There is a critical need for effective instructional materials at the university level and for an upgrading of mine safety and health in the mining engineering curriculum. A fundamental approach to mine safety and health is recast into the familiar 3 E's: engineering, education, and enforcement, in that order. Each is briefly reviewed and their interdependence emphasized. A unique philosophy for successfully integrating safety and health principles into the mining engineering curriculum is offered. The concept of textbook ?tailoring? is discussed and defended, permitting rapid assemblage and synthesis of existing educational materials. Final recommendations are made for a u, comprehensive approach to mine safety and health education in the undergraduate curriculum.

This paper claims to provide a description of diffusion processes in solids which is said to be a reformulation of Fick's Laws and therefore, presumably, is supposed to be as general as those laws. In fact, it appears to provide no more than an atomic model of a rather restricted type leading even to results in conflict with experiment. The restriction lies in the assumption, carried throughout the paper, that even in a chemical gradient the jump frequency i of an atom of species i is a function only of the composition on the plane from which it jumps, i.e., ?i = ?i(cl, c2 ...). This means that atom jumps in opposite directions from a site would occur with equal probability. There would then be no tendency for atoms to migrate preferentially in one direction along the gradient, so the model is incapable of accommodating the well established phenomenon of atom drift in a chemical gradient.10-" A more general model that does not suffer this difficulty was discussed in a paper13 I wrote in 1958, and the results therein already contain as a special case those given by Dr. DeHoff. The simplest sufficiently general assumption is to suppose that ?i is a function ?i(a1 a2,...; wl, w2, ..-) of the concentration aj and ? ?j at the site from which and to which, respectively, a jump is made. Any such function can always be expressed as a function of the sum and difference of its arguments. Thus d is the jump distance and g a geometrical constant. Obviously this is zero, i.e., no drift, if ??ri/??j = 0. X is written in this form, revealing two components of the total drift, because it can be shown that only the second component, depending on ??'i/???(?j -aj), actually contributes to the net diffusion flux Ji. This component can be shown,13 by a straightforward ther-modynamic transcription, to be responsible for the so called "thermodynamic factor" in the Darken approximation for a chemical diffusion coefficient is the activity coefficient of i. Because the jump rate ?i in DeHoff's approximation has no dependence on the concentration gradient it does not seem possible to derive the Darken equation from his Eq. [6] without the further rather arbitrary assumption that ?i = const ri. It is to be noted too that the author's derivation of Eq. [12] is only valid when ?i is in fact a function only of the cj at the plane from which the atom jumps—for only then is ci?i a unique function of position and therefore of A. Author's Reply R. T. DeHoff I am indebted to Dr. LeClaire for his penetrating discussion of my paper, "A Reformulation of Fick's First Law". I concede that it does appear initially that the relationship presented in my paper could be derived from the detail atomic model of random walk and atom drift presented in Dr. LeClaire's approach. However, there are some important differences in concept and viewpoint which deserve further amplification. Dr. LeClaire's description is penetrating, detailed, and fundamental. His approach describes an extremely complex phenomenon, the displacement of atoms in a multicomponent gradient, at a sophisticated level. For precisely these reasons, his analysis has not proved to be useful for experimental studies that have practical objectives. For example, in order to obtain the information required to complete the analysis of the jump frequency distribution in a ternary system, the following series of experiments would, I believe, be required: 1) chemical (gradient) experiments, covering the composition range;

There was reported in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 5754/ a series of tests to determine the compressibility and bearing strength of specimens prepared from blocks of potash salt obtained from a mine near Carlsbad , N. Mex . The events leading up to the investigation were sketched in a foreword by George S. Rice , then chief mining engineer of the Bureau ( retired September 30 , 1937 ) ; this foreword also gives a discussion of the possibility of increasing the ultimate total recovery of the potash salt by " second mining" of pillars or by use of a longwall system . In June 1936 , Rice and the senior author visited Carlsbad with H. I. Smith , chief of the mining division of the Geological Survey , to observe mining then in progress and to discuss with the management of one of the mines records of convergence of roof and floor which they were obtaining . It developed that serious thought was being given to the possibility of roof failure resulting from shear at the faces of pillars . There was envisioned the danger of such cracks extending upward to water - bearing strata . Obviously , the simple compression tests of the potash salt then being made would throw no light on this question , and tests of assemblies of potash and roof salts would have to be made . In this connection it is to be remembered that in the mine no sharp division exists between the potash salt being recovered and the nearly pure halite which forms the roof . The interlocked crystalline structure is continuous , and there is merely a very rapid decrease in the proportion of sylvite in a short distance vertically . Figure 2 of Technical Paper 575 shows that two samples near the top of the salt being mined contained , respectively , 51 and 65 percent potassium chloride . Contrasted with this is an analysis of the roof salt given on page 24 of that publication , which showed only 3.6 percent potassium chloride . As the data given in Technical Paper 575 show , the roof salt is much less plastic than the potash salt . The immediate roof may then be thought of as a more rigid stratum of indefinite extent resting on and continuous with yielding supports and loaded uniformly at the rate of 900 to 950 pounds per square inch . Just what thickness of the salt should be considered as immediate roof is uncertain .

