Multiple agencies in Southern California are retrofitting and upgrading their levees to catch up with ever-advancing urbanization affecting the requirements for existing channels and levees in this seismically active zone. Pressed-in sheet piles have been specified on some of these projects to minimize noise and vibration problems associated with sheet pile installation. This paper will study three Southern California levee and sewer pipeline retrofit projects that utilized pressed-in sheet piles in hard soil conditions with N-values higher than 50. BACKGROUND Southern California is home to numerous drainage channels fortified with earthen levees. In spite of the region’s semi-arid climate with varying annual precipitation from year to year, winter storms can bring in heavy and continuous rainfall to the area which overwhelms the levees’ capacities at times. Some levees are running through densely populated areas with homes and other sensitive structures such as underground utilities and bridge piers. Conventional sheet pile driving utilizes either percussive or vibratory pile driving methods, both of which generate high levels of noise and vibration, causing nuisance and potential damage to nearby structures. On the other hand, the press-in piling method utilizes a hydraulic force to push piles into the ground, thus practically eliminating the noise and vibration issue. Although there are types of press-in piling systems mounted on tall leaders on large crawler-base machines, they are less frequently used due to its much larger size and more limited drivability than the type discussed hereunder. The other type of press-in machine sits on top of already installed piles and is anchored with its own weight and additional counter weight when starting off as shown in Figure 1. Once the first few piles are pressed in, the equipment grips on top of the installed piles and moves forward on its own as the pile installation progresses. See Figure 2. This method does not use a vibratory or percussive force to install piles.

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and other near infrared (NIR) tools have been used in the bauxite industry for many years. Infrared spectroscopy exploits the differences in chemical composition and lattice structure to produce a characteristic response. Spectral devices, such as those from ASD Inc and the HyLoggerTM, provide qualitative mineralogical data targeted towards hydrated minerals detected in the near and short wave infrared region. The FTIR spectrum extends into the mid and thermal infrared range and can therefore respond to the presence of silicates and oxides, in addition to hydrates and carbonates.The key to successful utilisation of infrared spectra, however, is the interpretation methodology. In this study, FTIR spectra were calibrated against quantitative X-ray diffraction data for the determination of the mineralogy of iron ore. A full pattern profiling machine learning technique was utilised for the calibration, and the assessment of the regressions determined from an independent validation set. The abundance of key minerals – hematite, goethite, kaolinite and quartz – were determined and the results correlated against X-ray fluorescence assays and loss on ignition data. The results of the study indicate that spectral techniques using a full-pattern profiling machine learning approach and artificial neural networks can be used successfully to obtain objective and quantitative mineralogical data to support field observations and analytical results for iron ore resource modelling. The Federal Government's White Paper on Tax Reform received further major criticism in the reports of the Committees of the House of Commons and the Senate, which recently completed a lengthy review including public hearings of the government's proposals. These reports both criticized the emphasis placed by the White Paper on its concept of tax equity rather than on a system which would promote economic growth. However, the Finance Committee of the House of Commons was prepared to accept, with modifications, a number of the White Paper's key reform proposals. The Senate Finance Committee was more critical of the basic thrust of the tax reform program and recommended that a modification of the existing tax system would be more appropriate to Canada's needs. Both Committees re-commended a more favourable treatment of mining income than that originally proposed in the White Paper, and to some extent both Committees suggested proposals that were even more favourable to the industry than those set out in Finance Minister Benson's amended proposals made in August of this year. This article out-lines the principal recommendations and comments in the reports of both the House of Commons Committee and the Senate Finance Committee.

The last decade has witnessed a rapid development and application of slurry and EPB type tunnel boring machines. Both soft ground types are able to excavate tunnels in unstable ground conditions below the water table with positive face support. The most significant component of the excavation process is the cutterhead and tool con-figuration were the excavation and face support meets the geological challenge. The TBM downstream processes cannot take place unless the cutterhead and tools effectively do their job. This paper will review the current state of the art design for both slurry and EPB cutterheads and highlight both common as well as geological specific design features.

"Probably the only thing that can he said about conveyor belt scales without fear of contradiction is that they have been responsible for as much or more puzzlement, argument and frustration than almost any other piece of equipment commonly found in ore processing facilities. To be sure, there are certainly a good number of satisfactory installations, some of these having been achieved through forethought and careful consideration in the early stages of plant design, while others seem to owl their success to what seems to be little more than good luck or white witchcraft; and it might also appear that black witchcraft or other gremlins are solely responsible for the poor performance of many belt scales that enjoy well-designed installations with apparently good operating conditions.This paper is intended to acquaint users with the major operational reasons why belt scales seem so fickle (and downright ornery too), and establish some reasonably simple test standards against which the performance of scale hardware can be measured. Then it shall be shown how the design flexibility of electronic scale systems can offer particular advantages in overcoming some of these everyday problems in a practical way, and without undue inconvenience to plant operations."

