The original law and subsequent revisions were progressive steps in safeguarding the health and safety of underground employees.

"Many used electronic and optical products contain cerium of rare earth oxides, but it is difficult to recover such rare earth compounds by traditional metallurgy methods. The proposed supercritical water metallurgy is a novel way, perhaps it will be very helpful for rare element recycling, but the thermodynamic properties at such special systems is not clear. In the paper the H20-CeO-CeO2 and H2O-CeO2-Ce2O3 ternary system phase diagram were produced under the pressure of30MPa with different temperature of350°C, 375°C and 400°C. The stability existing area of possible cerium compounds and different ions like Ce2+,Ce3+,Ce4+,W,HO2-,0ff ,CeOH2+,CeO+ and CeO2· were determined.IntroductionCerium is an extensively used metal element playing an important role in the rare earth elements. CeO2 is an apparently simple binary oxide with cubic fluorite structure [l]. Ce0O gives rise to a range of important technological applications because of its oxygen storage capacity at moderate temperatures as below: CeO2=CeO2.x+ X/2O2 [2]. The oxygen storage phenomenon gives ceria important technological uses in different fields as automobile exhaust purification catalyst [3-4], fluorescent powder, ultraviolet absorption material [5], polishing powder, fuel cell materials [ 6], and gas sensors, etc. The excellent properties of CeO2 nano powder make its synthesis and preparation become one of the hot spots of world scientists study."

Gas and oil seeps have been known in Quebec for more than one hundred years. These occur in three main areas which contain sedimentary rocks with a total thickness estimated to vary from 6,000 to 20,000 feet. The strata in these areas are similar in many respects to those in producing areas of southwestern Ontario and the Appalachian basin, and the prospects for finding and developing commercial reserves of oil and gas in Quebec would therefore also appear to be favourable. Little of the exploratory drilling to date has been con-ducted in a systematic manner, and most of the drilling has utilized improper or inadequate equipment. Many wells have also failed to adequately test and fully evaluate the principal zones of interest. Relatively high drilling costs have hindered systematic exploration; however, with improved portable equipment, it is expected that future wells can be drilled with greater efficiency and at less cost. Most of the mineral rights in Quebec are held by the Provincial Government, and acreage can still be leased in large blocks on favourable terms.

In diesem Kon-text kann dann die Braunkohle die an sie gerichteten Fragen der Ökonomie, der Ökologie und der Sozialverträglichkeit auch mit Hilfe von Indikatoren beantworten.ABSTRACTThe discussion of the sustainability of lignite mining can only be continued successfully if the indus-try acts in a practical manner and demonstrates trustworthiness by responding fairly and reliably to open questions. This includes new and innovative technical solutions as well as the sensitive management of interests. The lignite industry has learned that openness and the constant effort to exchange viewpoints within their environment are all essential elements. The credibility that has been gained over the decades is the foundation on which the lignite industry can build its future. Beyond that a framework of political guidelines is necessary. Public interest in a secure and inex-pensive energy supply that also includes lignite is indispensable. In this context, the lignite industry will then be able to answer the questions which are directed at them and concern the economy, ecology, and social tolerability also by indicators."

The coal bottom ash generated from coal-fired power plant accounted for approximately 5 mil-lion tons in Korea. Almost all of coal bottom ash was treated as reclamation of the landfill because of the content of unburned carbon. For recycling of coal bottom ash, effective removal of that is required. So, in this study, the removal of unburned carbon by flotation was studied with respect to adsorption ability in surface of a bubble in order to consider its application to recycle the coal bottom ash. The sample A, B and C were that the coal bottom ash contained 2.73%, 7.01% and 10.49% of the unburned carbon (UC) respectively. The column flotation was carried out for each time as the artificial injection of air at 10.0L/min flow rate and the reagents of 500g/ton kerosene and 80g/ton MIBC were used. The samples per water of 1.3 liters were from 0.5% to 4% (w/w.%). In the result of this study, the kinetic curves of unburned carbon adsorption from injected air bubbles were in-creased rapidly as equilibrium was approached; only 5 sec was needed from the sample A and B and 10 sec was from sample C. And the equilibrium isotherms of unburned carbon adsorbed by the infected air bubble from the sample B and C could appear the BET adsorption isotherm; MT = KMEEO/(EO-E)[EO+(K-1)E](K: adsorption affinity), but not the sample A that was not enough to express the adsorption curve.

