In this study, the statistical design of experiments (DOE) was applied to study and regulate the properties of near-eutectic Al-11%Si alloys. Develop regression equations for such response variables as hardness, yield stress, ultimate tensile stress, percent elongation, total cutting force, cutting power, and tool life together with other factors which, include the percentage composition of the alloying elements, and the requisite modification (Sr) level. These equations may be analyzed quantitatively to acquire an understating of the effects which the main variables and their interactions may have on the mechanical behaviour and the machinability of the alloy under investigation. The results reveal that increasing the levels of Cu and Fe content results in an increase in hardness, yield stress, and ultimate tensile strength in both modified and non-modified alloys. On the other hand, both Cu and Fe appear to affect the percentage elongation adversely, whereas the Sr-level has a positive effect on this parameter. It was found that Sr-levels have the most significant effect on the cutting forces and cutting power followed by the content in Fe and Cu. The results also reveal that the interaction coefficients of these variables have a significant effect on tool life compared to the main independent variables. This fact may be attributed to the formation of complex insoluble phases between Cu, Fe, Si, and Al as investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) attached to an EDX analysis system. The accuracy of the regression equations in predicting the expected properties has been verified by carrying out random experiments in the range of variation of these variables.

The conventional low temperature process for extracting' helium from natural gas involves liquefying the whole gas stream in order to remove the relatively small fraction of helium. A process based on the selective diffusion of helium through a semi-permeable barrier is, in principle, more economical and flexible, particularly for the treatment of small re-serves and low concentrations. The well-known permeability of glass to helium offers the possibility of such a diffusion process and McAfee of the Bell telephone Laboratories showed in 1958 that practical separations could be achieved by passing natural gas over bundles of fine capillary glass tubing. Developmental studies have been carried out involving larger units and more extended field tests than those of McAfee. Fine capillary tubing of Pyrex glass 0.0035 in. diameter was prepared by drawing ordinary 6 mm. laboratory tubing in a furnace. Design for safety is critical to metallurgical plants, due to the inherently dangerous nature of their processes. Two significant areas of concern are: 1. preventing catastrophic process failures that cause damage or injury; and 2. operational safety that directly affects those working in or living near the plant. Process safety involves human behaviour, but the designer can eliminate or control hazards by engineering approaches, and control impacts through the design of the operating procedures. The tools available to guide safe facility design include bowtie analysis, hazard analysis, and hazard and operability studies. Clean plant design principles can guide the design process to address in-plant occupational health and safety issues. Auditing and review is a key part of the overall design process.

"Pre-oxidation and cyanide leaching behavior of gold in the presence of sulfide minerals were reviewed, focused on the effects of oxygen injection in the gold leaching process. Generally, pre-oxidation and gold leaching kinetics from iron sulfide refractory minerals, such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, pentlandite and arsenopyrite, can be enhanced with higher dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration. However, most of copper sulfide minerals dissolved well both in water and cyanide solutions, and copper from the minerals consumed DO and cyanide to oxidize and leach. Only in the presence of chalcopyrite, gold leaching was effectively occurred with increasing DO. However, chalcocite and covellite severely retarded gold leaching. Stibnite, an antimony mineral, formed a passive film on the gold surface under any DO conditions, and it slowed gold leaching. This impeding effect can be alleviated by leaching at low pH or adding lead salt. Using oxygen and lead together can make synergistic effect in oxidation of sulfide minerals and can enhance gold extraction. Depending on the mineralogical characteristics of the ore, the optimum DO and lead concentrations can be optimized. However, lead can cause environmental problems, and so its dosage should be minimized or eliminated by substituting it with oxygen injection.INTRODUCTIONGold ores containing sulfide minerals are becoming more significant as high grade gold oxide deposits are continuously becoming difficult to find. In light of this situation, to produce more gold, recovery methods from refractory gold ore containing various sulfide minerals should be investigated. Generally, sulfide minerals have impeding effects on gold leaching: formation of a passive film on the gold surface, high consumption of chemicalssuch as cyanide and oxygenduring leaching, reduction of gold cyanide by sulfide ions, etc. (Senanayake, 2008). Therefore, sulfides must be properly treated for better gold recovery. Pre-oxidation of sulfide minerals by injecting pure oxygen can decrease the impeding effects in gold leaching. Prior to cyanidation, sulfide minerals can be oxidized to metal hydroxide and sulfate form, which consume negligible cyanide in the following cyanidation circuit (Bodnaras et al., 1993). Moreover, gold cyanidation can be enhanced by increasing concentration of the dissolved oxygen (DO). In general, the optimum concentration ratio of [CN-]/[O2] is calculated as 6, but it goes higher in the real system (Marsden &House, 2006), which means that the reaction is typically controlled by DO concentration."

