The Copper Range Company's mining properties are located in the Upper Penisula of Michigan. (Fig.). Early work indicated the presence of copper ore in a bedded deposit, confined to the base of the Upper Keweenawan Nonesuch shale, and exploitation of this deposit on a portion of the Company's property was undertaken by White Pine Copper Company. Diamond drilling of the White Pine orebody indicated that a major fault pattern terminated the values to the South-west. Further drilling Southwest of the fault zone proved a downward displacement of the ore bearing horizon some 1,500 feet and a lateral displacement of approximately 4,000 feet; and in this area an ore deposit was outlined in a large asymmetrical syncline locally plunging to the South-west. Studies by the Bureau of Mines have identified geologic structures in mine roof rock that contribute to many roof falls in Appalachian coal mines. These structures, including paleochannels, scours, pinchouts, slickensides, clay veins, crevasse splays, and joints, can often be identified during, and sometimes before, mine development. Mine projections can be revised to reduce the adverse effects of discontinuitites in roof structure; large roof areas of laminated sandstone or incompetent strata generally can be delineated or inferred from exploratory drill hole data, and the need for supplementary support can be anticipated. Accurate descriptions of roof geology also provide some indication of optimum length and type of roof bolts that should be installed.

"2.1. General Considerations and Properties2.1.1. IntroductionOur present knowledge of the platinum-group elements (POE) is extensive, the reason being two-fold. The elements have many uses and, moreover, they exhibit extremely varied chemical behaviour, depending on their state of oxidation and chemical environment. The present chapter reviews a selected body of material which is of particular relevance to mineralogy and geochemistry.Comprehensive treatises on the POE include those by Mellor (1956-1957), Gmelin (1938-1957) and Pascal (1958). The inorganic chemistry, particularly coordination chemistry, has been dealt with in works by Griffith (1967), Hartley (1973) and Livingstone (1975), and the analytical chemistry by Walsh and Hausman (1963), Beamish (1966) and Beamish and Van Loon (1972, 1977). Darling (1973) and Savitsky (1978) have reviewed the metallurgical properties and applications of the metals. Goldberg and Helper (1968) have reviewed the thermochemistry and oxidation potentials of POE systems, and Wagman et at. (1969) have also provided selected values of their thermodynamic properties. The geochemistry of the POE has been reviewed by Yushko-Zakharova et at. (1967), Cousins (1973), Cabri (1974), and Naldrett and Duke (1980).Platinum was used briefly as a coinage metal in ImperialRussia. Otherwise, the principal early use for platinum and its alloys was in the fabrication of chemically resistant apparatus. Subsequently, a large part of platinum production was utilized for catalysts in the sulphuric acid and ammonia industries. Platinum has been replaced by vanadium pentoxide in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, but, in recent times, catalytic upgrading of petroleum and emission control systems for automobiles have opened further huge markets for the metal. All of the POE find uses either as reagents or catalysts in the synthesis of organic compounds, e.g., in the Wacker process, which uses palladium chloride to catalyze the production of acetaldehyde from ethylene. There are, of course, a large number of specialized uses for the elements, particularly in alloys, temperature measurement devices, cancer therapy and so on."