Micro-flotation tests of spodumene, beryl, quartz and feldspar have been carried out by using CaCl2 and FeCl3 as modifiers and a blending collector of oleic acid and hydroximic acid. CaCl2 shows efficient activation for spodumene when pH is above 11.5, and FeCl3 exhibits a markedly activation and good selectivity for spodumene in the range of pH 4 to 10. The main species of CaCl2 are CaOH+ and Ca(OH)2 when pH is above 11.5, and the main species of FeCl3?6H2O are Fe(OH)+2 and Fe(OH)3 during the pH range of 4 to 10. A selective flotation of spodumene and beryl from pegmatic ore had also been completed while using FeCl3?6H2O as activator and the blending collector. A bulk concentrate containing 1.087% BeO and 4.70% Li2O has also been obtained in the flotation of spodumene and beryl from pegmatic ore assaying 0.097% BeO and 0.45% Li2O, and the recoveries of BeO and Li2O in concentrate are 74.38% and 69.50% respectively.

This paper aims to study the influence and action mechanism of collector Y-89 on the flotation of auriferous pyrite. The measurement to identify adsorption quantity, IR and XPS spectrum analysis and flotation experiment made on the pure mineral were conducted. The research results show that when the dosage of MIBC is 20 mg/L, and pH of 8, the dosage of Y-89 over 60 mg/L, the pyrite recovery rate is greater than 80%.And when the dosage of Y-89is 60 mg/L, dosage of MIBC 20 mg/L, the pH in a wider range (pH=4~9), the recovery is greater than 75%. When the pH is above 10, the pyrite is depressed and its recovery rate is found to be dramatically dropping. Adsorption quantity measurement also shows that the strong alkaline conditions inhibit the adsorption of Y-89 on the surface of auriferous pyrite. IR measurement indicates that chemisorption of Y-89 occurs on the surface of auriferous pyrite. XPS spectrum analysis indicates that without adding Y-89, oxidation reaction occurs on the surface of pyrite. But when Y-89 is added, the chemical environment of Fe on the surface of pyrite has changed. Such findings indicate that with Y-89, chemisorption occurs on the surface of auriferous pyrite.

"DURING the past five years, production of asbestos fibers has increased in all countries that list asbestos as one of their mineral resources. Despite the many small mines that have been opened in Canada, United States, Mexico, South America, Italy, South Africa, Australia, Yugoslavia, and Rhodesia, the supply still does not meet the demand. It is estimated that total 1952 world production of asbestos fibers of all varieties approximated 1,600,000 tons, with Canada supplying 966,382 tons (I), or 60 per cent of all fiber mined.Asbestos fiber brokers continually are offering odd-lot samples of chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite fibers to manufacturers, •quoting fantastic prices for tonnages •varying from just a few to 50 or more in a month. In many cases, the samples are not properly graded and contain quantities of rock impurities and finely ground dust.When vendors submit samples of asbestos fibers, the manufacturer should consider• them in terms of price, quality, quantity, and as possible substitutes for fibers currently used in his products.Grading of these odd-lot fibers in most cases has been poorly done, with resultant non-uniform fiber lengths. In some instances, a number of miscellaneous lots of fibers have been .blended for sale. This blending produces a fiber that is difficult for the manufacturer to accept as a substitute for the well-standardized Canadian fibers."

