In 1990, the Bureau of Mines (BOM) conducted a mineral investigation of the mines and prospects in the East Mojave National Scenic Area (EMNSA), San Bernardino County, California During field work, BOM identified 701 mines and prospects in EMNSA for which the geology, mineral resources, and mining history were compiled and summarized. Analytical results for 1,188 rock samples collected are tabulated. Total value of identified resources in EMNSA is $5.0 billion. Twenty-four mines and prospects were deemed profitable under current economic conditions. Development could generate considerable economic benefits to San Bernardino County. Potential economic benefits from mining the deposits were evaluated under the following access restrictions for EMNSA: 1) full access, 2) HR 3460, and 3) S 11/HR 780. Under the full access scenario, cumulative mine revenues are $3.0 billion, cumulative personal earnings at mines and supporting industries are $0.94 billion, and annual jobs at mines and supporting industries are 2,379. Under HR 3460, mine revenues, personal earnings, and annual jobs are $2.9 billion, $0.88 billion, and 2,165, respectively. Under S 11/HR 780, mine revenues, personal earnings, and annual jobs are $1.0 billion, $0.32 billion, and 936, respectively.

The use of an integrated software package to simulate and optimize the performance of mineral processing circuits is illustrated by three examples. Each represents application of the software and associated techniques to optimization of an existing plant. In the first example, a South-western U. S. copper company employs the method to simulate and improve performance in crushing, screening and SAG milling. A second copper producer evaluates equipment changes and flowsheet alternatives in a closed-circuit ball mill-cyclone operation. A Southeastern U. S. aluminum refinery optimizes performance of a dry milling and classification circuit for production of carbon particles used in anode casting. Graphical and tabular data describe the circuits simulated and the results achieved in each example.

The Argentine pyroclastic loess arevulcanogenic deposits, which have their sources in the circumnpacific rim. The object of this work is to realize a de-tailed mineralogical characterization of this sediments, to use it like a geo logic outline which regiters discordance or similarity in them, The sampling zone extend from 714N-4125 to 622W-339S. The descriptions of these sediments was considered like basic, mesobasic or acid rocks. The basic sediments, looking like andesite-basaltic composition, are fill-ing the andean valley. The mesobasic one have a similar composition with a pyro-clastic dacite rock, and have been found in marshy pleistocene sediments in the intermountain valley and in the pampeana prairies. The acid ashed conform rhyoda-cite-rhyolite sediments which form the pampeana loess covers in the prairie.

Scarcely a month goes by that I or someone else at Newmont Mining or Newmont Gold isn't asked to give a talk on the topic I was asked to discuss today. Investors, financial analysts, geologists, metallurgists, even our government--everybody wants to know what the future holds for gold mining. Well, you're not going to get exactly what you asked for. Today, I'm prepared to focus primarily not on what the future will bring to us, but rather on what the future will demand from us. More than that, I cannot undertake because it isn't within my scope to predict how wise and resourceful everyone in our industry will be in the future. What our future will hold, as I see it, will depend on our--and our colleagues'-- responses to these very real demands. Three critical issues stand out in my mind as to what the future will demand of us in the gold mining industry. And these demands will be for: 1. The very greatest of technical expertise and innovation. 2. The highest order of environmental sensitivity and timely accommodation. 3. Planning, planning and more planning. All of these flow inexorably today from the traditional objective of any mining company--or any company in any business, and that is, to make money. Nothing as I see it, should be undertaken by a geologist, metallurgist or even an environmental department, unless the exercises will enhance profits; and nothing may be ignored which can have consequent damage to the bottom line. Thus, the three issues I've listed for you subordinate themselves to the objective of making money, although at least in the environmental area, it might seem to some that we can only incur additional costs without even a dollar-for-dollar return. I hope to disabuse you today of any such out-of-date notion. Let's tackle the first issue-- Technical Expertise and Innovation. Newmont Gold Company this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary of successful and profitable operations on the Carlin Trend. Carlin in 1961, which is when exploration began on the "Trend" by Newmont, actually may share a lot of similarities with Carlin today. They didn't then know where the gold was and, if they found it, they had one hell of a challenge mining and processing ore at a profit because gold was selling at only $35 an ounce. Today, we know where the current reserves are. But we don't know where our future reserves lie. Furthermore, we don't know exactly how we're going to mine them, and, as everyone here knows too well, we don't know what the optimum metallurgical treatment is, even if we can find and mine them. And all that despite the abundant level of modern experience and skills within the current generation of mining companies, and the fact that, even taking inflation into account, gold sells at a higher price today than in 1965 when Carlin began operations. But, of course, I'm telling you what you already know.

