The research examines the performance of uncoated and coated tungsten carbide-cobalt rock cutting bits. It aims to optimize process variables (cutting speed, depth, coating material) considering multiple output responses (cutting forces, specific energy, wear rate, material removed, angle of reaction forces). The study uses a hybrid optimization technique combining Taguchi design, grey relational analysis, and fuzzy logic. The optimal parameter combination was found to be cutting speed: 200 mm/s, cutting depth: 6 mm, and titanium aluminum silicon nitride coating.

"Results from a study directed towards identifying and measuring the mutagenicity of diesel exhaust particulate matter involved in mining exposures, especially those which may synergistically affect genotoxic hazard, are presented in this paper. Particulate matter emissions from a diesel engine, representative of the ones found in underground mines, were sampled and assayed to determine the genotoxic potential as a function of engine operating conditions. Diesel exhaust was diluted in a multi-tube mini-dilution tunnel and the particulate matter was collected on 70 mm fluorocarbon coated glass fiber filters as well as on 8"" x 10"" hi-volume filters. A six mode steady state duty cycle was used to relate engine operating conditions to the mutagenicity potential.Protocols developed for using a primary component of pulmonary surfactant as a medium for collecting and applying respirable particulate material to cells for mutagenicity testing offer a true representation of in-vivo delivery of such respired aerosols to pulmonary cells and the genetic material within . The surfactant dispersion technique is discussed in this paper. Methods have been developed to sample and assay the diesel soot and diesel soot/mineral dust complexes which would not compromise the surface and physical properties of the particulate material."

Several novel types of chemically modified chitosan were prepared by immobilizing functional groups of EDTA and DTPA onto polymer matrices of chitosan in order to investigate their potential for mutual adsorptive separation among rare earths. Following the batch wise adsorption tests to elucidate their basic adsorption characteristics for rare earths, mutual separation was carried out using a column packed with the chemically modified chitosan. The separation between Sm(III) and Y(III) was tested using a column packed with EDTA-type chitosan while mutual separation among 4 light rare earths, La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III) and Nd(III) was tested using a column packed with DTPA-type chitosan. In both cases, satisfactory mutual separation was achieved by the chromatographic operation using these chemically modified chitosan.

Tin production and export from the Far East are still a long way off from the prewar figures. The Malayan Peninsula, which had a rather good start directly after the war largely because of stock piles found in Singapore and elsewhere, has since been hampered in the rehabilitation of its tin mines and dredging operations by material shortages and, more recently and more severely, by revolts and attacks of communist elements and gangster bands. These hindrances make working in the mines dangerous and form a daily threat against the valuable and highly vulnerable dredges. Contrary to the conditions in Malaya are those on the tin islands of Billiton, Banka, and Singkep-all in the Netherlands East Indies-where the Dutch have re-established peaceful relations with the population. Dutch efforts since the fall of 1945 have been rewarded by continuously increasing production, extension of production facilities, and return of moderate prosperity, complete safety, and all-out co-operation among the population ? native and Chinese ? to the benefit of all concerned.

"Recent DOE workshops highlight the need for advanced soft magnetic materials leveraged in novel designs of power electronic components and systems for power conditioning and grid integration. Dramatic weight and size reductions are possible in these applications through operating at increased frequencies. This manuscript discusses processing and composition design approaches for optimizing FeCo-based nanocomposites for higher frequency operation at 100 kHz and above. The proposed strategy involves starting with prior compositions known to exhibit high inductions, optimal field crystallization induced anisotropy, and excellent mechanical and high temperature magnetic properties. Proposed alloy modifications for the applications of interest would include increased amorphous phase resistance, optimum induced anisotropy, and minimized or carefully engineered magnetostriction. Relevant process developments would target reduction of ribbon thickness by optimizing the casting process or post-processing treatments such as chemical thinning or rolling. Three archetypes FeCo-based nanocomposites are described including near equiatomic FeCo-based, Fe-rich and Co-rich alloys.MotivationSilicon steels are widely applied for 60Hz utility-scale transformers [1]. For applications at high frequencies, however, Si-steels exhibit unacceptable losses and ferrites are typically used due to their high electrical resistivity and good soft magnetic properties [2]. However, the low inductions offerrites have limited their applications in power electronics. Developments in rapid solidification have led to amorphous metal alloys and controlled nanocrystallization processing has resulted in state-of-the-art amorphous/nanocrystalline nanocomposite soft magnets [3-5]. Commercial utility-scale transformers made with Fe-based amorphous materials have been demonstrated to result in significant energy savings with an associated reduction in greenhouse gas emissions [6]. DOE workshops held in 2010 emphasized a need for advanced soft magnetic materials for the next generation of power electronics. For advanced power conditioning and grid integration applications, frequencies of 20 kHz up to -1 MHz are of interest depending on the power level [7]. Here, we review previous work and discuss the approaches to optimize FeCo-based nanocomposite materials for high frequency applications."

