This paper provides an overview of the concepts of citations and journal impact factors, and the implications of these metrics for the Journal of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (JSAIMM). Two key research literature databases publish journal impact factors; namely, Web of Science and Scopus. Different equations are used to calculate journal impact factors and care should be exercised when comparing different journals. The JSAIMM has a low impact factor compared with some of the more prestigious journals. It nevertheless compares well with journals serving other mining sectors, such as the Canadian CIM Journal. The problems associated with journal impact factors are discussed. These include questionable editorial practices, the negative impact of this concept on good research, and the problem of a few highly cited papers distorting the journal impact factor. As a consequence, there is growing resistance to the use of journal impact factors to measure research excellence. The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment is a global movement striving for an alternative assessment of research quality. As a recommendation, the Editorial Board of the JSAIMM should adopt a pragmatic approach and not alter good journal policies simply to increase the journal impact factor. The focus should remain on publishing excellent quality papers. Marketing of the Journal, the quality of the published papers, and its open access policy should be used to counter the perception that journals with high impact factors are better options in which to publish good research material.

The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk.

"South Africa’s Northern Cape Province hosts semi-precious and gemstone occurrences that are sporadically mined on a small scale by local communities. Tiger’s eye, a gemstone known for its chatoyancy properties, is found in important deposits located near the town of Prieska, where is it intermittently mined. Challenges faced by small-scale and informal mining include mining without proper permits, risky mining practice in dangerous terrain, and illegal export of raw material without concerted effort at domestic beneficiation. As part of a study aimed at job creation and social upliftment in the region, tiger’s eye deposits in the Prieska area were assessed to assist small-scale miners to understand tiger’s eye grades and their distribution. This will allow not only more efficient and safer mining of these deposits, but also beneficiation of the raw product into tumbled stones, cabochons, jewellery, and other small artefacts for sale. A hub established in Prieska by Mintek trains locals in the beneficiation of tiger’s eye. Supply to the hub must make use of a consistent grading system, which is discussed in this paper. Together with proper mine licensing, such an approach will develop mining and beneficiation skills, and create and sustain employment for the local community. IntroductionTiger’s eye is a semi-precious stone known for its chatoyancy property, which is caused by parallel, silicified asbestos fibres that impart a silky lustre to specimens. Deposits of tiger’s eye in the surrounds of the town of Prieska, Northern Cape Province, formed the focus of a study aimed at small-scale mining and beneficiation of this commodity. The Prieska tiger’s eye deposits are located along the N10 route to Upington (Figure 1). Tiger’s eye is unevenly distributed and occurs as lenses of various sizes, interbedded in gently folded metasedimentary rocks of mostly banded iron formation (BIF). The tiger’s eye occurrence in the Northern Cape Province, especially in the Prieska area, has not been extensively researched. There is thus limited information available in the public domain. The lack of knowledge on tiger’s eye distribution has resulted in local small-scale miners adopting a trial-and-error method of mining. Basic geological mapping and field evaluation of the deposit, coupled with professional judgement, are important aspects of any small-scale mining operation and can contribute significantly to the formulation of various acceptable and equally viable mining methods and practices."

"SynopsisThe availability of advanced characterization techniques is integral to the development of advanced materials, not only during development phases, but in the manufactured components as well. At Necsa, two modern neutron diffractometers equipped with in-situ sample environments, as well as complementary X-ray diffraction instruments, are now available as User Facilities within the National System of Innovation in support of the South African research and industrial communities. Neutrons and X-rays, owing to their different interaction mechanisms with matter, offer complementary techniques for probing crystalline materials. Both techniques enable nondestructive investigation of phenomena such as chemical phase composition, residual stress, and texture (preferred crystallite orientation). More specifically, the superior penetration capabilities of thermal neutrons into most materials allows for the analysis of bulk or localized depth-resolved properties in a wide variety of materials and components. Materials that can be investigated include metals, alloys, composites, ceramics, and coated systems. In particular, depth-resolved analyses using neutron diffraction complements surface investigations using laboratory X-rays in many scientific and engineering topics. The diffraction techniques can add significant downstream value to the anticipated nuclear industry development activities.IntroductionMaterials characterization is central in understanding the relationship between the structure, properties, and performance in order to engineer materials that fit the performance criteria for specific applications. Optimum Coal Mine comprises numerous defunct, active, and future mining sections. The mine is primarily a large opencast coal mine; however, underground mining activities will be increasing steadily over the next five years. Opencast and underground mining activities have a significant impact on surface and groundwater resources. To ensure that the mine will be able to continue with its mining operations in the catchment, the extent of this impact requires that substantial intervention and mitigation measures need to be implemented to ensure the environmental integrity and economic use of the catchment's water resources. In developing a sustainable long-term mine water management strategy, numerous scenarios had to be analysed. The various scenarios are a combination of water and land management activities. The main components of the mine's integrated water management strategy include: ? Management of water recharge by continual and appropriate rehabilitation of disturbed land ? Beneficial re-use of impacted mine water for coal plant process water and mining operations ? Reclamation and desalination of remaining excess impacted mine water to potable standard. From the mine's long-term water balance, it is evident that the continued implementation of numerous water management actions is required to mitigate the water resources impact in a sustainable manner. In addition, the installation of a water reclamation plant at Optimum Coal Mine (15Ml/day) is a key step for the mine to achieve a zero impact target.

