The deep sea hydrothermal deposits are one of the most prospecting resources, and various works to develop these mines are now underway. There are also various methods for the pre-site survey of the mines: acoustic survey, electro-magnetic survey, and others. However, as a precise method at the final survey, drilling/coring is indispensable to confirm the three-dimensional distribution and to grasp the dignity of the ores for the final decision of industrialization. This drilling/coring at the final survey is done at many points with distance of 15~25m between each point for on-land deposits. This means that 1km by 1km square area requires (1,000m/25m)2 ~ (1,000m/15m)2 = 1,600 ~ 4,500 holes. The drilling/coring depths will be around 30m or more for the hydrothermal deposits. This depth seems very shallow, but because the stratum is very brittle and is very difficult to core, the average core recovery ratio is around 50%, and 0% core recovery happens very often. Thus, the indispensable work of coring for grasping the dignity of ores is a very difficult work although the coring depth is shallow, and also the required number of holes is enormous. Conventional drilling/coring method on the ocean is to use drillship. However, the cost is very huge. Recently a new technique has come out which is to use remotely controlled drilling machine on seafloor. This machine seems to have a very good performance. However, it is reported that the available inclination of the seafloor where the machine sits on must be less than 15 degrees. The sea floor inclinations of active hydrothermal vents area are usually very steep and slopes of 45 degrees or more are prevailing and it seems very hard to carry out drilling/coring for the machine at these steep slopes, although it is impossible to mine the ore at these areas because the temperature is too high to work there. The inclination of the sea floor at the dead or paused hydrothermal vents area where ore recovery is possible may be not so steep, and the machine may work well. However, the required number of holes is still a very heavy burden. In order to solve these problems, the author proposes a new concept of drilling/coring system operated from a conventional research ship. This concept is still a desk plan, but the author wants to realize this system at any means.

Some of these data are processed in-mission to enable operators to readily access it when the vehicle is recovered. HUGIN is well suited to mining survey and exploration. Capable of reaching 6000 metre depths and conducting missions greater than 60 hours, HUGIN collects seabed sonar imagery, sub-bottom profiles, laser and camera images plus environmental data, with sensors running concurrently.

Welina mai to the 40th Underwater Mining Institute, UMI 2011 - Marine Minerals: Recent Innovations in Technology. Since the first conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1970, the UMI Founder Professor Robby Moore always insisted on actively seeking the participation of industry, academia, and government. History has proven the wisdom of this approach, which is probably the key to its survival for so many years. The UMI is very much influenced by the cyclical pressures of the minerals commodity markets. When minerals demand and prices are rising rapidly, industrial participation in the Institute dominates the agenda, and participants share optimistic and aggressive views of the commercial prospects of the day. When metals prices are falling and world economies lethargic, academic experts continue to provide guidance and breakthroughs in the concepts and practices of exploration, technology, and environmental protection. Throughout the ups and downs, government participants provide a stabilizing force with conservative and environmentally sensitive policy statements, patient development efforts with long-term objectives, authoritative resource assessments and, sometimes, much needed regulatory clarity.

INTRODUCTION For the last decades, deep-sea marine resources such as seabed massive sulfides (SMS), polymetallic nodules and ferromanganese crusts (Fe-Mn crusts) have received an ever- increasing amount of attention worldwide for their abundance in critical metals and potential commercial value. This interest has mostly been driven by the growing world demand for raw materials, in particular for high- and green-technology applications (e.g., hybrid and electric cars, batteries, photovoltaic solar cells, cell phones, super magnets), as well as by industrialized countries governments other than BRICS states need to secure a more diversified supply of metals, resulting in a new deep ocean exploration boom. Since the oceans and its resources are increasingly seen as indispensable for humans needs and their challenges in the decades to come, this boom increments pressure on marine areas, either in international or within countries economic exclusive zone (EEZ). Since 2002, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) has signed up 29 contracts with several entities and national governments from multiple countries (e.g., Japan, China, Germany, France, Russia, India, Rep. of Korea, UK, Canada, Brazil) for exploration for deep-sea mineral resources in international waters, either for scientific or commercial proposes, which together cover over 1.3 million km2 [1]. In turn, over 300 exploration licenses, covering more than 650,000 km2, have been granted within the EEZ of Pacific countries such as Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu [2, 3]. This number is expected to increase very rapidly, as 77 countries have proposed to the United Nations the extension of their continental shelf in order to extend their EEZ and jurisdiction over potential deep-sea mineral resources [4]. Its estimated that 42% of the potential areas for SMS occurrences, 54% for cobalt-rich Fe-Mn crusts, and 19% for polymetallic nodules lie within the EEZ of coastal countries [5]. In addition, a huge amount of seafloor is yet to be explored and evaluated. Combined, the size of the granted exploration areas represents less than 10% of the overall area thought as most favorable for the occurrence of the 3 types of deep-sea mineral resources above mentioned. This means that today’s assessments on deep-sea mineral resources are only a rough approximation.

