The McCoy/Cove mine is located 48 km (30 miles) south of Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA, in the Fish Creek Mountains at an elevation of 1548 m (5080 ft), see Figure 1. Joseph H. McCoy first discovered gold at this location in 1914. This discovery led to the Gold Dome Mine which produced the first gold from this area in 1928. After the Gold Dome era, the land remained relatively dormant until Houston oil and Minerals Corporation purchased the claims from the Summa corporation and defined an ore body at the present day McCoy pit. In 1986 Tenneco Minerals (formerly Houston oil and Minerals corporation), sold the McCoy mine and adjoining claims to Echo Bay Minerals corporation. The Cove ore body was discovered soon after the sale to Echo Bay. Echo Bay expanded the heap leach operation and built the present mill which began processing ore in the fall of 1989.

"Gas injection to promote chemical reactions or mixing is a feature of many metallurgical processes. Often the aim of gas injection is to bring about a chemical reaction between the gas and liquid but most of the past physical and mathematical modelling work has ignored the influence of such reactions. In the work reported here, cold model studies have been conducted in which gas reacts with the liquid into which it was injected. The rate of liquid mixing has been measured as an indication of the mechanical energy transfer. It has been found that gas generated chemically within the liquid is significantly less effective at promoting mixing than the equivalent volume of inert gas. The relative ineffectiveness of chemically produced gas is thought to be due to smaller bubble sizes in comparison to the inert gas case. Small bubbles characteristic of chemically generated gas move with low slip velocities relative to the liquid and lead to different turbulence generation mechanisms.IntroductionIn processes such as steelmaking, copper conversion, bath smelting and ladle steel finishing gas is injected into liquid metal where it reacts chemically or simply serves as a source of agitation. An understanding of fluid flow phenomena in such situations is an essential pre-requisite to the calculation of process intensity and the optimisation of vessel productivity. Traditional physical cold modelling approaches to prediction of liquid flow in such situations are now often augmented by the techniques of computational fluid dynamics. Even with the availability of numerical modelling techniques cold physical models continue to have an important role for validation because it is generally difficult to obtain quantitative data from high temperature processes.Almost all previous cold modelling work has been based on the injection of an inert gas into water or some other non-reactive liquid. Such models do not include the significant increase in gas volume inherent in some processes. This paper is the third of a series recording the results of tests made at various quarries throughout the United States to determine (1) the relation between the size gradation of feed to, and product from, primary crushers, (2) the particle shape of the crushed. product, (3) the differences in gradation and particle shape produced by different types of primary crushers, and (4) the differences in gradation and particle shape caused by crushing different kinds of stone. Progress reports 1 and 2 dealt with comparisons of different types of crushers crushing the same type of stone. This report deals with relation¬ship between feed and product of two different limestones, as to size distribution and particle shape, when crashed in the same crusher.

A design phase load test program was performed at the Broadway Viaduct bridge site to evaluate load carrying capacity and constructability of post grouted drilled shafts. The program included construction, instrumentation, post grouting and load testing of three drilled shafts. Two shafts included sleeve port and plate base grouting apparatus and were post grouted. The third shaft was un-grouted and served as a control shaft for comparison of the un-grouted end bearing. The shafts were 5 feet in diameter with the control shaft at 55 feet in length and post grouted shafts at 55 and 66 feet. SPT borings at the centerline of each test shaft defined geotechnical conditions at each shaft. Test shafts were instrumented with strain gages and concrete integrity was evaluated with crosshole sonic logging. Instrumentation and data acquisition was used during the post grouting operation to fully capture the shaft behavior. Finally, Statnamic load testing was performed on all three shafts to their ultimate capacity. The fine to coarse sandy soils in which the shafts were tipped in were well suited to improvement from post grouting. Grout pressures of 660 psi were achieved with 0.08 inch or less of upward shaft movement. Subsequent Statnamic load tests showed 183 to 192 percent greater end bearing in the post grouted shafts as compared to the un-grouted shaft. The overall result showed a potential savings of approximately 9 feet to 35 feet of drilled shaft length in addition to the increased quality assurance from post grouting.

Weidlinger Associates was retained to evaluate the foundations supporting ten oil storage tanks at a tank farm on the east coast. The tanks were constructed over the site of a landfill which was underlain by deep organic deposits. The tanks were typically 48 ft. in height and ranged in diameter from 60 to 150 ft. The tanks were supported on both wood and steel pipe piles. After more than 35 years of service, an inspection found that up to 25 percent of the piles had separated from the mat foundation. The operations at the facility were temporarily stopped pending further investigation. Weidlinger developed comprehensive finite element models of the foundations for each tank and used random generators to conduct Monte Carlo simulations the range of scenarios of detached support conditions since it was not possible to survey all the piles below the tanks. To confirm the modeled performance and verify stability, each tank was also load tested using water with electronic instrumentation installed by Geo-Instruments. The instrumentation provided real time, web based monitoring during testing in areas which would otherwise be inaccessible during loading. Through inspection, complex modeling and sophisticated load testing, Weidlinger and Geo-Instruments were able to show that all but one of the tanks could safely be put back into service. This paper details the analysis, Monte Carlo simulations and instrumentation and load testing performed for this unique project.

