The Pebble deposit contains three contiguous zones. In the Pebble West zone, granodiorite stocks intrude gently warped volcanosedimentary rocks that had been intruded by diorite sills and two felsic intrusion breccias. In the Central zone, volcanosedimentary rocks are cut by diorite and granodiorite sills; the latter are genetically associated with the granodiorite stocks. In these zones, widespread potassic alteration consists of brown biotite and K-feldspar, with abundant quartz-carbonate-sulphide vein stockworks. Chalcopyrite/pyrite ratios range from 2/1 to 1/20. Diorite hosts the highest-grade mineralization, with much of it being disseminated. Patchy, later phyllic alteration is moderate and commonly depleted in copper. The Pebble East zone occupies a granodiorite stock and intruded host rocks below an eastwardly thickening wedge of barren Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary rocks up to 600 m thick. Brown biotite alteration and copper mineralization are strong, with chalcopyrite/pyrite ratios commonly over 1/1. The zone extends to a depth of at least 1200 m below surface; some drill holes bottomed in strong mineralization. Later, weak to moderate sericitic alteration removed some chalcopyrite and locally remobilized gold. The Pebble deposit has a Measured/Indicated resource of 3 billion tonnes grading 0.28% Cu, 0.32 g/t Au and 0.015% Mo (= 0.5% copper-equivalent) and an Inferred resource of 1.13 billion tonnes grading 0.30 g/t Au, 0.27% Cu and 0.015% Mo (0.55% copper-equivalent). The Pebble East zone has an Inferred resource of 2.13 billion tonnes grading 0.55% Cu, 0.34 g/t Au, and 0.037% Mo (0.97% copper-equivalent). The Pebble East zone is open to the east and to a lesser extent to the north, south, and to depth.

"The Central Mukur deposit was discovered by the Semipalatinsk Geological Exploration Expedition (GEE) during detailed searches from 1977 to 1980. Andas Altyn Ltd., a Kazakhstanian gold mining company acquired the property and commenced mining in 1995. In 1998, Andas-Altyn Ltd. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corporation.The Central Mukur gold project covers a linear series of parallel, discontinuous zones of near surface oxide gold mineralization that covers a distance of 7 kilometers and extends past the property boundaries. The oxide gold mineralization is a result of the regional oxidization of a primary sulfide gold mineralization emplaced in a series of shallow dipping thrust faults. Resources as calculated by the GEE are 3.45 mt at an average grade of 1.84 gmt Au in the C1 +C2 category and 7.52 mt at an average grade of 1.80 gmt Au in the P1 category. The Central Mukur Gold Heap Leach Mine consists of an open pit, heap leach pads, and an ion exchange resin gold recovery plant. Limited gold production (<2,500 ounces/year) has been achieved over the past three years leaching run of mine oxide gold mineralization. Gold recovery utiling cyanide to dissolve the Au and ionic resin technology to recover the Au for the leachate is approximately 60%. Loaded resin is shipped to a treatment plant at Almaty where the gold is stripped from the resin, refined and sold.This paper will describe the geology, mining, and processing of the Central Mukur ore. In addition, it will describe what it is like doing business in Kazakhstan and the transition from a Soviet style operation to a more western style operation.INTRODUCTIONThe Central Mukur Mine is owned and operated by Andas-Altyn Ltd. a Kazakhstanian gold mining company located in northeast Kazakhstan. Andas-Altyn is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corp., a Canadian public company listed on the Alberta Stock Exchange. The Central Mukur mine consists of a small open pit, and a heap leach operation that utilizes ion exchange resin to recover gold from pregnant solutions. In addition to the Central Mukur mine, Eurasia also owns the Myaly heap leach gold project which is also operated by Andas- Altyn Ltd."

Barre granite?s samples have been tested for fracture toughness under mode I along two different directions with respect to microstructural fabrics were investigated. 3D objects counter algorithm technique is applied on micro CT images to identify physical properties such as crack induced porosity, crack density, generated total surface area and contribution of individual mineral grains within the damaged zone.The result obtained justifies very well the fracture toughness anisotropy in Barre granite, and explains the difference in the structure of the damage zone evolving as a result of test crack interacting with pre-existing microstructural fabrics. The present study has potential application in the fields of rock mass stability, oil reservoir stimulation, rock fragmentation and damage in blasting and emplacement of dykes.

