Magotteaux, with the co-operation of Anglo Platinum, has erected a fully instrumented pilot plant at Frank concentrator, which is being used to study the influence of a variety of grinding parameters. This paper will discuss only the influence of mill speed and pulp density on secondary stage grinding. A Ø0.82 x1 m open circuit mill was used with reclaimed Merensky tailings as feed. The conclusions apply to this pilot plant but further investigation needs to be done to verify whether the same trends will be applicable to a large industrial-scale mill.

"In mineral resource evaluations, geostatistical methods known as global change of support allow prediction of the theoretical histogram and gradetonnage curves prior to interpolations or simulations of grades. Two methods commonly used by professionals to guide the choice of interpolation parameters and assess results are the discrete Gaussian model (DGM) and the indirect lognormal correction (IndLog). These models rely upon an estimate of the dispersion variance of the blocks, which is derived by numerical integration of the variogram model over a discretized block. Due to difficulties in obtaining well-formed traditional experimental variograms (especially in the presence of outliers and limited clustered data), many professionals prefer to use ‘normalized’ variograms such as correlogram (non-ergodic variogram), pairwise-relative, or variogram of the normal score transform. A series of simulations with different grade distributions and variogram models are used to assess the performances and robustness of the various variogram estimators with respect to the DGM and IndLog global change of support. Our results show that the traditional variogram, the correlogram, and normal score variogram have better performances, compared to pairwise, for both DGM and IndLog. Moreover, DGM provided better results than IndLog for the grade distributions that are not strictly lognormal. These findings provide valuable guides for geostatistics practitioners. IntroductionWhen reporting resource estimates,practitioners are required to follow generalstandards described in the NI43-101 (CIMguidelines), JORC, or SAMREC codes. One cangenerally recognize three main parts directlyrelated to the block model:•,Pre-processing: exploratory data analysis (EDA), domaining, capping, compositing, declustering, variography•,Processing: block size, neighbourhood, interpolation types (linear or nonlinear)•,Post-processing: classification, reporting.Pre-processing aims to simplify and strengthen the processing step. Ideally, domaining, capping. and compositing is aimed at defining a single homogenous population. During the processing phase, a common practice is to use a block size corresponding to the planned selective mining unit (SMU). In most precious metal deposits (gold, notably), the SMU size is frequently smaller than the recommended half data spacing (Journel and Huijbregts 1978), resulting in high estimation variance and either a high degree of smoothing if the regression slope is managed or a high degree of conditional bias if it is not. Most actual resource estimates are made using block sizes between one-quarter to one-sixth of the average data spacing, sometimes even smaller. In addition to the block size, the interpolation choices for the neighbourhood selection and interpolator (e.g. inverse distance (ID) or ordinary kriging) are often based on the Qualified Person’s (the QP) experience and some basic validation plots that often do not consider the conditional bias (e.g. trends or SWATHs plots, which are designed to compare two sets of population using a one-dimensional graph)."

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, ferrochromium, alloys, Zimbabwe Zimbabwe Alloys was founded in 1949 by a consortium led by the John Brown Group. It was the first ferrochrome plant in Africa. The establishment of the refinery was necessitated by an increase in world stainless steel demand and the need to reduce cost by shipping alloy rather than chrome ore. The location of the refinery in Gweru was influenced by a number of factors, not least of which were the abundance of chrome ore deposits, access to inexpensive power from Kariba, the availability of reductant coke from Hwange, accessibility to ports (as the town was well served with rail and road networks second to none in the country), and of course cheaper labour costs. The production of Low Carbon Ferrochrome (LCFeCr) was commissioned in 1953 and produced from an Open Arc Furnace with a Submerged Arc Furnace producing Ferrosilicon Chrome (FeSiCr) that is used as a reductant in the production of LCFeCr. An experimental furnace was commissioned in 1958 to help with efficiency and control on larger furnaces. A second Submerged Furnace was commissioned in 1963. Three other Submerged Arc Furnaces were built between 1967 and 1974. Several mines were acquired between 1974 and 1984, as a strategic move to ensure the growth of the refinery. A briquetting plant was commissioned in 1977, enabling the use of friable ores to enhance the capacity of ore supplies and ore cost management. A plant to recover alloy from slag was established in 1994 to capitalize on market demand without large capital outlay that would be required to build other furnaces to increase capacity. Zimbabwe Alloys has created employment opportunities throughout the years. There have been direct employment opportunities at both the refinery and the mining divisions. With time, indirect employment was realised both upstream and downstream of the refining process, enhancing the livelihood of numerous people. Zimbabwe Alloys' involvement with various labour skills has, of necessity, enabled it to develop a culture of safety at work, home, and play. Zimbabwe Alloys has contributed to society by participating and funding various local initiatives primarily to impact positively on societal needs. The latest development was in 1996, when Zimbabwe Alloys entered into a Technical Transfer Agreement with Japan Metals and Chemicals to improve the efficiencies and hence the profitability of the LCFeCr production process. A significant quantity of various alloys has been produced since inception, and significant foreign currency has been earned for the country. This was in spite of challenges that included the cyclic nature of market prices, the upheavals of sanctions affecting the macro-economic environment, and the challenges related to the deteriorating grade of chrome ore and reductant coke.

