The prosperity of any nation depends, to a large extent, on its natural resources such as oil, coal, 'metal, timber, waterpower, and fertile soil. Each one of these resources forms the basis of a huge industry. The mining and smelting industry ranks among the first since it paves the way for a number of other industries. The mines and smelters provide a market for electric power, coal, timber, and agricultural products: other industries in turn provide a market for metals and non-metals. The real pioneering, however, is done by the prospector who goes into the wilderness to search for the ores from which the metals are to be extracted for the use of men. Prospecting is an interesting and fascinating occupation. There are many difficulties and hardships in the way but the lure of gold and the vision of finding an outcrop that may develop into a large bank account, within a reasonably short time, will urge the prospector forward. Thus, on the outskirts of this northern hemisphere hundreds of prospectors are searching and toiling and of whom nothing is known or heard until they reach civilization and announce a new discovery. Then a mad rush takes place and everybody who can afford to go will take a gamblers chance and plant stakes in the neighbourhood of the new discovery, or wherever an outcrop of mineralized rock can be found, with the hope of winning a fortune.

A bulk compositional chemical analysis often provides incomplete information to help the mineral processor when faced with the problem of removing troublesome contaminants in low concentrations. Michigan Tech has developed a unique approach for addressing this problem. A combination of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and image analysis was successfully used to characterize the species responsible for phosphorus contamination of less than . 05 weight percent in iron ore. An automated routine acquired the chemical signature of each particle on a back scattered electron image. The few particles containing phosphorus were identified from the hundreds of particles examined, and the phosphate phases present were easily characterized.

"Sustainability is a concept that involves several aspects like social, economy and environment. For the concept of sustainable mining is an action that involves to do more in social acceptance, distribution of welfare, an stable economy and the environment. Understanding the mining operation that creates a new state that is necessary to prepare and conduct searching for the best results in sustainability. The results of sustainable mining could be directed to achieve less net environmental impacts, more economic development through the transformation of the natural capital and the social acceptance as the result of good negotiations with the communities in the surroundings. To do that, one option is to create frameworks to planning the regional mining developments that allows the stakeholders to decide and develop different strategies to addresses the sustainability in a mining environment. Strategies based on the understanding of the whole mining business, the environment in which it operates, composed for a natural resources network that interact in a complex system, social system composed by different groups, communities and economies that could be subject to big transformations. INTRODUCTION The mining sector represents one of the most significant challenges for sustainable development, given the magnitude of the impacts that it has on the social and natural systems and the potential to generate welfare associated with its exploitation. Some of the main challenges of mining to contribute to sustainable development are the reduction of the environmental and social impacts of mining operations, to advance in the distribution of benefits in the community and the investing in the development of substitutes. To help in this direction it is necessary to integrate more actors than those who have been considered traditionally in the development of the mining business, and consider the natural environment, communities and the several dynamics generated by the interaction of these elements that contribute to sustainable development. This work provides some useful considerations for sustainable development of mining operations in regions with mining vocation, through the convergence of objectives and the finding of synergies between the existing conditions in the territories and the potential conditions that are generated by new mining developments. A DEFINITION FOR SUSTAINABILITY IN MINING The definition of the Brundtland Commission in 1987 established that sustainable development is ""the ability to ensure that it meets the needs of the present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs""."

The in-situ observation of the effect of impurities on the reduction process of iron oxides by C in TEM was carried out. A few wt% of CaO or AbO, was used as impurities in FeO was prepared. Some precipitates grew into the C layer expect for using 3.0wtCa. The reaction between FeO and carbon was much different from using pure FeO at about 800-1 lOOK. The rate of reaction became much slower including Ca and almost no reaction was happened with the concentration of CaO up to 3.0wt%. On the contrary, AbO, had ahuost no effect on the reaction. The results indicated that Ca suppressed the reaction and the effect of Al was much less. The precipitates which grew into C layer accompanied almost no Ca and AI. Only Fe was detected in the precipitates.

