The process of froth flotation as a means of upgrading the quality of coal by removing ash/pyrite and of separating selected mineral(s) from undesired gangue materials is certainly one of the most common unit engineering operations in use today. Flotation has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for well over 50 years, and if anything, its use is increasing due to the ever decreasing feed grades of the coals and minerals being processed. Flotation, as a process, has also shown itself to be an extremely flexible process that lends itself well to a wide variety of solid/solid separations. Thus separations can involve very different particle sizes, particle densities, relative weight ratios of materials to be separated, etc., with surprisingly little modification in equipment and operating philosophy required.

You’ve probably encountered one of those kids who think they know best despite a lack of any real experience.Hi, my name is Erica, and I am a Millennial. We often get a bad rap, sometimes for good reason. But we do have qualities that are often overlooked. For example, I am happy to share with my generation a real desire to make a difference in the world and a commitment to innovation. Does this mean I think we always have good ideas? No – especially not right away. After all, few of us came anywhere near a piece of construction equipment until arriving for our first job, as was the case for me. We may have fancy degrees, but not many of us learned to run a jackleg drill in school.Two weeks after graduating college in 2011, I packed up my bags and moved to New York City to work as a field engineer for Traylor Bros. Inc. on the Queens Bored Tunnels project (Granite/Traylor /Frontier Kemper, JV), part of NYC MTA’s multi-billion dollar Long Island Railroad East Side Access project. It was here I became acquainted with the notorious New York City union workers. Perhaps the greatest challenge of my career thus far was earning the respect of the field supervision and craft workers on this first project.The first time I asked a maintenance mechanic to clean a piece of equipment in accordance with our maintenance protocol I got a flat-out “No.” It was the most powerless I had ever felt. But why should these experienced workers trust a 21-year-old girl with her civil engineering degree and no prior experience? I realized no employee on the job had any reason to listen to me — not until I proved my worth. Fortunately, I arrived on the job site just as we were commissioning the slurry plant for the first tunnel drive. I dove into learning as much about the slurry tunneling process as possible and was able to quickly pick up the ins and outs of running the slurry separation plant. As none of the other engineers or management had first-hand experience on a slurry tunneling job, I soon became the go-to engineer in the slurry plant. No one questioned me if I asked to have something done around the plant after that, or if they did, they quickly learned that I had a convincing answer as to the need for the task. I was even able to play a large role in shaping our slurry monitoring and control methodology."

Coal in most refuse ponds including those owned by Consolidation Coal Company can be recovered by froth flotation techniques. Laboratory studies show that the flotation conditions required for coal recovery varied greatly from pond to pond. The variables found to be most important for high coal recovery and low product ash were: a) the amount and type of flotation reagents and b) the degree of conditioning before flotation. Coal recovery at a rate of 0.504 kg/s (2 tons/hr) was demonstrated at a pond site employing a mobile froth flotation unit.

While we have occasionally discovered and recorded asphaltite in metalliferous deposits, for example in the Joplin and Granby districts, we have not seen a metallic ore in a deposit eesentially asphaltite. The source and method of introduction afford a subject well worth serious reflection.

"Novel silicate-alginate composite beads containing 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2- ethylhexyl ester (P507) were synthesized and applied for the adsorption of Nd3+ from aqueous solutions. The adsorption amount of Nd3+ has been increased owing to the introduction of P507. The effect of equilibrium pH (pHe), the kinetic and isotherm experiments were investigated. The adsorption reaches equilibrium at 9 h and the maximum uptake capacity is up to 195.4 mg/(g dry adsorbent). The Langmuir isotherm equations are used to describe the adsorption process. Complete desorption can be realized with 0.2 M HCl within 20 min. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REEs) have found various applications in different domains, such as metallurgy industry, ceramic industry, nuclear fuel control, photo-electro-magnetic functional materials owing to their unique properties. Neodymium (Nd), as a representative of all of the most valuable REEs, is widely used as catalysts, laser crystals, capacitors, rubber additives, Nd-Fe-B magnets, hydrogen storage and so on. Thus, the separation and purification of neodymium is significant. Unfortunately, Nd always coexists with other REEs and selective separation of the individual Nd from the REEs mixtures is still extremely difficult owing to their strictly similar atomic structures and chemical properties.Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and solid-liquid adsorption (SLA) are the most widely adopted techniques for the separation of REEs in the hydrometallurgical fields. The LLE process is well suited for large-scale continuous operation because of its inherent high capacity and fast kinetics. Nowadays, as a commercial extractant, 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) has been extensively studied for extraction and separation of REEs since it has considerably good extractability and high separation efficiency (Xu et al., 1992). SLA is one of the effective and green separation methods with some prominent advantages, such as easy regeneration of adsorbents, small footprint size, less industrial wastes, higher enrichment factors and column efficiency,rapid solid–liquid separation without emulsion and so on. Hence, the introduction of extractants with excellent performance into adsorbents will integrate the advantages of LLE and SLA (Lee et al., 2009)."

