?Demand-side measure" means a rate, measure, action or program undertaken to conserve energy or promote energy efficiency?? (BCUC, 1996) In actual economical environment, business sustainability requires high-efficiency technological processes. That is why the efficiency concept has to be present at all levels of industrial activities. Nowadays, some purchasing decisions are still driven predominately by the purchase price, in spite of the evidence that such price represents up to 5 % to 7 % of the total costs of ownership with full consequences of energy efficiency and the impact on total ownership costs. The paper presents essentials of converter types and basics of the Global Efficiency (GEff) Concept that has been promoted over the last few years in South African industries (Pitis et al., 2006/7). GEff concept is proven as a useful tool used on price-efficiency decisions. Theoretical and technical aspects of this concept were substantiated with case studies. First part presented in this paper will describe how GEff concept was used on price ? efficiency decisions when single input or direct converters and systems (considered as low value equipments) have been replaced. Besides the impact of energy savings and new innovative developments, the paper suggests general other benefits of: ? Technical and economical performance improvements and competitiveness of mining corporations to international standards; ? Defusing incipient energy crisis in the sector; ? Improving environmental conditions; ? Creating new job opportunities in mining sector. Proposed concept in this paper could be further developed as models of improving companies? corporate energy policies.

The benefits of a no-idle policy reach far beyond carbon reduction and fuel savings, ranging from decreased maintenance to increased engine life. With products like battery-powered ac systems and diesel-fired heaters, going noidle is easier today than ever before. With both systems being manufactured to withstand the harsh environments of the mining industry, the end user will see a seamless change from conventional, inefficient belt-driven systems to future, standalone mobile equipment HVAC.The history of GHGs and climate changeIn 1896, Svante Arrhenius first claimed that the combustion of fossil fuels may eventually result in enhanced global warming, but not until 1955 did Gilbert Plass draw global attention to global warming by summarizing that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere would intercept infrared radiation and thus warm the earth. Then in the early 1960s, Charles Keeling developed modern technology to produce concentration curves for atmospheric CO2 (Fig.1).In 1988, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was founded by the United Nations after acknowledgment of a rising global annual temperature. The IPCC consists of more than 2,500 scientific and technical experts from more than 60 countries. Because climate change could not be solved by a single country, the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in 1998, requiring all participating countries to reduce their GHG emissions by at least 5 percent from the 1990 levels. The Protocol was signed by 186 countries in 2001 (since then several countries have retreated from the agreement, including the United States). In 2002, the Bush administration announced a policy for climate change relying on domestic, voluntary actions to reduce the "greenhouse gas intensity" of the United States economy by 18 percent by 2012. The U.S. still attends the Kyoto conference of parties (COPs) but does not participate in negotiations, as it is not bound by its terms."

"The use of thiosulfate as an alternative lixiviant for cyanide to treat complex refractory ores followed by the use of ion exchange resins (IX resins) for gold recovery has become an industrial reality. In this study, polyethylenimine (PEI) coated iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were used to recover gold from the leaching solutions that consist of calcium thiosulfate, copper and gold. The gold loaded MNPs were easily separated from the solution using an external magnetic field. Proposing a novel adsorbent with characteristically easy solid-liquid separation, to recover gold from synthetic thiosulfate leaching solutions and gold elution and reuse of MNPs were the main objectives of this study. Adsorption isotherm studies revealed that the data fitted both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models equally well. The maximum adsorption capacity was 18.5 mg/g at pH 8 and 50?C. According to thermodynamic studies the physisorption process was exothermic and spontaneous. Gold and copper elution, and the regeneration and reuse of the nanoparticles were investigated and promising results were obtained. Different elution systems comprising sulfites, chlorides, glycine, EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) and sodium hydroxide were considered. Among them, EDTA for copper elution and NaOH for gold elution were the most efficient eluants. Regeneration and reuse studies revealed that the MNPs can be used for several cycles without significant performance loss. INTRODUCTION Although cyanidation has been used for gold leaching for more than 100 years, some major drawbacks associated with cyanidation have led to a quest for alternative lixiviants for gold leaching. Cyanide is ineffective in treating carbonaceous refractory ores as gold cyanide complex is adsorbed onto the native carbon in the ore itself known as preg-robbing. On the other hand environmental concerns associated with cyanidation drives the need for environmental friendly alternatives for cyanide. As of today, thiosulfate is known to be the most extensively studied and most promising alternative lixiviant for cyanide in both technical and environmental perspectives (Aylmore and Muir 2001, Oraby 2009)."