Zircon is a naturally occurring silicate of zirconium, which is used in large quantities (~1 million tonnes per annum) for its refractory properties and its extreme chemical inertness. All zircons contain uranium and thorium bound into the crystal lattice, generally at levels up to 500 ppm of uranium plus thorium. This paper focuses on one aspect of the zircon industry—the ability to safely transport large quantities of zircon sand. Currently zircon is not classified as a radioactive material for transport purposes. However, this is because of a factor used in the exemption clauses of the IAEA code on safe transport of radioactive materials. The objective of this study was to determine the validity of this factor, and was submitted as part of an IAEA Coordinated Research Project (CRP). The study is based primarily on measured rather than modelled data and covers the transport of large quantities of zircon from producers in South Africa to customers in Europe. Both occupational exposure of workers and exposure of members of the public have been considered. The transport routes studied cover rail, road, ocean-going ship and inland barge transport of unpackaged bulk products. The study showed that the most exposed member of the public would receive 10µSv/annum,while the most exposed worker would receive 144µSv/annum of exposure. It is concluded that these levels are well below all regulatory limits for such activities involving naturally occurring materials. The study also showed that normal operational exposures are higher than those in accident scenarios, a feature which does not occur with higher activity materials. It is further concluded that the study validates the use of the factor of 10 in TS-R-1, as applied to zircon sand. Additionally it is also concluded that the exemption currently applied to the transportation of bulk zircon sand is valid.

The reassessment of coal reserves has become a matter of urgency and has come as a result of the present situation of the industry, in the context of globalized coal economies, as well as new mining legislation and the advantages and difficulties of domestic coal suppliers. The de Jager report concerning coal reserves, released twenty years ago, can no longer be used as an estimate for accurately forecasting South Africa’s future coal production. The new reserve and resource study will promote the diversification of energy sources and provide a clearer view of the future of coal mining in the country. With plans to increase South Africa’s coal export capacity to approximately 84 million tons by 2005, it is uncertain whether the country really has sufficient reserves to meet this expansion, as well as satisfy the projected increase in inland demand. The face of South Africa’s coal industry and by association, the economy of our coal-dependent country, are both set to change. This is mainly due to factors such as the demise of most of the large collieries over the last approximately twenty years, growing numbers of economic empowerment producers, the emergence of strong competition in the export market, the dawn of Clean Coal Technologies (CCTs) and the Kyoto Protocol The paper will attempt to dispel some of the current myths about coalfields and reserves and highlight potential areas of high quality coal reserves, available mainly to new entrants in the industry. "The Collieries Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa is developing a coherent system of programs to aid in the full spectrum of activities arising in the planning of new as well as operating mining enterprises. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the design and application of two subsystems in the complex.One of these subsystems is an initial version of a production simulator. This program draws upon a model of a mining enterprise and simulates the operational and financial aspects of a set of alternative mine production plans.These plans are specified in terms of proposed sequences of operations. Details such as reserves, production rates, resource requirements and so on, are taken from the model.Physically, the model takes the form of a cross-referenced data base, maintained by means of a general file maintenance system which is another subsystem described.The paper concludes with a description and analysis of the first practical application of the two programs."

