Stirred milling of laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a Netzsch LME4 stirred mill on a siliceous goethitic (SG) nickel laterite sample (-2000 µm particle size) to evaluate the effect of operating conditions such as stirrer speed, grinding time, pH, solid content, water salinity and charge volume. The target was to produce a -38 µm fraction in the milling product with high nickel recovery and grade. Addition of dispersant (sodium hexametaphosphate) was also optimized with respect to the rheology of the slurry. In terms of stress intensity, the optimum grinding conditions for selective size reduction were: 1000 rpm, 50 per cent charge volume. At higher stress intensity (2000 rpm), Ni recovery in the -38 µm product was higher, but Ni grade was low, due to the breakage of the harder siliceous particles. Decreasing the yield stress by modifying slurry pH or adding dispersant improved the rheological properties of the pulp, but had no great influence on Ni upgrade in the fine product. Modifying water salinity by adding 2 M NaCl had also little effect. The breakage of the +38 µm particles in the feed determined Ni upgrade greatly. Ni grade in the -38 µm product decreased with grinding time, suggesting that the Ni-bearing minerals break first, while the harder siliceous minerals have a lower breakage rate. The breakage rates with respect to sample mass for Ni, Mg and Si indicate that: Mg > Ni > Mass > Si. The optimum grinding time for the highest Ni upgrade was 0.25 min. The Ni grade increased from 0.88 per cent to 1.35 per cent (upgrade 54 per cent), with 24 per cent Ni recovery. Keywords: fine grinding, stirred media mill, nickel laterite, slurry rheology

"In order to investigate the stability of embankment on soft subgrade improved by T-shaped deep mixed column composite foundation, the internal forces and failure modes of columns were analyzed on the shape of critical slip surface and the displacement fields of composite foundation through strength reduction method of three dimensional numerical simulation. Then comparison between T-shaped and conventional deep mixed column composite foundation were conducted. The simulation results indicate that the stability analysis was overestimated by limit equilibrium methods. Piles within the slope shoulder provide great resistance slide effect through the vertical bearing capacity, while the piles nearby slope shoulder and outside slope shoulder providing great moment to resistant slip. The embankment stability of T-shaped deep mixed column composite foundation is higher than that of conventional deep mixed column composite foundation while cost less cement and construction time.INTRODUCTIONThe soft soil has many unfavorable project properties such as high compressibility, low strength, and high water component. Embankment built on the soft soil will face subsidence, horizontal displacement and stability problems. Cement-soil deep mixed column composite foundation is more commonly used as a method for construction of embankment on soft ground [1-2]. For the existing problems of China's current cement-soil pile (wet jet mixing pile), including strength uneven, effective treatment with shallow depth and high cost, a new technique, T-shaped bidirectional deep mixed column, is introduced [3]. An automatic expanding mixing blade was developed by Liu et al. shown in Figure. 1, to install TDM columns [4].T-shaped deep mixed (TDM) column combines bi-directional deep mixing technique and T-shaped deep mixing technique: ?Using concentric biaxial drill pipe, opposite rotational direction of the blade on the inner drill pipe and the outer drill pipe. By squeezing action of the blade on the outer drill pipe, forward and reverse rotation of the blades bidirectional mixing at the same time, blocking the way to take the grout, the uniformity of cement mixing is improved. ?Scalable stirring blades, which can be stretched for two different radius at any depth below ground, expand cross-section of the upper pile (enlarged head), forming expanding cross-section within the upper part of a certain depth which is similar to the shape of nail. As a new composite foundation, T-shaped mixing pile composite foundation is widely applied. However, studies on the stability of T-shaped column treated soft subgrade are rare in the research. So the stability study on T-shaped column composite foundation under embankment for guiding the design and construction has important significance."