"Geostatistical conditional simulations are becoming increasingly popular as tools that provide models of uncertainty at different stages of a mining project. They have been used as grade control tools in daily operations to assess the uncertainty of mineable reserves at the project’s feasibility stage, and to assess mineralization potential in certain settings. Other applications include assessment of recoverable reserves, resource and reserve classification, and drill hole spacing optimization studies. All large-scale applications of conditional simulations intend to benefit from the correct (or accurate) characterization of uncertainty, adequately describing the variability observed from the data and its effect on the final objective.The objective of this paper is to compare the ad-hoc uncertainty model provided by a traditional classification scheme with the probability intervals resulting from a conditional simulation model. It is argued that the uncertainty model derived from the use of classification schemes is of little practical use to the mining company or operation. The paper emphasizes differences in uncertainty based on the size of the mining unit considered, the extraction method, and local geological differences. Most importantly, it discusses confidence intervals for these mining units, as compared to the relative precision envisioned by a typical classification scheme.The application described in this paper is taken from a medium-sized Cu open pit and underground mine in northern Chile, and demonstrates the impact of several variables on the resulting conditional simulation models. It also compares a more traditional resource classification scheme applied, and the wide difference in local confidence intervals for each mining unit."

IntroductionThe copper price traded in the London Metal Exchange is a relevant parameter for defining macroeconomic policies of producing countries like Chile. It is also a key factor for the mining companies, since fluctuations in the sell price affect the expected financial flows. Due to the amount of money involved in decision-making, it is necessary to have accurate forecasts of the future copper prices and to quantify the uncertainty associated with such prices.This paper focuses on the annual copper price estimation in the short and medium terms, i.e., from one to five years into the future. Henceforth, the word “estimation” will be used as a synonym of “forecast,” according to the geostatistical jargon (Matheron, 1989).Two main approaches, based either on statistics or econometrics, are currently used to forecast commodity prices, but both of them are not very accurate when applied to copper. First, the main methods are briefly reviewed, then the geostatistical formalism will be presented. So far, the latter approach hardly has been used to estimate commodity prices, although it may reconcile both statistics and econometrics via (1) the use of a stochastic approach and (2) the handling of ancillary variables related to the copper market. Another advantage of geostatistical techniques is the ability not only to forecast the copper price, but also to measure the uncertainty associated with it."

