There is no universal standard for Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s). Every blasting operation has its own unique circumstances, its own methodologies and its own unique demands. It would be nearly impossible to create a one-size-fits-all document that would be totally appropriate for every blasting scenario. But there are universal objectives that should be adopted in any set of blasting SOP’s.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might perhaps, in many instances, cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this distinction in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Camp Brothers Company, Mogadore, Summit County, Ohio.

"Molybdenum is a very important rare mineral resources, which exists largely in oxidized ores and sulphide ores in nature. About 99% of metallic molybdenum comes from molybdenite. The talcose molybdenum resources are abundant but the resources utilization is low, because the talc is naturally hydrophobic and the floatability of talc is similar with molybdenite, which lead to difficult separation by flotation. Talc is easy entry into concentrate in flotation which can cause the content of MgO overhigh, therefore the molybdenum concentrate grade can not meet the industrial requirements. Thus the utilization level of talcose molybdenum resources has been restricted greatly.The adsorption of water on talc and molybdenite surfaces and natural floatability of minerals were studied by density functional theory method. The results showed that molybdenite and talc were layered minerals which exhibited similar surface wettability and H2O molecule prefers to stay with water rather than the minerals surfaces. N2 is adsorbed on talc and molybdenite surfaces more easily than H2O. The interaction and flotation behavior were studied by SEM and flotation experiments. The reason why talc interferes with the flotation molybdenite has been revealed. The agglomeration between molybenite and talc was caused easily in neutral or acidity solution, and it was dispersing between molybenite and talc particles in alkaline solution. The flotation results showed that good floatability of talc was the key factor causing a low grade of concentrate in alkaline solution. Thus, it is the key factor to enlarge floatability difference between molybdenite and talc.INTRODUCTIONMolybdenum is a kind of important rare metal and strategic reserve resources (Zhitao Y et al, 2016a). Due to excellent characteristic, such as high melting point, good thermal property and et al, it’s widely used in metallurgy, machinery, chemical, aerospace, and many other areas. It has become an indispensable metal in modern industry. Molybdenum generally exist in the form of molybdenite which is a kind of mineral with excellent natural floatability. Talc is a kind of typical hydrous and layered magnesium silicate minerals (Beattie D et al,2006a), which is one of the most common gangue mineral of the platinum group metal ores and metal sulfide ores (Tao L et al,2011). Due to its good native floatability, talc is easy entry into the concentrate product with foam in the process of sulfide ore flotation (Kelebek S and Smith S, 2006b), which resulted in decreasing concentrate indexes. Not on that, the high-content MgO of concentrate will also produce a series of adverse impact to the subsequent smelting (Lotter N O et al, 2008). Therefore, it is difficult to separate talc from sulfide ore concentrate effectively."

Dolomite is an essential raw material for the refractory industry, a flux in the iron and steel industry and also for the extraction of magnesium metal. Generally, particle size reduction, screening and classification are used for the preparation of the high-grade sized material for different applications, whereas low-grade fine fractions are not utilised. These fines or low-grade overburdens are dumped at the mine site for future utilisation, which creates environmental issues along with inadequate space management. In the present investigation, a detailed study was carried out to decrease the silica content of the low-grade dolomite fines from Gomardih , India, containing 28.6% CaO and 20.1% MgO along with 8.3% silica. Different process flow sheet options were evaluated with a combination of dry classifier, wet classifier, gravity concentrators as well as flotation. Different process variables were assessed along with mineralogical characterisation to optimise the process for efficient rejection of siliceous gangue minerals. Results indicated that dolomite, calcite and quartz are the major mineral phases present in the ore along with other minor minerals. It was concluded that two-stage flotation was an effective process for the reduction of silica up to below 1% after grinding to a particle size below 212 μm. A process flow sheet with a combination of gravitation air classifier and flotation can produce a concentrate with silica content below 4.5%. A rapid recovery/recycling process was introduced utilizing the surface-chemical properties of finely dispersed mercury and alumina (Al2O3) fibers in aqueous environment. The conventional method of amalgamation or .ball milling. involves the mixing of a substantial amount of mercury to collect free gold during the grinding stage. In effect, a portion of the mercury is transformed into minute droplets that readily float and disperse in the amalgamation effluent. The fine droplets of mercury in the dispersion readily attached onto the positively charged macroscopic alumina fibers (i.e. = pH 9.8) at conditions pH 3 to 10. When an effluent from settling procedure after an amalgamation-grinding stage is passed through a column-bed packed with alumina fibers, maximum collection of negatively charged finely dispersed mercury occurred at pH 3 to 6. The collection/attachment efficiency was 99.5%. The collected droplets of mercury, which are left in the column-bed of alumina fibers, were subsequently rinsed with alkaline solution at pH 10 to 11.5. At these conditions, both mercury and alumina fibers carry negative surface potentials and resulted in the partial detachment of mercury from the alumina fibers. The detachment efficiency was only 30-35%. The attachment/detachment mechanisms in this study were analyzed using the DLVO theory.

