Lightweight concrete aggregates are materials weighing less than the usual aggregates of sand, gravel, and crushed rock. Concretes made with sand and gravel or crushed rock weigh 145 to 150 lb per cu ft, compared with 50 to 90 lb per cu ft for concretes made with lightweight aggregate. The ultra-lightweight concretes weigh much less than 50 lb per cu ft. Lightweight aggregates may be natural or manufactured materials, or byproducts from other commercial operations. Natural materials include pumice and pumicite, tuffs, breccia, scoria, diatomite, and vegetable products, such as peat, straw, and sawdust. Manufactured materials include expanded perlite, vermiculite, slag, clay, shale, and slate. Byproducts include cinders, aircooled slags, and coke breeze. Concretes made with lightweight aggregate were used first in construction of commercial buildings, later in homes. Present usage is general in multistory and other building construction, such as bridge decks, barges, jet-plane runways, piers and other structures. The industry has grown remarkably in the last decade. General Considerations The particular use to which the concrete may be put determines the importance of the various properties of the aggregates employed. Any given type of aggregate, however, should be reasonably uniform in composition and properties. It should be suitably graded and maintain proper weights, insulation values, and adequate strength to prevent breakdowns in mixing. It should bond properly with the cement, be inert to chemical reactions with cement and steel, and resist weathering, moisture, insects, and fungi. Some properties of any given type of lightweight aggregate from different suppliers may vary considerably because of differences in the source of raw material and the method of treatment. This statement applies particularly to expanded clays, shales and slates. All lightweight concretes have higher absorption of moisture and lower thermal conductivity, lower compressive strength, as well as lower unit weight as compared with standard concretes made with sand, gravel or crushed rock. Excepting cinders, the cost of lightweight aggregates is usually higher. Grading and unit weight requirements are given in ASTM standards: C 330-53T, Lightweight Aggregates for Structural Concrete; C 331-53T, Lightweight Aggregates for Concrete Masonry Units; C 332-54T, Lightweight Aggregates for Insulating Concrete. The production of masonry units shows the growth of the use and types of lightweight aggregates. In 1947 the total number of lightweight block was 460,000,000 units in 8 by 8 by 16-in. equivalents. By 1954 this had increased to 950,000,000 units. Of the 1954 production, 27 pct was of manufactured types, 43 pct of cinders, and 30 pct of remaining types. Raw Materials Used as Lightweight Aggregates It was stated above that a variety of products both natural and manufactured are used as lightweight aggregates. It is easy to understand that a bulky material of low unit value cannot be transported far and still remain a low cost product. Manufacturers of brick and tile are showing growing interest in the possibility of manufacture of a clay bonded block. The block would have the shape of concrete block, but would be made without the use of Portland cement, Instead, the block would be made' from mixtures' of an aggregate and the present raw materials of the brick industry. The finished units would weigh 20 to 30 pounds and meet the specifications for Grade A concrete block. The present status of the clay block development shows one manufacturer actually in production of these units$, two additional manufacturers are attempting production and many manufacturers are actively engaged in development work. At least four major research laboratories are engaged in the development program. There are several different processes available for clay block production. These processes differ primarily in the type of aggregate used or in the type of forming operation selected. I would like summarize these possible methods.

This includes new and innovative technical solutions as well as the sensitive management of interests. The lignite industry has learned that openness and the constant effort to exchange viewpoints within their environment are all essential elements. The credibility that has been gained over the decades is the foundation on which the lignite industry can build its future. Beyond that a framework of political guidelines is necessary. Public interest in a secure and inex-pensive energy supply that also includes lignite is indispensable. In this context, the lignite industry will then be able to answer the questions which are directed at them and concern the economy, ecology, and social tolerability also by indicators."

According to the 1966 Bureau of Mines Mineral Year Book only three states reported production of lignite in that year. These state: were North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota; although it is known that there is production of lignite in Texas, California and, perhaps, Arkansas. In the year 1966 North Dakota produced 3,543,000 tons of lignite, Montana produced 328,000 tons of lignite, and South Dakota produced 10,000 tons of lignite. In view of the fact that North Dakota produces approximately 95 per cent of all the lignite reported in the United States, in discussing lignite mining, my remarks will be confined to lignite mining as conducted in North Dakota and will be confined to the production of lignite by stripping methods, as this is the predominate method used today. The first lignite mining in Worth Dakota, undoubtedly, was done by people settling in the western part of the state where wood was scarce and where lignite is exposed in the banks of creeks and ravines. The first production records were kept in 1884 and indicate that 35,000 tons of lignite were mined that year. The growth of the lignite industry has been very slow during the intervening period, but in 1966 production started to increase, and it is now indicated that production in the next few years may approach 6,000,000 tons per year. Ninety-seven per cent of the lignite produced in the lignite area of the Midwest is utilized in the generation of electric power, and it is anticipated that this use will predominate during the next two decades.