A sedimentation method involving the use of the Palo-Travis apparatus was found satisfactory for rapid determination of the size distribution of coal particles ranging from 10 microns in diameter to those passing an 840-micron opening (20-mesh sieve), The method is most useful for comparing the size distributions of samples of pulverized coal where the actual size of the particles is not required and is applicable to sieve and subsieve sizes of a wide variety of coals and chars that can be wetted and are heavier than water. An analysis, including all calculations, can be completed in 1/2 to 10 hours, depending on the time required for the finely divided coal to settle. A typical analysis requires about an hour, making this a rapid, precise method for routine size-distribution analysis of powdered coals. When used with coal particles smaller than 400 microns, the method is precise within 15 microns for wide variations in test conditions and within 5 microns for identical test conditions. The precision decreases as particle size increases, becoming unsatisfactory for particles larger than 400 microns (40-mesh). For precision within 15 microns, the samples must be equal in weight. Greater precision is obtained with 4-gram samples, but samples as small as l gram may be used.

The minerals industry has enormous potential to positively contribute to sustainable development and many leading companies have concluded that their long-term success is directly linked to their ability to leave a lasting positive legacy. While there are many examples of success, there have been failures as well and much work has been done in recent years to define the role of the minerals industry in sustainable development and identify the key elements for success. In the past, our sector could point to the taxes and royalties it paid, the exports it generated and employment it created and felt confident that its contribution would be recognised and duly acknowledged. This is no longer the case. Critics of the industry have highlighted resource-rich countries that have failed to capitalise on their resource wealth and have arguably lower standards of living than their resource-poor peers û the æresource curseÆ hypothesis. Recent research has done much to clarify the factors that contribute to a countryÆs success or failure and all stakeholders in the industry now need to include these learnings in their approaches going forward. We know that our long-term success relies on embedding a company- wide approach to sustainable development into all aspects of our business operations. In this paper we highlight BHP BillitonÆs experience in the development and implementation of policies and systems designed to enhance our contribution to sustainable development. We detail the business drivers for excellence in this area and the key external codes and initiatives that have shaped our approach. The values-based BHP Billiton Charter, Sustainable Development Policy and associated Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Management Standards are central to our approach. Implementation is reviewed through our HSEC audit program. One area in which we have placed particular emphasis is our approach to community development. BHP Billiton has a corporate target to contribute one per cent of its pre-tax profit on a three year rolling average to voluntary community programs. As our profit stream has increased with the minerals boom this is approaching an A$100 million commitment. In our paper we detail how we are working to ensure we maximise the value of this contribution for our communities and our shareholders.

"Surveying, and as a result, surveyors, have been around since the start of time, and it has been said that so has their methodology!The theodolite and tape have been the backbone of a time-tested practice that has led to ground breaking advancements such as electronic distance measurement (EDM), global positioning system (GPS) and positional laser scanning. However, it was the introduction of the unmanned aerial system (UAS) that has allowed mine sites such as St Ives to take the next step towards truly turning survey data into metadata.This paper will explain how the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was adapted to meet the requirements of a mine site supporting a major open pit operation, and how the open pit mining team adjusted their planning and production processes to maximise use of the extra data and information available to them.The advantages of the system include point cloud surveys with corresponding large-scale up-to-date photography and computer generated high detail contouring of mined areas that are then incorporated into the mine plan. All the while, the use of the UAV must be tailored to each specific problem encountered and a solution then matched.Citation:Steven, R, 2016. Electrostatic separation is one of the most misunderstood physical processes used to beneficiate minerals. Nonetheless, millions of tons of titanium ores, iron ores and other minerals are processed every year economically, efficiently and safely. Over the past ten years major advances in electrostatic separation and its application have occurred. New processes include dewatering clay slurries, separating halite and sylvite, and shape separation of vermiculite and gangue minerals. Electrostatic separation techniques are based on one of two methods, electrophoresis or dieleccrophoresis -- processes involving charged and uncharged particles respectively. In some cases, the combination of these two techniques has proven quite useful. The purpose of this paper is to provide a basic understanding of the physical processes collectively called "electro- static separation" in order to enhance one's ability to define and consider new possibilities in mineral processing and other fields.