"The Anomaly A area of the Clarence Stream gold deposits in southwestern New Brunswick contains mineralized structures that bear geometrical relationships to regional folding events. The four mineralized zones of Anomaly A (AD, MW, 93, and Murphy) are hosted by turbiditic graywacke, quartzose wacke, siltstone, and argillite sequences of the Kendall Mountain Formation. A regional scale structural analysis reflects at least four deformational events, three of which appear to control the folded geometry of Anomaly A (D2, D3, and D4). F2 and F3 folds are coaxial and are refolded into a dome and basin geometry by F4 folds. The mineralized zones are subparallel to axial surfaces of F2 folds. Structural analysis of a mineralized zone exposed at surface indicates that gold mineralization is hosted by a quartz-vein system that comprises veins generated during both D2 and D3. Threedimensional representations of Anomaly A created using drill-core data and ®GoCAD suggest that the quartz-vein system was emplaced in fault structures during D2 as well as within brecciated dilation zones during D3. Three of the four zones that make up Anomaly A have F2 hinge surfaces that can be linked through a geometry compatible with the style of F3 and F4 folds. The apparent continuity of these three zones indicates the potential for kilometer-scale mineralized structures at Anomaly A. "The Pulp Chemistry Monitor (PCM) has been installed and operated in a number of concentrators in Australasia, and has produced some very interesting results. PCM measures the pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, temperature and oxygen demand of process streams within a concentrator continuously and in real time.In the example presented in the paper the cleaner feed pulp chemistry is measured, and related back to changes in the mineralogy as well as variations in metallurgical response. For example, a decrease in Eh and dissolved oxygen as well as an increase in the oxygen demand. These changes in the pulp chemistry appear to coincide with increases in the feed grades, probably higher pyrite grades. Further, these variations in pulp chemistry and feed mineralogy have a negative impact on the concentrate grade and recovery.The implication is that if the pulp chemistry is monitored it is possible to predict changes in the mineralogy of the system, and from this the metallurgical response. Further, the changes in pulp chemistry can be used in a control system to counter the changes in mineralogy and maintain the metallurgy.IntroductionIt has long been recognized at a fundamental level that the flotation behaviour of sulphide minerals is dependent on the pH and Eh of the system (for example: Tolun and Kitchener, 1964; Woods, 1976). However, measuring pulp chemical parameters within an operating concentrator has had limited attention. Woodcock and Jones (1970a and b) were among the first to actually collect data from operating plants. Jones and Woodcock (1984) identified some of the chemical complexities of flotation pulps, and noted that most concentrators already operate at high levels of metallurgical performance but there was still considerable scope for improvement. These gains would, in part come from more effective chemical control. In the same volume, Healy (1984) discussed metal ion hydrolysis and precipitation, redox chemistry and how the surface chemistry of sulphide minerals can be influence flotation behaviour. The impact of grinding environment on the pulp chemistry and flotation response of a complex polymetallic sulphide ore is discussed by Forssberg and Subrahmanyam (1993). Their work essentially contrasts the pulp chemical and flotation performance of pulps ground with conventional ferrous grinding media to a fully autogenous system. The data suggested that the reduction or removal of iron hydrolysis contamination from the system could have a positive influence on flotation behaviour, and perhaps the first stage of “controlling” the chemistry of the system should be in the grinding circuit. Grano et al (1995) demonstrated that the collection of pulp, solution and surface chemical data could identify weaknesses within a concentrator, and from these data develop, test and implement solutions that improved the process. Greet et al (2006) showed that the pulp chemical trends observed through primary grinding and rougher flotation circuits of most sulphide flotation concentrators are approximately the same. There are differences in the magnitude of various pulp chemical parameters (pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, temperature and oxygen demand) as a result of variations in the feed mineralogy and processes employed. Further, it was noted the Eh shifted to more reducing values of the ten days measurements were collected, and this change could be traced to an increase in the iron sulphide content of the feed. Metallurgically, this resulted in an increase in nickel recovery through the recovery of nickeliferous iron sulphides, and a decrease in nickel concentrate grade."

"The Highland Uranium Project (HUP) is located approximately sixty miles northeast of Casper, Wyoming and is owned and operated by Power Resources, Inc. (PRI). With an annual production of680 tonnes (1.5 million lbs) U308, HUP is one of the largest uranium producers by in-situ leach (ISL) in the western world. Uranium is currently produced from four wellfields with a total flow rate of approximately 1,135 m3/hr (5,000 gpm). The carbonate leach solutions are processed by anion ion exchange at two satellite facilities located in close proximity to the wellfields. The loaded resin is transported by truck to a central processing facility for elution of the uranium. Uranium in the pregnant eluant is precipitated and washed prior to calcining.Wastewater from the satellite facilities is treated and used for irrigation at a Land Application Facility. The wastewater generated at the central processing facility is injected into a 2,750 m (9,000 ft) deep waste disposal well.When economical mining of the orebodies is complete, restoration of the groundwater is initiated. There are currently two wellfields at HUP undergoing ground water restoration. Phase I restoration consists of removal of the carbonate leach solution from the ore body. Phase II includes treating the withdrawn fluid with reverse osmosis and reinjection of the permeate into perimeter wells.Future plans include construction of additional satellite facilities at the Gas Hills Project and other economical deposits located within 240 km (150 mi) of HUP. The capacity of the central processing facility will be increased to 1,815 tonnes (4 million lbs) U308 per year by late 1999."