THE use of lime in flotation has become so general in recent years that its functions are familiar to plant operators. The conditions and phenomena described in this paper are of interest because they are directly associated with the use of lime as a reagent and the resulting formation of lime scale worth nearly $1 per pound for its gold content. It is not known to what extent lime scale is common in flotation plants where lime is used, but as several occurrences have been re- ported, its existence is not limited to one particular plant. In November, 1927, the author's attention was drawn to a lime scale that formed on the sides of Callow flotation cells in the Walker Mining Co. mill at Spring Gar- den, Cal. The scale was described as an accumulation of hard material that built up on the sides of both the rougher and cleaner cells and in some instances attained a thickness of 2 in. The lime scale builds up in the cleaner cell at the rate of about 1/10 in. per month, or slightly more than ?12 in. during six months' operation. The rate of growth in the rougher cells is slower, and about 3/s in. of scale forms in six months. Analyses' of typical lime scale samples are as follows:

To Japan, which is scarce in natural resources, limestone is the only mineral resource comparatively rich in ore reserves and having broadly recognized outstanding quality. Distribution of the limestone deposits extends from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu and Okinawa in the south, and the deposits are located in a manner of framework formation of the Islands of Japan. Studies of the geological ages of these ore deposits reveals that almost all of the main ore deposits west of Kanto Area belong to the Carboniferous Period - Permian Period of the Paleozoic Era. Also in the east of Kanto Area, deposits belonging to the Paleozoic Era constitute the main part, although recently there are increasing examples of reclassifying the geological age of the deposits heretofore considered as Paleozoic Era to the Triassic Period of the Mesozoic Era by the recent discoveries of the fossils of conodont, etc. Large ore deposits and main ore deposit groups are given in the Figure 1, which shows that the deposits are roughly found well distributed throughout the country.

From time to time since the initial installation of an experimental flotation section in 1940 (reference A), Permanente Cement Company has made efforts to beneficiate the low-grade limestone fraction which occurs in its deposit at Permanente, California, The encouraging results outlined in this paper are the result of Permanente's latest effort. This paper discusses the factors governing the selection of the flowsheet with particular reference to marketability of the sand tailing by-product. The process flow is outlined in detail, and operating statistics of the plant are presented. Finally, the problems encountered in the operation of Permanente's beneficiation plant are discussed as well as solutions sought and found.

Limestone can be used effectively in treating acid mine water. Aside from a lower cost than for other treatment agents, limestone has the advantages of easy storage and effectiveness even when impure and in slack sizes. Limestone incorporated into waste piles in layers or as riprap can inhibit acid formation; limestone rubble packed in a mine entry offers promise in formation of a low-cost autogenous resilient seal.

"Limestone-bearing strata are exposed in seven areas of Alberta, each situated adjacent to rail and road facilities. Six of these centers are located along the eastern edge of the Foothills and Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains in western Alberta. The other is in northeastern Alberta, along the eastern margin of the Alberta Basin. High-grade limestones are present in Middle Cambrian, Upper Devonian and Mississippian strata. Middle Cambrian (Eldon Formation) limestones have been exploited only in the Exshaw area west of Calgary, where they formerly were used for lime production. Limestone beds of the Upper Devonian Palliser Formation are exploited at Exshaw and at Cadomin in west-central Alberta for the manufacture of cement. Reserves of high-grade limestone also are available in the Palliser Formation near Crowsnest Lake in southwestern Alberta and near BrUle, west of Edmonton. Upper Devonian limestones of the Waterways Formation are widespread in the Fort McMurray area of northeastern Alberta, but available data indicate they are of inferior quality to the limestone deposits of the Rocky Mountains regions. The Mississippian Livingstone Formation contains large reserves of high-grade limestone at several localities in the Rocky Mountains and Foothills. Commercial development of the unit is now underway at Crowsnest Lake and at Exshaw for lime production, and future exploitation of these beds is feasible at Blairmore and Nordegg."