In this study, Resin-in-Pulp (RIP) technology is used to separate Pb from a chalcopyrite slurry. Solvent-impregnated resin, Lewatit® VP OC 1026, which contains di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) in a macroporous polystyrene matrix was used, as the functional group exhibits selectivity for Pb over Cu. Adsorption pH, kinetics, as well as resin and CuSO4 concentrations were investigated. The results show that the kinetics of Pb and Cu loading are fast, reaching the adsorption equilibrium within 30 min. The equilibrium pH of 2 was chosen as optimum for operation in order to achieve a high Pb extraction rate and extent as well as selectivity for Pb over Cu. High Cu(II) concentration in solution results in Pb(II) requiring a larger amount of resin for the same degree of extraction. Regeneration and reuse tests show that the loss of adsorption capacity happens in the 1st and 2nd cycles and then the adsorption capacity stabilises for the 3rd cycle.

The sulphur consumed in Canadian pulp mills and acid plants is worth approximately three million dollars annually and amounts to one hundred and fifty thousand long tons, all of which is imported from the United States. Concurrently with a decline in the value of newsprint there has been a gradual increase in the price of this raw material. Most pulp mills in Canada are situated within reasonable distance of domestic pyrite deposits; nevertheless it has not yet been found possible to mine these deposits and utilize the contained sulphur in competition with the imported material. It is the purpose of this paper to elucidate the reasons therefor, and to describe? a commercial-scale experiment undertaken with the object of introducing a native raw material into the Canadian pulp industry on the purely economic basis. Reasons for the Preferred use of Sulphur The known sulphur deposits in the United States are very large, so that at least a twenty-year supply of this material is assured. It is recovered cheaply and in pure condition. Although large deposits of pyrite are known in Canada, nothing has yet been developed to compare in size, cost of mining, or purity with the United States material. It has been necessary to handle and transport more than two tons of pyrite to equal a ton of sulphur.

Coal dust explosions have occurred in coal mines across the world. The Mitsui Miike Coal Mine disaster in 1963 was an example of how this hazard was not managed effectively, resulting in the loss of 458 lives and hundreds of people sustaining permanent brain injury from carbon monoxide poisoning. Management of the risks for this hazard have been well documented and have been implemented in modern coal mines. A recent trend in some mines has seen the abolition of barriers on roadways on the basis that the risks are being managed by the current controls. These controls include stone dust application, trickle dusters, dust analysis and dust removal. Provide the U.S. mining industry with a user friendly computer program to calculate stresses in underground coal mines in order to improve safety conditions for mine workers. Capabilities of MULSIM/NL MULSIM/NL (multiple seams, nonlinear) is a three-dimensional boundary-element method (BEM) program developed at the U.S. Bureau of Mines for stress and displacement analysis of coal mines. It can analyze one or two parallel seams that can have any orientation with respect to the Earth's surface. Three main new features distinguish MULSIM/NL from its predecessors: (1) non¬linear material models, (2) multiple mining steps, and (3) energy release and strain energy computations. MULSIM/NL has six material models for the in-seam material: (1) linear elastic for coal, (2) strain softening, (3) elastic plastic, (4) bilinear hardening, (5) strain hardening, and (6) linear elastic for gob. The multiple mining step capability enables the user to efficiently simulate a changing mine geometry. Finally, MULSIM/ NL computes energy release rate due to mining using the most recent concepts advanced by Salamon.

Sub-Level stoping was used in this country at least as early as 1912, at the Magpie mine in Michipicoten. The fundamental principles of the system are the same wherever it is used, but modifications have been adopted in the Michigan iron mines and in several Canadian mines. It is a system whereby a suitable body of ore may be developed quickly and worked cheaply, with a low initial expense, and by miners of quite ordinary ability. The basic method, described in the following pages, may be modified to meet conditions where one or more factors are not in accord with normal sub-level stoping requirements. In suitable ground, sub-level stoping is probably the most satisfactory method yet devised for underground hard-rock mining. It is so simple, straightforward, and safe that no special training of a crew is necessary. Any miner capable of drifting and raising can carry on the work necessary for sub-level stoping after the shaft has been sunk. The method is suitable, however, only for reasonably wide ore-bodies, the minimum width of ore to which it can be economically applied being somewhere in the neighbour-hood of thirty feet. The development programme is simple. Assuming, for purposes of illuslustration, an ideal ore-body, two thousand feet long, dipping nearly vertical, and varying in width from forty to a hundred feet, this programme would be as follows. The shaft should be sunk on the footwall side about sixty feet outside of the ore-body and near its centre. Levels are then established at suitable intervals, usually 125 feet. On each level, a cross-cut is run to the ore-body, and there a main-haulage drift is driven in either direction to the end of the ore. Cross-cuts are then run at 25-foot intervals, so that ore-chutes can be spaced about 25 feet centre to centre each way. It is not necessary that these cross-cuts be extended to the walls of the ore-body, if the position of the walls is known; they are extended just far enough to make room for the correct location of the chutes.