"Understanding the effects of extensive radiation damage in structural metals provides necessary insight for predicting the performance of those metals considered for application in the extreme radiation environment. Predicting mechanical performance after long term radiation exposure is of great importance to extending the life of current nuclear reactors and for developing future materials for the next generation of reactors. A combination of finite element modeling, nanoindentation, and TEM characterization were used to rapidly determine the microstructure and mechanical properties influences of ion irradiation on a standard 3 l 6L stainless steel sample. The results of this study found that ion irradiation and small scale mechanical property testing can be used to characterize extensive levels of radiation damage structure, only when significant consideration is given to ion irradiation depth, surface roughness and polishing condition, the irradiation temperature, and many other experimental parameters.IntroductionFor either the success of next generation nuclear reactors or the extension of current nuclear reactors significantly beyond their designed lifetimes, research is needed into the degradation of the microstructure and mechanical properties governing the performance of the reactor alloys exposed to extreme environments. Although the exact dose and temperature of these nuclear reactor plans may vary, the cladding and other structural components will be exposed to greater dose and at elevated temperatures. To acco=odate these severe exposures, established cladding materials are being testing to longer exposure and new alloy compositions are being considered. [1-3] For neutron test facilities to reach 100 dpa level, exposure times often span several years, significantly limiting the down-select process of potential new materials for extreme radiation environments. Ion irradiation has been used as a technique to provide a look at the effect of irradiation damage on materials in a significantly shorter time frame. Previous work using proton irradiation provides a deep, broad, and relatively uniform defect profile compared to heavy ion irradiation; however, using this type of radiation still requires weeks to months to reach the 100 dpa level. [4] In this research, we investigated the feasibility of using heavy ion (nickel) irradiation and small scale mechanical testing to provide in a few days a first order screening technique for potential alloys that are being considered for advanced testing."

