The following paper describes the refining practice for the production of lead, silver and gold at the works of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd., Port Pirie, South Australia.The refinery is situated on the wharf frontage and is built parallel with it. The refinery occupies an area of approximately 3380 square yards. (Fig. 8)There are two buildings, one containing the softening and de-silverising sections, measuring 225 ft. x 57t ft., while the other building, which measures 225 ft. x 90 ft. covers the de-zincing, lead moulding, retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections. (Fig. 1)The retorting, cupellation, and dore parting sections are completely isolated from the rest of the plant by strong small-mesh wire gratings welded to steel uprights. The dore parting plant and generator room are further isolated by a brick wall, built up to the roof. The two main buildings are steel structures, with outer walls and roof of "Robertson" corrugated sheeting; the side and end walls are open for some distance above the ground, and this, coupled with the high roof which is 50 ft. from ground level, ensures the free access of air and light. Conditions are such that operators work in a clear atmosphere.

Samples weighing O· 2 g are digested with 2 ml of 72 per cent perchloric acid for 2 hr at 180°C, and then diluted to 10 ml. with water. After settling, an aliquot of clear solution is reduced with ascorbic-citric acid, and then a zinc dithiol solution is added to form a coloured molybdenum complex which is extracted with petroleum spirit for comparison with standards.Concentrations down to 2 p.p.m. may be analysed at rates up to 150 determinations per day.

With depth, many gold ores become sulfidic with minerals such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite becoming prevalent. In addition, many underground gold mines use tailings backfill to bind and store the waste. In these cases, acid mine drainage (AMD) can become an issue. One approach to the control of AMD is desulfurisation whereby the sulfide minerals are removed prior to disposal. Four sulfide tailings samples, representing different ore types and gold and base metal operations, were selected for assessment and testing using simple physical beneficiation techniques. The aim was to determine the extent to which mineral processing methods were suitable for separating sulfides from non-sulfides and for extracting potentially marketable by-products from the tailings. In order to streamline the testing procedure a simple diagnostic separation technique was developed to enable quick screening of bulk sulfide tailings for suitability for reprocessing. The testing procedure involved detailed characterisation and a sequential set of testing regimes based on simple unit processes including water washing, classification, gravity concentration, magnetic separation and bulk flotation. The preliminary test results indicate each unit process can play an important part in producing effective sulfide/non-sulfide separations and in generating useful by-products from the tailings. Potential valuable products identified include coarse, benign silica sands, bulk iron sulfide products rich in pyrite and/or pyrrhotite, high-grade iron products (magnetite) low in silica, low-volume bulk sulfide concentrates and low-grade molybdenite and talc products. The work presented shows how sulfide tailings can be viewed as a resource rather than a waste stream, and identifies a pathway for developing a more sustainable approach to the environmental management of sulfide tailings for the future.

The selection of the best comminution circuit for the preparation of concentration feed is a compromise based on economics, energy efficiency, labour costs, steel consumption, availability and other factors specific to each case. It is postulated that the selection must be a choice of one of the eight basic comminution circuits which can be divided into two basic groups, (1) autogenous or semi-autogenous primary mills with or without a secondary grinding stage and (2) fine crushing usually in cone crushers followed by a rod mill-ball mill circuit or a single stage ball mill circuit. The accuracy of selection may be improved by pilot plant and laboratory tests which are described in this paper. For (1) above, testing includes media competency tests with standard impact crushing, grindability and abrasion tests followed by pilot plant tests. For (2) above, bench scale crushability, grindability and abrasion testing is available. It is suggested that, through these tests, it should be possible to eliminate all but one in each group of basic comminution circuits. Then engineering and economic studies should lead to the best comminution circuit for the specific requirement.

