Surveying of a bench face before blasting is a pre-requisite for a proper blast planning and for a satisfying blasting result both in terms of safety and fragmentation. When surveying a bench face, preferably a large amount of measurement points are required in order to determine the geometry and especially the irregularities with sufficient accuracy. Only contact-free measuring systems allow evenly distributed measurements over the whole bench surface. Existing systems such as total station, laser profiler, or laser scanner show significant drawbacks such as that surveying results are just isolated values of the bench geometry such as heights or profiles, that borehole positions have to be defined in advance in order to know where to take profile measurements and that systems require special surveying skills and that they are expensive too. In order to overcome these difficulties and to provide the blasters a simple tool for bench surveying, blast design and layout and the subsequent back-transfer of the blast plan into the quarry, the Department of Mineral Resources& Petroleum Engineering of the University of Leoben, 3G Software & Measurement company and Mineral AB, one of the largest producers of aggregates in Europe formed a joint venture to develop a new system. Based on an existing stereophotogrammetric system for rock surface surveying and joint analysis (JointMetrix), a new tool was developed within a year. Apart from several mines and quarries using that new tool already today in the daily work, both the Department of Mineral Resources& Petroleum Engineering at the University of Leoben and Austin Powder GmbH Blasting Service did a lot of studies to determine the reliability of the new stereophotogrammetric blast surveying and planning system and its precision in comparison to classical laser surveying equipment. After 1 year of testing and comparison with laser based surveying instruments, it can be concluded, that the new technology of blast surveying& design systems based on stereophotogrammetry is suitable for being used in the daily work routine in quarries and mines. The comparison of the precision of laser based systems and stereophotogrammetric systems has shown, that the deviation between these two types of systems is less than 10 cm, in many cases even lower.

Prior to April, 1961, the coal charge to Clairtonts coke oven batteries was 3" x 0" mine waslied coal having approximately 6.0% to 7.0% moisture. Even at this size and moisture content, the arching, rat-holing and hang-up was excessive and the effective live storage of coal was only 60% to 70% of the rated capacity of the coal bunkers, depending upon the moisture of the coal. In addition, many production delays were encountered in the time and methods required to fill the larry cars. The need for an improved metallurgical coke led to the introduction of pulverized coal to a portion of the plant in 196 1. When the full potential of the pulverizing equipment was realized, we were able to serve seven batteries in our second unit of batteries with pulverized coal through two coal bunkers. The discharge hoppers of these bunkers were equipped with air vibrators to assist the flow of pulverized coal into the larry cars. The vibrators were helpful in this respect but required considerable maintenance and caused damage to the bin plates.

The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), under sponsorship of the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research (OCR), and the American Gas Association (A. G. A. ), has been undertaking the development of one of several processes to convert coal to high-Btu gas as a means of supplementing natural gas supplies. It is anticipated that there will be a significant need for such gas in the foreseeable future in order to meet the ever increasing demands for this preferred fuel form. HISTORY The development of the HYGAS® Process is based on various studies conducted at IGT starting back as far as 1945. Initial work was directed toward production of synthesis gas with subsequent catalytic methanation. By 1964 the concept of the direct hydrogenation of coal to produce methane noncatalytically was well-founded and the chemistry was reasonably well established. Work up until this point in time was financed by the American Gas Association. In 1964 the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research joined with A. G. A. to support the program. The objective at that time was to develop the necessary know-how to enable the design of a pilot plant, a necessary step in the ultimate commercialization of the process. Work for the next three years (1964-1967) emphasized investigation of fluidized-bed technology in the hydrogasification step, where moving-bed technology had been previously employed, as well as identification of commercially available catalysts acceptable for catalytic methanation of the CO and hydrogen in the hydrogasifier effluent under operating conditions in the system. By 1967, the preliminary design of a 3 ton/hr pilot plant had been finalized, and IGT received authorization from OCR to proceed with the detailed design and construction of that facility. "Suboptimal performance of clusters of hydrocyclones (cyclones), relative to the performance of the individual cyclones that comprise the cluster, is a common phenomenon. The primary cause is well known: uneven distribution of the slurry feed into the individual cyclones. The direct result of uneven distribution is that each cyclone in a cluster performs somewhat differently. Hence, some, if not all, of them do not work at their intended operating points, and the classification is not as sharp as intended. The impact on grade, recovery and milling efficiency will vary depending on the duty of the processing circuit, but the most immediately apparent consequence of uneven distribution is a difference in wear rates in the individual cyclones; this exacerbates the problems of unequal performance of the individual cyclones. In severe cases, and as differential wear proceeds, flows from the individual cyclones may become visibly different. Uneven distribution, once the phenomenon was identified, was seen to be a significant issue in the high-solids hydrocyclone cluster in the ball mill recycle section of Evolution Mining’s Edna May Operation (EMO, Westonia, Western Australia) gold processing plant. In 2012, a FloCEP® hydrocyclone feed distributor system was installed to alleviate the problem. Over the next four years of operation, this innovation has proven its value in the metallurgical and maintenance areas. Individual cyclones now wear at the same rate, greatly reducing the need for operator intervention, as well as increasing overall plant availability through minimising unplanned maintenance. The costs of the installation can be justified by savings in maintenance alone, though the greatest value, as is described in this paper, is in allowing the plant to produce consistently closer to its operational design limits. The FloCEP® system is a low maintenance, readily installed retrofit, based on two patented devices that are combined with complementary proprietary design methodology allowing customisation for specific flow rates and slurry particle properties. For many years underground mining in the Sydney Coalfield has suffered from the effects of high horizontal stresses. It is only in the last 15 years that they have come to be recognized, understood, predicted and even avoided. This paper relates experiences in three coal mines in three different seams in the Sydney Coalfield. The effect of the direction of the principal horizontal stress on the direction of drivage of gate roads, access roadways and longwalls is described. Results of a monitoring program to measure the change of magnitude and direction of the principal horizontal stress in the gate roads as a result of longwall mining are also presented as well as the effect of the direction of principal horizontal stress on the shape of sandstone/gas outburst cavities.