Por tal motivo, la mina Quiruvilca utilizó el método de explotación corte y relleno en la ejecución de sus vetas angostas. Sin embargo, la factibilidad del método tradicional señalado, no delimita el empleo de otros métodos de explotación, ni genera inversión alguna. En este sentido, el presente trabajo describe la aplicación del sistema numérico en la mina Quiruvilca a través de los métodos de explotación de tajeo con almacenamiento provisional y por subniveles en algunas vetas, con la finalidad de incrementar su productividad y tonelaje, así como eliminar el importe de su operación en los tajos correspondientes.

This summary of State laws on explosives was compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and, in general, how they have been treated. It does not include any legislation passed after 1942, or any proclamations, regulations, or administrative orders. It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative. If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful in determining whether relevant statutes exist, and in locating them quickly with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of these jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a similar subject. To make these comparisons easier, the statutory provisions for each State have been grouped under several major topics in outline form. Although this sometimes has resulted in disruption of the continuity of individual acts, the increased general clarity and availability of comparable sections have more than justified the procedure followed.

Different reefs being extracted from a mine will, in all likelihood, have significantly different semi-variogram models - and these will probably vary from geozone to geozone. As errors of estimation are dependent on the semi- variogram parameters, it follows, if a mine samples all reefs in all sections using the same sampling grid pattern, that estimation errors (or limits of confidence) will not be the same throughout the mine. This may be an undesirable situation! A geostatistical study of the relative merits of alternative sampling arrangements has been carried out by considering different reefs in different sections of a South African gold mine.

THE most concentrated industry of major character in the United States is that of the Ford Motor CO., which is to say Henry Ford. Its sole function is to supply the public with a cheap motor car which it does to the extent of two million or so per annum. In doing this, a relatively small profit per unit is multi- plied to an enormous aggregate per annum and has resulted in the creation of one of the greatest industrial fortunes of the world. The industrial and sociological consequences of .this are bound to be immense. On the physical side the production of two million automobiles means the consumption of two or three million tons of materials, chiefly metals, in the 'direct form of the finished product', and a huge additional tonnage of coal and other things that ,are consumed en route, and also the labor of many thousands of men. In the development of a business on this scale it was but natural that the Ford Motor ,Co. should seek to supply itself with the raw 'materials it needs, and they being so largely coal and metals the company is brought into close contact with the mining and metallurgical industries. It is a huge consumer of - steel. It is the fourth largest consumer of copper. It is a large consumer of lead, tin, aluminum and zinc. The mining and metallurgical industries have, therefore, good reason to learn to know Henry Ford, his personality, his thoughts and his policies.

