IT Is well known that manganese will desulfurize molten iron through the formation of manganese sulfide, which, being only slightly soluble in the metal, rises to and enters the slag where it remains as such (mixer slag) or is converted partly or wholly to calcium sulfide (basic open¬hearth slag). The reaction by which manganese sulfide is formed is Mn + FeS = MnS + Fe. This reaction is generally considered to be reversible, although McCance1 states- that such is not the case. The experimental work was carried out to confirm the results of Rohl2 as to the reversibility of the reaction. Six trials are herein considered. In each 200 grams of electrolytic iron free from manganese and sulfur were melted in a pure zirconia crucible in a carbon resistance electric furnace. To the melted iron in runs 2, 3 and 4 metallic manganese and manganese sulfide were added to give 1, 2 and 4 per cent. manganese respectively, with 0.50 per cent. of sulfur in each. In runs 5, 6 and 7, metallic manganese andiron sulfide to give the same proportions of manganese and sulphur as in runs 2, 3 and 4, were added. The melts were held molten in the furnace for an hour and then cast into small ingots.

The possible oil territory of Alabama can be readily divided into two regions, the Paleozoic area of the north, and the Coastal Plain province of Cretaceous and younger formations lying to the south. This latter area has received much attention in the last few years and has been described by a number of writers.' Although the possibilities of the Cretaceous series have been much emphasized by recent writers, the fact remains that the two, or possibly three, localities where oil or gas have been found in anything like paying quantities are confined to the area of Carboniferous rocks. Moreover, almost all of the oil seeps and a good percentage of the gas seeps are confined to this area.2 Topographically, as well as structurally, the Paleozoic area can be divided into three rather well defined provinces: (1) The broad, open Coosa Valley lying adjacent to the crystalline oldland, with comparatively little relief, except for occasional longitudinal ridges and rather intense folding; (2) the plateau region of horizontal or gently warped Pennsylvanian strata broken by occasional anticlinal valleys aligned northeast and southwest, outliers of the Coosa Valley proper, in which the older Paleozoic formations are exposed—a region of much relief (200

Results of a large scale compression test in situ are the subject of discussion. A cube of coal having an edge length of 1.5 meters was subjected to uniaxial compression tests in situ. At the same time both load and deformation were controlled. Deformations were measured on 60 short measurement bases, each 23 cm in length. The bases were uniformly distributed on the side surface of the cube, forming five horizontal rows and twelve columns on the development of the surface. Readings were taken from each gauge for each level of loading which was increased step by step. Due to heterogeneity of the rock, readings showed scatter. Scattered data were approximated by a plane, using the least squares method for each row separately and for the entire population of bases. Orientation of the planes are analyzed. The geometrical measure of the bending moment is introduced. It shows that the magnitude of the bending moment and the bending plane differed from row to row, thus implying that the cube was not only bent but twisted as well. This complex behaviour of the coal cube is apparently caused by its heterogeneity and vertical anisotropy. The results constitute a contribution to the verification of existing design criteria on the stability of mining pillars.

F. W. SPERR, Houghton, Mich.-Why does 10 to 20 per cent. of the ore formation have to he lost? It is not clear to me why it should not all be taken out, from the conditions as I saw them underground this afternoon. H. I. YOUNG.-The grade of our ore is so low that we cannot stand the expense of timbering to support the roof, which, in a sheet-ground mine, would be from 25 to 50 per cent. of our total mining cost at present. After the orebody is mined out, we can often recover 10 to 20 per cent. of the material that is left. F. W. SPERR.-I think it should be a very simple mining engineering problem to mine all of that mineral without the use of a stick of timber. Similar work has been done in the mines of Grand Rapids Plaster Co. The usual operation in deposits of this kind is to open up and excavate as far as the roof will stand; when it caves, start in and dig somewhere else. But in the case I referred to they learned that by working the ground more systematically and leaving in a sufficient amount of pillar, they could later draw those pillars and get them all, and avoid uncon¬trolled breakages which would be likely to occur if they tried to hold up the overburden permanently. From the point of view of safety and also from the financial point of view, I contend that it is better to keep the caving under control and make it do what you want it to do, rather than to take out what you can conveniently for the time being and after a while be compelled to let the overburden do what it pleases.