The degree of saturation in leach facilities and waste dumps can be determined by means of this simple test equipment. A design flow rate is applied to the sample, which is equivalent to irrigation and/or the design storm event. In this sense, the paper point out that the tests were carried out on two different ore sizes from the Pierina Gold mine in Peru. The samples were remolded by using three different densities, simulating different depths within the heap. The ore was subjected to a predefined flow rate, which was equivalent to the design irrigation rate. The flow rate was increased to consider the additional effect of the design storm event during irrigation. In the future, further tests will be performed using different ores samples from operating mines and varying different parameters to help built a database and develop other useful applications from this test, such as general guidelines for maximum irrigation rates for leach facilities.

WHEN geophysical methods were first employed in the search for ore deposits and oil accumulations, it was hoped that they would provide a direct means of locating such concentrations. Magnetized needles were used long ago in prospecting for magnetic iron ore, and soon after the discovery of galvanism in about 1790 attempts were made to find concentrations of valuable minerals electrically. Evidence indicating that the early geophyeical instruments were regarded merely as improved divining or dowsing rods is to be seen in the names "mineral finders," "ore finders," etc., that were applied to them. Today, appellations of this kind raise serious doubts in informed minds as to the intelligence and integrity of individuals advocating the use of such euphemistically named methods or instruments, for experience and research have shown that, geophysical, it is never a question of directly locating a given mineral but merely of delimiting its possible occurrence.

IN common with many other companies engaged in the mining and processing of ores, research has always been an important activity of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company. Much of this research has been carried on at the various plants of the Company by the operating staffs, and over the years has been an essential factor in developing new methods and improving existing methods of operation. In 1917 arrangements were made with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under which the Company had the exclusive use of one or two small laboratories in the then newly constructed MIT buildings and the use of the metallurgical laboratories, subject of course to the Institute's needs. After about two years this work was temporarily discontinued but was resumed in 1920 under the direction of G. H. Clevenger, consulting metallurgist for the Company, who recently retired. Becoming cramped for space, the laboratory was moved to a location near MIT on Amherst Street, Cambridge, in 1924. Establishment of a general research laboratory in metropolitan Boston naturally followed from the fact that the head office of the Company was located there and that the library facilities available for all types of research were, and are, unsurpassed. The disadvantages in carrying on research at great distances from the operating units of the Company were always apparent, but with widely scattered plants this disadvantage could not he overcome. Here in the Orient we engineers are .learning a new meaning for the word "orientation"- hereafter that engineering term will be a synonym for gracious hospitality, and "to orient" will mean to turn a whole country over to the World Engineering Congress. Mere geographic distance is no longer able to separate nations, for the conquest of distance is one of the triumphs of 'modern engineering. We of the Americas are fortunate in the position of our continents: with their shores lapped by the waves of two oceans, we face' two great civilizations, the' Occidental and the Oriental, and thus we can share the intellectual resources of these two older cultures.

THE Western States Joint Convention opened at Denver on Sept. 20, with about 400 registered the first day. Monday was devoted to the American Mining Congress, and the afternoon session was taken up with a discussion of the public land laws of the United States. Hubert Work, Secretary of Interior, and William Spry, Commissioner of the General Land Office, presented a comprehensive review of the origin and operation of the laws and argued against any general change in the system. Charles E. Winter, Congressman from Wyoming, marshalled the arguments in favor of turning over the public lands to the states within which they lie, and George H. Dern, Governor of Utah, presented a well-reasoned argument in favor of allowing the school sections to pass to the states regardless of their mineral or non-mineral character. The debate made it clear that in the West especially, there is strong feeling against any further development of the policy of reserving and leasing the public lands. Tuesday forenoon was devoted to the Silver Producers Association, F. H. Brownell and Charles A. Thomas being the principal speakers, and in the after- noon the American Association of Petroleum Geologists met with Alex. W. McCoy presiding, and Glenn C. Clark, J. V. Howell, and J. W. Beede presenting papers.

