What is a conflict, as it is understood by men of the extractive industries? And what are the circumstances out of which these conflicts arise? A start can be made with the notion of economic conflict, which can be defined as rivalry over the use of economic resources. Such rivalry is a central part of all economizing activity. It is present within the individual, within the family, and within the business firm. In each of these units there are multiple goals competing for use of a limited income. And economic rivalry is present among individuals and firms who are competing with one another for use of the limited quantity of economic resources available to us as a society.

Rock blasting is a crucial technique employed in mining construction and quarrying industries to fragment large rocks into smaller, more manageable pieces. However, it often generates ground vibrations that can pose significant challenges. This study explores the application of Conformal Prediction (CP) in the context of rock blasting to develop predictive models that estimate blasting-induced vibrations and quantify the associated uncertainties. Various machine learning models were integrated within the CP framework using MAPIE and CREPES libraries. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of CP in providing statistically reliable prediction intervals, making it particularly useful for applications where the stakes of underestimating uncertainty can be high.

The authors have been interested in stress measurements in the rock mass for a long time. This paper describes the development of new apparatus for stress measurements in a rock mass. The principle of stress measurement by this device is based on the relief method as applied on the conical shaped surface of the bottom of a borehole. The design started based on the experience of K. Sugawara and Y. Obara who have been using the compact conical borehole over-coring system (CCBO). The conical shape of the strain gauge probe CCBO makes the fixation of the probe in borehole easy and, also, makes the measurement of stress in independent directions possible. The principle of the measuring method, the preparation of the borehole, the design of the probe for continuous measurement of stress during the course of overcoring are described. Also, a simplified version of the probe for long term monitoring of stress variations in the rock mass by means of the inserted body method and the initial laboratory results and in-situ testing of the development sample are described. Additionally, testing was done regarding the possible glues in relationship to the creep effect for this case.

This paper presents methods of implementation and the added value that can be achieved by connecting personnel tracking systems and alarm-broadcasting systems. The authors point out the functions of the two systems that enable cooperation between them. Methods for connecting the systems on the surface and underground areas of mines require some intervention in both systems, so the authors point out a possible phased approach to introducing cooperation methods. Due to the fact that tracking systems in Polish mines are at an early stage of implementation, the article aims to provide new functionality, attempts to identify the needs of future users, and describes the experience of both production companies in terms of the development of cooperation methods.

One of the CIM 2003 conference themes is ?Globalization and the impact on mine operations?. In this context, the first official version of the new ?International Rock Excavation Data Exchange Standard? (IREDES) is being released. This new standard is a highly flexible data interface for exchange of information between production equipment and central computer systems. The standard was defined by global players in the mining industry and will soon be used to enhance local operations of global mining companies. Beside the standard definition now other aspects are coming into focus: The question how to design and how to implement IREDES compliant data exchange in practice. Implementation of IREDES covers the following aspects: !" Implementation on in-field production systems !" Communication and networking !" Implementation on databases and commercial IT systems In-field production systems are characterized by a big variety of different automation systems. Therefor, different IREDES implementation philosophies have to apply to those systems. One philosophy uses an integrated IREDES compliant automation system on every machine. The alternative method uses one shared IREDES compliant ?Proxy server? for a number of machines connected to this server using proprietary interfaces. Communication and networking can be integrated openly and independently from hardware infrastructures. The only precondition is that communication and networking has to be Ethernet - TCP/IP protocol compatible. IREDES Implementation on the commercial IT level means to exchange IREDES data sets with databases, simulation software, office packages and special applications. Interfacing is easy as long as the software or the database system provides an interface to the Extensible Markup Language (XML).

Conveyor belts are a critical component in tunneling projects. This paper reviews current design considerations for conveyor belts. Rubber compounding differences to meet local fire resistance regulations or certain cover characteristics such as higher abrasion resistance or low carbon footprint rubbers for applications are reviewed. Evaluation of fabric belts, steel cable belts and the benefits of each carcass design for a particular use is also examined to help with proper carcass selection to decrease downtime from unexpected failures. Finally, this paper takes a look at some of the differences when working in metric versus imperial units.

