When the 2008 Olympic Games begin in Beijing, China is September it will not only mark the end of the journey for the Olympic torch and the thou-sands of participating athletes, but the games will also mark the culmination of a massive amount of construction in the city. On display for the world to see will be 31 new and refurbished venues including the 91,000-seat National Stadium called the ?Bird?s Nest? and the aquatics center, called the Water Cube. What will not be featured as prominently on the television cameras broadcasting the games around the world will be the network of tunnels built beneath the city. But that infrastructure of rail lines will be of critical importance to the games. While preparing to host the world, China added a subway tunnel that will include four stops in the Olympic Park. The 4.4-km (2.7-mile) subway line that runs through the complex of stadiums, gymnasiums and parks began trial operations in June. Prior to the opening of that line, Beijing's No. 5 subway line, which runs through the heart of the city from north to south, opened in October. The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,200 tons of ore per day with an average gold grade of 0.4 opt. The mine has a large horizontal extent of 2,500 feet by 500 feet and a vertical extent of 20 to 200 feet. High density of joints occurs within the host rock. Based on Rock Mass Rating and field observation, the Leeville ground conditions are characterized as poor to very poor. As such, heavy ground support is required for the mining operation in Leeville. Ore zones with a height in excess of 10 m (35 feet) are considered for longhole stoping. A typical stope measures 6.0 m (20 feet) wide, 30 to 55 m (100 to 180 feet, depending on the ground conditions) long and 10 to 30 m (35 to 100 feet, depending the thickness of ore body) high, yielding 10,000 to 20,000 tons when completed. Narrow ore zones, less than 10 m (35 feet), are mined using cut and fill. These drifts are 4.6 m (15 feet) wide by 4.6 m (15 feet) high. Based on the afore-mentioned poor ground condition, the establishment of a ground control monitoring system is key to operating both safely and successfully. The ground control monitoring system is composed of comprehensive instrument design and installation. Instruments include Multi-Point Borehole eXtensometers (MPBX) and Stretch Measurement to Assess Reinforcement Tension (SMART) cables. The monitoring system covers the mining zones and infrastructure openings. After about two year?s applications and measurements, useful data has been and continues to be collected to use in future stope and infrastructure structure design. South Africa?s primary electricity supplier, Eskom, provides incentives to reduce power demand during critical times by granting capital through a Demand Side Management programme. DSM encourages the end user to review and optimize energy consuming systems and use capital, provided by Eskom, to purchase or modify the equipment required to achieve a load-shift. As part of the DSM agreement the mine ultimately acquires the capital equipment and benefits from reduced power costs, but in return is required to sustain the load-shift tactic for up to five years. The paper focuses on one DSM tactic, main fan energy management. In this case, reduced air flows during selected peak and off peak periods, results in a substantial reduction in peak power demand. DSM incentives provided capital for automated main fan control as well as improved control of the mine ventilation systems. To examine the work in detail Gold Fields Ltd Driefontein gold mine near Johannesburg was chosen as a case study.