THE study of earthquakes long ago developed the fact that by studying the travel times of the various groups of waves from the same earthquake, as received on seismographs at varying distances, major discon-tinuities in the earth's crust could be reasonably well defined. Using this original discovery, and adapting the mathematical methods originally devised in seis-mology for determining the depth below the surface at which such discontinuities occur, other investigators were able to develop a new branch of seismology which promises to be extremely useful in extending the boun-daries of our information oil local conditions below the earth's surface. As an outstanding example of the applications of this work, we have the so-called "seismo-graph" exploration of the Gulf Coastal region, which has resulted in the discovery of a large number of salt domes, from many of which oil fields may be developed. The original seismological investigations, from which different major discontinuities in the earth's crust were deduced, as well as these later successful experiments in finding salt-dome structures, involve relatively simple problems. In each case we are dealing with surface materials in which elastic waves will be propagated with a fairly definite velocity. Under this material we have something very different, in which the elastic waves will be propagated with a much higher velocity. The transition from one medium to another is like-wise relatively abrupt. For example, in. the Gulf Coastal region the sedimentary formations have a velocity of 6000 or 7000 ft. per sec., while the velocity of elastic waves in the cap rock of a salt dome" may exceed 15,000 ft. per sec. Under such conditions, de-lineation of the formation is a relatively simple matter, and, furthermore, there is very little opportunity for ambiguous results.

In an earlier paper1, the author described a method of interpreting earth-resistivity curves, based on the theoretical investigation of a single horizontal underlying stratum. If the four-electrode system of Wenner is employed, the resistivity in a homogeneous soil is given by the formula p = 2paR [1] where a is the electrode separation and R is the resistance of the earth between the two inner electrodes. If the earth is not perfectly homo¬geneous, the application of this formula gives an apparent specific resistance varying with the electrode separation. In the special case of the single horizontal underlying stratum, there is a surface layer of thickness h and resistivity pi and a lower layer, extend-ing to infinity, of resistivity p2. It has been shown by Lancaster-Jones2 that the apparent resistivity, obtained by an application of equation 1 is related to the true resistivities, the depth h and the electrode separation a by an expression of the form pa/p1 = 1 + 4F [2] where Pa is the apparent resistivity and F is a function (actually an infinite series), of the ratio h/a, and a reflection coefficient k = (p2 - p1)/(p2 + p1). For given values of h/a and k, the right-hand side of equation 2 can be calculated, and curves drawn showing the relationship between Pa/P1, h/a and k. Such a set of curves for the case when pi > P2 is given in Fig. 1.

ARTICLE I Definitions Section 1.-For the purpose of these regulations (proposed), definitions are as follows: Well.-A bore-hole drilled for the purpose of developing natural gas or petroleum, or a bore-hole producing natural gas or petroleum. Well Operator.-Any person, persons, firm, partnership, corporation, company or association that proposes to, or does drill, operate, or abandon a well as herein defined. Coal Operator.-Any person, persons, firm, partnership, corporation, company or association that proposes to, or does operate, a coal mine in territory known or reputed to be underlain with oil or gas-bearing strata. State Mining Department.-The duly constituted authorities of a state having jurisdiction over coal-mining operations. Plat.-A map, drawing, or print made in accordance with the pro-visions of these regulations (proposed). Casing.-The pipe greater than 3 in. in diameter commonly used in wells drilled for natural gas and petroleum. Oil and Gas.-Synonyms, respectively, for petroleum and natural gas. Cement.-Hydraulic cement properly nixed with water only. Workable Coal Bed.-A coal bed in which, in the united judgment of the coal operator, the well operator and the State Mining Department, protection for life or property will be required when wells are drilled through it.

Hydrogeological techniques were used to solve problems of slope stability in open-pit mines of the Eufaula bauxite district, Ala. Geologic and hydrologic data were evaluated and used to design a system of dewatering wells to enable the operators to mine bauxite more efficiently and economically. Walls of open-pit mines in the district were subsequently stabilized by the operation of the dewatering system. Three open- pit mines, each at varying stages of the mining process, of the A.P. Green Refractories Co., were used to develop a sequential series of guidelines that indicate how to effectively remove ground water from the formations surrounding the ore bodies in the district. The use of sound engineering principles in well design, in combination with the correct interpretation of the pit hydrology provided the basis for solutions of the slope-stabilization problem and aided in the economical removal of bauxite from mines of the district.

Abstract-Observations of ground behavior in mining the Choka Dulkan ore body have been described. Ore recovery was limited to approximately 60% because unconsolidated hydraulic fill did not permit either the widening of stope spans nor secondary ore recovery from pillars. Stope undercutting induced high stress concentrations. However, as extraction progressed, ground conditions improved but before extraction was complete they deteriorated again. After completion of a stope, the remnant rib and crown pillars continued to be deformed by other stresses for some time.