Metals make modern societies function, and increasingly, various high purity precious and special metals endow sustainability-driving technologies with specific functionalities. These metals become heavily intertwined within products, complicating end-of-life treatment. To counteract the resulting downcycling and potential depletion of scarce resources, maximising both the quantities and qualities of materials recovered during primary extraction and recycling, processes should be a priority in the pursuit of sustainable circular economy. Adopting a process simulation approach; a digital twin for the life cycle of cadmium-telluride solar photovoltaic (CdTe PV) modules was created. The system comprises an integrated metallurgical production system that produces, among others, cadmium, tellurium, selenium, zinc, copper, and lead, all of which are required to manufacture PV modules. System-wide resource efficiency and environmental impacts are assessed using exergy analysis and life cycle assessment, respectively. Simulation of this large and complex product life cycle at a high level of detail allows for the evaluation of potential system-wide effects of various production, recycling and residue exchange scenarios aimed at maximising the sustainability of the entire system. It diminishes the need to make arbitrary choices about allocation methods for the distribution of environmental impacts in multipleoutput production systems. Furthermore, it demonstrates the key importance of metallurgy in achieving circular economy. Poor phase separation and fine dissemination of the desired components within congruous slag phases are key challenges limiting the recoverability of values from slags by conventional beneficiation methods. Slag microstructure conditioning is a pragmatic approach to increasing themvalue-in-use of discard slags, especially when integrated with the broader smelter infrastructure. Although not yet tested on oxide slag systems, this paper explores the potential application of magnetohydrodynamic principles to the crystallization behaviour of bulk slags. Integrating the slag microstructure conditioning infrastructure to the existing smelter infrastructure is key to unlocking the economic value of slags because it is most economic to condition the properties of molten slag directly after tapping. A new business model that integrates smelting units to transversalmeconomic activities, such as cement production and suppliers of construction aggregates, canmsignificantly increase the circularity of metallurgical slags.

"Mud rushes are sudden inflows of fine wet ore within underground mines; they can harm people and equipment as well as cause production delays. Block and panel caving mines are prone to mud rushes in their production levels, with mud flowing from the drawpoints. Different mines have developed methods to control drawpoint conditions and thus perform safe ore extraction. The aim of this study is to develop a decision matrix and apply it to samples from drawpoints for the Diablo Regimiento mine, Codelco, El Teniente Division (Chile). The Abrams’s Cone was used to perform slump tests on mud samples and characterize their consistency by setting the saturation degree and packing. The unconfined strength for different saturation degrees and packing was then evaluated. The results show that conditions for fluid response in slump tests correspond to conditions for low strength in unconfined compression tests. We also found the water content value at which the flowing consistency changes from plastic to soft behaviour according to the slump test classification for each sample. This value varied between 12.2% and 16.9%, depending on the sample tested. Finally, a fluid security factor was defined in order to design an extraction pattern for the samples tested, based on the water content. We conclude that a very densely packed ore is not prone to flowing. The flow properties depend strongly on the specific properties of the ore tested, and consequently a specific criterion should be developed for different types of ore at a particular mine. The criterion developed for Diablo Regimiento ore provides critical water content values from 11% to 15%, depending on the ore type. IntroductionBlock/panel caving has the lowest cost and the highest production rates of all underground methods (Heslop, 2000; Hubert et al., 2000). Good management of the risks is important to ensure the security of personnel and infrastructure. Operational risks for the method include rockbursts, air blasts, and mud rushes (Hubert et al. 2000). A mud rush is defined as a sudden inflow of mud from a drawpoint or other underground opening into the mine (Butcher, Joughin, and Stacey, 2000; Butcher, Stacey, and Joughin, 2005). Mud rushes can cause dilution, production delays, and damage to equipment as well as injuries and fatalities. The elements necessary for mud rushes are mud-forming material, disturbances, a discharge point, and water (Butcher, Joughin, and Stacey, 2000). All these elements are present in block/panel caving mines. Mud-forming material comes from ore milled by the caving process; water comes from underground and surface sources. Drawpoints in the production level are discharge points for the mud. Finally, several types of disturbance could trigger the mud rush phenomena: blasting, earthquakes, operation of equipment (Call & Nicholas, Freeport McMoRan, and Hydrologic Consultants, 1998; Jakubec, Clayton, and Guest, 2012), arch collapse above drawbells (Butcher, Joughin, and Stacey, 2000; Butcher, Stacey, and Joughin, 2005; Jakubec, Clayton, and Guest, 2012) and ore drawing (Butcher, Joughin, and Stacey, 2000; Butcher, Stacey, and Joughin, 2005; Call & Nicholas, Freeport McMoRan, and Hydrologic Consultants, 1998; Jakubec, Clayton, and Guest, 2012)."