There are many aspects of a grinding mill supply and installation that can result in the mill not operating as intended, resulting in unplanned shutdowns, poor reliability and headaches for all concerned. One of the largest aspects, both in criticality and physical mass, is the mill foundation; if not properly specified, designed and constructed the mill operation will be compromised. The mill foundation starts with the design specification and loading diagram supplied by the mill builder. The importance of understanding these documents and how to apply them is critical for the start of any mill project. When designing mills with a GMD the foundation must be properly modeled to ensure that all interactions of the mill and motor structures, foundation and subsurface strata behave in the intended fashion. All of the previous efforts can be laid to waste if the construction of the mill foundation is poorly handled. Mill foundations are typically the most massive concrete structure at a processing plant and can easily cause nightmares for inexperienced contactors. This paper explores some of the more important facets along the lifecycle of the grinding mill foundation.

"INTRODUCTION The characterization of groundwater hydrogeology is a common component in feasibility studies, geotechnical investigations and regulatory permitting for mining operations. The lithology at a location of interest may include several discrete water-bearing units; and the means of isolating each for testing can be accomplished through the use of inflatable packers. Consideration for testing during drilling program planning and communication between all stakeholders is essential to ensure that the Mine, Drilling Contractor and Hydrogeological Testing Specialist (Specialist) are ready to perform packer testing when the call is made to mobilize. Often, the notice to mobilize can be delayed and then occur with little warning due to the issues that can occur during drilling of very deep boreholes, as well as other factors. Hydrogeological investigation reports and journal articles generally discuss testing methods and results, with limited information available describing the planning and coordination of the field testing program, as evidenced by the lack of references cited below. The source of inspiration for the subject matter of this paper is grounded in the author’s past shortsightedness; with the hope that others not share similar misfortunes but experience success through thorough preparation for their future hydrogeological testing programs. The sections below focus on the planning stages of a field investigation using inflatable packers, including considerations for site specific conditions, designation of stakeholder responsibilities, and communication of testing expectations. Following these sections is a presentation of two examples of successful field programs and lessons learned in addressing problems encountered along the way. PRELIMINARY PROGRAM PLANNING & CONSIDERATIONS From the onset of planning for drilling programs, the Specialist should be in communication with the Mine to review plans and identify fatal flaws which could impede collection of hydrogeological data. Preliminary scope decisions can significantly affect the budget and duration of hydrogeological field programs and may dictate the means by which the field data is collected. The issues that need to be considered include the following factors. Testing Objectives The setup of the packer tool is dependent on the testing objectives. Is the goal to estimate bulk aquifer hydraulic conductivity or to identify discrete discontinuity hydraulic characteristics? Are groundwater samples needed? The answers to these questions affect selection of test interval length and what instrumentation might need to piggyback on the packer tool. Identifying the testing goals initially will provide adequate time to prepare packer equipment for mobilization. Borehole Size While inflatable packers come in many shapes and sizes, some sizes are more readily available and easier to procure on short notice. Packers for NQ and HQ size boreholes have been historically easy to procure and are commonly used in exploration drilling. Packer equipment is available for smaller holes, but it becomes more difficult to fit instrumentation down-hole as the borehole size decreases. This is particularly a consideration if collection of groundwater samples is required. In addition, risks of losing the hole or equipment downhole are greater for smaller boreholes. Larger boreholes require larger packers and clearly require more effort and heavier capacity machinery to manually manipulate due to the increased size."