The history of gold and silver analyses shows an interesting duality. On one hand, classical chemical and instrumental methods have evolved to meet changing needs, but on the other hand, the age-old and somewhat empirical fire assay has remained a popular tool. Inasmuch as gold and silver generally have been present in ores at low concentra¬tions, methods have been challenged by a need for sensitivity and selectivity coupled with reasonable assay time. A progressive increase in the importance of low grade materials as ore sources has led to the need for improved methods. Assays of these materials are required for process control and accounting in operating plants as well as for guiding research and development activities. The analytical response to these needs is evidenced by numerous reviews published through 1977-¬e.g., cf Kolthoff and Elving (1966), Beamish and Van Loon (1966, 1972, and 1977), Young (1971) , Mallett (1970), and Sen Gupta (1973). In this paper we present a brief sketch of the history and status of various gold and silver methods. A more detailed summary of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is Given, as this method has gained in popularity more than other assay methods. AAS methods currently in use are summarized and discussed briefly. This paper is not meant to be a detailed review, as are the above mentioned publications. Rather, we borrow from those works and more recent papers to report trends in gold and silver analyses (particularly in AAS). Also, we discuss some selected poten¬tial problems, and problems that have been experienced by this laboratory.

Primary sulphidic gold ores in the Archean provinces of Western Australia can be broadly sub-divided into pyritic, pyrite-telluride, arsenical and antimonial types. Pyritic ores contain only native gold, and are essentially not refractory. Arsenical ores almost always carry some invisible gold, and may vary from mildly to highly refractory. Pyrite-telluride ores contain gold-bearing tellurides, and are refractory to varying degrees. Antimonial ores usually contain aurostibite, and may be very difficult to process. A classification scheme for metallurgical processing, based on mineralogy, is proposed for the ores, and implications for processing are discussed.

"The principal role of the geologist is to recognize the existence of phenomena before trying to explain them" - B.M. Keilau, 1825; A. Holmes, 1965 Some important groups of mineral deposits in the layered rocks of orogenic belts or greenstone belts occur in horizons characterized by the presence of exceptional amounts of silica, iron and carbon, with more or less significant amounts of manganese. Generally, the rocks involved are well banded. In practice, these five physical features - four compositional and one geometric - are found with many lithological guises. Iron formation, in the full, modern sense of the term (James, 1954), quartzite, ferruginous quartzite, chert, jasper, "tetsusekiei" (Horikoshi, 1969), tuffaceous jasper ("purple porphyry" - Anderson and Creasey, 1958, p. 36), ferruginous or graphitic shale, argillite, slate or schist, and hematitic tuff are but a few of the more familiar of the names that have been assigned to these rocks. Widely acknowledged and well-documented examples of metallic deposits found in such sediments include concentrations of iron and manganese and stratabound, polymetallic, massive pyritic sulfides. Less familiar examples include occurrences of asbestos (Miles, 1953; and Coetzee, et al., 1976), antimony (Coetzee, 1976), and perhaps stratabound deposits of Au-Cu-U-W-etc., such as Aitik in Sweden (Mining Magazine, 1975; and Nilsson, 1979) and Olympic Dam in South Australia (Roberts and Hudson, 1983). The case of gold is intriguing. An association between gold and iron formation has been identified at several famous deposits and districts, such as Yellowknife, N.W.T. (Morton, 1979), Homestake, S. Dak. (Sawkins and Rye, 1974), Vubachikwe, Zimbabwe (Fripp, 1976) and the Barberton district, R.S.A. (Hammerbeck, 1976). Yet a critical reading reveals the existence of many other hitherto unsuspected examples. The purpose of this note is to draw attention to that omission and the apparent explanation for it. It is not hard to detect the two most probable reasons for the discrepancy between reality and the record.Most occurrences of gold are associated, not with the familiar banded iron formation or interbedded magnetite and chert (technically, the magnetite-banded variety of the oxide facies), but with the enigmatic carbonate, sulfide and silicate facies of iron formation and/or with rocks evidently related to iron formation. All too commonly, the unfamiliar facies of iron formation have been identified by field and mine geologists and not a few researchers as products of regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration, as mafic igneous rocks, or as conventional sediments, ie., without regard to their intrinsically ferruginous nature. The justification for these two complementary assertions is largely to be found in the recognition of a characteristic suite of metals and minerals in gold deposits known to be associated with iron formations. Although, from a geological standpoint, a lithological association is more important than a mineralogical assemblage, the latter is the more likely of the two to be diagnostic. This arises from the different natures of mineral and rock classifications, The identification of a mineral or an element is a matter of fact. Owing to the genetic component inseparable from petrographic nomenclature, viz., "igneous": a rock (believed to have been) derived from a melt, the identification of rocks depends on inferences or conclusions about their mode of formation - conclusions that are commonly debatable and, all too often, involve subjective judgements. This is especially prone to be true, if - as at many of the gold occurrences in question - the host rocks have been metamorphosed and/or "altered". In the notes that follow greater weight has accordingly been assigned to elemental and mineralogical than to host rock composition. In other words, if, in a given gold occurrence, the suite of metals and minerals present conforms to the standards of the subject class, whereas the names assigned to host rocks do not, the latter will be viewed as suspect.

