Slope failure accidents were responsible for about 12% of U.S. surface mine fatalities between 1995 and 2003. Small surface movements on a mine highwall may be precursors of failure that, if detected, could provide sufficient warning to enable workers and machinery to be withdrawn to safety. Radar interferometry offers the necessary precision to detect these movements. Radar has some advantages over other methods in its ability to cover large surface areas for true two-dimensional monitoring day and night under almost any weather condition. Radar’s active transmit/receive mode of operation provides for more direct sampling than do passive optical methods that depend on solar illumination. Improvements in microprocessor speeds and capacities have led to the development of a number of small, portable, ground-based systems; such systems are now being deployed at several locations around the world. As part of an ongoing study of monitoring technologies, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Brigham Young University, Provo, UT, cooperated to assess the feasibility of using interferometric radar to monitor mine slope stability. Field tests of a device incorporating prototype equipment were successful in that small, centimeter-scale displacements on rock slopes were detected.

"INTRODUCTION The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines has used the wagon drill to sample mineral deposits in New Mexico. This method of sampling was successful and con¬stituted an important phase of the work on five exploratory projects undertaken in 1943, 1944, and 1945. The deposits varied in topographic features, geology, mineral content, and in the physical characteristics of the rocks drilled. The altitudes ranged from 630 to 7,800 feet. Three hundred and seventeen holes totaling 6,852 feet were drilled. The deepest hole was 66 feet; the average depth was a little less than 22 feet.The results of the above-mentioned work form the basis of this report. Special attention is given to the later and more improved techniques used. This report was written with the expectation that the procedures might prove advantageous to others in the exploration and sampling of near-surface mineral de¬posits, and that a more extended use of the technique might result.AcknowledgmentsAcknowledgment is due Charles H. The Bureau of Mines is in the process of degasifying a virgin area in northern West Virginia from the base of an 839-foot -deep vertical borehole. An in situ gas pressure hole 199 feet long, and seven degasification holes ranging in depth from 500 to 850 feet (average 618 feet) were drilled in an 8-foot-thick virgin Pittsburgh coalbed from the enlarged (14-foot-diameter) bottom of this borehole. The in situ pressure at the back end of the hole and the range of gas and water flows from degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psi, 79,000 to 257,000 cfd (average 160,000 cfd), and 5 to 8 gpm per hole (average 6.8 gpm), respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual water traps to a common collector for natural venting of the gas through pipes to the atmosphere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respectively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psi. Eighty days later the corresponding values dropped to 529,000 cfd, 0.50 gpm, and 13 psi. After 180 days of degasification, 91 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the affected virgin area. This represents 60 to 70 percent of the gas calculated to be contained in the area of coal affected by the holes.

Areal distributions for ash, total sulfur, and sulfur forms were developed for the top 12 inches, the middle section, the bottom 8 inches, and the total seam of Pittsburgh coal in southwestern Pennsylvania. The sulfur and ash exhibit an apparent high local variability. As a general rule, both the sulfur and ash show high concentrations in the top 12 inches and in the bottom 8 inches of the seam relative to the concentrations observed in the middle section of the seam. The high-low sulfur and ash concentrations in the top 12 inches of the seam are not coincident with the high-low sulfur and ash concentrations in either the middle section or the bottom 8 inches of the seam. With respect to sulfur and ash, it is suggested that the top and bottom sections of the Pittsburgh coal may reflect both a syngenetic and epigenetic origin. Present data support the belief that paleotopography controlled Pittsburgh seam deposition. Evidence is presented to show that channels were cut at various times into the semilithified sediments that buried the Pittsburgh seam. In this channeling process, portions of the Pittsburgh coal may have been eroded away. Following channel development, the lower part of the Pittsburgh sandstone filled the complex system of braided channels to produce the "want areas" encountered in present mining operations. In localized areas of the Pittsburgh seam, impingement of Pittsburgh sandstone may be responsible for the lateral displacement of the coal. Information of this type becomes important in the assessment of exploration data, in the development of a quality control system for mine output, and in mine life planning.

High-purity lanthanum metal was prepared by electrolysis of La003 in a LaF3-LiF-BaF2 bath at 950° C. The requisite bath temperature for the deposition of molten metal was maintained by supplying the heat as current directly to the electrodes. A current efficiency of about 60 percent was obtained. The lanthanum nodules contained carbon and oxygen as major impurities. The total impurity content was from about 0.1 to 0.2 percent.