Introduction Froth flotation is one of the most common unit engineering operations in use today. Its aim is to upgrade the quality of coal by removing ash/pyrite and separating selected minerals from undesired gangue materials. Flotation has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for more than 50 years. Its use is increasing due to the ever decreasing feed grades of the coals and minerals being processed. Flotation has also shown itself to be a flexible process that lends itself well to many solid/solid separations. Thus, with surprisingly little equipment modification, separations can involve very different particle sizes and densities, and relative weight ratios of materials to be separated. In addition, the flotation process is economic, especially when compared to size reduction, its associated precursor process. Flotation also lends itself to continuous operations with a given equipment configuration. The operation must exhibit an ability to vary feed rate of solid to the process by as much as 50% without a total collapse of separating efficiency. In addition, the mechanical flotation cell is scaleable from 2.8 to 57 or 85 m3 (100 to 2000 or 3000 cu ft) with surprising ease relative to other unit engineering operations over the same relative size increase. The separating medium used is water. Most of the chemicals required - pH regulators, frothers, collectors, activators, and depressants - are all relatively inexpensive and common. They are not usually used in large quantities. Froth flotation is certainly one of the most versatile and forgiving unit operations in the chemical, mining, and agricultural industries. The problem with the industrial flotation process is that it is fairly easy to get reasonable results and relatively difficult to get excellent results. Why is it so difficult to fine tune the froth flotation process? There are some obvious reasons and a few not-so-obvious factors. The obvious category would certainly contain the tendency of natural feed materials (ores and raw coals) to have variable physical, metallurgical, and surface properties. This occurs even when special care is taken to minimize such differences with blending. There is another obvious reason for difficulty. An inherent broadness of the feed particle size range to flotation results from using any of the common industrial-scalefine grinding devices - ball-, rod-, or autogenous mills. Research has been done into the chemical reagent and equipment aspects of flotation. It has shown strong interactions (limitations) of chemical reagents and equipment on larger and smaller particles. The point is that current flotation practice works best on average- or medium-sized feed particles. The greater the amount of large or small particles, or of both large and small, the more difficult it is to achieve excellent flotation results. Other reasonably obvious factors include: • variations in mineral type and liberation sizes; • water chemistry variations such as those involving Ca", C03, or Fe", or various soluble metal cations; • the presence of stray organic materials such as returning soluble reagents or partially degraded reagents in reuse water; • the lack of reliable on-line instrumentation for monitoring and control; • frequent equipment malfunctions of all types; • excessive feed rates for installed plant capacity; • poor operator interaction with the process; and • poor reagent dosage control. There are less obvious, but real limitations to flotation. These are inherent in the design and operating characteristics of the most common cell design in use today - the mechanical flotation cell. Individual performance attributes of the chemical reagents used, along with their manner of use, also carry limitations. The bulk of this paper will deal with chemical reagents and their use. Chemical reagents In 1979, the author and his co-workers were asked to invent and implement, at the industrial scale, new flotation reagent chemistry. After reviewing some of the literature (Sutherland and Wark, 1955; Klassen and Mokrousov, 1959; M. Fuerstenau, 1962; D. Fuerstenau, 1976; and Leja, 1982), a series of carefully controlled plant scale tests were set up. These tests were designed to understand existing reagent scale-up from the laboratory to the plant. They were to quantify at the plant level the effect of some of the more important, controllable chemical reagent factors (frother and collector type, frother and collector dosage, pH effects). This paper addresses considerations for the use of artificial support of pit walls in surface mines, a new project of the Bureau of Mines. Results to date indicate that a polymer-coated cable with embedded grit could provide good anchorage for stabilizing benches and highwalls, and an electronic method of recording discontinuities in the field is being reviewed and developed for application to mining. The objectives of the work in progress are to define the engineering parameters and evaluate the concepts for artificial supports in order to provide safe working environments when pit slopes are steepened to increase ore recovery and reduce overburden handling.

This paper exposes the reasons that led the Empresa Nacional Minera del Sahara, S.A. (ENMINSA) to the selection of a conveyor belt system for the transport of phosphate rock over a distance of 100 kilometers. ENMINSA was created in 1962, with the main objetive of the exploitation of phosphate rock deposits in the Spanish province of Sahara, in North West Africa. Poor grade outcrops were known previously. A detailed geological research carried over the province led ENMINSA to the discovery of deposits not exposed, and of much higher grade. The sector known as Bu-Craa was chosen as the most promising, and was explored by means of drill holing and shafting. The important amount of information obtained permitted a detailed evaluation of the capacity and grade of the rich ore contained in the Bu-Craa area. Simultaneously with the systematic reconnaissance of the Bu-Craa deposits, ENMINSA developped the study of the technical and economical problems required for the beneficiation of the rock, which comprised five main groups of projects: rock exploitation; beneficiation plant; rock transport from the mine site to the Atlantic coast; storage, handling and loading facilities by the sea- side, and power plant. Once determined the location of the marine loading facilities, which to date are in an advanced stage of construction (figs. 1 and 2), the studies conductive to the selection of the best transport system from the mine to the ocean, along 100 kms. distance were undertaken.