'T. C. MERRIMAN, New Haven, Conn. (written discussion *).-This most interesting paper gives much carefully obtained and valuable data. However, there are two points in connection with the commercial application of such data that might possibly be a source of trouble and mis-understanding. In the first place, the examination of thin sections of annealed brass, subjected to standard Brinell test.(500 kg. on a 10-mm. diameter ball) at thicknesses from 0.075 to 0.150 in. (1.9 to 3.8 mm.) indicates that cold work has been performed on the specimen during the application of the load sufficient to extend way through the section, and have the hardness of the metal affected by the backing. If the usual steel support is used, this effect is very evident. If a piece of soft brass is used as a support, there is an indentation in the surface of the support accompanied by a bulge on the under side of the tested specimen opposite the impression made by the 10-mm. ball. The result is that Brinell specifications (governmental or otherwise) on stock for a certain purpose may not be fair in all cases, since manufacturers, owing to differences in equipment, etc., may not all use precisely the thickness and conditions of stock on which the Brinell specifications were based. This would mean that the government Brinell specification might not give them the temper of stock best suited for their manufacturing methods. The concluding paragraph of this paper, stating that "the hardness of cartridge brass may be determined with greater accuracy by the Brinell hardness measurement than by attempting to judge it from the grain size" appears to be in line with the movement of the last year or so among brass manufacturers toward substitution of the Brinell test for microscopic examination as an acceptance test on cartridge brass. The statement may he strictly true that the Brinell test is the best test for hardness, but it is not, as the statement might readily be construed, a sufficient test of suitable condition. For instance, some cartridge brass might accidentally have been overheated to a point where it would be distinctly unsafe to use for the manufacture of small arms cases and then be so rolled (reduction 3 to 5 per cent.) as to pass perfectly proper Brinell specifications. Under such conditions the microscope would reveal its unsuitability where the Brinell test had failed so to do.

Leonardite , a naturally occurring , partially oxidized form of lignite with a high content of humic acids , was investigated as a binder for iron ore pellets . Although insoluble in original condition , leonardite forms watersoluble salts with good binding properties when treated with certain alkalis such as sodium hydroxide . Soluble leonardite imparts excellent dry strength to pellets , but green strength is somewhat lower than that obtainable with bentonite . However , green strength can be improved by adding a small amount of calcium hydroxide to the leonardite - concentrate mixture . Leonardite binders were used successfully on three of the four different concentrates tested .

The results of a preliminary investigation of compressive strength versus length-diameter (L/D) ratios of potash specimens and the statistical treatment of the data are summarized in this report. The purpose of the study was to evaluate a laboratory method for obtaining estimates of the strength of potash pillars during robbing operations. The specific objectives of this preliminary investigation were to test the method and the reliability (confidence limits) of the data, and to determine the number of additional specimens necessary for given confidence limits. The specimens were taken from three sites at two mines in New Mexico. The statistical analyses included the determination of the confidence limits for the data and the number of additional specimens necessary to obtain confidence limits of ±500 and 100 psi. The testing method was found acceptable, and estimates of the comprehensive strength, within 1500 psi, could be obtained by testing about 110 additional specimens from the three sites. The compressive strength of the specimens tested fits an empirical equation of the type

No presente trabalho busca-se avaliar o comportamento do solo virgem e com os resíduos, compactado, uma alternativa para área de Construção Civil. O estudo tem o objetivo de avaliar o solo (classificado como solo laterítico); e solo composto de polipropileno reciclado (rPP) e pó de madeira (PM); caracterizando a forma física e mecânica de rPP/PM para aterro. Neste trabalho, investiga-se a influencia dessas adições no comportamento mecânico de camadas compactadas de solo, avaliando o efeito do teor de composto rPP/PM. As amostras de polipropileno reciclado (rPP), e serragem (PM), foram separadas cada uma em 10%, 20% e 30%, e aquecidas juntas, após o aquecimento misturadas ao solo. Sendo classificado como solo de baixa compressibilidade (ML), caracterizando um silte argiloso. Segundo a classificação HBR, tem-se P200 < 35%, LL > 40, IP < 10 e IG =0, assim o grupo de classificação pertence ao grupo A-2, subgrupos A-2-5. Os resultados de Índice de Suporte Califórnia (ISC) do solo em estudo foram de 41% para amostra de solo e 130% para amostra de solo mais compósito.

