A table that greatly simplifies determination of metastable transitions in mass spectra has been prepared. All the mathematically possible metastable transitions of any compound whose molecular weight lies between 26 and 150 can be determined from the table without calculation. The method of utilizing the table is described, using selected peaks from the spectrum of normal butane for illustration. In the mass spectrometer, ions are formed in the isatron and accelerated through a series of slits. Most of these ions reach the collector without further change, but a few dissociate in transit to form new ions. These ions appear in the mass spectrum at neither the mass--to-charge ratio (m/e) of the original ion nor that of the new ion. The Welcome Creek Wilderness has small, dispersed gold placers. Pockets in the 25.5 million yd3 (19.5 million m3) of alluvium along Welcome and Rock Creeks have as much as $5.61 gold/yd3 ($7.34/m3) at $500/troy oz ($16.08/g). All the alluvium averages 20.1 cents gold/yd3 (26.3 cents/m3). Because of the low average gold content large-scale placer mining would not be economically feasible. Small-scale selective pocket mining, however, may be profitable. The alluvium along the streams in the Wilderness has little apparent potential for production of sand, gravel, or stone because alternate sources are closer to markets. The four lode prospects known within the Wilderness appear to have low mineral potential. No oil, gas, uranium, or geothermal energy sources are known to be present.

E. Wood. - It is shown that explosion shattering by impact is favored by large charges and by low ratio of water to charge. For 400-gram charges of dolomite crushed through 48 mesh the steam costs are less than 5 cents per ton of dolomite obtained. This is within the range of present steam costs for ball-milling dolomite.Electrical Properties of Minersl Aggergates I. Natural and Artificial Aggregates Crystallized Lead Sulphide By R.S. Dean and John Koster - This paper deals with the electrical properties of natural and synthetic galena. It is shown that massive crystalline galena has a normal positive temperature coefficient of resistance, whereas fine-grained steel galena has a negative temperature coefficient, the curve R v. T being exponential in form. That steel galena behaves somewhat like a leaky condenser is indicated by ballistic and alternating-current bridge measurements. In determining the cause of the erratic results of alternating-current resistance measurements it was observed that the measured re¬sistance was a function of the current through the specimen. The direct-current resistance was found to be proportional to the square of a superimposed radio-frequency current and independent of the frequency.The influence of grain size or the amount of metallic interface on the voltage-current characteristics at various temperatures on synthetic galena pastilles was studied. It is proved that the volts v. amperes curves are linear for all sizes and temperatures, that they have an intercept which is apparently a linear function of the temperature, and that their slopes are exponential functions of the temperature and give rise to a negative temperature coefficient of resistance.Apparatus for determing the Magnetic Constants of Mineral Powders by V,H, Gottschalk,and C. W. Davis.- A modified isthmus permeameter having a spark-suppressed primary and a multiplier in the secondary circuit to regulate the effect of capsules functioning as a twin isthmus is used to obtain quantitative data and normal induction and hystersis curves from small amounts of powdered material at fields surpassing 3.000 oersteds. Data and curves are given to demonstrate the calibration of the apparatus and the reproducibility of its results. Applications and limitations of the apparatus are noted.Magnetization Curves for Magnetite Poeders by V. H. Gottschalk and F. S. Wartman.- This paper gives measurements on four lots of purified and analyzed magnetites in mixed fractions with especial reference to the variation of permeability with grain size and with dilution by an inert material."

Cameroon's mining industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. The value of petroleum output was estimated at $1 billion.2 The 1982 gross domestic product (GOP) was approximately $8.4 billion. During 1981, crude oil export revenues increased in value 30%, comprising approximately 56% of Cameroon's total export earnings. The 1982-87 5-year plan emphasized, hydrocarbon and agricultural development and targeted the exploitation of bauxite and clay deposits. New petroleum legislation was promulgated on November 26, 1982. Public Law No. 82-20 detailed hydrocarbon companies' obligations concerning oil and gas discoveries and exploitation. In general, the Cameroon Government has participated in joint ventures with private companies and has levied a 57.5% petroleum tax plus adjustable royalties. Exploration expenses were paid by concession holding companies, and the Government in the past has reimbursed 50% of expenses under certain conditions.