Complexity of Rock-Fractures.—The strains to which rocks have been subjected are manifestly very complex, and it is entirely safe to presume that every possible mode of deformation and rupture is exemplified. The most superficial inspection of any ordinary mountain region is sufficient to assure the observer that the rocks have been pressed, stretched, bent, buckled, twisted, and shorn. The study of torsional rupture cannot fail, therefore, to throw light on geological phenomena. The question is how areas which have been broken in this manner are to be distinguished from those which have yielded to other systems of forces. Phenomena of Joints.—It is well known that a large part of the more homogeneous rocks and some very heterogeneous rocks are intersected by partings often ailed joints. These partings are frequently flat surfaces even when seen in very large exposures, but are sometimes surfaces of moderate, single, or double curvature. Joint, usually occur in groups, in each of which the several partings are parallel to one another, and several such groups often intersect the same rock-mass. In such cases the different systems make large angles with one another. Nearly all students of the subject of jointing have reached the conclusion that joints are faulted surfaces, the dislocations usually being of small amplitude; and this conclusion receives abundant support from the study of thin sections under the microscope. It has thus been shown that much even of what would be regarded in hand specimens as mere slaty cleavage

It is generally understood by workers in the field of the crystal structure of metallic alloys that terminal solid solutions are of two types, the substitutional and the interstitial. In reviewing the literature, the work of Weissl on the crystal structure of the alpha copper-tin alloys was encountered, in which a new type of terminal solid solution was proposed. In brief, Weiss' findings showed that the density of the alloys calculated from the side of the unit face-centered cube on the assumption of simple substitution—that is, with four atoms to the unit face-centered cell—was much higher than the density measured directly. It was suggested that the assumption of four atoms to the unit cube is not valid for these alloys, and that each unit cube contained less than four atoms; in other words, that one tin atom replaces more than one copper atom, leaving some atomic positions unoccupied. Such a structure, if verified, would have far-reaching significance in the study of the crystal structure of metallic alloys. It would indicate a complexity in terminal solid solutions not hitherto suspected and might encourage work leading to the discovery of other alloys of the same type, and perhaps to types intermediate between it and the two recognized types. It is of importance, therefore, to reinvestigate these alloys with respect to the type of solid-solution structure obtaining therein. Materials and Experimental Method The alloys were prepared from electrolytic copper cut directly from the cathode and the high-purity tin furnished by the U. S. Bureau of Standards for the calibration of thermocouples. No analyses for impurities of these materials or of the finished alloys were made, since such impurities as might be present could have only a wholly inappreciable effect upon the data obtained and the conclusions drawn. The alloys were made by melting the weighed copper charge in a graphite crucible under a KCl-LiC1 flux with later additions of NaC1, using induction heating. The Gaudin-Meloy1 size distribution equation requires the evaluation of two constants, xo and r. The common log-log representation of a screen analysis as cumulative weight percentage passing versus size, readily yields the required constants as illustrated for curves A and B in Fig. 1. The 100% passing (y = 1.0) size is simply x,. If the straight portion of the curve be extrapolated to the 100% passing (y=1.0) abscissa, the intercept is the Schuhmann size modulus, k. The ratio of xo to the size modulus, k, is r as shown: The Gaudin-Meloy equation requires that the slope, a, of the size distribution approach unity in the finer sizes, as is the case for curves A and B. Often distributions are better characterized by slopes other than unity. The schuhmann2 equation is able to represent these distributions if the upper portions of the curves are ignored. Empirically, the Gaudin-Meloy equation can be modified to yield slopes other than unity by writing it as Here, a is the familiar Schuhmann slope, and xo is the 100% passing size. The value of r is still given by Eq. 2. Eq. 4 with its easily determined constants is more versatile than either the Schuhmann or the Gaudin-Meloy equations, since a wide variety of size distributions can be closely described. Deeper drilling, resulting in greater circulating distance and pressure, has directed attention to the advantages of the study of properties and control of rotary muds, which until recently have not had much consideration. One fundamental property of muds is viscosity, and viscosity is influenced by the quantity and character of colloidal material and can be controlled by chemical treatment. Colloidal Matter of Rotary Muds Two types of colloids are found in muds; the hydrophobic and the hydrophilic. Hydrophobic colloids do not associate intimately with water and are sensitive to small quantities of electrolytes. Hydrophilic colloids associate intimately with water, but are not so sensitive to electrolytes. The colloidal particles of rotary muds are derived from clay; In clay the particles may range in size from submicroscopic to macroscopic; a substance is a clay if the greater proportion of the particles are within the size limits prescribed for clay. The larger particles are inert and have no effect on the viscosity of normal hydrophobic colloidal muds. There are two theories accounting for the colloidal properties of clay-water suspensions: (1) the physical theory, that clay in water is a coarse colloidal suspension, and (2) Ashley's1 theory, that clay is a granular material with a colloidal gel surrounding the crystalline grains. The most important colloidal substances known to exist in clays besides the clay particles are: (1) colloidal silica, (2) colloidal alumina, (3) colloidal ferric hydroxide, (4) colloidal silicates, and (5) colloidal organic matter. Plasticity, a peculiar property of clay-water suspensions, is due to the colloidal particles. It is commonly (although not with strict accuracy) measured in terms of viscosity, and depends upon the amount and the state of flocculation of the colloidal matter present in the suspension. Within the last century, and largely during the latter half of it, the increase of our knowledge of the development of man, both in his search for a livelihood and for power, and in the growth of his reason and conscience, has been greater than all we had known before. The great interest in all kinds of archaeological work and the many excavations made of buried and long forgotten places has put at our disposal historical records not available, and in many cases not known before, and a study of these and other records of human progress from paleontological and geological sources has given us a much broader view of what we call "civilization" than was possible even a short time ago. The old idea that men were created with fully developed minds, speech and reason has yielded to the view that in the upward progress of the human race the development of the mind and reason has been a comparatively recent occurrence, as we think of the half million, and probably more, years that have passed since our earliest records of man were made. 296. Definition of Specific Gravity. - The specific gravity of a mineral is the ratio of its density * to that of water at 4' C. (39'2' F.). This relative density may be learned in any case by comparing the ratio of the weight of a certain volume of the given substance to that of an equal volume of water; hence the specific gravity is often defined as: the weight of the body divided by the weight of an equal volume of water. The statement that the specific gravity of graphite is 2, of corundum 4, of galena 7-5, etc., means that the densities of the minerals named are 2; 4, and 7'5, etc., times that of water; in other words, as familiarly expressed, any volume of them, a cubic inch for example, weighs 2 times, 4 times, 7.5 times, etc., as much rn a like volume, a cubic inch, of water. Strictly speaking, since the density of water varies with its expansion or contraction under change of temperature, the comparison should be made with water at a fixed temperature, namely 4' C. (39'2' F.), at which it has its maxi- mum density. If made at a higher temperature, a suitable correction should be introduced by calculation. Practically, however, since a high degree of accuracy is not often called for, and, indeed, in many cases is impracticable to attain in consequence of the nature of the material at hand, in the ordinary work of obtaining the specific gravity of minerals the temperature at which the observation is made can safely be neglected. Common variations of temperature would seldom affect the value of the specific gravity to the extent of one unit in the third decimal place.

