The safety record of the mineral and mineral-fuel mining and processing industries in 1966 was improved slightly for the second consecutive year as indicated by reduced injury-frequency and injury-severity rates. The overall operating activity was higher in 1966, as measured by the increased number of men working and the total man-hours of worktime. Injury Experience.-The rate of occurrence of all disabling work injuries in the mineral industries was 17.38 per million man-hours in 1966. This overall rate comprised frequencies of 0.28 for fatal and 17.10 for nonfatal work injuries, compared with respective rates of 0.28 and 17.26 in 1965. Fatalities totaled 543; 5 more than in 1965. The total of 33.091 nonfatal injuries was 291 higher than in 1965. However, the larger number of disabilities was offset by the increased worktime in 1966. so that the fatality frequency was unchanged and the nonfatal frequency rate decreased from 1965.

In response to the implementation of a new schedule for iron ore fines in the International Maritime OrganizationÆs (IMO) International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code, improved measures for the management of moisture have been developed. In particular, prediction of cargo moisture allows management of iron ore fines within the supply?chain to facilitate the safe?shipping of iron ore fines.An ARIMA model, augmented to allow for shipment tonnage, has been developed to predict the moisture level from previous shipments of the same product. The model explains about 60 per cent of the moisture variance. It was found that inclusion of other available information, such as ore composition, train/rake assays and recent rainfall at port and mine, did not add to the predictive power of the model.CITATION:Everett, J E, Linden, D and Maney, P, 2013. The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis consists of the formation of long-chain hydrocarbons by passage of carbon monoxide-hydrogen mixtures over metal catalysts, usually based on iron, cobalt, nickel, or ruthenium, at temperatures in the range 180°-300° C., and at pressures of 1-15 atmospheres. Although the reaction has been known and studied for more than 20 years, the mechanism by which it occurs is still poorly understood. One approach to understanding is to consider the effect upon the course of the synthesis of variations in each of the important operating variables. Consideration of the experimental data pertaining to these variables may suggest an over-all picture describing the synthesis - a picture which, in turn, would have to be consistent with all the known facts. The first part of this paper will be concerned with such a consideration of operating variables; the second portion will discuss recent work pertaining to the role of metal carbides as intermediates in the synthesis.

In 1967, development of the Cyprus Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit began near Challis, ID. The first mining claims were staked on an intrusive rock out-crop. Exploration continued for 14 years. In 1978, the decision was made to develop the deposit. In Dec. 1980, approval was received for the environmental impact statement and facilities construction and waste rock removal began. By the middle of 1983, 126 Mt (139 million st) of rock had been removed and all facilities completed. Location The Thompson Creek project is located about 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Challis in Custer County, in south central Idaho. The mine and mill are situated between 2.2 and 2.6 km (7,217 and 8,530 ft) in elevation. The project is located in an isolated area. The application of remote sensing for environmental measurements is already being utilized. Aircraft mounted imaging spectroscopy has been utilized to evaluate areas of historical mining operations as well as active mine sites. To the extent that remote sensing can provide more sensitive, cost effective, and timely monitoring potential, the technology is of interest to the industry. Questions remain about the application and validation of the data and the availability of the technology in the private sector. This presentation will discuss some of the potential uses, benefits, and concerns related to remote sensing and efforts to monitor the technology's development.

The MANpower SUPport Program (MANSUPP), a part of the Mine Management Support System (MMSS), allows an underground coal mine site user to determine manpower requirements for production support work by considering ongoing operations and current mine conditions. The objective of MANSUPP is to plan a detailed manpower structure for a mine by incorporating a production schedule, condition-modified work standards and management preferences to predict required manhours for various activities, for example, belt moves. The program is written in Quattro Pro version 3.0 (Lotus 1-2-3 compatible) utilizing the command language, macro and formula capabilities.

Supplying ventilation in underground metal mines can be one of the most energy demanding services required to support production activities. Consequently, as energy, in the form of electricity or combustible fuels can be expensive and their unit cost is expected to increase, there is significant interest in reducing the overall demands of a mine?s ventilation system through such initiatives as controlling ventilation based upon demand and exploring other power alternatives to the current usage of the diesel engine in mobile mine vehicles. However, determining the benefit of any energy saving technology is complex and not universal applicable across the industry, consequently they have not been widely adopted. For these technologies to succeed they must be strategically applied based upon sound business cases. The intent of this paper is to provide information on some of the prospective control strategies and their potential impact on the power consumption related to supplying ventilation.