The, large volumes of low A. P. I. gravity oil that will remain in many shallow fields of California when such oils no longer can be recovered profitably by pumping are important potential sources of oil when ways and means are found to remove them from the reservoir sands. Estimated ultimate oil recoveries in many of the "low-gravity fields" of the San Joaquin Valley in California indicate that less than 25 percent (on the average) of the original oil will be recovered. These oils have viscosities of 1,000 or more centipoises at reservoir temperatures and, because of their high viscosity and low intensity of the reservoir pressure, the quantities that will be retained in the sands ultimately are so large and their recovery is such a challenge to petroleum engineers that the Bureau of Mines has made the study of their possible recovery one of its major projects. The fact that a slight increase of temperature materially reduces the viscosity of low A. P. I. gravity oils has 'prompted the use of various means for increasing the temperature of the oil in the reservoir sands and hence the rate of flow and Completeness of recovery of the oil. Hot oil, hot water, heated air, and natural gas, steam, super-heated steam, and the products of combustion have been circulated in wells to raise the temperature of the oil it the sands; electric heaters have been installed in wells, and butane and air have been intermittently exploded and the flames propagated through the tubing to the "pay" zones. None of the methods, however, have been entirely satisfactory for the recovery of large quantities of oil.

Review of the literature on solid solutions discloses that the relation between composition and magnetic susceptibility is not linear . Recalculation using a transformation of composition values to parameter v values provides for a linear relation with the magnetic susceptibility to the 1/2 power . Application to minerals is illustrated by the olivine and enstentite series .

All known resources within the four proposed RARE II additions to the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness in northwestern California occur in the Gig Butte-Shinbone study area (fig. 1). No mineral resources are Figure 1.--NEAR HERE. known in the East Fork, Murphy blade, or Wilderness Contiguous units. About 2,400 tons (2,177 t) of subeconomic manganese resources averaging 9.5 percent manganese have been estimated at the Blue Jay Mine in the Big Butte-Shinbone unit. In addition about 9,700 tons (8,793 t) of subeconomic chromium-nickel-cobalt resources in thin laterite soil at the Grubstake Prospect contain about 1.27 percent chromium oxide, 0.45 percent nickel, and 0.03 percent cobalt. Adjacent Ultramafic rock outcrops have pods averaging 2.5 percent chromium oxide (Cr203); one pod contains about 40 tons (36 t) of indicated subeconomic resources.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of a general investigation of mines and mineral deposits in the Upper Mississippi lead and zinc field, attention of the Bureau of Mines was first directed to the Coker mines area by the presence of large tonnages of old mill tailings containing economically recoverable percentages of lead and zinc. Later, the results of extensive geologic studies of the area were presented to the Bureau of Mines by the Federal Geological Survey, directing attention to the possibility of extending the known ore limits of the area to the north and northeast of the old Coker No. 1 mine workings.With this end in view, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of churn drilling and sampling. This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained during the period of the Bureau of Mines investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The blast -hole method for drilling and breaking ground is not new to the mining industry . For several years it has been used rather extensively in Canada , particularly in the gold mines , where it was first developed and where the major advances in the technique as applied to present - day mining problems have been made . At present , 40 mines in Canada and the United States are using the method in one form or another , and from all indications its use will increase in the future . In two California mines , blast -hole diamond drilling is now used for a part of or for all stoping operations , and in one of these it is used to some extent in development work . At the Mountain Copper Co.'s Hornet mine in Shasta County, about 50 percent of the pyritic sulfide ore produced is mined by the blast - hole method , and the U. S. Vanadium Corp. mines 80 percent of the ore produced at its Pine Creek tungsten mine in Inyo County by this method . At Pine Creek , long -hole drilling and blasting is used for mining pillars also , and in pre - stoping development . The blast -hole diamond - drilling method is not applicable to all types of ore bodies . A third property in California , the El Dorado Limestone Company , El Dorado County, tried the method for several months in 1943 and 1944 , but , owing to certain factors that greatly increased mining cost , the company soon returned to conventional mining methods .