"SummaryAs part of an effort.to understand the mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal, which is important in studies of respirable dust due to mining, fracture toughness measurements and the strain energy density (SEO) theory were applied to calculate the crush zone size under a cutting tool in coal. This · zone is the major source of fine fragments in the 1 to 10 µm size range. The model used in these calculations is a boundary element program containing a failure criterion based on the SEO theory. The boundary element program calculates linear elastic stresses at numerous points in the coal material ahead of a cutting bit. These stresses arc then input to a subroutine called critical ftaw length and orientation (CFLO) which uses the SED theory to determine the CFLO for a small crack at the boundary element stress computation point. The extent of crushing is based on earlier postulates about . the role of inherent flaws in a fragmentation process. To form 1 to 10 µm fragments requires firstly a local stress strong enough to activate flaws with a characteristic length less than 1 to 10 µm and secondly, a flaw density sufficient to provide an average spacing between flaws also on the order of 1 to 10 µm. The locus of active lO µm ftaws represents the maximum possible extent of fine fragmentation in the 10 µm or less size range assuming that a sufficient inherent flaw density exists. The approach offers a first order approximation to the extent of crushing under a tool tip. The size and shape of the crush zone volume is affected by the attack angle and geometry of the tool.IntroductionFine fragment generation in the 1 to 10 µm size range under the action of a generic coal cutting tool may be explained on the basis of fracture mechanics which suggests two major sources of fine fragments: first in a crush zone near the tool tip and second by shear fracturing. along major macrocrack surfaces (Zipf and Bieniawski, 1988a). In this paper, fracture toughness measurements and the strain energy density theory are used to calculate the crush zone size. This zone represents the major source of fine fragments in the 1 to 10 µm size range and understanding the mechanical factors controlling its size represents a first step toward using fracture mechanics to characterize the ·tendency of various coals to produce undesirable fine fragments."

"IntroductionThe combined library facilities of the five universities in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust, The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University, represent one of the most extensive and comprehensive collections of information on respirable dust research which is available in the United States. The Center encompasses two major medical schools, the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at The Pennsylvania State University and .West Virginia University Hospital at West Virginia University, and includes national and international experts from such diverse disciplines as geology, geomechanics, mining engineering, mineral processing, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, material science, physics and several areas of medicine. In order to maximize achievements in research and facilitate early results application in the private industry, university, government and public sectors, a geographically dispersed Reference Center on Respirable Dust has been established at each of the affiliated universities. This network serves to encourage unity between the universities in the Center and coordination and communication with other entities who benefit from their research.Description of the Reference CenterIn this light, the goal of the Reference Center network is to identify at what location Information is available and to provide a means for others to access this information. It is especially necessary to have both ease of input and maximum retrieval capabilities available to all the research personnel in the Reference Center. At the same time, the service provided to the inquiring public must be complete and cost-effective. The Center's approach to realizing this goal incorporates advances in computerized and electronic searching of individual library holdings and the networking of major library and commercial search systems.The Reference Center uses the following means to achieve this goal. At each participating university, a hard copy collection ls maintained of the current respirable dust research in progress by that institution's personnel. Also, available. at each university ls a review of their past and present research on respirable dust. At each participating university a hard copy collection of annual status reports and of all publications produced by Center personnel for symposiums, national and international conferences ls maintained. A key word computer search capability ls available to participating universities. This computer search, by title, author and location, allows researchers to determine at which facility information is available, thus avoiding the tremendous expense and effort of housing all the information on respirable dust research under one roof. "IntroductionRecognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries, Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs.To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made throughout the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous research studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984).The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. In addition, several findings concerning characterization methods will be presented"