The backfilling of underground stopes is a common practice throughout the mining industry. The stresses imposed by the backfill on the surrounding rock mass need to be assessed because of their influence on ground stability and on the hydro-geochemical response of the fill material. There is, however, a complex interaction between the relatively soft backfill and the much stiffer adjacent rock mass. In recent years, the authors have presented results from investigations conducted on stress distributions (obtained numerically and analytically) in and around backfilled stopes with (sub)vertical walls. In this paper, the influence of stope inclination and of backfill properties is evaluated. Results indicate that, in general, the vertical and horizontal stresses in inclined stopes are close to, but somewhat smaller than the stresses in vertical stopes. Nonetheless, significant differences can be observed in some cases, especially for the vertical stress along the inclined central line and along the hanging wall. It is further shown that neglecting deformability in limit equilibrium analyses is an acceptable assumption. However, Poisson?s ratio and the dilatancy angle, usually neglected in limit equilibrium analyses, may have significant effect on the stress distribution. Results also confirm that the backfill strength parameters (cohesion and friction angle) are critical factors required to properly evaluate the stress distribution, at least within a certain range of parameter values.

The stability of paste fill bulkheads forms an integral part of a successful paste fill system. Bulkheads are constructed at the draw points of open stopes to contain paste fill while the initial pour cures and forms a consolidated plug. Mobilization of uncured paste fill as a result of a bulkhead failure can lead to significant consequences, including endangering the safety of personnel, property damage and production losses and delays. The loading conditions in the paste fill and the resultant lateral loads on the bulkheads are complex and are dependent on many factors. This paper presents a case study of several paste fill bulkhead failures; the results of an in-situ pressure monitoring program to ascertain the pressure loads, and the subsequent paste fill bulkhead evaluation.

"The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits allows us to isolate the circuit classification system efficiency (CSE) from the mill’s grinding performance. The factors which affect circuit CSE are reviewed, with emphasis on water usage at the classifiers. It is shown that manipulation of such water usage can be carried out to improve plant grinding circuit efficiency, at times by more than 30 percent.THE FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE EQUATIONObservation of the feed and product size distributions going into and discharging from the mill in grinding circuits with low versus high circulating load ratios initially led to the definition of “circuit classification system efficiency” (or CSE, McIvor, 1988a), and ultimately the discovery of the Functional Performance Equation (McIvor, 1988b, and McIvor et al, 1992). The CSE is the percentage of “coarse” (typically with reference to the plus P80) size material occupying the mill (versus “fines” or product size material, finer than the circuit P80), and can be calculated by taking the average of the percentage of coarse material in the mill feed and mill discharge. As this also represents the percentage of the mill energy expended on targeted, coarse size material, it is directly proportional to overall grinding circuit efficiency and production rate. This is all clearly expressed in the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits, which is derived as follows.We define “fines” as any product size material, and “coarse” as that targeted to be further ground, the two typically differentiated by the circuit target P80. For any grinding circuit, the production rate of new, product size material (fines) must equal the specific grinding rate of the coarse material (i.e. fine product generated per unit of energy applied to the coarse material) times the power applied to the coarse material."

"A shallow till sampling program was completed on a 1 km grid over the St . George Batholith in southern New Brunswick. The ""B"" soil horizon was analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Co, Mo, U and Sb and the heavy minerals from the ""C"" soil horizon were analyzed for W, Sn and A u. The results delineated four of five recorded W occurrences, three of four recorded Mo occurrences, all recorded Cu occurrences and one recorded Au occurrence. The results indicate that shallow till sampling in conjunction with bedrock and Quaternary mapping can inexpensively define exploration targets in terrain similar to that underlain by the St. George Batholith.A similar program was carried out in eastern Ontario involving the analysis of four separates from the till, the ""8"" soil horizon, the -50 mesh fraction, the -250 mesh and the heavy mineral fraction of the ""C"" soil horizon and humus. Also sampling was carried out near known gold occurrences at closer spacings. Regionally, anomalous results from all sample media clearly defined a large auriferous shear zone and associated splays. Over one known showing all media clearly defined the showing and a secondary zone. On the regional scale the heavy mineral fraction gave the best anomaly definition and contrast, but the -250 mesh fraction was found to be the most cost effective for defining exploration targets. For detailed surveys, humus was found to be cost-effective."