Preliminary Bureau of Mines studies of mafic igneous rocks collected from the Rabbit Creek area, northwestern Alaska, indicated concentrations of platinum (412 to 1,406 ppb) and palladium (343 to 892 ppb) in five of eight samples analyzed. The samples represent boulders and cobbles of mafic/ultramafic rocks from this locality. They are not from outcrop. Petrologically, (on the hand specimen scale) the samples are crudely to well-layered and are troctolitic ± gabbroie in character, with primary igneous mafic minerals strongly altered. Small patches of interstitial sulfide minerals, including chalcopyrite, bornite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and covellite are associated with these altered zones and elsewhere through the specimens. Copper values ranged from 0.1 to 0.3 pct in samples analyzed semiquantitatively; nickel, cobalt, and chromium contents are low. Chemical, mine alogic, and petrographic relationships suggest that the rocks of similar character outcropping in northwestern Alaska could also be considered as prospective for- concentrations or platinum, palladium, and copper.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a study to determine the effects of selected, state-of-the-art emission control technologies on the ambient concentrations of particulate matter and gases emitted by underground diesel-powered mining equipment. Tests were conducted in an isolated zone of an underground mine to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative fuel formulations, namely, water-fuel emulsions, blended biodiesel fuels, ultralow sulfur diesel fuel, and #1 diesel; and selected exhaust after treatment devices, namely, diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs), diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems, and filtration systems designed around high-temperature disposable filter elements. The results showed that using a cold-weather and warm-weather water-fuel emulsion formulation reduced mass concentrations of elemental carbon (EC) by about 70% and 85%, respectively. The 20% and 50% soy biodiesel blends reduced EC by 49% and 66%, respectively. The reductions were slightly less pronounced for the 20% and 50% yellow grease biodiesel blends—33% and 56%, respectively. EC concentrations were unaffected by using ultralow sulfur diesel in place of #1 diesel. Use of the reformulated fuels did not substantially alter the concentrations of nitric oxide and carbon monoxide. However, a measurable increase in the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) peak concentration was observed during the biodiesel tests. The ArvinMeritor (AM) fuel-burner DPF system with a palladium-catalyzed DOC reduced EC concentrations by 92%. The diesel filter elements from Donaldson Co., Inc., and Filter Service & Testing Corp. reduced the EC concentration of the mine air by 92% and 70%, respectively. When the palladium-based DOC was used with the AM DPF, it raised the average and peak downstream NO2 concentrations by a factor of three. Tests of the AM DPF system with a platinum-catalyzed DOC and CAP/ETG catalytic particulate oxidizer system had to be terminated because the elevated NO2 concentrations threatened to overexpose the operator. The tests with only a selected DOC also resulted in increased NO2 concentrations in mine air.

[The legislation in many States against the present method of producing carbon-black by the incomplete combustion of natural gas, and the continually increasing demand for gas for otter purposes, indicates that the supply of carbon-black may Gradually be decreased and that new methods for its production, utilizing a greater parentage of the carbon in the has should be developed. In the course of investigations of the effects on hydrocarbons of high voltage discharges, it was noted that under certain conditions natural gas could be decomposed and that carbon-black could be produced. The effects of several tyres of electrical discharges on natural gas have, accordingly, been studied' in order to find out the fundamental factors underlying the reactions and their possible influence in the recovery of a greater part of the carbon content of natural gas than is now possible. Present commercial plants using natural gas for the manufacture of carbon-black recover from 0.9 to 1.5 pounds of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gala consumed, or less than 5 per cent of the total Gabon in the gas: It should be noted, however, that the, present methods involve heating the gas to incandescense by burning it as a luminous flame, and a considerable part of the gas is thus consumed as a source of hest. If this heat can be supplied from some other source, or if a more efficient method of applying the energy con. tamed in part of the gas, to the decomposition of the rest of it, can be worked out, then a greater yield of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gas care be expected. The present abort paper contains a brief summary of tie investigations so far conducted upon natural gas.]