"This paper outlines some of the work associated with a research study into the relationship between the characteristics of coal mine dust and the incidence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). The project involves study of the chemical, mineralogical, and morphological characteristics of the dust. Early stages of the study have dealt primarily with the size analysis and elemental composition of airborne dust in continuous miner sections. This paper outlines the procedures and findings of the elemental analysis portion of the study.Most of the previous elemental analyses of coal were made available in the quest for information on the combustibility of coal dust or on causal agents and prevalence of CWP. However, no extensive studies have been performed to date, primarily due to the limitations of the analytical methods. A review of the analytical methods for elemental characterization of coal and coal dust particles is presented. TI1e comparisons are made based on the sample mass required, the sample preparation required, the destructivity of the test, and the capability of providing an easy multi-element analysis. The reasons for selecting the proton-induced x-ray emission spectroscopy (PIXE) method are outlined.The PIXE method was applied to both the airborne coal mine dust and channel samples collected from seven continuous miner sections in six different mines. Channel samples of the coal, roof and floor were collected and analyzed. Airborne dust sampling was performed using multi-stage cascade impactors and permissible 2.0 I/min pumps. Sampler locations were fixed in the sections with respect to the continuous miner and roof bolter or with respect to the intake and return airways. Sampling times varied from 45 minutes to 6 hours, depending on the dust concentration.The statistical analysis of the resulting elemental data is presented. Of particular importance are the analyses of the variation of elemental composition with size and the variation in elemental composition over the working section. One interesting finding is outlined showing the multivariate statistical analysis of the trace elements and its implications in the identification of the dust sources. The paper concludes with an analysis of the ramifications of the elemental data to related medical studies."

"IntroductionIt is commonly understood that aerosol particles may be injurious to human health if they are of a size that enables them to enter the respiratory tract. Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is one disease known to be caused by coal mining related particles.The location in the respiratory tract where the particles are deposited is primarily a function of the equivalent aerodynamic diameter (EAD) of the particle. The equivalent aerodynamic diameter is the diameter of a spherical particle with a density of 1.0 gm/cm3 with the same falling speed as the particle in question. For a spherical particle the calculation is rather simple in that the equivalent aerodynamic diameter is simply the diameter of the particle in question multiplied by the square root of the density of the particle. For irregularly shaped particles, such as coal particles, there is no simple way to make the EAD calculation. For example, Figure 1 is only one of an infinite variety of particle shapes that can be found in practice and the aerodynamic size of this particle and, therefore, its deposition location in the respiratory tract would be nearly impos-sible to estimate accurately.The normal method for determining the aerodynamic diameter of particles has been to experimentally measure the size of the particles in a settling chamber or with an inertial classifier such as an impactor, cyclone or a centrifuge, since inertial classifiers have the property of classifying the particles according to their aerodynamic diameters."") However, these devices can only give limited information on the EAD of a single particle with a specific shape. Impactors and cyclones, for example, collect particles in size ranges and not at a specific size, so the determination of the EAD of a specific particle is not possible. A centrifuge, on the other hand, can measure the EAD of a specific particle but the equipment is costly and procedure laborious, and it may not be possible to disperse a particle of a specific shape into the centrifuge. The centrifuge can be used to determine the EAD of clusters of spheres in various arrays, but introducing particles of a specific irregular shape may not be feasible. Furthermore, the EAD is a function of the orientation of an irregularly shaped particle and the orientation of a particle in an inertial classifier is unknown. The orientation may also vary as the particle passes through the classifier.Because of the difficulty in determining the EAD of an irregularly shaped particle, we have undertaken a program to apply theoretical numerical methods to calculate the EAD of any shape particle. In our laboratory we have, for some time, been using numerical methods to determine the flow field of air within instruments such as impactors, (2) inlets, (3) and virtual impactors (4) Recently, this technique has been expanded into the three-dimensional regime, and the flow fields and particle motion characteristics within cyclones (5) and glove boxes have been studied. We have now begun to use these numerical three-dimensional flow programs to study the flow field around irregularly shaped particles to determine their drag coefficients, falling speed, and thus, their EAD."

"This paper presents an interim progress report on our recently begun research project on respirable dusts. We are reporting on a sophisticated, predictive, probably correct, testable hypothesis that postulates a mechanism by which some natively cytotoxic respirable size mineral particles, such as kaolin, are not harmful to the lungs, while other equally cytotoxic particles, such as quartz, are, even in small quantities, very harmful. In essence the hypothesis predicts that some mineral particles, not normally present in the earth's ambient dust, causes the lungs dust defense mechanisms to turn on the lung and harm it. However fruitful the hypothesis may be, it is a hypothesis and much work remains to be done before it can be accepted as a theory.While I may make the presentation and be the PI, my co-PI, Dr. William Wallace of NIOSH, has and will continue to make at least as much contribution to the project as I. Our sophisticated hypothesis is deeply scientifically based and unfortunately, in spite of the multifacited aspects of this project, there is virtually nothing in the literature to guide our work. This means we must go back to the classical physics to develop the models for calculating the powerful electrical effects near particle edges, and we must measure the fundamental biological constants associated with pulmonary macrophage. While there are daily discussions on Boltzman distributions, Einstein's Brownian Motion paper, the Nernst Equation, and sophisticated semi- in vivo biological time constant measurements, we are aware that this is not an easy problem and we are not likely to have irrefutable closed solutions to these problems by next Monday morning.HypothesisLet me now turn to our hypothesis. In order to occupy all the naturally occurring surface areas on the earth, man, during his long evolution from fish, had to evolve effective defenses against all the naturally occurring cytotoxic rcspirable mineral dusts. For example, clays, which are often the main component in naturally occurring respirable mineral dusts, are quite cytotoxic but do not harm the lung. However, for respirable mineral dusts that contain significant amounts of nonnaturally occurring but equally cytotoxic quartz and asbestos particles, the body has not had to evolve- an effective defense mechanism, and thus respirable mineral dusts containing these particles may harm the lung. Our hypothesis is, therefore, that a few nonambient minerals such as quartz, cause the bodies dust defensive system to harm the body in a manner analogous to Lupus or MS, diseases of the immune system."

