Suite à la publication du « Guide sur la gestion des parcs à résidus miniers » en septembre 1998, les membres de l?industrie minière ont appliqué les éléments de gestion du Guide, permettant ainsi une amélioration continue des opérations. En février 2000, l?industrie minière a indiqué le besoin d?établir des lignes directives plus spécifiques pour l?opération sécuritaire des parcs à résidus. Dans cette optique, l?Association Minière Canadienne a publié, en septembre 2002, un Guide pour l?exploitation, l?entretien et la surveillance (EES) des parcs à résidus miniers. Suite au développement du Guide et à son application sur plusieurs sites miniers, il apparaît que la mise en oeuvre d?un Manuel ESS des parcs à résidus miniers permet : ? d?établir les responsabilités des intervenants; ? de s?assurer que les critères d?opération sont appliqués; ? de mettre en oeuvre le plan de déposition des résidus et de gestion de l?eau; ? de rencontrer les normes et exigences environnementales; ? de définir un programme d?entretien et de surveillance des ouvrages; ? d?identifier les risques et de mettre en oeuvre un plan d?intervention d?urgence; de démontrer une opération diligente.

This bibliography is the result of a cooperative project undertaken by the Bureau of Ships and the Bureau of Mines to accumulate literature published to date on zirconium and hafnium and to establish an information center on these metals for the use of any interested research organization or library. This bibliography, which will be supplemented as additional information is accumulated, consists of references, with abstracts, to pertinent literature on the subject published from 1907 to date.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1980, 13 companies operated 33 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 62% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 30% of the total production; Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas 19%; Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina 15%; other central and eastern States 36%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1980 was valued at over $7 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 26% of domestic consumption in 1980, building 22%, transportation 21%, electrical 12%, consumer durables 7%, and other uses 12%.

[During the past year the Metallurgical Fundamentals Section gave about an equal amount of time to the experimental determination of fundamental thermodynamic constants and to the demonstration of the application of such data to more directly practical metallurgical problems. The first division of the work - the actual experimental measurements of typical thermodynamic constants - was carried out an two problems, termed ?continuing? programs, namely, (1) measurements of Specific Heats at Low Temperatures and (2) Measurements of Heats of Formation and Free Energies. Specific substances chosen for investigation are classified as (n) those that have been the subject of requests for information from the industry and that, upon examination, seem of sufficient practical importance to justify study, and (b) compounds that are difficult to treat metallurgically, or whose specific thermodynamic properties have not yet been determined satisfactorily and for which accurate data might suggest improved or new methods of Metallurgical treatment, or (c) materials recognized as belonging to a social class with exceptional thermodynamic properties and, hence, of scientific as well as technical importance.]

This report is not merely a recitation or brief of the year's work; it contains technical information in usable form, although a some of this has appeared or will he issued in greater detail in separate reports. The table of contents that follows fists the principal investigations accomplished and those that are being continued. Other projects are being begun and contemplated for the next year.

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) become law April 5, 1644, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this program bulletins were published on a pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and oil shale.5 The Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because coal gasification is prerequisite to Hither the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable, collection of technical information in this form will be valuable. The material is presented in three parts, as follows: I. United States Patents. II. United Kingdom, Australian, Canadian, and South African Patents. III. Belgium, French, German, Italian, and Swedish Patents. The domestic patents for this bulletin were collected between 1963 and 1955. Some of the Foreign Patents were collected at the same time and a few of them later in 1961. Part I was published in 1960; Part II was published in 1962.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting investigations to determine how fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Govern- ment can be utilized with greater efficiency. As a result of these investigations a number of reports have been published, each report treating of one phase of fuel utilization. A list of these publications is given at the end of this bulletin. The efficient utilization of coal depends on the correct design of furnaces and on their proper operation. To attain both of these conditions a knowledge of the fundamental principles of combus- tion is necessary. Therefore, the study of the combustion of coal in industrial furnaces has been made a part of the bureau's fuel in- vestigations. The desirability of investigating the fundamental principles of combustion was suggested by the study of a large number of steam- ing tests made by the fuel-testing division on coals from all of the more important fields in the United States. The results of these tests have been published in Bulletin 325 of the United States Geological Survey and in Bulletin 23 of the Bureau of Mines. As a result of that study a plan to investigate the combustion of coal in a special apparatus in which all conditions could be controlled was presented to the National Advisory Board for Fuels and Struc- tural Materials at its meeting of April 10 and 11, 1906. The plan received the approval of the board, and since the establishment of the experiment station of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh the investigation of the combustion of coal has been carried on intermit- tently. The history of these investigations is given in Technical Paper 63.

