The United States continued to depend on imported bauxite during 1995. Domestic bauxite mine production remained at about the same level as in 1994. It amounted to less than 1% of total world production. All of it was used for nonmetallurgical products, such as abrasives, chemicals, proppants and refractories. Metallurgical grade bauxite was imported from 12 countries. Principal suppliers for this 10 Mt (11.1 million st) of ore were Guinea (39%), Jamaica (35%), Brazil (17%) and Guyana (8%). The average value of imports, c.i.f. US ports, was $31/t ($28/st). Calcined refractory-grade bauxite imports totaled235 kt (259,000 st). It had an average value of $112/t($102/st) c.i.f. US ports. China supplied 61%, Guyana30%, Hong Kong 4% and France 3%. Imports of other grades of calcined bauxite, primarily for the abrasives market, totaled 259 kt (286,000 st).They were supplied by China (59%), Greece (20%), Brazil (14%) and Australia (6%). Currently, mineral producers are suffering through a major downturn in prices for their products, even though it has only been a few years since they were enjoying high prices. From an historical perspective, the current situation is another of the cyclical down-turns that often reoccur every 5 to 7 years or so. This paper uses time trend decomposition techniques to identify the cycles and statistical methods to find the duration of these cycles for a variety of mineral prices. Given some idea of how long and severe these cycles typically are, the mining industry can better plan to weather the downturns and take advantage of the upturns. For example, timing investments in new projects to take advantage of the cyclical upturns can dramatically improve project profitability.

Copper electrowinning operations have dramatically improved their ability to produce high quality copper at low costs over the past several decades. Even so, some fundamental understandings are still lacking, which could allow operates to run more efficiently. For example, a rule of thumb exists that estimates a current efficiency loss of 2-3% per gram per liter of iron in the electrolyte. While several laboratory studies have been performed that demonstrate this rule of thumb is likely true, no definitive relationship exists. In this paper, the first steps in developing a definitive relationship are presented. The effective diffusivity of ferric ions in synthetic copper electrowinning solutions was measured using chronoamperometry and the Cottrell equation. The effective diffusivity of ferric ion was determined as a function of electrolyte concentration and temperature. Synthetic electrolytes were then used in laboratory scaled copper electrowinning experiments where relationships were found under stagnant conditions between current efficiency and solution composition.

Preliminary engineering for the Waller Creek Tunnel was completed in 2001, but the project was held in abeyance until the summer of 2007. This paper describes several features of the revised design, which required significant changes from the original concept. Most notable is the expected replacement of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) by conventional tunneling. The considerable influence of geological conditions on the tunnel vertical alignment is discussed, in particular the impact of the zones of Eagle Ford Shale with swelling potential. Other features which are described include the wide span tunnels and large diameter shaft requirements.

