"Ever since we have started to assist those responsible for blasting with blast simulation studies, we havebecome aware of an interesting aspect, namely that in 90 % of cases we are asked ‘‘Can you seek ablasting method which gives better fragmentation than the method which we use now’’. But after a visit to the site, and the evaluation of the fragmentation obtained with their present blasting method, it very often becomes evident that it is the ease of mucking and not the fragmentation which requires improvement. Hence we then proceed to do a simulation study the results of which are improved mucking rather then more fragmentation, and those responsible for the blasting always become very satisfied."

Particularly in open-cast mining, the benefits associated with precise, reliable initiation systems are perceived to be considerable. Many of the systems currently being developed have sophisticated programming requirements associated with them, or are numbered systems that require predetermined layouts to determine timing patterns, and importantly are far more expensive than existing initiation systems.

Numerous investigators have studied grinding. Each has contributed his bit to a literature that is difficult to correlate. Too many of the results have been transformed into curves with so many "inflection points" and "counterflexures" that they obscure the issue. Some of the investigators have neglected the very essence of the problem, namely the power and the amount of material to which a known amount of work was applied. The purpose of this paper is to show the ease with which results can be interpreted when these quantities are duly recognized. Some grinding tests will be given for illustration. Grinding studies are of two kinds: (1) Study of the character of the ore and (2) study of the performance of the machines. Several ores may be crushed by a given machine, or several machines may be used on a given ore. The illustrations given in this report cover both objectives.

DOUG HALBE: Thanks, Terry. And in spite of your introductory comments, I'm going to attempt to continue our hallowed tradition of saying nice things about the speakers. This is really a serious comment now. We, as mineral processing and mill people, don't often talk to people outside our general operating area. One thing that we've tried to do in this operators' symposium is get speakers from various types of plant operations to help illustrate all the things we have in common. Our next speaker is from the industrial minerals area. I think there's a lot to be learned from industrial minerals operations. Some of the people in the last session learned some things about fine grinding in industrial mineral operations. I was a little surprised to see people there grind to 2 microns. Our next speaker is Frank Alsobrook. Frank is another nonmetallurgical engineer. He has a degree in geology, a master's of science from the University of Wisconsin. He's had his own very successful consulting company for a number of years. This is your 11th anniversary, Frank? Very good. He's also the immediate past chair of the industrial minerals division. I think the folks at the speakers' table should be ashamed. You have been so rowdy that Frank chose to sit in the audience. [laughter] We'd like you to come up now, Frank, and tell us some things that you've seen that might be useful to us. INTRODUCTION FRANK ALSOBROOK: The three topics addressed briefly are (1) teamwork and operations modeling, (2) the pitfalls of capital conservatism, and (3) the potential for by-product recovery. Ideas for improvements in these areas are not unique to industrial minerals but apply to metal mining and processing operations, as well. Several additional topics are suggested at the end of the paper.

