In order to appreciate fully the place of palaeontology within the general framework of the geological sciences, consideration must be given to the time, about 150 years ago, just before the study of fossils was beginning to be applied to geological problems. At theend of the eighteenth century, almost all geologists recognised that fossils were the remains of animals and plants that had lived at the time when the rocks in which they occur were formed. It was also realized that many-some geologists thought all-rocks hadbeen formed under water, but as regards the order of succession in which these rocks had originated, and the relative ages of rocks found in different parts of the world or even of one country, only the haziest and most contradictory ideas existed.Around the turn from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, a widely taught system of theories was that of the German professor, Abraham Gottlob Werner, who believed that the surface of the earth had once been covered by a universal ocean at whose bottom all rocks had been deposited. As the level of this ocean gradually subsided, older rocks-so Werner taught-are now generally found in the mountains or at great depth below the younger rocks; this was his "Primitive Division" which included granite, gneiss, schists, slates, basalt, porphyry and other igneous and metamorphic rocks, all of which he believed to be of sedimentary origin. Younger rocks, according to Werner, were formed at successively lower levels as the water receded. Next in age he placed a "Transition System" of limestones and greywackes; still younger the so-called "Floetz Division," which included sandstone, limestone, gypsum, salt, coal, but also some basalt, porphyry and other rocks; youngest were the alluvial deposits of recent clays, loams, sands and gravel. Thus, in the Wernerian system the age of a rock was determined on the basis of its petrographic properties and the height of its occurrence relative to sea-level.Here and there these ideas survived well into the nineteenth century. As late as 1825, Charles Darwin listened to lectures by Professor Jamieson, one of the last proponents of Wernerian theories in England. The fact that entirely different kinds of fossils occurredin rocks which were regarded as contemporaneous did not worry the theoreticians.It is, therefore, noteworthy and significant that the value of fossils for the interpretation of geological events was demonstrated to the geologists by an engineer and surveyor, WiIIiam Smith, who, although no professional geologist, has often been called the "Father of English Geology." His professional work, which was mainly concerned with drainage and irrigation projects, took Smith to all parts of England, where he sometimes journeyed as much as 10,000 miles in 11 year. Smith was a keen observer and, unhampered by theoretical speculations, he noted the occurrence of fossils and collected specimens wherever he went. The banded iron formations "jasper bars," jaspilites, banded hematite quartzites or banded ironstones, etc., as they have. variously been termed in Western Australia, constitute one of the most striking features of the Pre-Cambrian in this State. They occur in at least two distinct divisions of the Pre-Cambrian, viz., in horizons interbedded with quartzites, shales and thin bedded dolomite in the N~llagine (Proterozoic) Series; and amongst the Older Pre-Cambrian rocks, associated with the metamorphosed sediments of the Jimperding-Chittering Series, the Yilgarn Whitestone Series and the Mosquito Creek Series, and interbedded with metamorphosed basic lavas, tuffs and sediments of the Older prenstone or Kalgoorlie Series.In the Hamersley Ranges in the north-west of Western Australia banded ferroginous cherts are well developed amongst the horizontal sediments of Nullagine Age. These iron formations have recently sprung into prominence as they have been found to form the host rocks for important deposits of· blue asbestos. They are closely comparable with the unique crocidolite-bearing banded ironstones of the Cape Province, South Africa, and have been described elsewhere in some detail by the writer. (1) t .The banded iron formations with which it is intended to deal principally in the following pages, form most abundantly in the Central and Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia where they form portions of the Older Greenstone or Kalgoorlie Series of auriferous rocks. In these regions their chemical inertness and physical hardness provide considerable resistance to the agents of erosion and consequently they frequently stand out in strong topographic relief in otherwise monotonously flat or gently rolling country. These banded-iron formations have proved of considerable direct economic importance in the goldfields and in other portions of the State because of thei!! associations with 'gold, iron -and to' a lesser extent, manganese; whilst indirectly because of their peculiar nature, form and topographic prominence, etc, they have been of tremendous assistance to the field geologist both in the practical application of methods of geological mapping and in the' elucidation of geological structures. Finally, they have recently acquired a new importance in the specialised search for ore-bearing lodes or for structural information over areas of soil-covered country, as their form and composition make them ideal subjects for the use of either electrical or m!1-gnetic methods of geophysical prospecting.