Natural fibers are attracting the interest of engineering sectors owing to specific advantages such as lightweight and lower cost as well as for their inherent condition of being renewable, biodegradable, recyclable and environmental correct material with respect to CO2 emission. The banana fiber is nowadays recognized by its mechanical properties. It is known that with the increase of fibers volume fraction the composite significant increases its tensile strength. This was obtained with amounts up to 30% in volume of banana fiber. However no higher volume of fibers was able to be molded in a composite plate until now. Thus the present work aims to study higher volumes of fiber in terms of the influence on the tensile strength of specimens prepared under 5 tons of pressure. The fibers were previously washed and dried in an oven at 60ºC, after that poured together with the epoxy resin and catalyst mixture in the metal molds bone-shaped, and pressured to ensure specimens quality. The tensile strength increased significantly with higher amounts of banana fiber incorporated in the epoxy matrix. This better performance can be directly related to the fracture obstacle imposed by the fibers as well as the type of cracks resulting from the fiber/matrix interaction.

Mining operations adopt a variety of measures to combat dust underground. These include ventilation systems, water sprays, physical barriers, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Respirators are a class of PPE that can provide clean particulate- free air to the users. Powered Air-Purifying Respirators (PAPRs), used commonly in medical and other sectors, are not prevalent in the mining industry. PAPRs use P100 filters that have 99.97% dust capture efficiency. We present our results from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations performed to understand the impact of a PAPR on airflow and dust particle concentration in the vicinity of a miner. These results show that donning PAPRs can lower the miners’ exposure to respirable coal dust in their workplace.

"The Efemçukuru underground mine in western Turkey is an intermediate sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit. The bulk of the mineral resources and all of the mineral reserves lie within the Kestanebeleni (KB) vein system. This system comprises four spatially-distinct mineralised zones: the south ore shoot (SOS), the middle ore shoot (MOS), the north ore shoot (NOS) and the KB north-west ore shoot. Production currently occurs only in the SOS, MOS and NOS zones. The gold mineralisation is very fine grained and occurs as free grains in quartz and carbonate, and as inclusions in sulfide minerals. Gold is recovered as part of a sulfide concentrate by flotation methods. Though hosted in the KB vein, the gold mineralisation is not evenly distributed within the veins. Definition of its occurrence is totally dependent on diamond drilling.Diamond drilling at Efemçukuru is done with its own equipment and staff, all managed by the mine geology group. The process over the mine’s six year production history incorporates continual improvement with an innovative approach by focusing on the following: drill team organisation career development and training product research and effective equipment management cost reduction planning and scheduling of development for drill stations.Over 40 000 metres of mostly BQ size core are drilled annually by three drill rigs at a cost approaching US$35/m.The planning and execution of the drilling pattern depends on the configuration of the ore shoot and the planned mining method. Ore extraction is mainly by drift and fill mining augmented by about 15 per cent longhole stoping. The drilling of a specific area is scheduled to be finished 3 to 8 months prior to mining. This scheduling is sufficient for short-term grade model updates and any needed changes to the planned development or stope sequencing prior to planned production from the stope area.CITATION:Arslan, N and Ozkayhan, M, 2017. In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems have come under growing scrutiny as a perceived mitigation to fuel and equipment price fluctuations, labour shortages and the need to move everincreasing volumes of material. Individual vendors and delivery organisations are now offering a sometimes confusing array of systems, particularly for the dig and dump side operations.One system does not suit all operations. This paper seeks to document the factors that should be considered in assessing the suitability of different IPCC systems, with a focus on dig side equipment layouts in particular. These factors include the productivity of the systems, interactions with the drill/blast and bench operation sequence, the ease of relocation, flexibility to changes in the reserve, scalability and compatibility with other elements of the system.

Ongoing development work on ultra-fine grinding for various applications at the Group?s concentrators has been conducted by Anglo Platinum over the last few years. Current potential applications for mainstream grinding and concentrate grinding are the subject of a group-wide research and development programme. The first 10 000-litre 2.6 MW IsaMill was jointly developed by Anglo Platinum, Xstrata Technology and Netszch for installation at the Western Limb Tailings Re-treatment project in Rustenburg, South Africa. The unit was commissioned in late 2003/early 2004, and has operated in an intermediate concentrate regrind application successfully since. This paper describes the operational performance to date, as compared with the original duty specifications and objectives. The first mainstream M10 000 IsaMill with a 3 MW drive will be operational in November2006 at the Potgietersrus Platinum (PPL) ?Platreef? Sandsloot Concentrator in South Africa?s Limpopo Province. In order to protect coal mine owners, operators, and lending institutions from potential environmental liabilities, responsible parties must maintain a thorough understanding of the environmental disposition of the property they control, and the ramifications of impending laws and regulations. The best way to accomplish this is to periodically conduct a Phase I Environmental Audit. The systematic approach of an audit will reveal areas of DOD compliance with SMCRA and EPA regulations which the coal owner and/or operator will be able to use to correct deficiencies and prevent the occurrence of conditions which could lead to permit block, fines, and ultimately reduced productivity.