Staves Coolers de cobre proporcionaram uma excelente proteção da carcaça do alto-forno em áreas de alta temperatura. Isso resultou para que os operadores de alto-forno alcançassem alto desempenho em termos de produtividade e taxa de combustível, além de campanhas de mais de 15 anos. No entanto, nos últimos anos, alguns altos-fornos experimentaram um desgaste prematuro nos staves de cobre. Algumas dessas empresas se alinharam com Paul Wurth para investigar a causa fundamental desse fenômeno com base em todos os fatores de influência e, em seguida, propor ações corretivas. Since the discovery by conventional prospecting of the Horne deposit in 1920, the Noranda area has produced 82 million tons of copper-zinc-gold-silver ore from sixteen massive sulphide bodies. Recent exploration in the area has consisted of systematic studies employing geology, geophysics and geochemistry. Due to the depth of the deposits being sought, surface geo-physical surveys are limited in their effectiveness as DIRECT indicators. However, because of the geological environment, surface geophysical methods, and the Induced Polarization method in particular, can be success-fully employed as INDIRECT indicators of ore deposits. Examples of survey results from various properties in the Noranda area illustrate the advantages and limitations of the Induced Polarization method as an exploration tool in this area.

Applications of mathematical statistics to the field of exploration are still relatively new. There are two primary reasons why little has been published in this field. First, if one discovers an effective technique for exploration, he does not like to disclose it. Second, the geologist needs to work closely with a mathematical statistician, and the communications barrier between the disciplines is formidable. The authors of this paper, one a geologist and the other a statistician, were interested in the economic benefit which appeared to be possible in the interdisciplinary area which they have called "geostatistics." An actual example has been selected to illustrate this benefit.

A great deal of technical and research effort has been applied to the development of models to predict fragmentation from rock blasting. A number of quite useful empirical or engineering models are currently available to blasting engineers and consultants, while more sophisticated approaches using mechanistic and numerical descriptions of rock breakage continue to be developed and applied by researchers and explosives companies.The fragmentation resulting from any blast will be heavily dependent on the properties of the rock mass being blasted; however, most empirical models rely on ‘rock factors’ generated from simple rock mass properties to describe the influence of the rock on the blasting outcome. In contrast, mechanistic models need explicit rock mass properties that require sophisticated laboratory measurements and detailed structural data if realistic outcomes are to be generated. The fragmentation modeller is caught between excessively simple rock mass descriptions for the empirical models and excessively complex data requirements for the mechanistic models.This paper briefly reviews the basis of a range of fragmentation models and the rock mass properties on which they rely. Shortcomings in the way that the mining industry tends to characterise the blasting properties of rock are discussed and some practical approaches are described to quantify these properties in both operating and greenfield mining environments. Case studies are presented where specific additional breakage properties and modelling features have been needed to generate a useful description of the fragmentation achieved.CITATION:Scott, A and Onederra, I, 2015. Mining represents the first industry in the United States to have federally mandated training for its workers. Although the topics to be covered are specified in 30 CFR 48, course content is left to the discretion of the individual mine operators. Unfortunately, certain topics to be covered, such as prevention of accidents, are usually mine specific, making it very difficult to use the same course content in every mine. Further, training requirements may change from one mine to another, due to changes in the demographic characteristics of the workers, or changes in job and organizational characteristics. Therefore, if the intention of safety training is to modify the behavior of workers, it is expected that there should be some changes in the content of safety training programs in order to address the specific requirements of individual mines, or at least mines of similar worker and job characteristics. This study has been directed towards the development of a systems-based procedure for conducting a needs analysis. A special effort was made to understand the psychology of worker behavior by analyzing worker reactions to various organizational and job characteristics.

Coal shearers are one of the major sources of dust and fines in underground coal mines. Despite considerable research investigations, no comprehensive in situ investigations coupled with extensive laboratory studies on the effects of drum design on generation of dust and fines have been found. It may be for this reason that many major shearer drum manufacturers persistently employ a certain drum-lacing pattern on current coal shearers, which is believed to cause excessive dust and fines in coal mines. This paper shows how respirable dust and fines are minimized under near-identical conditions when the drum lacing pattern was changed from a triple-tracking to a single tracking arrangement. A series of laboratory trials simulating in full scale the practical cutting action of tools was followed by extensive long-term underground trials during production operations in OAL (Cayirhan) Lignite mine in Turkey. The results are presented and discussed, and recommendations for proper drum-lacing in terms of respirable dust and fines are made.