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Watershed tungsten deposit is located in the Hodgkinson Province of north Queensland, Australia. The deposit is hosted by Siluro-Devonian flysch-type meta-sediments of the Hodgkinson Formation, which were subjected to four major deformation events. Mineralisation has occurred syn- to post-D4 and is related to the intrusion of S-type granitoids of the Permian Whypalla Supersuite.Watershed is located within a regional NW–SE-striking melange zone composed of brecciated and intermixed arenites and shales. The major NW–SE-striking Tullah fault zone is situated in close proximity to the east of the deposit.The Watershed deposit occurs within a tightly folded upright anticline with NW-plunging fold axis. The anticline contains a major package of coarse-grained to conglomeratic arenite, which harbours the Watershed mineralisation. Several alteration styles occur within the arenites, of which Fe-poor calc-silicate alteration dominated by clinozoisite/epidote is the most significant. Less widespread but locally important alteration styles comprise garnet-dominated calc-silicate alteration, albitisation and sericitisation. The arenites are enveloped by unmineralised carbonaceous shales and shale breccias.Tungsten mineralisation occurs solely as molybdenum-poor scheelite and can be found as three styles: disseminated mineralisation in calc-silicate altered arenites, vein-style mineralisation with quartz-albite-scheelite veins and minor but high-grade mineralisation in albitised felsic dykes.Contact metamorphic rocks and geophysical data indicate the proximity of an underlying granitic body. It is believed that this granitic body was the main driver of the hydrothermal system generating the Watershed deposit. An early mineralisation stage caused the selective calc-silicate alteration of the arenites, while a second stage caused the vein-style high-grade mineralisation. The folded shales enveloping the arenites worked as an effective barrier that kept the mineralising fluids in a confined rock volume.The scheelite mineralisation at Watershed is open to depth, with a granite-hosted porphyry or greisen-style mineralisation anticipated below the current resource.CITATION:Griessmann, M and Williamson, J, 2015. Introduction Most high purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz, generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found that is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies, Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco Inc., mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, IL. Both companies mine from various locations within a 10-mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Co. mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, AR. Geology The southern Illinois white tripoli area is on the southern flank of the Illinois Basin. The commercial silica zone is a facies of the Clear Creek chert of Lower Devonian Age. To the north, where it occurs deep in the basin, the Clear Creek is a siliceous limestone. In the mining area, thin overburden has allowed access by surface ground water, which has leached away the carbonate content and left a quite pure silica residue. Fossils characteristic of sea bottom deposition, such as brachiopods and trilobites, are occasionally encountered in mining. The structure of the mining area is poorly known, due to infrequent outcrops. Strata in most mines are inclined at dips of 5° to 20°. There appear to be occasional high angle normal and reverse faults, but these are seldom of any significance in mining. The friable white silica zone mined in the Clear Creek chert is overlain by dark brownish-red chert and siliceous shale. Exploration drilling to date has not encountered the base of the microcrystalline tripolitic zone. Chemical content Leaching by ground water solution has removed virtually all the carbonate from the original siliceous limestone. Impurities encountered are red to yellow iron oxides, aluminous clays, and occasional black manganese oxides. The silica has no detectable formula water. A typical chemical analysis and physical properties are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Mineralogy and crystallinity Southern Illinois friable tripoli appears amorphous under the polarizing microscope. No crystal structure and only occasional, vague, patchy anisotropism is evident. However, the material gives an excellent quartz X-ray diffraction pattern. Headrace Tunnels and parts of the Access Adit Tunnels of Kárahnjúkar Hydropower project, KAR-14, in Iceland will be excavated using three full-face Robbins Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). TBM sizes range from 7.23 to 7.63 meters in diameter and the total headrace tunnel length is approximately 40 km. The crushed rock is transported on conveyor belts to disposal areas near each Adit. The estimated average excavation rate is approximately 25 meters per day per machine. Electricity will begin to flow in April 2007, and the project is scheduled for completion in 2009. This paper is divided into four sections. In the PROJECT OVERVIEW section, a short overview of the scope of the project is presented. In the GEOLOGY section, the geological condition along the tunnel drives is briefly introduced. The TBM DESIGN section discusses the various design criteria and the resulting machine specifications. The paper concludes in the TBM OPERATION section with a case history describing the tunneling operation from start-up to the time of the writing of this paper.

