West Virginia's basic coal mining regulatory programs are not unique when compared to Federally approved programs implemented by other coal producing states. In fact, the language in The West Virginia Energy Act governing subsidence mirrors that written in the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act as well as other states' statutes. Certain legal and administrative issues, how¬ever, combine to make West Virginia's regulation of surface subsidence a singular approach.

The Himalayan ranges have complex geological formation induced with locked up tectonic stresses and squeezing ground conditions. High overburden, steep slopes, perennial snow, and forest cover restricts accurate prediction of geological features, resulting in surprises during excavation. The tunnel planning under high altitude, extreme climatic, and unfavorable approachability conditions requires elaborate detailing. The construction technique and working faces for excavation are influenced by site accessibility/high overburden conditions, restricting the provision of access tunnel or shaft. The paper discusses site constraints influencing construction method and working faces for 8.9 km long highway tunnel at elevation 3,000 m under 1,900 mover burden through quartz-mica-schist formation.

Let’s start off with your assessment of the mining industry. Today, the status of the mining industry is stronger than it has been over the previous few years. While mining continues to be a major part of the world’s economic foundation, the industry is gaining strength due to rebounding metals and minerals prices. And now, with these rising prices and the changes the industry instituted during the years when mining-related commodities were selling at low prices, our stronger, more productive and internationally competitive industry should flourish. Mining remains an essential business and the industry is far ahead of the game when it comes to the trend of globalization as a key to sustained growth. Also, the industry continues to realize increased productivity through technological innovations. And an increasing number of countries are moving towards capitalism, which opens doors for exploration and mining within their borders. After looking at all of these factors, I believe that the mining industry will only continue to gain momentum in the future.

The Buick mine, located 195 kilometers (120 miles) southwest of St. Louis in the Viburnum Trend, is owned and operated by Homestake Mining Company. The mine produces lead and zinc ore from a room and pillar mining method at a depth of approximately 335 m (1 100 ft). The Buick orebody typically averages 60 to 120 m (200 to 400 ft) in width with ore thicknesses ranging from 2.4 to 36.6 m (8 to 120 ft). The mine is divided in two; the halves are referred to as the North mine and South mine orebodies. The North mine orebody contains the higher grade ore; however, the developed reserves for the South mine orebody comprise about 60 percent of the total developed reserves for the Buick property. Existing pillars represent one-third of the total developed reserves.

Minerals contribute to the U.S. gross domestic prod-uct (GDP) at several levels?mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. In 2008, the estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States was 1.1 percent and the nominal GDP was about $14.3 trillion (Table 1). Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often reflected in mineral production and consumption rates. For instance, continued declines in the U.S. housing market during 2008 were reflected in further reductions in the production and consumption of cement, clays, construction sand and gravel and crushed stone (mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction), and those associated with the related manufacture of goods, such as ceramic tile, heating and air conditioning equipment, paint, plumbing and sanitaryware, roofing, wiring and wallboard ? all used by the housing industry. The widespread effects of the slowing domestic economy became more apparent in the last three to six months of 2008 when prices for many mineral commodities declined sharply after reaching record highs earlier in the year, indicating significantly lower demand for those materials or products containing them.

The proposed Second Avenue Subway Project in New York City is approximately 8.5 miles long, up to a depth of 120 feet beneath grade and runs the length of the eastern side of the island of Manhattan from Harlem in the north to the financial district in the south. It will reduce overcrowding and delays on the existing parallel line, improving travel for both city and suburban commuters, and upgrading access to mass transit for residents of the East Side of Manhattan. This subway line will have 16 new stations providing transfers to the existing Metro-North commuter rail service and to New York City Transit subway lines and bus services. The first phase of construction includes two TBM rock tunnels 2.4 miles long and two new large and shallow rock cavern stations with clear span openings ranging from 70 to 100 feet and length in excess of 1000 feet with 615 feet center platform, coupled with low rock cover ranging from 20 feet to 40 feet. The design methodology for these large and shallow rock caverns consists of using well known empirical methods for initial estimate of support requirements and then two and three dimensional continuum and discontinuum analyses for verification of the selected excavation sequence and support system. This paper describes the analysis and design methodologies used for the two large and shallow rock caverns with insight into how to overcome the design complexities and construction challenges of the urban underground.