The development of solvent extraction processes over recent years has led to their application on an increasing scale in metal extraction plants. The author's company has recently been awarded a contract for the design of the world's largest solvent extraction plant based on pump-mix mixer-settlers. The plant is designed to extract copper from a leach liquor and has an aqueous throughput of 12,000 imperial gpm. The design is based largely upon data obtained from the company's own research laboratories, where work has been undertaken on mixer impeller design, baffle design. settler area, organic entrainment recovery, etc. Investigations have been conducted into the effects of mixer impeller speed, recirculation rates, phase continuity, phase ratio, etc., on extraction efficiency, settler area, and organic entrainment losses. The implications of the results of this work on the design of a large plant using pump-mix mixer-settlers are discussed and the techniques used in overcoming certain scaling problem are outlined.

DURING the past summer the writer was asked by the Illinois State Geological Survey to make a study of some of its economic geological problems with regard to the applicability of geophysical methods of prospecting to their solution. The following four problems were sug-gested for investigation: (1) the fluorspar area of Southern Illinois, (2) oil structures in the south central part of the state, (3) the lead and zinc-bearing area of northwestern Illinois, and (4) the water supply and gravel deposits of the glacial drift. The prime requirements were to find a means of obtaining a maximum of useful information with a fairly modest outlay of expenditure for technical staff and equipment. The method of procedure adopted was that of making a preliminary study of each of the problems named by means of available office data and published reports with supplementary field reconnaissance where necessary.