Round Mountain Gold (RMG) in cen­tral Nevada, reports that over a nine-year period and a million operating hours, its fleet of 150-ton and 190-ton haul trucks has averaged better than 93% availability, with some of the trucks approaching 70,000 operating hours. Repair costs have been far below industry averages. Mine operations manager Pete Kesl credits the high availability and low repair costs to a succession of Product Support Agreements between RMG and Caterpillar dealer Cashman Equipment. He adds that good equipment and a high level of trust and co­operation between all parties to these agreements have been essential to their success at Round Mountain.

Line-of-sight radio control has received widespread acceptance for use in many mining methods because today’s technology offers improved economics and personnel safety. Significant advances in higher autonomy for mining machines are not currently seeing widespread use even though they offer great future potential. With autonomous capabilities being a longer-term goal, a logical sequence of advances based on TeleRemote control is proposed. Under Tele - Remote control, the operator is in direct control of the machine at all times. Three levels of Tele - Remote control systems are presented including line-of-sight, extended line-of-sight, and full load-haul-dump applications. Distributed control and sensing subsystems arranged in a vehicle control area network support incremental system expansion through the three levels of TeleRemote control and prepare the machine for integration of higher levels of automation as mature technology becomes available. This approach allows full exploitation of today’s mining automation technology with a flexible future growth path.

The presence of reactive metal sulfide minerals in waste rock contributes to the hazard of spontaneous combustion in dumps, as these minerals react with air and water entering the dump at ambient temperatures to form various mineral products and significant heat. This reaction series can also be an initiator of self-heating of carbonaceous material present in the waste rocks if sufficiently high temperatures are reached. Characterisation of these reactive minerals has primarily been to assess the risk of acid mine drainage, which is not necessarily an indicator of spontaneous combustion risk. No systematic testing procedure has been adopted by industry to assess the spontaneous combustion propensity of the waste rock. As a consequence, the principal management strategy for spontaneous combustion has been a reactive approach of dealing with events as they arise.Recent advances in adiabatic oven-testing have enabled more definitive assessment of the spontaneous combustion propensity of coals, including the quantification of the accelerating influence of reactive pyrite (Beamish and Beamish, 2011, 2012; Beamish, Lin and Beamish, 2012). This same test procedure has been used to assess the self-heating performance of metal concentrates and is therefore amenable to assessing the metal sulfide oxidation process from low ambient temperatures. The data obtained from such testing can be used to quantify the more prone waste rock sequences of a mineral deposit in advance of mining. This enables appropriate management planning for emplacement and long-term storage of waste rock in dumps.CITATION:Beamish, B and Theiler, J, 2016. "INTRODUCTION During the past few years, the development of millisecond-delay electric blasting caps has made possible a more flexible control over timing the firing of individual charges in blasting, The use of these caps has proved especially productive in quarry blasting and in numerous construction operations, but their use in underground mining is developing more slowly, although in some cases, as the solution to a difficult breaking problem, they have been well-received. When used in metal-mine drifts, the general objection is that the broken rock is thrown too far. In nearly all cases, however, use of millisecond-delay caps results in better fragmentation of the rock and a lower powder consumption per ton of rock broken.Prom 1949 to 1952, several series of experiments were conducted at the Mount Weather, Va., Experimental mine in conjunction with driving a 6- by 10-toot ventilation raise. 3/4/ The raise-round experiments in this 238-foot shaft, using millisecond-delay electric blasting caps in various drill-round patterns, are the subject of this report.SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONSAll rounds discussed in this report were drilled in the hard rock (epidosite and greenstone) of the ventilation raise at Mount Weather Experimental mine (figs. 1 and 2). The drill-round patterns varied from 28- to 32 holes and from a V-cut design to one having no cut boles at all. With the exception of the first two rounds, all blasting was done with millisecond-delay electric blasting caps. In all rounds 60-percent ammonia gelatin dynamite was used and holes were stemmed with two cartridges of sand stemming."

Project engineering and development is a process of optimisation of capital, operating and financial costs, and extraction rates in the light of current and forecast economic conditions for the sale of the product. The aim of the process is to maximize financial returns to the sponsors (project owners) within many often conflicting constraints. Thus, the sponsor's engineering and financial staff have a common goal, with performance measured in financial terms. Consequently, each group must be aware of, and responsive to, the constraints imposed upon the other. For financial staff, the increasing size and complexity, and escalating capital costs of new ventures have required them to seek finance in larger amounts, and by non-traditional methods. In addition, senior management are requiring indications of the availability of finance as a pre-requisite to a decision to commence project development activities.