The location of seismic events in mines is traditionally calculated based on the arrival times of P- and S-waves for a given velocity model (homogeneous or heterogeneous). This technique is successful when the sources of seismic events are sudden and localised (eg episodes of fracturing in solid rock or dynamic slip along a plane of weakness) and thus the radiated seismic waves have clear arrivals. In massive mining operations such as block caves, strong seismic signals often originate from the movement of loose rocks on the perimeter of the fracture zone. These signals are easily recordable but do not contain easily identifiable direct P- and S-waves, making the estimation of location through traditional methods more complicated. This problem has been approached by using a ‘brightness’ location method that estimates the origin of seismic waves based on travel times of envelopes of seismic energy. This tool is extended to be applicable in a heterogeneous velocity environment that now accounts for the presence of a cave or other strong velocity perturbations. Troy Resources acquired the Karouni Gold Project in Guyana, South America in 2014 and immediately proceeded to a Pre-Feasibility Study and project implementation. The study considered two open pit mines feeding a conventional carbon in leach (CIL) gold plant with a capacity of 1Mtpa. The study assumed a total of 2.61 million tonnes of ore with an average grade of 3.84 g/t gold with a recovered gold production of 303,526 ounces over a three year mine life.The project development involved drilling metallurgical test holes, securing second-hand major pieces of equipment where suitable, and arranging shipping to Guyana. The remote location meant logistical considerations were paramount. The plant consists of conventional two-stage crushing with single stage ball milling and a gravity circuit. The tailings circuit includes DETOX.The extremely high rainfall presented challenges with water management and the necessity to dispose of clean water to the environment. The DETOX was also mandatory due to the highly sensitive environment and past history in the area. The criticality of this meant that in the design, any cyanide in the tailings would precipitate in a plant shutdown.Lessons were learned and the project has been both profitable and successful for Troy Resources in a new operating location. In addition, the project has created jobs, delivered royalties and brought new skills into an area where previously there was little current mining activity.CITATION:Nilsson, K and Connelly, D, 2015. "Florida, the State that supplied 82 per cent of the phosphate rock sold in the United. States in 19284, has two producing areas - the hard-rock and the land pebble districts. Production of the hard-rock field, decreasing importance in recent years, is now confined to mines near Dunnellon, in Marion and. Citrus Counties. The land-pebble district, with a production of almost 80 per coat of the nation's requirements, is located, in Polk and Hillsborough Counties. In the land-pebble area the phosphate deposits - probably Pliocene in age, derived by marine action from underlying, older, phosphate-bearing formations - consist of beds of phosphate matrix, covered by practically barren sands and clays. The overburden, ranging in thickness up to 45 feet, is removed by hydraulic methods or by drag-line excavators. The matrix, ordinarily less than 25 feet in thickness, is mined by hydraulicking and is pumped to adjacent washing plants for beneficiation. The dried product of the washing plants is the Florida pebble rock that is sold in foreign as well as domestic markets.The beneficiation of phosphate ores in the land-pebble district of Florida has been largely limited in the past to the recovery of the coarser pebbles. By washing and screening the crude matrix a separation is effected at about 20 mesh (0.033 inch). The coarser material is the phosphate-rock product of the plant and the finer material is discarded. The amenability of the washer- rejects to treatment by other processes is being investigated. Of methods that may have some application to the treatment of the low-grade phosphatic sands that comprise the greater portion of the washer-rejects, gravity concentration has received some study.Laboratory experiments to determine the amenability of phosphate sands to gravity methods of concentration were first performed in October, 1927. Later, in the winter of 1928-1929, a further series of teats was made,. In these later tests phosphatic sands were concentrated by hydraulic classification, and. also by hydraulic classification followed by tabling. In these experiments concentrates with an analysis above the minimum grade of commercial phosphate rock (66 per cent bone phosphate of lime - B.P.L.) obtained. The recovery of the phosphate varied but was promising enough to warrant further study. A more comprehensive investigation was therefore outlined. This paper presents the results obtained from an investigation, of classification and tabling of phosphatic sands recently completed by the United States Bureau of Mines Su cooperation with certain Florida phosphate companies, the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, and the University of Alabama."