We are thrilled to welcome you to the 2025 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), which will be held in Dallas, TX. This year’s conference will showcase the continued trend of strong industry interest, as there will be a record setting 115 papers being presented over the course of three days. The set of papers compiled in this book captures the latest and greatest information on a broad array of topics within our fascinating tunneling industry. We hope that the compilation of selected papers in this book will provide a comprehensive recap of the conference while also providing a source of future reference for contractors, engineers, and anyone in general who is a student of our beloved and unique industry. Since its inception in 1972, RETC has been the preeminent tunneling forum to promote ideas, tell stories, share lessons learned, and promote new technologies. RETC prides itself on its focus towards highlighting real-world experiences and practical ideas, with the intent to help the entire industry learn from one another and grow. The need for us all to stay sharp and remain on the cutting edge of technology has never been stronger – the technology and ideas that have been applied in aerospace are now attempting to mix with tunneling, and the advancement of AI continues to permeate all industries. However, no amount of technology or AI can fully replace the human element, and in our tunneling industry, the human element is key and is what sets us apart. In tunneling, every project is different, because the ground is always different. We can only take what the ground will give us, and we must rely on our past experiences to get through present day challenges. Most importantly, we must rely on each other. This is the heart of what RETC is all about. For those of you attending this conference, we encourage you to attend as many sessions as possible and engage with your colleagues to discuss during the breaks in between sessions. This sharing of ideas is what keeps us connected and helps to expand our industry. Please also try to engage with the scholarship students and the newcomers who will be in attendance, as it is the new ideas and fresh energy from the next generation that will continue to make our industry thrive into the future. The program chairs thank and greatly appreciate the efforts made by our session chairs, co-chairs, authors, the members of the RETC Executive Committee, and most importantly the SME staff towards making this RETC possible.

These proceedings consist of papers presented at three Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminars on ergonomics in the mining industry. These seminars were held in December 1981, and covered topics relating to ergonomics and mining in the areas of the man-machine interface, and design of the work environment. This area of research is directed toward reducing accidents traditionally associated with human error.

High-grade gold-silver mineralization associated with electrum and argentite was discovered in a quartz vein at the Chappelle property, 273 km north of Smithers, B.C., in 1969 following a regional geochemical reconnaissance program in the Cassiar-Omineca Mountains. Subsequent exploration resulted in the discovery of numerous quartz veins with associated precious-metal values in a belt 17 by 3 km in area centrally located within Toodoggone Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Lower to Middle Jurassic age and a window of Takla Group volcanic rocks of Upper Triassic age. More detailed investigations, consisting principally of 5677 m of surface drilling in 57 holes and crosscutting, drifting and raising on Chapelle Vein A, has outlined a high-grade gold-silver-bearing shoot with a strike length of 200 m, an average width of about 3 m and extending to an average depth of about 40 m below surface.

This is the fifth of a series of annual reports4/ of technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the occurrence, properties, mining, preparation, and uses of coal. The research of the Bureau is carefully coordinated with the requirements of the producing and consuming industries, with a view to conservation of resources of coal in mining and use, and conservation of the health and lives of workmen employed in these industries. Such coordination is facilitated by the wide range of specialization of the several groups on engaged in studies concerning coal. Here are reported correlated studies ranging from paleobotanic analysis of the formation of coal as it occurred some millions of years ago to the effect of mechanical methods of mining on present-day employment in mines. As this is a summary of the current work of the Bureau of Mines, so the Bureau likewise has provided a condensed review of the outstanding current work of others on research and technology of coal 5/.

INTERNATIONAL conferences on safety in mines originated in 1912 when, in response to an invitation issued by the United States, representatives of Austria-Hungary, Belgium, France, and Germany participated in a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pa The record shows that a permanent organization was proposed to be developed through. diplomatic channels. However, the advent of war 2 years later prevented this proposal from coming to fruition. No further cooperation between the Bureau of Mines and a group having: similar interests in a foreign country took place until 1924, when formal cooperation with the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain was established. Interchange of personnel and results of research under that arrangement have resulted in a number of publications in both countries and more rapid advance in knowledge than could have been obtained through the same efforts exerted independently.

