IN the early part of the last century textile fabric was used for the filtration of products of combustion and lampblack was obtained by passing smoke through a series of canvas bags. Natural draft was, used to draw and force the smoke through the bags. About 1850 bag filtration was used for collecting zinc oxide. Around 1876 it was introduced for collecting the fume from lead-ore hearth smelting in. Missouri. Shortly afterward it was used, first at Portland, Me., and later at Canon City, Colo., for the collection and production of zinc-lead pigment in treating mixed zinc-lead sulphides. In 1890 the Globe Smelting & Refining Co., at Denver, Colo., installed a bag house containing 1,458 bags for the recovery of fume from silver-lead blast furnaces. This installation was too small to handle all of the gases and was increased to approximately 2,300 bags. . In 1900 the number of bags was again increased, making a total of approximately 2,800: The usual difficulties incident to new installations were encountered, but they were gradually overcome and the bag house became accepted as standard practice for this class of smelting. As all of the bag houses built since have followed the general lines of the Globe installation, a short description may be of interest. The general construction of the Globe bag house is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The building is 149 ft. 8 in. long by 67 ft. 4 in. wide and 40 ft. 2 in. high from the basement floor to the eaves of the roof, having brick walls 26 in. thick from the foundation up to the thimble floor, from there an 18-in. wall for 16 ft. and a 13-in. wall from this point to the top, a distance of 14 ft. 2 in. Additional stiffening is given to the walls above the basement by pilasters located every 16 ft. The end-wall construction is similar to that of the side walls with the exception of the spacing of the pilasters, which is somewhat greater. The roof is made of corrugated iron laid on 1-in. boards and supported by a timber frame work spaced 16 ft. apart resting on the basement partition walls. On top is a louver running the

The Mariposa estate, a grant made by the Mexican Government to Juan 13. Alvarado, during the time when California was still under the dominion of Mexico, was purchased in 1847 by J. C. Fremont, and the United States patent issued to him in 1856. By sale, or its equivalent, money advanced, the property came into the hands of the Mariposa Company, June 25th, 1863, and through a varied existence of work and temporary inactivity, has as yet been kept as an undivided property, and rests at present with the Mariposa Land and Mining Company of California. I pass over this period of 15 years without giving the history of the ups and downs of the estate, partly because it is familiar to many, and also because I think in such a case this paper would assume too much the character of a narrative. The estate is situated in Mariposa County, California, about 170 miles southeast of San Francisco. It begins in lat. 37' 26' 38'' north, and long. 119' 55' west, and runs 6 miles north; thence 69 miles west; thence 5 miles northwesterly towards the Merced River; thence 84 miles southerly; thence 3 miles easterly; thence 1 mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 2 miles southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 1 mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 1 mile northerly, and thence 2 miles easterly to the place of the beginning; embracing 44,387 acres (70 sq. miles) more or less. To describe this vast estate in detail as to its full geology, its numerous quartz veins, its many facilities to exploit them and work them by cheap methods, would lead me further than I intend to go at present, and I will content myself to describe the latest workings of the company and its immediate field of operations. As long ago as 1860 the late Dr. Adelberg advised the running of an adit from the northwestern edge of the estate at Benton Mills 011 the Mereed River. Major diamond pipes discovered in Western Australia in the late-1970s exhibited a number of unique features that not only resulted in Australia becoming the largest diamond producer in the world in volume terms by 1986 but also changed geological thinking on the primary occurrence of diamond. They were: - lamproite is an alternative primary diamond host to kimberlite. - the extremely high mean grade of the Argyle lamproite pipe at 5 ct per tonne. - the tectonic setting of the lamproite pipes in mobile zones mar- ginal to the Kimberley Craton in contrast to the traditional African setting within stable cratons. Diamond was one of the earliest economic minerals discovered in Australia but 128 years elapsed between its first recognition and the first Australian economic pipe discovery (Argyle). During that period some 200,000 ct of alluvial diamonds were mined in Australia (mostly in New South Wales), but such alluvial output is insignificant on the world scene where annual production today runs at 95 million ct of natural stones some 76010 of which comes from primary pipe sources such as Argyle which alone produces 30 million ct per annum. Of particular significance therefore is the geological nature of the primary diamond source rocks in Australia. The Argyle and Ellendale Pipes are lamproites, differing from kimberlite in their mineralogy and geochemistry, and characterised by the presence of typical lamproite minerals such as leucite, priderite, potassic richterite, and the abnormally high content of chemical elements incompatible with ultramafic rocks. Ion elutriation was used to extract silver cyanide complexes and free cyanide from aqueous streams containing up to 10 ppm silver and 5 ppm free cyanide. Screening tests selected nine of 350 different surfactants for further, larger scale experiments. The screening procedure used 0.1 g of each of the surfactants in 300 mL of synthetic wastewater. Air was sparged into the test cell at 50 cc/min. The foam was refluxed during the tests and was not sampled. Samples of the solution were taken at specified intervals and analyzed by wet chemical methods for free cyanide and by atomic absorption for silver content. The most effective surfactants lowered the silver and free cyanide concentrations to less than 0.5 ppm in 1 h or less. These surfactants were quaternary amine salts with one long chain (C12-C18) organic group and three methyl groups. Experiments using 3 L batches of wastewater or an ion elutriation cell continuously fed with solution draining from an inactive heap leach operation confirmed the results from the screening tests.