Mining is a risky business. The cost of exploring for new mineral deposits is high and the success rate of finding one worthy of development is relatively low. And once a deposit is identified, there is no guarantee that it will become a mine. Mining companies have to spend a lot of time and money on due diligence, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, and sustainable development and environmental issues before deciding whether the deposit will become a profitable mine. And then there are the millions of dollars spent in developing the deposit and building a mine. No wonder the mining industry has trouble attracting investment capital. Companies take a large risk in developing reserves and investors take a similar risk in investing in them. So mining companies must be as accurate as possible in determining mineralization that makes it to reserve status. After all, reserves are a company’s most important asset and one of the critical factors analysts and funding sources look at when determining if a mine or mining company is worth the risk.

A coal waste disposal dam failed on Buffalo Creek near Saunders, West Virginia, on February 26, 1972. This accident resulted in the loss of 125 lives, left over 4000 people homeless, and resulted in millions of dollars in damage to several downstream communities. As a result of this tragic event, major changes occurred in the mine waste disposal practices used by the U.S. coal industry. This paper summarizes changes in U.S. coal-waste disposal practices in the nearly 35 years since the Buffalo Creek dam failure and identifies safety issues that need to be addressed for continued improvement. While many organizations and individuals have played roles in the improvements that have occurred, this paper focuses on the role played by MSHA and its predecessor agencies.

Pillar recovery continues to be a significant ground control hazard. During the past decade, 10 miners were killed during pillar extraction operations in southern West Virginia. Studies conducted during the past decade have identified a number of “risk factors” that can be used to evaluate pillar extraction plans: •Cut sequence •Final stump •Timber or Mobile Roof Supports •Roof bolting •Intersection span •Depth of cover •Roof quality •Age of workings For each of these factors, rock mechanics science suggests which alternative would be expected to be more risky. For example, numerical models were used to evaluate different cut sequences, and indicated that less roof convergence occurred with the outside lift method than with the Christmas tree in the particular environment simulated. For many of the risk factors, accident statistics confirm the science. One finding was that currently almost 70% of the retreat coal in southern WV is being mined with MRS. In contrast, timber supports were used in 70% of the past decade’s pillaring fatalities. This paper discusses each of the risk factors in turn, presents the relevant accident statistics, and shows how the risk factors can be combined to estimate the overall hazard. It also addresses the use of pillar design to minimize the risk of global stability hazards including squeezes, massive collapses, and bumps.

PURSUANT to a recommendation made by the Section delegates at their conference at the Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E. last February, the Directors, at their meeting on March 15, 1944, appointed a committee charged with the duty of investigating the present status of licensing and registration of engineers, and to make a report on the whole subject for the information of the mining fraternity. The committee consisted of E. W. Ellis, chairman, H. D. Keiser, Henry T. Mudd, J. J. Croston, and Simon Strauss. Messrs. Keiser and Strauss were unable to assist in the work of the committee, and Mr. Mudd was forced to resign in July, his place being taken by A. F. Greaves-Walker. Able assistance was given the committee by T. Keith Legare, executive secretary of the National Council of State Boards of Engineering Examiners, and by Ed. ward Larson, executive secretary of the National Society of Professional Engineers. The accompanying somewhat condensed version of the report of Mr. Ellis's committee, dated Oct. 15, 1944, is confined to facts rather than to recommendations. The "Model Law" to which reference is made was first drafted by repre¬sentatives of six national engineering societies in 1911. It has since been amended many times, the latest version dated June 1943 is recommended to the State Licensing Boards as a pattern for formulating or amending state laws. "While the design of a control strategy depends on the available process knowledge, its implementation depends on the available process information. On-line chemical analyzers are today widely spread in the mineral processing industry. A real-time concentration measurement of chemical components is valuable information that could bring control strategies to whole new levels. However, the use of these measures rarely reaches anything more than process monitoring. The reason is simple: the on-line chemical measurements quality is most of the time insufficient to be directly included in control strategies. The choice is then made to let the critical eye of the engineer or the operator appreciates the measurements before making any decision based on it.Data reconciliation through mass balance is a technique today widely used in the mineral processing industry to increase the accuracy and the reliability of plant data, mainly for accounting and survey analysis purposes. Real-time data reconciliation of on-line measurements appears as a natural coupling of technologies that could bring new process optimization trends. Once overcome the technical difficulties, full valorization of the instrumentation investment could be reached.This paper presents the application of real-time data reconciliation for process control and performance monitoring. It proposes a general approach, discusses challenges and illustrates concepts with industry experiences."