INTRODUCTION Following the world stock market debacle in October 1987, it would have been foolhardy to expect that securing equity funding in 1988 would be easy. Indeed, major equity financing's for gold mining companies have until recently been few and far between in the weeks and months following Black Monday. As a result, gold bullion loans have taken on an increasingly important role among producing firms in the industry. During 1988, the role of bullion loans has become increasingly complex and controversial. Some observers herald the emergence of a new breed of bullion loans - such as the 1,000,000 ounce loan to Newmont Mining, and the 400,000+ ounce facilities drawn down by Bond International Gold and Placer Pacific - as both increasing the public's awareness of the technique, and representing the dawn of a new age of gold financing. But are these recent loan facilities significantly different than those issued worldwide during the early to mid 19801s? Similarly, observers have voiced concerns regarding the role that gold loans play in the world's bullion markets, specifically in relation to their impact on prices. Have the new generation of mega-loans depressed current and future prices? Has the current surge of bullion loans irrevocably changed the nature of the gold market? Is there an upper limit on the number and size of gold loans?

A gold sample assaying 11.4 g Ault was selected for this study. Approximately 99% of the gold in this sample occurs as discrete gold minerals; the balance occurring as invisible gold in pyrite (determined by SIMS analysis). The sample was coarsely ground and sieved, yielding -38, 17, 22 and 22 wt.% in the -400+160 um, -160+80 um, -80+40 µm and -40 µm size fractions. Assays of the size fractions gave a gold distribution of -32, 20, 21, and 27% respectively. Processing with the hydroseparator (model HS-02) gave two tailings products and one concentrate from each size fraction. Assays of the concentrate from each size fraction gave gold recoveries of -7, 7, 24, 19%, respectively. Polished sections were prepared from each hydroseparation product and studied by image analysis to automatically search for gold minerals. Calculations were done using the surface area of the grains of gold minerals found on the polished sections.

When the price of gold cracked the US$9.60/g(US$300/oz) mark last year, the gold-mining industry began to crank up again. This followed several years of gold prices that had languished in the mid-200s. Existing mines increased production and mines that had lain dormant for many years were getting second looks. The United States still produces a large amount of gold. But not much of the new production is coming from that country. Instead, strict environmental regulations still have companies wary of trying to invest the millions needed to start a new mine or expand existing ones. And after years of studies and negotiations between legislators, environmental interests and the mining industry, the United States still has not crafted a new mining law.

