presque de la Province de Grenville. Le Québec demeure toujours le principal expéditeur canadien de granit dimensionnel, avec des expéditions annuelles représentant près de quatre-vingt-dix pour cent des expéditions totales canadiennes de granit brut et transformé. La production annuelle de granit brut oscille, depuis 1994, autour de cent mille tonnes métriques. Cette production a plus que doublé de 63 000 à 140 000 tonnes métriques entre 1981 et 1990, mais elle a connu une chute importante en 1991 (67 000 tonnes métriques); cependant depuis 1994, elle est en forte progression (Ménard, 1998). En 1983, le granit dimensionnel était extrait de plus de vingt-cinq carrières, dont les trois quarts se localisaient dans la Province géologique de Grenville. Comparativement, en 1997, le Québec comptait trente-sept carrières actives, dont trente-cinq dans le Grenville (Gaudreau et al., 1998). Cette concentration des carrières dans la Province de Grenville s'explique par la demande accrue de nouveaux produits au fil des ans et par le potentiel élevé de découvertes de nouvelles variétés dans cette Province géologique. L'accessibilité au territoire, toujours plus grande, a facilité la mise en production de carrières favorisant la diversification des produits. Le ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec (MRNQ) a consacré depuis 1980, beaucoup d'efforts dans la recherche de nouveaux gisements et de nouvelles variétés. En plus des programmes de subvention destinés aux prospecteurs ou aux compagnies, le ministère a réalisé des campagnes d'inventaire de pierre de taille, de pierre concassée et de pierre d'enrochement pour en connaître le potentiel géologique et à orienter les recherches futures (Nantel, 1983; Nantel et Martignole, 1991; Bellemare, 1995a, b, c, d, e, f, 1997, 1998a and b; Bellemare et Petryk, 1996a, b, c and d). Cette étude donne un aperçu des différentes variétés de pierres extraites dans la Province de Grenville entre 1983 et 1997, les situe dans leur contexte géologique et en localise les principales régions productrices. Le concept du forage horizontal a été développé voilà de nombreuses années. Différents types de plate-formes permettant le forage horizontal depuis une cheminée ont été conçus par divers manufacturiers ou opérateurs miniers. Entre autres, on connaît bien la griffe de montage Alimak à laquelle peut être fixée une plat-forme sur laquelle est montée une foreuse. En 1992, Ross-Finlay a développé sa propre plate-forme de forage qui à notre opinion améliore la flexibilité du concept du forage horizontal, en augmente la productivité et en diminue le coût d?ensemble tout en assurant une sécurité accrue des travailleurs. Tel que montré à la figure 1, la plate-forme employée à la Mine Kiena est composée d?un toit de protection contre les chutes d?objets et de deux passerelles de forage de forme carrée. Le toit et les passerelles sont fixées à une structure de 6.5 m de longueur équipée de deux assemblages de rouleaux (non montrés à la figure) permettant de faire glisser l?ensemble sur des rails Alimak. L?angle du toit et des passerelles peut être ajusté pour des cheminées dont le pendage varie de 65 degrés à 85 degrés.

Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation (Pty) Ltd (RPZC) operates an underground mine at Rosh Pinah in southern Namibia producing zinc and lead sulphide concentrates. It currently mines around 0.7 Mtpa run-of-mine ore containing around 6-10% zinc and 1.5-3.5% lead. As part of past exploration and current intensified exploration, a massive continuous low grade ore body was identified which grades at around 3% zinc equivalent. This ore body is near current mining infrastructure and could be amenable to bulk mining methods. In the present paper a concept is presented on how it could be exploited. As a precursor to exploitation of the low grade a number of enhancements are proposed for the current mining operations including: ? shortening load-and-haul distances by extending the conveyor raise further down the mine in a phased manner and back-filling of waste into mined-out stopes; ? use of mobile crushing plant at the crusher tip, and; ? installation of a system to allow scoops to load directly from stopes into ore passes close by combined with truck loops to haul from these ore passes to the crusher tip. To exploit the low grade ore body the following concepts are proposed: ? open stope mining from two areas at a total rate of up to 2 Mtpa; ? underground pre-beneficiation of mined low-grade ore near the stopes using either dense medium separation or X-ray sorting; ? pre-beneficiated tails back-filled to mined-out stopes and; ? pre-beneficiated product transported to surface by linking into proposed run-of-mine conveying system.