As a result of the main processes of the limestone treatment ? sawing, buffing and polishing, a technological waste is usually obtained. These final tailings consist of a water suspension with highly variable solid phase content and granulometric composition. Since the waste is conducted to a tailing pool or another place, this leads to environment pollution. In this work the slurry waste generated during the limestone processing in a Bulgarian limestone manufacturing company was characterized. The chemical composition, particle size distribution, solid phase content, whiteness, yellowness, abrasion, specific surface and density were determined. The possibility of obtaining building/construction materials from limestone processing waste was studied in a laboratory scale. The technological tests included thickening, filtration and drying of waste products. Continuous operation laboratory thickener was used. Coagulant Accepta® 8302 (aluminum sulphate solution) and anionic flocculant Magnafloc® 155 were found to be the most effective in the sedimentation of the products. Filtration tests were performed using a laboratory pressure filter. Drying tests were carried out in laboratory facilities using the direct heating method. On the basis of the laboratory results a technology for limestone treatment waste was developed. A production line for building materials from limestone slurry was set up. As a result the manufacturing company has a possibility to use circulating water.

In this paper: we focus on the properties of the widely-wed linear programming transportation (LPT) model formulated and developed by Koopmans (1) . There have been many models of this type applied especially in the field of energy economics (2-7). Since most of these applications can be linked to the seminal work of Henderson (8), we stall present our discussions based on his work.

Micropiles are routinely used in the United States for foundation support and underpinning applications. The high capacities achievable with the use of micropiles, combined with specialty rigs for easy installation in low headroom and difficult access areas makes them a good choice for situations often encountered on existing commercial projects. The bond zone of the pile is typically drilled into a competent stratum such as sands, gravels or bedrock. In this paper, the authors will discuss a project where the lack of a shallow ?competent stratum? led the geotechnical contractor to create their own bond zone for the micropiles using jet grouting. Due to problematic clay (CH) soils, the original foundation of a six story office building in west Houston had experienced up to five inches of differential movement in-between the shallow under-reamed shafts. The owner desired a permanent solution to the problem without disturbing the majority of the tenants. The structure was underpinned with a hybrid system of jet grouted micropiles as well as jet grouting alone and the structure was re-leveled using hydraulic equipment to within a 0.25? tolerance. Design, construction and sequencing of the project are discussed in the paper. QA/QC methods are also discussed, including coring for verification of jet grout column diameter as well as a full-scale micropile compressive load test. The structure was successfully re-leveled and the entire project was completed without disturbing any tenants on the floors two through six.

"The management of outlier grades in positively skewed gold distributions is a contentious issue. Incorporating outliers in standard ordinary kriging (OK) estimation procedures in a way that honours the data without smearing extreme grades into surrounding areas has been problematic. Cutting or capping of outliers to mitigate their influence in estimation techniques is common practice, while methods that manipulate the OK system of equations fail to honour the data. We propose a method of post-processing of kriging weights that provides realistic OK estimates and mitigates smearing without manipulating kriging equations or changing the original grades. The method requires that the data is not clustered, is approximately equally spaced, and is of the same support. Positively skewed data is ordered on attribute grade and nonlinearly transformed to a Gaussian histogram of categorical bins whose frequency is based on their likelihood of occurrence and location in the sample distributions. Factors that restrict kriging weights are calculated by dividing the percentage frequency of data in each bin by the percentage frequency of data in the bin with the highest frequency. Restriction factors applied to the kriging weights in the OK estimation restrict the range of influence in proportion to their probability of occurrence in the distribution. Smear reduction post-processing is easy to implement and addresses issues arising from negative kriging weights while considering the spatial location of samples, the sample grades, and their probability of occurrence. The method mitigates both smoothing and conditional bias.IntroductionOutliers are sample observations that deviate considerably from the standard or expected (Hawkins, 1980). These deviations can be high or low in grade depending on the distribution. The presence of outliers in a mine sampling campaign could provoke mixed reactions. Mining engineers might view high-grade outliers as a promise of achieving higher grades, while the geostatisticians view outliers as affecting the accuracy and precision of the overall estimate, among other issues. Having identified outliers, the geostatistician must decide how to account for their presence and treat them so that true underlying estimates are not distorted. Advanced knowledge of the deposit allows the geostatistician to identify and treat outliers acceptably, especially where samples are limited in number and the true grade distribution is uncertain. If ignored, or treated incorrectly, outliers are likely to lead to smearing of extreme grades into the surrounding estimates, thereby steering regions towards potential under- or over-estimation."

