"The leaching of sulphide minerals generates a significant amount of energy. There are three systems that might be used to remove this energy. These are: cooling coils, quench water, and flash recycle. Flash recycle is the recycling of slurry from the autoclave to the feed tank. Heat is removed in this arrangement when the slurry at elevated temperature and pressure is flashed to atmosphere, releasing steam. The slurry is returned to the autoclave at lower temperature, resulting in cooling. The cooling is directly proportional to the steam released from the recycled slurry. Design equations and results for the flash recycle system are presented. A fourth proposal for removing heat is to recycle slurry from the back of the autoclave. These four alternatives not only remove the heat, but also have an effect on the leaching efficiency. Amongst the four alternatives, design calculations indicate that the flash recycle option is the optimal solution in terms of leaching efficiency and heat removal, and recycling product from the back of the autoclave is the worst. In spite of its efficiency in terms of heat removal and leaching, the implementation of the flash recycle system is limited to a few operations in the platinum industry.INTRODUCTIONIn considering ways to improve leaching operations, focus is placed on the chemistry, on the kinetics, the agitation and perhaps even on the gas mass transfer conditions. "INTRODUCTIONThis article documents the current non-metallic mineral s resources of Manitoba (Fig. I), and makes comparisons with currently producing deposits in North America and elsewhere in the world. Industrial minerals may lack the glamour of gold, silver or the base metals, but they contributed approximately 20070 to the value of Manitoba's raw materials, and even out-performed our petroleum industry, except during the oil boom of the early eighties (Fig. 2). Values per tonne of industrial commodities can be as high or higher than for base metal ores. Commodity prices (Canadian), listed in the February 1988 issue of Industrial Minerals magazine, are: talc $202.00 - $306.00, sillimanite $427.00; kaolin $69.00 - $270.00; garnet $175.00 - $250.00; and mica $405.00 - $540.00. The prices are converted to Canadian dollars using the prevailing exchange rates of February I, 1988. Some commodities are not sold by weight. Building stone, for example, is sold by the cubic foot. An average rough granite block, 4 ft by 4 ft by 8 ft, is worth approximately $2000 sitting on the quarry 1100r in southeastern Manitoba (Fig. 3).Thus, not all rocks that do not contain sulphides are worthless. Some may be extracted more profitably than either the base or precious-metal bearing varieties.Industrial Mineral CommoditiesThe commodities available in Manitoba are described in two categories: (1) those already in production that have additional development or expansion potential, and (2) those not in production logical information available at this time.Current Industrial Mineral ProductionThe commodities described herein are currently in commercial production in Manitoba (Fig. 4). THE plains of southern Alberta constitute one of the classic areas of geological investigation in Canada, for it was here in 1874, and in 1881 to 1883, that George Mercer Dawson (1, 2, 3) made the pioneer observations that are basic to all subsequent work on the interior plains of Canada. Dawson's work was extended eastward by R. G. McConnell ( 4) and northward by J. B. Tyrrell( 5) , but it remained. for D. B. Dowling to re-examine Dawson's Bow and Belly River Area and to make certain necessary revisions in the stratigraphical system of his predecessor. In 1917, Dowling published his memoir, The Southern Plains of Alberta( 6) , which remained for over ten years the last word on the stratigraphy and structure of the area described. It is generally conceded that Dowling's work made known the existence of a great artesian basin beneath the semi-arid plains of southeastern Alberta. In addition, his structural studies greatly stimulated the search for natural gas and petroleum. The most recent general publications on this area by the Geological Survey are based on the field work of M. Y. Williams, E. J. Whittaker, W. S. Dyer, and P. S. Warren, between the years 1923 and 1926. Their results were embodied in the Calgary Sheet (7) and the memoir, Geology of Southern Alberta and Southwestern Saskatchewan (8). By this time, the number of geologists working in Alberta in the development of the petroleum and natural gas industries had become large, and in 1931 the Alberta Association of Petroleum Geologist~ offered the Donaldson Bogart Dowling Memorial Symposium on Stratigraphy of Southern Alberta( 9) , a most valuable series of papers descriptive both of the ,surface stratigraphy and that observed in the well records.

"This paper reviews the history of modern iron-control processes in hydrometallurgy. Attention is paid to processes developed in the electrolytic zinc industry for removal of iron from zinc sulfate leach liquors and the problems faced by the industry in the safe disposal of the iron residues produced by these processes. Past lessons learned are projected onto current efforts to develop hydrometallurgical processes for treatment of copper sulfide concentrates. It is argued that any attempt to create a “hydrometallurgical copper smelter” will fail, unless methods are developed that can recover iron in a form that can be directly used by the steel or pigment industries.RÉSUMÉ Cet article passe en revue l’histoire des procédés modernes de contrôle du fer en hydrométallurgie. Il accordera une attention particulière aux procédés développés dans l’industrie du zinc électrolytique pour l’élimination du fer dans les liqueurs lixiviantes de sulfate de zinc anhydre, ainsi qu’aux problèmes rencontrés par l’industrie en termes d’élimination sans danger des résidus ferreux générés par ces procédés. This was to take the form of a plenary lecture at the 4th Symposium on Iron Control in Hydrometallurgy, which formed part of the 28th International Mineral Processing Congress, held in Quebec City in September 2016.I was naturally flattered that the invitation was to give the lecture at an IMPC, the prestigious conference series that has been held since the 1950s. That this particular IMPC was to include the 4th Symposium on Iron Control in Hydrometallurgy, a conference series held only every 10 years, made the invitation even more appealing and appropriate. This was because I had been co-chairman of the First Symposium on Iron Control, together with my erstwhile colleague, John Dutrizac, which was held 30 years ago in Toronto."