The North-South Bypass Tunnel is a new $AUD1.5 billion underground traffic route in Queensland, Australia, a project of the Brisbane City Council. The tunnel is approximately 5.2 km long, bypassing the Central Business District, and is adjacent to and below major buildings and services. Road tunnel alignment issues include the complex southern connections to the Pacific Motorway and the design of ramps to the east and the north. A review of road tunnel alignment criteria and accident data for Australian and overseas tunnels, similar to the proposed NSBT, are discussed. The key findings of this review lead to a rationalization of the traditional tunnel cross sectional width allocation. The road alignment design elements adopted for the NSBT are also discussed. The NSBT route crosses beneath the Brisbane River. Geotechnical investigations and hydrogeological modelling are described. The crossing has a fundamental impact on the alignment and the tunnelling methods. The tunnelling methods to be adopted and the tunnel support are described. The geotechnical investigations and hydrogeology analysis culminate in the selection of a single shielded TBM for the reference design. These outcomes are related to complex issues of hydrogeology and contaminated groundwater. These are discussed in detail.

Introduction Most high purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz, generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found that is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies, Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco Inc., mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, IL. Both companies mine from various locations within a 10-mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Co. mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, AR. Geology The southern Illinois white tripoli area is on the southern flank of the Illinois Basin. The commercial silica zone is a facies of the Clear Creek chert of Lower Devonian Age. To the north, where it occurs deep in the basin, the Clear Creek is a siliceous limestone. In the mining area, thin overburden has allowed access by surface ground water, which has leached away the carbonate content and left a quite pure silica residue. Fossils characteristic of sea bottom deposition, such as brachiopods and trilobites, are occasionally encountered in mining. The structure of the mining area is poorly known, due to infrequent outcrops. Strata in most mines are inclined at dips of 5° to 20°. There appear to be occasional high angle normal and reverse faults, but these are seldom of any significance in mining. The friable white silica zone mined in the Clear Creek chert is overlain by dark brownish-red chert and siliceous shale. Exploration drilling to date has not encountered the base of the microcrystalline tripolitic zone. Chemical content Leaching by ground water solution has removed virtually all the carbonate from the original siliceous limestone. Impurities encountered are red to yellow iron oxides, aluminous clays, and occasional black manganese oxides. The silica has no detectable formula water. A typical chemical analysis and physical properties are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Mineralogy and crystallinity Southern Illinois friable tripoli appears amorphous under the polarizing microscope. No crystal structure and only occasional, vague, patchy anisotropism is evident. However, the material gives an excellent quartz X-ray diffraction pattern. Ground freezing was utilized to provide complete stability of the excavation face and complete groundwater cut-off for the jacking of the three tunnel boxes for the Interstate 90 / Interstate 93 approach to the Fort Point Channel crossing. Through a wide range of geological conditions and large buried obstructions, the freezing provided complete stability of the face so that a 11.5 m (38 ft) high free standing vertical face could be mined without the need for any additional face support. Obstructions were incorporated into the massive frozen ground matrix, and held in place so that they could be excavated with a minimum of disturbance. The freezing provided an absolute groundwater cut-off, and permitted the work to be done without disturbance to the active rail system immediately above. With the use of instrumentation such as borehole thermocouples, the effectiveness of the freezing was guaranteed and the jacking proceeded with complete confidence and assurance of the ground conditions ahead.

London Underground is the oldest and one of the deepest Metros in the world. The temperature of the Underground has been increasing over the last 100 years, mainly as a consequence of increases in train service. Further increases in train service are planned in the coming years to meet the predicted growth in passenger demand. Unabated, the additional service will increase temperatures on the Underground. London Underground Limited (LUL) has therefore set up the Cooling the Tube Programme (CTP) to tackle the issues of thermal conditions on the Underground. Some of LUL?s studies and cooling methods have borrowed experience and techniques from the mining industry; some of methods used or proposed may in turn be of interest to the mining community. This paper presents a background into the sources of heat on the Underground network, the manner in which the heat is presently dissipated, the analysis of future temperatures and criterion and a number of means and methods being used or proposed to cool the network in an environmentally sensitive manner.

This paper describes the basic requirements for the utilization of belt air to ventilate working sections at remote locations in relation to the main fans. It highlights the risks involved, potential problems, and the provisions that must be followed by mine operators for the safe use of belt air. The paper also presents a brief review of the current regulations, conveyor belting tests, atmospheric monitoring system requirements, and the experience gained by mine operators to utilize the belt entries to ventilate remote working sections or areas where mechanized equipment is being installed or removed. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations with respect to the utilization of belt air and the composition of belt material in under-ground coal mines.