The fatigue behavior of AM60 high pressure die casting magnesium alloys was studied in a straincontrolled manner. The fatigue test was interrupted every 2,000 cycles for X-ray tomography scanning. The specimen was removed to be scanned on a desktop micro-CT system. The value of using X-ray tomography in a fatigue properties study was assessed with respect to porosity, cracks and fracture surfaces. The 3D analysis and model results showed porosity could be well measured and modelled in 3D. Defects bands are made of pores under 50 µm in volume-equivalent sphere diameter. Larger pores are randomly distributed in the region between two defect bands. Observation of cracks by X-ray tomography occurs in three ways such that the 3D model gives the best illustration of crack-porosity interaction while the other two methods have better detectability on crack initiation and crack tip observation. X-ray tomography is also of value in failure analysis on fracture surfaces. By summarizing X-ray tomography data during fatigue testing and observing fracture surfaces on a 3D model, a better understanding on the crack initiation, crack-porosity interaction and the morphology of fracture surface is achieved.

In 1972 about 4 million tons of ore was hoisted from eleven mines.Outokumpu Oy has gained experiences on the various aspects of on line computer control since 1968. This knowledge has been combined to develop a standard computer control package for concentrator control. Before the development of computer control package was started Outokumpu Oy had three large computer control systems. The first system was at the Pyhasalmi Concentrator, thee second at the LokkolaPlant, and the installation of the third system at the Vuonos Concentrator was just started.The characteristics of general computer software packages - both control and executive ones - were thus well-known as well as the practical usage of control theory. Furthermore Outokumpu had developed the Courier analyzer which included a so-called minicomputer. This project had given experience both 1n totally self made real tire executives and in computer hardware and peripheral d=vices. The instrumentation of the Outokumpu concentrators was designed and installed traditionally by the engineers of Outokumpu themselves."

"The McArthur River uranium deposit is the single richest uranium ore body developed in the world to date. The ore body’s average grade is 15% U3O8. Proven reserves are in excess of 450 million pounds. The grinding circuit is located underground. The ground ore is pumped to a surface facility where the slurry is thickened and loaded into containers for shipping to the Key Lake mill 78 kilometers to the south.The paper will briefly describe the mining method employed. The underground ore handling and grinding circuit, and surface facilities including slurry load out, wastewater treatment and the freeze plant will be described in detail. The paper will emphasize radiation and safety procedures that are followed to minimize operator exposure to radiation risks.LOCATIONThe McArthur River mine is located 78 kilometres north of the Key Lake mill. It is located at latitude 57’ N in northern Saskatchewan, within the southern boundary of the Athabasca formation. The nearest town is Pinehouse, located 320 kilometres to the south. Access to the mine is by an all weather road and by a private airstrip.HISTORYThe McArthur River Operation is jointly owned by Cameco Corporation (69.805%) and Cogema Resources Inc. (30.195%). Exploration for uranium in the McArthur River area started in 1980 by the Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation, a predecessor company of Cameco.In 1984, a 12-kilometre long basement conductor was identified at a depth exceeding 500 metres. Systematic exploration drilling of this conductor resulted in the discovery of the P2 North deposit. Subsequent surface drilling programs from 1989 to 1992 delineated a narrow ore zone over a strike length of 1700 meters at a depth of 500 to 600 metres. At this time, geological reserves for the deposit were estimated to be 2.4 million tonnes at a grade of 5.0% U3O8 for a uranium content of 260 million pounds U308"