FOLLOWING World War II there was an urgent need for the development of domestic sources of ilmenite to take care of the expanding needs of the titanium dioxide pigment industry. In addition, there was the interest by the pigment manufucturers and others in titanium metal. Prior to the war the pigment industry in the United States had obtained its major tonnage of ilmenite, analyzing 55- ?60 per cent Ti02, from India. However, as a result of the shipping situation which developed during the war, the pigment manufacturers had to consider the use of lower grades of ilmenite located on this continent .and several companies undertook extensive exploration programmes to locate and develop such orebodies. Probably the most significant deposit that was found as a result of these ?programmes was the orebody .at Allard Lake, Quebec, owned by the Quebec Iron and Titanium Corporation. This ?Company was formed in 1948 by the Kennecott Copper Corporation and the New Jersey Zinc Company to mine this ilmenite ore and treat it in electric furnaces to produce titanium dioxide slag for the pigment industry and iron for the steel industry.

Introduction The Author As the pail of smoke and wartime destruction gradually rises from the surface of the earth, from all countries, statesmen assemble to discuss and prepare pacts and treaties which are designed to, once more, bring people of all nations to understand each other and live in harmony. Scientists and engineers throughout the world are also undergoing a drastic reconversion in their ideas and objectives. No longer do they think only in terms of destruction and twist their brains to develop more devastating weapons or to surpass production records of war machinery. They have turned their eyes and ambitions to more pleasant tasks and are taking stock of wartime developments in materials, fabricating procedures, and equipment, many of which had been carefully shrouded with a veil of secrecy, and are applying their new knowledge to the fabrication or improvement of the tools of peace. The next few years will see the gradual elimination of scores of substitutes and makeshifts, expedients which the constantly changing law of supply and demand' under wartime stress necessitated. The universal search for satisfactory substitutes, however, has resulted in a general awakening of plant engineers to the possibilities of materials with which they were relatively inexperienced, with the result that, in many instances, what was considered a substitution at the outset turned out to be more satisfactory than the original material, and, in reality, can be considered a worthwhile development. Not only have materials been explored, but existing fabricating processes have been reviewed, and others, built around the properties and characteristics of new materials, created.

Discharge cones for large Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) and Autogenous Grinding (AG) mills are subjected to high wear as significant volumes of ground ore and slurry exit the mill. With the larger diameter mills of 32ft to 40ft in size becoming the norm, very high, concentrated wear is highlighting the limitations of conventional discharge cones and frequent changes are subsequently required. This paper outlines the advances made in the design of the Bullnose discharge cone. Superior wear materials to increase wear life over conventional rubber or chrome-moly steel discharge cones and the introduction of key design features to reduce reline times and improve fit and safety during installation, offer significant opportunities for the mill operator. Collated from multiple case studies, the wear data and reline history from 2004 to present clearly illustrate the way in which superior component longevity has reduced the frequency of relines over the life of the product to increase mill availability and effectively increase the tonnes milled in a period.

Mineral recovery from the remaining low-grade or finely dispersed ores requires grinding for liberation. High energy consumption during grinding and poor efficiency associated with the beneficiation of fine minerals are two important problems facing the mineral industry . A small group has been set up at the Dominion Observatory, Ottawa, to make a survey of terrestrial heat flow throughout Canada. Terrestrial heat flow is the heat rising from the interior of the earth and escaping at the surface, and is calculated from a knowledge of under-ground temperature distribution and the thermal conductivity of rocks. A small number of diamond drill holes are being sunk for the purpose of measuring temperatures below the surface, but the program is inadequate for a thorough survey. Mines and holes drilled for other purposes are being sought by the Dominion Observatory group to supplement their own drilling program. F ROM January, 1.962, to December, 1964, geo-physicists of many nations will be cooperating in the "International Upper Mantle Project." Unlike tl1e International Geophysical Year, which was mainly concerned with the fluid layers surrounding the earth, the Upper Mantle Project is an intensive study of the solid earth. Canada, with its large land area and extensive Precambrian Shield, is an active participant in the project.

