"AMD is one of the main problems associated with mining activities and the techniques used in their treatment may be the biosorption. The aim of this work was to study the rice husk as a biosorbent for the AMD treatment keeping constant: pH (2.6), biomass concentration (1g.L-1), temperature (25°C) and agitation (175rpm). And varying the contact time of 5, 20, 60 and 240 minutes. Rice husk samples will be characterized before and after the biosorptives tests through analysis of SEM and IR. The micrographs indicate the occurrence of micro-precipitation and changes in biomass physical structure. Since the infrared spectra indicate changes in functional groups present in the biomass before and after the biosorptives tests. AMD synthetic solutions will be analyzed by ICP in order to quantify the metals concentration captured by biomassIntroductionThe preoccupation for the environment has led the industry in general, to treat their waste. As the only industrial activity is increasing, the pollutants generated must undergo treatment processes aimed at reducing pollution, and therefore, less aggression ecosystems.In mining there is waste water with accumulation of heavy metals, and these are harmful to health of living beings, thus being one of those industries responsible for some pollution of the environment. These wastewater in contact with oxygen to generate an acidic water is called acid mine drainage (AMD). This aqueous solution has a pH below 3 and varieties of dissolved metals. When this solution comes in contact with water, generates a series of environmental problems, so there is a need to recover the metals present in the DAM."

Today’s world relies upon advanced green technologies that are made of critical elements with unique properties. Examples include rare earth elements (REEs) that are critical in the manufacturing of wind turbines and electric/hybrid vehicle batteries, key components of a greener future that face supply uncertainty and near zero recycling. To tackle their supply challenges, activities have begun for urban mining from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) that contain considerable amount of REEs, but their current level of recycling is less than 1%. Current recycling practices use either pyrometallurgy, which is energy intensive, or hydrometallurgy that utilizes large volumes of acids and solvents and generates large volumes of hazardous waste. In this study, we developed a novel and sustainable process to recycle REEs from WEEE, NiMH batteries in particular. The developed process relies on supercritical fluid extraction (SCFE) utilizing CO2 as the solvent, which is abundant, safe, cost effective, and inert. The effect of seven operating parameters, namely temperature, pressure, residence time, sample to chelating agent ratio, agitation rate, complex formulation, and methanol addition on REE extraction efficiency was investigated, and optimum operating conditions were determined. This work is the first to utilize a very efficient and safe process that runs at low temperature to extract metals from postconsumer products with minimum hazardous waste generation, while offering about 90% leaching efficiency for REEs. We expect our process to find widespread applicability in urban mining of REEs using green chemistry.

Considerable efforts have been expended to apply multiple regression techniques to quantitative determinations in x-ray fluorescence analysis. Multiple regression has been shown to be an effective method for correlating x-ray fluorescence intensities to elemental concentrations. Although many other techniques have been devised to solve the problem of matrix effects in x-ray fluorescence analysis, there are few as efficient in terms of storage requirement or ease of programming for digital computers as the multiple regression method. In the case of ore slurry, it has the additional advantage of allowing a unified approach to the problems of slurry density correction and matrix effect corrections. The data used in the present work were obtained with an on-stream x-ray analyzer capable of analyzing 15 slurry streams for as many as nine elements simultaneously. One of its fixed monochromators was set to accept scattered radiation at a discretely selected wavelength as a means of monitoring the slurry's pulp density. The data were reduced to obtain the correlation equations and a computer program combining slurry density with matrix corrections was written in FORTRAN IV to calculate concentrations.

This subject is too broad and comprehensive to be dealt with adequately and authoritatively in this paper. It calls for the knowledge and experience of many men, but the results from such collaborative effort would be of great value, particularly if similar reports of the principal mining districts of the world were made on a standardized basis so that conditions everywhere might be directly and accurately compared. In considering conditions affecting mining in British Columbia, unfavourable as well as favourable factors must be taken into account. The unfavourable are apt to loom large and to be exaggerated rather than minimized; for it is human nature to see the blackness of the cloud rather than the silver lining; to think that one's own undertaking is beset with peculiar difficulties, and to attribute lack of greater success to out-side causes rather than to personal shortcomings. It should be recognized, however, that there is no country where the conditions for mining are ideal. The ideal mining country is the product of imagination, invested with every favourable condition found anywhere, but with none of the unfavourable conditions that are always present in reality. So if British Columbia has some handicaps to the industry, it is in good company. What is important is that the advantages compensate for the disadvantages, that the balance will compare favorably with that of competing states, for mining, like every other industry is competitive, and the cost of one's product must have a definite relationship to its price in the world's market.