ABSTRACT: Hydraulic experiments have been conducted since 1997 within a small fractured calcareous rock mass in southeastern France, at a site called Coaraze. On this reduced-scale site closing a floodgate located on a downstream spring produces repeated hydraulic loadings. Simultaneous measurements of normal deformations and pressure in several joints have provided a better understanding of the hydromechanical behaviour of such a fractured rock mass. The present paper first describes both the site and conceptual interpretation of the measurements performed. We showed that accurate measurement reproduction requires incorporating certain features: a variable normal joint stiffness, the joint vicinity (through introducing a Z coefficient), and the initial stress state. The paper then develops an original analytical interpretation of the coupled pressure-displacement measurements carried out, which reveal the high level of measurement suitability to the non-linear behaviours examined. 2D modelling, using the discontinuous code (UDEC) was used to proceed with the calibration step. In diesem kleinen Standort, werden wiederholte Wasserdruck Erhöhungen durch das Schliessen eines Hahnes produziert. Gleichzeitiger Druck und normale Verformung Meßungen in mehreren Fugen haben erlaubt, das hydromechanische Verhalten einer solche gebrochene Felsenmasse besser zu verstehen. Der Artikel beschreibt zuerst den Standort und stellt die begrifflichen Interpretationen der Meßungen vor. Um die Meßungen gut zu reproduzieren ist es wesentlich, bestimmte Faktoren wie die veränderliche normale Steifheit der Fugen, die Nachbarschaft der Fugen (über einen Z-Koeffizient) und der Spannungstand zu berücksichtigen. Der Artikel erklärt die originale Methode für die Druck- und Verformungs-Meßungen Interpretation und zeigt die gute Korrelation der Meßungen mit dem nicht-linearen angenommen Verhaltens der Fugen. Die numerische 2D-Modellierung mit dem UDEC Software ist für die Verkeilung der Faktoren gebraucht worden. Pour bien reproduire les mesures, Il est essentiel de prendre en compte certains facteurs tels que la raideur normale variable du joint, le voisinage du joint (par l'intermédiaire d'un coefficient Z), l'état de contrainte initial. L'article précise la méthode originale d'interprétation des mesures pression-déplacements qui montre la bonne adéquation aux lois de comportement non linéaire proposées. Long-range projection of demand for domestic crude oil indicates a continued upward movement and accentuates the need for increasing the recovery from known crude-oil resources to supplement expected future discoveries. Consequently, the industry and Government have given special attention to the viscous or heavy-oil deposits because they offer the distinct possibility of large order increases in ultimate recovery. This report presents data pertaining to 150 heavy-oil reservoirs in Arkansas including oil characteristics of samples from 38 of these reservoirs. To January 1, 1967, about 600 million bbl of heavy oil has been recovered from the 150 reservoirs in 63 oilfields; however, about 4.5 billion bbl, or 88 pct, of oil remained in the ground. Of prime importance is that much of this heavy-oil resource is in reservoirs having characteristics considered favorable for thermal-recovery operations. Data for the thermal projects initiated [thus Ear are presented in individual field discussions. Also discussed is the t crude oil supply-demand situation in the State.

Here are summarized 162 papers, published between 1933 and 1967, that deal with various aspects of ore genesis. Emphasis is placed on additions to, or modifications of, ore-formation theory, no matter what type of deposit is discussed. More space is given to papers on the formation of base-metal sulfides solely because more papers are written on this subject. The final conclusion is reached that a chemically and geologically sound theory for the genesis of ore deposits can be built around the concept of concentration of ore e’ements in a magmatically produced ore fluid and around such surface processes as may act to concentrate economically valuable materials from rocks of any origin exposed at the surface.