ABSTRACT Hydrophobic polystyrene nanoparticles were evaluated as potential flotation collectors for pentlandite. The flotation of hydrophilic glass beads demonstrated the nanoparticles’ ability to induce flotation. Deposition of nanoparticles on glass surfaces increased the contact angle and enhanced adhesion of the beads to air bubbles. High flotation recoveries were achieved when 5–10% of the bead surfaces were covered with nanoparticles. Surface functionalization—the addition of vinylimidazole to polystyrene nanoparticle surfaces—caused the nanoparticles to selectively deposit onto pentlandite surfaces in the presence of Mg-Si slimes. Gold-based nanoparticles in the size range of a few nm have attracted increasing interests in catalysis, sensors and biomedical applications. The study of the unique catalytic properties of nanosized gold was inspired by the pioneering work of Haruta on the nanogold-catalyzed CO oxidation (1-4). There have been a number of excellent reports discussing both fundamental and application aspects of gold nanoparticles in catalysis (3-8). Our work reported herein is aimed at investigating the preparation and application of gold and its alloy nanoparticles for potential applications in fuel cell catalysis. Fuel cells operating by electrochemical oxidation of hydrogen or methanol fuels at the anode and reduction of oxygen at the cathode are attractive power sources due to their high conversion efficiencies, low pollution, lightweight and high power density. While methanol offers the advantage of easy storage and transportation in comparison with hydrogen fuel cell, its energy density (~2000 Wh/kg) and operating cell voltage (0.4 V) are much lower than the theoretical energy density (~6000 Wh/kg) and the thermodynamic potential (~1.2 V). The poor activity of the anode catalysts and inefficient activity or issue related to "methanol cross-over" at the cathode electrode are associated with the loss of about one-third of the available energy at the cathode and the other one-third at the anode. Extensive studies have been focused on Pt-group metals (Pt+Pd+Rh+Ru+Ir (PGM)) for both anode and cathode catalysts. A major problem is the poisoning of Pt by COlike intermediate species (9,10). Recently, oxide-supported gold nanoparticles in the <10 nm size range have emerged as one of the best catalysts for CO oxidation (1-3,11), and for water gas shift reaction in reforming stage using 5 nm Au on Fe2O3 (6). Gold and its alloy with other metals in the nanosize range present new alternatives (2,12). Whether the unique properties of gold nanoparticles can be exploited for addressing these problems is a focus area of our work. The ability to harness the large surface area-to-volume ratios and the unique surface sites of nanoparticles in <10 nm size range, especially in heterogeneous catalysis, constitutes a major driving force in fundamental research and practical applications of nanoparticle catalysts. It is this size range over which the metal particles undergo a transition from atomic to metallic properties. The understanding of factors controlling the morphological and surface reconstitution associated with such a size range is of fundamental importance to the ultimate exploration of nanostructured catalysts. We have been investigating the interfacial structures and properties of core-shell types of nanoparticles consisting of gold or alloy nanocrystal cores and organic monolayer shells that were prepared by twophase synthesis (13) and processing (14) protocols. Important attributes of such nanoparticles include controllable size monodispersity, processibility, and stability towards size- and composition-tunable catalysis (15-21). Some of these attributes were studied for understanding their electrocatalytic properties in the oxidation of methanol and reduction of oxygen, which are of fundamental interest to fuel cell technology.

"The concept of achieving a useful high-energy-product magnet through appropriate nanostructuring of known hard and soft phases has been tantalizing researchers since the idea was first proposed. The fabrication of exchange-coupled nanocomposite magnets faces several challenges including aligning the easy anisotropy axes of the hard-phase grains. Here we investigate experimentally two-phase nanostructures of hard Lio-ordered FePt and soft iron-rich/cc Fe(Pt). The Fe-Pt thin films were produced by epitaxial cosputtering onto MgO (001) single-crystal substrates which lead to strong (001) texturing. The measured hysteresis loops indicate nearly ideal exchange coupling. Excellent magnetic properties are obtained, with largest values of coercivity (51 kOe), saturation magnetization (1287 emu/ cm3, J, = 16.2 kG), and nominal maximum energy product (58 MGOe).1. IntroductionA key figure of merit for permanent magnets is the maximum energy product (BH)rrw.x. The achievable maximum energy product is determined by a magnet's saturation magnetization M, and its magnetic anisotropy. For example, it is well known that (BH)rrw.x :S 4n2M,2• In the past, record energy products have been the result of discovering new compounds with high values of magnetization and anisotropy. However, finding new compounds with better magnetic properties than the current record-holding magnet Nd2Fe14B has proven to be difficult. A different approach is to exploit the exchange coupling mechanism between known hard and soft magnetic phases to enhance the maximum energy product [1-5]. In such a composite system, high coercivity is achieved due to the anisotropy of the hard phase as well as a nanostructure which prohibits large-scale domain wall reversal mechanisms. Magnetization is enhanced by the soft phase and loop squareness results from texturing of the hard phase easy-axis as well as complete exchange coupling between the coexisting hard and soft grains."

In May 1991, a New Mitsubishi Continuous Copper Smelter Line started operation at Naoshima. Recently, it has been continuing steady operation and one and a half year campaign life has been achieved. In 1996, new records of on line time, the amount of copper concentrate treated and copper anode production were achieved. 1t proves the superiority of the process with respect to pollution control, energy efficiency, flexibility and easiness of the operation and over all economy including off gas handling cost. Furthermore, .plans are underway to prolong the campaign life for two years and to improve the process efficiency. This paper describes recent operation, improvements, and a future capability study.

