Currently, social impact assessment (SIA) is used to determine social impacts across the life-of-mine (LOM) to closure. This paper draws on recently completed SIA reports from the Martha gold mine in Waihi and qualitative interviews in the community that explored post-closure options, to review the challenges mining companies face when engaging with iwi4 through the SIA process and what that may mean for closure planning. The Maori of New Zealand consistently lobby to have a distinct voice in resource management issues. This is in line with the evolution of indigenous participation in SIA globally and with New Zealand policies, not least of which, the Treaty of Waitangi (the founding document of New Zealand) makes provision for Maori self-determination with regard to natural resources. Land use for mining has been a source of conflict for Maori and mining can have profound cultural and social impacts on the Maori community, yet despite Treaty intentions their representation in SIA has been comparatively limited. With this in mind, the Waitangi Tribunal has released the Ko Aotearoa Tenei (Wai 262) report, which recommends far reaching reforms to laws and policies affecting Maori culture and identity including natural resource management. This landmark report seeks to move the Maori-Government relationship beyond grievance to partnership. Given suggested policy changes in Wai 262 and the risks of poorly conceived closure planning, it is timely to review where Maori currently fit into the SIA process. The findings of this research suggest that improvements to the outcomes of this process will require companies to act beyond compliance. In the spectrum of mining-related disciplines, geometallurgy sits between resource geology and metallurgical engineering. Unlike its neighbours, it is a relatively young discipline and its concepts, procedures and techniques are still evolving. Relevant geometallurgical issues differ from one deposit to the next so there is no single template that can be used in all situations, meaning that geometallurgy programs are nearly always customised and tailored to the deposit and the situation.Over time, a number of key mistakes are seen to emerge regularly. The eventual impact of these mistakes can vary from suboptimal performance of mine and plant to complete failure of the operation. For instance, poor characterisation of ore lithologies and their spatial distribution can have negative impacts on processing plant throughput. However, when combined with failure to identify critical blending constraints it can result in a totally inoperable plant.A number of common mistakes committed during geometallurgical programs are discussed and some preferred alternative approaches are suggested

The critical importance of tap-hole design and management to furnace performance and longevity is explored through examining some of the specific matte, metal and slag tapping requirements of non-ferrous copper blister and matte converting and smelting, ferroalloys smelting and ironmaking systems. Process conditions and productivity requirements and their influence on tapping are reviewed for these different pyrometallurgical systems. Some critical aspects of the evolution of tap-hole design to meet the diverging process and tapping duties are examined. Differences and similarities in tapping practices and tap-hole management are reviewed. Finally core aspects of tap-hole equipment and maintenance are identified that are considered important to securing improved tap-hole performance and life, so pivotal to superior furnace smelting performance.

Any type of deep excavation whether for Bored Piling, Diaphragm Walls or Contiguous Bored Piling Walls depends on forming a stable borehole with a defined cross-section to receive safely the permanent materials. In modern construction the excavation depth can reach well the range of 100 m and above. The diameters of the Piles reach often sizes of 2.5 m and bigger. Top casings in Bored Piles (Diaphragm Wall none) are rather short and stability below the casing, need to be secured by stabilization slurry. The boreholes need to be formed through a variety of different materials and stand open for an extended period. Without a safe stable borehole, it is impossible to produce quality products and work cost-efficient. The understanding and proper usage of a suitable slurry is a key element essential for the delivery of Foundation Elements with high quality and within a reasonable budget. The setting of mechanical and rheological parameters in specifications is necessary and helpful, but probably insufficient to embrace and control such a key element in the practical implementation of foundation construction. The proper selection, design, implementation and supervision of slurries on site requires both from Contractors and Engineers to understand how different slurries do function. Only with this knowledge the right decisions in slurry operations can be made. This talk is directed to give some help to both, Contractor’s and Engineer’s, in understanding how different type of slurries do work. (Which ones should be preferred in what kind of soils.) The better knowledge will help the Contractor to control cost and enhance production. The Engineer will be able to assist in arriving at the appropriate technical choices and include in the specifications.

Saving energy and reducing pollution by minimizing emissions are today great challenges in the coking industry worldwide. In order to achieve satisfying results, equipment as well as technology should be continuously improved and updated. The most modern design tools should be adopted to maximize the coke production rate also ensuring the best coke quality. In this scenario, Paul Wurth is realizing the new coke making plant of CSPecem, Ceara - Brazil. These batteries are based on Paul Wurth “jumbo oven concept”. This solution incorporates all most modern features and design upgrading, in the aim of an easy and long-lasting operation putting a particular attention to environmental performances: the reduced number of ovens and the low number of pushing per day have the main effect of reducing pollution sources. Finally the paper will highlight Paul Wurth SOPRECO® System, which is foreseen to be installed in CSPecem batteries. SOPRECO®, which is capable of controlling the pressure for each individual oven in a coke oven battery, is thus able to reduce volatile emissions through doors, roofs and stand pipes up to 90%. The coke oven gas (COG) produced during the carbonization process is cleaned in a coke oven gas treatment plant to the level stipulated by applying the Best Available Technology (BAT).

"The installation of foundation elements (large-diameter Bored Piles or Diaphragm Walls) for the execution of underground works to be performed through the ""Top Down"" Technique (Stations, Car Parks, Subways, Artificial Tunnels) often requires the insertion, with pinpoint accuracy, of steel or prefabricated elements within the foundation system, to provide temporary and/or permanent support to the whole structure.The future high-speed railway station of Florence Belfiore (Italy) is a perfect example; the new station will be built in the Northwest area of Florence, about two kilometers far from the existing station of Santa Maria Novella. The project envisages installation of about 500 bored piles (1200-1500-2100 mm diameter), with lengths ranging between 50 and 70 m. In the upper inner part of 250 piles, a steel pipe (weight: 15-20 tons, length: 22-25 mt.) has to be inserted with pinpoint accuracy.The “TREVI-CALATORE” system allows to install the plunge columns and adjust their position and verticality.INTRODUCTIONThe execution of underground works via the ""Top Down"" technique, train or tube underground stations, parking shafts, tunnels, often implies the need to carefully insert steel or prefabricated structures, serving as provisional/definitive pillars, into the foundation elements.The future high-speed railway station of Florence Belfiore is a perfect example; the new station will be built in the Northwest area of Florence, located about two kilometers far from the existing station of Santa Maria Novella.The new Belfiore Station is part of the new European high-speed railway network. The works related to Florence urban penetration include (figure 1):•,a 6.5 km. twin tunnel excavated via TBM/EPB, that will run beneath Florence in a north-east direction,•,passing under more than 150 buildings, many of which can be considered historic buildings, with a soil•,coverage ranging from 6 m to 20 m;•,a North portal in Rifredi area, Firenze Castello Station;•,a South portal near Campo di Marte Station (which is also the launch shaft of the TBM)•,the new Underground Station in Belfiore area."