Ore sorting is a technology that is increasingly used to process primary raw materials. Timeconsuming and expensive empirical state-of-the-art test work is carried out to assess whether the use of ore sorting for the enrichment of a particular ore makes technical and economic sense. With the innovative simulation-based approach presented here, it is possible to direct the selection of a suitable sensor based on quantitative mineralogical and textural data, thus avoiding much of the empirical studies. Required data can be collected quickly and cost-effectively using available methods of automated mineralogy. The obtained parameters such as mineral grain size distribution, modal mineralogy, mineral area and mineral density distribution have been utilised in this study to simulate the prospects of success of ore sorting, applying different types of sensors. Empirical tests with commercially available sensor systems have been conducted to experimentally validate the predictions of the simulations. The estimation of the target mineral grade can be further optimised by the use of machine learning algorithms for the integration of automated mineralogy data and sensor data. The approach can easily be adapted to other types of raw materials and thus has great potential to become a key technology for the optimisation of processing experiments. Yeast-derived bola-amphiphiles have attracted considerable attention for their applications in various industrial sectors in recent years. However, only a few studies on this class of surfactant were reported to be relevant to mineral processing applications. In this paper, one of the novel surfactants, acidic glucolipid obtained from Candida bombicola sophorolipids and modified by using Penicillium decumbens naringinase substrate has been evaluated for its interaction with chalcocite and calcite minerals because of a new Cu-ore Nussir deposit in Norway containing calcite impurity. The interaction of glucolipid biosurfactant with copper sulphide and carbonate minerals was investigated with zeta potential, adsorption and FTIR studies, and also by Hallimond tube and bench scale flotation tests using pure minerals and Nussir copper ore, respectively. The results illustrate collector adsorption and flotation of copper sulfides at neutral pH. The bench-scale flotation results demonstrate that copper sulphides can be selectively floated from carbonate and silicate gangue minerals. This study underlines the glycolipid’s high potential for its use as collector for flotation of valuable copper sulphide minerals. Keywords: Flotation, biosurfactants, adsorption

The South African mineral resource royalty system, initiated in 2010, employs a hybrid ad valorem approach tied to profitability ratios. This rate is then applied to the total revenue from mineral sales. In this article we explore how the profitability ratio in the mineral resource royalty formulae interacts with the gold tax formula as applied to South African gold mines, devising a strategy for cut-off grade optimization. The study focuses on nine narrow, tabular-reef (Witwatersrand) gold mines. The approach involves a mixed-integer cut-off grade optimizer utilizing Excel Solver, incorporating relevant royalty and income tax formulae. Different mineral resource royalty cost scenarios were examined. Ignoring these costs in the break-even analysis lowers the cut-off grade but slightly boosts profits compared to considering expected costs. The developed optimizer model, recognizing the profitability aspect of the mineral resource royalty and income tax formulae, yielded a 6% lower cut-off grade than the base case. This is significant for increasing mine life. While the profit differences are marginal (0.2% compared to the break-even base case), substantial improvements were noted: a 6% increase in stope tons above cut-off grade, and a 4% rise in total revenue. Enhanced resource utilization (3% extra gold kilograms) reduces necessary development and overall costs, allowing for a reduction in the cut-off grade and ultimately, more profit.

