A study was made on six collapses that occurred during large-diameter tunnelling through weak sedimentary rocks and soil using SES methods in three stages?top heading, bench and invert. The collapsed lengths are between 20 m and 277 m. The collapses were re-mined using essentially the same tunnel-ling method with larger excavation profiles to accommodate the designed remedial measures consisting of ground treatment, pre-support and stronger initial support/outer lining required to carry higher ground loads acting in the collapsed lengths. The paper presents information on the collapses and the design and execution of the remedial measures.

"Grinding mills are infamous for their extremely low energy efficiency. This paper reports the results of an investigation that characterized energy outputs in industrial grinding mill circuits. It identifies and discusses the potential for recovering energy from grinding circuits. Agnico-Eagle Goldex Division, Mine Canadian Malartic, and New Gold New Afton Mine participated in the study by providing operating data for three semi-autogenous grinding mills and four ball mills. Results showed that on average, 79% of the supplied electrical energy was converted to heat absorbed by the slurry, 8% was lost through the drive system, and approximately 2% was transmitted to the ambient air. Only 9% of the input energy was actually used for grinding. The remaining 91%—wasted as heat—could potentially be recovered using suitable technologies or integrated energy management systems. Located in the north-west of Kazakhstan is a world-class podiform chromite deposit. Donskoy mining and beneficiation complex (DGOK), a branch of Kazchrome TNC, which is a subsidiary of the Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) operates two underground mines in this area, one of which is the ‘10th Anniversary of Kazakhstan Independence’ (DNK) mine.The mine currently applies the gravity caving mining method, producing 1.8 Mt/a of ore utilising a slusher layout and rail transport to the hoisting shafts. The deeper zones form the largest mineral resources at the DNK mine and are planned to be developed in the next several years. At this depth, the generally poor ground conditions, combined with the high in situ stress state will potentially lead to extremely challenging mining conditions.This paper describes a technical study undertaken by SRK to determine the possibility of increasing the maximum production rate from the currently envisaged 6.0 Mt/a to 7.2 Mt/a, and to reduce the time taken to steady state production.Based on a newly created 3D model, the inclined caving method was proposed for the largest orebodies. This method, presently not implemented at any operating mine, although planned for two other projects, was deemed very suitable to deal with the weak rock mass characteristics and the plunging morphology of the mineralisation.Dassault Syst&#232;mes’ GEOVIA’s Footprint Finder software (a module of GEOVIA’s PCBC™) was used to determine the caving zones and production schedules. The total mine design was completed in Deswik software, and resulting schedules combined in Excel.In addition to the use of an inclined caving method, several other suggestions were made to increase the productivity of the mine, such as the application of a conveyor belt system transporting multiple material types, teleremote technologies and the application of thin sprayed liners to reduce the swelling of the rock mass.CITATION:Fuykschot, J J and Loewen, S M, 2016. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated prospects and mineralized areas in and adjacent to the Indian Pass and Picacho Peak study areas in 1983 and 1984. The Indian Pass study area contains 33,640 acres and the Picacho Peak study area contains 5,450 acres. The study areas are located in the southeast corner of California and are underlain by Precambrian gneiss, Pre-Tertiary metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks, and Tertiary volcanic and non-marine clastic rocks. Low-grade gold-silver resources may be present in hydrothermally altered gneiss in the upper plate and altered schist in the lower plate of the Chocolate Mountain thrust fault. The thrust fault is exposed in the study areas for about 3.5 miles west and 5 miles east of Indian Pass. Mineralized zones in the thrust plates were not discovered until 1983. Earlier prospecting explored areas containing minor copper carbonate occurrences in schist and sedimentary and volcanic rocks that are younger than the thrust. Twenty-three mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences inside the study areas and fourteen outs; de were examined for this study. These surficial copper occurrences have been prospected extensively in the study areas; large areas have been scraped, pitted, and trenched by bulldozers. However, they appear to be of limited economic significance. Slightly mineralized zones are in the northwest part of the Indian Pass study area where granite contacts sedimentary and volcanic rocks.

Despite the wide interest in titanium and its compounds, no heat and free-energy-of-formation values for titanates (that is, compounds formed from titania and other metal oxides) have been available heretofore except for ilmenite (FeTi03). Such data are needed for understanding and developing processes for producing titania and titanium tetrachloride from ores (and possibly slags) and in connection with ceramic usage of titania. This paper reports experimental measurements of the heats of formation at ordinary temperature of 11 titanates-ilmenite, perovskite, barium metatinate, strontium metatitanate, barium-strontium metatitanate, barium orthotitanate, strontium orthotitanate, barium-strontium othotitanate, geikielite, magnesium-titanium spinel, and magnesium dititanate. The experimental method was solution calorimetry. The solution calorimeter was operated at 73.7°C. and used a strong hydrofluoric-hydrochloric acid mixture as the calorimetric fluid and reaction medium.