Stress-strain curves were obtained for single crystals of alpha brass in tension and in direct shear. Specimens were strained various amounts in a given slip direction, unloaded, and immediately strained in a second slip direction 60°, 120°, or 180&apos; from the original slip direction. Crystals strained in tension and direct shear had comparable critical resolved shear stresses and stress-strain curves. The density of slip lines in direct shear and in tension was essentially the same. The stress-strain curves obtained in shear were independent of initial orientation, choice of {111 } slip plane, choice of <110> slip direction, prior annealing temperature, and rate of cooling after annealing. There was no recovery after annealing for 4 hr at room temperature or 200°C; recovery was observed after 4 hr at 400°C. The crystals showed no asterism and mechanical properties were completely recoverable up to 20 pct strain. It was found that there is a barrier to slip in all latent close-packed directions, and that the magnitude of these barriers, evaluated at 3 pct strain, is proportional to prior strain and independent of the choice of latent direction in the {111} plane. The formation of Cottrell-Lomer barriers is discussed as a possible explanation for the hardening of the latent systems. AN idealized concept of plastic deformation indicates that a single crystal should yield at some stress that is dependent on crystal perfection and it should then continue to deform plastically by the process of "easy glide," which is characterized by a linear stress-strain curve and a low coefficient, ds/dE, of work-hardening. Hexagonal metal crystals generally conform to this ideal concept of laminar flow. In face-centered cubic metals the range of easy glide is always restricted in magnitude and it is strongly dependent on orientation, composition, crystal size, shape, surface preparation, and temperature. Since one of the principal differences between the two crystal systems, both of which deform by slip on close-packed planes, is the existence of secondary (latent) slip planes in the face-centered cubic crystals, it has been proposed that the transition from easy glide to turbulent flow, characterized by rapid linear hardening, is due to slip on secondary planes intersecting the primary plane.&apos;-.; However, the characteristic differences between individual face-centered cubic metals remain to be explained; in particular, it is not clear why the range of easy glide should vary so greatly in different metals and alloys similarly oriented for single slip. An investigation and comparison of different metals with respect to latent hardening on the primary slip plane should provide some of the information required to specify the necessary and sufficient conditions governing the transition from easy glide to turbulent flow. But, in order to accomplish this purpose, plastic strain must be produced by simple shear in a chosen plane and in a predetermined direction by some form of directed shear apparatus, the results of which must be correlated with the corresponding tension experiments. Two such experiments have been performed previously with zinc and with aluminum. Edwards, Washburn, and Parker" and Edwards and Washburn7 found that the strain-hardening coefficients in two latent directions in the basal plane of zinc were the same as in the primary direction. However, to initiate and propagate slip in either the [2110] or the [1210] direction, following primary slip in the [1l20] direction, it was necessary to increase the stress above that required to continue slip in the primary direction; when the direction of shear was reversed 180 deg plastic strain began at a much lower stress than that required to initiate slip in the original direction and the stress to propagate slip in the reverse direction was lower than the stress to continue slip in the forward direction, indicating a permanent loss of strain-hardening. Rohm and Kochendorfer observed softening in aluminum for all latent close-packed planes and directions. They also found that the critical resolved shear stress obtained from their direct shear apparatus was 50 pct lower than the value obtained from conventional tension tests, that the stress-strain curve was linear at 50 pct plastic strain, and that slip lines were not visible at strains less than 30 pct. At present it is uncertain whether these diverse results correspond to real differences in work-hardening characteristics of the close-packed planes of aluminum and zinc or to differences in experimental technique. In view of Read&apos;s analysis &apos;" of the stress distribution in the experimental arrangement of Rohm and Kochendorfer, there is some reason to question the significance of the latter results. In order to resolve this problem it is necessary to re-valuate the direct-shear technique and either repeat the previous measurements or investigate a third system. The latter choice seemed most likely to produce significant results with respect to work-hardening, and accordingly, it was decided to examine the hardening characteristics of the latent slip