Exploration programs for mineral resources often involve analysis of soils or stream sediments for the mineral being sought or its pathfinders. Because many metals are toxic to microorganisms, patterns of metal resistance in soil or aquatic populations may provide additional useful information at a reasonable coat. These patterns in some cases have been more effective than the soil geo-chemistry and may be easier to obtain. Elevated levels of resistance to silver and its path-finders have been demonstrated in stream populations from an area of known silver deposits, and resistance to gold pathfinders has been demonstrated for gold-bearing areas. Uranium has also been located by this method.

The valuation of resources companies is open to a huge amount of subjectivity. Not only are valuations subject to fast changing assumptions, such as commodity prices, exchange rates, ore grades, etc., but there is also no common agreement on the methodology to be used. To borrow from Malcolm Fraser, life wasn't meant to be easy for the resource company valuer. I will demonstrate three recent examples of valuations carried out but where the market or actual transactions done show very different results.

"The clearing of tuyeres on copper and nickel converters or similar metallurgical, vessels has, for many years, been done using mainly a manually- operated ""puncher"". One such device is the ""Gaspe Puncher"" developed in 1962 at Noranda's Gaspe Smelter. In an attempt to remove the operator from the cab of the Puncher, and to relieve him of a tedious, uncomfortable job, Noranda's Horne Division, in cooperation with Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited and the Noranda Research Centre, undertook to automate the Gaspe Puncher used on the Noranda Continuous Smelting Process Reactor.The automated puncher is controlled by a Texas Instruments Model 530C Programmable Controller (PLC). Position measurement and control is done using non-contact position measuring equipment from the Tele-Controls Division of Geodimeter Inc. The entire automation system was installed on an existing Gaspe Puncher with minimum disruption to the operation of the smelting process. The operator's panel allows the user to ""block out"" any individual tuyere, and to select any of a variety of operating modes.The development of the automated puncher is described, and the results of several months operation are given.IntroductionThe tuyeres of copper and nickel converters and similar metallurgical vessels become blocked with solidified material formed by the cooling action of the blowing air. This restricts the converting operation. Clearing these blocked tuyeres has for many years been done mainly using a manually-operated ""puncher"" which uses a hydraulic or pneumatically-operated piston to drive a steel bar into the tuyere. The Gaspe Puncher, developed at Noranda's Gaspe Smelter in 1962 is one such device. It is currently being built and sold by Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited, under license to Noranda. There are over 200 units in operation world-wide.In an attempt to remove the Puncher operator from the cab of the Puncher, and to relieve him of a tedious, uncomfortable job, and to increase productivity, Noranda's Horne Division, in cooperation with Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited and the Noranda Research Centre, undertook to automate the Gaspe Puncher used on the Noranda Continuous Smelting Process Reactor. This paper describes the development of the automated Gaspe Puncher, its installation at the Horne Smelter, and the results of its operation after several months."