Introduction In South African metalliferous mines, stoping operations are largely confined to narrow, tabular orebodies making mechanization extremely difficult. Limited flexibility in terms of stope width has necessitated drilling by means of hand held, pneumatic rock drills at most of our operations. As the largest producer of platinum in the world, we drill in excess of forty million stope blast holes per annum. Cleaning of the broken ore is also done by conventional means—utilizing scrapers and scraper winches. Conventional methods such as these carry high costs in terms of risk exposure as well as labour intensity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of a long hole stoping system suitable for the narrow platinum reefs. The new system had to be substantially safer and more cost effective than conventional mining. We selected a site that was conducive to mechanized mining and set out the parameters that we considered would meet our requirements. We then conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the conceptualized long hole stoping system in terms of specific goals. An analysis of the proposed system identified the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). One of the most critical goals was to be able to create a man-freestope. This would mitigate the safety risk associated with normal stoping operations, as well as the inefficiency cost previously referred to. Other challenges included setting targets for long hole accuracy, stoping width reduction and specific blasting system performance for long hole stoping. We also modelled a critical span that we considered to be inherently safe and to ensure hangingwall stability, throw-blastcleaning and overall system productivity. Anglo Platinum Research and Development and Sandvik Tamrock entered into an agreement for the supply of a specialized long hole-drilling machine. The system was implemented and tested by the mine with the support of the other participants. The results achieved met our expectations. It was demonstrated that with this method of mining it is possible to have a man-free/support-free stope face and to achieve a reduction in shaft head cost per ton whilst reducing dilution. Mine personnel and Tamrock carried out a full risk assessment on the drill rig before transporting underground. A further risk assessment was carried out when the machine was in position underground. "SynopsisA number of important areas in nuclear fuel cycle, at both the front end and back end, offer ideal opportunities for the application of non-destructive evaluation techniques. These techniques do not only provide opportunities for non-invasive testing of e.g. irradiated materials, but also play an important role in the development of new materials in the nuclear sector. The advantage of penetrating radiation used as probe in the investigation and testing of nuclear materials makes X-ray and neutron radiography (2D) and tomography (3D) suitable for various applications in the total nuclear fuel cycle. The unique and different interaction modes of the two radiation probes with materials provide several opportunities. Their complementary nature and non-destructive character makes them most suitable for nuclear material analyses, analytical method development, and the evaluation of the performance of existing nuclear material compositions. This article gives an overview of the X-ray and neutron radiography/tomography applications in the field of nuclear material testing, and highlights a few of the success stories. Several selected areas of application in the nuclear fuel cycle are discussed to illustrate the complementary nature of these techniques as applied to nuclear materials.IntroductionDuring the development of new materials for the nuclear industry, materials testing and characterization are of the outmost importance to maintain safety standards and reliability. No compromise on safety in the workplace in any area within the total nuclear fuel cycle can be tolerated, and therefore most in-situ material characterization and testing is conducted by certified and qualified personnel schooled in destructive and non-destructive testing (DT and NDT) methods. Certification and qualification in NDT can be obtained through many training centres in South Africa in accordance with European, American, and other international standards (SGS, n.d.; SAIW, n.d.; African NTD Centre, n.d.)."

High density slurry and paste tailings systems offer significant environmental benefits primarily related to reduced water consumption. However, these potential advantages need to be evaluated on a project-by-project basis. The successful design of a thickened or paste tailings system requires that the system is designed to accommodate the effect of the high density slurry on pumps, pipelines and the overall system operation. The transport system must be designed as an integrated unit and the interaction of all the components need to be considered. The transport system includes the slurry preparation plant, the pump station and the pipeline. This paper assesses the impact of increasing the slurry density in a platinum tailings system from conventional densities to thickened and paste tailings densities. As slurry density and rheology increase, there is a sharp increase in energy consumption for the additional water savings and this additional cost needs to be considered. A case study shows that there is a considerable benefit in increasing densities to the point at which tailings can be still be deposited in the standard manner. For existing systems, increasing density can result in an increased capacity at a marginal power cost, provided that the slurry is not too viscous. For a new system, a smaller pump and pipeline can result in lower capital costs and a marginally higher energy cost, if the optimum density is selected. Keywords: tailings, paste, pumping, slurry