Analysis of ground and airborne radiometric measurements in the Saquarema region (Rio de Janeiro) provides new insights into the breakdown and transport of mineral aggregates containing monazites, under sub-tropical weathering conditions. The breakdown process, accompanied by loss of low-density clay fractions in weathered materials is considered responsible for the observed patterns in relative enrichment of thorium and uranium along the migration paths of radionuclides. The characteristic features of these patterns provide clues as to the time and distance scales associated with processes of weathering and erosion. It is also possible to determine approximate locations of concentrations of accessory minerals. In this context, we advance the hypothesis that large under-water monazite deposits may be present along the offshore sand banks, in the coastal region of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Much advance has been made in offshore hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation in India. But the same amount of success could not be achieved in the case of other offshore minerals which are amenable for mining. However, employing present technology, there should not be any difficulty in successful exploitation with minimum environmental hazards. A demonstration is provided by considering the conditions prevailing in the Kerala offshore (southwest coast of India) scenario of monazite, ilmenite, phosphatic mud and calcareous deposits. Mud banks are unique phenomenon of the Kerala coast during monsoon season. Acting as barriers to waves, mud banks protect portions of the beaches from being eroded and trap sediments from either side facilitating growth of adjacent beach. The easy minable possibilities of the phosphatic mud during non-monsoon season with less pollution hazards and dumping back the waste material after processing for phosphate at the breaker zones to reduce the erosional effects on the coast make the exploitation economic and ecofriendly unlike the benefication of the lowgrade phosphate ores on land on a comparatively larger area and subsequent crushing, transport and resulting pollution.

In a context of scarce mineral resources, coupled with an increasing global demand in metals due to the exponential growth of newly industrialized countries, the mining industry will inevitably have to deal with tomorrow?s resources: underwater deposits. Three types of offshore deposits are known to date: polymetallic nodules, cobalt-rich crusts and hydrothermal sulphides. The latter, regarding the political-economic context, is now considered most likely to be exploited in a near future. Operating a mine critically requires accurate knowledge on geotechnical properties of the ore. A question is thus to be asked: Is there a particular spatial organization of geotechnical properties in a hydrothermal sulfide mound? In the present study, geotechnical properties have been measured for 29 sulfide samples of known origin, completed by 14 measurements on Western Pacific specimens from Yamazaki et al. (1990) and Yamazaki and Park (2003). From these geotechnical data on 43 sulfide samples, we can provide some answers to this question above, crucial for future exploitation of underwater mines.

The Gavia Autonomous Underwater Vehicle is a two-man portable AUV that is capable of performing seafloor surveys in water depths to 2000 meters. The standard survey sensor suite includes a dual frequency side scan sonar and high resolution digital camera. Additional survey sensors are currently being incorporated into the Gavia AUV, include Sub Bottom sonar, Swath Bathymetry sonar and Multi Beam sonar. The modular design of the Gavia AUV allows the end user to quickly incorporate new sensors including client developed propriety sensors.