When austenite first forms from aggregates of cementite and ferrite, it is not homogeneous.' This inhomogeneity, consisting of both undissolved carbide and carbon concentration gradients, has a profound effect upon the characteristics of the austenite-pearlite reaction. The rate of formation of pearlite is increased by the presence of inhomogeneities2,3 and because of this (when the inhomogeneity is sufficiently pronounced) the hardenability of the steel is reduced.4,5 In addition to this kinetic effect, inhomogeneities will cause the direct formation of spheroidite from austenite at temperatures just below the Ael.6-11 The present report attempts quantitatively to evaluate the effect of inhomogeneity upon the rate of the austenite-pearlite reaction, presents a method of determining the austenitizing cycle necessary to obtain "practical homogenization," and considers the effect of inhomogeneity on hardenability. Effect of Inhomogeneities on Reactions Near Ae1 Few quantitative data are available representing the effect of undissolved carbide or of carbon concentration gradients upon the rate of the austenite-pearlite reaction. In procuring such data it is necessary to separate the effect of undissolved carbide from that of grain size, and this is not an easy task. The solution of carbide is always accompanied by an increase in the grain size, both effects contributing to the retardation of the reaction rate. It has been possible to make this separation and to obtain data that are independent of the grain size by the use of steels that differ only with respect to their tendency toward grain-coarsening. Steels C and D in Table I are such steels. These steels have been studied previously ;l,2,12 they differ only with respect to deoxidation practice; C was deoxidized with silicon while D, teemed from a portion of the same heat, was deoxidized with additional auantities of aluminum in the mold. During the SME Board of Directors’ midyear meeting in Monterey, CA Aug. 25, I discussed trends in the construction aggregates industry. Many construction-material suppliers may not have yet fully internalized the changes that are taking place. But the changes are significant. And they have shifted the focus in the aggregates industry from “assets” to “people and innovation.” Construction-material suppliers serve many customers. A typical quarrying operation at Graniterock would have more than 1,000 customers, mostly civil engineering contractors. Along with the push toward people and innovation, there is increased emphasis on vertical integration from aggregates to ready-mix concrete and hot mix asphalt, to final construction. If a company is not vertically integrated, it will at least have strong partnerships with other firms, to deliver a high-quality finished project on time.

Natural materials can be used successfully in the construction of heap leach pads. The use of these materials usually result in the least expensive approach for such facilities. Sufficient geotechnical experience has been gained in the design and construction of clay heap leach pads so that they can be used with confidence. A number of operators presently use clay pads in their heap leach facilities; these include Alligator Ridge, Ely, Nevada (gold), and Union Carbide, Gas Hills, Wyoming (uranium). This paper describes the construction and field investigation of a clay pad for the heap leaching of agglomerated precious tailings. The project is located in the Mojave Desert, Southern California. The design had to satisfy operational requirements as well as regulatory requirements. The California Water Quality Control Board (WQCB) was one of the agencies which had to issue a permit for the project. Their biggest concern was the discharge or escape of cyanide into the environment. Rather stringent requirements were therefore placed on the pad design criteria, especially in terms of permeability.

In 1976, a decision was made to install a conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 miles) from the new Eisenhower Partnership Mine to Twin Buttes. The system, supplied and installed by Cable Belt Limited, of England, represents a radical departure from conventional conveyor systems. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes while the belt acts only as the carrying medium. Features of the system are a single 2240 kw (3000 hp) drive and a 60° angle bend. Construction was completed in two years. Full production was attained after several months' operation.

The construction of diaphragm walls and most large-diameter bored piles (piers) is often carried out under drilling support fluids to temporarily stabilise the excavation prior to concrete placement. In most cases such fluids are either mineral-based slurries (bentonite) or polymer support fluids. The working mechanisms of these two fluid types are fundamentally different. Designers need to consider possible fluid-related impacts on the permanent design performance of the project-specific deep foundations as well as for the temporary excavation stage during construction. Robust design methods for bentonite slurry-supported excavations have been developed in the last few decades and the working principles and associated risks of such mineral-based slurries are understood reasonably well. However, such meth-ods have not been developed in detail for polymer-based drilling fluids. This document provides a brief overview of the main characteristics of bentonite- and polymer-based drilling fluids as a guide for construction practitioners and design engineers alike. The paper also high-lights some common construction risks related to casing installation and the selection of suitable fluid systems for different ground conditions. Typical defects caused by the incorrect application of drilling support fluids, and their pro-active mitigation, are discussed, too. In addition, the basic concepts of sta-bility calculations for bentonite fluid-supported deep excavations are briefly introduced and their ap-plicability for other fluid types such as polymer-based support fluids or water are reviewed.

Ground Modification construction is rapidly evolving in the United States. An assessment of the construction status of Ground Modification methods with their dates of introduction and general acceptance in the United States is summarized. Seven of these techniques are discussed in depth with short case histories; namely, Dynamic Deep Compaction, vibro-compaction, vibro-Replacement, chemical grouting, compaction grouting, slurry grouting and jet grouting. Additional case histories are presented to illustrate the trend of combining Ground Modification techniques to solve specific site problems.