The selection of Sydney and Port Kembla for the First Ordinary Meeting of the Institute for 1938 was, no doubt, a recognition of the celebrations marking the 150th Anniversary of the first settlement of this country. In selecting a theme for my Presidential Address, I propose to depart from the precedents of my distinguished predecessors, as I feel that this year of celebration is the natural year for a brief review of the history and progress of the Institute.In July, 1892, the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its Annual Conference in Ballarat, Victoria, when Mr. Uriah Dudley, who attended as a delegate from Broken Hill, brought forward the advisability of the formation of an Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Mr. Dudley was authorised to take such action as he thought fit, and the result was the formation of a Provisional Committee in Broken Hill of men who were mostly members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Delivered at the University of Sydney, on June 4th, 1954.THE TORCH WE HOLDLast year Our Institute celebrated its Diamond Jubilee, coincident with the holding of the Fifth Empire Mining and Metallurigcal Congress in Australia and New Zealand. We can be proud of our growth over the 61 years since the inaugural meeting in Adelaide in April, 1893, which followed suggestions from a provisional committee of mining men, formed in 1892 in Broken Hill.We can also be proud of our technical achievements in the fields of economic geology, mining and metallurgy.Should we be content with the growth of our mining and metallurgical industries over these years? My answer is in the negative. Following the experimental work of Denny, Robson, and Irwin, and the clinical investigation by Crombie and Blaisdell, an investigation of aluminium therapy was begun at Washington, Pa., which is situated In a very large industrial section of the State. Some of the men to be studied were from plants manufacturing silica brick, refractories used in steel and glass manufacturing, and semi-porcelain table-ware; others were workers in foundries, sand blasters, and men engaged in the quarrying of ganister rock.This group of workmen gave an opportunity to study the effects of aluminium on various types of silicosis which differed somewhat from that found in hard-rock miners.EXPOSUREIn their occupations, the men studied were exposed to silica dust concentrations ranging from 17 to 97 per cent free silica. In the silica brick industries, the unfired product averages 96 per cent silica in the form of quartz, whereas the fired brick contains 50 to 62 per cent. cristobalite plus 11 to 80 per cent. tridymite, forms of silica that, on account of their higher solubility, are more toxic than quartz. The operational dust counts in the plants varied from 15 to 9,500 particles per c.c., and the median particle size from the aerial samples was 1.0 micron for the green product and 2.0 microns for the fired product. The length of exposure varied with the occupation as well as with the individual plant, but disabling silicosis could be produced in less than four years in certain exposures. The average time needed to produce radiological silicosis in those susceptible to this disease was eight years. Some of the men in our series of cases have been treated as long as fifteen years after exposure had ceased, and have improved under treatment.The dust counts mentioned above had been reduced prior to the aluminium therapy studies and the presen.t exposures do not exceed '900 particles per c.c., the average being 370 particles. per c.c. This improvement in dust conditions was due to improved dust control apparatus, which was installed before aluminium therapy was instituted. The oxidation of ferrous sulphate to ferric sulphate with air and oxygen in a gas lift percolator was investigated with initial Fe2+ concentrations in the range 0·01 M to 1·0 M,temperatures in the range 20-80°C, and pH in the range oto 2.The rate of formation of Fe3+ was found to be well described by the rate expressionEquation 1and a consistent mechanism is proposed.The presence of Cu2+ was found to cause an increased rate of oxidation, the effect being greater with Cu2+ concentrations increasing in the range 0·001 M - 0·01 M in 0·2 M Fe2+. The effect of other solutes containing Ni, Zn, Mn, Co, Hg, Cl, Mo, NH4, As, Cr, or Na at a concentration of 0·001 M in 0·2 M Fe2+ was negligible.

It is now five years since the advent of gold-dredging in Australia, the State of New South 'Wales, or colony as it was, being the first to adopt this system of gold-getting, and the credit of its introduction rests with a member of this Institute, Mr. Chas. L. Garland, who commenced operations with his dredge on the Macquarie River, at the junction of the Muckerawa Creek, in the month of March, 1899. A rotating disc of precipitant zinc in a single stage flow reactor was used to study the effects of deposit mass on the reaction kinetics of copper cementing on to zinc from dilute aqueous solutions.The reaction rate is controlled by external mass transport and the mass transfer coefficient (relative to the original precipitant area) is dependent on the quantity of deposit present. For deposit masses up to about 0·3 mg/cm2 the mass transfer coefficient (first order rate constant) is that expected for the counter-diffusion of reactant and product cations through a laminar boundary layer to a smooth rotating disc. For depositmasses from 0·3 mg/cm2 to about 5 mg/cm2, the mass transfer coefficient increases significantly with deposit mass. For deposit masses greater than 5 mg/cm2 and at least up to 12 mg/cm2, the mass transfer coefficient has again a constant value which is some four to seven times the initial ("deposit free") value. The rate constant for the entire range of deposit masses studied (0 to 12 mg/cm2 ) can be expressed empirically as a cumulative normal distribution of the logarithm of the deposit mass.The enhancement in the mass transfer coefficient for deposit masses greater than 5 mg/cm2 relative to the initial mass transfer coefficient depends on the local operating conditions and increases with increasing disc rotational speed. This enhancement is, however, independent of the previous history of reaction rates.