In narrow orebodies the use of ordinary kriging (OK) may pose certain limitations when used for grade control modelling. The smoothing effect of kriging, by its very nature, cannot retain or accurately characterise the dispersion (variability) that is inherent in gold deposits. This dispersion is a critical component of determining the desired level of ore loss and dilution.Fixed block model positions used in OK, and all estimation approaches, within a grade control process may never align with the ‘true’ ore boundary. This may lead to excessive ore loss and dilution, especially within narrow lodes.Using a risk-based approach to ore block design based on the geostatistical method of conditional simulation (CS) can highlight the differences achieved when an alternative method to OK is used for grade control modelling. By using a mesh of nodes and the application of a ‘transfer function’ to the simulation models, the position for ore contacts can be better assessed than when using fixed blocks in OK. Therefore, the value of various ore block boundaries can be better analysed by objective assessment of ore loss and dilution for a given minimum mining selectivity (selective mining unit or SMU), even in narrow lodes.A case study of a narrow vein gold deposit, comparing the results from an OK model and a CS model shows that whilst both models show similar trends – waste, low-grade, and high-grade regions are the same in both cases – the simulation model can provide greater insight for optimal definition of the mineralisation boundary.CITATION:Haylett, M E, Weeks, A, Matthews, G D and Khosrowshahi, S, 2014. The development and maintenance of underground roadways are increasingly important aspects of the modern mining process. With the trend toward automation and track-less mining, roadbeds capable of with standing increased wheel loading have proven necessary to maintain high vehicle speed and reduced maintenance costs. Concrete has been used successfully on some roadways in order to obtain the required characteristics. However, this solution usually involves unacceptable expense. The objective of the Road Router project was to create a drift floor profiling machine capable of cutting a smooth surface out of the existing rock floor of development drifts and ramps. This surface would provide a durable, high strength, low rolling resistance roadbed that would allow for reduced operating cycle times and lower maintenance costs of scoops and haulage trucks. The Road Router has the potential to offer an alternative to concrete with substantial cost savings.

The respirable dust real-time monitoring equipment export information is complex, and electromagnetic wave wireless transmission is affected largely under mine conditions. The respirable dust concentration information transmission method based on led light equipment is proposed. The respirable dust concentration data of the individual real-time monitoring equipment is encoded to fit the system transmission; the encoded signal is modulated onto the LED mine lamp; the light signal is transmitted by the spatial channel; the signal is received by the receiver to the photoelectric conversion to restore the respirable dust concentration data for subsequent processing. Simulation and verification experiments showed that the respirable dust concentration information transmission method based on led light equipment can achieve the LED miners? lamps visible light wireless data transmission.

We are regularly told that before making a new investment one should seek the advice of his banker. If we were to place the subject matter of this paper before bankers. other than those who have experience in our mining camps, their reply would probably be evasive. However, if for example: a mining company asks them for a loan and offers as security certain mining investments, they are, in most cases, explosively candid. The idea is preposterous, unless, under Section 88 of the Bank Act, the mining company is able to deposit with the bank, gold or silver bullion, to an amount sufficiently in excess of the loan, to provide for what the banker describes as a reasonable margin of safety in case of contingencies. In addition the directors of the mine personally must jointly and severally guarantee payment of the loan. With any of these conditions missing the banking atmosphere becomes chilly. The local manager explains that the general situation, and particularly European conditions, are so unsettled that head office has warned him that his discretionary powers must not be exceeded under any circumstances.

"Mineral flotation processes are often characterized by long dead times and slow process dynamics. The process dynamics change due to different ore types, feed grades and circulating loads. These are some of the factors that can make control of flotation processes difficult. Implementation of adaptive control algorithms at Brunswick Mining has made controlling these processes feasible. The role of adaptive controllers in plant optimization and the overall control philosophy is discussed.IntroductionBrunswick Mining is located just outside of Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada. The concentrator processes approximately 10,250 tonnes per day of ore that assays at approximately 8.9 %Zn, 3.6 %Pb, 0.3 %Cu and 100 gram/tonne of Ag. The four products produced are zinc concentrate assaying 51 %Zn, lead concentrate assaying 36 %Pb, copper concentrate assaying 21 %Cu, and a bulk concentrate assaying 32 %Zn and 18 %Pb.The original flotation process control system, supplied by Outokompu Oy of Finland, was replaced in the summer of 1988 by a Provox system supplied by Fisher Controls Inc. The Provox system consists of two redundant integrated function controllers (IFC's), two operator console stations with two screens each and a Digital Equipment Co. microVax II computer running Fisher's Computer Highway Interface Package (CHIP).In January 1989 a boiler management package, which includes the boiler control hardware and another operator's console, will be added to the Provox system. In late spring of 1989, a Vax 3200 computer running G2 artificial intelligence software from Gensym Corporation will be installed. These devices are all connected using a redundant data highway that runs around the plant.The primary measurement devices in the flotation circuit are two Courier on-stream X-ray analyzers. The Courier systems each have 14 sample cells with two streams multiplexed into each cell. Each pass of the on-stream head takes approximately 6 minutes yielding a nominal sampling interval of 12 minutes. The Courier passes its assays to its respective IFC. The IFC handles the digital and analog I/O, DDC and cascade loop control, some low level calculations and sequencing. The CHIP microVax has 9MB of memory and 220MB of mass storage running under the VMS operating system. The CHIP microVax is a central database for the Provox system. It is used for data trending, metallurgical modelling and balancing, instrumentation database, long term storage, and on-line adaptive assay control."