directions in alpha-brass. The choice of alpha-brass was dictated by the fact that easy glide is more extensive in this alloy than in any other face-centered cubic metal or alloy and, presumably, more nearly like the idealized hexagonal system. Experimental Procedure Crystals were made in graphite by the Bridge-man method in the form of cylinders, 11/2 in. diam and 8 to 9 in. long. Time and time again history shows us that mine closures are sustainability failures. Mine operators do not know how to turn the mine closure into an asset and communities around the mine do not know how to plan or what to implement to be sustainable when the mine needs to close. If we want to achieve sustainability when we close a mine, we generally need to consider what economic activity we will have to create leading up to the mine closure to ensure that the communities remaining in the area are not worse off after mining than before. There is not one silver bullet solution to mine closure, as all mines are affected by different environmental and socio-economic conditions. That is one of the reasons why mine closure is so difficult.Effective stakeholder engagement is the nucleus around which sustainability is built. Achieving sustainability as part of mine closure means not only a self-sufficient community, but also could lead to transformation of that asset.A key issue is that neighbouring communities become completely reliant on the mine. The mine has influenced the economic, environmental and social aspects of the community and with no alternative economic sources. The community and municipality will struggle with capacity to maintain infrastructure, services and jobs. This not only impacts the mine workers and their families but also other businesses and people in the town that make a living by servicing the needs of the workers and their families. Social problems associated with a mining operations and closures need to be considered. The misuse of alcohol, domestic violence, breakdown in law and order, economic and health issues all have a severe influence. Families often need to relocate from the mining town to find work. DOUG HALBE: I&apos;ve decided that we&apos;re going to change tactics here and we&apos;re going to be nice to people from now on. [Co-chair makes gesture of intense disbelief; laughter] I&apos;ve also decided who&apos;s not going to be a co-chair next year. [laughter] We thought we&apos;d get a couple of experts for our next presentation: some people with a lot of experience. We&apos;ve asked them to tell us some of the things that all of you operators out there might be able to apply immediately to your plant. Our next two speakers have a tremendous amount of experience, and I think you&apos;ll find what they&apos;re going to say is highly pertinent to most plants. I looked through their paper and found some things that I could have used in the plants I operated in the past. Our first speaker is Terry McNulty. A lot of you know Terry. He was with Anaconda for a number of years as director of research. He then was president of Hazen Research. I&apos;m going to continue with our new custom of saying nice things. Terry is the guy that I call when I don&apos;t know something, and he&apos;s always got the answer. SPEAKER: Who do you work for, Doug? [laughter] DOUG HALBE: Remember that we&apos;re being nice to people here, Joe. I know that&apos;s a stretch. [laughter] TERRY McNULTY: Thank you, Doug. I won&apos;t say anything deprecatory about him, but I would have to comment that the observations made by earlier speakers have been far too generous. [laughter] During nine years of consulting as a mineral processor and extractive metallurgist, I have often conducted audits of the performance of client&apos;s plants. Usually these audits have been ordered by the plant management in hopes of identifying opportunities for improving processing efficiency or reducing costs. Four methods to assess the relative flotability of fine coal have been tested: flotation with frother only, flotation with frother and collector, salt flotation, and timed-release analysis. A practical and simple criterion which combines the separation efficiency (capacity factor and kinetic rate constant (intensity factor) has been suggested. Five coal samples are chosen and tested. Based on test results, it is concluded that the flotability test with collector and frother is closer to practice, and, according to the suggested flotability criterion, coal fines can be classified into four categories of relative flotability: very easy, easy, moderate, and difficult.