"Al-Sc Alloys have showed many advanced properties for a wide range of industrial application, which is usually produced using thermal reduction process. This work is aimed to develop an electrochemical process to make Al-Sc alloy using industrial Hall aluminum reduction cells. The experiments have been carried out in a lab cell where NaF/AlF3-Al2O3-LiF as electrolyte, Sc2O3 as raw material, and liquid aluminum as cathode were used at operating temperature of 950 °C. The resulting Al contained 0.2 - 0.5 wt.% Sc that is the common range in its content for advanced applications. However, a small fraction of Sc was found from thermal reduction at Al melts interface. SEM-EDS and ICP-AES analysis showed a uniformed distribution of Sc at varying locations of the Al-Sc alloy sample. In addition, a higher Sc content in Al-Sc alloy can be obtained with introducing ultrasound through the cathode than that without it.IntroductionIn recent years, scandium has been investigated as an alloying element for aluminum alloys. With addition of a small amount of Sc, Al alloys can improve the strength, weld ability, resistance to re-crystallization and corrosion resistance [1-3]. Due to their advanced properties and potential applications, the demand for Al-Sc alloys will increase in the future. However, the difficulties in reduction technologies and the high costs in production process may limit their expansion in application areas.The current major method of producing Al-Sc alloys is to mix Sc into Al by melting Al-Sc master alloy. This alloying process has several technical problems, such as easy segregating and heavy burning loss, etc. The price of Sc metal or starting material is also high, so the mixing process is an expensive alloying method. Molten salt electrolysis is alternative method to prepare RE metal and RE alloys [4, 5]. It also can reduce the segregation of alloying elements. Sc2O3 is an ideal material as raw material with low price and decomposition voltage. Some work has proved that Al-Sc alloys can be obtained by electrolysis Sc2O3 directly in cryolite [6-8], or CaCl2 molten salt [9]."

"Function of High Pressure Roll Grinding (HPRG) in production of oxidized pellets from magnetite concentrate as raw material was systematically studied. It was found that bentonite dosage decreased from 1.3% to 0.8% if specific surface area of magnetite concentrate pretreated by HPRG was up to 2553.41cm2.g-1. The green ball quality improved obviously due to the increase of specific surface area and fine particles content, and the improvements of size distribution and the ballability of pretreated materials. However, the decrease of pellet porosity accelerated the primary solid phase reaction and oxidation reaction, which made the pellets surface form compacted layer that handicapped the diffusion and migration of oxygen, promoting the formation of double layer structure of finished pellet. Consequently, the compression strength of preheated and roasted pellets was not markedly improved by HPRG.IntroductionWith the increase of proportion of pellets in the BF recently, the technical-economic index of BF has obviously been improved. Consequently, the production and the quality of BF pellet are given more attention [1]. However, with the decrease of the quality of iron ore concentrate, the problems such as poor ballability, high bentonite dosage, high preheating and roasting temperature are becoming the great challenges to not only the quality of finished pellets, but also the energy consumption [2, 3]. In order to overcome these problems, mechanical pretreating technologies such as the High Pressure Roll Grinding (HPRG) and Damp-grinding are widely applied. HPRG has a number of advantages such as low energy consumption, high productivity and easy-maintaining. It is more economic and environmentally friendly than the Damp-grinding technology [4, 5]. A great number of experiments have revealed that HPRG can improve the quality of hematite pellets. Although there are some studies of function of HPRG in the magnetite oxidized pellet production, they are not comprehensive and systematic, especially to the preheating and roasting system [1, 2, 6, 7]. Accordingly, the influence of HPRG on the pelletizing system and the preheating and roasting system are systematically studied in production of magnetite oxidized pellets in this article."