India has sizeable number of small deposits of rare metal bearing minerals namely columbite-tantalite, pyrochlore, beryl, lepidolite, spodumene and rare-earth element bearing minerals monazite and xenotime in different parts of India. Pegmatites, alkali granites, syenites, and the derived gravel and soils are the main source for rare metal and rare earth (RMRE) minerals. The RMRE minerals are classified as prescribed substances under Atomic Energy act of 1962 keeping in view the uses in the nuclear industry. Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is the sole agency responsible for exploration and exploitation of RMRE minerals in India since 1962. The latest technological advancements and applications in the field of space, electronics, communication and nuclear industry using these metals and their products have necessitated to augment the production and resources of RMRE minerals. These minerals play a significant role in the technological and economic development of the country. The light rare earth element bearing mineral monazite is abundant in beach sands and is being commercially exploited by Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL). Columbite-tantalite, the chief source for niobium and tantalum (Nb-Ta) metals present in the pegmatitic gravel are recovered by small mobile beneficiation plants. The cut and fill method of mining adapted is eco-friendly. The processing flow-sheet consists of wet sizing at ½ in and 1mm followed by gravity concentration of sized products utilizing the methods of jigging and wet tabling. The sizing equipment include revolving and vibratory screens and the gravity concentration equipments used are fixed sieve jigs and movable screen jigs for final upgradation. The gravity concentrates are further upgraded by magnetic separation to remove magnetite and ilmenite. The mine areas are reclaimed by filling with coarse size tailings and new plantations. These mobile pilot plants were earlier operated in Bihar mica belt, Jharkhand, pegmatitic areas of Karnataka and Nellore mica belt of Andhra Pradesh and are currently being operated in Bastar-Malkangiri pegmatite belt of Chhattisgarh and pegmatites of Jharsuguda district of Orissa. Beryl, lepidolite, spodumene and cassiterite minerals are the by-products from the pegmatite ores. Fergusonite, samarskite and microlite are the other niobium and tantalum bearing minerals which are also found in pegmatites. Xenotime, the chief mineral of yttirium generally occurs in granites and pegmatites. The rare earth minerals monazite and xenotime get concentrated in the placer sands of rivers and beaches. The occurrence of xenotime in the sands of Siri River and Deo River in Chhotanagpur granitic terrain in parts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are an example. These sands containing 1-2.5% heavy minerals were processed by a mobile plant consisting of sizing equipments like trommel and vibratory screen followed by separation of heavy minerals from -1mm sands with the help of gravity concentration equipments like spirals/shaking tables/sluices. Xenotime and monazite from the pre-concentrate are further separated by magnetic and electro-static methods. The present paper illustrates the pilot plant set up for the recovery of rare metal as well as rare earth minerals. Orebodies occur in an infinite variety of grades, shapes and sizes, and take many millions of years to grow. When extraction starts there is only one possible end -the mine sooner or later will run out of ore and shut down. If the mineral industry is to supply the ever increasing demands of modern civilizations, more and more metals must be found and mined. This will require a never-ending search for ore, and the development of every economic body, large or small. To justify the mining of a small orebody, it first of all must pay its way. If the size of the burden imposed by the capital cost estimates is not carefully worked out, an otherwise promising situation could be killed. The very nature of mining, as a transient industry, re-leases a steady stream of good used equipment, and the trained personnel to install and operate it. All manner of plans and layouts, which can be utilized at a new property, are available. Working these and other economies into the estimates will sometimes make enough difference to give a prospect the green light.

In this paper, a fault detection and identification framework based on feature extraction and topology extraction methods is proposed, and evaluated on a simulated base metals refinery high pressure leaching process. Feature extraction methods included linear and kernel principal component analysis, while process topology information was extracted with linear cross-correlation, partial cross-correlation and transfer entropy. Connectivity maps were constructed to identify possible fault propagation paths to aid root cause analysis. The results indicate that process topology can enhance the fault identification capability of data-based process monitoring methods. The study of the considered base metals refinery pressure leaching process is ongoing, with future work including the creation of a fault library which would lead to further critical evaluation of the proposed fault detection and identification framework.

La Compañía minera Raura es un yacimiento tipo skarn de zinc, plomo, cobre y plata que tiene un solo halo metasomático explotado (Complejo Catuva), además de cuerpos distales de reemplazamiento, vetas y bolsonadas. En ese sentido, los estudios geoquímicos y geológicos a través de la magnetometría y polarización inducida señalan una mayor visión del yacimiento para la búsqueda de nuevos recursos que permitan un enfoque de minería con mayores volúmenes de producción a menores costos y valores de mineral por tonelada. Así también, se ha logrado encontrar un nuevo halo de skarn mineralizado llamado “Franja Hada– Farallón” y una nueva estructura tipo mantiforme llamada “Manto Nadine”, las cuales posibilitan diseñar métodos de explotación masivos tipo taladros largos y pensar en piques de extracción en Raura.

Luego de revisar la data ofrecida por estudios de magmatismo y geoquímica para varios yacimientos epitermales relacionados con grandes complejos volcánicos en el sur y norte de Perú, además de analizar dos grandes complejos volcánicos con varios depósitos epitermales; el presente estudio destaca la importancia de estimar el volumen emitido y los tipos de erupciones de los aparatos volcánicos en tiempo y espacio, así como de conocer la geoquímica y arquitectura de todas las rocas emitidas y de caja. Los resultados de este estudio pueden orientar la toma de decisiones y la exploración por Au-Ag en vetas y diseminados en la región andina.

En el Perú, la aplicación de los métodos geofísicos para la exploración minera ha sido mínima, a diferencia de las exploraciones de yacimientos petrolíferos, donde su demanda fue mucho mayor. Este diferencia respondería a la poca difusión del mismo, como las escazas pruebas de combinaciones metódicas. Entre los métodos a utilizar, están los sondeos eléctricos verticales y perfiles horizontales), la polarización espontánea( campos eléctricos-naturaleza electroquímica),el método magnético (distribución del campo magnético y perturbación en medición del componente vertical), el electromagnético a inducción(malla horizontal, cuadro vertical), y la emanación en la exploración de zonas mineras (radon, thoron, y actinon).