"Stream-based microfluidic solvent extraction offers a novel alternative to bulk-scale mixer-settler operations. However present maximum throughputs are restrictive and there are engineering challenges that need to be overcome before the technology is robust. This is especially the case for mineral processing, where circuits must be able to handle variable feed streams with long retention times and where maintenance should be minimized. This paper highlights research directed at investigating and evaluating these challenges for actual mineral leach solutions of metal ions. Molecular and particulate channel fouling is discussed. Most extraction systems studied to date show no effects that would preclude use of the technology. For rare earth elements (REE) with fast extraction rates, scale-up of volumetric throughput to 100 L/h using suitable arrays of channels, microfluidic chips and modules is shown to be achievable using a small contactor (approx. 2 m3) platform. This requires only 2–3 % of the typical aqueous phase inventory and residence time used in an equivalent mixer-settler. For a circuit with 100 contactors, the overall residence time would be less than 1 h, using an aqueous inventory of 40 L.INTRODUCTIONHydrometallurgy is of pivotal importance in many mineral processing circuits around the world, with liquid-liquid solvent extraction (SX) a key step in the separation of many base metals (e.g. Cu and Ni), radioisotopes, precious metals, and the ‘technology’ metals, such as rare earth elements (REEs) (Ritcey & Ashbrook, 1979). The standard equipment for SX in mineral processing is the mixer-settler, in which liquid dispersions are created, by agitation, to increase the surface-to-bulk ratio and, thus increase the mass transfer rate between the liquid phases. In stream-based microfluidic SX (microSX), these high surface-to-volume ratios are achieved by contacting microscopic streams (Ciceri, Perera, & Stevens, 2014), rather than forming small droplets, so that phase disengagement can be accelerated (essentially instantaneous via branching of the two streams of liquid at a channel junction). MicroSX is profoundly different from bulk mixer-settler SX operations and offers exciting opportunities for processing hydrometallurgy solutions (Kriel, Holzner, Grant, Ash, Woollam, Ralston, & Priest, 2015; Priest, Zhou, Klink, Sedev, & Ralston, 2012). Nonetheless, the advantages of using microfluidic environments are presently balanced by very significant challenges relating to throughput, process control, coupling of stages, flow stability, and fouling. If these challenges can be met using smart chip designs, process control and clever engineering, high-value/low-volume SX processes stand to benefit greatly."

"A REVIEW OF MINERAL DISCOVERIES IN CANADA, and in particular the Canadian Shield, using the physical aspects of overburden reveals a trend in the art of exploration. At an early time of exploration (1847-1954), float and heavy clasts were used successfully to find ore deposits with little knowledge of Quaternary environments. At a later time (1955 to present) , use of Quaternary rock-units for sampling have made possible tracing indicator trains of float, heavy clasts and other ore-type clasts to the source bedrock. The basal till of retreat ice is now recognized as a1l favourable sampling environment and as such has been used to successfully discover hidden orebodies. The esker massive gravel is beginning to be recognized as a favourable environment and use of it has met with technical success. An understanding of those changes that have taken place during the transportation of the material and after its deposition is essential to proper sampling and treatment of the samples from the basal till and the esker massive gravel. Use of float and heavy clasts in search of orebodies is continuing in present-day exploration on the Shield. Lessons learned from it are being incorporated into exploration using favourable Quaternary rock-units for sampling. Hence, both subjects have a need for review and are discussed in this paper."

"Scandium oxide can be recovered as a by-product from process streams in a number of chemical and metallurgical plants including TiO2 sulphate pigment, Ni/Co laterite, zirconium oxychloride and uranium operations. The feed materials available for processing can be either mid or end of process streams containing many species in solution. This paper describes the strategies available to limit coextraction of elements into scandium containing streams from TiO2 pigment production and the removal of these elements to deliver high purity scandium oxide.A critical part of process development is to work within the constraints of the main process in terms of introducing new unit processes and producing minimal additional process intermediates and residues. This requires flexibility in designing flowsheets and plants to find novel process routes that avoid production of intermediates and/or the introduction of reagents that can compromise the main process operations.Bloom Energy has developed novel solvent extraction processes for the extraction and refining of scandium oxide that minimise impacts on core process streams within TiO2 pigment plants. The additional unit processes are designed to have minimal contact with pigment plant process streams to produce a concentrate that is refined to nominal 3N purity scandium oxide in a simple, small scale commercial plant."

A pilot plant campaign has been conducted by Sherritt Technologies in support of Eldorado Gold Corporation’s evaluation of pressure oxidation technology for the treatment of refractory gold concentrates from the Certej deposit in Romania. Four separate concentrates, containing 3.5 to 5.4 g/t Au, 13.0 to 14.5% S2- and 12.0 to 32.5 g/t Ag, were tested in the eight-day campaign. The major gold-bearing mineral was pyrite. Preliminary batch tests indicated that gold extraction from the oxidized concentrates in subsequent cyanide leaching was adversely affected by the presence of organic carbon in the pressure oxidation feed when chloride in solution was at an elevated level. As such, the process conditions that were tested during the pilot plant operation were selected to either counteract the negative impact of the organic carbon, or to deactivate it during pressure oxidation. Both process routes proved feasible, yielding gold extraction of 95 to 98% in cyanide leaching of the oxidized concentrates. Silver extraction was typically in the range of 80 to 90%, provided that the oxidized concentrates were also processed in a lime boil step prior to cyanide leaching.