It's know that the cathodic purity and the electrolyte treatment is affect for the solid present in the electrolyte. Anodic slimes properties (f.e.: chemical composition, crystalline composition, sedimentation) was studied in copper electrorefining, this properties were modify through by anodic composition and current density. In this paper will be present only the preliminary anodic slimes relationship at different lead anodic composition. The anodic material was doped during the poured process with lead at different composition. It's confirm the apparition of the (Bindheimitte) SMbz07. The specific gravity of this specie is approximately 7.3 - 7.5, with this values is biggest the probability of sedimentation and smaller the slimes not sedimentabel.

"The House/Senate Joint Conference Committee has instructed the Bureau of Mines to have the Advisory Committee on Mining and Mineral Resources Research review on an annual and simultaneous basis each generic mineral technology research center (GMTC). In order to accomplish that review promptly and uniformly, committee members have revised and approved an in-depth questionnaire. That document formed the basis of their review. The information provided by that questionnaire was an important factor in their recommendations concerning the future direction of the program; a presentation was made at the last National Plan Update.The comprehensive nature of the questionnaire and the scope of the information contained therein make it an excellent retrospective of the Center. Having a clear vision of where the Center has been and knowing where it is now will help guide it into the future. It is felt that such a detailed view of the Center's facilities and research program will be of value to Center personnel and Advisory Committee members.Each aspect of the questionnaire has been examined, answered in detail, and documented throughly. With the completed questionnaire as a guide, this volume examines the research program, Center personnel presently active on GMTC projects, number of graduate degrees granted with GMTC support, GMTC publications, degree of individual interaction, technology transfer, the reference center, GMTC equipment and facilities, and any envisioned plans for future research. It is hoped that this volume will serve as a review of the years 1984-1988, the first four years of the Center's operation."

The current work investigates the behavior of inclined micropiles under seismic loads. The dynamic finite element method (FEM) was employed. Rayleigh damping was applied to the soil, and elastic beam elements were employed to model the micropiles. The micropile structure was assumed to have one degree of freedom as a column with concentrated mass. The numerical modeling of micropiles was performed to explore the effects of their inclination on their seismic performance within homogeneous soils with uniform stiffness. In addition, the effect of soil stiffness was studied by considering various stiffness in soil depth. The results from the studies have shown significant effects on the dynamic amplification and internal seismic-induced loads of inclined micropiles.

Mercury is sometimes present in non-ferrous ores including gold, zinc, copper and lead. The selection and use of appropriate mercury abatement technology is critical for preventing its release to the environment during ore processing and to protect workers from mercury exposure. This paper presents a general decision-making process for mercury abatement technology selection for major emission sources in the gold industry. Mercury abatement can be accomplished through making process changes and/or by adding a process step to an existing system (i.e. "end-of-pipe control"). Advantages and limitations of the technologies along with waste / by-product management options are discussed through case studies of current operating mercury abatement systems.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds of Clay, Gilmer, and Lewis Counties, W. Va. In 1966, almost 1.3 million tons of coal was mined in these counties, of which more than one-half was from the Pittsburgh coalbed. Washability analyses were made of 16 coalbed samples. Of these, only 11 samples could be upgraded to metallurgical quality. For steam or power generation five of the coals were of low sulfur content as received. The remaining samples were generally of medium sulfur content even after upgrading.

A tertiary amine containing polyamine in its back bone was grafted to exfoliated graphite oxide by means of a series of chemical reactions.The synthesized amine functionalized polyaniline grafted to exfoliated graphite oxide (EGAMPANI) was characterized using various techniques such as, FTIR, TGA, Raman, and X-Ray diffraction.The synthesized EGAMPANI was blended with carbon paste electrode, and used to study the response of Hg2+ in acetate buffer solution.Preliminary analysis showed that the anodic current intensity using the EGAMPANI modified electrode was higher during a potential sweep and 10-4 M concentration of mercury could be detected which could be improved to 10-6 M using anodic stripping voltammetric technique. El presente trabajo revisa el panorama sobre el proceso de clasificación y explotación de los recursos minerales no metálicos en el Perú, con el objeto de promover el desarrollo de la minería no metálica. Los metales de origen mineral se clasifican en cuatro grupos: metales en estado nativo y minerales metálicos, combustibles minerales, aguas subterráneas y un gran número de sustancias minerales que no están comprendidas en ninguna de las categorías mencionadas, y que constituyen el grupo de los no metíllicos, llamados también minerales y rocas industriales. Asimismo, se muestra la clasificación establecida por el código de minería (combustibles minerales, minerales industriales, refractarios, material de construcción y minerales no metálicos diversos). Luego se describe el valor de la producción nacional de minerales no metálicos, como la situación actual de la minería no metálica en el Perú. Concluyendo que el Estado debe priorizar la prospección de minerales no metálicos de acorde a la importancia del desarrollo del país, asi como estimular la iniciativa privada para el descubrimiento de nuevos depósitos de dichas sustancias comercialmente explotables.