THE gold deposits of the Pioneer and Bralorne mines, in the Bridge River district of British Columbia, are closely associated with a long, narrow intrusive body of extremely variable composition, outcropping on the northeast side of Cadwallader creek and lying almost entirely within the property boundaries of the two companies. Other masses of the same type of intrusive rock are found in the district, more or less along the line of the main axis of the Pioneer-Bralorne in trusive, and have associated with them variable amounts of gold-quartz mineralization (Figure 1). The ore deposits of the district have been the subject of investigation by officers of the Geological Survey of Canada at various times during the past 25 years, and articles on the geology and mines of the district have been published by various individuals in technical journals. "A survey of our knowledge in the field of rock mechanics is presented from the viewpoint of applications in the mining industry. Aspects of rock mechanics of special interest to the industry are enlarged upon, with emphasis on the avoidance of over-generalization. The relationship between fundamental and practical rock mechanics is discussed, and the need for cooperation between the university and industry to further our knowledge of -useful rock mechanics is emphasized. An attempt has been made to establish the scope of rock mechanics, as applied to problems in the mining industry. This is brought about by projecting rock mechanics as a tool to be intelligently used rather than magic, capable of producing ""miracles."" Continued education is important for individuals engaged in the application 0f rock mechanics in the mining industry. The scope of this education is discussed from a viewpoint of better communication between industry and the education and/or re-search establishments engaged in this work.Finally, the dangers of over-emphasis on rock mechanics are mentioned, but a justification of the in-vestment in rock mechanics programs in mines is also presented."

Cerro Verde is one of several large porphyry-type copper deposits in Southern Peru. The copper occurs as primary sulphides, with a significant oxide capping. The exploitation of the deposit has been correspondingly divided into two stages, the first consisting of copper production from oxides, and the second from sulphides. Minero Peru successfully started the Stage I plant in June of 1977 with the first production of electrowon copper cathodes. This paper is essentially devoted to a description of the Stage I process, which can be summarized as follows: Ore is trucked to the primary crusher, where it is crushed to 225 mm and conveyed to a coarse ore stockpile. Ore withdrawn from the stockpile is secondary crushed to 65 mm, conveyed to a truck loadout bin, loaded into trucks and driven to the leaching pads. Ore is placed on the pads in lifts and sprayed with sulphuric acid solution to dissolve the copper. Copper-bearing solution forms a pond behind a dam at the lower end of each pad and is pumped from there to the solvent extraction plant. Copper is extracted from the leach solution into an organic phase and is then stripped from the organic phase to form a purified concentrated copper solution suitable for feed to electrowinning. In electrowinning, the copper is finally recovered as cathodes suitable for sale as refined copper.

"Dust samplers are based on different principles. The konimeter is based on the number of particles counted; mining applications are based on routine sampling; and the photometrical evaluation of samples is used after the pre-separation of particles above 5 micron by the mining konimeter. In special cases, the Draeger sampler is used for quantitative analysis. General trends are toward larger samples, concentration on a weight basis, fractionation into size groups by different techniques and an analysis of composition. Standards or TLVs already exist in all industries. Surface industries base their criteria on concentrations and quartz contents in particles below 5 micron. The mining industry uses the tyndalloscope routinely to determine concentrations; concurrent] y, the rock content, as deter-mined by ashing samples, is obtained by konimeter.Threshold limits are related to the rock content in respirable fractions and tyndallometrically determined concentrations. The TL Vs are based empirically on Landwehr's ""dust values,"" as agreed upon with the Mines Inspectorates. Recently, and in accurate sampling, dust samplers have been used that count the dust in two fractions -above and below 5 microns. Mineral composition is determined either for all minerais or just for quartz. In assessing the dust hazard by Landwehr's ""dust values,"" all minerais are taken into consideration; in coal dust sampling, however, only the quartz content is taken into account. Efforts are now being made to co-ordinate the different assessment methods, arriving at uniform MAC values in agreement with those of other countries."

"Atlas Copco is introducing a new patented method for full-face boring. This paper presents the basic principles of the boring action and discusses the present experience regarding performance and costs. The Atlas Copco ""Full-facers"" are designed for hard-rock applications, although they are successfully boring in soft ground without major changes. The unique patented boring principle referred to as the 'Undercutting Method' permits these machines to bore, economically, in harder ground than machines based on the 'crushing principle'. This is mainly due to considerably lower cutting-tool costs, as the tungsten carbide tips only are in contact with one-third of the bored volume. The remaining rock is 'undercut' and peels off from a slight back pressure.The undercutting method also permits boring of non-circular headings and Atlas Copco has already manufactured two machines for rectangular drifts. This concept could revolutionize development work in mines employing trackless equipment."