The mining industry is constantly in a state of flux -boom or bust; mine openings and closings. Part of the reason is the nature of ore deposits -they are there or they are not. Once they are mined, they are reclaimed and the move is on to the next deposit. Risks are usually high, and payoffs can be great or not so great. Many factors go into making a property payoff, and mining companies are continually searching for ways to remain profitable as long as possible. Computers and the people who can make them work are one of the ways available to improve productivity and ensure this happens. Computers have been used in the mining industry for the last 30 years (and more in a few cases). During the past 10 years, the explosion of micro-computing has changed how many mining companies do their work.

Together with Sociedad Punta del Cobre S.A. (Pucobre) and Orica, we are carrying out a study of alternatives for methodology of excavation in Slot Up Raises from actually built with Blind Hole (BH) to drilling and blasting (DB) methodology. The study is part of the permanent search for innovation, the use of technology and the reduction of mine operation costs. This application aims to optimize the Sub Level Stoping method, which has historically been exploited at Pucobre. Using a new variant of the method “Open Stoping”, through the initial development of ascending blind raises using a pilot drilling of a bore hole, with the objective of eliminating the upper level in order to excavate the free face opening. This industrial test aims to replace the mechanized BH Up Raise of 1.5m (4.9 ft.) in diameter and 30m (98.4 ft.) high, with a Up Slot Raise considering two separate blasting events, using different technological enablers, as detailed below: accuracy drilling with relief holes of 254mm (10 in.) diameter, high viscosity bulk emulsion, wireless initiation system and high-strength injectable bulk resin. Considering the importance of the success of this application, a DB diagram was defined to allow the opening of the up raise in two blasting events, separated by intermediate stemming deck located at the same level at a height of 15m (49.2 ft.) from the collar, using high-strength injectable resin. The first blasting event considers the first section from the collar to the first 15m (49.2 ft.), using wired electronic initiation that is detonated on the first day. A second event blasts the section from 16.5 to 30m (54.1 to 98.4 ft.), using a wireless initiation system, as, it has no physical connection, is blasted on the second day after the extraction of the material resulting from the first event. For greater precision, the design of the explosive charge configuration and initiation sequence is made, adjusted to the measurements of trajectory deviations of the actual ground drilling and is also considered for the control of the explosive charge configuration with high viscosity bulk emulsion. This application improves the profitability of the mining business by generating savings through the change of Blind Hole methodology, estimating a savings of more than 75% per Up Slot Raise

LKAB operates two underground mines in Kiruna and Malmberget, Sweden. Blast furnace pellet is the main product and makes up 70 per cent of total production. The orebodies are hosted by 1910 - 1860 Ma old volcanic rocks. The host rocks and the ores were affected by the Svecokarelian orogeny for 1890 - 1860 Ma ago. The deposit belongs to the Kiruna type apatite-rich iron ore. Magnetite is the main ore mineral but haematite is the dominant ore mineral in some orebodies in the western part of the deposit. Large-scale sublevel caving is the dominant mining method. Three main haulage levels are in operation at present. The ore boundaries and quality can be detected by geophysical logging resulting in reduced waste dilution and subsequent grade reduction. The susceptibility measurements have been used in the magnetite ore since 1991 and gamma-gamma measurements in the haematite ore since 1998. The mining scale has increased during the last 20 years but diamond drilling has remained at approximately 18 000 drilling metres per year. Uncertainties in the ore constructions can lead to unexpected cost increases, ore loss and dilution. The ore boundaries are evaluated with percussion drill holes using in-hole geophysics to achieve satisfactory geological knowledge. The probes are calibrated in all currently mined orebodies. The correlation between core sample assays and measured susceptibility and gamma-gamma values is strong. The cost to determine the ore boundary by percussion drilling with in-hole geophysics is two-thirds lower, and productivity is six times higher compared to diamond drilling. The measurements are made by geotechnicians and the interpretations by a geologist. The results are transferred to a database and presented three dimensionally as holes with iron grade intervals on mine maps. The interpreted holes are used by the geologist in various ways in the geological modelling. Layout planning uses the measurements as a tool to place the drifts at the correct distance from the ore contact especially in the longitudinal sublevel caving and the production hole planning to optimise the final length of the cross-cuts and drifts for best ore recovery.