SUMMARY The productivity of drill and blast methods of mining in hard rock is limited by the cyclic nature of the operation, and a plateau of performance has been reached, even with the most advanced equipment developments. Higher mine operating costs and lower metal prices have more than ever generated the need for breaking through these productivity barriers. After initial field testing The Robbins Company has designed and manufactured, on a joint venture basis with Mount Isa Mines, Ltd., Australia, a prototype "Mobile Miner" for continuous cutting of hard rock. This paper describes the cutting concept, the initial application of a completed 1,156 m (3792 ft.) long 14% decline, actual performance and delay analysis, developmental modifications, anticipated performances of a fully developed machine, and possible future applications. INTRODUCTION The Point Lepreau nuclear generating station was constructed in the late 1970's and early 1980's by the New Brunswick Electric Power Commission. Point Lepreau is a small peninsula on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy, about 55 km west of St. John, New Brunswick. Cooling water for the plant was to be obtained from and discharged into the Bay of Fundy by the system of shafts and tunnels illustrated in Fig. 1. The design engineer for the cooling water system was Albery, Pullerits, Dickson and Associates, Ltd., Toronto. Ferrera-Resco Ltd, Windsor, Ontario, was contractor for construction of the cooling water shaft and tunnel system, which was done between 1976 and 1979. The senior author was project manager for Ferrera-Resco, the junior author served as consultant to Ferrera-Resco on evaluation of certain geotechnical questions which arose during construction. SITE CONDITIONS Geology Except for limited overburden soils at the onshore shaft sites, the tunnels and shafts were constructed entirely in Triassic conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone, with some shale interbeds. The bedding strike averaged about N6°E, The dip was to the west at about 30° along the Discharge Tunnel and 40° along the Intake Tunnel. Rock along the Intake Tunnel was mostly sandstone and siltstone and more thinly bedded, with RQ D generally in the range of 50 to 60%. Rock along the Discharge Tunnel tended to be coarser sandstone and conglomerate and more thickly bedded, with higher RQ D averaging about 80%. In the drive for faster development advance rates, railbound systems can be advantageous, in the right application. Skanska BS, the contractor to mine-owner VSK Mining, is driving an adit access deep into the Volouské Urchy Mountain in Slovakia to access the Gemerská Poloma talc deposit, some 70 km (43 miles) west of Ko?ice, the economic and cultural center of eastern Slovakia. Skanska began driving the Stolna Elisabeth drift in February 2007, extending 25 kg/m (50 lb/yd) rails (with 750 mm or 30 in. between sleepers) into the mountain to provide the main haulage to bring talc ore and waste out of the new mine once it gets into production. It will also be used for personnel transport, and is now almost complete. As a second egress and for ventilation, a 2.5-m- (8.2-ft-) diameter shaft of about 300-m (984-ft) depth will be sunk from surface down into the orebody. Stolna Elisabeth is a 4.2-km- (2.6-mile-) long drift mined at a cross section of some 11 m2 (118 sq ft). The finished profile is 3.2-m- (10.5-ft-) wide by 3.6-m- (11.8-ft-) high. It has been developed on a very slight incline so that water runs down it to the portal. The portal is 450 m (1,476 ft) above sea level and the end of the tunnel is 475 m (1,558 ft) above sea level. Much of the rock through which it has been developed is magnesite with a compressive strength of 150 MPA. The drilling jumbo is an Atlas Copco twin-boom Boomer 282 Raildrill drilling 42- to 45-mm- (1.6- to 1.7-in.-) diameter holes to a maximum length of 2.5 m (8.2 ft), depending on ground conditions. This is a drill jumbo that Skanska has used successfully on a number of projects during its life. The condition of the rock through which this drift has been driven is extremely variable. Five classifications of A1 and A2 and B1, B2 and [ ] B3, where A1 is the most competent rock and B3 is the worst, have been established. The amount of support used, of which more later is determined by the classification of ground conditions. At the time of the author?s visit, the project it was about 40 days ahead of schedule, thanks to high advance rates. For instance 6 m/day (20 ft/d) was the plan for the advance to be achieved in B1 rock, but sometimes the crews have achieved 8 m/day (26 ft/d) ? which is the average for the whole project ? in those conditions. In A1 the best advance rate achieved is 12 m/day (39 ft/d). The loading unit is a Häggloader 9HR-B on crawler tracks with a pony track to run on the rails. This allows the unit to be towed up and down the drift along the rails. To load from the face, the Häggloader lowers the foot of its onboard conveyor system to the floor and the backhoe pushes material on to it. This digging arm-conveyor combination produces uninterrupted, optimal volume loading of the haulage unit, without spill ? a technique offering load capacities as high as 180 m3/h (6,356 cu ft/hour). Push backs used in the production planning of open pit mines play an integral role in generating annual cash flow. Although several algorithms for push back designs have been proposed, none have studied the optimum number of push backs. In this paper, different algorithms have been implemented for the push back design of a cross section of a copper deposit and the results discussed. Moreover, the optimum number of push backs has been determined using analytical and multiple attribute decision making (MADM) methods based on minimizing the risk associated with grade uncertainty, and minimizing stripping ratio, while maximizing net present value (NPV). According to the findings, the optimum number of push backs has been proposed to be between three and six, as lower quantities of push backs are more likely to achieve the calculated net present value, and have smoother stripping ratios for different pushbacks. This approach was examined in an operating mine and the optimum number of push backs determined to be four.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3000 cfm (1.42 m3 /s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3 /s).