The aim of the project was the development of an electroforming process for the production of medical implants out of gold. To prove the applicability of this technology, tympanostomy tubes were chosen as demonstrators. These barbell-shaped tubes are usually produced mechanically; of silicone or, for higher therapeutic demands, of metal ? gilded silver or gilded stainless steel. Gold electroforming of the tubes as an alternative manufacturing process would reduce the expenditures for the mechanical preparation and lower the corrosion susceptibility significantly. To obtain electroformed gold tubes of the desired shape, the following steps are necessary: fabrication of a negative template by drilling holes with countersinks in an insulated aluminium sheet, electroforming process, removal of the aluminium by using a sodiumhydroxide solution. For the optimisation of the shape and surface quality of the tubes respectively the simplification of the manufacturing process, various parameters were tested, e.g. aluminium quality and sheet thickness, type of insulation layer, substrate processing, hydrodynamic conditions, type of electroforming electrolyte, electrodes position, etc. The manufactured tubes were characterised in view of thickness distribution, hardness, surface roughness and purity in comparison to mechanically produced reference tubes. From the results obtained during the project it can be concluded that electroforming processes can be easily adopted for the manufacture of medical implants. The time-consuming electroforming process is by far compensated by the simultaneous production of an arbitrary number of implants.

"All gold deposits within the Tisdale Group are spatially associated with carbonate alteration zones; however, not all carbonate alteration zones are host to gold mineralization.Within the komatiitic and magnesium tholeiitic volcanic rocks at the base of the Tisdale Group, discordant and stratabound carbonate alteration zones occur throughout. The alteration zones consist of a ferroan dolomite - quartz inner assemblage which is enveloped by calcite-quartz and an outer chlorite-rich subzone. Factors which control the distribution of carbonate alteration include joint systems, flow contacts, synvolcanic faults and bulk composition of the host rock.Two environments of carbonate alteration can be recognized: 1) The subsea-floor alteration zones developed within the volcanic rock succession where hydrothermal fluids did not discharge directly onto the sea floor. Insignificant gold production has come from this alteration environment. 2) Seafloor zones, which represent points of hydrothermal fluid discharge into the hydrosphere, are spatially associated with felsic volcanic rock complexes and are host to syngenetic, auriferous cherty dolomite.Carbonatized, magnesium tholeiitic basalts, which are host to the auriferous, cherty dolomite, are enriched in antimony (>0.35 ppm), boron (>30 ppm), gold (>5 ppb) and lithium (> 35 ppm), but are depleted in copper ( < 70 ppm), with respect to carbonatized basalts not associated with gold. Orerelated, altered komatiitic flows can be screened using gold (>5 ppb), lead(> 10 ppm), arsenic(> 70 ppm) and antimony (>1 ppm).The habit, petrographic characteristics and certain geochemical characteristics of the altered volcanic rocks suggest that the hydrothermal fluid was of sea-water origin."

A study was carried out to process a sulfide mineral concentrate from Norwest of Mexico containing 97 g/t Au, 0.15% Cu, and 15% Fe. An oxidative acid pretreatment was investigated using ferric sulfate as oxidant, followed by leaching of gold with sodium cyanide. Scanning electron microscopy, SEM-EDS, and X-ray diffraction, XRD, the analysis confirms the presence of quartz and pyrite species. First, a leaching was carried out without pretreatment, at ambient conditions, T = 25 °C and P = 1 atm, obtaining only a 45.2% gold extraction. Once the presence of Fe and Cu sulfides had been confirmed, the Eh-pH diagrams were constructed for the Fe-S-H2O and Cu-S-H2O systems, where it is appreciated that pyrite and chalcocite can dissolve with high oxidation potentials and forming sulfur, oxidizing to sulfate at highly acidic conditions. The oxidized concentrate was neutralized and adjusted to pH > 10.5; it was leached at ambient conditions, at different particle sizes, 44, 37, and 26.5μm, achieving an Au extraction of 75% using a concentration of 0.5% NaCN, 26.5μm particle size, 20% solids, and P = 1atm. Then the oxidized material was subjected to different temperatures, 25, 50, and 70 °C, under the same conditions and obtaining Au extractions up to 92% at 70°C. Additionally, the leaching process was compared using an autoclave reactor at moderate pressures, obtaining an increase in the extraction of Au up to 98% in 2 h, at T = 70 °C and P = 0.62 MPa.

Choosing a mining method for an underground ore body is a complicated and often iterative process. Advances in technology give the design team an overwhelming array of possibilities for methods and equipment. Hecla&apos;s recent discovery of the deep Gold Hunter ore body has given the staff at the Lucky Friday Mine the exciting challenge of determining the optimum mining method. Taking an ore body from prospect to production requires traditional resource characterization, including drilling, delineating and modeling. Developing the mining plan is an evolving process, changing with each new piece of information as the project progresses through exploration and development.