"The CANMET SPOC project aims at inducing progress in process evaluation and optimization by developing user oriented software based on state-of-the-art theory. The present work is the result of a joint effort by CANMET, Noranda Mines and Université Laval to develop two computer packages: one (RTD) to calculate the residence time distribution that best describes the material transport through the mill, the other (FINDBS) to estimate the rate of breakage and distribution function of the population balance model in a ball mill. The RTD package can handle data from various experimental methods (impulse or complex tracer feed, with or without recycling, etc...). The FINDBS package provides options for the functional description oj both model parameters Band S. The full detail of the methods and programs appears in a users guide. The program capabilities and several sample runs are presented.IntroductionSimulation of mineral dressing operations by computer has been largely contained within academic and research circles and has not yet gained a status of routine practice in the ore and coal industries. It is however a matter of time before process simulators are available on every process engineer&apos;s desk to assist process optimization tasks, flowsheet design and professional training. The CANMET SPOC project (Simulated Processing of Ore and Coal) was initiated in 1980 to assist the Canadian industry in integrating computer-based methodology for process evaluation and optimization(1). Software development, documentation and transfer is one of the main priorities of the project which will mature in 1985 by releasing a complete package of manuals and programs covering sampling, material balance computation, unit modelling, flowsheet simulation and optimization . This paper is a condensed description of a typical project element in its 1982-1983 state of development. The required methodology for ball-mill modelling and simulation was consolidated an d merged to other project elements during a joint study under contract financed by CANMET and Noranda Mines Ltd . The first part of the study dealt with documenting experimental methods and software for ball-mill computer simulation. Université Laval GRAAIM (Goupe de Recherche en Automatistion Appliquée à l&apos;Industrie Minérale) acted as sub-contractor for this part of the study(16,17). "Stirred mill technology dates back to 1928 where the idea to use “an agitator and spherical grinding media” was presented. The year 1948 saw the successful application of DuPont’s “sand mill” for pigment grinding. Subsequent years have led to the development of different types of stirred mills spanning a number of industries that require fine and ultrafine grinding. In the context of the mining industry, smaller grain size and other mineralogical characteristics have motivated the need to grind finer. In order to address this need, the interest in stirred milling technologies has grown over the last 20 years as can be illustrated by the large body of literature published over this same period of time. The typical observation reported in the literature is that in certain circumstances stirred milling is significantly more efficient than ball milling. Despite these developments, the tumbling mills are continuing to be used in fine and ultrafine grinding applications. The main reason for this, as communicated at the Canadian Mineral Processors roundtable discussion in 2013, is that the comfort level in understanding stirred milling technologies is not at the level of that of tumbling mills. The aim of this paper is to contribute to increasing the general comfort level with stirred milling technologies by developing a better understanding of how power and energy is affected by stirred mill impellor design and mill operation. This will be accomplished by first completing an overview of the power models found in the literature followed by a general description of DEM and CFD stirred mill models as well as the insights that can be drawn from them. Finally, a generic stirred mill power model will be presented and applied to different stirred mill types in order to develop some insights into the differences between different mill types. The paper will close with a discussion on some of the challenges that these models have and how future research might contribute to overcoming them."

"The Victor Diamond Mine is located in the James Bay lowlands, 90 km west of the First Nations village of Attawapiskat. The project was the first of its kind in northern Ontario and was completed approximately 9 months ahead of schedule.The Victor Mine process plant flowsheet was designed to produce a 95 - 98% by weight diamond concentrate. Main processing steps include 3 stages of comminution, dense medium separation and proprietary x-ray technology for final recovery. Reagent consumption for this process is limited to flocculant, for thickening of fine processed kimberlite, and FeSi for the dense medium separation.The commissioning phase of the Victor Project was executed over a period of 6 months and commenced prior to substantial completion of construction. The approach used was to focus on and complete commissioning of the higher risk dense medium separation and recovery systems prior to construction completion of up stream systems.INTRODUCTIONThe development of the Victor Diamond Mine took place over a period of approximately 5 years and had a capital cost of CAD997 million. It was a greenfields project in an undeveloped region of northern Ontario, only accessible by winter road. Figure 1, below, displays the location of the project within Ontario.The main stages of the project included feasibility, environmental permitting, engineering, construction, and commissioning. At the onset of the engineering phase, the mine was scheduled to enter production in October 2008. Through a team effort between AMEC and DeBeers Canada, the schedule was advanced by 6 months towards the goal of project completion in April 2008. Production status was attained in January 2008, approximately 9 months ahead of the original schedule. This paper focuses on the commissioning aspects of the project and includes a less detailed discussion of the engineering stage."

"An AG/SAG mill was commissioned at the Brunswick mine concentrator in October 1998. This paper discusses the original shell top hat liner design for the bi-directional AG/SAG mill, observed liner wear, subsequent liner design modifications, and benefits.The original liners were chrome-moly steel Norsteel with rubber grates and rubber-lined pulp lifters. The design was based on experiences of other AG/SAG mills and recommendations by the liner supplier, Norcast. Liner design modifications were made in an iterative fashion after observing the wear rate profile of the liners; over ten liner sets were implemented. Shell liner design improvements were supported by a design of experiments approach in conjunction with discrete element method (DEM) charge motion simulations. Design optimization took into account lining costs and impacts on operating performance. The team approach to the liner design improvements process is described with emphasis on the application of the design of experiments. The liner wear history and mill operating performance are presented."