New Technologies, New Challenges and New Opportunities For quite some time now, numerous explosive manufacturers have spent untold man-hours and millions of dollars trying to develop a blast initiation technology that would “once and for all” provide users with what was once believed to be only a theoretical possibility...nominal timing. Zero “cap scatter” (the amount of variation of delay timing from the targeted nominal) has been the industry’s goal ever since delays were first introduced into the marketplace. Just as adding delay time between blast-holes improved blast performance since their introduction, having the wrong delay or a poorly timed blast has proven to be very inefficient and in many cases hazardous. The question of how precise a blast initiation system needs to be still remains unanswered, but electronic detonator systems being used today indicate that significant improvements can be achieved over conventional pyrotechnic detonators. These systems can typically provide single digit millisecond ranges of variability, if not sub-millisecond in some cases.

Climate and hydrology data are required during all phases of mining projects, including impact assessment, mine planning and design, operational water management and mine closure and reclamation design. In the Canadian north, data sources are spatially sparse and often short-term in nature, and design parameters are often estimated based on data collected at sites far distant. Confidence in such data can be increased by verification or modification using data collected during properly implemented baseline and operational monitoring programs. A data set that accurately reflects conditions at the project is more readily accepted by regulatory agencies during the permitting process, and allows development of more effective and economic water management, mitigation measures and compensation. Data requirements and collection methods for developing an adequate data set for mine development are reviewed. These are illustrated using examples from oil sands, diamond and metal mines in the Canadian north.

We present an analysis of the propagation in a uniform tunnel of semi -circular cross section that contains two axial conductors. In particular, we show that, even if one of these conductors has high ohmic loss, one of the two propagating modes has relatively low attenuation. This corresponds to the situation where an unloaded dedicated wire is used to improve radio frequency communication in a mine tunnel that contains a heavily loaded trolley wire.

"AbstractIn order to raise the enormous amounts of capital which will be essential for the development of Canada's mineral and petroleum resources, this country's resource industry must be permitted to earn an acceptable rate of return. The existing tax regime, with its high rates, complexities and misdirected incentives, presents a serious obstacle to our resource industries in their development of Canada's immense , but increasingly lean, resources. Government tax and other policies are not the only cause of the crisis now facing the resource sector in Canada, but a reformed tax system, with stable and reasonable tax burdens, is required if Canada's resources of minerals, oil and natural gas are to continue to contribute in the future, as in the past, to our national well-being.An independent task force, organized under the auspices of the Canada West Foundation, has recently completed a wide -ranging report: on the future development of Canada's mineral, oil and gas resources. This five-volume report, completed after almost two years of research and study, concludes that Canada •is facing a major crisis •in the development of our resources, It states that unless corrective action is taken now, mineral production and exports could decline drastically after 1985, at the same time that Canada would face massive bills for imported oil because of inadequate and declining production.The task force, chaired by the author of this article, has put forward recommendations for a fundamental shift in both federal and provincial policies in order that Canada's mineral reserves can be developed in the national interest. The City of Atlanta Water Department required the construction of a two sludge tanks and a wet well at the existing Chattahoochee Water Treatment Plant. Western Summit won a design build contract to build the project and proceeded to evaluate the wet well size options, and construction procedures. The final design required the construction of a 1 million gallon tank. The proximity of the underground tank to adjacent roads and existing plant structures ruled out laying back the excavation. As a result a tied back sheet pile retaining wall was initially proposed.