Soft laminated iron ore (SLO) having a higher hematite content and Martite goethite iron ore (MGO) having a higher goethite content were subjected to detailed characterization and beneficiation. The present research was designed to investigate if these abundant, low-grade ores can be enriched adequately using standard industry techniques. No significant enrichment of the ores using jigging operation on the coarse (-3,200 +595 mm) size fraction could be achieved. Good liberation was only attained in the 150 to 300 mm particle size range in both cases. Desliming enriches the ground ores significantly. The effect of the feed size on the separation efficiencies of the ground ores were studied using flowing-film concentration on a Wilfley table. Better enrichment is obtained in the case of 150-mm sized feed by tabling. The grade of SLO is improved from 56.14% to 66.51% Fe, while the Fe content of MGO is enriched from 55.16% to 65.83%. Substantial rejection of alumina and silica is also achieved. Due to the friable nature of MGO and the higher goethite content in it, the loss of Fe in the form of ultrafines is greater in this case compared to that of SLO.

"Mineral prospectivity modelling of polymetallic nodule deposits has been completed over the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (CIEEZ) using the GIS based Weights of Evidence modelling technique. Polymetallic nodules, also known as manganese nodules, have been explored as a possible resource for a number of metals including cobalt since the early 1970s. Recent data on the nodule composition and abundance in the CIEEZ has led to a renewed interest in the prospectivity for manganese nodules in the region. The predictive modelling has used the most recently accepted mineral model for polymetallic deep-sea nodule deposition to identify factors that are most likely to map the presence of this type of mineralisation in the CIEEZ.Manganese nodules form on the deep seafloor as concretions formed by concentric layering of iron and manganese hydroxides around a core and they grow at a very slow rate, on the order of millimeters per million years. The available data for the CIEEZ indicates a greater abundance in the area of nodules formed by hydrogenetic processes, which are the result of slow precipitation of metallic components from seawater. The environment in which the nodules are most abundant is at depths between 4,000 m and 6,000 m in areas of low sedimentation rate. Hydrogenous nodules commonly grow on siliceous and pelagic clay sediment, they are less common on other types of sediment."

Mining and processing of bastnaesite ore, (Ln)CO3F, for lanthanides extraction is investigated in this paper. This series of elements proved to be applicable for a wide range of high-tech uses. In spite of the strategic importance of lanthanides, no LCA and energy analyses of their extraction have ever been published. We perform in this paper a Life Cycle Assessment of the Lanthanide production cycle, based on available database and literature data from Mountain Pass mine (USA) and other worldwide mining and processing sites, most of which in China. We investigated three main steps: mining, milling (including transport, grinding and drying), and flotation (for lanthanide chloride extraction). We do not investigate here the separation of pure oxides from lanthanide chloride, a compound which is also marketed as such. The conventional LCA was integrated by means of energy and emergy evaluations, aimed at investigating respectively the global energy cost and the environmental sustainability of the process. Indicators of material intensity, thermodynamic efficiency, and environmental impact (including LCA and ecological footprint impact categories) are calculated and discussed.

Stillwater Mining Company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine approximately 21 km (13 miles) west of their existing Nye operation in the Bear tooth Mountains of southern Montana. Portals for the two access tunnels required at the new site were excavated in limestone talus to accommodate4.6 m (15 feet) diameter tunnel boring machines. A review of the technical design, field conditions and construction of the portals is presented.

Design and implementation of a roof bolting plan requires reliable geotechnical information of strata, such as rock strength, and locations of interfaces and voids/fractures. The drilling parameters obtained during normal roof bolt installation cycle provide a fast and economic way to gather information on the geological structure within the bolted horizon. The purpose of this research project is to develop a method for identifying the geological features in the mine roof strata based on drilling parameters of roof bolter. The criterion for void/fracture prediction has been developed and proven valid. This paper focuses on the estimation of the strength of roof strata by using drilling parameters. Based on the results of a series of underground and laboratory tests, feed pressure is found to be the most sensitive parameter when the strength of roof strata changes. Moreover, it was also found that both penetration rate and rotation rate have obvious impact on the magnitude of feed pressure. Based on these findings, the criterion for the estimation of roof strata strength has been developed using the relationship among feed pressure, penetration rate and rotation rate and implemented in MRGIS.