The working experience of the Zinc Smelter, Debari, Udaipur with process modifications and iron control practices is described in detail in this paper. Most of the modifications were made at different times as part of capacity enhancement campaigns that led to distinct advantages, thereby increasing both zinc production and recoveries. This smelter came into existence in 1968 with a humble beginning of producing 18,000 metric tonnes (MT) of zinc per annum, using the conventional batch hydrometallurgical roast-leach-electrowinning technology. Zinc production capacity was increased stepwise to 45,000 MT, 49,000 MT and 59,000 MT, by making suitable process modifications and adopting new technologies, particularly in the leaching section. During these modifications, the process of iron separation as Moore cake was also changed to jarosite cake production. At present, jarosite is being disposed in a secured landfill at the Zinc Smelter, Debari (ZSD) and as Jarofix at the Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter (CLZS). As a result of subsequent in-house performance improvement and debottlenecking campaigns, this smelter could achieve further increases in production. Zinc production for the financial year 2005-06 was 81,000 MT.

Portable crushing at Duval Corporation's Sierrita open pit mine has proven both the economics and operability of large, hardrock, portable systems. In-house expertise was utilized to create a system incorporating both operational and maintenance features requested by operating personnel. The monitor/control system involves over 400 channels of information and is based on a DEC 1SI 11/2 microprocessor communicating with seven microprocessor-based data acquisition systems over a 4-wire, multidrop link. The year and one-half successful operation affirms the design philosophy and the hardware/software implementation.

Methane predrainage from coal seams in the Western Area of the U.K. has been practiced over the past decade. The differing reasons for the practice include the controlling of gas emission rates in coal headings required to win out coal faces and also the need to control the gas emission rates in the roadways of retreat faces in order to comply with the statutory requirements. There are some similarities with predrainage experience in the Bulli Seam NSW. The several case studies highlight the varying conditions in the Western Area coalfield where the use of predrainage was Required.

Problems associated with gas management become more significant as exploitation of coal reserves in the Bowen Basin in Australia becomes deeper. At Oaky North mine, relocation of production from one area of the mine to another with a higher gas content required the use of pre-drainage, post drainage and inertisation techniques to enable production activities to continue largely uninterrupted. Innovative surface to inseam drilling techniques were developed for pre-drainage of reserves close to mine workings and have proven to be largely successful. The gas management techniques adopted and specific experience gained are discussed in this paper.

Purpose of Paper Geophysics is a highly developed science which has found a wide use in industry. Perhaps the most spectacular application has been in the field of oil exploration. It has been estimated that, up to the end of 1939, geophysics was responsible for the discovery of five billion barrels of oil. In 1944, the sum o $40,000,000 was expended for geophysical work in the search for new oil deposits. Although the metal mining industry has so far made comparatively little use of the science, it is becoming increasingly common for the exploration engineer or geologist to be required to co-operate with the geophysicist. Many papers dealing with applied geophysics have been published but in most of them advanced training in physics and mathematics on the part of the reader has been assumed. It is difficult for the average engineer to obtain a ready understanding of the equipment, field procedure, and scope and limitations of the science from the literature. The present paper attempts to describe briefly and in simple terms the principles underlying magnetic, self-potential, and electrical resistivity methods and their application to a field problem. Introduction Geophysics is concerned with the study of gravity, magnetism, natural earth currents, earthquakes, vulcanism, and many other natural phenomena. The methods, originally devised for the measurement, for scientific purposes, of the forces associated with such phenomena have been adapted to the search for buried deposits of economic value. If the body sought has large dimensions and distinctive physical properties, geophysical measurements may reveal associated, and in some cases quite characteristic, anomalous features. However, in many instances the mass cannot be indicated directly but has a common association with geological features which can be defined by physical measurements. Although such surveys cannot specifically identify oil, metalliferous minerals, or other commercially valuable substances, it is possible to delineate anomalous sub-surface physical features which, with the help of geological information, can be assessed as possible or probable indications of the body or structure sought. The nature and extent of the material causing an anomaly, and its economic importance, can only be determined by further exploration, such as drilling.