This study provides an effective determination process of the interface microstructural parameters in the numerical modelling of the mechanical interaction between two different geomaterials involved with frictional-bonded interfaces, such as the interaction between backfill columns and the surrounding rocks, or the soil-structure interaction, by using the coupled finite-difference and discrete-element (FD-DE) method. Three-dimensional numerical direct shear tests were conducted on the coupled FD-DE model of the combined rock-cemented rockfill (R-CRF) specimens with the frictional-bonded interface. With the microstructural parameters determined, the macro-mechanical properties of the interface of the coupled model were calibrated to well fit with the theoretical values of the combined specimen under the direct shear condition assumed according to the Mohr–Coulomb strength criterion. Evident elastoplastic shear behaviour was observed on the interfaces, and excellent agreement was attained between the shapes of the theoretical and simulated shear stress-displacement curves of the coupled models at different servo-controlled normal stresses. Particulate-scale force chains inside the DE model of the CRF specimen were highly consistent with the force contour on the FD model of the rock specimen, demonstrating the shear stress evolution of the coupled model at different shear displacements. Parametric studies verified the effects of the deformation properties of the interface parallel bonds on the shape of shear stress-displacement curves of the coupled models. The test results validated the feasibility and rationality of the coupled FD-DE method for modelling the combined specimens with frictional-bonded interfaces or joints. Furthermore, this study provides valuable numerical modelling experience for investigating the shear behaviour at the interface between cemented backfill columns and surrounding walls by using the coupled FD-DE method.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring 1946 several high-grade limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Bureau of Mines. This report presents the data obtained from investigation of the Sauk Mountain deposits in east-central Skagit County, Washington.The investigation consisted of transit and topcgraphic surveys and sampling. The areas selected for sampling were first cleaned by blasting; channel samples up to 40 pounds were cut where practical. Chip samples averaging 30 pounds were taken where channel samples could not be cut. A total of 21 samples in the Sauk Mountain area were taken and. analysed. The locations of the samples are shown in figures 2 and 4, and the analyses are listed in tables 1 and 2. This investigation is a part of a long-range program of general investigation of mineral resources for future industrial development of the Pacific Northwest. The Sauk Mountain deposits were investigated for the purpose of disclosing now sources of high-purity limestone, which could be mined and shipped at low cost to Seattle and other industrial cities in the Pacific Northwest."

The Ban Houayxai mine (BHX) is a relatively low-grade, low-cost, open pit gold-silver deposit in Laos operated by Phu Bia Mining, a subsidiary of PanAust. The ore production rate at BHX is 4.5 Mt/a, with direct tipping to a semi-autogenous grinding/ball mill circuit with a carbon-in-leach process plant. Approximately 100 000 oz of gold is produced per annum.The operation is located in mountainous terrain with minimal run-of-mine stockpiling. This results in limited capacity for blending from stockpile, with the mill instead reliant upon direct feed ex-pit. Since commissioning in 2012, the plant has seen significant variation in milling rates due to variability in the feed properties of the oxide, transition and primary ores. As part of an ongoing continuous improvement program, an integrated approach was initiated, focusing on maintaining and enhancing production in the future as the proportion of harder primary ore increases. This will specifically focus on direct blending from the loading face using the ore properties and blast fragmentation to maintain mill throughput.This approach was based on the concept of physical assets management, commencing with improving information and knowledge of the condition of the orebody through modelling the characteristics, variability and performance of the feed for processes relevant to throughput. These models are used to support both mine and process plant production planning.The key ore feed characteristics and parameters modelled for the life-of-mine are blastability index, powder factor, crushability or impact resistance and grindability. These predictive spatial models were based on the data from diamond drill holes used in resource definition and geotechnical drilling programs by integrating geotechnical, geological, geochemical and metallurgical data.At the early stages of implementation, the models are being utilised for ore blending decisions to provide guidance and support for budgeting, long-term mine planning, blast design for mill feed and providing the mill with an expectation of performance.CITATION:Jackson, J, Gaunt, J and Astorga, M, 2014. Techniques were developed for preparing metallurgical-grade copper powder from industrially produced cement copper. Flotation was used for rejecting discrete gangue particles, acid leaching to remove residual iron and aluminum, hydrogen reduction to eliminate oxygen, sintering to consolidate the fine-sized copper, and grinding to obtain copper powder. Powders prepared from six different cement copper samples contained, in percent, 98.5 to 99.0 Cu, 0.10 to 0.05 Fe, 0.10 to 0.08 insoluble material and the remaining individual impurities less than 0.15 percent. The apparent density, flow characteristics, and other physical properties were suitable for powder metallurgy applications. An economic evaluation showed that this process was economically feasible. Processing costs appeared modest when considering that copper powder commands a price normally about 17.5 cents per pound over that of electrolytic copper.