Aragonite, co-occurring with calcite and dolomite as matrix minerals, has been discovered in Mahogany zone oil shales of Colorado's Eocene Green River Formation, posing puzzles on the geochemical patterns of their separate origins, reasons for their simultaneous existence, and their interrelation. The presence of aragonite is demonstrated by X-ray diffraction. Amounts of aragonite and dolomite are significantly and inversely related, but the calcite quantity is essentially independent of either aragonite or dolomite quantity. A geochemical pattern outlining the deposition conditions that created the Green River Formation oil shale is postulated from characteristics of the oil shale. The development of the three separate carbonates--aragonite, calcite, and dolomite--the inverse relationship between aragonite and dolomite, and the independence of amounts of calcite and the other two carbonates are shown to be natural consequences of this oil-shale genesis pattern.

"INTRODUCTION Coal is a complex substance consisting of many different constituents representing many chemical compounds, very few of which are known. It is homo genetic, however, in that it is derived almost entirely from plants. But plants as a whole are complex, being composed of a large number of tissues, each consisting of a large number of cells in a great number of arrangements and composed of a number of chemical compounds in great variety of proportions, and enclosing a large number of waste products representing a large number of' chemical compounds as cell contents. Coal should therefore be expected to be a very complex substance.That coals are formed from plants is no longer debated, but the manner in which coal was formed from the plants leaves many problems still unsolved. However, in general it is now conceded that all coals of all ranks and ages had their origin in deposits completely analogous to our peat deposits of today and that coal formation is a process that runs through the whole series, beginning with peat, and through, the various ranks of lignite, subbituminous, high-, medium-, and low-volatile bituminous, semianthracite, and anthracite in a related chain. In the study of coal, it is therefore of the utmost importance to study and to know not only the plants contributing but .also the manner in which they are transformed into the substances forming the deposits. It is therefore of the greatest value to review briefly the formation of :,eat as it is known today, and to inquire into the facts as to what plants contribute to peat, what parts and products prevail, what are the chemical compounds that enter and which prevail."

This study investigates the feasibility of using waste iron slag, the by-product from a mineral sands processing works, in road construction. The study includes the different options investigated for the treatment of a leachate that is produced during the cooling of the iron slag, prior to processing. It also reviews the reasons for choosing the current treatment option that is being trialed. Cooling the iron slag with water results in the formation of a leachate with a high pH and high sulphide concentration. This leachate can seep into the ground and, over time, it will contaminate the ground water. A system was designed to collect and treat the leachate to prevent contamination of surrounding natural water sources. Numerous leachate treatment options were investigated to find cost effective method of treatment After cooling, the iron slag is passed through an iron recovery plant and the unsaleable product is placed on a dumpsite. Rain percolates through the dumpsite, which can result in the formation of a leachate that can contribute to a contaminated plume. After extensive testwork, it was found that the dumpsite, which was leached of contaminants, could be screened and used as a G5material (specifications in Table II) in road construction. The initial challenge was to establish that this material was environmentally safe for use in this particular application. Approval from the Department of Water Affairs (DWAF) was required for the testwork and then for the long-term use of this material in the construction industry. The following challenge involved establishing a market for the material. Construction companies in the area were reluctant to change to a new product that was not naturally occurring. The economics of this project are extremely sensitive to transport costs and hence only projects within a specified radius can be supplied with the Black Top Gravel (BTG). This project is not are venue generator, but it does save the money that would be required to manage the dump, and it reduces the closure costs.