ZnO microprisms in thin film form were produced by the low cost spray pyrolysis technique at a substrate temperature of 350 ± 5 °C on glass substrates. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to explore morphology and composition of the films respectively. The films were found to be oxygen rich and contain chlorine. ImageJ software was used to analyze the size of the prisms, where the diameter and length of the microprisms were estimated.

It was shown previously that chalcopyrite could be floated without using a collector when the ore samples were treated with small amounts of sodium sulfide (Na2S). The role of this reducing agent was considered to be one of a cleaning agent to remove the hydrophilic surface oxidation products. It was later found, however, that the collectorless flotation could be obtained only under slightly oxidizing conditions. This might suggest that collectorless flotation is not due to the clean surface but to the elemental sulfur which may be present as an incipient oxidation product. Therefore, a search for the presence of elemental sulfur has been made by means of ESCA, mass spectrometry, and solvent extraction followed by W spectrophotometric analysis. On the basis of these results, the mechanisms of collectorless flotation are discussed.

Open-pit mines are constructed in materials characterized by the complete range of geologic materials from the most recent alluvial sediments to hard intact crystalline rock. The determination of stable slopes in recent alluvium is in the realm of soil mechanics, an established engineering discipline, well founded on theoretical development and years of substantiating experience. The analytical tools of the soils engineer are chiefly derived from continuum mechanics wherein load-deformation response is governed by mass properties of the substance. At the other end of the spectrum, slopes in hard unweathered rock can generally be analyzed in a straightforward manner by the methods of discontinuum mechanics wherein the properties and orientations of joints control the response of the material. This approach is exemplified by the classical work of Terzaghi (1962). In between these two extremes is a gray area of material types which are composed of stiff soil and incompetent rock. This area is of importance to the mining engineer, since a large portion of open-pit mines is excavated wholly or in part into incompetent rock. This paper describes an approach to pit slope design in incompetent rock in which the material behaves essentially as a continuum. A wide range of geologic materials from stiff soil to poorly indurated sandstone and shale to crushed or weathered crystalline rock appear to fit in this category. These materials all possess certain mechanical properties which must be accounted for in a realistic assessment of slope stability. These properties include nonlinearity, s tress -dependency, and inelasticity. Further considerations involve residual stresses and time-dependent seepage pressures where groundwa.ter is present.

Companhia Paraibuna de Metais (CPM) is presently pursuing a zinc production expansion project. Besides increasing production, the goal of the project is to address existing problems while providing a platform for a proposed twofold increase in production in 2003/2004. Therefore, the current expansion strategy was formulated to address present and future requirements. Computer simulation modeling and full scale plant testing are being used to generate data to optimize the operating conditions and to perform a sensitivity analysis. The initial phase of the project, which will boost CPM's capacity to 86,000 t/y of marketable zinc, is to be completed in September 2000.

We present an algorithm to integrate the uncertainties of mean activity rate and magnitude cumulative distribution function in the interval estimation of the primary seismic hazard parameters: the exceedance probability and the mean return period. The algorithm is applicable for both the parametric and nonparametric modeling of magnitude distribution. When the Gutenberg-Richter relation-based parametric model of magnitude distribution is used, the interval estimation of its parameters is based on the asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimators. When the nonparametric kernel estimation of magnitude distribution is used, we apply the iterated bias-corrected and accelerated method for the interval estimation, based on the smoothed bootstrap and second-order bootstrap samples. Previous studies indicated that the uncertainty of mean activity rate significantly affects the interval estimates of hazard functions only when the activity rate is low and the inference period is not long (Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki 2017). With increasing mean activity rate, the uncertainty of magnitude distribution dominates over the uncertainty of mean activity rate in the aggregated uncertainty of the hazard functions. The provided algorithm is generic and can be applied to capture the uncertainty of any multiparameter function from the uncertainties of its parameters. Here we present a further development of the algorithm developed by Orlecka-Sikora & Lasocki (2017) by presenting its implementation in the Traffic Light System approach. As an example of use, we present the confidence intervals estimation of hazard parameters for the datasets related to induced seismicity accompanying underground exploitation of copper ore in the Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD) in Poland. The algorithm is under implementation to the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/) - an IT platform that provides access to integrated research infrastructures of the Thematic Core Service of Anthropogenic Hazards (TCS AH) of EPOS (European Plate Observing System). The algorithm is also a component of the pilot developed within the EPOS SP project (No 871121), which aims to strengthen the interaction with the private sector and the added value for society. The pilot demonstrates the potential of the IS-EPOS platform software applications for the technology-related probabilistic assessment of time-dependent seismic hazard. The pilot supports a Traffic Light System approach. The current seismic hazard is compared to threshold values based on the exceedance probability for a given magnitude.