The Norman B Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering, or the Department of Mining Engineering (the Department), at CanadaÆs University of British Columbia (UBC) is addressing the integration of sustainable development concepts into mining education and research on behalf of industry and society. Over the past decade, the DepartmentÆs education and research model has been evolving to incorporate collaborative and multidisciplinary strategies, where sustainability initiatives are taught in classes, supported in research and discussed in a voluntary collective of mostly graduate students û the Sustainability Working Group (SWG). The SWG has brought together a diverse array of disciplines from academia, industry, government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and mining communities. The operational mechanisms and structure of the SWG have enabled momentum to be gained through several multidisciplinary educational and research networking initiatives. It acts to attract new students with diverse backgrounds, foster innovative research, develop relationships and networks, and create the space to discuss progressive ideas and projects. The original cohort of SWG graduate students laid the foundation for sustainable research initiatives within the Department at UBC. Novel research has incorporated topics such as: community resilience, artisanal small-scale mining, sustainability indicators and corporate social responsibility, environmental assessment and impact benefit agreements and the recycling of waste. Propelled by the support of the Department and inspired by the works completed, a host of new graduate students have embarked on their research quests to integrate sustainability principles into their projects. Such projects include: social impacts and benefits of mining, artisanal small-scale mining, community health, the production and transport of mine pollutants, mine waste management, mineral process plant design and the evolution of community education and mine policy. This paper reports on the departmentÆs continuing research and development towards an understanding and evaluations of the ongoing contributions of mining to sustainable development.

The volume changes occurring during the reduction by hydrogen of single, high-grade hematite pellets under isothermal and non- isothermal conditions were investigated using a time-lapse photographic technique. The major cause of swelling during iso- thermal reduction at temperatures in the range 600-1000¦C, was the disruptive stresses set up during the transformation of hematite to mag- netite. The severity of the disruption was temperature dependent; the degree of swelling increased with increases in the reduction temp erature. Under non-isothermal reduction conditions, in which the pellet temperatures were increased at constant heating rates over the temperature range 500-1000¦C, minor swelling (6-8%) occurred in the initial stages of reduction followed by pellet contractions of up to 15% in the final reduction stages. The low initial swelling and high final pellet shrinkages were due to a com- bination of the temperature dependence of the swelling mechanism, and the sintering of fine pores in the reduced iron in the latter stages of reduction at higher temperatures.

This little sketch of the late Willet G. Miller, Provincial Geologist of Ontario, is intended to be neither a biography of his career nor a eulogy of his life. His biography has already been written in an incomparable manner by Mr. T. A. Rickard, his eulogy by Canon Cody. What more can be said of Dr. Miller than is summed up in the words of that great Canadian divine, Canon Cody, that he was "Big in body, big in heart, and, as we learned, big in brain." This article, then, will merely record a few personal reminiscences of the man himself, and while they are necessarily disjointed, they may at least serve to illustrate certain traits in his character which are not generally known or appreciated outside of the circle of his intimate friends. In the latter part of May in the year 1904, Willet G. Miller, with two? assistants, set out for the small village of Haileybury to begin his geological work in the area a few miles to the south which he was soon to name Cobalt. At that time the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario railway was not finished, although the right-of-way was cleared and partly graded. The nearest railway station was on the Canadian Pacific at the south end of lake Timiskaming, from which point the old steamer Meteor carried passengers and freight up the long, narrow and deep waters of lake Timiskaming, a very pleasant trip of some sixty miles. On this particular trip there was a fairly large crowd on board consisting of settlers going into the clay belt north of lake Timiskaming, of lumbermen, and of a few merchants and commercial travellers who were interested in the small business centres of Haileybury, New Liskeard and Ville Marie. Scarcely any attention was paid to the reports of the newly found silver deposits, although the daily papers had announced discoveries in the district six months before. As a matter of fact, the chief excitement on board was afforded by a moose, which, in swimming from the Ontario to the Quebec shore of the lake, crossed the bow of the boat, the captain steering to within a few yards of the terrified animal.