IN these days of low metal prices and difficult marketing conditions, any treatment that will improve the grade of a product is of interest, particularly when the operation involves little or no addition to the total cost and may even result in a marketable by-product. Such a' combination of circumstances exists, in some cases, in the zinc industry, where it has been found that certain impurities can be removed from .the ore during the Dwight-Lloyd sintering operation, previous to reduction to metal. Consequently it is not surprising that zinc smelters having these sintering machines are paying particular attention to this phase of the operation. Loss of zinc as fume is very low under the conditions obtaining in sintering zinc ores, but impurities such as cadmium and lead are more readily fumed off and it is on this fact that the purification is based. As a result of preferential volatilization of these impurities a sintered product' is made from which purer zinc metal or oxide can be produced, while the fume may be collected and treated to recover the impurity metals. To be effective the operation must be carefully conducted, but no special equipment other than that of a well designed Dwight. Lloyd plant is needed.

IN an ideal mill, with perfect milling operations, the mineral extraction would be 100 per cent, the, concentrate would be 100 per cent mineral, the tailing would assay zer.0 mineral and the milling cost would be zero dollars. Such an operation can, of course, never be attained. We can only strive to approach it as nearly as possible and in doing so most recognize .the fact that the three primary factors in milling: assay of concentrate, assay of tailing, and cost of operation bear a definite economic relationship to each other. This relation will change from time to time and will be different for different mills, depending on milling equipment, character and quality of feed, market conditions, and other factors. It is granted that for a given operation there is an economic point, but the location of this point is difficult. It is for the purpose of making some of these economic points a little more tangible that this paper has been prepared.

PACIFIC COAST steel and iron industries can now take care of all the western and export demands except for heavy structural shapes, thick plates, rails, alloy tool steels, and a few other items. In. 1902 all of our steel came from St. Louis and Milwaukee and points still farther east. A small quantity at that time came from foreign countries. Early mining in the West was, broadly speaking, prior to the steel age. 'Wood for structures and iron for castings were almost exclusively used. Forgings were made of rolled iron that came from the East and foreign countries. San Francisco was, from the early days of mining, the manufacturing center for mining and milling machinery of all types and held that position until the .nineties, when eastern competition began to be felt. Even today in the old mining camps of the West, and many abroad, you will find machines and equipment with familiar San Francisco manufacturers' names. ..Iron, either rolled or cast, entered into their manufacture, for steel castings did not come into general use :until the nineties.

USUALLY we forget about the things which move along smoothly. There are no causes for worry when there are no troubles. But when troubles arise we must put forth some thought and effort to alleviate them. No one "worries about his automobile until it begins to knock, develop flat tires, or refuses to start. However, when these ailments become apparent we get wide awake on the spot, and do our best to repair the car. So we find ourselves now. The old bus seems to hit all the ditches. There is rough ground on all sides and none of us is able to do anything toward improvement. A state of pessimism stares us in the face, and there is sufficient cause for it. With lead at 3.75 cents, copper about 8 cents, zinc under 4 cents, -and silver about 26 cents, one has a reason for grief. When we think of the 5000 or less men employed in Utah mines and smelters in 1931, as compared with about 12,000 in 1929, the calamity seems even worse. In view of the present economic crisis we cannot even think of new men getting a job.

WITHOUT QUESTION the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania contains the most remarkable coal deposits of the whole world. Within its borders ,are to be found excellent coals ranging in rank from the high volatile bituminous of the western part of 'the state through the low volatile or semi-bituminous of central Pennsylvania to that aristocrat of solid fuels, anthracite, found in the East. . . . But while other states and even the Federa1 Government have recognized the needs of the coal industry, Pennsylvania has not. Though bituminous coal represents one of the most important industries in the state, far more important in annual productive wealth than agriculture, for example, hundreds, of thousands of dollars have been spent on agricultural research whereas little or nothing has been spent on coal investigation.