There is now a new generation of mobile crushing and screening plant systems available which have been developed based on the motivation of reducing truck haulage. Newly designed mobile crushing and screening plant systems have the advantages of mobility, flexibility, economy and reliable performance, making this system very appealing for small- to medium-sized projects or projects where a number of resources are separated by distance.A brief review of the past history and experience with transportable crushing plants provides an insight into some of the issues with transportable plants in mineral processing. A closer look at a simple model based on exploiting small but high-grade orebodies suggests the concept has merit, however there are many more engineering, logistics, legal, technical and management aspects which have limited the application of such a concept in the resource sector. This paper explores the concept in detail and endeavours to analyse the preferred commodities and scenarios under which the concept could be used and the economic and logistical limitations for iron ore. The paper also looks at the risk assessment criteria to be applied in selecting the type of resource projects where the model could be applied successfully. Other aspects considered in this paper are the project planning requirements, technical and economic feasibility, bankability and operability. The paper is an attempt to co-relate the findings of pile capacity using a number of formula suggested by various authors with the actual field load test results. Five locations consisting of wholly sandy or clayey soils were selected for this purpose. The clayey soils are on a hilly area having clays of medium to stiff consistency upto a depth of 20 m The sandy soils are near the bank of a river having angle of internal friction 'Ø' value ranging from 30 to 35 Degree. The details of the soil properties are given in Table-1 Bored cast-in-situ piles of 30 cm diameter and a length varies from 6.5 m to 13 m were designed and cast for load test to be carried out. The load applied was twice the design load. The load vs settlement curves were obtained. The theoritical values obtained by formula suggested by various authors were superimposed on the curves. From the careful study of these curves it is seen that De Ruiter and Berigen values are close to the actual results for clayey soil. For sandy soil it is found that both the BIS method and Meyerhof method found to give conservative resuslts. A multiplication factor is suggested to theoritical values for obtaining satisfactory results.

"This article addresses the prevalence of poor public reporting practices of coal exploration results, coal resources and coal reserves in southern Africa. Currently, the reporting of coal tonnage without supporting coal qualities or saleable tonnes and quality is a poor reporting practice that occurs far too often. Not all coal is equal — therefore it is extremely important that investors or potential investors are provided with the full details of both run-of-mine (ROM) and saleable coal tonnage, their associated qualities and other material and relevant information.Competent or qualified persons should note that publicly reported information should be sufficient to enable an informed reader to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information provided. “Companies are encouraged to provide information in their public reports, which is as comprehensive as possible (CRIRSCO, 2013).” However, too often this isn’t the case, and material matters are either not reported or inadequately disclosed.According to the South African National Standard (SANS) 10320:2014 draft document, “tonnage and coal quality that will be available for sale, either in the raw ROM state (raw saleable) at a specified moisture content, or after beneficiation of the ROM coal by processing operations to produce materials at specified qualities, size ranges and moisture contents. The assessments must demonstrate that at the time of reporting, the marketing of the products is reasonably justified. The basis of the predicted practical product yield to achieve the saleable coal reserve must be stated. The moisture basis of reporting shall be stated.” An example as to why coal qualities are so important to the public, the requirements of South Africa’s electric public utility (Eskom) power stations are detailed in the followint paragraphs. The Kendal power station, commissioned in 1988, operates at a calorific value (CV) range of 19 to 20 MJ/ kg, an ash content between 29 and 34 percent and volatiles between 20 to 21 percent. Other power stations, such as Kriel or Hendrina, may require different qualities, such as a CV range of 22 to 23 MJ/kg, an ash content between 20 and 28 percent and volatiles between 22 to 23 percent. Thus, in terms of domestic saleable coal, it is not just about reporting the coal qualities but also informing the investor as to which power station the coal is intended to be sold as “boilers are designed to burn particular qualities of coal” and “it is not always possible to transfer coal between stations because of different quality requirements at each station (Chetty, 2010).” Sulfur content is another important quality with the ideal coal content having a quality of less than 1 percent sulfur."

A project is underway to convert a validated methodology to a system that will permit the near real time interpretation of loading data from longwall powered supports, allowing rapid adaptation of mining strategies, maintenance scheduling and set pressures for optimal roof control. Such a system has the potential to significantly reduce roof control problems and is a pre-requisite to successfully fully automating a longwall face. The development depended upon a robust methodology for interpreting the pressure sensor data coming from the face in the context of support strata interaction using a novel characteristic load cycle analysis concept. New software was developed capable of handling the large quantity of data emanating from a modern longwall with the current level of signal corruption and loss, accurately delineating load cycles and extracting the critical load cycle features essential for interpreting how the support and strata are interacting. Existing software being used to access the pressure data were found either to be incapable of delineating load cycles at all or, where they could, the accuracy was low, making it impractical to use them in combination with the new advances in load cycle analysis. The software is currently being extended from ?off line? to ?on line? in order to provide a real time response to changing strata conditions.