IN 1925 a criterion for localized deformation in a single crystal was derived by Taylor and Elam.&apos; They noted that for a single active slip plane the slip plane area is constant, but the direction of the stress with respect to the slip direction changes during deformation so that, when the increase in stress due to this rotation is large enough relative to the work hardening, instability occurs. (By instability is meant continued slip on the active slip plane.) The instability criterion may be written t>dt/d?/m tan2? [1] where t and ? are resolved shear stress and strain, m the Schmid factor for resolving shear stress, and ? is the angle between the slip direction and the axis of tension. The formula points out that regardless of the atomic mechanism involved, for large flow stresses and low work hardening rates, slip on a single plane—once started—should continue. The case of alloying provides a direct possibility of adjusting the parameters in Eq. [I]: As an alloying element is added to a pure metal, the flow stress is raised and the work hardening in easy glide may be either decreased2 or unaltered.3 Since flow stresses in easy glide may rise to the kg/mm2 range for alloy crystals while easy glide slopes may be less than % kg/mm2, 2 it is possible for the inequality to be satisfied. Indeed Garstone and Honeycombe3 report that slip becomes coarser with increasing stress in the easy glide range, where the flow stress would be increasing and the slope would be essentially constant. Another case where high flow stresses and low hardening rates accompany coarse slip is that of quench hardening.4 Maddin and Cottrell report that quenched aluminum crystals display slip markings resembling those of a brass. A similar effect has been observed after irradiation.&apos;

Stress-strain curves were obtained for single crystals of 70 pct Ag-30 pct Zn tested in tension and shear. Samples tested in tension and shear had comparable resolved shear stresses and stress-strain curves. The {111} <110> slip system was observed. It zoas found that the9.e is a barrier to slip in both latent close -packed directions and that the magnitude of these barriers is proportional to prior strain during easy glide. It was observed that cross-slip in tension and shear was most frequent in crystals with an initial orientation near <100> "Oershoot" zoas observed in tension. The amount of this "overshoot" was independent of initial orientation. The stress-strain characteristics of Cu-Zn, which shows a long easy-glide region, have been extensively investigated."-" In light of recent ideas on dislocations, cross-slip, effect of solute atoms, and stacking fault energy, it was felt that the certain features of this earlier work might be compared with another alloy, Ag-30 pct Zn, which also exhibits a long easy-glide region. Tension and shear stress at room temperatures were employed. The results obtained, together with some interpretation of the observations, are described below. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The silver and zinc used for mixing the alloys were 99.99 pct pure. The two components were weighed to within 0.1 pct of the weights required fo the alloy composition. They were then placed in a closed graphite mold and the mold and contents were heated in 100°C stages from 500&apos; to 900°C with sufficient time and vigorous agitation at each stage provided to dissolve the silver. The crucible was then heated to 1150°C and agitated violently before being quenched in oil. The resulting alloy rod was machined free of sur face defects and then placed in a graphite mold designed for growing single crystals. The graphite mold was closed with a graphite plug and was encased in a pyrex glass tube which was connected to a vacuum system. The tube and mold assembly were placed in a furnace; the tube was evacuated and the furnace was rapidly heated to a temperature sufficient for fusing and sealing the glass. The glass-encased evacuated mold and contents were then lowered through a vertical furnace. The top section of the furnace was held at 100 °C above the melting point of the alloy. The lowering rate was 1.5 in. per hr. The tension specimens were 1/4 in. diam; the shear specimens were 1/2 in. diam. These specimens were then removed from the mold, etched, and chemically polished with hot (60°C) Chase etch reagent (Crz03-4.0 g, NH4C1-7.5 g, NHOs-150 cc, HzS04-52 cc, and Hz0 to make 1 liter). In preparation for tensile testing, the specimens were carefully machined to a diameter of about 0.200 in. to permit a gage length of 6 in., annealed for 16 hr at 800&apos; to reduce coring, and then cleaned and polished. A modified Bausch-type shear apparatus which has been described previously18 were employed. The gage length was 1/8 in. This shear apparatus was placed in an Instron tensile testing machine. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Tension. Several specimens were extended at room temperature to determine the effect of initial orientation on the stress-strain curves of Ag-30 pct Zn. The initial orientation and the resolved shear stress supported by the active slip system at various total strains are plotted in Fig. 1. The critical resolved shear stress, t,, initial rate of work hardening, d/dy, and length of the easy-glide region are independent of orientation. T. H. Alden and R. L. Fleischer (General Electric Research Laboratory)— The authors&apos; results indicate clearly and, we believe, significantly that during tensile deformation the surface layers of an aluminum crystal are hardened more severely than the interior of the crystal. A probable explanation of this effect, as the authors