"UNTIL the last few years, the collieries of the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, while highly mechanized as to the cutting and transportation of the coal, still relied on the hand-loading of coal from the seam onto face conveyors. In these circumstances it was possible to assure that no large proportion of extraneous materials would be loaded with the coal, and the product could be quite well cleaned for the market by screening and hand-picking.Within the past few years, however, the Company has introduced an intensive programme of mechanization which will result in the virtual elimination of hand-loading .of coal. It has been the experience of other producers that mechanical loading inevitably leads to a very large increase in the amount of impurities in the product. This is occasioned by the fact that, at least up to the present, all types of loading machines have relied on the coal being broken from the seam by under-cutting and shooting. In this operation, a certain amount of roof and pavement material inevitably becomes mixed with the coal and, since selective loading is impossible with a loading machine, all this foreign material is loaded out with the product."

"INTRODUCTION Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.5 million tons of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this paper and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW Peña Colorada is a mining company which produces about 30% of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in the location map below:TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS Most mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore”. Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that unlocked significant project value in many aspects of the mine plan. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. There are several alternating terminological combinations such as "in situ mining", "borehole mining", "shaftless mining", "mineless mining", "geotechnology" etc.; specific terms denote particular method of unconventional mining technology: "underground coal gasification in situ", "underground coal combustion in situ", "borehole hydraulic coal mining" and others. "Industry generally has become noise-conscious and is realizing that damage to the human ear is expected to become more costly than any other compensation. Noise control has been recognized as a necessity and, fifteen years ago, in co-operation among different countries, inter-national organizations were set up to co-ordinate measures against dangerous noise and the development of silencing devices began. Rock drills for underground operations were particularly scrutinized because of the explosive nature of the noise developing from air escaping from exhaust. This paper describes the results and the present stage of development in the reduction and control of noise on rock drills, with special application to their use in mines."

The absence of coal face particle management practices heavily penalizes coal transportation from initial loading to final consumption. Penalties include dust problems, significantly reduced mine loading cycle productivity, mine belt spillage, excessively high coal preparation costs and chute and dangerous pulverizer blockages at the final point of utilization. The common environmental and economic enemy is fines. Everyone knows that fines cause safety and environmental dust problems, but few understand that fines also swell broken coal to a point where 5 to 15 percent more time and capacity must be used to deliver the same tonnage. In this paper, methods and rewards for reducing and/or managing fines at the mine face are discussed. Computer-based loading cycle model productivity estimates, viewed from a new perspective, are made on the basis of material volume rather than on the long established and frequently misleading basis of tonnage. After all, it is typically the volume of broken material being transported that defines the capacity of a given transportation system, while the corresponding tonnages are merely a reflection of the specific material densities. Published evidence suggests that the swelling of broken coal can be decreased very significantly using small quantities of certain non-frothing chemicals added to mine face spray water and/or by employing improved mine face breakage practices. In a future paper, the effects on transportation productivity beyond the coal mine will be discussed.