"Investigations of the infrared spectra of crystalline and amorphous silica particles of different sizes (0.05, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 260 um) in the range of 400-4000 cm-1 using Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy we reported. The change in the intensity I of the signal with porosity e of powders follows the e/(1 - e) dependence for strong bands and e dependence for weaker bands as pre¬dicted by the theory of McGovern of al. For strong bands, I also follows the empirical relation I ~ D-n, where D Is the particle diameter in cm and n = 0.34-0.42. The anomalous positive frequency dependence of I on the modulation fre¬quency f observed for the stronger bands in the 45-pm and 260-pm particles Is believed to result from saturation. Some observations on the effect of changing the background from (carbon black) powder to pellet are also made.INTRODUCTIONSince the publication of the Rosencwaig—Gersho (RG) theory on the photoacoustic effect in solids (1, 2), Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR/PAS) has become an important technique for obtaining the IR spectra of surfaces and materials in their natural state (1-12). In the one-dimensional RG theory, the incident radiation, modulated at frequency f, is absorbed by the material to a depth pp = 1/B (B = absorption coefficient), thus setting up temperature variations in the material. These variations heat the adjacent gas/solid interface leading to the pressure fluctuations of the gas above the sample, which in turn is detected by microphone as a PA signal. The thermal wave originating from no deeper than the thermal diffusion length(2k/npcf) 1/2 in the material contributes to the PA signal (here k, p, and c are respectively the thermal conductivity, density, and specific heat of the material). Since u2, can be varied by varying the experimental parameter f, depth pro¬filing by PAS is possible and a number of papers on this subject have appeared in recent years (2-10). Another im¬portant phenomenon is saturation which occurs when the material thickness 1> u> us (1-12).The original promise of PAS for use with powder samples, without the need to ""prepare"" samples as in FTIR spectros-copy, has not yet been fully realized because of several com¬plications. Theoretical works by Monchalin et al. (13) and McGovern et al (14) showed that the interstial gas in the voids of the powders can act as amplifier and that, for the same mass, a finer powder is expected to yield higher PA signal than a coarser powder. Although in a number of earlier studies (15-21) an increase of PA signal with decreasing particle size has been observed, a quantitative check on the equations developed by McGovern et al. (14) has not yet been made. It is necessary to understand the particle size effects in PAS if the promise of PAS for IR spectroscopy of powders is to be realized. In this paper, we report results of a detailed study on the PAS of silica powders for the particle size range of 0.05-260 um and compare the results with theory (14). We have also investigated the frequency dependence of the variousIR modes in these powders and show that the saturation phenomenon affects at least some of the observations. Some observations on the effects of pellet vs powder background are also reported (22-24). Details of these findings are presented and discussed in this paper."

"The Avon mica district of Latah County, Idaho, is situated on a heavily forested spur of the Thatuna Range at an average altitude of 4,000 feet. The nearest rail connection is at Avon, a small farming settlement 7 miles to the south. The main supply point is Moscow, Idaho, which is 35 miles by graveled and graded county roads from Avon.Discovery of mica-bearing pegmatites in 1885 was followed in 1888 by exploitation of several outcrop deposits. Although factual data are unavailable, past production appears to have been well in excess of $100,000. Recent production (September 191 to April 1945) amounted to 65,824.78 pounds of trimmed sheet mica and 33,294.17 pounds of punch mica having a total gross value of $434,298.The several properties of the district are variously owned by estates, individuals, and the State. When active, all wore under lease or sublease to individual operators.The deposits are in an area of pre-Cambrian schists adjacent to a small granitic outlier of the Idaho batholith. The pegmatites are nearly concordant in dip and strike to the foliation of the enclosing schists. The more persistent bodies are usually tabular, lenticular, or pegmatite. Individual dikes range in length from 10 feet or less to 300 feet.The recoverable crude mica content of the pegmatites ranges downward from a maximum of 115 pounds per ton of pegmatite mined. Material discarded in rifting and trimming operations further reduces recovery to a maximum of 5 pounds per ton -of pegmatite mined. The average recoverable sheet content of the 'recently operated .deposit is estimated at 2 pounds per ton of pegmatite -mined. Available data indicate that about 21 percent of the district's recent production of trimmed sheet mica has been ""Group A"" material suitable for exacting condenser requirements. A few of the dikes contain local concentrations of beryl.Reserves of the three known major deposits of the district are estimated at about 600 to 1,000 tons of combined ""indicated"" and ""inferred"" crude block mica. One of these deposits is inferred to contain between 150 and 450 tons of beryl.It is believed that those mica reserves are minable only under a cost-market price ratio similar to that established during 1943 and 1944. A small part of the reserves can be ""high-graded"" under the present price structure. Profitable recovery of the beryl would require a market price four to five times that paid in 1944.Preliminary examination of the Avon mica district was made by the Bureau of Mines in the summer and fall of 1942. A study of the Muscovite mine and a brief reconnaissance of the surrounding district led the Bureau to recommend that the district be explored by angle-dozer trenching."