A linear array of shot and gage holes 30 feet deep in a granite outcrop was used to compare the size and shape of radial strain pulses produced in the rock when short cylindrical charges of cast composition B were detonated axially or at one end. The axially detonated charges produced radial strain pulses that had shorter rise times and larger peak strain than the strain pulses produced by end detonated charges.

But it is only in this respect that the industry is the voracious, many-headed, many-armed and many-handed creature it has been so often painted by those who know it not too intimately and only from the outside. Contrasted sharply with the immensity of the service rendered is the relatively modest share of the national income which has gone to those who provided the tools and the mental and manual labor with which the service was performed. No doubt the relative meagreness of the re- ward was the result of a combination of fortuitous circumstances respecting the nature and accessibility of the industry's raw material and the extensive development and application of the most advanced technology, spurred by an intense competition.

Refratários MgO-C encontram-se entre os mais adequados para o uso na linha de escória de panelas para aço líquido. Seu comportamento, nesta aplicação, depende de fatores termodinâmicos e cinéticos. Métodos de cálculo termodinâmico para avaliar o potencial de degradação de refratários MgO-C por escórias e pela atmosfera são revistos brevemente. Tais métodos envolvem, em geral, premissas importantes sobre a quantidade de materiais envolvidos. Para avaliar um método mais simples, foram escolhidos dois tijolos MgO-C e duas escórias típicas do processo da CSN. Estes tijolos e escórias foram caraterizados, neste trabalho. O método apresentado consiste na realização de cálculos de equilíbrio em que a principal variável é a fração de escória em uma mistura hipotética com o refratário. Para a composição do refratário foram empregadas (a) composição média e (b) composição da matriz do tijolo. Os resultados indicam que é possível realizar previsões iniciais quanto à reatividade do refratário e determinada escória de forma simples. Os cálculos, evidentemente, não substituem testes cinéticos e testes em escala industrial, em vista da complexidade dos sistemas em questão.

Several grindability tests were developed over the years to design grinding circuits or optimize existing operations. Each test has its own strengths and weaknesses and it is imperative to select the proper test procedure(s) to meet project deliverables and minimize the risk of a project. Pilot plant testing of large bulk samples historically constituted the traditional approach for AG or SAG design, but was gradually replaced by small-scale tests. Nowadays, conducting grindability tests requiring only a few kilos of material on several samples is a more typical approach to grinding mill design. This paper summarises the requirements and deliverables of various bench-scale test procedures, their strengths and weaknesses, and cases where AG/SAG pilot testing should still be performed.

Cyprus Sierrita Corp. has 16 parallel 5.03 m-diam x 5.8 m long (16.5 ft-diam x 19 ft) primary ball mills, each operating in closed circuit with a nest of cyclones. Before the upgrade to 840 mm (33 in.) cyclones, each mill operated with a nest of five 660 mm (26 in.) cyclones - four in use and one on standby. In this configuration, the mill throughput was 88.5 kt/d (97,500 stpd). Flotation feed averaged 25.9% +212 pm (+65 mesh). The 660 mm (26 in.) cyclones normally operated at an inlet pressure of 34 kPa (5 psi), lower than the inlet pressure of 55 kPa (8 psi) recommended by the manufacturer. The circuit was typically operated with cyclone overflow densities greater than 40% solids to achieve the required throughput. This resulted in inefficient cyclone operation and excessive coarse oversize reporting to flotation. The apexes choked frequently. Larger apexes were tested but reduced the classification efficiency and resulted in circulating loads greater than 800%.

"In 1991, the Canadian Council of Ministers for the Environment (CCME) charged its Waste Management Task Group with developing a nationally coordinated strategy to measure, monitor, and achieve the objective of decreasing the generation of waste (solid and hazardous) by50% from 1988 levels by the year 2000.With the encouragement of the CCME, which viewed hazardous waste as largely an industry problem, a committee, the “Industry Action Group”, representing eleven industry trade associations with a strong interest and involvement in hazardous waste was recruited.The Municipality of Markham, Ontario was also recruited (Appendix 1)."