THE opening session of the Institute was held at Hazle Hall, Tuesday evening, October 27th, with a large attendance of members. President Raymond called the Institute to order, and after a few introductory remarks, introduced Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, President of the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain, and Honorary Member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Mr. Bell was received with great applause, and made his acknowledgments in a brief speech, of which the following is the substance: He desired to thank the Institute personally for the honor conferred upon him in his election to membership, and also for the invitation extended last year to the body of which he was President. The difficulty felt by many members of the Iron and Steel Institute, of leaving for a long journey the works of which they had charge, aggravated by special industrial troubles at the time of the invitation, had obliged them to conclude that it could not then be accepted in a fitting manner. The iron manufacture of this country is a subject of great interest to Englishmen, who look with pride upon the achievements on this side the water of the descendants of a common ancestry. His own reception in this country had far surpassed in cordiality even the well-grounded anticipations he had formed from the assurances of the President and other friends. Notwithstanding the flattering manner in which his friend, in introducing him to the Institute, had spoken of his contributions to the science of iron metallurgy, he could not take to himself alone the significance of this welcome. He knew it was a recognition of the services rendered by the body which he had the honor to represent; and he was glad to see present a member of that body, Mr. Thomas Whitwell, who had fortunately been able to make the journey at this time, and whom he had had the pleasure of meeting on the shores of Lake Champlain. "Mechanical alloying (MA) synthesizing technology and thennohydrogen processing (THP) were utilized to produce nanocrystalline Ti-MMC's reinforced by TiB intermetallic compound by using TiH2-B powder mixtures. Powders MA'ed up to 8 hours were examined by X-ray diffraction and SEM study. All MA'ed powders afterwards were HIP'ed at 700, 800 and 950EC for 1 hour. Detailed XRD, SEM and TEM study of the samples were carried out to determine the structure and micrography of the Ti-TiB MMC material processed by MA+THP approach followed by HIP'ing at high temperatures.IntroductionThe fiber reinforced titanium base composites [1,2] which possess a great resistance to high temperature have been investigated. In these studies fibers of C and SiC were used as reinforcing materials. However, these fibers react with Ti-matrix at elevated temperature resulting in product formation at the interface between the matrix and the fiber. Because of the chemical reactions, strength of the product MMC material diminishes.In conventional techniques of whisker reinforced composite material production, the mixtures of matrix metal powders and dispersed fibers are consolidated by hot pressing, HIP and/or hot extrusion. These techniques, however, have some shortcomings. Hard and brittle fibers could be broken during mixing cycle of the processing. Consolidation techniques could also be the cause for fiber breakdown. Attaining of the uniform dispersion of fibers into the metal matrix is not an easy process. The chemical reactions at elevated temperature exposures in the interface between the matrix material and fiber reinforcement cause product formations leading to poor mechanical properties."

The large-scale vibrating screens with high processing capacity and efficiency are now in great demand in the mineral processing industry of China. However, as the equipment is always suffering from the strong external harmonic exciting force, the inertial force and the impact from the minerals, the fracture of the beam and the crack of the lateral plate are easy to occur, which has a negative effect on the reliability of the equipment itself and the industrial production. Considering the essential high reliability of the equipment, a new large-scale vibrating screen with duplex statically indeterminate mesh beam structure (VSDSIMBS) was developed. The natural characteristics, namely, the natural frequency (or the modal frequencies) and the natural mode, and the dynamic characteristics of the VSDSIMBS were obtained by the modal analysis and the harmonic response analysis. In addition, the dimensions and the constructions of the statically indeterminate plate and the mesh beam were chosen as the design parameters, to which the sensitivity of the whole mass, the maximum deformation and the maximum stress of the duplex statically indeterminate mesh beam structure (DSIMBS) were summarized for the optimization of the DSIMBS. Now the large-scale VSDSIMBS is being well used in China.

The TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyzer (TIMA), an automated mineralogy system, enables fast and quantitative mineral analyses of rocks, ores, concentrates, tailings, leach residues or smelter products. It combines BSE and EDX analysis for identification and measurement of mineral concentrations, particle size distribution, and liberation/locking parameters. In addition, it can provide bright particle searches for PGM, gold-silver ores, and/or REE. With the newly developed Automated Loading System (AutoLoader), the TIMA has become the world?s first automated mineral analyzer which permits robust, continuous and unattended sample loading. With the AutoLoader (robotics) system, the TIMA has emerged as a powerful plant support instrument. It increases the sample throughput, minimizes manual labor and enables 24/7 operations. As such, it can be used in daily, continuous mineralogy for mine geology/ore control, concentrators, leach operations, and smelter support. It will also increase the capabilities of technical service centers for mining companies, commercial laboratories, large drilling programs or pilot test campaigns. In combination with a highly automated sample preparation lab (sizing, potting and polishing), TIMA technology can establish high-throughput and fast-turnaround automated mineralogy lab modules for mine-site production support.

Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation's newest precious metals property is located in the old Rochester Mining District approximately twenty-five miles northeast of Lovelock, Nevada. Built at an elevation in excess of 6 000 feet, the Coeur-Rochester gold silver heap leach property encountered cold weather operational problems typical of most northern Nevada heap leach properties, soon after the start-up of operations last fall. Due to the size of the heap area under leach at Rochester, it was decided that 1 the usual practice of spraying to an "ice field" and waiting for the spring thaw was impractical. Further, the delivery schedule for a solution heating system of the size required was unacceptable. Accordingly, Rochester personnel embarked on a program to seek out a leach solution distribution system that would enable an operation through the winter and yet be cost effective. The findings of this program were rather dramatic and, as a result, the whole perception of heap leach solution application at Rochester has changed forever.

It is proposed to consider here only comparisons made between results obtained when the materials employed are precisely the same, two furnaces at the same works for example, or the same furnace under different conditions as respects temperature of blast, method of charging, etc. With this limitation, the most important point in the comparison is the amount of fuel consumed per ton of iron. This, in fact, is the only item in the prime cost of the iron which can properly be said to vary in consequence of changes in the furnace process; for of the other principal items, the ore used per ton of iron, and also the amount of fluxing material, will depend on its richness, which, under the assumed conditions, will be practically invariable when taken over any considerable period; the labor cost also, from its nature, should be very nearly constant when estimated on the ton of iron. One of the first important questions that should be settled on the opening of a mine or the development of a new deep is the system of haulage to be used, since the layout of the haulage-ways at the pit bottom, or, in case of a slope mine, the arrangement of the surface works, depends largely upon the type selected. Should it later become desirable to install a system of haulage of a type other than that for which the mine roadways were originally laid out, considerable difficulty would likely be encountered in its installation and with the result that it would in all probability be most unsatisfactory and expensive in its operations. It therefore becomes very necessary that full consideration be given the haulage problem at an early date in order that the type best suited to the mine conditions and the required outputs can be intelligently planned for. It is sometimes found, however, that no matter how well the mining engineer explores the seam to be developed, or how accurately he anticipates its eccentricities, there will still remain some unrevealed or unsuspected conditions, or shall we say obstacles, placed by Nature to prevent the too easy winning of her treasures and incidentally to frustrate or modify the application of the plan so painstakingly laid down on paper, and to adversely affect the cost estimate.

Are the results of an exploration program worth the cost? This is a question I suspect many of you are familiar with and, theoretically at least, it is an easy question to answer. The answer, of course, lies in comparing the future earnings stream the program is expected to generate, to the present value of the cost of carrying it out. While historical costs can be determined without much difficulty, estimating the value of a future earnings stream involves all sorts of assumptions regarding future costs, metal prices, inflation rates and an appropriate discount factor; and in the context in which the question arises, requires additional assumptions about mineral deposits which have yet to be discovered. As a practical matter, this kind of approach isn't likely to produce a very convincing answer; certainly not one convincing enough to satisfy a skeptical audience; nor one likely to temper the illusions of recent converts to mineral exploration, who are convinced that if enough money is spent, profitable discoveries will inevitably follow. Within broad limits, however, I believe it is possible to analyze the costs and results of gold exploration in the U.S.A. over the past 20 odd years in a useful manner. And while such an analysis is imperfect, it will provide some insight into this fascinating subject.