"The Red Dog Mine has increased mill throughput for most years since startup. Although flotation equipment has been added over the last 10 years, the Red Dog metallurgical performance has been restricted by a lack of adequate flotation capacity. Two reduced tonnage trials conducted in 1997 as well as numerous SAG relines have consistently indicated the potential to significantly increase both zinc concentrate recovery and grade with additional flotation capacity. Late in 1999, a new circuit was designed with increased flotation capacity while simplifylng the current circuit, providing for three stages of dilution cleaning, and creating a retreat section. The purpose of the retreat section is to target the more complex particles and allow the chemical environment to be fine tuned for improved iron depression. In total, twentyone (21) Outokumpu OK50 mechanical flotation cells and four (4) 3.66m dia. column cells will be added to the current flotation circuit. The VIP (Value Improvement Program) Mill Optimization project is also addressing thickening, water treatment and power issues and has a total budget of $US105 M. Startup of equipment will be phased in to minimize the impact on current operations and is expected to be complete by the end of Q3-2001.INTRODUCTIONRed Dog Operations started production in November 1989. The mine is located above the arctic circle in northwest Alaska. It is linked by an 80 km road to a port-site facility where the concentrate is stored. Concentrate is shipped to markets throughout the world during the one hundred (100) days of open seas. Typical of sedimentary exhalative deposits, the metallurgy proved to be challenging and coupled with many mechanical shortcomings, the initial few years were very difficult. The start-up issues were slowly resolved and in 1998, a major grinding expansion, the PRI (Production Rate Increase) project, was completed. The project was designed to allow a 40% increase over the 1995 throughput. In 2000 mill throughput was 3,050,000 tonnes to produce a total of 960,000 and 140,000 dry tonnes of zinc and lead concentrates respectively, making Red Dog the largest zinc concentrate producer in the world. To address a shortage of flotation capacity remaining from the PRI grinding expansion, a project designated as the VIP (Value Improvement Program) Mill Optimization project was initiated. The mill optimization project is targeted to produce 1,100,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate at 56% zinc grade and 87% zinc recovery. The project will add twenty-one (21) Outokumpu OK50 (50m3) flotation cells, four (4) 3.66mO column cells and address water treatment, thickening and power generation capacities."

Workers at the Consolidated Aluminum Corp. primary aluminum smelter at Lake Charles, LA walked out at midnight March 31 when their contract expired. Management personnel operated the smelter and prebaked carbon anode facilities until an agreement for a new 3-year contract was reached April 18. The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) began operations at its can recycling facility at Taylor, MS. The facility can process 3 million pounds per month of aluminum and steel cans. Alcoa announced plans to increase the capacity of its aluminum paste and flake production plant at Logan's Ferry, PA by 50 percent. Completion was scheduled for mid-1980.

In this two-year study, an evaluation of mining and reclamation practices at 159 randomly sampled surface coal mines in the United States was conducted. It is concluded that reclamation practices in most of the 22 coal-producing states were adequate during 1975, but that improvement in reclamation performance was desirable in the acid area of the central U. S. and in mountainous southwestern Virginia. Productivity improvements should result from research to determine efficient or optimal operating procedures for dragline stripping of single and multiple seams, surface mining of lignite, multicut and multiseam haulback mining on steep slopes, mountaintop removal, and surface mining in swampy or deeply glaciated areas. Specific candidate research projects are discussed in this report.

This Kaiser Engineers report on the feasibility of surface mining on the North Slope of Alaska has considered the quantity and quality of the North Slope deposits with attention paid to the economic, technical, and environmental constraints of the mining systems suggested for the three candidate minesites at Kukpowruk River, Elusive Creek, and Kuk River. Site selection, based on coal rank and quality as well as seam thickness and geometry, also considered demonstrated and hypothetical reserves relative to three mining systems (dragline, shovel, dragline and shovel), mining equipment requirements, infrastructure, and transportation relative to the Arctic environment and costed for potential markets. Throughout the report the delicate permafrost environment has received particular consideration. Recommendations based on the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of mining the coal deposits of Northern Alaska by surface mining techniques have resulted in two conclusions: 1. The coal deposits can be mined with currently available technology; 2. It is uneconomic to mine these coals given current coal resource estimates, costs, and market conditions. The 1967 Lignite Symposium was held at Grand Forks, N. Dak., on April 27-28, 1967. This was the fifth of these technical meetings and the fourth which was cosponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines. These symposia have provided a meeting place where current developments concerning technology and utilization of solid fuels (lignite) are presented. There was a registration of 255 persons from 24 States, the District of Columbia, six Canadian Provinces, Germany, and India. Many segments of coal or energy oriented organizations at many levels were represented. During the meeting, 18 presentations were made covering developments in electrical power generation, mining, estimation of reserves, combustion, gasification, and chemical and speciality uses of low-rank coals; these are com-piled in this Information Circular to provide a record of the symposium and to permit wider dissemination of the information. Proceedings of the other meetings have also been published.3