To meet the flotation process requirements, the large-scale flotation cell must be designed for sufficient pulp mixing, reasonable air dispersion and solid suspension, which is very difficult to design for super large-scale flotation cell. Hence, the flotation cell scale-up and optimization for a short period is a challenge for super large-scale flotation cell design. Computational fluid dynamics simulation has been applied in flotation cell study, which is effective, timesaving and low cost in the study of the flow field distribution for super large-scale flotation cell. This paper demonstrates the flow field characteristics in the 600m3 flotation cell by CFD. The flotation cell model is meshed with hexahedral grid and the high mesh quality assures the computational precision. MRF model, namely a steady-state approximation, ensures that individual cell zones can be assigned different rotational speed. Euler-Euler approach is chosen for multiphase flow simulation to treat different phases as interpenetrating continua. Numerical simulation of single phase, two-phase and three-phase are investigated respectively. Results suggested that the flotation cell has the apparent upper and lower flow circulation. In condition of the impeller rotation, the air is dispersed reasonably. In addition, the solid phase volume concentration distribution in the cell has a little difference.

During December 2007, Lake Cowal Gold Mine located in New South Wales, Australia experienced a significant pit wall failure. The wall failure resulted in the deposition of a large quantity of saprolite consisting largely of clays and lake bed sediments to the bottom of the Phase 1 open pit mine. This wall failure ultimately buried two loaded blast patterns.

Laboratory bath smelting tests were conducted to determine the feasibility of smelting nickel- copper concentrate directly to a low iron matte in one step. Concentrate, air/oxygen and a silica flux were fed to a matte-slag bath kept in MgO crucibles at I 300°C. Various oxygen enrichments and smelting rates were used to maintain 0.5 to 2 wt% iron in the product matte. The slag losses are comparable to those obtained under similar industrial conditions. Due to the highly oxidizing conditions required to produce mattes with low iron contents, it is not recommended to target iron contents below about 2% in the matte. The specific bath smelting rates were equal to or higher than those in various industrial bath smelting processes.

Mine dust is the most serious occupation hazard in coalmines. And many coal workers suffer from pneumoconiosis because of long-term inhalation of respirable dust. Reducing the dust concentration of workplaces by effective technical means is an important way to prevent coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP). In order to overcome deficiencies in existing dust control technology for underground mining, especially the disadvantage of water spray technology mounted on roadheaders or continuous miners, the authors developed an integrated dust suppression technology utilising foam for fully mechanised heading faces. This paper presents an overview of the principles, materials, equipment and application of this technology. Among these, a jet type foaming device and a green foaming agent were developed, which can realise the goal of efficient preparation of foam. In addition, an arc fan nozzle used for foam spraying was invented, which can effectively cover and enwrap the dust produced by the roadheader at the cutting point and achieve the goal of efficient utilisation of foam. This dust suppression application of the proposed foam technology was investigated on fully mechanised heading faces. The results show that the dust concentration was cut down significantly with a dust suppression efficiency of greater than 85 per cent, an increase of over 30 percentage points compared to the water spray system. This study demonstrates that this foam technology can play an important role in dust suppression on fully mechanised heading faces, which provides an important method to improve the working environment and protect coal workers’ health.CITATION:Wang, D and Wang, H, 2015. Central to any business is its Asset Management Plan which encapsulates the business context and key organisational objectives such as profitability, safety and environmental standards. Life Cycle Planning (LCP) is a key component of an overall Asset Management Plan. A comprehensive approach to Life Cycle Planning forecasts the financial expenditure required to support the performance of the asset over the business life. It incorporates capital, maintenance and operational expenditure along with an estimation of economic life. Within its body the LCP provides the detail of the maintenance plan and method of its execution. Once optimised the LCP becomes the overarching plan executed through the application of several elements of the Asset Management Plan to ensure the return on investment from the assets is optimal. Each of the elements of the LCP is bound by a set of loops that provide information based on the analysis of outcomes. These loops drive the continuous improvement of performance and cost over the life of the asset. In this way we ensure that the LCP is a dynamic plan responsive to the changing business environment. The paper being presented today will describe the process undertaken and the outcomes derived when this approach was applied to a $600 M+ coal handling and preparation plant in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin. It will also delve into the difficulties encountered from both technical and cultural aspects; the latter proving to be the most difficult to manage. It will describe the hurdles and barriers that hampered progress including the human influences and the natural desire to revert to what has been done in the past when things became a bit difficult. In the end the results are there to show that the upfront expenditure and investment in time was time and money well spent and the outcome has the operation well placed to manage the assets in a manner designed to deliver the optimal business outcome.