"The city of Naples has one of the most ancient traditions of tunneling in the world, since Roman age until today. This was due to the softness of volcanic rock covering most of the city surface, this determined in centuries the excavation of many connected cavities, today still accessible. The building of metro lines promoted industrial tunneling construction: TBM, Raise Boring Machine, Vertical Shaft Machine and freezing technologies played a decisive role facing water pressure near the sea. MNspa is an advanced constructor with two lines built in parallel, mainly underwater. The planning of this infrastructure has been upgraded with the projects of international architects from all Europe, with installation of art masterpieces in station spaces while archeological excavations revealed artifacts since Paleolithic. The city expects to give a new image of the urban landscapes within the completion of all stations and consequent rehabilitation of interiors and external city spaces. A case study of Municipio square station, is chosen to explain the relevance of archaeological research in improving and developing the projects of Line 1 stations. In these pages, it will be explained how the engineering process required to deal with Art, Architecture and Archaeology to finally realize an extended urban renovation of Naples. 1 CITYSCAPE 1.1 Introducing the geological history of Naples In the evolution of the city, capital of the Magna Graecia and of consequent kingdoms, a new layer of buildings was added over the foundations of demolished walls of the precedent domination period: from the top of the Bourbons layer (the most common scenery of the city since 1734) to the Aragonese layer found just underneath it; then below stands the Angiovin city, which in turn is built above the Swabian traces; underneath the ancient traces of the Byzantine age are found just above the extended Latin age layer. The most ancient settlement, known as Parthenope, dates back to 1500 b.C. It sits below the Greeks remains of the city of Palepolis, which had been rebuilt under the name of Neapolis by Romans."

MINING literature contains very few descriptions of operations producing as little as 25 to 30 tons of ore per day. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the gradual development of a mining method for such a small-scale operation at the No. 2 mine of Central Patricia Gold Mines, Limited, and in doing so to review several systems of stoping applicable to narrow ve1ns. MAIN ECONOMIC FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED (1) Overhead.-The outstanding feature of most mines operating on a single narrow vein is chat of small daily tonnage. The reason for this low output can be readily understood. The strictly limited ore-reserves present a condition unfavourable for a policy of large initial expenditures, with the result that the capacity of the plant provided must be governed by the? amount of ore in sight at the time when mill construction is planned. This is immediately reflected in the cost per ton, there being relatively few tons over which to distributed the more or less static charges, such as hoisting, heating, supervision, administration, pre-production expenses, and other write-offs. (2) Development.-In mining this type of orebody, the main factor contributing to high costs is unquestionably the small tonnage of ore made available by a given amount of development. Thus, for example, from the data tabulated below it can be seen chat, assuming a 12-in. vein and a drifting cost of $9.00 per foot, the development charge for this item alone would be 71 cents per ton. Add to this the charges for raising, cross-cutting, shaft-sinking, and pumping, besides charges arising from development in waste, and the figure will be very considerably higher than 71 cents.

The gold mine sector is presently facing low gold prices as well as technological challenges. Its competitiveness and survival will depend on new mining methods and equipment to improve ore extraction. In 1999, Natural Resources Canada has invested new funds over a period of three years at CANMET?s Experimental Mine to establish the Narrow-Vein Mining Project. A team of engineers and researchers specialised in mining, mechanics and electronics engineering are working to meet the critical need of ore-extraction technology. CANMET?s program in mechanisation and automation for narrow vein mining had, prior to 1999, realised several important achievements, many in co-operation with a consortium of mining companies (Soredem). The investment of new funds in this area will contribute to develop technologies to improve the productivity, as well as health and safety conditions of the narrow vein mining industry. Several important impacts of this project will be monitored. Specifically, a database of methods and equipment used in narrow vein mining is being developed. A key thrust is to identify operators? needs with respect to the development and automation of mining methods and equipment. Based on those needs, research and development projects will be created. The main problems identified following meetings with mine operators are described with a few elements of solution and the Web site created for the broadcast of the results is presented.