THIS PAPER will review Canada's fossil fuel situation as we understand it today and indicate some of the options available to meet our energy requirements during the next 15 years. It would therefore be helpful to examine Canada's total energy requirements and discuss the un certainties of the data base on which we must base future energy investment decisions. On the world scene, Canada is at the top of the energy-consuming nations, using about 49 bbls of oil equivalent per caput/ year. This appears to be slightly ahead of the U.S. and of course much higher than that of many countries. It is generally accepted that there is a more or less direct relationship between energy consumption and material standard of living. However , as we know, Canada, when compared with other industrialized countries on a GNP, an individual-income or some other standard basis, is lower in the list. This situation may be explained by our more severe climate and a relatively small population distributed over a land mass second only to that of the Soviet Union.

Recent drilling programs have shown that the in-situ coal resources of Nova Scotia are very substantial. The grand totals of the measured, indicated and inferred categories amount to 232 m, 646m and 993 m tons, respectively. This vast quantity of coal occurs essentially in five main fields: Sydney, Mabou, Port Hood, Pictou and Springhill. The largest resources (84% of the total) occur in the submarine area of the Sydney coalfield. With a 65% recovery rate, there are at present 150m tons of proven, recoverable coal in Nova Scotia. At a predicted maximum annual production of 5 m tons, this amount equals a lifespan of 30 years. However, additional drilling, particularly in the Sydney offshore area, holds promise of increasing the recoverable reserve tonnage to at least 350 m tons. This figure may be compared with the 484 m tons production obtained during 191 years of mining (from 1785-1976). The geological appraisal of the remaining coal resources in the five fields mentioned is presented in three-dimensional diagrams, per individual seam and corresponding reserve area. In addition, the submarine extensions of the Sydney and Mabou coalfields are discussed in light of results obtained from off shore oil exploration wells. The terminology and standards of coal resource calculations are pointed out, and the phenomenon of seam splitting and its prediction from geological data is illustrated. The availability in Nova Scotia of either thermal or metallurgical coal is considered in relation to rank and sulphur content. This paper was presented in June 1977 at the 90th Annual Meeting of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia. The coal resource estimates, however, have been updated to include the results obtained with the offshore drilling in the Sydney Coalfield to November 1977.

"The Meuse/Haute-Marne Underground Research Laboratory (URL) is located on the eastern boundary of the Paris Basin. The URL started to be built in 2000 (shaft sinking operations) in the framework of ANDRA’s (French national radioactive waste management agency) research program aimed at determining the feasibility of a reversible deep geological disposal of high-level and intermediate-level long-lived radioactive waste (HLW, IL-LLW). Its underground drifts are used to study the Callovo- Oxfordian claystone layer between 420 m and 550 m in depth.The ongoing research program (started in 2006) following the “Technology Readiness Level” (TRL) Scale is more dedicated to technologies improvement and demonstration issue of the different disposal components, even if characterization and monitoring studies are still ongoing.In rock mechanics, at the main level of the URL (located at 490 m), construction and evolution of disposal cells of different size are studied for HLW and IL-LLW packages. A step by step approach, started in 2006, is carried out based on comparison of HM behavior of parallel drifts excavated/supported by different construction methods. These various configurations give insight of the influence of construction method on the EDZ extent and evolution and on the progressive loading of the support, which are key issues to design the Cigéo disposal drifts and excavations.The concept of disposal cells studied for HLW consists in horizontal steel lined micro-tunnels 80 m long and 70 cm in diameter. Several campaigns of tests have been carried out since 2009 in order to demonstrate the feasibility of excavating such micro-tunnels and study their behavior under different conditions (with and without back filling the annular gap between the rock and the casing, watertight or not casing). A full scale demonstrator representative of the benchmark concept has also been excavated, to study its behaviour under thermal loading with heat produced by electrical heaters."