A GREAT deal of time and energy is now being devoted to the study of post-war reconstruction and rehabilitation, in spite of the fact that as yet we have not won the war in which we are presently engaged. If you feel that the study of post-war problems takes our thought away from the problem immediately before us, you may well query, "Well! What has all that to do with winning the war, our most urgent problem today?" The answer has been given by Principal James of McGill University, Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Reconstruction: "Reconstruction is something which must be thought of in advance, partly for the purpose of recognizing exactly the influence of war-time activities, controls, and regulations on the post-war Canadian scene. Many people are acutely interested in this great problem. It is not that they are not interested in the war itself, or epochal events that are taking place from day to day. They have a vision of that future which they hope will be Canada's, and this vision inspires them to even greater efforts at the present time". The trend of events would indicate that changes, economic and industrial, after this war will be greatly out of line with those that followed previous wars in history, for the present struggle has involved every nation in the world. In the peace that will come, every engineer will have a task in bringing the most desirable order out of the most distressing chaos. We certainly are living in a changing world; we are witnessing geo-graphical and economic readjustments that no other generation in world's history has ever witnessed. And there is an opinion gaining strength in our Dominion, as in other lands, that after this war we shall live in a world in which our process of thinking and our very way of life will have to undergo drastic changes to cope with the new order of things. Sadly our world of today has had to revise the sublime vision that nation shall not lift up sword against nation, while salvage operations continue to beat ploughshares into tanks and the peaceful pruning-hook into a weapon for the deviltry of the commando.

This report compares the quality of zirconium metal prepared by batch reduction of zirconium tetrachloride by (1) sodium, (2) magnesium, and (3) mixtures of sodium and magnesium. Criteria for quality are based on chemical analyses and hardness testing of zirconium arc-melted from sponge. The best quality zirconium with respect to low oxygen content and hardness numbers was prepared by reaction of zirconium tetrachloride with a mixture of sodium and magnesium. It was found that this reaction could be successfully carried out by two methods: (1) addition of sodium and magnesium before the initial reaction and (2) periodic injection of sodium during reaction of zirconium tetrachloride with magnesium. The largest quantity of metal was found to be recovered from experiments in which a mixture of sodium and magnesium was used. Magnesium appeared to be a better reductant than sodium because magnesium-reduced zirconium contained less oxygen and exhibited lower hardness numbers than sodium-reduced metal.

As operações de amostragem de qualquer atividade que necessite de controle de qualidade são fundamentais tanto para fins de garantia da qualidade quanto para efeito comercial dos produtos. Na mineração de ferro não é diferente. Uma amostragem que carregue um vício de 0,20% no teor de Fe (%) pode representar uma perda de faturamento de aproximadamente US$226 mil para cada milhão de toneladas comercializadas aos preços atuais. Para fazer um bom plano de amostragem é necessário conhecer o grau de heterogeneidade ou variação de qualidade (sW) do minério a ser amostrado. Segundo Pierre Maurice Gy, um dos mais renomados especialistas em amostragem de minérios em geral, a forma mais indicada para estimar a sW é o método do variograma. Neste trabalho usamos a metodologia do variograma, com base na Norma Técnica ABNT ISO 3084:2003, para estimar a sW do minério tipo Sinter Feed produzido na Mina de Serra Azul da ArcelorMittal.

This letter originated in Rangoon, Burma, and reads in part: "Rest assured, if your goodselves see with us eye to eye, sure as certain we should get the business". I don't plan to give anybody "the business" today, but you can rest assured that if some of "you goodselves see with me eye to eye" on what I am about to discuss, I would be most pleased. My talk with you today will discuss the Federal Corporate income tax and its effect on our lives as engineers. In the-engineering-construction business we are faced with all the usual form of taxation which includes such items as sales tax, use tax, school tax, contractor; gross receipt tax, import duties and excise taxes, severance taxes, etc, adinfinutum.