In 1987 and 1988, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 31,400-acre Muddy Creek Wilderness Study Area (UT-060-007). The investigation was requested by the Bureau of Land Management and authorized by the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (Public Law 94-579). The study area is located in Emery County, Utah, about 50 air-miles southwest of Green River, Utah. The wilderness study area is in the San Rafael Swell region of the Colorado Plateau Physiographic Province. Rocks in the area consist of gently dipping sedimentary strata of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic age.

Cable bolting is a relatively new strata reinforcement technique that has been used successfully in Australia and the United Kingdom. Jim Walter Resources, Inc. has examined the principles and can visualize its useful application in many areas, such as: a) Longwall pull-out areas, b) Roadway junctions, particularly those involving yield pillars, c) Rib reinforcement, and d) Possible replacement of cribbing in roadways, especially longwall tailgates. This paper describes the conditions which led to cable bolt testing, the results of tests conducted to date, and conclusions about the direction that Jim Walter Resources, Inc. is heading as far as testing and potential applications are concerned.

Remote methane detection State and federal regulations require frequent measurements to verify that safe methane levels are maintained in underground coal mines. Ventilation control is the primary means of maintaining safe methane levels. In the immediate face area, where the highest methane levels occur, methane measurements are required every 20 minutes during active mining. To perform these measurements, temporary roof supports must be erected. This allows a miner to reach the face. There a hand-held methanometer is used to make the measurements. This procedure is time consuming and potentially hazardous. To facilitate the measuring process and reduce the miner&apos;s exposure to roof falls, the US Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype optical device. It can measure methane remotely from distances up to 12 m (40 ft). The device uses two infrared signals, reflected from the coal face, rib, or roof. One signal is absorbed by the methane, the other is not. The ratio of the two signals determines the average methane concentration in the face area. The prototype detector has also been successfully tested at the Lake Lynn, PA Laboratory. Instantaneous responses were obtained for methane in the ventilation airflow and for methane layered near the roof. Conventional methanometers required from five to 25 seconds to respond to the methane in the ventilation airflow. They did not respond to methane in the roof layer. Ignition suppression system The incidence has increased of fractional spark ignition at the mine face. One reason is the advent of mechanical mining. Another is the more difficult ventilation conditions associated with deeper and more extensive underground workings. To cope with the problem of frictional ignition, the Bureau of Mines initiated research to develop a system that would provide rapid detection of incipient methane-air ignition. Then, rapid dispersion of a quenching agent would ensure that the methane flame was extinguished while it was still relatively small. This concept was successfully demonstrated by suppressing explosions in the Bureau&apos;s Bruceton, PA experimental mine. But the bulkiness of the early storage-dispersal system proved impractical to retrofit onto face equipment. In a cooperative effort by the Bureau and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a more compact system has been developed and is being tested. The Pilgrim mine, operated by the Pioneer Gold Mining Co., is 9-1/2 miles west of Chloride in the Pilgrim mining district on the eastern slope of the Black Mountains, or River Range, Mohave County, Ariz. In March 1937, 100 tons of gold ore per day were being mined and milled at the property by a total force of 5i men. Climatic conditions allow year-round operations. Due to present activity in the county there is an ample supply of labor for the requirements of the mine. The Pilgrim is the only producing property within s radius of 6 miles; recently, however, the South Pilgrim Mining Co. has launched a development campaign on claims that adjoin the Pioneer Co. property to the south.

Steel mill electric arc furnace dust is a RCRA listed hazardous waste and its treatment and/or disposal are regulated by a complex set of rules. These regulations were originally established to encourage recovery and recycling of valuable components. For EAF dust, the more valuable constituents include zinc, lead, cadmium and iron. In fact, current trends are in the opposite direction, as the regulations have complicated the ability to commercialize new treatment technologies and created substantial roadblocks and liabilities for processors. As a result, almost half of the EAF dust generated in 1997 will be landfilled. The problems are compounded by difficult processing requirements, less than sterling examples of technology development and mechanical and operating problems. This paper explores some options to simplify the processing requirements and thereby easing difficulties in commercializing new technologies and expediting the recycling of recovered metals. Dust processing usually includes a simple step followed by two complicated steps. The simple step is fuming of heavy metals away from iron and other residues. The complex steps are (1) separating and purifying the heavy metals and (2) upgrading the iron residue. The first complex step can be simplified by producing an intermediate product that is amenable to processing by zinc refiners. This route benefits from the currently underutilized (by dust processors) resource offered by refiners, who have experience in and existing processes for separation and purification of zinc-based heavy metals. Various processes and their associated product options are reviewed and compared. Future directions for dust processing developments are suggested.