The Bureau of Mines evaluated two drill-hole probes for the delineation of Missouri lead ores. The battery-powered, portable instruments, weighing less than 30 pounds, were designed for logging holes of 1.8 inches in diameter or larger. These probes have dual scintillation detectors, balanced filters with a pass band for lead Ka radiation, and a cobalt-57 source of radiation. The results of field tests in Missouri confirm laboratory tests indicating that probe response can be correlated to lead ore grade using counting times of 10 seconds or less at any selected depth in the hole.

The success of any project in which gas is injected into oil-producing sands to increase the current rate or the economic ultimate production of oil or in which surplus gas from oil-producing operations is stored temporarily in reservoir sands that have been wholly or partly depleted of their producible oil depends mainly upon an understanding of the underground movements of oil, water, and injected gas and the ability to control their speed and direction of migration through the reservoir sends. Many operators believe that injected gas always travels up the structure and drives oil to wells structurally higher than the injection wells, because the specific gravity of the injected gas is less than that of the fluid substances in the formation. Consequently, many injection wells are located on the flanks of oil-bearing structures with the idea of utilizing the energy of the injected gas to drive the oil to producing wells higher on the structure. It is true, under certain conditions of pressure and fluid depletion of the reservoir sands that injected gas will move in an up-structure direction, but the theory that injected gas always moves up the structure is based on an erroneous conception of the laws that pertain to the expansion of gases. By definition, "a gas is distinguished by its property of infinite expansion and is limited in volume only by the walls of the vessel which contains it." The expansion of gas that is injected into reservoir sands also is limited by "walls" that surround the space influenced by the injected gas. The walls of the majority of undrilled or virgin oil-bearing reservoirs in California are the impervious shales overlying and underlying the productive strata and the "dams" or effective barriers of edge water around the rims of the reservoirs. When gas is injected into the sands of a producing reservoir, regardless of the location of the injection well on the structure or the degree of depletion of oil from the sands, one of the walls which confine the gas in the structure about the injection well is fluid. This wall will be edge water in a nearly depleted reservoir, where the drainage cones or regions of reduced pressure about injection and producing wells intersect; and, where there is no interference of drainage cones and the injection well is structurally above the edge water, the wall will be oil. In some producing reservoirs bottom water may be the lower wall of the space that confines the gas about injection wells, but the effect of bottom water on limiting the expansion of gas is the same as if the water was not present and impervious formation separated the producing from the underlying nonproducing strata. Therefore, since compressed gas always seeks regions of reduced pressure and its final volume is limited only by formation and fluid barriers and since the force exerted by the gas under pressure is equal in all directions, the course of migration of injected gas in reservoir sands in California and the effect of the gas pressure on fluid movement does not depend necessarily upon the up-structure location of low-pressure regions.

This report describes a computer-based model for estimating the tangible costs of injuries and deaths from work-related accidents in underground coal mines. The study undertook to identify and quantify the elements of accident costs, including field visits to coal mines, insurance carriers, and public agencies. The mathematical models developed for each tangible element of accident cost are presented in Volume I -of the report. A listing of the computer programs which comprise the model and instructions for using the programs are presented in Volume II. Statistical distributions of mining family characteristics, data on 95 miners killed in underground accidents, and other basic data used to develop the model are presented in Volume III. Application of the model to a data base of 9,286 accidents which occured in underground bituminous coal mines during 1974 yielded a total of $56,900,000 in tangible costs to industry, mining families, and public agencies. Loss of income to the families of miners injured or killed in these accidents accounted for 47 percent of the total.