In 1950, about a third of the world?s population lived in cities. That figure has steadily risen throughout the following decades. Now it is believed that about 60 percent of the estimated 8.1 billion people in 2030 will be living in urban areas. The strain on infrastructure in cities in the developed world is already showing. And the rapid growth in developing nations today is adding to the shortage of materials, equipment and labor needed to keep up with this growth. So, while materials and labor may be in short supply, there is no shortage of work for the underground tunneling and space industry. In June, 718 of those professionals from around the world were in San Francisco, CA for the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, put on by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME. The attendees spent the three days of technical sessions listening to international authors discuss the state of the industry, new technologies that have become available and updates on major tunneling projects throughout the world. The accompanying exhibit attracted 79 vendors, who displayed the latest in tunneling and underground space equipment and services. In addition to the technical sessions and the exhibit, the NAT featured three short courses ? ?DRB Process Update Workshop,? ?Soft Ground Tunneling Technologies? and ?Underground Blasting Technology and Risk Management.? And the post-meeting field trip to the Devils Slide tunneling project near San Francisco was sold out.

Economic activity in the United States picked up in the third quarter, according to the latest estimate released by the Department of Commerce. Real gross national product (GNP)--the Nation&apos;s output of goods and services--grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.3%, or $17.6 billion, compared with a rate of 1.9% for the second quarter of 1985 and 1.6% for the third quarter of 1984 (table 1). The 4.3% rate is one percentage point above the preliminary estimate reported in the August/September issue of Minerals and Materials. Most of the upward revision was due to the change in business inventories and Government purchases, while the figure for net exports was revised downward substantially. The 4.3% growth bettered by 1.5% the average rate of growth in GNP from 1974 through 1984 and was 1.1 % above that of the period from 1975 through 1984 and 0.7% above that of 1980 through 1984. Of importance to the minerals industry was the $14.4-billion growth in personal consumption expenditures, $10.2 billion of which was for durable goods (especially domestically produced automobiles) and the growing residential investment. The net export deficit continued to grow, however, and investment in nonresidential structures, producers&apos; durable equipment, and business inventories declined. Prices, as measured by the GNP fixed-weighted price index, increased at an annual rate of 3.1% in the third quarter, compared with 3.9% in the second quarter. The slower rate of inflation resulted mainly from a decline in energy prices, following second-quarter increases. Fourth-Quarter Prognosis Many of the economic data available for October and November indicate that the economy is growing modestly and will continue to grow over the next 3 to 6 months. The composite index of leading indicators, designed to predict economic activity within 3 to 6 months, rose 0.3% in October, the sixth consecutive monthly advance, according to the Department of Commerce. Six of the 11 available leading indicators were positive: Stock market prices rose, as did sensitive material prices, credit outstanding, and manufacturers&apos; new orders for consumer goods and materials; initial claims for unemployment insurance decreased, and firms were getting slower delivery of goods. Four of the indicators were negative: Business formations, homebuilding permits, contracts and orders for plant and equipment, and money supply all declined. The average hours worked per week, already at a high level, remained unchanged.

PART 1 APPLICATION AND TERMINOLOGY 1.1 Supplements Other Requirements – The Instrument supplements other continuous disclosure requirements of securities legislation that apply to reporting issuers in all business sectors. 1.2 Evolving Industry Standards and Modifications to the Instrument- Mining industry practice and professional standards are evolving in Canada and internationally. The Securities Regulatory Authorities will monitor developments in these fields and will solicit and consider recommendations from their staff and external advisers as to whether modifications to the Instrument are appropriate. 1.3 Application of the Instrument -The definition of “disclosure” under the Instrument includes oral and written disclosure. The Instrument establishes standards for disclosure of scientific and technical information regarding mineral projects and requires that the disclosure be based on a technical report or other information prepared byor under the supervision of a qualified person. The Instrument does not apply to disclosure concerning petroleum, natural gas, bituminous sands or shales, groundwater, coal bed methane or other substances that do not fall within the meaning of the term “mineral project” in section 1.1 of the Instrument. 1.4 Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Definitions - The Instrument incorporates by reference the definitions and categories of mineral resources and mineral reserves as set out in the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (the “CIM”) Definition Standards on Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the “CIM Definition Standards”) adopted by the CIM Council on November 14, 2004, as amended. 1.5 Best Practices Guidelines for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves - A qualified person classifying a mineral deposit as a mineral resource or mineral reserve should follow the CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Best Practice Guidelines adopted by CIM on November 23, 2003, as amended.