Copper, nickel, zinc and other ?penalty? metals are found with gold together in nature, and have a similar chemical affinity for cyanide used in leaching operations4. As a result, solutions that come from the heap leach pads contain a significant concentration of penalty metals along with the desired gold. In solution, gold and cyanide form the complex Au(CN)2- that is readily adsorbed onto activated carbon. Penalty metals as individual metal ions also load onto activated carbon and, depending on the concentration of cyanide and the pH of the solution, can form various cyanide complexes. Some of these complexes can also load onto carbon while some are significantly inhibited from loading. Copper, for example, can form the dicyanide complex Cu(CN)2-, the tricyanide complex Cu(CN)32-, and the tetracyanide complex Cu(CN)43-. At a low pH and a low concentration of cyanide, the dicyanide complex predominates. At a higher pH and a higher concentration of cyanide, the tetracyanide complex predominates. Without excess cyanide, however, individual copper ions can remain present. Activated carbon is used in gold extraction because it is highly selective for gold and less so for other metals, such as copper3. However, copper has the ability to adsorb (?load?) onto activated carbon and block the adsorption of gold when it is in the dicyanide form and in a high enough concentration. When copper is in the tetracyanide form, copper loading is significantly inhibited, allowing for the maximum gold recovery. In order to ensure the tetracyanide complex is formed, a combination of both available cyanide and elevated pH must be present. In the South Area of Newmont Mining Corporation?s Gold Quarry mine in Carlin, Nevada, copper and nickel loading becomes a problem when certain acid generating zones of the heap are leached. Copper, nickel, zinc and other penalty metals become leachable and the lower pH uses up more of the cyanide and creates carbon loading conditions for the metals. This decreases the carbon?s ability to extract the gold from solution, decreasing the recovery and increasing the concentration of gold in the barren solution that leaves the carbon columns. In this study, operational data from March through to May of 2007 is presented to show how Newmont developed a quick fix to lower pH and elevated metal concentrations that were causing low gold loadings on activated carbon at their South Area Leach (SAL) heap leach operations. Laboratory tested were also conducted to examine the chemical kinetics of metal loading and the individual effects of increased cyanide concentrations. THEORY Copper I ions form four different complexes with cyanide in solution: the monocyanide species CuCN, the dicyanide species Cu(CN)2-, the tricyanide species Cu(CN)32-, and the tetracyanide species Cu(CN)43-. The species are formed from the following reactions: [Cu)(?+-+ K1 (1) Cu ß2 (2) --+?+23)(3CNCuCNCu ß3 (3) --+?+34)(4CNCuCNCu ß4 (4) ] where K1 equals 1019.50, ß2 equals 1024.03, ß3 equals 1028.65, and ß4 equals 1030.35. Along with these complexing reactions, hydrogen cyanide and water also dissociate in solution, as per the following reactions: [H?+-+ KH (5) OHOHH2?+-+ KW (6)] where KH has a value of 109.24 and KW has a 1014 value2. These six chemical equations compete with each other, with domination of one over the others dependent on the CN- and H+ concentrations. Each complex also has different properties when it comes to its loading behavior on activated carbon. The dicyanide copper complex and the monocyanide copper complex have an affinity for adsorption onto activated carbon that is greater than the affinity of gold cyanide for adsorption. They also have a lower solubility in water, which enhances adsorption. The tricyanide copper complex and the tetracyanide copper complex are water soluble and have an affinity for loading adsorption on activated carbon that is less than the affinity of gold cyanide for loading adsorption1. There are three prime reasons for this phenomenon. First, the extra cyanides mask the metal ion more, which blocks the main adsorption characteristic of the complex. Second, the complexes are also larger, making it harder to physically fit into the active sites on the carbon. This helps make the latter two complexes kinetically inhibited from adsorption, freeing carbon active site to load with gold cyanide complexes. Third, it is also important to consider the expressions of the mass and charge balance. These balances describe all the overall concentration of copper and cyanide in solution, as well as marking overall charges of the ions in solution4. This is important because significantly changing the charge from positive/neutral to more negative is another reason for activated carbon to reject adsorbing the higher cyanide complexes. The speciation of copper and other penalty metal cyanide complexes in solution is dependent on the pH. At lower pH values, increased hydrogen ions (H+) can out-compete metals for cyanide ions. Lower free cyanide in the system leads to the lower cyanide species of copper cyanide predominating, with a noticeable concentration of the free metal, monocyanide and dicyanide species of copper cyanide. At higher pH values, hydrogen ions are significantly reduced, reducing the kinetics of HCN formation. More free cyanide remains in the system, allowing for more complexing. With this higher amount of cyanide in the system, the tetracyanide species of copper cyanide predominates, also with a noticeable concentration of the tricyanide species of copper cyanide. The estimated value of natural gemstones produced from U.S. deposits during 2004 was $12.9 million. This was a 3-percent increase from that of 2003. U.S. gemstone production included agates, amber, beryl, coral, garnet, jade, jasper, opal, pearl, quartz, sapphire, shell, topaz, tourmaline, turquoise and other gem materials. More than 60 varieties of gemstones have been produced commercially from U.S. mines. But commercial mining of gemstones has never been extensively undertaken in the United States. Most of the deposits have been relatively small compared with other mining operations. In the United States, much of the current gemstone mining is conducted by collectors, gem clubs and hobbyists rather than business organizations.