ABSTRACT Understanding process histories and worker exposures in nickel production operations is critical in determining the role nickel compounds play in respiratory cancer incidence. As part of a series on Vale Canada’s (previously known as Inco) nickel processing operations, this paper includes descriptions of Ni electrolytic operations at refineries in Port Colborne, Ontario (1922–1984), and Thompson, Manitoba (1961–present). Industrial hygiene measurements, by area and personal sampling, of workplace aerosols at these operations are reported.

The Tata Steel mill at Skinningrove in the North East of England produces top hat sections for mineshaft guides in sizes 102 and 150 mm. The top hat section is the technically preferred shaft guide choice for modern deep mine shafts. This paper explores the relative service performance of top hat and square hollow section guides in service. Comparative corrosion performance is reviewed and the paper describes work commissioned by Tata Steel (as Corus) undertaken by Aker Kvaerner Engineering to evaluate relative winding speeds, relative loads and fatigue life in service. The experience of supply to UK Potash mining is discussed and the future view of high capacity hoisting and larger section size market need and availability is assessed.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) threaten the wellbeing and livelihood of a large number of construction workers incurring a significant cost to society. We present a new method to monitor and diagnose MSD risks in the workplace. The sensing unit of the system is an optical encoder encompassed within a non-intrusive exoskeleton to measure the joint angle of interest. This sensor can be applied to ball-and-socket and hinge-type joints of the human body, such as the shoulder, elbow, and knee joints. The system is contactless and does not require markers or cameras. Angle measurements are acquired directly without mathematical post-processing, thereby avoiding numerical noise and drift challenges. The system is a simple, robust, and deployable, but it currently lacks resolution of parallel degrees of freedom.

MECHANIZATION During the last fifteen years, numerous attempts have been made to mechanize the operations of loading ore and placing till. It is to be regretted that, to date, little progress has been made in this direction. The comparative efficiency of manual labour in Spain is the factor largely responsible for the failure to cheapen costs by mechanization. The necessity for careful classification of the ore and the need for keeping all openings small also makes the problem one of difficulty. It may be of interest to describe the various attempts at mechanization that have so far been made. CONVEYORS: (1) When stoping by layout III in San Dionisio, a trial was made of transporting the filling by jigging conveyors. This method proved un-economical, as the wall building and spreading of the till could not keep pace with the delivery, with the result that the machinery was idle a great part of the shift. (2) The transport of ore from the working places to the ore-passes by jigging conveyors and belts was also tried. Although more successful than in the case of the fill, the method could not compete with that of hand tramming, principally due to the high cost of (a) maintenance caused by the abrasiveness of pyrites, and (b) labour constantly employed on re-aligning the conveyors owing to the constant settlement of the floor. In a few cases, where a sill floor was being blocked out in virgin ground, the method showed a saving. SCRAPERS: Frequent attempts at loading by scrapers have been made, but again the only success obtained has been in the blocking-out of sill floors. The principal obstacle to the successful application of scraping, other than on the sill floor, has been that the openings, which have to be small, call for a light scraper outfit, whereas, in practice, a heavy scraper and at least a 25 h.p. winch are necessary for handling satisfactorily the ore, which is heavy and which breaks somewhat blockily.

This paper describes the future position of metallurgical coal, particularly as applied to Canadian reserves. Quality coking coal is declining in availability, but preheating practices may alleviate this situation to some extent. Two new processes are discussed in the paper - formed coke and direct reduction - and their coal specifications are outlined.

"During the previous decade, the role of spray-on liners within the mining industry was limited to providing a corrosion resistant coating to screen and bolts; however, increasingly, liners are being used as ground support products. Expanding use and testing of liners have demonstrated their ground support function, yet the definitive support mechanism is still under debate. The most promising theory is the retain/hold/reinforcement concept (Kaiser et al.,1992). This conceptual theory has been the basis for the recent underground trials at INCO where, specifically, shotcrete and MIROC Mineguard were tested in two trials to further define limitations and applications of each liner.In a cursory overview, shotcrete is becoming accepted as a support product, while Mineguard is only slowly gaining acceptance.This discrepancy is the result of the corresponding life-spans within the industry, whereby shotcrete has had wide-spread use for decades, yet Mineguard has only recently been introduced. Currently at INCO, shotcrete is primarily used: to provide support in poor ground conditions, to add stability when developing through backfill, and to provide damage control in seismically active mines. It is also used to protect production headings and secondary-blasting chambers from fly-rock damage during blasting. Despite an obvious support function of the liner, shotcrete has always been used in addition to bolts and screen. Comparatively, Mineguard is still in the testing stage, where the greatest potential is increased productivity for applications in multi-tasking development headings. In this scenario, Mineguard provides instant support to replace screen, and bolts temporarily. When the heading has advanced, the drill and support crews work in tandem, drilling off the next round and installing bolts for long-term radial support, respectively. Other potential applications of Mineguard are within production headings to replace screen in the back, and screen and bolts in walls. The potential for both liners to replace conventional support is clearly war-ranted, such that defining the support role was the primary goal of the two underground trials."