indicate, is that dislocations in the primary slip system may be obstructed at the surface or, it should be added, near the surface. The intent of this discussion is to show that the oxide film on aluminum is not likely to be responsible for this effect, but that the results can be understood if it is assumed the secondary slip is more active in the surface layers than in the interior. Prior study has shown that the principal mechanical effect of an oxide film on a single crystal is to raise the yield stress while leaving the rate of strain hardening during the initial deformation relatively unaffected.33 Since the yield stress is unchanged during polishing in the present case, we conclude that continual removal of the oxide film exerts a small effect on the plastic hardening.* It appears that the hardening interactions are occurring not only at the immediate surface, but to an appreciable depth below it, although with decreasing severity. For example, Kramer and Demer found that with removal of 0.004 in. from a specimen, the easy glide region was extended somewhat; but the yield stress did not decrease. The initial yield stress was recovered only after 0.041 in. was removed. Since a very brief polish would permit dislocations trapped behind a surface film to run out,34 extra dislocations must, instead, be trapped to a considerable depth below the surface. The same conclusion is drawn from the observation of decreasing hardening slope with increasing surface removal rates. If the hardening interactions were only at the immediate surface, a full softening effect would be observed at some small removal rate. The view is taken here that strain hardening is principally caused by small amounts of secondary slip.35 The secondary dislocations will interact in various ways with the primaries, interfering with their motion and causing them to accumulate in the crystal. Prior studies of easy glide have shown Diehl&apos;s model of hardening to be qualitatively consistent with the effects of impurities,36 of temperature,36 and of crystal size.37 On this basis the enhanced hardening of the surface layers in aluminum arises from increased secondary slip at and to some depth below the surface. Selective removal of this hardened layer is expected to decrease the measurable "bulk" hardening, the effect increasing with the removal rate and decreasing with the applied strain rate. We suggest that the stress on secondary systems is raised by the bending moments arising from interactions with the grips during the deformation. This stress from the grips has been shown to be a maximum37 near the surface, and hence, increased secondary slip should result. Prior investigations of grip effect:; indicate that as the grip stresses are raised by changing the crystal shape, the easy glide slope increases while the extent of easy glide decreases.38-40 It has been shown also that bending moments superimposed during tensile testing may either decrease easy glide, when supporting the moments caused by gripping, or increase it, when cancelling the gripping moments.38 This interpretation of the authors&apos; results, emphasizing the special importance of secondary slip near the surface, is also consistent with the earlier results of Rosi.41 Copper crystals alloyed with silver in the surface layer show greatly increased easy glide compared with pure copper. In addition, the easy glide slope is reduced. The effect of bulk alloying in extending easy glide has been well established and has been interpreted as indicating the relative difficulty of secondary slip in alloy crystals. Since non-basal glide is difficult in zinc crystals, the effects of surface removal during deformation may be less important. Experiments to test this idea are in progress. I. R. Kramer and L. J. Demer (authors&apos; reply)—The authors wish to thank Dr. Alden and Dr. Fleischer for their discussion. Our interpretation of the data in the paper is that dislocation motion is obstructed by "debris" which starts to form at the surface and extends towards the interior of the crystal with further plastic deformation. The fact that we did not find a reversion from Stage II to Stage I by surface removal shows that in Stage II the "debris" fills the entire cross-section of the specimen. Drs. “Let’s get discipline and quality into easy to understand evaluations!” Project Managers and MetPlant Operators accept poor quality evaluations because they are generally unaware of what they should expect.The 2010 draft AusIMM ‘Guidelines for Techno-Economic Evaluations’ were collated by a subcommittee of practitioners and are regarded as best practice.They apply directly to projects and metallurgical plant evaluations, including those with a heavy technical basis. They can be applied to technical problem solving where there are no monetary computations. Project Managers and MetPlant Operators should demand that economic models and evaluations follow the six principles. They should become working tools which are easy to understand, fit for purpose, consistent, rigorous, record sources of input data, have key graphs and are rapid to audit.