Discussions on reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction (RPEEE) include the CRIRSCO 2019 reporting template, JORC 2012, SAMREC 2016, CIM 2019 Guideline, and Regulation SK-1300. These reporting codes all conform to the principles of reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. To demonstrate that all mineral resources align with the RPEEE principles, the Competent Person is responsible for endorsing the mineral resource estimate. Moreover, establishing mineral resources and RPEEE requires technical input from numerous technical specialists, such as mining and geotechnical engineers, metallurgical engineers, social and environmental specialists, financial and governmental practitioners, and more. The aim is to improve the transparency of the disclosure of mineral resources and guarantee the investor or potential investor that the reporting of mineral resources is based on reliable technical, economic, environmental, social, and other relevant factors. This paper discusses the important protocols and definitions in some international reporting codes for the purposes of developing a guide memoire that will assist the Competent Person to interpret, establish and apply RPEEE appropriately and easily.

In the 19th century, mining in northern Chile was of great economic importance. Today, the ruinsof the copper smelters and abundant fragments of refractory bricks from their furnaces remain. Therefractory materials have not been previously studied. the origin, physical and chemical properties, and compressive strength of 10 different samples of historical refractory bricks collected on-site were investigated. The characterization results showed that the bricks are silico-aluminous, unlike the magnesium-chromium bricks used by current foundries. It was determined that 90% of them were produced in the UK and 10% were manufactured in Chile. The phases present are mullite, quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite, and the chemical composition corresponds mainly to SiO2. The compressive strength of the historical bricks is similart to those currently used,. These results may contribute to the knowledge of the 19th century mining and metallurgical historical heritage of Chile and the UK.

Eccentric High Pressure Centrifugal Comminution (eHPCC) is a novel comminution device that provides a single step to achieve a desired target grind size. The mechanisms within the unit mirror particle breakage that is akin to high-pressure-grinding rolls (HPGR) and high-intensity-attrition with air classification. eHPCC receives lump and can produce a product P80 such that the progeny are at or less than natural grain size of the feed. The unit operates in either closed or open-circuit. The grinding zone is dry and free of steel grinding media. This paper presents evidence of eHPCC-2 capable of selective and preferential mineral liberation. A recent test campaign on a blend of underground quartzgold- vein ore was completed. The feed to eHPCC-2 trial was SAG mill trommel oversize (low-grade pebble rejects). eHPCC-2 operated open-circuit with air-fluidisation in the rotating-grinding-chamber, classifying particles based on terminal velocity of the air-swept product particles, displaying size and mineral composition classification taking place at the same time. There is an opportunity for future industrial research targeting eHPCC as an advanced integrated comminution and classification technology. Pt-based alloys for high-temperature applications in aggressive environments have been under development for over 10 years, and are targeted to be used as either as bulk, or as coatings. The alloys comprise Pt, Al, Cr, and Ru, and the microstructure has been improved by composition to a best possible analogue of the nickel-based superalloys, which these alloys could partially replace. This was necessary because the previous best alloy had a strengthening precipitate volume proportion of only approximately 40 vol.%, whereas the nickel-based superalloys have around 70 per cent, and a lower volume would mean that the strength would not be the best that could be obtained. The microstructures were assessed using electron microscopy, and have been related to the alloys? hardness values. The current microstructures are much more like those of NBSAs, with a high proportion of the strengthening ~Pt3Al precipitates. Since the samples have to be small (platinum is expensive), hardness has been used as an indication of strength. Nano-indentation studies showed that the hardness and Young?s modulus were higher for ~Pt3Al than the (Pt) matrix. More extensive oxidation studies have been undertaken on the previous optimum sample, and the effect of cooling rate after heat treatment has also been ascertained. In addition, the samples were studied after different heat treatment times, and cross-sections were made in order to characterize the alumina scale that formed. The oxide scales of Pt-11Al-3Cr-2Ru (at.%) up to 100 h exposure did not spall, and were at least as good as those of the ternary alloys. There was no discernable Al depletion zone in the substrate, although it could have been at a greater depth than thickness of the samples studied. Further additions to the Pt-Al-Cr-Ru alloys have been studied, to increase the melting temperature as well as to reduce the platinum content without compromising the properties. Reduced platinum content would have the benefits of reduced density and cost. The target elements include vanadium and niobium, of which vanadium is of special interest, since it is a South African product. Before these additions could be made, phase equilibria studies were undertaken so that the maximum addition could be ascertained, and also to check any possible ternary phases, which could be deleterious. Work on the Pt-Al-V system revealed a ternary phase, ~V27Pt54Al19 (at.%), which has a eutectic reaction with (Pt). The maximum V addition is likely to be around 15 at.%, otherwise ~Pt3V or the ternary phase will form, and not the required (Pt)/~Pt3Al phases.