A comparison of 40 statically and dynamically load tested piles was performed to evaluate the variation between testing methods. This evaluation indicated an agreement of 10% to 15% could be obtained when the available static resistance is fully mobilized by both methods and when time dependent capacity changes are minimized. Dynamic pile testing recommendations for minimum induced impact force, ram weight to pile weight ratio, and considerations for time dependent capacity changes are presented.

Legislation introduced for Queensland and New South Wales Coal mines provides different levels of prescription regarding specification of mine seals û generally in relation to capacity to withstand overpressure. In Queensland, the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation (2001), Section 341 (d) places a further onus on the statutory ventilation officer to æensure all ventilation control devices at the mine are properly constructed and maintainedÆ and that the ventilation officer æmust ensure a ventilation control device mentioned in the regulation à and installed at the mine meets the design criteria statedÆ for the ætype of deviceÆ. Based on the experience of the author, it appears that risk management and life cycle approach to seals has not been adopted to the same extent as for other aspects of operations. Further, because of the number of disciplines and personnel involved that may influence various factors affecting seal integrity, the opportunity for oversight or unclear allocation of responsibility is considerable. While suppliers can provide explosion or design rated seals, this should only be a starting point for application of the product in a coal mine. Application is often considered by mine planning staff (taking into consideration mine environment parameters such as water, control of gas, spontaneous combustion risk, etc) in conjunction with the colliery ventilation officer, and then construction completed by contractors under supervision of operational staff. After construction, seals often are managed by operational personnel with input from the ventilation officer. Input of the geotechnical engineer into pillar design, roadway opening size, ground support specification and most stable seal location is also required. The need for a customised design approach for each seal site is proposed in order to take into account the many and variable factors that may influence a site so that improved seal performance reliability and predictability can be developed. A program of quantitative as well as qualitative monitoring of performance and triggers for rectification or maintenance action is required, and would provide support to the aforementioned proposal. Many mines rely on visual/audible inspection and periodic bag sampling as the primary means of assessment. Other significant factors such as seal material properties, rib degradation, convergence, floor heave, effects of water on both structural integrity of the seal as well as the air tightness of the seal do not generally receive the same level of attention. Based on the above observations, the author has compiled a reference checklist in regard to the above matters, including aspects of and approaches to mine and pillar design, geotechnical modelling and data collection, civil engineering design, site evaluation and practical options available.

Precrusher stockpiles are designed principally as buffers to decouple the mining and processing operations. They are usually paddock dumped or dumped over a face to form fingers by dumping haul truckloads and reclaimed by front-end loader in an ad hoc manner. In addition, they are often not built and reclaimed to completion but continually added to and extracted from. While this design suits the mining process and is operationally simple, there can be little confidence in the grade of the ore that is fed to the crusher. This makes short-term grade control difficult and reconciliation back to the mine face imprecise. Well-designed and operated precrusher stockpiles can overcome these deficiencies.The different types of grade variability in mining are reviewed in this paper. The role of precrusher stockpiles in reducing short-term variability is discussed and their ineffectiveness in addressing long-term variability is highlighted. Their role in removing the serial correlation of the extracted ore is explained.Precrusher stockpiles carry out the four, at times competing, objectives of storing, buffering, blending and grade separation. Their actual design and operation result from a compromise between these four competing roles. These roles are explained in detail along with the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of precrusher stockpiles. The recommended blended-in blended-out stockpile (BIBO) design is discussed in detail. Matched pairs of BIBO stockpiles of limited tonnage built and reclaimed to completion retain the best knowledge of grade and facilitate the reconciliation process.Simulation studies have been carried out on BIBO stockpiles to understand the blending opportunities of the different options for building and reclaiming, and to identify the methods that achieve maximum blending. It was found that laying down rows in one direction and reclaiming across these rows gives the best blending. Matching the width of the reclaim face with the daily crushing requirements is also important. The length of the rows, and building in either one or two layers has little effect on the extent of blending.Appropriate design can provide a reasonable compromise between the four objectives.CITATION:Jupp, K, Howard, T J and Everett, J E, 2013. Standard statistical methods were used to estimate the probability of occurrence of major disasters, and to examine the relationship of disasters to injury statistics published annually.

The selective placement of coal stripmine overburden is examined. Physical and chemical properties of spoil detrimental to revegetation and groundwater are detailed. The United States is divided into regions or similar problems. Five mining methods already used in the industry, that are capable of selectively handling waste are examined in detail. Technical and economic comparisons are made for the systems when applied to realistic mine settings. The same analysis is conducted for five novel methods capable of selectively handling waste. Comparisons are made between novel and existing methods. Suggestions for new and modified equipment are outlined. Recommendations for further research are provided. This volume contains all Appendices to the report.