Overcasts are indispensible ventilation control devices to permit one airway to pass over another without mixing in room and pillar coal mining. The airflow distribution inside the overcast depends on its spe-cific configuration at which the flow enters into it. This study uses 3D numerical simulation to examine the pressure and velocity distributions inside an overcast. The effects of the overcast angle on the flow field are also examined. The flow is assumed to be turbulent and isothermal and the standard k-e model is utilized. Simulated results display flow separation and recirculation regions of different sizes occurring not only upstream and downstream from the overcast but also inside it. The results also show that the size of the recirculation regions in-creased with the increase in the angle before and after the overcast influencing significantly the flow field and pressure losses. The stream-lines are plotted to show the 3D structure of the flow field. The results from the simulation can guide overcast design commonly used in un-derground coal mines. The classical approach to control rock fall and ravel in open pit mining has been to use catch benches. The width and volume of benches is most dependent on the bench height, size of loading equipment, blast damage to the face and mining regulations. This was compatible with open pit slopes of less than about 45°. As our understanding of rock mechanics and blasting control has improved over recent years, much steeper rock slopes can be developed at many open pit mines. However, narrower benches result with less rock fall capacity. The transportation industry has been very successful in using catch fences to protect highways throughout North America and Europe for years. The authors recommend that cable and ring net fences have a potential major application in open pit mining to allow steeper rock slopes with significant economic benefit. This paper outlines the application, design and operation of catch fences in surface mining for specific conditions. Typical case examples are presented.

Studies were carried out to determine whether filtration rate changes observed in an iron ore concentrator were due to variations in particle shape. It was confirmed that ores mined from different locations differed in filtration rates by as much as 60%. However, when image analysis was used to quantify the shapes of the individual particles in the filtration feed, it was found that the particle shapes showed almost no variation, and the shapes did not correlate with the filtration rate. It was also determined that the filtration rate variations were not caused by changes in particle size distribution. These results suggest that the differences in filtration rate are due to factors other than size and shape, such as surface chemistry.

The catalytic effect of ferrous ion in the industrial biohydrometallurgical heap and dump leaching processes is explained. During the bacterial leaching of metal sulfides, ferric ion will partly be hydrolyzed and a variety of sols, gels, amorphous and/ or crystalline mono- and polynuc- lear hydroxo- and sulfato complex species formed, especially by olation and aggregation reactions. There are many problems associated with these iron precipitates especially in the purification of leach solutions. The present study will discuss the iron precipitation reactions; gives kinetic and thermodynamic evaluations of the effect of temperature on pyrite and ferrous iron oxidation; and reports on the tolerance of heavy metal ion concentrations by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans.

INTRODUCTION Geology, the science of the earth, is the fundamental science in the construction of a tunnel. The approximate site of a tunnel is determined by its purpose. The geology of the tunnel site will determine the cost--or feasibility of a tunnel--the specific alignment to accomplish the purpose of the tunnel, the design of the tunnel (within the limits of the purpose of the tunnel), and the methods of construction. The more accurately the geology of a proposed tunnel can be depicted, the more accurately can the cost of a tunnel be estimated. The factors that should be defined for tunnel design and construction are the physical characteristics of the material in which the tunnel is to be constructed. The physical characteristics of the material are determined by the genesis of the material, and subsequent geologic processes that have affected the material. The geologic materials in which tunnels are constructed can be broadly classified as unconsolidated and consolidated. The unconsolidated materials include chiefly deposits of recent geologic time that occur near the surface. Because these deposits occur near the surface, and tunnels constructed in them will be at shallow depth, methods of physical exploration such as geophysical methods, trenching, and drilling will give more data at relatively low cost--therefore the physical exploration is generally, or should be, quite extensive--and the

The characteristics of the igneous and metamorphic bedrock, extra-hard and abrasive, of the Guadarrama Tunnels, a bi-tube project of length 28.4 km without any intermediate attack, are first commented upon. Next, a detailed discussion is given of the most relevant aspects of the performance of the four double shield type TBMs. The experience of this leads to various recommendations to be borne in mind in future designs of TBM having to work in rock of similar characteristics.

China’s burgeoning economy is responsible for a major share of recent world mineral consumption increases. In addition to factors traditionally recognized in market economies1 and factors unique to specific commodities, Chinese consumption now plays a major and increasingly important role in energy and mineral markets for many commodities, such as aluminum, copper, iron and steel, and oil. China has the world’s second largest economy after the United States. And its long-term importance to the minerals markets is even greater than indicated by its gross domestic product (GDP), which is currently less than two-thirds of that of the United States (Table 1). This is because China’s rising standard of living is accompanied by rapid industrialization and urbanization. Its consumption of mineral materials for infrastructure development for its very large population is significantly greater per capita than that of such developed economies as the United States, the European Union and Japan. In other words, China’s per capita production is rising at a rapid rate and will probably continue to do so for many years.

This paper discusses the process utilized by the Kiewit?Bilfiger Berger Joint Venture (Contractor) to select, design, and procure the largest mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever implemented in North America. The mixshield will excavate the 8,534 linear m × 6.7 m ID (28,000 linear ft × 22 ft ID) tunnel for the City of Portland Oregon?s, Bureau of Environmental Services (Owner) East Side CSO Tunnel Project.