Recent Federal coal-mine inspections have revealed some good and some definitely hazardous practices and systems for transporting; handling, and storing lubricants in and about coal mines. Improper storage or handling of. lubricants in coal mines has caused disastrous mine fires or, by supporting combustion, has made fires from other sources more difficult to fight. Careless handling of grease and oil around electrical equipment wastes much oil and permits entrance of grit and foreign substances into the working parts, which causes excessive wear and increases the possibility, of electrical ignition.

Improvements in construction equipment and techniques in recent years have made possible the use of drilled shaft foundations in diameters and lengths not previously considered practical or feasible. Many highway bridge and other structures are now routinely founded on drilled shafts which are 2.5 m to 3.0 m (8 to 12 feet) in diameter and extending over 60 m (200 feet) in depth below grade. There are unique challenges associated with constructing such large and deep cast-in-place foundations and engineers should be aware of the special needs associated with site investigation, construction specifications, material requirements, and quality assurance. This paper outlines a number of special considerations for these foundations, along with strategies that may be employed to improve the reliability and quality of large drilled shaft foundations.

Disseminated epithermal gold metallization occurs within a breccia unit interpreted to be a submarine debris flow. Cold is associated with oxidized pyrite, fluorite, and jasperoidal silica. A minimum of 9 million tons of open-pittable mining reserves will be cyanide heap leached as run-of-mine ore at a rate of 1.0 million tons per year. Careful evaluation of the combined results of successive sampling projects has established the pit plan, mineable reserves, and process metallurgy of the operation. The sampling procedure utilized for a given test depended upon geological interpretation as well as the procedures, successes, and failures of previous tests. This paper summarizes the sampling and testing procedures of the development effort in light of the project goals and attendant problems in achieving them.

"In order to study the support effect of concrete in the surrounding rock of a metal mine, the concrete and surrounding rock were comparatively studied. Firstly, the general situation of the ultra-kilometer deep shaft in Xincheng, surrounding rock and geological conditions are introduced. Secondly, the experimental scheme of material mechanical properties of surrounding rock and shaft lining concrete based on same standard dimension and shape are examined, and the mechanical tests of rock and concrete based on different shapes and sizes are carried out. The study shows that the compressive strength value and elastic modulus of the rock cube are 1.28 times and 1.78 times that of the cylinder, and the Poisson's ratio is 0.77 times. The dimensional effect law of the concrete cube and cylinder test data is consistent with the rock law. However, the test results of the concrete are less discrete than the rock; the test also shows that the strength and elastic modulus of the concrete lining of the main shaft of the Xincheng are much smaller than the surrounding rock that is also used as the concrete aggregate, which indicates that the support of concrete lining in the surrounding rock shaft behaved weakly. Based on the development of the modern NATM rock support theory, it is suggested that the mechanical test standard of artificial support materials should be unified into the mechanics test standard of natural rock, which will help to improve the accuracy and practicality of scientific calculation of geotechnical engineering.INTRODUCTIONConcrete and rock mass are usually attributed to a class of materials called frictional materials or geotechnical materials, of these two kinds of materials, the first is man-maded and the second is natural. The attentive scholar can find that there are many differences in the test criteria for the mechanical properties of the two kinds of materials among different industries or departments, reflecting the differences in their sources, tradition, and the application thoery of material strength among them.There is a situation wordwide, that there are many testing standards of the same material mechanical parameters such as elastic modulus, compressive strength, etc. The cube with a side length of 150 mm is adopted as a common sample in the architecture department in China, while a cylinder with a diameter of 50 mm and a height of 100 mm is as a standard specimen in geotechnical department.Knowing that mechanical parameter values are strongly affected by the the size, shape of specimen and loading rate etc, that is to say the mechanical parameter values of the same material are completely different when obtained from different test with different standards. However, such a problem has been long neglected in geotechnical engineering."