Projects or project-orientated approaches have become a common form of work in nearly all sectors of economies. This has led to concepts such as ‘projectified’ and ‘project orientated’ organizations. By defining projectification of a company, industry, or economy as the share of project work in total work, one can reasonably determine the impact that project management, and by default projectification, has had on that company, industry, or economy in terms of staff optimization and allocation. This paper presents the results for such a projectification study of the South African mining industry. This sector has long been a significant contributor to the country’s economy from a gross value added (GVA) and employment point of view. Understanding the impact of projectification and the project management way of work on this industry may potentially add significant value to both the mining and project management knowledge areas. We show that although the mining industry is considered by some to operate in archaic ways, the level of projectification has increased over time, and now represents approximately one third of all work conducted.

From 2022 to 2040, the global demand for mineral commodities is projected to increase by fourfold to six-fold, largely due to traditional drivers such as population growth and urbanisation compounded by the adoption of decarbonisation technologies that are more mineral intensive than fossil fuel technologies. To meet this projected demand, companies operating in the minerals industry should accelerate the development of mineral projects. Since most of the companies generally operate in multiple geographical, regulatory or legislative jurisdictions, it is critical that the information on Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves they report on in the public domain should be comparable and consistent across different jurisdictions. The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards fosters alignment of national and regional mineral reporting codes through an internationally accepted template that creates common technical understanding of definitions, classification, estimation processes and the Public Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves. The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards Template-based codes guide reporting at respective national and regional levels. Since mine planning is critical in the conversion of mineral resources to mineral reserves, a shared technical understanding should aid comparability of mine planning results. However, differences persist in the way mine planning results are reported. Unlike most previous studies, which have primarily focused on comparing mineral reporting codes, this paper updates and extends such comparisons by exploring how similarities or differences in reporting should influence the mine planning process. It also recommends some principle and process changes to assist mine planning professionals to improve consistency and comparability in reporting mine planning results.

"Bench-scale flotation tests play a major role in the geometallurgical process value chain. Despite their apparent simplicity, these tests pose pitfalls in terms of operation, as well as the interpretation and modelling of results. In this paper we highlight key aspects to consider in generating accurate and reproducible experimental results, and critically review some assumptions relating to the estimation of entrainment and froth recovery. We subsequently focus on first-order equations to model kinetics and propose a method that accounts more realistically for the decay in kinetics over the duration of a float, and the contributions of froth stability and hence mass pull. The method was applied to three case studies on platinum group metal (PGM) ores and matched or outperformed first-order, two-component models. Also, it allows for a deeper analysis of the integrity of the bench-scale flotation results. IntroductionGeometallurgy is a structured, multidisciplinary approach that integrates key data from the geological, mining, mineralogical, and metallurgical aspects of the value chain to construct spatial models of an ore deposit such that the overall economic benefit and sustainability of an operation can be optimized. Process geometallurgy is aimed primarily at enhancing metallurgical efficiency and plant throughput by the application of appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as supporting production planning and operational strategies to reduce the impact of highly variable ores. With flotation being the dominant concentrating process in the mineral value chain, the bench-scale flotation test is an important characterization tool – a relatively cheap, simple, and rapid way to obtain key information about the ore and its amenability to economic extraction of valuable minerals. This includes the evaluation of different ore types and the implications of mineralogical composition and texture for comminution and floatability, the effect of the grinding environment on the liberation of minerals, the electrochemical environment in the pulp (Bradshaw et al., 2006), the screening of reagents to improve floatability (Ekmekci et al., 2003), and the role of hydrodynamics in the recovery of valuables and the entrainment of gangue (Amini et al., 2016; Wang et al., 2016). It is also a critical tool in auditing the performance of a flotation plant by hot floats, paving the way for concept and feasibility studies and providing essential data on kinetics for the purposes of scale-up, optimization, and simulation of flotation circuits."

"A system has been developed to simulate the mining of the Mufulira orebody. The main output from the system is a picture-gram from which the start date and effective life of all proposed mining faces can be measured. This information provides schedule dates for the completion of major capital development projects and stope preparation activities.The orebody must be divided horizontally into main levels and vertically into blocks of equal interval. Ore reserves are defined by specifying the tonnage contained in each block and main level. Mining faces are defined by their co-ordinates, and may themselves be split into sublevels. The simulation maintains an echelon between contiguous sublevels. Other face parameters control the speed of mining, the availability and relative priority of the face.The required production from each crusher/shaft system is specified. The technique of simulating the mining process in order to achieve the required production is described."