Water spray characteristics, including droplet size and velocity, airborne dust capture potential, and induced airflow quantity for various spray nozzle designs were evaluated to provide basic information for improving spray applications. Water droplet size and velocity characteristics were initially measured by a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, and air atomized spray nozzles at similar operating parameters. Airflow inducement and dust capture experiments were also conducted under the same operating parameters to examine any salient features of the spray nozzle type, droplet characteristics, induced airflow, and airborne dust capture. Test results indicate that there are trade offs between airflow inducement and dust capture efficiency. A spray nozzle with a wider discharge angle was observed to induce more airflow, but at reduced dust capture efficiencies. Increasing spray nozzle fluid pressure(s) generally reduced water droplet sizes with concurrent increases in droplet velocity, airflow inducement, and airborne dust capture. Placing a three-sided barrier around the spray nozzles normally reduced spray air induction and increased dust capture efficiency. A direct relationship between airborne dust capture efficiency and spray input power normalized per unit of airflow induced was ob- served. This information can be utilized to improve the performance of water sprays for reducing airborne dust levels.

"INTRODUCTION This report is another of the series on the effect of drouth and low water on the pollution of streams by coalmine drainage. A previous report3 dealt with work on Bennett Branch of Sinnanahoning Creek, Pa. This report deals with the results obtained during a similar study of Black Lick Creek, Two Lick Creek, and Yellow Creek. All of these belong to the same drainage system. Two Lick Creek is a tributary to Black Lick Creek, and in turn Yellow Creek is a tributary to Two Lick Creek, as shown in Figure 1.Black Lick Creek was of such a volume that a seasonal investigation was not entirely feasible. Yellow Creek was found to have mines only near the mouth, except a few of status unknown to the writer at the extreme head-waters, and the stream was also more or less inaccessible for regular and frequent sampling. McCrone Associates, Incorporated has examined 71 samples of airborne mine dusts using the techniques of x-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis and light microscopy. This report details the procedures which were used in this work and documents the results which were obtained.

"Results from a study directed towards identifying and measuring the mutagenicity of diesel exhaust particulate matter involved in mining exposures, especially those which may synergistically affect genotoxic hazard, are presented in this paper. Particulate matter emissions from a diesel engine, representative of the ones found in underground mines, were sampled and assayed to determine the genotoxic potential as a function of engine operating conditions. Diesel exhaust was diluted in a multi-tube mini-dilution tunnel and the particulate matter was collected on 70 mm fluorocarbon coated glass fiber filters as well as on 8"" x 10"" hi-volume filters. A six mode steady state duty cycle was used to relate engine operating conditions to the mutagenicity potential.Protocols developed for using a primary component of pulmonary surfactant as a medium for collecting and applying respirable particulate material to cells for mutagenicity testing offer a true representation of in-vivo delivery of such respired aerosols to pulmonary cells and the genetic material within . The surfactant dispersion technique is discussed in this paper. Methods have been developed to sample and assay the diesel soot and diesel soot/mineral dust complexes which would not compromise the surface and physical properties of the particulate material."

The internal friction of eight single crystals of magnesium with orienta-tion ranging from 10° to 84° was measured at 33.5 kc and 272° C, and the results were interpreted in terms of the pinned-dislocation model proposed by Granato and Lucke. Results show that the strain-amplitude-dependent decrement varies with orientation in a manner predictable by the G-L model. Different values of strain-amplitude-independent decrement were observed at different orientation angles, but correlation with the theory was not conclusive. Problems and steps for further study are discussed.