In the past marine mining technology has focused on bulk mining of base metals from polymetallic massive sulfides. This has not been very successful because of the relatively low unit value of these metals and other reasons such as water depth, etc.. The process of gold enrichment in hydrothermal deposits is controlled through five different factors: (1) nature and source of the solution, (2) source of the gold, (3) a mechanism for mobilizing and transporting, (4) a mechanism for deposition, and (5) a mechanism to preserve the deposit. Gold has been identified in marine polymetallic massive sulfides from various locations on the ocean floor (e.g., spreading centers, seamounts) with contents ranging up to 5 ppm Au. This is within the current range of 1.0 to 7.0 ppm gold content which classifies gold ores. The gold appears to have been derived during hydrothermal alteration of the oceanic crust. Until the present there has been little attention to the possibility of mining gold or other precious metals in the marine environment. However, the magnitude of hydrothermal alteration (seawater can penetrates to a depth of 5 km into the oceanic crust) and primary gold contents of the rocks in the pathway of the fluid indicates that major gold deposits must have formed on or in the ocean floor, but they have not been found. To find a big deposit might only take an exploration model exclusively designed for gold exploration on the ocean floor.

For the past twenty years or so the oceans of the world have been transformed in the minds of most Americans from the ultimate and nearly infinite receptacles for sewage and other wastes to an almost sacrosanct and threatened last refuge of Mother Nature from man on Earth. While this general movement has helped somewhat to moderate the flows of pollutants into the oceans, it has had severe and sometimes devastating impacts upon various attempts to develop seabed mineral resources. Marine mining proposals have been easy targets for attack. In most cases, they have short or no histories and involve prototype or first-generation methods. They commonly lack major financial backing, and do not command significant public support. Their constituents are limited. Opposition movements to such proposals have been able to evoke strong support by appealing to this "last refuge" image and depicting mining operations as the final assault. In mounting these public appeals, the movements obtain visibility and support. Because of the small and sometimes tentative status of the constituencies which support particular proposal s, the potential liabilities for opposition movements are minimal.

Efficient and successful mineral processing is dependent on detailed knowledge of the materials and minerals that are to be separated and concentrated. Common bulk methodologies such as XRD and XRF are fast and easy, and can provide an overview of the mineralogy and bulk chemistry of the material. However, they will not provide any textural information. Knowledge of the often intricate interaction between minerals in seafloor massive sulfide deposits is crucial in plant design for mineral processing. Samples from the Loki’s Castle hydrothermal vent have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), QEMSCAN, Electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA), and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD). Processing experiments used froth flotation and leaching techniques. The typical line of operation in ore characterization is shown in Figure 1. Mineral processing may be commenced after any stage of ore characterization. However, it is ideal to have completed as many steps in the ore characterization as possible in order to have the most information of the initial feed material. The main economic minerals in the samples are isocubanite (CuFe2S3), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), and sphalerite (ZnS), with minor galena (PbS) and trace amounts of Au and Ag. The minerals show complex intergrowth textures down to the nanometer scale. These samples exemplify the need for advanced microtextural analyses to adequately characterize ore material prior to processing. The complex textures hamper the use of flotation as an efficient technique, due to the inability to sufficiently liberate the different minerals and problems with selectively floating isocubanite. Thus, leaching was the preferred method for extracting metals.

Mining is a waste intensive industry, oftentimes producing hundreds of kilograms of waste rock and tailings for every gram of metal recovered. Disposal of mine tailings is a major concern in most mining operations. In Southeast Alaska the steep terrain and high seismic hazard province limits cost effective opportunities for land disposal of tailings. The lack of infrastructure and long travel distances generally limits secondary utilization of tailings, as well. Since the mines are located close to tidewater, submarine tailings disposal is an attractive option for tailings management. At the present time the EPA will not issue a permit that authorized marine tailings disposal from any mining process that includes flotation technology. Upland disposal is the "Best available technology" and must be used. Consideration of submarine disposal is generally precluded because the tailings are contaminated with fluids from the flotation process. However, when developing technological solutions to minimize environmental disturbance, destruction, pollution, and risk, submarine tailings disposal deserves another evaluation. In Southeast Alaska it may be the "Best available technology" based on an assessment of all issues and concerns in these mining projects.