"While the mine developer looks for bigger and better orebodies in countries offering lower risks to development capital, the opera-tor of existing mines is looking for bigger and better ways to use his existing resources. Mining operations today utilize a variety of stand-alone systems for planning and managing their operations. In both small and large mines, payroll, accounting, inventory, planning, and engineering requirements are met using a combination of manual and computer-based systems.Technical advances and new enabling technologies are changing how mines are doing business. PC-based systems are allowing small operations to join the larger mines in using advanced computer-based systems. Advanced monitors are being used in maintenance to track, predict and correct the health of production equipment. Production monitoring systems are used to measure the performance of operating equipment and personnel in real time. This detailed information on how much, where, when, and by whom is being used for proactive management and planning. Ultimately, this information can be used to optimize and control the machines’ activities, eventually leading to robotic and autonomous operation of mining equipment.As the use of technology increases in mining, specific information objectives are being met but other problems are being created. The life cycle of technology is small, and as current systems are replaced by newer ones, integration problems and additional end-user training are created. In addition, onboard monitoring systems can create large volumes of data, data which are frequently archived without being analyzed. Mine operators are also duplicating efforts applying new technologies in an effort to be more competitive, but in doing so are creating interfaces which are only compatible with their own facilities. As system development moved from the centralized mainframe computer to the PC environment, the fragmentation of these systems became more pronounced.To efficiently continue in adapting and utilizing advancing technology, the mining industry needs to develop a system architecture that readily integrates as many sub-systems as possible. This will provide a framework for existing system integration and design guide-lines for future development. The Total Mining System (TMS) concept will allow a network of stand-alone functional modules to be readily integrated with minimal effort. This paper will discuss some of the current technologies cur-rently in use in some surface mine operations.In addition, a description of the information system and communications requirements that will be needed to integrate these components in the future, will be discussed."

THE copper-nickel sulfide ore deposits of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited contain the minerals pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In the extraction of the nickel, copper, and iron, much of the processing involves oxidation of the metals as well as sulfur. Roasting plays a predominant role at several stages in the operations which prepare the constituent metals for refining. Copper, nickel and iron concentrates of various grades, ranging from low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite to high-grade nickel sulfide, must be partially or completely oxidized. Figure 1 shows the main points at which roasting is conducted at INCO. Roasting experience at INCO dates back to the time when lump ore was partially roasted in heaps. It has progressed through single hearth roasters, sinter machines, multiple-hearth roasters, flash roasters, and more recently has centered on the development and utilization of fluid bed roasters. EARLY in 1951, Falconbridge undertook a research program aimed at the development of a sulphate roasting process for the recovery of the non-ferrous rnetals from the nickeliferous pyrrhotite fraction of Falconbridge ore, in order to reduce the tonnage of iron entering the srnelter. Such a method, it was hoped, would permit a high recovery of the nickel from pyrrhotite otherwise entering the smelter feed, thus not only raising the grade of the latter and reducing its iron content, but also providing an iron oxide residue useful as a source of by-product iron ore. At an early stage in the exploratory laboratory test work it was found that the degree to which the nickel could be solubilized by the sulphating roasting treatment was limited by particle size and the ex-tent to which the pyrrhotite concentrates were freed of the nickel occurring as physically separable pentlandite, a mineral relatively difficult to roast. "Regenerative and recuperative burner systems require advanced combustion techniques to minimize NOx emissions. Various methods of pollutant minimization and furnace design considerations are described. Cited examples are a large high temperature furnace and a small Zinc vaporizing furnace. The concept of total carbon footprint is introduced. The application of Biomass combustion as an effective method of cost and green-house gas (GHG) reduction is discussed. Practical considerations of scale, location and process limitations are discussed. Two examples of biomass fired equipment are cited. Ideal sites have large biomass resources available locally. Processed biomass fuels will be an important substitute for fossil fuel. INTRODUCTIONIn 1992, I presented a paper entitled Combustion Strategies In The Modern Industrial Environment (1992). At that time an abundant supply of cheap fossil fuel made many of the measures I talked about difficult to justify for anything but new equipment.Since 1992 we, as a society, have demonstrated an ability to accelerate the pace of industrial and societal change. The term industrial revolution applied to this age of incessant change is completely meaningless, implying a discrete moment in historical time. What our society has built is a system capable of unfettered, continuous and accelerating technological change. With this change comes an increasing demand for energy and materials.This year is the anniversary of the Titanic disaster, a moment in time when technological certainty met the caprice of nature and gave us a brutal reminder of what can happen to us if we underestimate that power (Mowbray, 1912). In the intervening interval we have regained the technological arrogance that was lost in 1912 bringing us back to the problems of climate change and the need for sustainable industrial activities.We use advanced mathematics to describe many complex systems, sometimes with disastrous results. For example there has been a recent attempt to model the global economy as a completely deterministic system. This premise is flawed at its foundation as human nature and emotion are indeterminate constants in the equations, yielding probabilistic solutions at best. As engineers we are all familiar with stiff problems. The solution to such a problem is meaningless and we have all had the misfortune to live through and rue the effects of that miscalculation over the last few years."