"This study analyzed laboratory comminution techniques for respirable mine dust generation and the properties of the resulting dusts. It was the objective of the study to determine the suitability of the resulting dusts in reflecting the properties of natural airborne dust. This paper deals specifically with the amount of contamination introduced into the generated dust as a result of abrasion when using nine different grinding methods. The analysis was made by comparing the content of 25 chemical elements in the lab-generated dusts with the same elements in the airborne coal mine dusts. It was found that all the lab-generated dusts possessed contamination but that several methods produced smaller percentages of contamination and that the residence time in the grinding device was an important factor in the contamination levels. INTRODUCTIONDust in the atmosphere is a health hazard and a major source of occupational diseases in the coal mining industry (Anon., 1980; Merchant, Boehlecke, and Picket-Hamer, 1986). It has been shown that coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is directly related to the inhalation and accumulation of respirable coal dust in coal miners' lungs. In order to effectively protect coal workers from coal dusts, we must have a clear understanding of dust properties including dust generation and dust-lung reaction mechanisms. This requires extensive biomedical research. Dust related research often requires large samples of respirable coal dusts to be collected, either for repeated experiments or stored for future reference. Unfortunately, current sampling instruments are not able to meet this demand. Ali a result, laboratory-generated coal dust ls frequently used as a substitute for coal mine dust in biomedical and other research applications. Now, the questions are how close the characteristics of laboratory-generated dusts are to those of mining-generated dusts and which equipment is moat appropriate for research dust production in the laboratory . These are some of the interests of this research project. The primary objective of this project was to find a laboratory technique which can generate coal dusts possessing properties similar to coal mine dust with respect to particle size distribution, chemical composition, and particle shape and morphology. However, this paper will focus only on the chemical compositions of the prepared dust samples and try to identify the sources of chemical contamination from various size reduction processes."

Diesel exhaust from a caterpillar 3304 diesel engine, representative of the ones found in underground mines, rated 100 hp at 2200 rpm is diluted in a multi-tube mini-dilution tunnel and the particulate matter is collected on 70 mm fluorocarbon coated glass fiber filters as well as on S"" x 10"" hi-volume filters. A six mode steady state duty cycle was used to relate engine operating conditions to the genotoxic potential. Results to-date on diesel exhaust have indicated that use of a primary component of pulmonary surfactant as a medium for collecting and applying respirable particulate material to cells for mutagenicity testing offers a true representation of in-vivo delivery of such respired aerosols to pulmonary cells and the genetic material within. The results are comparable to the standard solvent extraction procedure. INTRODUCTIONDiesel engines are primarily associated with transportation; however, they are also very common in the work place. Of particular concern is the use of diesel engines in mining operations. Currently there are 1,950 diesel machines working in underground coal mines throughout the country. These units are used in 151 mines encompassing nine different states (MSHA, 1991). It is believed the use of diesel powered equipment has contributed to higher productivity in these mines. However, the exhaust from diesel engines operated in underground mines has been a subject of concern during the past decade because of its suspected relationship with health aspects. The particulate matter generated by the diesel engine is of particular concern."

The Bureau of Mines identified and evaluated major sources of quartz dust during overburden drilling at a surface coal mine, The relative contribution of each source to the total dust hazard was estimated, using personal gravimetric and instantaneous dust-sampling devices. No attempt was made to determine actual dust generation rates. The major sources of dust at the drill rig during dry drilling opera-tions were the collector dump, drill shroud leakage, and drill stem seal leakage, These sources contributed 90 pct of the respirable dust and 89 pet of the respirable quartz dust generated during drilling, The collector dump cycle (21.6 pct of total drilling time) accounted for 38 pct of the respirable dust and 41 pct of the respirable quartz dust, with peak dust concentrations reaching 68 mg/m3. Shroud and drill stem leakage contributed 28 and 24 pct of the respirable dust and 32 and 16 pct of the respirable quartz dust, respectively. A dragline and second drill rig contributed the remaining 10 pct of dust and 11 pct of quartz dust. Gravimetric dust samples collected inside the drill cab and outside, near the cab door, averaged 1.65 and 1.43 mg/m3, respectively, with 6 pct respirable quartz.

The estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1990 exceeded $1,501.5 billion in terms of current (1990) dollars, or almost $1,160 billion in terms of constant 1983 dollars. This latter figure was 0.3% below the 1989 level and about 3.9% below the record high to date of $1,207.1 billion 1983 dollars set in 1980. Table 1 provides the latest available revised time series of the estimated value of world crude mineral production both in terms of 1983 constant dollars and in terms of current dollars. It also provides one of the two statistical bases for this estimation, this being the data on the value of production of a group of key commodities that was compiled for and published in the authoritative French language mineral industry periodical, Annales des Mines, for selected years up to 1983.1 It should be stressed that the values just discussed and those presented in the tabulation are for crude minerals only, and by no means reflect adequately the role of the entire mineral industry in the world economy. These figures represent only the value of mineral materials as they are mined or otherwise extracted from the earth. They do not reflect the value added to these materials through downstream processing within the facilities commonly accepted as mineral industry plants. That is, value added through beneficiation of ores, smelting, refining, and similar processing is not included in these figures. Comprehensive world data on the value added by such processing are not available; however, a conservative estimate of the total value of pro-cessed output from mineral industry plants derived wholly from primary (newly mined) materials would be on the order of about $2,780 billion constant 1983 dollars or $3,600 billion in terms of 1990 dollars.