"This paper will describe a brief history of the method of characteristics as an accurate solution of the wave equation, and the author's experiences with the method of characteristics over a period of 30 years.As a result of the offshore pile driving activities associated with the development of the North Sea oil fields in the 1970's, two Dutch companies initiated extensive research efforts. Heerema started to research the dynamic behavior of soil during driving and HBG (Hollandsche Seton Groep) extended the method of characteristics with a straightforward theoretical solution for the shaft friction along a pile.The research institute TNO started the development of the wave equation program TNOWAVE in the late 1970's based on HBG's friction model extension for the method of characteristics. Today the program has a worldwide application in the field of pile testing. This paper will describe its development and application over time and its relation to today's applications for driveability studies for impact hammers (PDPWAVE) and vibratory hammers (VDPWAVE), signal matching for Dynamic Load Testing (DL TWAVE), Pile Integrity Testing signal matching (SITWAVE), and Statnamic simulation (STNWAVE).The paper will highlight that these developments have been the result of multi-disciplinary and multi-national efforts and encourage geotechnical engineers to seek further developments of the wave equation program in a similar manner. Finally, the paper will indicate some areas where such further developments are required."

Rapid drifting enables quicker access to orebodies, higher productivity rates and a resultant reduction in activity costs. Increased advance rates, by examination of the key components (face preparation and drilling, hole loading and blasting, scaling, mucking and support installation) in the development cycle, and optimizing these processes is a high priority for research in the Canadian mining industry. Support installation time alone is typically 36 to 46% of the total development cycle time. A reduction in support installation time or techniques and alternative scaling strategies could result in significant gains in drift development advance rates. Support Staging and hydroscaling within the drift cycle could offer alternative drift development sequences that could reduce the overall cycle time. MIRARCO?s research into the support and hydroscaling processes for rapid drift development also suggests that there are many other factors (e.g. mine ventilation services) that have a significant impact on the rate of advance. These factors should be considered to promote and manage safe and rapid drift development. Constraints to the rapid drift development processes can only be overcome by sound construction management practices. In other words, the goals of rapid drifting can be achieved by the implementation of contractor-type construction management. This paper examines various constraints and processes affecting rapid drift development and draws attention to other factors affecting safe rapid drift development.

The Merlin Zone, a 2008 high-grade Mo-Re discovery, is a part of the Mount Dore Deposit in the Eastern Succession of the Mount Isa Inlier in Queensland, Australia. Hosted by carbonaceous metapelites and phyllites, the Merlin mineralisation comprises molybdenite veins, breccia infillings, stylolitic fracture fillings, and disseminations. Because rhenium is geochemically similar to molybdenum and commonly associated with it, global production of rhenium has been mostly a by-product of molybdenum refining. The high-grade rhenium in the Merlin Zone is an exciting discovery that is expected to become a direct source of rhenium. At the time of discovery, quality assurance (QA) procedures for rhenium were not in place at the Merlin Zone; therefore, they needed to be developed.The Merlin Zone was discovered using reverse circulation drilling, which led to concerns about molybdenite loss due to poor sample recovery. The twinning of the discovery hole with diamond core demonstrated a two-fold increase in molybdenum grade over several tens of metres. Consequently, the resources of the Merlin Zone were defined using assays from diamond drill core.Early analytical work, which was initially done only for molybdenum, comprised geochemical analysis with an aqua regia digestion, which have poor precision and can be biased low. Although initial testing for rhenium used similar procedures to those for molybdenum, a scarcity of commercial rhenium reference materials led to a validation process using neutron activation analyses and different digestions. This resulted in introduction of four-acid digestion assays, development of matrix-matched reference materials, and improvements to the quality of molybdenum and rhenium assays for reporting resources. Coarse and pulp duplicates were used to check for sampling bias and to ensure that levels of precision were adequate for the style of mineralisation and analytical methods. In addition, the direct and consistent geochemical correlation between molybdenum and rhenium provided another method for checking analyses.

Overexcavation and ground loss events during pressurized-face TBMadvance in soft ground can result in unplanned deformations above the tunnel and damage to existing infrastructure. Successfully managing the risk of this occurring is crucial for any project in an urban area to proceed. Common risk management approaches include a combination of establishing suitable ranges of TBM operational parameters and using geotechnical instrumentation for deformation monitoring. Another risk management tool is material flow reconciliation, which varies depending on the specified mining method and the equipment choices by the contractor. This paper compares recent and ongoing projects in the Pacific Northwest regarding overexcavation risk management.