The details in small-scale variability of the geological occurrence and chemical composition of ferromanganese crusts are not yet well understood, although the northwestern Pacific seamounts are believed to be among the most promising areas for rare metal resources. Our belief is that geological observations and geochemical analyses are still insufficient for economic evaluation or for discussion of depositional processes and environments. Our team, composed of geologists, mineralogists, geochemists, physical engineers, and microbiologists has attempted to utilize an ROV for in-situ measurement and for sampling of undisturbed and uncontaminated ferromanganese crusts at three typical seamounts in the NW Pacific near the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone. The first ROV geological survey of ferromanganese crusts was successfully completed, and the ROV proved to be the most powerful, efficient and elegant method to date. The collected samples (more than total 1 ton of crusts, at more than 100 sites along a total of approximately 10 km of survey lines) were most suitable to analyze water-depth dependency and secular variation of their composition. The intact surfaces of crusts, collected without the usual abrasion caused by dredging, were also valuable for microbial study of Mn oxidizing bacteria. The ROV sampling devices, however, can be improved with further sophisticated drills or rock saw blades in the future.

Diamond production from the reworked beach and river channel gravels along the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia is well known throughout the world, not only for the exceptional quality of the diamonds, but also for the sheer scope of the operations. To date an estimated 140 million carats have been produced from the resource worth some US$40 billion in today's money terms. It is therefore not surprising that it didn't take long before the attention turned towards the possible extension of this valuable diamond resource on similar submerged beaches in the adjacent territorial waters of South Africa and Namibia. This has proved to be a very successful move as the marine production in Namibia today constitutes 48% of that country's total diamond production. Although small scale recovery of diamonds from the sea commenced in the 1950's, the first large scale production came from the operations of the Texan entrepreneur, Sam Collins, in the 1960's. The De Beers Group, which took over Sam Collin's operations in 1969 had all the concession areas, as well as the financial and human resources to tackle the new mining frontier in the correct way by years of data gathering (ie diamond reserves and seafloor terrain studies) before commencing with large scale mining operations in the 1980's. Those who are familiar with the beach mining operations along the South African and Namibian west coasts will have appreciation for the daunting task of surgically removing the payable portion of diamond deposits from the non-payable material on the one hand, and the complex uneven fractured and gullied bed-rock floor of the deposits on the other hand. Not to mention the additional complexities of large boulders and hard calcretised diamond gravel layers (conglomerate) which are sometimes associated with the deposits. It was a natural development that the sea diamond mining operations were approached with the known information of the land operations, attempting to duplicate land mining operations in the sea, but taking cognisance of the variations of the terrain in the different areas. For instance, we encounter the following variations, and combinations, off the Namibian Coast. ? Close inshore - holocene sand cover often masks large areas of potentially diamondiferous gravels. ? Ocean mining has a number of problems which are critical to its development: ? Political hurdles on national and international stages ? The worldwide economic situation, with the possibliity of a recession ? Financial difficulties in funding further work ? Technical problems for the development of ocean mining and transport subsystems ? Demands for technology transfer This paper touches the last two points and provides some thoughts for discussion and creative objectification. The many technical problems of ocean mining will be identified and some proposed solutions will be investigated relative to the state-of-the-art technology of ocean mining and nodule transport. An outlook into the future attempts identification of the steps necessary to eventually develop components for workable systems that are not only technically but also economically feasible.