Computer Integrated Mining (CIMG) is a process of using computer networks to transform islands of enabling technologies into a highly interconnected mining system. CIMG involves the integration of advanced technologies at various levels in the mine business to achieve higher flexibility, better quality of processes and control, and improved profitability. Justifying the benefits of CIMG are difficult as many of the advantages are derived from improved flexibility, quality, and control. Justification is based on the evaluation of the benefits to be gained, compared to the required capital investment. Management tools used in mining are currently inadequate in assessing the value of advanced technology whose benefits are primarily qualitative. A key aspect of successful implementation is management acceptance, which has to be won through the capability to justify the technology's financial costs and the true value of all of its benefits. The manufacturing industry faced similar justification difficulties when adopting advanced technology in factories. A significant amount of funding and research was invested into developing management strategies and approaches to justification. Many of the problems that faced the transformation of the manufacturing industry in the late eighties and early nineties are now facing mining. The solutions derived for manufacturing may help mining in its transition to an increased reliance on integration technology. Reviewing the industrial history of computer integrated manufacturing identifies several tools and strategic frameworks that can be adapted for mining. This Spotlight gives a brief summary of the proposed 1991 tax amendments of relevance to mines and mining houses. It should be read together with the author's article South African mining tax in the 1990's', which appeared in the August 1990 issue of this Journal. A number of tax amendments of relevance to the mining industry were proposed by the Minister of Finance in his March 1991 budget speech. In addition, certain other measures that may be implemented were set out in the budget review document released at the same time. A word of caution is necessary: these measures will become law only if and when they are enacted in the appropriate legislation. When this legislation is tabled in June, it may not contain all of the measures discussed below, some of the measures may appear in modified form, and other measures not discussed at the time of the budget may well appear. Unless otherwise stated, the 1991 tax amendments will affect companies with years of assessment ending in the twelve-month period to 31st March, 1992.

Present day capital costs are analyzed for a 2,000 metric tonne per day (MTPD) pyrite burning plant and compared with a sulphur burning plant of the same capacity. Power, raw material and steam production rates are then compared for the two facility types. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to highlight the impact changing sulphur, pyrite, capital and operating costs have on the relative economics of these feeds. Technological improvement effects on capital cost and energy recovery are also discussed. Besides the steam produced from the burning of pure sulphur or pyrite, plants using an advanced form of heat recovery can produce up to 10 bar steam using heat from acid formation. The quantity depends on the overall water balance which is influenced by such factors as gas strength and product acid concentration. Modern materials and innovative process design also improve the ability to increase the high pressure steam from the roaster boiler in pyrite plants above the traditional 1.25 kg of superheated steam per kg of acid produced.

The process of initiating opencast blasts through long cables is onerous. An obvious alternative is to replace these with radio controlled firing apparatus. Such devices appear from time to time and with the advance of telecommunications, more are likely to appear. However, there are two crucial and seemingly intractable obstacles to overcome: firstly, the problem of malfunction of the system, which can either fire prematurely or go into a state of suspense in which it is unknown whether firing might unexpectedly occur, and secondly, the problem of terrorism, as such a system could provide the capability for an off the shelf remote bomb. The issues of accessibility and electronic reliability when linked to explosives in a mining environment have to be demonstrated to be adequately covered before serious consideration should be given to these systems, up to now largely confined to military applications.

Investing in a mining venture can be risky and stakeholders need transparent, unbiased reports to understand the Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves a mining company holds. Readability and textual choice can be used consciously to manipulate perceptions, or it can be done unconsciously. This exploratory study investigates the readability and textual choice of supplementary Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Reports of companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The results indicate that narrative manipulation occurs in these reports through word choices that make the reports difficult to read, as well as specific narrative selections. This reduces the informational value of the reports. The results of the study will be useful to various stakeholders, such as mining company management, investors, investment specialists, financial analysts, and even employees and the general community, who all use these reports to make important decisions. It is also useful for the preparers of the Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Reports, Competent Persons, and other technical specialists to be aware of readability and that certain textual choices can affect the interpretation of these reports. It is recommended that bodies such as the JSE and the SAMREC and SAMVAL Code committees consider adding a plain language requirement to regulations, guidelines, and codes to ensure transparent, unbiased, and objective reports.

Balkema Publishers, Rotterdam, Netherlands. This paper is a study of the ventilation, cooling and refrigeration system design of the Mindola copper mine in Zambia. The challenges that were addressed varied from the restrictions imposed by an ageing infrastructure to the requirement for increasing the annual production rate, coupled to the introduction of a higher level of mechanization while maintaining acceptable conditions and limiting total ownership costs. A description of how the ventilation, refrigeration and cooling systems were modelled in order to obtain the projected heat loads associated with two different mining methods over the life of the project. The methodology included a number of iterations to optimise the design and include aspects such as the expected inrush of hot fissure water, the operation of diesel machinery at depths in excess of 1500m below surface, developing a cost-efficient cooling strategy and selection of the refrigeration machinery to meet the requirements imposed by the cooling strategy. This paper demonstrates the successful implementation of an integrated design approach.