Magnesium oxysulfate cement has been specially formulated as a sealant in underground coal mines for reducing sloughing of shale roofs and coal ribs, for reducing air losses through block stoppings, for constructing sprayed stop-pings over approved jute cloth or metal lath, and for reducing combustibility of polyurethane foam. A standard spray machine (Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) approved) was used for the underground testing. Our research shows that a 1/2-inch coating reduces shale and coal sloughing, reduces air losses through block stoppings, and prevents fire propagation through a metal tunnel lined with polyurethane foam. During the underground tests, excess mixing water was used to improve pumping the slurry to the spray nozzle. This was later found to increase shrinkage cracks in the cured coatings. Controlling excess water is important to an acceptable coating.

In these days, when mass production seems to be the watchword of all industrial companies, nothing is left undone to attain this end. Transportation, where necessary, becomes a question of very great importance. For this reason every mechanical contrivance known to man is employed, with its resultant advantages. So successful has man's ingenuity been that, offhand, we are inclined to say that practically all transportation ?On a large scale is done mechanically, that is, where speed and economy are desiderata. Granting this, one would think that to read a paper on the horse before your honourable and highly technical Society would surely be a waste of time, and that any Company employing old-fashioned 'horse' power would certainly be very much behind the time, to say the least. However, the fact remains that the biggest industry in our country today-coal mining-must use horse power to a great extent, being compelled both by considerations of economy and by necessity. For this reason,' in the production of coal under present conditions, the pit horse is of great importance to this industry and is to be considered seriously as one of the units that help to make coal mining a success or a failure. Hence, in employing horses as a power for transportation, care must be exercised in selecting the animals, and the care of this power must be considered as seriously as any other department of such an organization. In selecting a pit horse, several things must be borne in mind, that is, one must get as much horse power as possible in as compact a form is practicable. This determines the type of horse we must use, which is of very great importance under our present conditions of coal mining. With low roof, steep grades, and forced production, a distinct type of animal must be selected.

The need to comply with environmental regulations and increase production has resulted in modifications to the East Penn blast furnace operation. Changes made include furnace design modifications, closed loop water cooling with heat recovery, automated weighing and charging, automated tuyere punching, ammonia scrubbing of tail gases and improved metal and slag handling to minimize environmental impact. These changes have resulted in a marked increase in yearly production and compliance with many of the air, water and solid waste regulations.