Selective flotation to separate copper minerals from, for example, Mo- and/or As-bearing minerals is a continuing problem because the selectivity of current systems is imperfect. Selective Cu-As flotation is currently difficult, and the most common Cu-Mo selective flotation method uses NaHS; this must be done in an enclosed system because, under acidic conditions, this method produces hydrogen sulfide. In this paper, some novel alternative flotation processes that use redox reactions are discussed; these methods have a much lower environmental impact. Oxidation and reduction reactions can be used to make copper minerals more hydrophilic and Mo-bearing minerals more hydrophobic. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses indicated that the copper minerals became hydrophilic because hydrophilic iron precipitated and several hydroxides covered the copper minerals’ surfaces, whereas the molybdenum minerals remained hydrophobic because their sulfide surfaces were not covered. Flotation experiments on these minerals after redox treatments indicated that excellent separation of Cu-minerals from Mo-minerals can be achieved. Possible mechanisms for this separation were investigated using detailed surface analyses and thermodynamic calculations. The additives used to initiate the redox reactions are easy to handle and make these new flotation procedures better than current processes because the new methods do not emit effluent gas and because they are commercially viable. "The situation of the Ti-V-Magnetite samples reduced with microwave has been investigated in laboratory. Firstly, the paper focuses on the heating behaviors of vanadium-titanium magnetite and characteristics of carbothermic reduction of V-Ti-magnetite in the microwave field. The effect of concentrate's size, quality on heating behaviors and reduction processes were researched. Results show that microwave heating may be a new heating resource replace of carbonic combustion reaction in reducing reaction. When the allocation of carbon is (16.7-30)%, carbothermic reduction of V-Ti-magnetite in the microwave field can proceed; with the increasing of carbon mixed, the metallization rate increases; and Fe, V can be reduced from their oxides in the microwave field; Titanic low oxide can be reduced from TiO2.1. IntroductionThe resource of Ti-V-Magnetite is abundant in the western area of Panzhihua in China, so far a mineral deposit of 4.64 billion tons have been proved up, it contains 14.75 million tons of V2O S which accounted for 87% of the vanadium and 5.93 hundred million tons of TiO2 accounted for 94% of the titanium resource respectively in China. The previous study proved that the major composition of mineral of the Ti-V-magnetite are Ti-magnetite, limonite, iron spinel, magnesium spinel etc, and the main elements of the Ti-V-magnetite in this area are Fe, Ti, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Ga, Sc etc[1] Due to the restrict of the BF-BOF process technical, during the smelting of the iron, the level of extracting the vanadium, titanium as well as other metal elements is limited. This results serious wasting of resources. To develop a new reduction process of Ti-V-magnetite is on the agenda, the microwave assistant reduction could meets this need, based on its characteristic of easy controlling of heating rate. To make use of the microwave energy to substitute the released heat sources of carbon combustion with air, use the solid phase state reduction at a relative lower temperature, make the beneficial element in Ti-V-magnetite transferred into the metal phase, then separated from the impurity. It is well worth to point out that once the microwave based reduction method has its industrial scale, it will take an outstanding position by its less release of carbon dioxide. This new environment-friendly process will play a vital role in the development of social industry and economy."

"Thanks in great part to the geology of the New York City Metropolitan area, mini-caissons are a popular choice for deep foundations. These drilled elements are readily available, easy to install with minimal impact on adjacent structures, and can be designed with large compressive and tensile capacities. Despite the frequency with which they are employed, the engineering design community is divided over several of the underlying principles governing the design of mini-caissons. This paper seeks to draw attention to several of these issues in an effort to encourage further research and discussion, namely: (1) how the allowable stresses have changed for the NYC Building Code over time, (2) the inconsistent load transfer mechanisms considered for geotechnical capacity, and (3) the role of the permanent steel casing towards structural capacities of mini-caissons.INTRODUCTIONIn the local construction nomenclature, mini-caissons are drilled deep foundation elements which derive their capacity from a socket in rock. A permanent steel casing (commonly between 7- and 24-inches in diameter) aides the drilling through overburden soils to the top of bedrock. Afterwards, an uncased rock socket is drilled into the bedrock and the inside of the casing and rock socket is inspected by means of portable video equipment. After inspection, the interior of the socket and casing is filled with steel reinforcement and concrete or grout. The casing-soil interface is generally ignored for axial design purposes and the full geotechnical compressive or tensile capacity is assumed to be generated in the rock socket. Figure 1 shows a typical mini-caisson cross section.Mini-caissons have been used for decades in the New York City area for a number of reasons. They have historically been proven to develop high axial capacities in the city’s metamorphic rock (Tamaro et. al. 2000), often exceeding 300- to 500-tons. Additionally, their method of installation (drilling) is generally able to bypass layers of dense Glacial Till, boulders, and manmade fill which would interfere with the installation of other pile types (e.g. driven piles, auger cast piles). Further they are able to extend to depths exceeding 50-ft to reach bedrock underlying a site, making them a useful tool in areas where rock is relatively deep or varied in elevation. Drilled casing installation also results in fewer vibrations and disturbances to adjacent structures and can occur in areas of restricted access (a constant concern for any project in a dense urban environment such as NYC)."