"IntroductionThe leaching method selected for the dissolving of uranium ore depends in part on the physical characteristics of the ore, as well as the uranium mineralization. There are two main methods of leaching employed in uranium circuits in North America, one being ""Carbonate Leaching"" on sandstone, and pitchblende type ores, and ""Acid Leaching"", on quartzite type ores.This chapter deals with the acid leaching of uranium ores found in the Elliot Lake area, using sulphuric acid, for the leaching reagent, and ""pachucas"" for the contactor.The basic leaching process involves the pregrinding of the ore and the mixing of the ore with hot sulphuric acid, the mixture is air agitated, the air being used to oxidize the ore as well as produce agitation. The chemical reaction is as follows: Uranium Oxide + Sulphuric Acid = Uranyl SulphateThe following equations show the actual dissolution of the ""Hexavalent Uranium"", which show that more than one ion or complex of uranium is possible.Uranium DissolutionsI. A very important factor that has to be determined during initial test work are the amount of acid consumers in the ore. Within the Elliot Lake orebodies are minerals such as chlorite schist, diabase, and basement material, all very high acid consumers, consuming up to 1000 lbs. of acid per ton of ore. Gravity concentration has been the main method for tin ore beneficiation, based on the significant difference of density between cassiterite and gangue in the tin ore. However, with the exhaustion of rich and coarse reserves, the proportion of tin distribution in slime be-comes as high as 50 to 70% and has a size range of -19 urn. In some sulfide tin ore, most of the tin is of the minus 10-urn size fraction, and thus slime processing has gained importance in tin ore processing. Some innovations are being developed, such as the centrifugal cone separator, belt concentrator, slime table, B-M separator, and slime flotation. Direct flotation with tolyl arsonic acid has been practiced with success.

"This paper is based on the development of the Maza-Austin technique for characterizing thousands of coal particles by approximate analysis of the major inorganic constituents Ca, Al, Si, K, Na, Fe and S in each particle. The technique has sufficient sensitivity to work on small volumes, is fast enough to handle large number of particles within a reasonable period of time, and consists of scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (SEK-EDS). A computerized SEK-EDS system that allows the automated analysis of hundreds of coal particles per hour' is described. The analysis is based on the location and tracing of coal particles embedded in a polished specimen, the selection of sampling points on the traced particles, the collection of an x-ray spectrum from each sampled point for a defined period of time, and the processing of the x-ray intensity to calculate point composition using ZAF corrections. Procedures for correcting for dead time, background, detector efficiency and spectrum overlap are described. These corrections are essential if reasonably accurate analyses are to be obtained from unknown complex mixtures of the elements in a coal or fly ash particle. Examples are given. INTRODUCTION Coal is a complex mixture of organic and inorganic materials. The inorganic fraction is referred to as mineral matter (Gluskoter, 1978) but can occur in three modes: (i) an observable mineral species; (ii) as cations held by ion exchange to carboxylic groups; and (iii) in chelate complexes. The mineral matter content normally represents a significant proportion of a coal, with an average value of about 15% for US coals (Gluskoter, 1975). The standard methods of analysis of the mineral matter in coals are performed on a sample selected to represent the whole coal as closely as possible, and give the overall inorganic composition in the coal. Such analyses are of limited use for solving problems originating from the behavior of individual coal particles, whose compositions vary widely from the average value. This is particularly true in pulverized coal combustion, where the current methods of predicting the slagging and ·fouling potential of a coal are based on the bulk ash composition, but the fly ash particles which create the deposits originate from coal particles with large differences in mineral compo1ition. Some examples can be found where, in a comparison between two coals, the one with the smaller slagging potential according to the mean ash composition was the one that behaved worst in the furnace (Moza et al., 1980; Koza and Austin, 1983). The u1e of gravity fractionation to assess the slagging potential of pulverized coals has shown that conventional ASTM analysis is not sensitive to differences in the distribution of mineral matter when comparing coals (Borio and Narciso, 1979). The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory study to determine what effect use of water-jet-assisted cutting has on frictional-ignition suppression. A single bit with a steel tip, installed on a rotating drum, repeatedly made 22-in-long cuts in a block of Berea sandstone. The drum was operated in an enclosure that contained an explosive methane-air mixture. High-pressure front-mounted water jets operating at 2,000 to 5,000 psig and low-pressure rear-mounted sprays operating at 80 psig were used; the number of ignitions that occurred with each type of spray was compared. The rear-mounted spray was more effective for preventing frictional ignitions than the front-mounted water jet.

The database accumulated by such systems broaden process knowledge, thereby reducing costly errors and plant downtime.IntroductionThe ASARCO Hayden Plant is located approximately 80 miles southeast of Phoenix, Arizona. The plant was commissioned in 1912 for the purpose of smelting copper concentrates from the surrounding mining district. Copper was produced for many years using calcining, reverberatory smelting and copper converting techniques. With the stricter environmental controls of the 1970's, the smelter experienced substantial declines in efficiency and productivity. It became necessary to identify and install a new smelting technology to maintain the viability of the Hayden plant.In 1980, after evaluating several smelting techniques, ASARCO management selected flash smelting as developed by International Nickel Company (INCO). One hundred and thirty-two million dollars was allocated for the project and construction began in 1982. Construction was completed and the new plant came on line in November of 1983."