Introduction Technological advances in mining and processing have started the domestic mining and mineral industry back on the road to competitiveness. A massive trade deficit, however, coupled with foreign competition and more government regulations threaten to slow this recovery. So say mining executives in Colorado and Minnesota. These industry decision-makers agree that their challenge is to continue the technical innovations of their industry. The journey back to profitability and competitiveness means improved products, they say, but at lower production costs. At separate gatherings in January, officials in both states said that they believe their industry is up to the challenge. Worker attitudes will have to change, they understand, and management styles will need adjusting. And, while they are willing to make the necessary adjustments, they are going to need some help. Or, at the very least, less interference from the federal government. Foreign markets, all but closed to American products, must be opened up on a reciprocal basis. The nation's $170 billion trade deficit is a priority item that can no longer be ignored. And, closer to home, federal and state environmental regulations concerning mineral production must themselves be monitored. 1987 in Colorado While Colorado's service and trade industries should have a fairly good 1987, the state's mining industry can expect another disappointing year filled with layoffs and declining profits, according to the Colorado Mining Association. Once again, foreign competition and government regulations are seen as the main reasons for the mineral industry's woes. And state mining officials see little relief until at least the 1990s. Speaking to a group of reporters at its annual press briefing in Denver, CMA officials said Colorado's overall nonfuel mineral production is expected to fluctuate between a flat and declining growth trend. Mining employment in the state is expected to fall by 400 people this year, to about 7500. In 1981, Colorado mines employed as many as 17,800 people. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the employment rate in mining in the state grew by 12% annually, according to a summary report compiled by the CMA. Last year, worldwide molybdenum production continued to exceed demand US moly producers, therefore, were forced to continue their familiar path of production cutbacks, as well as workforce reductions. And some molybdenum mines in the US closed altogether, the CMA report stated. In Colorado, Amax's Climax and Henderson molybdenum mines operated at about 50% of combined capacity. Climax employed about 200 people at the beginning of 1987, producing about 5.4 kt/d (6000 stpd) or ore. Henderson employed about 700 people, producing about 24.5 kt/d (27,000 stpd) of ore. In coal, the number of licensed coal mines in Colorado has declined from 124 in 1960 to 43 in 1986, of which only 23 were producing. Once a stable source of employment and production, the metallurgical coal industry in the state has only one surviving metallurgical coal mine, Mid-Continent's Orchard Valley mine. High production and transportation costs, weakness in the US steel industry, and a weak market position have contributed to the decline, the summary reported. The Cresson gold deposit is in the southcentral portion of the Cripple Creek mining district in central Colorado (Fig. 1). The deposit is hosted by a series of 32 Ma (Kelley, 1995) felsic to mafic, alkaline volcanic rocks that were deposited in a diatremal environment. Mineralization in the Cresson deposit is structurally con-trolled. It occurs as disseminated and vein type. Gold deposition is closely associated with potassium-pyrite metasomatism and quartz-telluride vein development(Pontius, 1992). The Cresson deposit is owned by the Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Co. (CC&V), a joint venture between Pikes Peak Mining (67%) and Golden CycleGold (33%).

The surge of activity in the solar energy market, spurred by government incentives, has created new and more efficient solar technologies, but issues surrounding land- and water-use have backlogged the full-scale development of solar farms. This paper explores siting solar power plants on degraded or polluted lands, such as mine tailings impoundments. Historically, mining and has been integral to Arizona?s economy, but has dwindled in relevance due to urban pressures and environmental regulations. Currently, it is legal to site solar power plants on degraded or polluted lands, but the question remains whether the economics of this degraded lands solar development is more favorable than developing pristine land. Therefore, we explore economics of developing mine tailings impoundments at both the institutional and financial level. Methods of research for this paper were interviews with government regulators, environmental advocacy organizations, farmers, and mining company executives. Financial models using extant tax incentives show a positive net present value for the installation of solar power plants, even when accounting for the costs of land remediation.