In conventional Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RK-EF) laterite nickel processing, management of dust continues to be problematic. A more efficient processing of dust represents an opportunity for energy efficiency, increased production, and productivity. PT International Nickel Indonesia (PTI), together with Vale Base Metals Technology Development (VBMTD), has successfully developed and implemented a novel flowsheet enhancement that capitalizes on these opportunities. In the novel flowsheet, the dust recycle stream is moved forward in the RK-EF laterite nickel smelting process. The dust is injected into the kiln's main burner, as opposed to being recycled to the dryers. A similar treatment of dust is commonly practiced in the cement industry; however, application to nickel smelters has not been fully developed to date. This paper describes this dust insufflation technology, the process through which it was developed for laterite nickel processing, and summarizes the lessons learned. A key conclusion is that successful new technology development requires a multi-disciplinary team involving members from research and development, study management, engineering consulting firms, project implementation management, process technology and operations.

Palabora Mining Copper has a unique ore body composition which unlike other copper ore bodies has three main components in significant proportions; these are copper bearing ore, magnetite and dolerite. The high content of dolerite, a hard barren material, creates a high proportion of pebbles which normally are recycled back to the mill. This action increases the mill bearing pressure and power progressively until corrective actions are taken. A logical action to solve the pebbles generation would be to incorporate a pebble crusher. This in fact was done however two fundamental issues were encountered; the high content of magnetite and existence of a cyclone classification section. Due to the high content of magnetite, metal detectors have not been able to work efficiently to separate tramp metal which causes damage to the pebble crushers. The existence of cyclones in the circuit had a detrimental effect on the final product when the pebbles crusher was online producing coarse sandy material. Due to the difficulties in treating pebbles via conventional procedures and the unique Palabora ore composition and characteristics, sorting technology was investigated at laboratory and pilot scale. It was found that a combination of optical and electromagnetic sorting could efficiently separate dolerite from the copper bearing and magnetite ores. This paper reports the findings of the laboratory and pilot scale work performed and discusses the additional benefits to the circuit.

Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project located in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Since the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The "lime boil" process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95 to 98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. Reply by Y.C. Kim We do concur with Professor Mousset-Jones with respect to the merit of such case studies performed at a local university. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent com¬parative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging.

While magnetic surveys are the most common geophysical method used in mineral exploration, magnetics and geology remain to be fully integrated quantitatively in iron ore provinces. Although high-resolution aeromagnetic data has been collected over prospective areas of the Hamersley Province, much of the information in the data sets has hitherto not been fully exploited due to a lack of suitable interpretation methods. Recent advances in the processing and modelling of magnetics in highly magnetic terrains, constrained inversion and 3D visualisation and understanding the magnetic properties of banded iron formations and iron ores potentially create the capability to generate realistic 3D mapping of magnetite and hematite concentrations over large areas. Initial processing of conventional total magnetic intensity data produces true potential field maps that are unaffected by local perturbations of the regional geomagnetic field direction by intense local anomalies. The true potential field can be converted into vector and tensor components, each of which emphasises different structural features of the geology. Scalar quantities derived from these components simplify interpretation, using new methods, developed by CSIRO and elsewhere, that are less sensitive to magnetisation direction. Preliminary interpretations allow interpolation between mapped units and structures and evaluation of remanence and anisotropy effects. Accurate modelling requires rigourous treatment of self-demagnetisation and magnetic interaction effects. Semi-automated constrained inversion, combining magnetics with available geological information and other geophysical data, can be utilised to generate models of disposition of major magnetic units and the 3D magnetisation distribution within them. The final stage of interpretation is to exploit the understanding of magnetic properties (susceptibility, anisotropy and remanence) developed over many studies by CSIRO, the University of Western Australia and others to convert the interpreted magnetisation distributions into 3D maps of magnetite and hematite contents, which are the quantities of direct exploration interest.CITATION:Clark, D A, Foss, C A, Austin, J and Hillan, D, 2015. The Zijinshan gold-copper mine, in spite of the low-grade nature of the ore, has become one of the largest production-scale and most profitable non-ferrous metal mines in China. The successful application of hydrometallurgy as well as proper engineering design are the key factors for large-scale development of the Zijinshan gold-copper mine. In this contribution, the practical experience acquired in the development of the Zijinshan gold and copper mines is summarized. This covers most aspects of the production process including mining, beneficiation, ore stacking, heap (bio)leaching, carbon-in-leach, solvent extraction, electrowinning, wastewater and tailing treatments. The authors believe that this practical experience will not only help to promote the development of hydrometallurgy, but can also serve as a model for other gold and/or copper plants around the world.