In the five coalfields of Staffordshire, there have been some 43 incidents of spontaneous fires and heatings which have required special attention in the past ten years. This total excludes incidents in the Thick Coal Seam of South Staffordshire, which was worked until 1967, and which was subject to an almost continuous series of heatings. The incidents have been classified to show the sites of occurrence, the contributory factors which may have caused them and the treatments applied to them. The remedial techniques, as practised in Staffordshire, are dealt with in detail, with particular reference to standard methods of stopping-off. Precautionary measures taken are described, including a "liability to spontaneous combustion" classification of all seams, and the setting up of an emergency organization with emergency stocks of materials and equipment. The paper is concluded by a few words on the organization and control at the time of an incident.

Continued extraction of the No. 3 Seam at Elouera Colliery required the driveage of a sequence of roadways within an area of significantly elevated horizontal stress. Initial roof conditions varied from excellent to very severe as the panel entered the high stress area. The variation was attributed to the extraction sequence, with different roadways "leading" the panel into the high horizontal stressfield.This paper summarises field and analytical work designed to evaluate the use of stress control methods as an effective planning tool. The "leading" roadway of the panel would be required to remain stable whilst experiencing moderate to severe deformation whilst the neighbouring roadways (stress relieved) could be driven at more acceptable advance rates using less reinforcement.The planning implications of developing the panel with stress control methods are discussed.

The Roof Control Division of the Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center, MS HA, is routinely involved in the evaluation of ground conditions in underground coal mines. Assessing the stability of mined areas and the compatibility of mining plans with existing conditions are essential elements in assuring a safe working environment at a given site. Since 1985, the Roof Control Division has successfully used the Boundary Element Method of Numerical Modeling as a tool to aid in the resolution of complex ground control problems. This paper will present an overview of the modeling methodology established and details of techniques currently used to generate coal seam, rock mass, and gob backfill input data. A summary of coal and rock properties used in numerous successful evaluations throughout the country will be included and a set of Deterioration Indices that can aid in the quantification of in-mine ground conditions and verification of model accuracy will be introduced. Finally, a case study will be detailed that typifies the complexity of mining situations analyzed and illustrates various techniques that can be used to evaluate prospective design alternatives.

Holcim, one of the world's leading suppliers of cement, aggregates and concrete, has set up a few years ago a working group “Quarry” in order to optimize the performance of its central European quarry operations in terms of work safety, environmental standards and economic performance. One of the activities of this working group "Quarry" addresses the subject of blast fragmentation in the quarries. A benchmark study of the blast work in all quarries has shown substantial differences for the various operations in terms of drill& blast costs. Especially big differences were found with respect to the drilling patterns as a function of the borehole diameters and with respect to the utilization of the borehole volume for charging the explosives.

INTRODUCTION. THE installation of the Gayley Dry-Air process appealed specially to the management of the Warwick Iron & Steel Co., for the. reason that for fifteen years records had been kept at the works of the company, showing the amount of water entering the furnace in the form of aqueous vapor, and careful observations had been made of its effect upon the working of the furnace. Some years had proved much worse in their effect than others, on account, not only of excessive moisture, but also of great variation in the moisture from day to day, and sometimes within a few hours. It had been found impossible to. make a satisfactory percentage of high-silicon foundry-iron in summer, even on high fuel; and for some years the endeavor had been made so to arrange the sales that, during July and August, only a small percentage of the iron produced would be required to carry more than 2 per cent. of silicon. Our larger furnace, running on basic iron, year after year, produced in February a tonnage 20 per cent. higher than in August, on a much lower fuel-consumption, while, at the same time, the summer months were marked by ? messes," tuyeres closed by slips, and other irregularities, constituting serious additional business losses. It will be easily understood, therefore, that the records made at the Isabella furnace after the installation of the dry blast in 1904 possessed special interest, and were closely watched by us. The four factors itemised above are typically interdependent. They amalgamatively influence the judgement of the Engineer and they ultimately result in the delivery of safe and cost-effective solutions by Professional Engineers. This technical paper presents detailed information on the ground engineering aspects of a large-scale housing development project located on a sloping site that had been presumed to be unstable in West Sussex, England. The ground engineering design package for the scheme comprised of temporary working platform designs & stability assessment for piling rigs and other construction machinery, geostructural designs for approximately 1km total run of permanent bored pile retaining walls to support the split-level construction on the sloping site and geostructural designs for the permanent foundation piles to support the housing units. The paper details how the four factors outlined above were amalgamated by the project’s foundation specialist consultants & piling contractors to deliver safe and practical solutions for the development, with significant savings in materials, cost and project completion time.