Stress-train curves were obtained for single crystals of silver, Ag-5 pct Zn, Ag-10 pct Zn, and Ag-20 pct Zn tested in tension and shear at 78°, 195°, and 297°K. At room temperature the critical resolced shear stress gC increased, the length of&apos; the easy-glide region increased, and the rate of&apos; work hardening dwving easy glide decreased with increasixg zinc concentration. The change in the ratio of uc at room temperature to that at lower temperatures was significantly greater for the alloys than for pure silver. It was found that an increment in stress was necessary to continue slip when the slip direction was rotated 60 deg. The magnitude of this increment increased with strain for all alloys, increased with zinc concentration for a given strain, and for a given strain increased with decreasing -temperature. DESPITE its practical importance in improving the mechanical properties, alloying is not fully understood. Except for copper alloys few sets of systematic data are available. Von Goler and Sachs&apos; studied the deformation of Cu-Zn alloys of increasing zinc content and found that, for dilute alloys, the critical resolved shear stress increases linearly with concentration. The range of easy glide was found to increase with increasing zinc content. Schmid and seliger,2 Sachs and Weerts,3 and Osswald4 have shown that with Mg-A1, Au-Ag, and Cu-Ni crystals, respectively, the critical resolved shear stress also varies linearly with concentration. More recently, Linde and his coworkers have investigated the variation of the critical shear stress of copper alloyed with tin , antimony, indium, germanium, silicon, nickel, and gold. They found that the slope of the critical resolved shear stress is related to the change of lattice parameter with composition, and also to the difference in Goldschmidt&apos;s atomic diameter between solvent and solute atoms. Garstone, Honey-combe, and creetham6 have shown that similar relationships can be found for small additions of silver, gold, and germanium to pure copper. They found that, with increasing silver or gold concentration, the critical shear stress for glide is increased by alloying, and so is the range of easy glide, which reaches as much as 60 pct for 0.50 pct Ag alloy and 0.62 pct Au alloy, as compared to 6 pct for pure copper of similar initial orientation. They also found that the alloying additions had little effect on the rate of hardening during easy glide, the slope scarcely changing with increasing alloy content. General secondary slip was detected only when the crystals began to harden rapidly. Although the slip appeared to be very fine in the early stages of deformation, coarser slip bands were formed towards the end of the extensive easy-glide range. The present investigation describes the deformation characteristics of single crystals of Ag-Zn containing different concentrations of zinc. Tension and shear testing were used for this study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The method of growing the single crystals, sample preparation, and method of testing have been described in detail previously.&apos; EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Tension-Room Temperature. The initial orientations and stress-strain curves of single crystals of silver, Ag-10.0 pct Zn, and Ag-20.0 pct Zn are shown in Fig. 1. It is evident that there is considerable change in the stress-strain characteristics as a function of zinc concentration. The effects of zinc concentration on the critical resolved shear stress for both CU-zn8 and Ag-Zn alloys are summarized in Fig. 2. At all concentrations the resolved shear stress of the Cu-Zn alloys is higher than that of the Ag-Zn alloys. The resolved shear stress increases parabolically as a function of composition for both alloy systems. The length of easy-glide region increased with increasing zinc concentration, Fig. 3b). As the length increased the slope (do/de) decreased slightly, Fig. 3(b). Metallographic investigations demonstrated two significant effects of increasing zinc concentration. First, the amount of clustering increased, compare Figs. 4(a) and (b). The slip lines changed from uniform in pure silver to clustered in the Ag-20 pct Zn and Ag-30 pct Zn alloys. Second, the amount of cross slip decreased as the amount of clustering decreased.

While it is easy to state that meaningful involvement of the community can play a critical role for a successful blasting operation, following through with this involvement is not an easy task. Structured Public Involvement (SPI) is a developed protocol for involving communities in project planning decisions and could be readily applied to the blasting industry. SPI was developed for the purpose of collecting quality public input about public transportation projects. The purpose of SPI is to bring about stakeholder satisfaction with potential projects by allowing controlled input from the stakeholders. It was designed and intended for democratic societies that have come to expect a voice in public projects. While blasting operations are not always in the domain of public projects, the fundamental process outlined by SPI can be useful for collecting feedback from the immediate public around blasting operations.