Since the late 1970's, the Roof Control Division (RCD) of MSHA's Technical Support has been performing linear analyses for the enhancement of miners' safety. This remote sensing process uses Landsat data to predict areas of potentially hazardous ground conditions in underground mines. To date approximately 700 analyses have been completed by the RCD, with nearly 75 being performed with the current equipment, software and methodology which was updated in early 1995. While success is difficult to measure, requests for linear analyses continue to come from large and small mining companies which suggests the industry's acceptance of the process.

The linear intercept distributions provide unambiguous and accurate characterizations of the texture of mineralogical materials. The relation between the measured linear intercept distributions and the spatial correlation function is shown to be given by: in the Laplace Transform domain. The linear intercept distributions of the two phases in a low- grade chromite-serpentinite ore were measured. and the spatial correlation functions for both phases were evaluated using the above relation. The correlation functions are the primary relations for integral geometric models of mineralogical texture and this work demonstrates the relation between the 10 stereological model and the 3D integral geometry model for mineral liberation.

Syncrude Canada produces a large part of Canada’s crude oil supply. The company processes about 225,000 bbl/day. The oil produced is used for jet and automobile fuel, home heating oil, plastics and other consumer synthetics. Crude oil is produced through a process of mining, extracting and upgrading bitumen. A rich supply of bitumen is contained in the Athabasca oil sands deposit in northern Alberta. Tailings from the bitumen processing are sent to a settling basin.

This report presents the results of a synthesis on the design and analysis of ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation. The synthesis included an industry survey concerning the practice of ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation. Participation in the survey was solicited by advertisements in several trade magazines and by e-mail for the DFI membership. The survey participants numbered 150. Their professional roles include consulting engineers, specialty contractors, design engineers, government engineers, and academicians. They represent a variety of geographical areas including North/Central/South America, United Kingdom, Middle East, Caribbean, Hawaii, Japan, India, Egypt, France, Australia and New Zealand. Upon completion of the survey, several professionals in the field of liquefaction and ground improvement were interviewed for them to elaborate on the survey results. The interviews are included in the Appendix of this report. Financial support for the project was provided by DFI and Dan Brown and Associates PC. The concept of the liquefaction mitigation synthesis was developed by DFI?s Ground Improvement Committee in recognition that: (a) The results of recent research and post-earthquake reconnaissance have challenged previously longheld beliefs about liquefaction and associated mitigation techniques, and; (b) The DFI membership and the engineering/construction industry are interested to know if and how engineers and designers are subsequently adjusting their practice in consideration of recent research and post-earthquake reconnaissance. For more detailed information on recent research and post-earthquake reconnaissance, presentations are available from the State-of-the-Art Forum: Liquefaction Consequences and Mitigation that was held in St. Louis in 2012. A commentary of the state-of-practice in ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation (prepared by DFI?s Ground Improvement Committee) is included in this issue of the DFI Journal. The author would like to thank the participants of the survey and especially Mr. Mike Jeffries, Dr. Les Youd, and Dr. Ikuo Towhata for their willingness to share their expertise in interviews. There are two basic problems when one attempts to separate a solution of metal ions utilizing a chelation-solvent extraction cascade (commonly called liquid ion exchange). First, it is impossible to produce any great degree of separation unless the separation factor (also called selectivity, which is the ratio of the distribution coefficients) is very large. Second, the richest possible extracted product, using an infinite number of equilibrium stages, is at best only in equilibrium with the feed solution. These factors combined with equipment design considerations have led to a situation where only the most selective chelating agents are applicable to economic industrial operations. The authors know that distillation techniques are used routinely to separate compounds with nearly identical relative volatilities and that there should be a way of operating solvent extraction cascades in an analogous manner to obtain separations of metal ions. The advantage of this approach would be that solutions of metal ions of any desired purity could be obtained even if the separation factor was close to unity. This paper presents this idea and suggests some possible applications.