South Arturo is a “Carlin-type”, breccia-hosted, oxide gold deposit located at the north end of the Carlin Trend. The discovery hole was drilled in July 2005 from mine dumps 1,000 feet south of the Dee open pit. Discovery hole (BD-72) encountered a cumulative 245 feet @ 0.056 opt Au beneath 850 feet of post mineral Tertiary Carlin Formation. Oxidation extends to depths greater than 2,000 feet in the deposit area. The deposit is presently in definition drilling stage with approximately 190,000 feet of drilling completed to date. A resource estimate is in progress. This paper will focus on the discovery and descriptive characteristics of the mineralization.

In mining and quarrying operations, electric motors can fail for a variety of reasons. Some failures are directly linked to demanding production requirements and contaminant-laden environments and, consequently, are difficult to prevent. A sizeable number, however, are caused by ?offline? factors that have nothing to do with production. These include inadequate or substandard motor repair practices and improper motor shipping, storage and installation. The fact that failures are at times attributable to repair- or rebuild-related errors and problems raises the stakes when selecting an electric motor repair provider. Teaming with high-quality electric motor shops can help a company reduce failures due to offline factors, improving motor reliability and cutting downtime costs. Regardless of location or annual revenues, the best motor shops have similar business cultures and share many of the same characteristics.

The pollution of our water supply, Lake Michigan, is a continuing threat so long as our overflows from combined sewers exist. The problems have become even more acute during recent years, due to the increase of paved area- which accelerates and enlarges the flows of storm water. After each storm, mixtures of raw sewage and storm water spill into our waterways. If the storm is too large for the drainage systems, the mixture backs up into our streets and basements. Under severe conditions, it may even become necessary to open the locks, and discharge the polluted water into Lake Michigan. Consider the scope of the problem, as shown in Figure 1. The area in which combined sewers exist is 375 square miles, located in the central parts of Chicago and 49 suburbs. There are an estimated 640 overflow outlets to the waterways, each requiring attention. The capacity of outlets tributary to the waterways has increased dramatically over the years. Each time a pocket of upstream flooding is drained into the channels, the problem of its rapid disposition increases. Another difficulty is that the bottom of our waterways is covered with a blanket of accumulated sludge, ranging in depth up to 3-feet. Several bauxite residue sands and muds produced by Bayer plants in the U.S. and overseas have been fractionated using dry and wet magnetic separators. The magnetic sand fractions typically contain about 60 wt% iron and the bulk of the radioactivity in this waste. The muds are more difficult to process than the sands, but some fractionation is possible using a combination of flotation and magnetic separation techniques.

The Brightwater conveyance system includes 26 km of tunnels, a 130 mgd pump station, 2 km of micro tunnels, and a 2.4 km outfall. The tunnels extend from Woodinville to Puget Sound through varying soils in 1 to 7 bars of hydrostatic pressure and depths to 185 m. The tunnel diameters range from 4 to 6 m and include numerous lining systems. This paper highlights major shaft and tunnel design, including dual cellshafts, multiple pipe configuration tunnels, polymer concrete segments, and the use of a one pass lining designed to convey high pressure effluent.

Barrick Gold plans to have four new gold mines in production by 2006. Together, the mines would increase the company’s output by 40 percent. The projects include Veladero in Argentina, Alto Chicama in Peru, Cowal in Australia and Tulawaka in Tanzania. All of them are scheduled to begin production between the first quarter of 2005 and the first quarter of 2006. They are expected to drive Barrick Gold’s growth profile to a target of 211.5 to 217.7 t (6.8 million to 7 mil-lion oz) of gold production in 2007. The company’s projected output for 2004 is 152.4 to 155.5 t (4.9 million to 5million oz) in 2004. Overall, higher production and lower costs are expected in the early years from the new mines.