With the present-day trend of rising labour costs and a lowering of production efficiency of workmen, it has become imperative that every effort be made to use manpower to the greatest advantage and to mechanize mining as much as possible. During the past few years this trend has gained much prominence in the Porcupine camp. In view of this, the executive of the Porcupine Branch considered that the Mechanical Movement of Muck would be a very timely subject for a Symposium. Accordingly a Committee was formed, with A. K. Douglass, Mine Superintendent for Delnite Mines, Ltd., as Chairman, and the Symposium was held in the Auditorium of the McIntyre Community Building, Schumacher, on March 25th last. Papers dealing with shovel loader and mechanical scraper operation at six of the larger mines of the camp were presented and discussed, and a tabulation was prepared giving data on the machines in operation at a total of eleven mines. The papers and tabulation, reproduced below, will doubtless be of considerable interest to operators of mines in all parts of Canada.

Over the past quarter of a century, the success of the hydrocyclone as a classifier in closed circuit grinding installations has permitted the introduction of the cyclone into virtually all fields of wet industrial processing. Research and experience gained in these applications have established the optimum cyclone sizes and designs necessary to provide the required performance. Although cyclones are used in widely diverse liquid-solid applications, their use for ultrafine separation clearly demonstrates the importance of a familiarity with previous case studies. Krebs Engineers is firmly dedicated to serving the process industry and has acquired the unsurpassed knowledge and experience to handle all types of separations and classification problems. Cyclones have been used for a number of applications to make what might be considered fine separations. A typical example is in an iron ore grinding circuit where a 381 mm diameter cyclone will classify an overflow product to 85% -44 micron. There is no question that this is a fine separation, but still finer separations are possible, and these are known as ultrafine separations.

Investigations of the Mineragraphic Section; Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, have included most of the known stannite-bearing ores in Australia, and have revealed several new occurrences of this relatively uncommon mineral. They provide information about its paragenesis, and its possible effect on tin recovery, that may be of general interest.Several of the investigations used in the preparation of this paper, were made in the first instance by pr. F. L. Stillwell or in collaboration with him.CASSITERITE-SULPHIDE ORES IN NORTH-WEST- TASMANIA Stannite is a minor component of most of the cassiterite sulphide ores of north-western Tasmania. These include the orebodies of Mount Bischoff, the Cleveland mine, Moina, the Stanley River district, Renison Bell, and the Heemskirk-Zeehan district, and form a well defined metallogenetic provence which is related to the Devonian granites of this part of Tasmania.In these ores mineralisation began. with deposition of cassiterite, a little wolfram, and quartz, topaz and tourmaline. With falling temperature, deposition of cassiterite ceased and arsenopy-rite, pyrite, and especially pyrrhotite, formed in abundance, tending to give massive sulphide ore. A little chalcopyrite; stannite, sphalerite and native bismuth accompanied the pyrrhotite. Deposition of quartz ceased after the pyrrhotite, was formed, and the later-formed nonsulphide gangue consists chiefly of carbonates and fluorite. With, the advent of the carbonates the pyrrhotite was altered to fine-gained intergrowths of marcasite and pyrite. Excess iron from the pyrrhotite entered the intergrown carbonate, or was precipitated as magnetite. Some solution of the cassiterite occurred at this stage, the tin being redeposited chiefly as stimnite replacement rims around the residual cassitellrite grains. Ventilation has long been the primary means of controlling methane emissions in underground coal mines. However, as mining has progressed into gassier areas of U.S. coal basins, supplemental means of methane control have become of interest, if not a necessity, for continued safe and productive mining operations. This paper describes the history and technology of methane drainage in the United States and other countries. The methane drainage technology developed in European countries is a valuable resource since their longer history of mining has already forced mine operators to deal with methane emission problems only now being experienced in the United States. Methods for assessing the need for methane drainage and the data required for planning and implementing an appropriate system are reviewed. The effectiveness of the various technologies for reducing methane emissions underground and/or the in-place gas content of individual coalbeds is illustrated with case studies. In addition to the safety and productivity gains to be realized from methane drainage systems, the potential for commercialization of coalbed methane is discussed.

Ventilation-pressure surveys are required to determine the rates of pressure losses in various parts of mine-airway systems. These may be determined directly by differential pressure measurements or deduced from absolute pressure measurements, Despite the confusion caused by its inverted nonlinear scale, the altimeter has special application to pressure surveys in mines in which only small differences in elevation are involved, as is true for most of our large bituminous-coal mines in these, the judicious use of information obtained by pressure surveying can result in greatly improved working conditions as regards health and safety and, in many instances, can yield large financial returns. The main purposes of this report are to discuss methods of using altimeters for pressure surveys and to present the particular methods of making surveys and calculating the results of surveys used by the Mine Ventilation Section of the Bureau of Mines.