Tarkwa Gold Mine is located in south western Ghana, and is majority owned and operated by Gold Fields Ghana Limited. The Tarkwa CIL plant utilises a single low aspect 27' x 42' 14MW dual pinion drive SAG mill designed to mill 4.2mtpa (525tph). The plant was designed and constructed in a manner that would facilitate its expansion to 8.4mtpa (1,050tph). Since the plant was commissioned in September 2004, the SAG mill has consistently exceeded its nameplate throughput by up to 25%. Through the installation of a 26? x 36? 14MW dual pinion drive Ball mill along with additional upstream and downstream equipment, the plant will now be expanded to 12mtpa (1,500tph). This paper endeavours to outline the process and engineering design challenges along with the future construction challenges of the expansion in the midst of a fully operational plant.

Three sulfide minerals, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite, were leached using a bioleaching mode and an electrobioleaching mode. The former mode was used to leach the minerals with the bacterium A. ferrooxidans in a bioreactor. In the latter mode, the leaching of the minerals was performed in a combination of a bioreactor and an electrochemical cell. In this set-up, the solution was circulated between the bioreactor and the cathode compartment, the two reactors were in series, and the cell was operated intermittently. The mechanism is such that an increase in Fe(II) concentration, which is a nutrient of the bacteria, by electrochemical reduction of Fe(III) would increase the bacterial population and in turn would accelerate the leaching of the mineral. It has been found that the electrobioleaching of chalcopyrite is an improvement over the bioleaching with respect to the fact that leaching conversion is higher and a high level of Fe(II) concentration can be maintained. However, the electrobioleaching of sphalerite does not show any improvement over bioleaching. The electrobioleaching of pyrite is similar to that of chalcopyrite, and this has potential to be used in applications such as coal desulfurization and pretreatment of refractory gold ore in heap leaching where fine gold particles are entrapped inside pyrite particles.

The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system is an internationally recognized classification system that can be used for preliminary ground control design. The RMR system assigns quantifiable values to predefined classified parameters of a rock mass. Assigning a single value rather than a range to each parameter is a source of uncertainty, however, assigning a single value can be useful for further studies related to RMR ratings. Fuzzy systems are being used in an increasing number of application areas where linguistic rules are used to describe the system. In past decades, fuzzy systems have been successfully used in geotechnical and mining engineering problems to cope with uncertain data as well as with vagueness. In such scenarios, linguistic rules and rating-based classification of rock masses have always been questionable. The objective of this study is to apply fuzzy set theory to the RMR classification system. The fuzzy system proposed in this study is specified for weak and very weak rock masses (RMR<50) based on data collected from Nevada gold mines where 68% of RMR data is in the ?poor? and ?very poor? classes. In this approach, a Mamdani fuzzy algorithm has been constructed to evaluate basic RMR89 rating for the ?wet condition.? Comparison between basic RMR89 and fuzzy RMR shows the fuzzy RMR system is valid to predict RMR from the discrete rating of each input parameter.

Underground construction often requires working within a very congested urban environment, including excavating shafts adjacent to highly sensitive and multistoried structures, sometimes even within such structures. Shafts adjacent to heavily loaded column footings are often required due to space constraints. Invariably, footing surcharges must be considered during the design of shaft rock reinforcement. Rockwedge stability evaluation reveals that column surcharges can greatly impact the ability to meet the desired factor of safety. Design methodologies and examples to deal with these special circumstances are presented.

Komatsu America has introduced its 2-MW (2,700-hp), 930E-3 ac electric drive truck with a 290-t(320-st) capacity. The truck is designed to provide increased productivity, lower cost per ton hauled and improved speed and control. The 930E-3 is powered by a Komatsu SSDA16Vl6016-cylinder engine. It is capable of speeds up to 65 km/h(40 mph) and is a 15-percent to 20-percent more productive unit than 218-t (240-st) trucks, at a lower operating cost per ton. The 930E-3 also provides enough torque and speed to get up and off ramps easier than mechanically driven trucks. And it can climb at altitudes up to 3,650 m(12,000 ft) without any fuel deration.