Between the early 20th Century and the present, the production of mined copper ore has increased from tens of millions of tonnes per annum to several billion tonnes per annum, an unprecedented increase. Contemporaneously, the average grade of mined copper ore has declined from over 2% to approximately 0.5%. Again, in parallel, the price of copper has increased dramatically to reflect the increasing cost of extracting and beneficiating such large amounts of low-grade ore. Within the period the copper price however exhibited several periods of intense volatility, driven by interrelationships between demand and supply, themselves strongly driven by periodic industry developments in the fields of exploration, ore extraction, mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. It is notable that these periods of intense innovation exhibit a strong correlation to preceding periods of price, demand or production volatility. This paper examines key trends in each theme between 1900 and 2018 and draws strong conclusions as to the interrelationship between them. INTRODUCTION The production of copper metal has increased from around half a million tonnes per annum to over fifteen million tonnes per annum over the course of the 20th Century. Contemporaneously, the average grade of copper ore mined has declined from over 2% to approximately 0.5% copper by weight. As a result, the volume of Run-of-Mine (ROM) copper ore required has increased from around ten million tonnes per annum to over a five billion tonnes per annum over the period, an unprecedented increase. The adage is that demand drives supply, that prices rise in times of high demand and/or short supply, and that prices fall when supply catches up with demand. The market sellers in biblical times knew this well; mediaeval market sellers equally. Dutch tulip sellers in the 1600’s experienced both in extremis — much to their dismay — and the great industrialists and early capitalists of the industrial revolution knew this also. Mining recently went through a cycle where investors and producers both believed that the “old” rules did not apply any more and that the industry was in a “supercycle” where prices would continue to rise on the back of increasing demand. However, as the GFC of 2008–2011 showed, this was not to be. Another adage says that we constantly innovate to lower costs of production. Is this true? Do we only innovate to lower cost? Has the true cost of producing copper actually gone down over the century? Or are there other balancing forces at play? Herb Kellogg, in his Centenary address to the American Institute of Mining Engineers (now SME), categorized two types of innovation: ‘Bigger and Better’, and ‘New Process’ (Kellogg, 1970). ‘Bigger and Better’ allows increased production at presumably lower cost; ‘New Process’ supports the same result at presumably the same scale, but at significantly enhanced efficiencies and (therefore) lower cost. It is suggested that both types of innovation are constantly and interchangeably required to achieve the kind of scale-up, at achievable operating and capital cost that the industry has achieved over the period. What can be shown, over this last Century and a bit, is that supply and demand are indeed inextricably linked, price and demand are linked, but so are price and cost of production. And the innovation required to sustain that weaves in between them all, cost-effectively increasing production capacity or lowering the cost of production at the same throughput, and sometimes both.

Electron microbeam analysis of metallurgical samples covers abroad field and has applications in the areas of minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, physical metallurgy and corrosion. Some idea of the possibilities of microbeam techniques can be illustrated by examining the following example of a run of mine gold ore sample. Milling and bulk chemical analysis of the ore will provide major and minor element analysis as well as the gold grade. More detailed chemistry can also reveal the presence of trace elements that may be advantageous or deleterious to downstream processing. Electron microbeam analysis can provide additional information in the form of size, liberation, association and composition of the gold, the percentage of refractory gold, the size, liberation, association and composition of enclosing sulphide or arsenide phases and the levels and association of the trace elements that may affect processing. In most cases electron microbeam analysis complements bulk chemistry, and does not replace it. Both techniques should be used in parallel for maximum effect. This paper touches on the origin and history of electron microbeam techniques, as well as the theory behind microbeam analysis and processing. The more common types of instruments and their applications will also be dealt with briefly.

Silver tarnishes readily in common atmospheres and is accelerated in humid atmospheres. Tarnish is the formation of silver sulphide on the surface of silver when it is exposed to a wide range of sulphur-containing atmospheres. Tarnish is unattractive and highly undesirable, and can be removed either with a silver polish or a chemical dip. Dips are generally only recommended when heavy black tarnish cannot be removed with a polish, and care must be taken during cleaning because these can contain aggressive chemicals and give off hazardous and unpleasant smelling fumes. Polishes work best for large areas of plain undecorated silver, and form part of a regular cleaning programme. Some polishes contain chemicals that inhibit tarnishing, but these generally only have a short life. Several methods have been developed to reduce tarnish formation on Silver; these include alloying, surface treatment, and coatings. The authors evaluated a range of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surface treatments and coatings in earlier research. Four treatments/coatings increased the time to noticeable tarnish by more than ten fold, and the results were reported at the International Corrosion Congress (ICC) in 2005, and at the Mint Directors Conference (MDC) in 2006. SAM treatment using 95% 1-hexadecanethiol (C16H34S) was found to give good anti-tarnish performance and showed potential for the commercial treatment of Sterling silver. Therefore research was performed to optimise the methods of application of this type of coating to provide an easier, faster, and more-user friendly technique to provide an anti-tarnish treatment.