The Bureau of Mines has been promoting health and safety in mining since its establishment in 1910. One area of research covers methane control in coalbeds; this report describes a multipurpose borehole used for both degasification and the production of commercial-quality gas. The multipurpose borehole was drilled into a barrier pillar, and seven horizontal degasification holes and one pressure point hole were drilled radially out from its perimeter. On January 28, 1974, after 505 days of degasification, a compressor was installed to the exhaust stack of the multipurpose borehole (1), and pipeline--quality gas was introduced into a commercial pipe-line. As of February 4, 1975, over 171 million cubic feet of gas had been purchased by the gas company. The in situ pressure at a depth of 200 feet into the coalbed and the average gas flow and water flow from the degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psig, 1,200,000 cfd, and 6.8 gpm, respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual pipes to the atmosphere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respectively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psig. Five hundred days later, the corresponding values were 620,000 cfd, 0.15 gpm, and 10.5 psig. Daily flows have been as high as 800,000 cfd, and as low as 360,000 cfd, during the last 500 days. On February 4, 1975, after 882 days of degasification, 576 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the Pittsburgh coalbed; apparently a much larger area of virgin coal is being degasified than is defined by the holes. This study indicates that horizontal boreholes drilled into a coalbed from the bottom of any shaft will effectively remove gas from the Pittsburgh coalbed,

[This is the third report related to fundamental retail roof-bolting research in underground mines (1, 2)3/ and describes an investigation of the torque-load relationship for 3/ -inch, expansion-type mine roof bolts. In a previous investigation the relationship between torque and bolt load was established for 1-inch slotted-type bolts (1). The two types of bolts differ in diameter and method of tightening and consequently may exhibit different torque-load behavior. The 1-inch bolt is tightened by turning the nut, the 3/4-inch bolt by rotating the beaded bolt itself. Experience indicates that roof bolts should be tightened to moors satisfactory anchorage sand to minimise nag of tie roof over the mine opening. The generally accepted means for determining the bolt load is to see a torque wrench to measure he torque applied in tightening the bolt and, from a predetermined relationship between torque and molt load, to, determine the corresponding bolt load. Because frictional effects may vary between one type of shell assembly or bolt and others, 7 types of expansion shell units and 3 types of 3/4-inch-diameter, mild steel bolts were tested.]

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the domestic primary and secondary lead smelting and refining industries to determine the economic impacts of existing and proposed environmental, health, and safety regulations. The impacts are assessed in terms of capital and operating costs for existing and alternative smelting/ refining technologies. Industry response to regulatory implementation is estimated and quantified in terms of import value from lost lead production. For the primary lead industry, regulatory compliance may add up to 1.15 ¢/lb refined lead to operating cost for rehabilitated plants. Alternative smelting/refining methods could reduce net operating costs by as much as 4.36 ¢/lb refined lead. Capital expenditures would vary from $750 to $1,000 per annual mt of smelter capacity. Secondary lead smelter operating costs would increase about 3.8 ¢/lb refined lead to comply with existing regulations. Capital expenditures would average about $124 per annual mt of smelter capacity. Implementation and enforcement of proposed regulations would result in closure of the primary lead industry and additional expenditures for compliance by the secondary lead industry. Enforcement of the most extreme proposed regulations would force the secondary lead industry to close.

The Bureau of Mines conducted one of the most extensive studies on surface mine illumination to date, to assess the illumination needs of mobile surface mining machinery with respect to the visual tasks required of machinery operators. Field Investigations were performed at 22 surface mining operations, coal and metal-nonmetal, within several mining regions of the United States. Visibility and illumination were measured for 159 visual tasks performed by equipment operators on or near 57 surface mining machines, including draglines, shovels, blasthole drills, bulldozers, loaders, haul trucks, graders, scrapers, and several service-type vehicles.