In previous papers (1, 2), the influence on the creep resistance of elements normally found in commercial lead has been recorded. The results in the present paper refer to the influence of calcium, an element which is not found naturally in lead, but which has been used commercially in the form of alloys. It was realised that calcium would act as a deoxidising agent for lead-and in fact it was with this feature in view that both calcium and magnesium were used as additions. Subsequent work (including the results given in the present paper) has tended to diminish the importance which at first seemed to be associated with the presence of oxygen in lead. The structure of the dilute calcium lead alloys has been worked out in detail (S) and the phase diagram shows the existence of limited solid solubility and a compound CaPbs.

Fundamental studies on the transformations of iron oxides have been carried out and related to the solution conditions in the Becher Process. The results show that a number of iron oxide interconversion reactions occur in the aeration reactor with the products depending on the pH, temperature and oxidation potential of the aeration liquor. It is concluded that the lack of process control in the aeration reactor of the Becher Process significantly hinders the ability to predict and produce high quality single phase iron oxides of a consistent colour.

Underground Mine Drainage may be conveniently divided into two operations:(a) Collecting and transporting drainage water to the pump eastern.(b) Elevating water to the surfacc by pumping.This short paper describes a system which automatically performs operation "a" and which has been developed on the South mine at Broken Hill, under the supervision of the mine foreman, Mr. F. McDonell. Aqueous oxidation is a possible alternative to roasting for the processing of gold bearing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) concentrates. The reaction has been studied by voltammetry and this has shown, for the first time, that FeAsS can be readily dissolved without passivation at room temperature in dilute sulphuric acid at relatively modest oxidation potentials (0.7 V SHE). The reaction forms sulphur on the mineral surface and the oxidant consumption is thus minimal. Two practical modes of slurry oxidation are listed.

Recently discovered Carboniferous bentonites are variable in charadeI and thickness, but being altered aeolian, ash-fall tuffs, they are probably extensive. Most are the Ca-montmorillonite type without the natural swelling characteristics of the Wyoming deposits, but their situation, thickness, and response to beneficiation through cation exchange may give them some potential as sources of future economic deposits.INTRODUCTIONLoughnan and See (1959) gave an account of bentonites and fuller's earth deposits of New South Wales. The most likely potential industrial sources were those occurring in the uppermost formations of the Newcastle and Singleton Coal Measures (Permian) in the Hunter Valley and deposited during epochs not marked by strong contemporary vulcanicity.One feature of the record of known occurrences at that time was the absence of bentonites from the thick volcanic sequences of the Carboniferous, but since this paper appeared, many bentonite beds have been discovered by the writer in the Carboniferous facies formerly known as the "Kuttung Series".The purpose of this contribution is to report briefly on the occurrence, genesis, mineralogy, and economic potential of these deposits which augment possible sources of bentonite near major industrial centres on the eastern seaboard.The potential world demand for bentonite would increase markedly with the trend to pelletization in the steel industry, if its use in this field became more general. Solutions of acetonitrile in water dissolve water soluble copper(I) chloride. Removal of volatile acetonitrile from the resulting solutions, by distillation with low grade steam, precipitates pure copper(I) chloride. This is used to purify a crude copper chloride sublimate from the chlorination of nickel matte but is applicable to other sources of copper(I) chloride. The pure product can be converted to pure copper(I) oxide, copper(II) oxychloride or pure copper metal directly.

Exploration drilling by Joint Venture partners CRA Exploration Pty Ltd and Elders Mining PNG Pty Ltd has discovered a signif- icant copper and gold deposit at the Wafi River prospect, 60km WSW of Lae in Papua New Guinea. An indicated resource of 18Mt at 2.5g/t Au using a lg/t cutoff has been delineated in Zone A. No estimate has been determined for the separate copper occurr- ence at Rafferty's Zone but the copper will be significant to the project. Metallurgical studies on the gold indicate that the primary ore is refractory to direct cyanidation giving a highly variable and inadequate response. All conventional refractory ore oxidation techniques perform well on both ore and pyrite concentrate and oxidation occurs rapidly. No metallurgical studies on the copper mineralisation have been undertaken. Hypogene covellite and chalcocite copper mineralisation is associated with an intensely quartz-stockworked, and quartz and alunite-altered intrusive. Economically significant gold mineralisation occurs in distal subhorizontal lenses, within a sedimentary host, that plunge toward the intrusive. These lenses are sandwiched between overlying quartz and alunite-altered zones and underlying quartz and smectite zones in a mixed zone of quartz, dickite, kaolinite and illite alteration. The alteration and mineralisation is classified as a high sulphidation, epithermal style resulting from the influx of hot, acid magmatic fluids. Preliminary land ownership, road access, power supply and mine infrastructure studies are in progress. The project is currently at an advanced exploration stage.