"Exampling of the tunneling task in the Tsengwen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion (TRTD) in southern Taiwan, this study investigates the application of the Drilling Survey System (DRISS) in both Drilling and Blasting (D&B)- and Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)-excavated sections. In the D&B section, a nonlinear relationship exists between drilling energy and uniaxial compressive strength of rock mass, in which a reasonable coefficient of determination can be analyzed statistically. Additionally, the DRISS accurately predicted an unfavorable section with a valuable position. The magnitude of uniaxial compressive strength back calculated using DRISS data also matches those acquired from geological investigations with different approaches. Study results indicate that the DRISS is an effective tool for fore-probing of both D&B- and TBM-excavated tunnels. INTRODUCTIONModern advancements in geological and geophysical investigations, and drilling techniques, have provided valuable information for detecting and interpreting geological conditions of rock tunnels with a resolution of several to ten of meters (Brückl et al., 2001, 2008, Lorang et al., 2005). Nevertheless, construction risks remain considerable during tunnel excavation, especially when a tunnel was excavated by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Predictions of the local fault, shear zone, and other minor geological features, which may cause moderate collapse or excessive deformation of rocks surrounding the tunnel, before tunnel excavation is highly desirable for high-quality tunnel construction and economically efficient project management.Rather than conventional geophysical prospection methodologies, which always favor large-scale investigation with moderate precision, this study focuses on the drilling method probing ahead of a tunnel. The goal of such an investigation is not only to prevent catastrophic collapse, but also to provide quantitative or semi-quantitative information for estimation of the mechanical parameters of rock mass.For the tunneling task in the Tsengwen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion (TRTD) in southern Taiwan, a drilling survey system is adopted for fore probing. Data collected from both drilling and blasting (D&B) and TBM-excavated sections are analyzed statistically and discussed. "An experimental study of chemically enhanced filtration and dewatering of fine coal slurry with and without additives was carried out. The experiment involved determination of effect of slurry concentration, additives (cationic, anionic and nonionic), filter area, filtration velocity, particle size and cake resistance on dewatering and filtration using vacuum filtration cell. Finally, the rate of filtration and dewatering and optimum amount of additives used were determined under suitable filtration condition. Overall, it was found that the filtration and dewatering characteristics were enhanced by increased slurry concentration, larger filter area and larger particle size. In addition of additives, the kerosene was found to be best for enhancing the filtration which yielded cake moisture reductions of approximately 17% by weight. At optimum dosages, the final cake moisture contents were reduced by 3.6% and 5.8% by weight using the appropriate surfactant and flocculent, respectively.INTRODUCTIONFor India, it is estimated that coal constitute a principal source of energy for the next several decades. It is majorly used at thermal power plants to generate electricity and also to a great extent in steel and cement industry. It has been observed that its consumption is increasing so as to meet the energy requirements of the country. It has been found that in a coal preparation plant; approximately 20-25 percent coal is of the mined coal of the range below minus 0.5 mm (28 meshes). Generally, this fine fraction is discarded due to its high cost of processing and further utilisatisation is very minimal. But with ongoing research and development for advanced clean coal technology, various new techniques have been evolved to maximize the utilization of available coal. In recent time technologies such as column flotation, cleaning of fine size coal to lower the ash content and low pyretic sulfur is feasible at high recovery value. But in various researches it is found that one of the biggest hurdles in utilization of fine coal cleaning technology by the coal industry is the economic dewatering of the fine clean coal product. Thus, until an economical and practical solution to dewatering of fine clean coal is achieved, the efforts devoted to developing fine clean coal technology will be wasted. In this paper an effort toward enhancing and developing the optimum technique of dewatering and filtration of fine coal slurry has been made."

"Times Square, arguably one of the best-known destinations in the world, has undergone and continues to undergo a re-development aimed at attracting corporate tenants to the area. Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers (MRCE) was involved with the planning, design and construction of the foundations for the Conde Nast and 5 Times Square sites, as well as Times Square Tower. These sites are pictured in Figure 1.This paper will focus on the design and construction of the deep foundations for Times Square Tower that was developed by Boston Properties. PROJECT DESCRIPTIONTimes Square Tower is 47 stories tall, with no setbacks and an overall height to top of crown of 730 feet (222.5m). It has two basement levels extending 30 feet (9m) below grade over the full site. As shown in Figure 1, the structure occupies the entire site and has a footprint of 22,000 square feet (2,044 m2), with a total rentable area of about 1.2 million square feet (111,480 m2). The planned use for the building is office space with retail at the ground level. When completed, Times Square Tower was the final building constructed as part of the Revitalization of Times Square. Due to the site constraints, designing and constructing the foundations was akin to placing the final piece of a puzzle.Times Square Tower provided numerous design and construction challenges that were a result of tight working conditions, heavy column loads, and a compressed schedule.GEOLOGIC SETTING AND SITE HISTORYThe Times Square area is part of the Manhattan Prong called the Manhattan Ridge, a formation of old and durable metamorphosed and folded bedrock, now termed the Hartland Formation. The bedrock generally has a thin soil cover and uneven surface overlain in some areas with a thin mantle of decomposed and/or weathered rock. Overburden soils include glacial and post-glacial deposits and recent fills.Transit improvements have been made in and around the Times Square area since the early 1900’s. The 1, 2 and 3 Subway Lines that run below 7th Avenue were constructed circa 1915 using cut and cover techniques and extend about 28 feet (8.5m) below grade. The N, R, Q & W Subway Lines that run below Broadway were also constructed in 1915 using cut and cover techniques and extend about 38 feet (11.6m) below grade. The 7 Line that runs below 41st Street was constructed later, using both cut-and-cover and tunneling methods as it runs below the other subway structures at a depth of about 55 feet (16.8m) below grade."