In 1987, the Rock Springs, WY district office of the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) began to develop an automated system to store, maintain and manipulate more than 14,000 drill hole logs contained in the district&apos;s office files for various solid leasable minerals. The development of this system was based predominantly on a trial-and-error basis, with many procedural changes incorporated over time. The current Automated Drill Hole Database and Analysis System will continue to evolve with new software developments and increased personal expertise in this field. The mission of the BLM&apos;s Branch of Solid Minerals is mandated by a series of federal laws. The most important are The Mineral Leasing Act, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, the Federal Coal Lease Amendments Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Several regulations, promulgated from these laws, dictate that BLM must perform certain tasks and functions as part of its specific duties. The regulations that apply to the BLM Solid Minerals program are codified at 43 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 3400 for coal, and at 43 CFR 3500 for non-energy solid leasable minerals, such as sodium, phosphate and potash. Specific functions required of the Branch of Solid Minerals necessitates the use of geologic and drill hole data analyses. These functions can be divided into pre-lease and post-lease. This paper presents the desulphurisation of a fine graphite powder below 80 µm by high gradient magnetic separation. The removal of pyrite (FeS2) and pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) from the fine graphite powder was carried out with a modified version of the Sala dry HGMS with vibration assistance. In addition, a comparative study with dry and wet HGMS systems has also been performed. In order to establish the performance of the desulphurisation, a test series of varying parameters such as magnetic induction, matrix type/configuration and vibration were performed. As an equipment/process for removing sulphurous impurities from the fine graphite powder, the dry HGMS is deemed useful and comparative with the wet HGMS.

Free energy of interaction between particles in water can be calculated if one knows the values of appropriate interfacial tensions, which in turn can be determined from the surface free energies of the particles involved. The latter can be determined using the Van Oss-Chaudhury-Good (OCG) equation. This method requires the measurement of contact angles of well-defined liquids on the surfaces of the particles of interest. In the present work, the contact angles were determined using heat of wetting, capillary rise, and thin-layer wicking methods. The results are compared, and the utility of the surface free energy data obtained from the contact angles are discussed.

INTRODUCTION It has been recognized for some time that major changes in mining methods will be required in the near future. Two types of factors contribute to this need for change. Intrinsic factors include ground control problems associated with mining at increasing depths, noise, dust, toxic fumes, and logistics problems which arise from operation in a cyclical fashion. Extrinsic factors include competition for labor from industries offering safer and less difficult work, pressure for less impact on the environment, and changing economic and political conditions. The search for new mining methods has resulted in extensive research being carried out on such novel approaches as thermal fragmentation, high-pressure water jets, sonic drilling, microwave fragmentation, and laser cutting, among others. Joy Manufacturing Co. has elected to concentrate on impact breaking in stopes as a first generation continuous hard rock miner. IMPACT BREAKING Fragmentation techniques show a drop in specific energy as efficiency improves. Specific energy is the energy consumed per unit volume of rock removed and is affected by such variables as rock material properties, fragmentation method used, operator skill, tool design, etc. Mechanical fragmentation methods generally have specific energies much lower than that of the more novel methods. Table 1 shows impact breaking to have an efficiency exceeded only by that of drill and blast methods and it is this high efficiency which led Joy to impactors as the subject for research on potential mechanisms for continuous mining in hard rock.

So good are things that from April 23 to 29 more than 500,000 visitors involved in those two industries attended the bauma 2007 Trade Show in Munich, Germany. Bauma is an international trade fair for construction and mining equipment that took place at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. It is hosted by Munich once every three years. This year was the most successful bauma ever and further strengthened the shows position as the world leader in the field.

This paper discusses how Bald Mountain Mine dramatically reduced mercury production by treating process solutions with a liquid reagent called UNR 811A. The reagent is marketed by Cherokee Chemical Co., Inc. A summary of the bench tests comparing several different reagents is given. The ensuing plant trial is discussed and results are presented. The plant trial treatment costs are discussed. Finally, potential cost savings are discussed.