Mining has played a significant role in human development and without the mining sector, society would not enjoy a large number of the benefits that it does today. However, mining has also carried with it some important lessons, which remain the source of ongoing learning. One of these lessons is the poor closure or abandonment of mines, worldwide. This has in many cases resulted in large tracts of unproductive land, representing a source of environmental pollution and a safety hazard to the community. Frequently associated with this is a legacy of mining communities having fallen into economic and social decline, beyond mine closure.Due to this legacy, governments, society and the mining sector pay far greater attention to mine closure planning today, than was done in the past. Typically closure planning has focused on the engineering aspects of a mine, namely decommissioning of the workings and plant; dismantling of unusable infrastructure; and rehabilitation of disturbed land. These are important aspects of closure but a more holistic, long-term approach is required which encompasses environmental and social aspects and aims to leave a positive legacy behind.In planning for a mine closure scenario with a lasting positive legacy, it is critical that the broader receiving environments (social, economic, physical and biological) within which a mine is located, define and drive the closure plan and the mine planning as a whole. This ensures that the broader environment influences mine closure, as opposed to looking at how a closed mine will impact on the environment. The ultimate aim is to first understand the broader environment and then to fit the closure of a mine into it. The earlier this approach is followed in the life of a mine, the greater the operational time frame available, and hence a better chance is presented for planning and managing a mine towards the desired, tested and agreed post closure scenario. Within this broad context, there is tremendous scope to achieve successful mine closure. However, it is critical to note that mine closure is not the sole responsibility of the mining companies, and neither is it possible for said mining companies to achieve mining closure alone. This concerted effort requires a multi-stakeholder approach in which partnerships are created and risks, responsibilities and opportunities are shared and managed. To achieve sustainable closure, a multi-stakeholder approach based on an initial forward-looking closure vision is required. This approach provides an early basis for consideration of alternative land uses and economic options from which specific actions to achieve the preferred option can be defined. The Anglo American plc Mine Closure Toolbox has been formulated and developed around this concept. The Toolbox aims to expand mine closure planning - from financial provisioning for rehabilitation and physical closure, to planning for sustainability beyond mine closure and leaving behind a positive legacy.This paper focuses on the business case for mine closure planning and provides an overview of the Anglo American plc (AAplc) Mine Closure Toolbox.CITATION:Botha, P R, 2012. A unique freeze conditioning agent (FCA) which functions by forming structurally weak ice rather than suppressing the freezing point of water has been successful in alleviating frozen coal problems. Frozen coal treated with FCA has been quickly unloaded at temperatures below -17.SoC (O°F). Other areas where FCA has found utility has been de-icing conveyor belts, idler, idler arms and other moving parts that have been impeded by ice.

"In ordinary manufacture process of tungsten powder, a preferable intermediate product used is ammonium paratungstate (APT). The particle size of tungten powder made from it through W2OO58 is larger than 1. 0 um. In order to obtain ultrafine tungsten powder with narrow size distribution, a new type of tungstate, hydraziniull tungstate, was studied. Its formula is 5(N2H5)2O·12 WO.s , with tetragonal crystal structure of a=5.821 , c=18. 468. Three methods for preparing hydrazinium tungstate (ART) were set up and ART can be produced by current industrial APT process with little modification of operation and without any change of equipment.Under certain PH and operation condition of the solution from which ART was produced, an autoreduction of tungsten occured, which produced a lower valency tungstate with blue color when ART was heated at different temperatures, in N atmosphere, tungsten bronze, tetragonal W0290 and W02.7E could be obtained respectively. They all have the superiorities, in the production of tungsten powder, of superfine size and narrow size distribution [average size of 0.5um or even smaller.The rate of autoreduction of ART is very fast at elevated temperature. The reduction reaction, which gaves tetragonal WO290, could be handled smoothly without explosion. To research their behaviors at autoreduction temperatures and the products of autoreduction will be new advances of tungsten chemistry and may also serve tungsten industry with new processes and materials."

The arrival of Image analysis in the last 20 years has changed the world of quantitative metallography. Many standard measurement techniques which were previously manual can now be done with fully automated systems. This reduces subjectivity and operator fatigue and therefore enhances the quality of the statistical results. In many laboratories, Titanium Alloy microstructures continue to be evaluated by traditional methods, where quality of results is subject to operator fatigue and level of experience. Advances in Camera technology have tremendously improved image acquisition. One can often see clearly at 500x what can not be observed at 1000x, allowing for a larger area to be analyzed, without the inconveniences associated with very high magnification objectives. Powerful and versatile Image analysis software combined with a high precision motorized stage gives access to a multitude of applications, which were extremely challenging or impossible until now. Image Analysis tools such as Multilayer Grab, which reconstructs an uneven image into one plane of focus (ex. Observation at high magnification of texture resulting from etching) and Mosaic which builds an image from a number of fields of view (ex. Reconstruction of very large grains at low magnifications) expand even further the power and flexibility of IA systems. This presentation will describe how automated methods are applied to the point count method and grain size measurement. We will show how cameras and software work together to permit quantitative measurements of primary alpha and prior beta microstructures, as well as lamellar alpha plate thickness in titanium alloys.Automated and semi automated quantitative measurements of various Titanium microstrures have been assessed, using the Clemex Vision PE. Examples of the methods and steps used are presented.

A culture-independent approach based on 16S rRNA gene clone library was used to analyze the bacterial community change both associated to the solids and in the liquid phase during pyrite bioleaching process. Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA fragments revealed that the retrieved se-quences mainly related to genus Leptospirillum, genus Sulfobacillus and genus Acidithiobacillus. During the bioleaching process, genus Leptospirillum trends to grow associated to the solids while major of genus Sulfobacillus were in the liquid fase, only accounting little portion in the solids. Genus Acidithiobacillus can grow both on the solids and in the liquid phase, but accounting high portion on the solids.