WHAT is the likelihood if any-that a real gold mining industry will be developed in the southern Appalachian region? Has the increase in the dollar value of gold from $20.67 to $35 per ounce potency to turn the trick? Suppose it be assumed that the price of gold will, at worst, not recede, and that the cost of digging ore and treating it of which the average level of commodity prices and wages is a fair index-will, at most, not exceed that prevailing in 1926. One may or may not accept these as reasonable assumptions; but one must arbitrarily remove some of the potential variables if one is to get anywhere on a problem like this. As a matter of fact, this article is not going to venture a conclusive answer to the question that has been posed; but it will endeavor to present some of the factors that have a bearing on the problem. The writer spent ten days visiting a dozen properties in Virginia and the Carolinas early in April, 1935, and in doing so got a first-hand slant on mining conditions in the domain of King Cotton.

A rise from the $350/oz. level to $400 has a far greater impact on profitability of a gold mine than does, say, the invention of a way to cut the cost of gold extraction by $1.00 per ton, which in itself would represent a major achievement. Likewise, the discovery of a big, high-grade, easy­to-extract gold ore deposit would have a bigger impact on the fate of a mining company than, say, finding a way to double the energy efficiency of a grinding circuit.

The method of chloride-hypochlorite leaching has the advantages of short process, low pollution and higher in reaction rate compared with the traditional leaching method. In this research, NaCl - NaClO solution is used to leaching gold from a refractory gold concentrate, and the influence of NaCl and NaClO concentration, reaction time to the leaching rate were investigated in this experiment. The raw materials and the leaching residue were characterized by a series of analysis methods such as XRD, XRF, SEM and EDS. Results indicate that the leaching rate and the desulfurization rate can be achieved at 96.26% and 98% with most optimum conditions as follows: NaCl concentration 50g/L, NaClO concentration 200g/L, Liquid-solid ratio 10:1, the best reaction time was 150 mins. And these conditions should be guaranteed pH<8.0, ORP>900mV.

THE present era of exploitation of the Little Long Lac and Sturgeon River areas commenced in 1925, when Beardmore Gold Mines started development of what is now the property of Northern Empire Mines. A shaft was sunk in 1927-28 and a very limited amount of underground work was carried out, following which the property was shut down. It remained idle until 1932, when Empire Star Mines, a Delaware Company, optioned the property. This Company formed the Northern Empire Mines Company, Limited, to operate the mine, and immediately instigated an aggressive programme of surface and underground development. By the summer of 1933, sufficient ore was indicated to justify the installation of a small mill. The decision was also reached to bring in electric power. A power-line was built from Hydro, the Ontario Power Commission&apos;s development on the Nipigon river, to the mine, a distance of approximately 50 miles. This work was entirely financed by Northern Empire Mines. Mill construction was commenced in October, 1933, and completed by March, 1934, thus making this mine the first producer in this district.