In late 1988, the Committee for Coordination of Joint Prospecting for Mineral Resources in South Pacific Offshore Areas (CCOP/SOPAC), Suva, Fiji, consulted the Continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center regarding low-tech, low-cost, reconnaissance sampling systems for a variety of nearshore needs. Materials of interest to several member island nations included silica and calcareous aggregate for cement manufacture, sand for beach replenishment, heavy minerals, and precious metals. A principal criteria of the system was that it be of low-tech design, and as far as possible, suitable for construction on the islands from available materials. It should also be operable with SOPAC personnel on island vessels of opportunity. The system selected to satisfy these requirements was a convertible drill of basic airlift design, capable of operating with easy modification as either a vibralift or airlift, depending on the desired application. The basic system included a drill pipe constructed of heavy duty 76 mm (3") black iron pipe, divided into three 3 meter sections (for ease of transport), fitted with an air intake manifold and bit at the lower end. A 25 mm (1") galvanized pipe assembled in three similar sections and clamped to the drill pipe served as a water jet to assist in cutting. Air was supplied to the manifold by means of a 12 mm (1/2") pipe also clamped along the length of the drill pipe. Under the provisions of the U.N. Law of the Sea Convention Ireland is likely to have mineral rights to an area of continental shelf some six times its present land area. Apart from the major potential hydrocarbon basins which are currently the focus of active commercial exploration, little is known about the mineral resources of this vast area. In recent years a variety of mineral resources however have been identified from the coastal region. These include Sand and Gravel aggregates, Calcaraeous Algae (Lithothamnion), Heavy Mineral Sands and Coal deposits. The potential also exists in the coastal zone for buried placer deposits and base metal deposits. Several million cubic metres of gravel and hundreds of millions of cubic metres of sand have been identified by the Geological Survey of Irelands (G.S.I) Marine Unit off the east coast. The greater part of these deposits lies within the 10 metre depth contour and are easily recoverable. Irish aggregate needs at present are well supplied by onshore Pleistocene glacial deposits. Commercial interest in offshore deposits is in supplying coastal areas which are locally poor in aggregate and major coastal construction works. The possibility of supplying the large British and Continental European Market nearby also exists.

The Marine Minerals Technology Center has taken advantage of recent price and performance .improvements in PC hardware and software to upgrade its seismic acquisition system. In the past, single channel, high resolution, seismic data was displayed on an analog plotter and stored on tape. Associated navigation data was logged by hand or on a chart plotter. The navigation and seismic data were synchronized with time so that they could be cross referenced. The Center's new system uses PC's for the acquisition of both seismic and navigation data. Off the shelf software products were purchased for each task. Elics Delphl performs the seismic acquisition and processing, and GeoResearch, Inc. Geolink provides the navigation interface. A navigation string is sent from the navigation PC to the seismic PC via an RS232 line. This string consists of a time and location fix, as well as speed and heading data. The navigation string is then imbedded in the header of the seismic record. The Geolink software is capable of monitoring other devices in addition to the GPS used for positioning. Device inputs are attributed to the location data to provide easy construction of a navigation GIs. Currently the Center is logging fathometer data along with the navigation. As a result, a map of bathymetry along the tracklines can be available shortly after completion of the cruise.

The smelting leaching process is known as one of the most favorite methods for the processing of deep-sea manganese nodules because of its smaller environmental impact and easiness of manganese recovery. The sulphuric acid pressure leaching of the matte prepared from deep-sea manganese nodules was studied to dissolve the valuable metals. Almost complete dissolution of Cu, Ni, and Co from matte was achieved under the following conditions: leaching temperature 180°C, time 4 hours, PO2 10 kgs/cm2, acid concentration 2.5% (vol/vol), pulp density 5%, ammonium sulphate 40 g/l. Under these conditions the iron concentration of leach liquor was 0.95 g/l. Optimization of leaching parameters was carried out by statistical design of experiments using 23 full factorial matrix. The linear and interaction co-efficients were evaluated for dissolution of metal values and also for iron concentration in leach liquors.

IHC Merwede is world market leader in the construction of specialist dredging equipment; it is a company with a rich history. The Netherlands is a coastal western country for which water management is a very important issue. Without the enclosure of the coastal areas with dikes and dunes almost two third of the Netherlands would be flooded. These activities are mostly performed by the dredging industry and are the foundation of the dredging industry as it is today. Besides land protection this industry also carries out infrastructure maintenance and performs land reclamation projects. In essence the dredging industry is specialized in horizontal excavation activities and operations in shallow waters with the purpose of gathering bottom sediments and disposing it at a different location. The development is that the activities are moving to deeper waters to a depth of up to 150m. A few years ago IHC Merwede received a request to perform the shallow water excavation techniques at a depth of approximately 2000 meters for the deep sea mining market. In response to the increasing number of requests for deep sea dredging and mining application solutions, IHC Merwede combined all of its activities in this sector to create a new, specially equipped operational unit, IHC Deep Sea Dredging & Mining (IHC DSDM).