This is one of a series of reports being published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs at various mines throughout the United States. Including the Holden mine in this series is particularly appropriate at this time. The mine was operated on a low-cost, large-scale production basis to compensate for low-grade ore. Even with the best conditions and the most efficient methods, the margin of profit was small. Under the present situation of rising costs and lowering metal prices, the profit margin vanished. On June 28, 1957, the mine operations ceased; therefore, this report can review the entire life span of the mine.

Asgco’s design of the Arrowhead Ceramic Lagging provides solutions to problems experienced with conveyor belt slippage around the drive pulley and severe wear problems on snub and bend pulleys. Asgco has developed a range of pulley lagging from ceramic, drive rubber and non-drive rubber lagging that is available in abrasion-resistant SBR and MSHA grade rubber for conveyor pulleys from slow belts all the way through to high-speed, high load belts. O desenvolvimento de materiais renováveis e biodegradáveis é uma vertente que almeja a diminuição dos custos e dos impactos ambientais. Nesse âmbito, o presente trabalho visa o desenvolvimento de novos materiais, fabricados com fibras vegetais e que possam substituir outros que são derivados do petróleo. Fibras vegetais foram utilizadas e devidamente modificadas por mercerização e acetilação com o intuito de produzir materiais com compatibilidade química. Foram obtidos, nesse trabalho, compósitos de polietileno reciclado reforçados com fibras de sisal[1]. Utilizamos a ferramenta estatística denominada distribuição de Weibull, para prever as falhas mecânicas dos sistemas estudados. Foi possível observarmos que o compósito resultante teve uma melhora relativa em suas propriedades mecânicas, o que pôde ser comprovado por meio dos ensaios de tração. A distribuição de Weibull foi uma ferramenta que produziu resultados de acordo com os esperados, comprovando a melhoria de propriedades mecânicas do material.

The year 1957 was one of declining metal price and production. Many lead-zinc-copper mines were forced to close, and the remaining mines limited production to stay more in line with demand. High cost of labor, supplies, and equipment and high taxes aggravated the situation. Some operators postponed or abandoned expansion programs because of uncertain economic conditions. Output was curtailed by elimination of over- time employment and reduction of the working force. The number of employes laid off was small- reduction in the labor force was accomplished by not replacing those who left a company's employ.

Many activity measurements of components in liquid oxides have been reported in the field of slag chemistry. "A numerical model has been developed to predict the temperature history of particles injected in a low pressure d.c. plasma jet. The temperature and velocity fields of the plasma jet are predicted as a free jet by solving the parabolized compressible Navier-Stokes equations using a spatial marching scheme. Particle trojectories and heat transfer characteristics are calculated using the predicted plasma jet temperature and velocity fields. Correction factors have been introduced to take into account non-continuum effects encountered in the low pressure environment. The plasma jet profiles as well as the particle/plasma interactions under different jet pressure ratios (from underexpanded to overexpanded) have been investigated.I. IntroductionIn the plasma spraying process a d.c. plasma jet is used as a heat source to melt and accelerate powder particles which subsequently impinge and solidify on a given substrate. During low pressure plasma deposition (LPPD) prooess, the plasma jet is expanded into a low pressure environment (40-80 Corr) which results in high plasma jet velocities with Mach numbers ranging from 2 to 3. Previous efforts to predict heat transfer and fluid flow in plasmas have made use of incompressible flow formulation employing turbulence models [1-3] for atmospheric plasma spraying. However, these theoretical calculations have been limited to the subsonic flow regime; hence, the compressibility effects and viscous heat dissipation were neglected. In the LPPD process, the plasma jet is operated at the supersonic flow regime, therefore, the compressibility effects and viscous heat dissipation are no longer negligible. This is the main motivation of this work.In addition, production of high quality dense deposits requires that a large fraction of the injected particles be in a molten state when they impact the substrate. An additional motivation for this work is that it is important to understand the plasma/particle heat and momentum transfer since these phenomena dictate both the particle thermal history and particle trajectory.Early computational works in supersonic nozzle field flow [4,5,6] consisted of patching methods that divided the flow field into an invisoid free stream and a viscous boundary and. mixing layers. Each was analyzed independently and coupled through appropriate boundary conditions. Later schemes [7,8] involved solving time-dependent, compressible Navier-Stokes equations over the entire computational domain. These schemes show a great promise in predicting flows with complex structure, and where the viscous effects became prevalent."