"THE property of Red Mountain Mines Limited is located 11/2 miles north and west of the town of Rossland, in southern British Columbia. The mine is situated on the flank of Red mountain, famous in pioneer days as the site of a number of profitable gold-copper producers. Mining and milling commenced in May, 1966, and by the first of July the concentrator was treating close to its average design capacity of 400 tons per day. The following description of the property and its operations is divided into three parts, dealing respectively with geology, mining and milling.GeologyAll the known ore reserves of Red Mountain Mines occur on the Coxey claim, on the west slope of Red mountain. Although there are indications of molybdenite mineralization elsewhere on the Company's property, these have not been developed.The Coxey and adjoining areas are underlain by the Mount Roberts formation of the Rossland volca-nics. This formation consists of an interbedded series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks, mostly brecciated and silicified near the ore zone, and all intruded by igneous rocks which occur in various forms, and vary in composition from basic to acid. The country rock in the vicinity of the mineralization seems to be mostly a volcanic, approximately andesitic in composition, and possibly a surface flow. There is much banding, some of which is undoubtedly due to tuff and agglomerate layers, and some to narrow, siliceous, sedimentary horizons such as the surface exposure of the main ""A"" orebody, much of which was a thin capping of greyish banded rock that looked like quartzite. The drill holes also intersected occasional layers of black, argillaceous quartzite, sometimes altered to a greenish colour. The whole assemblage has been silicified with varied intensity, sometimes to such an extent as to have obscured or obliterated the original characteristics. The mineralized zone has also been strongly brecciated, the fragments varying in size from less than an inch up to large masses, best described as a mega-breccia. Anomalous results obtained in drilling, such as sedimentary sections that do not appear in adjoining holes, may sometimes be due to the presence of these large blocks, no longer in their original position. The whole volcanic unit is thus very complex and confusing. For practical purposes, the ore may be said to occur in a greenstone formation with minor sedimentary interbeds and considerable later igneous material."

Mine workings are progressing to greater depths as shallow mineral resources are being depleted, and civil engineering projects are nowadays being developed at substantial depths. The threat to tunnel stability posed by rockburst events has increased as a result of these high stress environments. Rockbursts are violent events capable of mobilizing large volumes of rock. In addition to the threat to safety and equipment, rockburst damage can significantly impact on operations, and cause loss of mining production, often the largest cost component of such events. Rehabilitation of such damage requires significant effort and resources. Tunnel walls and roof are usually well supported, but the installation of rock support in the floor is uncommon, particularly in mining environments. In the absence of rock support, floors of the excavations are vulnerable to rockburst damage. New concepts for containing damage of excavation floors by dissipation of the large transient forces using simple techniques or preselected and designed elements of sacrificial floor systems are presented. Two approaches to calculate the demand are presented: estimating load demand by assuming displacement levels and a response modification factor; and using a limit displacement approach to calculate elastic stiffness of the selected elements of the sacrificial support system. The proposed conceptual support systems have the capability of dissipating rockburst energy while retaining sufficient serviceability. It is considered that the concepts presented, for discussion, in this paper are logical and developable into practicable and economic solutions for tunnel floor support in rockbursting environments.

"As the influence of governments has become more widely felt, the use of research techniques to analyze policy has increased. Mineral economics, as one of the foundations of mineral policy research, has grown accordingly. Policy research and analysis has been carried out within governments, university departments and the private sector. Each of these institutional environments has characteristics which influence the topics of study, the approach, the methodology and the output of the research. A brief survey of recent research activities provides illustrations of trends and developments occurring within this organizational framework.A radically different organization, the independent research institute, has begun to make an impact on policy research in recent years, and will have an increasing importance in the future. Combining certain features of the traditional research organizations, it nevertheless has important differences which are essential to its effective functioning. An overview of the formation, goals, organization and operation of one such institute is presented."

The objective s of this paper are: (a ) to examine and discuss the burdens we place on our extractive industry; (b) to compare the levels of taxation in Canada with those in other countries; and ( c) to suggest certain broad parameters within which our taxation policies may be made more rational and stable. Among the burdens identified are taxation, the ownership and use of our resources, environmental issues and the rather emotional issue of so-called 'super profits'. Finally, the paper will address certain broad but key areas of policy which need attention and agreement if our tax system is to be made more rational. Such areas include: whether and if so why the extractive industry should be given incentives;. what circumstances, if any, justify a 'higher' than normal' level of taxation, and, ?if the concept of economic rents is a justifiable one, how might a basis for them be established which recognizes the fluctuating value of much of the industry's output. Note: The paper was written before the 1977 Federal and Provincial budgets were presented. Consequently, the paper does not reflect any changes proposed in these budgets.