For the past year, Lowphos Ore Ltd. has been operating two desliming hydroseparators on a fully automatic basis. Automatic operation is achieved by sensing the position of the silica-magnetite interface and automatically controlling the jet water addition to maintain a desired interface position. The system further provides automatic control of the underflow pump speed in order to assist in maintaining interface position when an <Ore change occurs. Interface position is maintained at 12 inches below the surface and is -controlled within plus or minus one inch. Metallurgical unit recovery is held above 98.5 per cent, and a 10 to 12 per cent increase in concentrate grade is normally achieved.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a laboratory-scale on-line analysis and process control system for a decopperization electrolytic circuit. This system is software driven, running on a 486DX-33 personal computer (PC) utilizing a portable energy- dispersive x-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer as the sample analyzer. The XRF copper reading obtained was used as the control variable through an RS-232 serial interface to the PC for software-based control of feed flowrates. When the copper concentration in the electrolytic cell (as measured by the XRF) deviated from the set point, the feed flowrate to the cell was automatically altered using software-based proportional-integral-differential (PID) computer control to yield the desired copper concentration at the electrolytic cell outlet.

A case study examining the procedures and financial benefits of introducing dump leaching to augment the Mt Gibson Gold Project CIP operations is discussed. Metallurgical testwork, followed by pilot dump leach operations, confirmed that gold recoveries of greater than 60 per cent could be achieved by dump leaching Mt Gibson laterite ore. Capital and operating costs were determined. Pit optimisation using the Whittle FOUR-D optimisation program calculated an optimum cutover grade between CIP and dump leaching for one orebody. The resultant recalculation of reserves based on CIP and dump leach operating costs showed that reserves for that orebody could be increased from 329 000 tonnes at 1.9 g/t An, to 1 488 000 tonnes at 1.2 gh An. NPV for the CIP only option of $1.4 m, was increased to $4.0 m for the combined CIP/dump leach option. This technique can be applied to existing gold projects and to new Developments.

The Strathcona mine, with a large new underground operation and concentrator, was recently brought into\ production by Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. The tailings disposal and water utilization problems at Strathcona are described in this paper, with sections devoted to the Moose Lake watershed system, tailing impounds, the construction of dams and the operation of the Moose Lake neutralization plant for the elimination of acidity, including the equipment used.

The first successful heap leach of silver ores in the State of Arizona has been under continuous operation since early 1976 at the State of Maine Mine, two miles southwest of Tombstone, Arizona. The silver produced from leaching old mine dumps at this property vas the first in the Tombstone mining district to achieve a 999+ purity. While cyanide leaching of silver and gold ores is a time-proven accepted practice, a relatively new method of treatment called "heap" leaching was employed. Heap leaching is a comparatively inexpensive fast way to recover precious metals from low grade material.

The present work proposes a distributed collaborative immersive virtual reality framework for prospective applications in the mining industry. A human-centered approach is described, with people being placed in the central position and surrounded by tasks that are to be carried out. Those tasks can be then achieved through synchronous or asynchronous communication, interactions using properly constructed user interfaces, virtual and/or augmented realities and computer vision. Several examples of such arrangements are presented. One of the applications facilitates an e-learning experience by providing a very familiar object – a book – as a target for users to interact with. Importantly, this system has the potential to provide an ‘enhanced’ teaching medium, as humans tend to remember events/situations better when they experience those events in person, when the immersive factor is involved. The immersive virtual reality environment enables a user to interact physically with various 3D objects and experience behaviours, which in turn reinforces the idea that doing leads to learning. This prototype system can be implemented as an efficient and cost effective e-learning and training platform for different engineering domains. At another level, the same technology can be used in the tele-operation of mining equipment for the future mine.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a influência da deformação plástica na resistência à corrosão do aço API 5L X65, amplamente utilizado na fabricação de dutos destinados à indústria de petróleo e gás natural. Com esse propósito foi realizada análise metalográfica antes e após ensaios eletroquímicos de corrosão. Conclui-se que todas as condições 0%, 0,5%, 1,0%, 1,5%, 2,0% e 2,5% de deformação sofreram corrosão generalizada e as velocidades de corrosão foram similares em solução NACE 177-A.