The main industrial minerals produced are non-metallic - clay, dolomite, limestone, pumice, salt, serpentine, and silica sand. The other minerals, some with minor production, include diatomite, feldspar, magnesite, sulphur, asbestos, and perlite. Energy and metallic minerals and aggregate are excluded from this account. These industrial minerals occur in a wide range of rock types and geological ages. For example clays are known from the weathering products of Cretaceous rhyolite and leaching of Eocene coal measures; from Quaternary weathering of contemporary loess and shallow marine sediments, and of greywacke of Triassic-Jurassic age; and from the hydrothermal alteration of Late Cenozoic acidic volcanic rocks.

In spite of the fact that mining has been more or less active in the northern part of Vancouver island since the late 'nineties', there seems to be a remarkable lack of information regarding the nature and development of the region. Recently the operations at the Old Sport mine of the Coast Copper Company, Limited, and spectacular copper discoveries in the vicinity of Nimpkish lake, have directed the attention of the mining fraternity to the district. The writer spent the summer of 1929 making a reconnaissance examination of the general geology and mining properties of the area between Quatsino sound and Nimpkish lake, and he feels that a short paper describing the nature and mining possibilities of the region should be of interest at this time. A more detailed account of the ?geology and of the mining properties will be published in the forth- coming Summary Report of the Geological Survey. A short paper dealing with the Nimpkish Lake district was presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division, held recently in Vancouver.

The hydrodesulfurization characteristics of a residual fuel prepared from Wilmington, Calif., crude oil were determined at temperatures from 600° to 900° F, pressures of 200 to 800 pSig, and space velocities from 0.2 to 2.0 Vo/Vc/hr, using cobalt molybdate type catalysts. A prediction equation, developed from the experimental data, satisfactorily predicts the fraction of total sulfur that can be removed under any combination of operating conditions within the ranges investigated. Yields and properties of the low sulfur product are correlated with the fraction of total sulfur removed. Kinetic calculations show that the apparent reaction order and activation energy change with space velocity and temperature.

BECAUSE of the two distinct stages in the solidification of rimmed steel, segregation in the rimmed ingot is more complex than that in the killed or semikilled ingot. In the earlier stage, chemical reactions, resulting in evolution of gas and vigorous stirring of the metal, effect a degree of negative segregation unique to rimmed steel. The composition of this zone constitutes the principal quality advantage of this type of steel. In the later stage of solidification, after the evolution of gas has ceased, the segregation follows the general pattern of a more completely deoxidized steel. However, the composition of the liquid remaining after the first solidification stage varies markedly from that of the original melt, some constituents having been partially removed as reaction products while the concentration of others has been intensified by rejection from the metal solidifying in the first zone. The aim, from the standpoint of segregation, in rimmed steel of high quality is to effect a maximum negative segregation in the rim zone without excessive concentration of undesirable elements at the center of the ingot. To achieve this aim, the composition of the melt may be varied and the furnace and pouring practice may be adjusted within certain limits. It is the purpose of this study to discuss segregation in rimmed steel from the standpoint of the mechanisms that produce it and to survey the phases of open-hearth practice that influence those mechanisms. MECHANISMS PRODUCING SEGREGATION The mechanisms that determine the degree of segregation in the rimmed ingot are closely interrelated, making it difficult to select the primary factors and to determine a satisfactory order for presenting them. For instance, the question of sulphur segregation is relatively simple, since sulphur is not directly involved in chemical reactions in the ingot; but its concentration in the rim zone is dependent not only on its original analysis in the melt, its segregation coefficient, and the freezing rate, but also on the rate of its removal from the impure film on the solidifying surface. This washing action involves all the factors (such as freezing rate, the carbon-oxygen product, pressure, etc.) that determine the rate of gas evolution and hence the efficiency of film removal. Sulphur distribution between the rim and core is affected by the volumetric ratio between the two zones, and its segregation in the core is a function not only of the freezing rate of the core but also of all the foregoing factors that determine its concentration in the metal when solidification of the core starts. To simplify the presentation, it is proposed to treat the mechanisms affecting segregation independently in this section, reserving a discussion of their over-all effects for the section in which actual segregation data are given. The Candelaria copper-gold deposit is located in Region m of Chile, 805 kilometers north of the capital, Santiago. Candelaria was discovered in 1987, following a six month exploration program. In late 1986, induced polarization (IP) surveys outlined an anomalously high response within the area of interest. The first test hole bad three intersections totaling 49 meters, with an average grade of 1.97% copper. Drilling eventually outlined approximately 390 million tonnes, grading 1.09010 copper and 0.26 grams/tonne gold. Production began in early 1995 and is estimated at 120,000 tonnes copper and 80,000 ounces gold annually.