"Gold-bearing mineralization at Anomaly A occurs in polydeformed Ordovician turbidites of the Kendall Mountain Formation of the St. Croix belt in southwestern New Brunswick, and is hosted by WSWtrending, shallow-dipping, brittle-ductile high-strain zones associated with the latest stage of the second of four regional deformation events. Gold-bearing syn-deformational stockwork, massive, and multiply brecciated quartz-sulfide veined zones form irregular pods and sheets up to several meters thick, which contain arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, stibnite, and a variety of rare minerals that are gold-bearing. Mineralized zones are enveloped by locally auriferous, weakly to intensely altered wall rock. Vein paragenesis includes: (1) early (pre- to syn-D2) quartz-chlorite veins that are largely the product of migration of quartz by pressure solution; (2) crosscutting, multiphase, vuggy quartz-sulfide veins that contain most of the gold and are interpreted to be structurally controlled; (3) late, crosscutting, nondeformed, non-gold-bearing veins containing laumontite, chlorite, muscovite, quartz, fluorite, and base metal sulfides. Carbonate-poor alteration associated with zones of gold mineralization is lithology-specific, and appears to reflect overprinting of multiple events. Major elements removed during alteration include Si, Na, Mn, and Mg. The minor and trace elements removed include Co, Li, Sc, and possibly Sr, Ni, and Zn. Minor and trace elements added include Au, Ag, As, Sb, S, and possibly F, Cu, Pb, and Zr. On the basis of proximity, time constraints, and a similar ore mineral assemblage, gold mineralization at Anomaly A is interpreted to be a distal equivalent of the intrusion-related gold mineralization at the nearby Clarence Stream Main zone deposit. La minéralisation aurifère de l’Anomalie A se trouve dans des turbidites Ordoviciennes polydéformées de la Formation de Kendall Mountain, dans la ceinture de Ste-Croix du sud-ouest du Nouveau Brunswick, où elle est contenue dans des zones de déformation fragile-ductile à faible pendage de direction OSO associées au dernier stade du second de quatre épisodes de déformation régionale. Les zones aurifères syn-déformationelles se présentent en forme massive, de stockwork, ou de veines de quartz-sulfure bréchifiées à répétition formant des lentilles irrégulières et des couches de plusieurs mètres d’épaisseur contenant de l’arsénopyrite, de la pyrrhotite, de la pyrite, de la stibine, ainsi que divers minéraux aurifères rares. Les zones minéralisées sont entourées d’une enveloppe de roches faiblement à intensément altérées, localement aurifères. La paragénèse des veines comprend : (1) des veines précoces de quartz-chlorite (pré- à syn-D2) qui sont principalement le produit de la migration du quartz par solution-pression; (2) des veines polyphasées de quartz drusique et de sulfures contenant la plus grande partie de l’or, celles-ci sont considérées comme étant sujettes à un contrôle structural; (3) des veines tardives stériles, sécantes et non déformées contenant de la laumontite, de la chlorite, de la muscovite, du quartz, de la fluorite et des sulfures de métaux usuels. Les zones de minéralisation aurifère sont associées à une faible altération en carbonate contrôlée par la lithologie et semble résulter de la superposition d’événements multiples. Les éléments majeurs perdus durant l’altération sont le Si, le Na, le Mn et le Mg. Les éléments mineurs et traces perdus durant l’altération sont le Co, le Li, le Sc et possiblement le Sr, le Ni et le Zn. Les éléments mineurs et traces enrichis comprennent l’Au, l’Ag, l’As, le Sb, le S et possiblement le F, le Cu, le Pb et le Zr. In the past marine mining technology has focused on bulk mining of base metals from polymetallic massive sulfides. This has not been very successful because of the relatively low unit value of these metals and other reasons such as water depth, etc.. The process of gold enrichment in hydrothermal deposits is controlled through five different factors: (1) nature and source of the solution, (2) source of the gold, (3) a mechanism for mobilizing and transporting, (4) a mechanism for deposition, and (5) a mechanism to preserve the deposit. Gold has been identified in marine polymetallic massive sulfides from various locations on the ocean floor (e.g., spreading centers, seamounts) with contents ranging up to 5 ppm Au. This is within the current range of 1.0 to 7.0 ppm gold content which classifies gold ores. The gold appears to have been derived during hydrothermal alteration of the oceanic crust. Until the present there has been little attention to the possibility of mining gold or other precious metals in the marine environment. However, the magnitude of hydrothermal alteration (seawater can penetrates to a depth of 5 km into the oceanic crust) and primary gold contents of the rocks in the pathway of the fluid indicates that major gold deposits must have formed on or in the ocean floor, but they have not been found. To find a big deposit might only take an exploration model exclusively designed for gold exploration on the ocean floor.

RICE LAKE-BERESFORD LAKE area, situated 100 miles northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1), is Manitoba&apos;s foremost gold mining district, although it is exceeded in gold production in the Province by the Flin Flon base-metal mining district. At present, the area is producing at the rate of about one and three-quarter million dollars annually, almost entirely from the San Antonio and Gunnar mines. The total production to date is about $14,000,000. Of this total, over $7,000,000 has come from the San Antonio mine, over $2,000,000 from the Gunnar mine, about $4,000,000 from the Central Manitoba mine, and the balance from several smaller properties. The writer has led Geological Survey parties in the area for the past four summers. The present paper gives a summary of the results of this work and also includes the findings of C. S. Lord, who was in charge of a party for one year. Much valuable information was obtained from earlier published reports on the area and from officials of mining companies, to whom the writer is indebted for their kindly co-operation. It is impossible in this short paper to give proper credit to the earlier workers or to discuss certain points o disagreement between their conclusions and those presented here.