This Bureau of Mines report discusses research to analyze and evaluate extended bumper systems in order to determine the degree of protection provided to equipment operators in the event of rear-end collisions be-tween off-road rear-dump haulage trucks. The basic characteristics of rear-end collisions were determined, and a detailed analysis of the col-lision dynamics was performed to identify the magnitude and direction of impact loads, the amount of energy that must be absorbed during impact, and the major factors that affect the outcome of a collision. Separate bumper designs were developed to facilitate attachment to four 170-st-capacity haulage truck frame types.

The Bureau of Mines, through a cooperative agreement with Duquesne Light Co. of Pennsylvania, field tested a method of using pneumatic stowing of crushed limestone to construct seals in long-abandoned mine openings that were part of an active mine closed shortly before sealing. A total of 13 openings at 11 sites were backfilled. In pneumatic stowing, material is conveyed through a pipeline and into the mine opening under low air pressure. The stowing equipment consists of a power sup-ply, a blower, a feeder to inject material into the pipeline, and a nozzle for directing the placement. Material is ejected from the nozzle at high velocity, creating a high-compaction fill upon impact. The fill material used was well-graded limestone aggregate up to 1-1/2 inches in diameter, with sufficient fines. This fill was modified at five locations by the addition of portland cement, expansive cement, and/or bentonite. The pneumatic stowing method is safer and faster than conventional methods, is cost competitive, and eliminates or reduces the exposure of workers to possible hazards since the nozzle can be kept outside the mine opening. The equipment is mobile, but some modifications in the technique would improve performance. The technique was used at remote locations where other methods could not be used without disturbing the environment.

Both client and end user are quite rightly influenced by their own experiences. The question is who is right, the client and his consultant, the supplier or perhaps a combination of these. This paper looks at some of the fundamental variances that often occur in the approach to the mechanical design of drum hoists, based on our experiences of recent years. Para ello, se realizaron pruebas de lixiviación con concentrados de enargita de tres minas de Chile, Perú y Estados Unidos, donde los resultados señalaron que la disolución de la enargita fue más rápido con la influencia del carbón en la solución lixiviante, incluso después de haber reciclado el carbón.

The objectives of this study were to: (a) determine the state of the art for the control effectiveness of various chemical dust suppressants, (b) field test the effectiveness of the dust suppressants, and (c) develop technical guidelines for selecting and implementing cost effective tailings pond dust control programs. Chemical stabilizers evaluated under field conditions were: Coherax, Calcium Lignosulfonate, Nalco 656, 655, and Magnesium Chloride. Testing in the field utilized a portable field in-situ wind tunnel. The wind tunnel was placed on the tailings surface and simulated wind speeds of up to 80 mph were used to determine wind erosion threshold velocities. Emission rate testing was performed with the wind tunnel through the use of a real-time cascade impactor. A control cost effectiveness evaluation was performed to determine how efficient the chemical stabilizers were on a dollars expended per acre basis.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health designed and conducted a study in an underground metal mine to assess the effects of selected diesel emissions control technologies on the concentrations of diesel particulate matter and gases in underground mine air. The control technologies studied included diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems, filtration system with disposable filter elements, diesel oxidation catalytic converter, and biodiesel blends. Each technology was tested on a mining vehicle operated in an isolated area of an underground mine supplied with fresh air. These isolated zone tests allowed for the operation of vehicles under conditions and over duty cycles that closely mimic actual duty cycles of production equipment. The DPF systems reduced the elemental carbon (EC) concentrations in mine air between 88% and 99%. The same systems reduced total particulate matter (TPM) concentrations in mine air by approximately 75%. The biodiesel blends B20 and B50 caused a reduction in the EC concentrations of 26% and 48%, respectively. Those blends also reduced TPM concentrations by 9% and 24%, respectively. The use of #1 diesel fuel reduced EC concentration by 13% compared to #2 diesel fuel. An increase in nitrogen dioxide concentration of up to two times was seen when platinum-catalyzed DPF systems were tested.

El presente trabajo describe una alternativa de sistematización de las observaciones preventivas generadas en las áreas operativas de la minera Antamina a través del programa de Prevención de Riesgos para así reentrenar, reforzar y evitar perdidas por accidentes en cualquier tipo de industria. En ese sentido, cada miembro ya sea propio o socio estratégico de Antamina, es conciente de la prevención mediante la observación. Dicho enfoque evidencia no solo lo malo, sino también todas las consecuencias que esto conlleva. Por ello, la base de dicho programa es la detección anticipada de los actos y condiciones que nos puedan generar pérdidas.