"Introduction.Southern Illinois and Kentucky are credited with approximately 90% of the fluorspar production of the United States. A small amount of high-grade acid, spar is obtained from the ore by band sorting; the greater part, however, is recovered by jigs and tables as gravel spar containing approximately 85% calcium fluoride. In the jigging and tabling operations, galena is recovered, and enough silica and calcite are removed to raise the calcium fluoride content of the gravel spar to 85%. However, the removal of silica and calcite results in a large loss of spar. With increasing depth in the mines, zinc sulphide, sphalerite, is encountered in increasing quantity and the removal of this has become a serious problem. While the sphalerite can be fairly well removed from the spar by present milling methods, a marketable zinc concentrate can not be made. The experiments described below were made on fluorspar ore from Southern Illinois, by the mining experiment station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, at Rolla, Mo., in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy.The ore tested contained. 7.3% lead, 27.9% zinc, 35.7% calcium fluoride, 9.5% silica and 4.7%. calcite.Tests and Results. In some preliminary tests it was noticed that a portion of the finely crushed ore adhered strongly to the sample pans, and upon investigation it was found that the adhering material was practically clean spar. By utilizing this property of adhesion 46.8% of the spar was recovered as a product containing 98.3% calcium fluoride. This suggested the possibility of using electrostatic separation."

"Calicut Bypass Phase-II project included construction of 7 m high embankment over soft compressible clays up to 18 m in thickness. Approx 1.5 km length of road out of a total 5 km length consisted of abandoned paddy fields which were low lying, waterlogged and marshy in nature. On the basis of excellent results achieved in earlier phases of the by-pass construction, ground improvement work by installing pre-fabricated vertical drains (PVD) was undertaken to stabilize the embankment foundation along the weak clay areas prior to road pavement construction to avoid large post construction settlement as well as to improve the lateral stability during and after embankment construction. This project perhaps stands out as one of the highway projects completed within a very short time period of total 18 months including four month long heavy monsoon period, when embankment construction was not possible and construction of two bridges across rivers. All activities including the ground improvement had to be programmed and completed within the shortest time period possible. The paper discusses details of the extensive ground improvement and soil instrumentation carried out for the project and will illustrate how careful planning and execution can reduce the period required for highway projects involving ground improvement.INTRODUCTIONPhase-II construction of Calicut by-pass was undertaken on a priority basis by the State of Kerala in 2014. The main contract was awarded to M/S ULCCS Ltd, Kozhikode, Kerala and the ground improvement work was awarded to M/S Geo-Enviro Engineers P Ltd, as specialist agency to design and execute the work.Soil investigation carried out confirmed thick soft clay deposits below GL in three areas along the road alignment totaling approx 1.5 km in length. These areas were low lying, waterlogged and marshy in nature. Highway embankment had to be constructed up to 7 m in height above existing GL to form the proposed road alignment along these areas. On the basis of excellent results achieved in earlier phases of the by-pass construction using pre-fabricated vertical drains or PVD (R. Radhakrishnan, 2006), ground improvement using PVD had been included in the contract to stabilize the embankment foundation along the weak clay areas prior to highway embankment construction to avoid large post construction settlement as well as to improve lateral stability during its construction."

Dimensional stone processing has become an important part of the world extractive industry, and today?s total stone block yearly production is estimated to be around 134.000.000 tons and is still growing by an average yearly rate of approximately 20%. In future, the same production will become an important part of the mining industry and presently, in some countries it represents even the main mining output. New environmental regulations, together with landscape and nature conservation requirements, create a number of difficulties in setting up new open pit dimensional stone quarries. As a result, many dimensional stone producers have recently started to apply underground techniques in order to produce the ornamental stone blocks intended for further processing. Underground production of stone blocks requires special mining methods and so far it has not been a cost-effective excavation method for all types of rocks. Presently, this type of stone excavation is generally applied in sedimentary and marble deposits because the rock has small to no mineral quartz content. When starting a new underground dimensional stone mine, it is necessary to analyse the impact of all primary factors which are crucial to set up a technically and cost effective advanced underground dimensional stone mine. The role of physical and mechanical properties of the rock, geological conditions, mineralogical composition, micro-tectonic state of the site, rock mechanic conditions on the site, durability and saw ability of the stone are decisive factors in foreseeing the future methods of extraction. The laboratory research work as well as the field work, is very important in decision-making aimed to choose the future excavation method. Also of equal importance is the serious market research, because it renders the indication of selling price potential. Having obtained the results from both types of research, mining engineers can design the mining methods which optimize financial return to the mine. The practice approved by 15 years of testing in the underground limestone quarry of Kanfanar gives future producers very useful advice and general data to facilitate the process of exploration intended to establish new similar underground quarries.
